was Rex Budd? FEATURE STORY

By Carl Portella

A

t their first meeting of the New Year on Wednesday January 21, the Mareeba Shire Council unanimously passed the naming of the Rex Budd Memorial Park located at the Mareeba Airport. Who was Rex Budd? Flight-Lieutenant Rex R Budd was a Vietnam veteran and war hero and was instrumental in pioneering the helicopter mustering industry in Queensland from his base at the Mareeba Airport. Rex Budd was born at the family farm at Murwillumbah, NSW, on the 5th of September 1935; one of five children born to Rex (Snr) and Alma Budd. He is survived by his brother Arthur, who still lives on the family farm and his sister Barbra, who lives close by; brothers Jim and John have since passed.

His brother Arthur fondly recalls: “We had model aeroplanes when we were kids and I suppose that’s where he got the lifelong ambition of flying. When he left TAS at the Armadale High School he was 17, he went jackarooing for a while, but shortly after he joined the National Training Corp in 1954 where he received a trophy for the best overall trainee of the Corps; and that’s where he learned how to fly fighter jets. “He left the Air Force after a few years, came back to the farm, but when the cattle recession of the 1960’s affected farmers, he returned to the Air Force; but they said he was too old to be a fighter pilot, so he turned to helicopters”. Rex had two tours of duty in Vietnam, with No 9 squadron stationed at Vung Tau, where he was the first RAAF helicopter pilot to log 1000 flying hours in the war zone.

Rex Budd was a distinguished war hero. Inset, Rex in his helicopter, where he pioneered cattle mustering.

Offering an alternative By Justin Fris

THE RATEP (Remote Area Teacher Program) is committed to supporting local indigenous students secure employment in education, by offering an alternative pathway. Celebrating its 25th year in 2015, the program has seen several members of Mareeba’s indigenous community enter full-time employment all across Queensland. Under the guidance of Trudy Schieb, all students are given unparalleled support, mentorship and access to a wealth of facilities (for example, computers, internet and printers), to aid their progression. “RATEP is very much a communitybased program,” she said. “The program offers an alternative to tertiary education; and allows for indigenous students to get jobs as either a teacher’s aid or as a teacher. “By not being forced to relocate for university, local students are able to remain close to family, which is often appealing to the students. “I’ve been networking with several job networks in both Atherton and Mareeba, in a bid to increase awareness of the program.” Students receive quality practical experience in the classroom, all while receiving

STUDENTS at St Stephen’s Catholic College attended their opening mass last Monday, officially welcoming their new school leaders for the first time. Conducted by Fr John Sullivan and Fr Robert Greenup, the St Stephen’s community officially acknowledged Joshua Priestly and Mellory Aitken as their new school captains. The pair went through a similar process to other schools; requiring to officially nominate and be interviewed by school staff. Both said the process was ‘nervy’, but they would be looking forward to spending time with their peers over the coming year. Joshua, a keen sportsman, is heavily involved in both swimming and surf lifesaving. He said it was a difficult balance

to fit in sporting commitments around school and work; but ultimately worthwhile. Mellory is dedicated toward horses and showjumping; and also has considerable talent in music, playing the piano. During the mass, several prayers and hymns were respectfully followed by all students, with many attending for the first time in their high school life. Pastoral leaders also received badges of recognition, which included: Jennifer Moss and Michael Curcio (Augustine), Jessyk Ernst and Tahlia Avolio (Deacon), Jack Kruss and Katherine Rossi (McAuley) along with Jake Pendlebury and Chelsie McHardie (Muluridji). Newly elected members of the Student Representative Council and Social Justice Committee were also presented to the audience.

The last known photo of Rex with Gerry Weedon shortly before being admitted to the Mareeba Hospital. From Page 1 He returned home in June 1970, having served 10 years in the RAAF; and being the recipient of one of the highest awards for serving his country - the “Distinguished Flying Cross”. The citation read: “In recognition of his superior leadership, courage and devotion to duty while serving with No 9 Squadron on an operational tour of duty in Vietnam.” The early seventies were trying times for Rex. Struggling to cope with the ravages of war; but he eventually found his feet and began operating a helicopter mustering service out of the Mareeba Airport. This proved to be a historical move, as he was the first helicopter mustering pilot in Queensland and credited as being a pioneer in the now flourishing industry. Rex did in a couple of days, what it would take stockmen weeks to complete. Rex identified good stockmen who showed interest in becoming pilots and with a sense of responsibility, paid for their training to become pilots. During his years as a helicopter pilot, Rex went on to teach others how to fly; and before long, he had his own pilots covering cattle stations on Cape York Peninsula and western Queensland. Opportunity of a lifetime for Atherton student

Grace Lawrence receives her scholarship certificate with Mr David Platz.

By Justin Fris

TALENTED Atherton student Grace Lawrence will embark on the opportunity of a lifetime, after being awarded a prestigious scholarship to Swinburne University in Melbourne. Ms Lawrence, a former school captain of Atherton State High School, received the news while on holiday with her older sister in Greece. “I was in Greece at the time when it was announced,” she said. “I got a Skype call from mum and dad, who passed on the good news. “I’ve only been to Melbourne once, but it is a city which I simply adore, as it has a very European feel.” The prestige of this scholarship should not be underestimated by anyone. The Vice Chancellor’s Excellence scholarship offered at Swinburne are rare; with only two students nationwide being awarded them each year. Ms Lawrence is going to study a Bachelor of Science (Physics) and hopes to specialise in either Quantum Physics or Astrophysics.

SPECIALISING IN: • Parcels • Pallets • White Goods • Furniture • Tail Gate Lifts

In order to qualify for the scholarship, Ms Lawrence needed to complete a detailed online application through VTAC (Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre), which included: personal statements, referees, references, and essay-style questionnaires. She expressed her sincere thanks to the teachers at Atherton High for their help in preparing her for university, along with their ongoing support. Along with this, Ms Lawrence makes special mention of David Platz, (her Astronomy and Astrophysics teacher) through grades 10 and 11. Mr Platz used his passion for the stars; and for his students to found and establish ‘The School of Astronomy and Astrophysics’. This initiative has become a worldwide virtual school committed to excellence in astronomy related subjects and aiming to create a sustainable nexus between student, teacher and professional academics. Grace concluded: “Mr Platz’s passion for Astrophysics was the reason that I initially became so excited about Physics.”

WITH one in every five regional Queensland homes now using a solar photovoltaic system in their homes, solar safety has never been more imperative. Ergon Energy Executive General Manager Customer Service Peter Billing said knowledge of keeping these systems safe is sometimes not widespread. “Solar PV systems are now commonplace on our customers’ homes, but knowledge of how to help keep these electrical systems safe is perhaps not so common,” he said. “The Electrical Safety Office has also highlighted instances where the wrong type of DC isolators have been installed in locations exposed to weather or water ingress, or installed using incorrect techniques. These incidents are a sobering reminder that solar PV, like many electrical appliances and installations, require maintenance and checks.” Mr Billing added that there were several tasks which

could ensure safety around your system, which include: • Checking your panels for discolouration, damages or discolouration. • Checking that support frames are securely fastened. • Visually looking over all fittings and cables, to both panels and inverter. • Double check the fault record history on the inverter. • Ensure clear access to all isolator switches. You should never attempt to do any electrical fittings yourself. Always leave it to a qualified professional. “Never attempt electrical repairs yourself,” Mr Billing warned, “Contact your electrician to repair any loose fittings, exposed cables or damage to the panels or wiring of any kind. “Many installers and other businesses now also offer maintenance, checking and cleaning services for solar PV installations so if you are not confident to do it yourself, pay someone who is.”

Building for the future on the Tablelands KEY local stakeholders have joined together in a bid to increase business investment on the Tablelands. The Tablelands Futures Corporation (TFC), in conjunction with both Mareeba Shire and Tablelands Regional Councils, have formed a collaborative alliance to maximise productivity. With a firm belief that economic growth is determined on regional investment, all stakeholders are excited about several opportunities that investment in the region can bring. TFC Chair Michael Lawrence said he was encouraged by current growth in the region, with all industries increasing innovative practices on the Tablelands. “The Tablelands is a very innovative region,” he said. “Even traditional industries in our region are building toward further innovation within their operations. “Innovation is definitely the way of the future; for both individuals as a business and the region as a whole.” The TFC has recently appointed Rob Macalister as its project officer, who will focus his energy at both strategic and ground level over the following 12 months. Mr Lawrence added that Mr Macalister would be a valued addition to the TFC organisation, who are committed to further excellence in 2015. “Rob will work on an agreed list of priority projects including development of investment ready projects, ongoing growth and focus on the burgeoning mountain biking industry, supporting small business andongoing transport issues,” he said. If you are a business owner looking to invest on the Tablelands, there are several upcoming opportunities to look forward to. Investors are encouraged to register for the ‘Investment Readiness and Capital Raising Workshop’, which will be held in both Atherton and Mareeba on March 30. The TFC is prepared to assist potential investors, by developing tailored investment profiles (TFC-based services are free of charge). From there, your profile can then be published into TFC publication, ‘Investment Opportunities in the Tablelands’, where your online presence can be enhanced significantly. Along with assistance with the TFC, your investment will also be promoted through a series of associated partners, which include: Advance Cairns, Trade and Investment Queensland and the Cairns Regional Investment Group.

Historical Igloo in need of help As you travel between Mareeba and Atherton on the Kennedy Highway, one gets a sense of the great natural diversity and beauty of the Atherton Tablelands region. As we know, the Tablelands is awash with cultural and social history; from both colonial and indigenous chapters. Although one particular story of Atherton’s role during WWII may not be so famous; which is where our story begins. Many sites still currently on the Tablelands have tell-tale signs of our distant past; with the Rocky Creek Igloo a prime example. Hidden in the dappled shade of the pioneer native gum trees is the only remaining building on the site of the Australian Army Hospital and Medical Base between 1942 and 1946. The Igloo marks what was once the site of both the 2/6 and 2/2 Australian General Hospitals. Combined there were originally over 120 permanent to semi-permanent buildings, and hundreds of tents. The hospital administered to more than 40,000 patients between 1942 and 1945. Soldiers sick and injured from the battlefields of New Guinea and the Pacific theatre; including the Kokoda campaign and the battles of the Huon Peninsula, were treated at this site. The Atherton Rotary Club has taken on this difficult and expensive project. The committed group (along with the support of individuals and local private businesses) have started to stage one in the restoration of the

It feels like Christmas again, as community groups receive generous donations Six community groups in Far North Queensland have received a $500 donation thanks to a special Bendigo Bank Christmas campaign. The campaign rewarded six lucky shoppers who each received a $500 bank account as well as being able to make a $500 donation to a community group of their choice. Bendigo Bank Regional Manager Tony Jensen said the aim of the competition was to show the connection between buying local and supporting the local community. “We wanted to encourage shoppers across six different communities – Ravenshoe, Malanda, Mareeba, Dimbulah, Kuranda and Atherton – to buy local this Christmas and watch how their community benefits,” Mr Jensen said. “Not only does buying local have an enormous economic flow on effect in their town, but by filling in a simple form while they shopped, shoppers were also eligible to go into the $500 prize draw.” More than 67 local businesses took part in the campaign and over 2500 entries were submitted over the four weeks of the campaign.

Winners from each district included... Atherton: Pamela Roulston nominated the Carinya Home for the Aged as her community organisation to receive a share of the money. Director of Nursing Kelly Smith said, “This unexpected donation means we can purchase specially designed pressure relieving mattresses sooner than anticipated, and the equipment will assist our nursing staff to provide a higher level of care to our most frail residents”. Kuranda: Local Lorraine Coleman enter the competition after shopping at Kuranda Discount Drug Store. Lorraine then asked for the $500 to be donated to the Kuranda Junior Community Athletics for the purchase of high jump equipment. Ravenshoe: Lucky winner Tonia Lucarelli chose Meals on Wheels to receive $500. Tonia said she has seen the good work Meals on Wheels does and this is why she chose to donate the charity portion of her prize to them. Meals on Wheels’ Alex Lucarelli said, “The funds will be very useful and go towards putting in a cold room in the kitchen.” Dimbulah & Mareeba: Gale Collins lucky ticket came after a purchase from the Funky Mango Cafe in Dimbulah. Gale nominated Dimbulah State Primary School’s P&C Association to receive $500 after her win. In Mareeba the competition’s youngest winner was Yasmin Dennis who nominated the Mareeba State School’s P&C to receive $500. Malanda: Heather Mathews was the lucky Malanda winner and chose the Malanda Scouts to receive $500 and they have plans to put the funds to good use. Heather plans to use her portion of the prize towards a holiday for her family. Mr Jensen said buying local was something Bendigo Bank supported year round. “Shopping for goods and services locally helps keep money in your community and benefits the local region.”

Survelliance of your cattle during the wet season is a must.

Keep an eye on your cattle GRAZIERS and pastoralists are being told to remain vigilant, as Bovine Ephemeral Fever (BEF) has the potential to strike during the wet season. Despite healthy rainfall across much of regional NSW and Qld, BEF has the potential to leave economic havoc in its wake. Also as ‘three-day sickness’, BEF can cause cattle to lose weight, die or even reduce fertility in bulls, none of which are ideal. Cattle impacted by BEF are often likely to lose their appetite and lie down for substantial periods of time. Some other symptoms can include fever, muscle stiffness, along with excessive nasal and saliva discharge. Livestock Biosecurity Network (LBN) Northern Australia Regional Officer Dr Sarah-Jane Wilson said some farmers had been caught out by the rain, along with recent shortage of the treatment vaccine. “The virus that causes BEF is thought to be transmitted between cattle by flying insects such as mosquitoes and biting midges, and these insects become more prevalent after significant rain. “The disease can affect cattle of all ages and is often seen after a prolonged drought period because the lack

Lactating cows and bulls should be treated promptly if you suspect BEF.” In addition, a blood test can identify if your cattle have picked up the virus; a process which can be done at your local vet. After the shortage of the vaccine had been detected, supplies have been hastily delivered to affected areas. “For cattle older than six months of age, vaccination for BEF is best practice and is required as soon as possible to avoid high-risk and high-value livestock being affected and causing economic losses for producers,” Dr Wilson said. Livestock producers are encouraged to contact their vet to see when supplies of the vaccination in their area will be available.”

The start this year has been historic with our first cohort of year 7 students joining high school along with Year 8s. Year 7 classes have been structured to have a core teacher similar to a primary school model with the added advantage of access to specialist teachers across the curriculum. At Mareeba State High School we love to keep the community informed of all the exciting things that are happening throughout the year. J S , SS Pn p

The year 7’s of 2015 have really been active in taking advantage of their new school. Students have been involved in a variety of different learning experiences, including science experiments, drama performances and learning new skills with computer software. Students have also been able to have the opportunities at lunch times to play sport in the hall, participate in photography challenges and meet new friends. The year 7 camp is coming up in a few weeks where students will be able to learn more about their class mates, while having fun in a safe, adventurous environment. Leigh Gargan – Teacher and Year 7 Co-ordinator The Year 8’s have settled in well with their new teachers, subjects and surroundings at Mareeba State High School. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

LNP frightening under Newman In his letter to The Express, 11 February, David Kempton said a big factor in his defeat was the lies told by his opponents. Lies are told in all elections, but they weren’t confined to any one party. At the Kuranda polling booth a large sign by the LNP claimed that a Labor government would introduce fluoride into the town drinking water; a direct lie. The decimation of the LNP vote was largely a reaction to the threatened sale (leasing) of state assets. This was also a significant factor in the defeat of the previous Labor government, so there should have been no surprise in the reaction to Campbell Newman’s threat to sell our assets. David Kempton obviously thinks that union members should not be allowed to support their preferred candidate, but there was

no such complaint when the same unions opposed the Bligh Government’s assets sales at the last election. This election was also a rejection of the public service cuts and the attack on doctors. However, the most frightening aspect of the Newman Government was his attack on the independence of the judiciary by appointing his own Chief Magistrate, and the changes to the CMC. This was an attempt to return to the excesses of the Bjelke-Petersen government. In an interview on the ABC, Tony Fitzgerald described the Newman Government as the lowest point in good government in Queensland since the Fitzgerald Commission. The LNP has never had much respect for the concept of the separation of powers, but as a solicitor, one would have expected David Kempton to be vocal in his opposition to this attack on the basic tenet of a liberal democracy. Peter Ryle, Kuranda

Climate change is real issue With climate change steadily increasing the heat on us all, very few voters remain to be convinced about the damage pollution is doing to our planet. At a time when there has never been a greater need for a planet-defending political party, it is remarkable that the Greens effectively put loony-left social platforms above environmental issues. The Queensland population includes

about half a million centrist voters (the term “swinging voter” now being politically incorrect). Centrist voters change their vote election by election; and those votes change Governments. Centrist voters, even with their climate savvy, tend not to vote for the Greens specifically because of their leftist ideology. If the Greens want seats so they can influence policy to benefit the planet then they need to attract centrist voters and they won’t do that until they dump the leftist philosophies that cripple their credibility at the ballot box. Peter Campion, Tolga

Decentralised electric power The decentralisation of Electric Power Generation and the adoption of electric vehicles will prevent an energy and transport calamity in the event of a climatic disruption; to centralised electric power generation and fossil fuel deliveries or shortages. The USA has already seen the merit in setting up its locally based defense establishments with alternate electric power supplies (solar) and the US Navy is moving ahead with nuclear and Bio-Fuel Development (Bio-Diesel and Ethanol) to avoid being held hostage to Middle East oil or sabotage. Aircraft (both jet and piston engine) are flying on bio-fuel). The development of electric powered aircraft although in its infancy is progressing. We in Australia, unfortunately have not seen this as a strategic issue even though

most of our fuel (so imperative to our economy and defence) is imported and our electricity travels hundreds of kilometers to its customers with its inherent voltage drop and other related problems of long transmission lines vulnerable to Bushfires and Cyclones. I believe every locality, township or shire should have its own electric power generating capacity and the ability to produce its own fuel supplies. While some may think this is pie in the sky thinking, I hope that the Australian public will adopt an open mind to issues that the USA, Europe and China are currently moving forward with. Having had the pleasure of a test drive of the TESLA luxury car in Sydney, there is no doubt it is the way of the future. We can embrace these issues and help them come to fruition or wait years and let the world pas us by while suffering the prob-

lems of centralized electric power and the uncertainty of imported fuel for perhaps another one or two generations. One thing for certain change is coming and we can be part of the change and its opportunities or continue the status quo mentality to our detriment. George Adil, Mareeba

Dimbulah’s new leaders

(L-R) Toby Brown (Sport), Julius Srhoj (Sport), Lauren Schincarol (School Captain), Cody Harrigan (School Captain), Danae Tosani and Kaitlyn Scapin (Sport). By Justin Fris

ST Anthony’s Parish School recently announced their school leadership positions for 2015, amid great enthusiasm within the town. Cody Harrigan and Lauren Schincarol will be the school’s captains; and both are eager to represent St Anthony’s in the community. In his spare time, Cody likes to spend time at home on his family’s farm. With a broad smile on his face, he said he will be keen to involve his peers in as many events as possible. Lauren is a keen soccer player and has become a utility player across the pitch. “I like to score goals, but I don’t mind stopping them either,” she said. Cody and Lauren were joined either side by St Anthony’s sports captains for the year: Toby

Brown, Kaitlyn Scapin, Julius Srhoj and Danae Tosoni. A sportsman whose talent appears limitless, Toby is gearing up for potentially two separate trips to Brisbane in a month; attending state championships for both athletics and swimming. Danae, Julius and Kaitlyn spoke about how they were looking forward to sports today and increasing an inclusive ‘sport for all’ message across the school. “We really hope to encourage more students to participate on sports day and have fun; as it isn’t all about winning ribbons,” Julius said. Another new addition to both the Dimbulah and St Anthony’s community, is the arrival of Mr Brad Williams as Principal. Originally from South Australia and having spent time teaching in the Tiwi Islands (off the

50 Shades of Grey premiere Rising Sun Cinema at Mareeba RSL on Thursday, February 12, 2015

ONE of the most talked about movies of recent times ‘50 Shades of Grey’ premiered at the Rising Sun Cinema in Mareeba, on Thursday, February 12, raising $3,000 for charity. More than 200 ladies and a few gents, turned out for the premiere which was put on as a fundraiser by the Mareeba Rotary Club. The night featured exclusive pre-event entertainment by the Mareeba Theatre Group, which proved to be a hit and was followed by the movie premiere. All in the name of a good cause, there was laughs from start to finish and the night raised an amazing $3,000 for Breast and Prostate Cancer research. Ladies also donated old bras to charity via Intimo with Raylene Srhoj and purchased ‘Red Socks’ an initiative of the Townsville Sunrise Rotary Club that aims to save lives through the early detection of Prostate Cancer.

The Pirate Prince in Dimbulah Mareeba Theatre Group took the ‘The Pirate Prince’ on the road on Saturday, February 7, for a one night performance in Dimbulah. The event raised funds for the newly formed Dimbulah Rotary Club and Dimbulah Lions.

RISING SUN MOVIE NEWS

envelope-pushing film offers hip, lip and zip. The plot flies wildly at times but there's plenty to entertain with gee-whizz gadgetry, a streetwise youngster groomed for spy-dom and a sterling cast including the scene-stealing Samuel L. Jackson as a lisping, philanthropist billionaire with misguided notions about climate change. Based on a comic book by Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons, the Kickass screen writing team Vaughn and Jane Goldman have concocted a heady martini that is definitely shaken not stirred and whose ingredients are colourful and often mind-blowing. After two brief establishment prologues set in the Middle East and the snowy heights of Argentina that leave us reeling with unanswered questions, we are introduced to Taron Egerton's Eggsy, whose Pygmalion transformation during the course of the film takes him from South London punk who mixes with the wrong crowd, to bespoke tailored spy. And as Colin Firth's smooth operative Harry Hart (code name Galahad) tells him, 'a bespoke suit always fits' as well as 'manners maketh the man'. (Kingsman HQ is accessed through an elite tailor shop in Savile Row.) Harry has plenty of opportunities to show the wide-eyed youngster how things work in the Kingsman Secret Service, including the attributes of the bullet-proof brolly that doubles as a stun gun among other things. Eggsy's initiation into the exclusive club (together with other Kingsman hopefuls) goes a long way into endearing us to him, as he shows his strength, courage and clear thinking when put through heavy-duty survival tests. (Sophie Cookson is appealing as Roxy.) The sky diving scene in which they are told that one participant may not have a parachute is terrific. The other contenders are hoity toity types who look down at the lower-class Eggsy. Firth is suitably understated as the spy intent on repaying an outstanding debt - to the point of being a delightful immaculately groomed caricature, while Egerton is perfect as the new recruit, eager to make his mark. Michael Caine

New on the Rising Sun Screen this week is the excellent James Bond Spoof, KINGSMAN - THE SECRET SERVICE, with an all star cast that includes Colin Firth, Samuel L Jackson, Mark Hamill and Michael Caine. We can really recommend this action comedy thriller, with its excellent credentials and good reviews – it is cinema entertainment at its best . Also continuing for a second great week is the most talked about film of the year – FIFTY SHADES OF GREY. Based on the book that sold 100 million copies. It 's the same movie that had one of the biggest opening box office weekends in recent Aussie cinema history - and the biggest ever at The Rising Sun.

FIFTY SHADES OF GREY

FIFTY SHADES OF GREY is a story of control and success. When Anastasia Steele, a literature student, goes to interview the wealthy Christian Grey, as a favour to her room-mate Kate Kavanagh, she encounters a beautiful, brilliant and intimidating man. The innocent and naive Ana starts to realise she wants him, despite his enigmatic reserve and advice - she finds herself desperate to get close to him. Not able to resist Ana's beauty and independent spirit, Christian Grey admits he wants her too, but in his own terms. Ana hesitates as she discovers the singular tastes of Christian Grey - despite the embellishments of success, his multinational businesses, his vast wealth, his loving family - Grey is consumed by the need to control everything.

KINGSMAN: THE SECRET SERVICE

Britain's super-secret spy organisation recruits an unrefined but promising street kid into the agency's ultra-competitive training program just as a global threat emerges from a twisted tech genius. Review by Louise Keller: A beguiling mash-up of the spy movie genre with a seamless blend of action, satire and spoof, Matthew Vaughn's

and Mark Strong are also part of the team. But it is Jackson whose flamboyant, villainous Richmond Valentine claims the film's key moments. 'No-one can hack into pen and paper,' he declares in one scene, the irony being that he is a technology guru. It helps that his side-kick Gazelle (Algerian dancer Sofia Boutella, amazing) is a svelte killing machine with razor-sharp bionic legs that slice and splice on call. There are plenty of wonderful touches - like the kidnapped Swedish Crown Princess, Mark Hamill's kidnapped scientist, the discourse between Firth and Jackson about spy movies and watch for the elite dinner scene that is MacDonalds with silver service. Many will be at a loss at the controversial scene in Kentucky at the Glade Mission Church when all hell breaks loose. This is the film's most risky sequence and one that will have many scratching their heads and potentially feeling discomfort in the wake of current world affairs and related violence. Sparking with energy and an abundance of ideas, this is a wild joy ride of a spy movie in which laughs, tension, surprises and action jostle for attention.

Chance meeting with Bishop ON a recent trip to Townsville to see Kenny Rogers live in concert, three Mareeba ladies casually ran into Julie Bishop MP, who happened to be staying at the same hotel as the trio. Connie Mete, Maria Di Pasquale and Denise Srhoj were politician struck when they

saw Julie Bishop MP, the Minister for Foreign Affairs and the Deputy Leader of the Liberal Party, who was in Townsville with the Prime Minister making announcements. The ladies didn’t let her slip away and stopped her for a chat on local issues and a photo, before heading back to Mareeba.

Swim for a cause

Douglas United in happier times. The club will not play in the Premier League this season, due to a lack of senior numbers.

Dr Matt Jacob is getting ready for the Swimarathon at the Mareeba Pool this Sunday.

Douglas on the rocks for Premier League By Justin Fris

DOUGLAS United will not compete in the 2015 FNQ Premier League, which will reduce the competition to seven teams. DUFC officials advised FNQ football stakeholders at a meeting last Monday night that they were lacking enough senior squad players to field a competitive topflight team each week. Due to the nature of the region, the club has typically relied on foreign players and tourists to fill their squad each season. FNQ Football GM Duncan Sims said the league fully understood DUFC’s plight; and the league would be working closely with the club to ensure they can swiftly return to the Premier League. “Naturally we are disappointed that Douglas (United) is unable to play in the Premier League this season,” he said. “We understand the unfortunate position they are in and understand the tough decision that club officials had to make. “We commend Douglas United for understanding the

integrity of the Premier League and we will put strategies in place to help increase senior numbers.” DUFC’s omission from the 2015 season will mean the introduction of a weekly bye, which will give players an opportunity to stay fresh for the finals. Mareeba United FC Premier Men’s Coach Alex Srhoj said the weekly bye would be welcomed by the club, as fixture congestion can at times take its toll on the playing group. “It’s a bit of a blessing in disguise,” he said. “With so many different competitions on during the year, it really does test overall depth of your squad. “Given the weather conditions as well, I think we have the right number of games.” MUFC has nominated for the lucrative FFA Cup (Australia’s version of the FA Cup) with regional qualifying ties set to be announced within the next month. Should MUFC win through the various qualifying stages of the tournament throughout the year, they could potentially face an A-League opponent in the round of 32. The FFA Cup is set to again be televised on FOX Sports, which will inject much needed funds into grassroot clubs across Australia.

Bulls bank on balance

organisers of an annual charity swimming event are putting the call out for participants to be a part of the world’s largest one hour swim. The Rotary Swimarathon will be held at Mareeba Swimming Pool, this Sunday, February 22, and aims to raise funds for the eradication of polio across the world. Dr Matt Jacob, event organiser, is encouraging individuals or teams of six to come along and sign up at the pool at 8am on Sunday. All ages are welcomes and participants will swim for one hour, with a relay race to be held after the main swim. “It’s going to be a fun and fitness event for the whole family, that is also going to raise money for what is a very important goal,” Dr Jacob said.

“The event has a long history and I think the more people we get turning out on the day, the better it’s going to be.” The 2014 Mareeba Swimarathon had more than 60 people swim and raised over $2,000 for polio. Swimmers can sign on from 8am, with the main swim to commence at 9am. Cost is $5 per participant and refreshments will be available. The worldwide event has raised more than $1 million since its inception and teams or individuals can also raise money prior to Sunday by collecting sponsorship from the community, family and friends. For more information phone 0400 380 852, or visit the ‘Friends of Mareeba Rotary’ Facebook page.

Dimbulah FC Sign-On Day

MUFC have made a solid start to training under Alex Srhoj.

By Justin Fris

Mareeba United Football Club is hopeful that a delicate blend of old and new will hold them in good stead for the 2015 season. Across all three grades, club officials are confident all three senior squads have the potential to mount another premiership push. Mareeba locals are needed no reminder of the Bulls’ exploits last season, although several key players will be notable omissions when the season kicks off. Elliot Gardiner (2014 Golden Boot winner) has left the club due to travel and work commitments, while Kane Alderton and Victor Madrid will also be unavailable. Premier Mens Coach Alex Srhoj said he believed the club was in a good position and that a solid blend of youth and experience would

ensure good times remain at Borzi Park. “You cannot replace players like Victor, Kane or Elliot; but we do our best to try and full void, and evolve,” he said. “The way I see it, it’s just another opportunity for someone else to shine.” Srhoj was also quick to highlight the importance of livewire David Ruiz, who will be returning to the club in 2015, along with former Brisbane Strikers and Perth Glory veteran, Wayne Srhoj. “He (Ruiz) still has the touch; he is a classy player, and one that knows how to get the job done,” he said. “We just have to make sure we manage his body and get him ready for the season opener.” “The first couple of sessions have been great; the boys are in better shape than I thought.”

Gladiators prepare for battle

Shana Aue hits the tackle bag with extreme force. By Justin Fris

THE waft of deep heat cream is beginning to resurface at Davies Park, as the Mareeba Gladiators complete the tail end of their pre-season training. Wet weather has been no barrier for David Grainer’s men, who have been training in earnest since mid-November. Coach Grainer said his charges would face their first pre-season trial on February 28, which will be an away trip to Mossman. With solid numbers on the training track, the group has now been split into three separate sec-

tions of the field, depending on grade level. All grades are learning the same team structure and plays, regardless of age or team grade. The Gladiators are known as a club who give youth a chance. It always is a treat to visit Davies Park and get a true insight into how our local sides are progressing as a unit. After an initial warm-up of match simulation (both sides completing sets of six, but no tackling), Coach Grainer addressed his expectations for the session. He spoke about the importance of line speed

and maintaining it throughout the match; along with not bunching up around the play-the ball. Upcoming sessions would also focus on ball handling and ensuring the players hold onto the ball during critical situations. One thing that did stand out throughout the session was the presence of Shana Aue in training drills. His level of encouragement and support to all teammates is first class; and will be a real asset to the team. The team began the session with a passing drill; with the importance of quality ball and talk

amongst all players paramount. In this situation, coaches look for short, sharp bursts from their players. They look to see who can handle the pressure of a congested corridor of players, but still produce quality skill. The tackling bags were also brought out, with the emphasis on completing repeat effective tackles with minimal rest. The season is only weeks away and locals are optimistic about a positive season, with plenty of victories to celebrate.
