Tablelands Regional Council celebrated Seniors’ Week by officially opening the age-friendly exercise park on Wednesday, August 22.

The park, at the Priors Creek end of Vernon Street in Atherton, was opened by Deputy Mayor Katrina Mellick with the help Councillors Kate Eden and Anthony Ball.

“Nearly 24 per cent of our community is aged 65 or older, much higher than the regional Queensland average of 17 per cent,” said Mayor Joe Paronella.

“We need to look after the seniors in our community and meet the increasing needs of our ageing population.

“Thankfully we were successful in obtaining a $100,000 grant from the Advancing Queensland Age-friendly Community Grants Program.”

cik said the exercise park was developed with input from seniors and local groups representing seniors.

“The equipment focuses on strength, flexibility, balance and mobilisation,” she said.

“It’s a welcoming space for all the community to connect and exercise, and to keep healthy and well.

“We will have professional trainers from FNQ Health and Fitness to guide you through the equipment 9– 11am Wednesday 29 August and Saturday 1 September.”

The trainers have developed workout plans for the park equipment that can be downloaded from trc.qld.gov.au.

“We’ll also be giving away exercise resistance bands at these free community sessions, so come along and learn how to use the park,” said Cr Mellick.

Road closures for car race Roads across the Tablelands will be closed this weekend as exotic supercars and historic sportscars take part in the Targa race. More than 200 competitors will take part in the 18 stage race that travels across 900 kilometres of roads from August 31 to September 2.

Broadcast internationally, the race will travel through Malanda, Ravenshoe, Atherton and Kuranda.

The town visits are Atherton Friday August 31 9.20am-12pm, Malanda Saturday September 19.20am-12.30pm, and Ravenshoe Sunday September 2 10.45am-1.30pm and Kuranda Rainforestation Sunday, September 2 from 6.46am and 11.16am.

Event Director Mark Perry said it would be a great opportunity to see a cavalcade of motoring history with everything from Porsches and Ferraris to Dodge Vipers, Mustangs and classic

Toranas.

“The town visits will be a lunch stop so locals can see the cars and talk to the drivers,” he said. “Local charities will collect donations from the drivers and the competitors and crew will enjoy a fully catered lunch from local suppliers.”

Road closures include: Day 1, Friday August 31, will comprise three targa sections at Green Hill, the Gillies Range Road and Little Mulgrave, and Copperlode Dam/Lake Morris Road. Day 2, Saturday September 1, will comprise four targa sections at Upper Barron, Lake Eacham and Yungaburra, Glen Allyn & North Johnstone, and Copperlode Dam/Lake Morris Road. Day 3, Sunday September 2, will comprise the final four targa sections, being the Kuranda Range Road, Malanda, Moregatta and Theresa Creek, and Millaa Millaa and Palmerston.

Putting emergency services to the test Local firies, police, ambos and the SES took part in a training exercise last Thursday at Mareeba Aerodrome.

Around 50 emergency services personnel took part in a live exercise at Mareeba Aerodrome last week that simulated a crash between two planes and six casualties.

The annual operation was co-ordinated by Mareeba Shire Council for training purposes to help prepare first responders in the event of a real scenario.

“It’s very important that we undertake this exercise so that

we can remain compliant with our CASA obligations under the Civil Aviation Safety Regulations and secondly ensure that we’re best equipped to respond to an emergency should one occur out here at the Aerodrome,” said Glenda Kirk, Director Infrastructure Services at Mareeba Shire Council.

“Today our simulated exercise involved a crash between two small aircraft on the ground, one containing four casualties and one containing two casualties and the aircraft involved

were both undertaking pilot training activities.

“We selected that as we have a large number of pilot training activities occurring here at Mareeba Aerodrome.”

Every other year the exercise is a live scenario, alternating from desk training, but this year’s exercise was the biggest set up so far.

“It’s essential that we test this sort of response to ensure that the inner agency operations run smoothly,” said Derek Garner, Senior Sergeant in Charge at Ma-

reeba Police Station.

“It’s a good way to test our current plans and see how they can be modified in the future and that’s the main purpose of it, to look at improvements.”

Crews from the police, fire service, State Emergency Services and the ambulance service travelled from Mareeba and Atherton to take part in the exercise.

The organisations will get together this week to evaluate how the exercise went to look for areas of improvement.

Cops charge nine with drug offenses Detectives recently executed search warrants on five residences, targeting illicit drugs around the Tablelands, resulting in nine people, three women and six men all aged between 21 and 60, were charged with a total of 42 charges.

Charges included trafficking, produce dangerous drug schedule 2 quantity, produce dangerous drugs, possession of dangerous drugs, possession of dangerous drugs schedule 1 quantity, possession of property suspected of being from proceeds of crime, permit use of place, possession of instructions for producing dangerous drugs, possession of drug utensils, no authority to possess explosives, unlawful possession of weapons and fraud.

Police will allege a quantity

of drugs were seized during the raids and included crystal methylamphetamine (ICE), cannabis, oxycodone, ecstasy and steroids.

Officer in Charge of Far Northern Drug Squad Detective Senior Sergeant Kevin Goan said the Queensland Police Service continues to encourage members of the public to contact Crime Stoppers if they notice suspicious behaviour in and around their neighbourhoods.

“ICE is far reaching and are seeing it in Cairns as well as the Tablelands, Cassowary Coast and remote areas,” Detective Senior Sergeant Goan said.

“We’d love to hear more from those areas if people have any information in relation to ICE use or supply.

“Tell us what you know, not who you are.”

“They’re amazing,” said Nicki Wright whose son Dylan, 26, has been using the organisation for eight years.

“They keep him very busy.

They have group activities that they include them all in, they go bowling, they take them to the movies. They have their new kitchen so one of his carers does cooking with him.”

Dylan attends FlexiChoice every morning and for Nicki it was a big step finding somewhere that she felt comfortable with.

Now FlexiChoice falls under the new NDIS scheme meaning they can offer more services to those in the community that really need it.

FlexiChoice has grown from a small community organisation to a leading service provider with 45 clients from across the Tablelands and beyond.

Now with 32 staff, the team provides a multi-skilled approach to the care of their clients seven days a week.

CEO Virginia Carr has been with the organisation since 2005 and has seen the business evolve.

“Our team of staff enjoy their job and believe so much in what they are about and they give so much,” she said.

Herberton War Memorial restoration project begins Work on the project to restore Herberton’s War Memorial trophy gun has already begun in earnest.

“Thanks to a grant from Queensland Anzac Centenary Lasting Legacies, we have $22,000 to complete this important work,” said Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) Mayor Joe Paronella. “The gun, a German 76mm light mortar, was common on the Western Front during World War I.” The allied forces captured the mortar near the end of the

war and it was repatriated to Australia. In 1921 it was allocated to Herberton as part of the formal trophy allocation process and has formed part of the cenotaph in Grace Street ever since. The tyranny of time and exposure to the elements have caused the mortar to corrode and become damaged, so on 9 August it was removed from its footings for repair.

“Hans Pehl will restore the mortar to as close to its original condition as possible before it is repainted and returned hopeful-

ly in time for the Remembrance Day ceremony,” said Division 1 Councillor Kate Eden.

“The work will be overseen by heritage archaeologist Gordon Grimwade.”

The Herberton Lions Club are in the process of replacing the statue at the memorial and the restoration of the mortar will complete the refurbishment of the cenotaph. It will be great to have the cenotaph fully restored and hopefully secure for another 100 years,” said Councillor Eden.

Roads of NOMINATIONS remembrance NOW OPEN!

Tablelands Regional Council has been successful in obtaining a Commonwealth Government Armistice Centenary Grant.

“The grant will fully fund our exciting Roads of Remembrance Project,” said Mayor Joe Paronella.

“We’ll use the $20,364 to research and identify roads in our region that are named after people, places or events associated with World War I. “This is a giant body of work and we are keen to get the community’s assistance to help us identify the roads that fit the criteria.

Games challenge high school students On Monday July 31, 16 students and five teachers from Mareeba State School travelled to Townsville for the 2018 Challenge Games.

The Challenge Games attracts over 1000 students and provides two days of fun, friendship and participation in a range of sports and fun activities for school students with a disability.

Students have the opportunity to participate in as many events as they wish, according to their own level of interest and ability.

This was also an opportunity for students to participate in social activities and learn from each other.

While in Townsville the students visited the Billabong Sanctuary, Ten Pin Bowling, went to a disco and enjoyed a night out for dinner at the Cowboys Leagues Club.

This experience could not have been possible without the generous support from various businesses and community groups. Council worker scores trip on the Young Endeavour Cook Shire Council Workshop and Fleet Manager Scott Johnson scored a trip aboard the tall ship Young Endeavour, after being nominated for an Australian Defence Force recognition program.

Mr Johnson, who manages staff who are also in the Army Reserves, spent half a day aboard the Young Endeavour last weekend in recognition of his support for the Army Reserves program.

“Having a Reservist in the team brings a different perspective and different skills to the workplace,” Mr Johnson said. The trip was an initiative of the Defence Reserve Support Council, which promotes the benefits of Reserve service to employers and the

community and creates an effective link between the community, employers, Reservists, the Australian Defence Force and all levels of government. T he Young Endeavour is manned by Royal Australian Navy permanent and reserve personnel and youth as part of the Young Endeavour Youth Development Program, which highlights another avenue in which Defence reservists are employed.

Birdlife variety night at Malanda BirdLife Australia Northern Queensland Branch is conducting a night of presentations from several members, in Malanda on Thursday August 30.

Brief presentations include one from well-known Mt Molloy birder and birding guide Del Richards who will be talking about the development of his “Bird Island”. Graziers often come across drowned birds in their livestock watering troughs and this can lead to unpalatable water as well as the loss of birds.

Del came up with the idea of a floating bird island that would mean a bird that fell in the water could clamber aboard, dry off and take flight. According to BirdLife Northern Queensland Convener Peter Valentine, there is great interest in this excellent solution from across Australia

and overseas and they are now manufactured in Australia.

Another presentation will be from Renee Cassels from James Cook University who recently completed a study of Pale Yellow Robins, that friendly feathered delight seen throughout the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area (but nowhere else). Renee studied the birds across the Tablelands at different sites and will provide insights into the habitat and home-range requirements of the species. It is usually a well-known bird to visitors as they are commonly encounters at the Curtain Fig and at Mt Hypipamee.

Love and growth of the game Where does the time go the 2018 Eacham Junior rugby league is drawing to a close once again with the Grand Final in Herberton. This year will see all five Junior clubs represented on grand final day a first for a number of years and a reflection of the love and growth of the game of rugby league on the Tablelands.

On the representative scene the Eacham Panthers once again brought home the green shield against Innisfail making it three years in a row that the shield has made its way up the Palmerston.

Mason doing a fantastic job.

Dennis Hamilton in his role as referees coordinator has done a quality job mentoring the next generation of up and coming referees. This is a role that we are short on and going forward we would love to see more parents or players out there hand up in season 2019.

Five local clubs go head to head at Wondecla Oval Herberton’s Wondecla Sports Oval will host the 2018 Grand Finals of the Eacham Junior Rugby League competition this Saturday, September 1.

All five club’s will take part in grades from under seven through to the under 16 decider. Presently the Eacham JRL consists of five clubs – Malanda Eels, Herberton Magpies, Atherton Roosters, Ravenshoe Tigers and Innisfail Cowboys.

The league is proud of its endeavours to provide a well organised, self disciplining sport to youngsters across the Tablelands.

The name Eacham originally draws itself from Atherton Tablelands area under the former local government of the Eacham Shire encompassing Malanda, Yungaburra and Millaa townships.

However in rugby league terms, the name Eacham originates from a competition dating back to the early 1900’s when senior clubs from Atherton, Mareeba, Millaa Millaa and Malanda played under the Eacham Rugby League banner.

In 1969, a junior competition was formed taking up the name Eacham Junior Rugby League which proudly remains today.

Each year local players are selected to represent at the June NQ Championships in Townsville where greater selection honours can be gained.

Also on Saturday, many potential trophy awards will be presented and includes the Atherton Senior Roosters Rising Star 2018.

FNQ Football in turmoil

With the frenzy of footballs World Cup done and dusted and Australia’s participation merely a glimpse at where Australia stands amongst the elite of the world game we now, in the far north of the state, have come to understand how regional areas outside the capital cities are seen by the hierarchy.

It has come to light that Football Queensland has seen fit to not even attempt to rescue Cairns FC from the clutches of oblivion. On Wednesday night August 22 the Cairns FC football team was told that the club would not be renewing their NPL licence and the team would not be participating in the NPL competition.

The media report came as a shock to the squad on Tuesday, Just prior to the team putting in an excellent performance against last year’s National

champions, Sydney FC in the FFA Cup round of 16 by narrowly going down 2-1.

Football Queensland has remained tight lipped as to why the team was not renewing its licence with a spokesperson stating that they did not think it was appropriate to comment before the last game of the season .Team captain Jamie Carroll said the team is not in a good place at the moment and that the consequences of the team folding will be devastating to the region.

“What do young players who can’t get into an A-League side going to do? Cairns FC was a path for local players to aspire to reach a high level of the game and now that will be taken away, players will have to go to the south east corner to play at that level, It’s just not right,” he said.

Another local, defender Shaun Owens, said that it’ll be

a shame that local footballers, especially the younger ones coming through, won’t have the chance to play at the NPL level without having to relocate.

Former FNQ Bulls player Bronson Koppen said that the players knew nothing about the problems until recent reports.

“It’s pretty bad for the region, everyone is gutted especially Jamie, we proved last Tuesday night that we, as a regional team can compete with the very best in the country and the team, the supporters are being punished because of where we live.”

Cairns FC and Football Queensland released a joint statement last Monday to explain the reasons behind the folding of the team. The Express will bring you that statement via our social network and in next week’s edition.

First time boxers Bulls success in Babinda 2018 Team Mareeba Boxing club boxers Thomas Barnes and Austin Pell travelled to Babinda on Saturday the August 11, to compete in their first bout.

Thomas weighing in at 42kgs went unmatched and Austin Pell weighing in at 70kgs gave away 2 kilos to his opponent Mic Krapen who was boxing for Babinda Boxing Club via Vanuatu at 72 kgs.

The bout was contested over 3 two minute rounds, in a fast paced bout Austin Pell fought strongly against Krapen 29, who whilst listed as a novice boxer appeared to know his way around the ring.

Pell maintained his composure and used good defensive skills to avoid most of the heavy blows throw by Krapen. Countering and attacking with purpose Pell won a unanimous decision.

The Mareeba Bulls premier mens side have shown again their ability to match with the best in the league, but lapses in concentration have cost the Bulls a chance at victory over the marlin Coast Rangers on Saturday night in Mareeba.

The homeside came out firing and youngster Jaydon Wells gave the Bulls the lead seventeen minutes into the game. The Bulls held the lead until halftime looking the better team, but in a case of Déjà vu, early in the second period the Bulls allowed to the Rangers to score two goals in two minutes to take a 2-1 victory in a fiery second half that saw the away side receive four yellow cards and send off to Kimon Toumazos in the 79th minute.

Despite the Bulls pushing hard, they could not find a breakthrough going down 2-1 in a game where young 16 year old Serg Battistan and 19 year old Ivan Jensen were given their starting debuts.

The Bulls reserves have secured second spot on the

FNQ premier league ladder with a 1-0 win over the Rangers. Darcey Mccormack scored a 70th minute winner to seal a spot in the major semi final.

The earlier game was between the Mareeba Bulls and Atherton Eagles with Liam Pozzebon scoring a hatrick in the 4-2 win that just about secures third spot in the finals.

On Friday night at Walker Road Edmonton, the Bulls 1st division and 2nd division boys travelled down and came away with two big wins, the 1st division boys bringing home a 3-1 win over the JCU strikers, while the 2nd division boys brought home a tight 3-2 win with both sides now also locking in second spot in a chance in the major semi final.

This weekend, the mens premier and reserves have the bye, the youth and ladies travel down to JCU on Saturday, while the 1st and 2nd division boys plays at home on Friday night.

Mareeba mum-of-two Tracy Marcel is on a high this week after conquering the Great Pyramid Race by coming second overall in the female category and first in the open women’s race.

The part-time dental assistant and personal trainer was only

beaten by 18 year old professional runner Montana McAvoy.

“She was very emotional after the win,” said husband Vince.

“She set a goal after last year’s race and in the 12 months since she has put in a lot of time and effort into this.”

The race, held on August 18 in Gordonvale, was Tracy’s third attempt. Last year she finished

5th.

The 12km hike is claimed to be one of the toughest of its kind on the planet and up to 8000 people attend every year to watch the athletes. Tracy is a seasoned marathon runner but has recently been tackling some off road events. Her training consists of running six or seven times a week and weight-lifting.

While most of the event participants took the day off after the race, Tracy was instead supporting husband Vince on the Elev8 mountain biking event that took place in Atherton on the Sunday.

“She managed three laps before her legs gave out,” laughed Vince. “She’s amazing.”

The Atherton Roosters have closed out the regular season with a 64-14 win over the Edmonton Storm at Petersen Park on Sunday.

Sunday’s win may not have showcased their trademark flair but it gave the Roosters fifteen wins from their eighteen competition games this year and secured second spot on the final first grade points table.

Cairns Brothers are the 2018 minor premiers with 31 points followed by Atherton 30, Mossman 23, Tully 22, Innisfail 21, Suburbs 20, Kangaroos 18, Ivanhoes 16, Yarrabah 11, Mareeba 6, Edmonton 0.

On Sunday at Edmonton, the Roosters rested several key players for the clash which again gave many of the club’s rising stars a run in the top grade.

Young flyer Kobe Martin got the Roosters off to strong start scoring two tries in the opening ten minutes.

The Roosters led 40-4 at half-time before going onto score a total of eleven tries in their victory. Fullback Reece Munster was outstanding at the

back and crossed for a treble of four pointers.

Roosters coach Graham Clark said it was a good run in the coastal heat for his side as they prepare for the finals in Cairns.

“The weather is now heating up and it is always a bit cooler on the Tablelands,”Clark said.

Clark said his side now heads to Sunday’s first semi-final in good shape.

“We rested several players on Sunday and had a couple come back into the side from injury.”

Atherton’s first semi-final is against Mossman at Barlow Park this Sunday with the winner moving on to meet Cairns Brothers a week later for a spot in the grand final.

“Mossman got us earlier this year and they are a very big side so we need to be at our best,” he said.

In Sunday’s reserve grade game, the Roosters finished off the season with a 30-22 win over Edmonton. The Atherton Roosters under 19 side also play a semi-final this Sunday against Cairns Brothers.
