With crazy hats on their heads, walk, jog and run they did at the Mareeba Rotary Fun Run and Walk.

Held on Sunday at the Bicentennial Lakes, the annual 5km charity event is all about getting active and connecting with the local community. The fun morning out was also a 'Hat Day' event with the aim of helping to lift the lid on mental illness and with today (Wednesday, October 10) being World Mental Health Day, it is fitting that proceeds raised from Sunday are going directly to research helping the one in five Australians affected by a mental illness. Local conqueres English Channel

Former Mareeba Swimming Club member Anne Pleash, has become the 207th Australian person to swim the English Channel.

Anne who recently returned to Australia after completing the mighty challenge said she owes all she has accomplished to those early years in the Mareeba Swimming pool under the watchful eye of Coach Clive Stains.

Anne joined the club at just seven years of age and has always been a swimmer, with the 1500 meters her preferred distance.

The former Mareeba State High School student, who now calls Mission Beach home, said

“It was always something I wanted to do”.

“It was very cold and with about five hours to go into the swim I had a complete melt down where I wanted to quit, but my support crew kept encouraging me and when I could see the French Coast I was determined to finish it,” Miss Pleash said.

“Those early years in the pool taught me a great work ethic and discipline.

“I’ve done the 20km Rottnest Challenge swim from Perth to Rottnest Island a number of times, but nothing compares to this. It completely drains you of every ounce of energy and it's taking some time for me to recuperate.

“I’ll be back at work soon, but I have my sights set on completing the Triple Crown which takes in the English Channel, the Catalina Channel and Manhattan Island circumnavigation in 2020.” a determined Anne said.

A very proud boss and Federal Member for Kennedy Bob Katter said “Anne’s a super achiever. She’s a Mareeba/Normanton girl and every inch a North Queenslander. It was an extraordinary swim.”

After putting on some considerable weight for the Channel swim so her body could cope with the elements, she is now looking to lose that weight by running a half marathon after a hard earned rest.

School’s big 125th celebration An action packed weekend of celebrations is in store for Mareeba’s oldest primary school...

Mareeba State School is all set to celebrate its 125th anniversary this weekend with former students and teachers returning from all corners of the country to take part in the three day event.

The celebrations kick off this Friday night with a meet and greet at Mareeba United Football Club at 6.30pm. Those attending will enjoy catching up with old school friends and reminiscing about the good old days.

Continuing on the next day, Saturday October 13, the school will host a special celebration day from 10am, with a full day of things to see and do.

The day will include the presentation of the time capsule contents and a roll call of past and present students. There will also be hourly school tours, formalities and presentations during the day.

Current students will also

have an art show in the library and there will be a photo display in the staff room.

Food and refreshments will be available all day, raffle tickets will be on hand for purchasing for school fundraising and envelopes for the new time capsule contribution will also be on sale for just $10.

The official welcome will take part at 1pm, followed by performances by the school choir and the indigenous dance group.

Former student Alex Srhoj will MC the day and former principal Peter Beatts will be the guest speaker, followed by the official cutting of the cake.

The celebrations will wrap up on Sunday October 14, with a colour run on the school oval.

Make the change for change for 19-year old Lauren Searle, the idea of being able to recycle her used plastic containers and get change in return is a win-win.

And now, just like the good old days, from November 1 this year you will be able to receive 10c for reusable plastic bottles at specific locations throughout the state.

“I wasn’t around back in the day when a similar program used to exist, so I am really excited to now be able to recycle my used drinks,” said Miss Searle.

“I wish we had a better recycling program in Mareeba, but this will be a good start and my way of helping to keep Australia clean.”

Queenslanders use close to 3 billion beverage containers every year. The Containers for Change program is being introduced in an effort to curb the millions of tonnes of waste that litter out streets, waterways and oceans.

These containers are the second most littered item in the state, despite the fact they can be easily recycled. Beverage container litter is largely as-

sociated with drink consumption in open air settings such as parks, beaches, shopping centres and car parks.

The introduction of a statewide container refund scheme will give people an incentive to collect and return containers for recycling, in exchange for a 10 cent refund payment. This will help to reduce the amount of drink containers that are littered and increase Queensland’s recycling rate.

The scheme will also provide benefits to social enterprises, communities, and regional and remote areas by creating new job, recycling and fundraising opportunities.

Most aluminium, glass, plastic, steel and liquid paperboard beverage containers between 150ml and three litres are eligible for a refund when returned to a container refund point.

There are some beverage containers that are not eligible for a refund. Generally excluded containers are those that are less than 150ml and greater than three litres. Other excluded containers include; any plain milk containers,

glass containers which have contained wine or pure spirits, containers 1L or more which have contained flavoured milk, pure fruit or vegetable juice, cask wine or cask water, concentrated/undiluted cordial or syrup containers, sachets above 250ml which have contained wine.

Excluded containers can still be recycled through exist-

ing kerbside collection or dropoff services including your local waste transfer station.

Queensland’s container refund scheme will commence on November 1, with more than 230 in operation across the state. The number of these sites will continue to grow as the scheme rolls out.

LIKE many small Australian towns, Mareeba and the Tablelands has been hit by ICE. In a bid to put a freeze on this dangerous and deadly drug, the Australian Anti Ice Campaign are in Mareeba tonight and encourage the communtiy to come along and join the fight againist ICE. Following on from the highly successful educational information day held at Mareeba High School last month, the team are back and invite all community members, service providers and businesses of Mareeba and surrounding areas to the free Community Ice Forum.

Being held tonight, Wednesday October 10, at the Mareeba International Club, the event is all about raising awareness of ICE and other drugs in the community.

The AAIC aims to expose the drug Ice for what it really is – an

insidiously poisonous chemical concoction that eventually, and often rapidly, destroys the physical and mental health of almost everyone who uses it, with the destruction of families and friendships, and often suicide, as the ultimate outcome.

‘Dont’t try it, not even once’ is the message they are striving to get across into schools, businesses and homes.

Local Police will be speaking along with a guest speaker and former addict from the Australian Anti Ice Campaign who will share her powerful story about ICE. With the increasing effects of ICE in our communities we all need to know the facts and help educate those we love before its to late.

Veterinary Students share $1000 bursary

Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) Councillor Anthony Ball recently presented James Cook University (JCU) veterinary students Logan McNamara from Ravenshoe and Tessa Scanlan from Lake Eacham with a $1,000 bursary.

The TRC bursary recognises academic excellence by a JCU undergraduate studying their final (fifth) year at Tableland Veterinary Service (TVS).

The students must also have attended high school on the Tablelands.

“Students love coming to Malanda to study,” said Councillor Ball.

“This is a really good model of

industry working with a tertiary institution to further the opportunities for our young people as well as showcase the Tablelands as a region of professional excellence.

“Logan has recently returned from completing an externship in dairy cattle medicine at Matamata Veterinary Services in New Zealand.

“While Tessa has completed her externship at Taronga Western Plains Zoo in Dubbo,” said Councillor Ball.

The bursary recipients said they really appreciated the funds.

“The financial assistance will be invaluable in covering the costs associated with transport and accommodation during our last few

clinical placements.

“As Tableland locals, we truly appreciate the ongoing support of our university studies,” said Tessa and Logan.

Tessa appreciates the experiences she’s had while at TVS. “JCU veterinary studies on the Tablelands offers an excellent range of practical work experiences with a large variety of animals giving you a good foundation to starting your veterinary profession,” she said.

Logan believes that distance is not a barrier to studies.

“You can achieve anything if you put your mind to it, as being from a regional area is not a hindrance,” he said.

Local stars in new video about threatened species

Local star: Alan Gillanders features in a new movie about protecting threatened species in the Wet Tropics.

A Tablelands resident features in a new video to help protect the Wet Tropics’ threatened species including Mabi forest, bettongs and the Kuranda tree frog.

Alan Gillanders (pictured) is part of “Explore the Secret Lives of the Region’s Endangered Species” – a video that has brought together the tourism industry, scientists, traditional owners and environmental groups.

Mr Gillanders, who is part of Trees for Evelyn and Atherton Tablelands (TREAT), says the region’s “beautiful rich red soils” are great for Mabi forest

and agriculture.

“Most Mabi forests were cleared over the years and some small patches have recently suffered fires but there are a lot of good things happening,’’ he said.

“Many farmers are planting around little patches to make them more secure and TREAT and Barron Catchment Care have been building corridors between small patches.”

Mabi forest – which only occurs in North Queensland and is found at the Curtain Figtree National Park and Wongabel State Forest – is nationally listed as

critically endangered. It is home to tree kangaroos, cassowaries and musky rat kangaroos.

The new video was funded through the Australian Government’s National Landcare Program via a Terrain NRM Threatened Species Grant. It is the product of an alliance between between Tourism Tropical Queensland, the Wet Tropics Management Authority, Terrain NRM and community groups.

The video has been released in National Biodiversity Month – in a region that is home to half of Australia’s bird species, a third of its mammal species and

4000 plant species.

In a section about the northern bettong, Cairns’s Dr Sandra Abell talks about the tiny kangaroo’s four populations near Mareeba, with the main one in the Lamb Range.

Wet Tropics Management Authority project officer Terry Carmichael said there were currently 139 threatened species in the Wet Tropics region and as changes to habitat and climate continued, it was important to plan how to protect them from extinction and find constructive ways to share the landscapes with them.

Tourism Tropical North Queensland chair Wendy Morris said the richness of Tropical North Queensland’s flora and fauna was the key to its appeal as a tourism destination.

“We are blessed to have two world heritage areas right on our doorstep,’’ she said.

“Visitors come here to experience the abundance of wildlife on the reef and in our rainforests so it makes sense for us to help promote the amazing work of the many passionate conservationists, researchers, volunteers and community experts in our region.”

It’s time Queensland Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey, recently agreed to extend the National Highway (Bruce Highway) from the Cairns CBD to include Sheridan Street and the Captain Cook highway through to Smithfield as part of the National Highway Network Extension (NHNE).

However, Warren Entsch, Federal Member for Leichhardt, is also pushing for Mr Bailey to include the Kuranda Range as part of the extension so that the Federal Government can also contribute funds when the Kuranda Range Road is finally given the upgrade it so desperately needs.

At a press conference on October 2, at the bottom of the Kuranda Range, Mr Entsch said it was great Queensland Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey had finally decided to put the interests of Cairns and Far North Queensland ahead of political point scoring.

Flanked by representatives of five local chambers of commerce, two mayors, Advance Cairns and shadow minister for transport and main roads, Steve Minnikin, Mr Entsch further emphasised the importance of including the Kuranda Range as part of the extension.

For the Federal Government to consider allocating funds to the eventual upgrade and rebuilding of the Kuranda Range, it is vital that it be part of the National Highway Network Extension.

“This year alone there have been 82 accidents on the range and over the last 10 years there have been over 570 occasions when the range has been closed,” said Mr Entsch.

“This is clearly a key corridor that needs to be identified and while we welcome the extension of the National Highway to Smithfield we are encouraging minister Bailey to include the Kuranda Range Road.

“It’s time we stopped playing “catch up” and started to plan for the future. It’s going to be difficult and it’s going to be expensive, but it needs to be identified as a critical road for the future economy of our region.” he said.

Mayor of Mareeba Shire Tom Gilmore said “We have wasted the last 12 years arguing about the this road which is the main link to the tablelands and we can’t afford to waste any more time in respect to the planning and construction, it’s a shambles now it will be a disaster in the next couple of years.”

Also showing his support was Bob Manning, Mayor of Cairns Regional Council, when he said “I support this move to include the Kuranda Range road, this has been going on for so long now. I notice that the under river rail road in Brisbane has a price tag of $15 billion when this $1 Billion is too much?”

Trent Twomey from Advance Cairns echoed the sediments saying “We stand here at the base of what is the biggest road death trap in far north Queensland. This road is not just an inconvenience for business, we need this road to be identified as a road of strategic importance so that people from the Tablelands can access essential services like health and education.”

Joe Moro, President of the Mareeba Chamber of Commerce, said that the Chamber has always supported the improvements of the road between Mareeba and Cairns.

“It is important infrastructure for the economic development of the towns on the Tablelands and it's also an important freight link to the tablelands – a missing link if you like in the transport infrastructure.

Self-proclaimed “greenie”

and President of the Atherton Tableland Chamber of Commerce Christine Doan said “As an environmentalist at some point we need to bow down to reality and the reality is that this is non-functional. We have to do something about it, take the environment into consideration, but we also have to look after the economy because the environment will die without an economy.”

Debbie-Anne Bender, CEO Cairns Chamber of Commerce also said “It’s a clear demonstration that all the people here today have come together because the Kuranda Range needs to be fixed and I call on the State government to put money into the building of the road which is very important to our region.”

State Shadow Minister for Transport and Main Roads Steve Minnikin finished with saying the State government needs to govern more than just south east Queensland – this is where the money needs to go next.

Beware – it’s tick season

In Australia, it is estimated that at least 10,000 cats and dogs are presented to veterinarians for treatment each year with many animals dying as a result of just one tick bite.

Tableland Veterinary Service’s vet, Dr Tamara Olley who is based in Atherton, is urging pet owners to prioritise prevention, avoiding an expensive and sometimes heartbreaking trip to the vet.

With the paralysis tick being one of the most dangerous parasites in Australia, felines are at risk of death from just one tick.

Atherton Local Pelita Friscia noticed one night that her nineyear-old dog, Hunter, was not eating. He started vomiting and went wobbly in the back legs.

She thought Hunter had been bitten by a snake and decided to

Instead, Pelita found a paralysis tick on Hunter’s chest.

Hunter was rushed to the vet where the team removed a tick

and put him on anti-venom.

He stayed in hospital for three days. Pelita recalls the incident, commenting, “We were expecting the worst. It was a huge relief he recovered.”

Students set to join in colour run AS part of the schools 125 year celebrations this weekend, students at Mareeba State School will be raising money for their school with exercise as they take part in a Colour Fun Run this Sunday, October 14.

Part of a state wide School Fun-Run program, the event connects schools with the wider community to raise vital funds while promoting student health and financial education.

Last year 68203 students from Queensland schools took part in the fundraising activity raising over $1,009,395.75 for the state.

School P & C president Marita Roberts said students have so

far enjoyed setting their fundraising goals.

“Our students have been involving family and friends in their fundraising efforts for Performing Arts, while they gear up for our fun run,” Marita said.

Last year over $4.3 million dollars was raised by schools, with $72,842 raised by the highest fundraising school and $8,023 raised by the highest fundraising student. Now in its 31st year of supporting schools, the School Fun-Run program has proudly assisted them to raise more than $100 million in that time.

This year over 280,000 students will participate in a Fun Run and collectively they will

run 560,000 kms which is the equivalent of running 13 times around the world.

School fun runs help children learn about setting and achieving financial goals and establishing healthy habits that will stay with them throughout their lives.

Parents, families, neighbours and local businesses have been generousley offering their support and donations to students who will be getting fit and having fun in the name of fundraising for their school.

Friendship tour of the Tablelands

VISITING Rotarians from the United States of America enjoyed a tour of the Tablelands last week as part of the Rotary Friendship Exchange program.

The team of nine from Rotary District 7570 in Virginia and Tennessee, had an action packed week with local Rotarians who showed them the sights of Kuranda, Mareeba and the

The international program gives Rotarians and their families the opportunity to experience different cultures and to build international friendships.

Benefits of the program are vast. It allows clubs and individuals the chance to broaden international understanding, explore a profession or job in a dif-

ferent context, build enduring friendships, establish a foundation for peace and service, gain opportunities for active project involvement and support, learn about a region’s people, food, languages, customs, and history and to find partners for grants.

Past District Governor Ida Portella, who was one of many that played tour guide to the team during their stay said the program vital to tourism and enhancing international relations.

“It’s a great program and its great way to promote our region abroad,” said Ms Portella.

“Many of the visitors had never been to Australia before and have definitely never heard of the Mareeba and the Tablelands. “They will now go home and tell their friends and family what a great place we live in.” she said.

Range Road – something new is needed

The problems with the range road (The Express, 3/10) are often viewed as intractable. Despite many “improvements”, including lower speed limits, fewer overtaking opportunities and smoother bitumen, the crashes, blockages and delays just get worse.

If we choose to massively upgrade any one of the existing range roads while keeping it open to ever-increasing traffic we can expect far worse delays for at least a decade, probably longer. Plus, keeping a road open while it is rebuilt triples the cost of the finished project.

Closing any range road for three to four years to re-construct it would ruin the lives of those who depend on it. And can you imagine the Kuranda Range’s 10,000 vehicles per day streaming down the Gillies and Rex-Cook ranges? It would be ugly.

There’s an obvious solution, of course, build a new centrallyaligned road that doesn’t take traffic until it’s finished. The late Arthur Leinster, the late Bruce Stapledon and I lobbied for such a road in the 1999 Kuranda Range consultation.

We raised a 5,000 signature petition supporting it (pre-internet).

It was ignored by the Brisbane

government.

That proposed central range crossing was based on the Davies Creek Road to Bridle Creek Road to Lake Morris Road to Reservoir Road route which lies in the existing powerline corridor. It’s on a nearstraight line between Cairns and Mareeba and cuts out the Kuranda-Smithfield loop entirely.

But there’s now a better option than the Davies Creek short-cut surface road. Start a 14-kilometre tunnel at White Rock that comes out near Bridle Creek, nineteen kilometres east of Mareeba, and joins the Kennedy Highway at the Davies Creek Road turn-off. It would have the gentle incline required to meet heavy transport highway standards.

Half the tunnel’s excavated fill could be used to bund four square kilometres of East Trinity. Those bunds could then be filled by dredging the shipping channel properly and the whole lot then capped with the remaining tunnel spoil.

The four square kilometres of new near-CBD land could then be developed and sold to pay for the tunnel, the dredging and for a bridge across the inlet via Admiralty Island. Naturally this common-sense proposal will be studiously ignored by our officials, as it is whenever it is raised.

With 40% of food insecure households families having dependent children, the funds raised during the winter appeal have helped struggling families make ends meet.

Click and collect grocery shopping creates jobs Coles has expanded its online service with the launch of Click&Collect at Mareeba, creating six new jobs in the local community.

Residents in Mareeba and neighbouring suburbs can now shop for their groceries online and collect them from the service desk at Coles.

A recent market insights report revealed online shopping is growing at a rapid rate (up 14 per cent between March 2017 and March 2018)[1], and Coles online has seen double digit growth as more Australians choose the service.

Coles Mareeba Store Support Manager Katrina Wallbridge said convenience and an easy online experience are priorities for our customers when it comes to shopping online.

“We know demand for online shopping in Mareeba is high, particularly for families and those who lead busy lifestyles.

“The grant will be used to research the identities of people in unmarked graves in Thomas Park and the Atherton Pioneer Cemetery,” said Mayor Joe Paronella “Thomas Park, on Hastie Road, has three headstones and was known as Carrington Cemetery.

“The Atherton Pioneer Cemetery, on the AthertonHerberton Road, is known as Samuel Dansie Park and was Atherton’s cemetery between 1897 and 1927.

“Approximately 803 people are buried here and many of the graves remain unmarked.

Grant applications open for $200m New support trailer for local Ambulance better regions giving back to tHE community

Communities in Far North Queensland are invited to apply for a share in $200 million under Round 3 of the federal government’s highly-successful Building Better Regions Fund.

Federal Leichhardt MP Warren Entsch is urging communities in the region to take advantage of the fund and get local infrastructure and communitybuilding projects of all sizes off the ground.

He said the BBRF would support job-creating infrastructure and community projects with grants available from $20,000 to $10 million.

“This fund is dedicated to unlocking the economic potential in Far North Queensland and I encourage all eligible organisations with a great project idea to apply for the third round of funding,” Mr Entsch said.

“Our region has been very successful under the Building Better Regions Fund, having already seen seven projects including the $4.4 million Cairns Spinal Life Healthy Living Centre and the $1.5 million Mapoon Accommodation Centre being started and delivered.

“Extending the BBRF to a third round will allow community organisations that may have previously missed out to have the opportunity to expand and further develop their applications, allowing us to continue our investment in Far North Queensland and Cape York com-

Ratch, developers of the Mount Emerald Wind Farm near Walkamin, delivered a new support trailer to the Station. The trailer is stocked with a number of portable gazebos, water and other essential equipment to help protect those involved in emergencies and other incidents.

Ratch Community Engagement Facilitator Kim Forde said the trailer was a precursor to its annual $200,000 Community Benefit Fund, which comes into effect once the Mount Emerald project reaches completion in November.

“The Community Benefits Fund was set up to sponsor projects or initiatives that improve the quality of life for local com-

munities.

Deputy Prime Minister and Regional Development Minister Michael McCormack said the projects delivered under Round 3 will ensure regional and remote communities continue to thrive.

“We have had fantastic outcomes over the first two funding rounds of the Coalition Government’s Building Better Regions Fund and I expect Round 3 to deliver more of the same with up to $45 million earmarked to increase tourism,” Mr McCormack said.

“Tourism is a major industry in many of our regional areas, and this investment in tourismrelated infrastructure projects will draw more visitors to remote and regional Australia and the economic benefits they bring with them.

“In this third round we are investing a further $200 million – a clear indication of the government’s commitment to investing in projects that create jobs, build regional economies and ensure strong and resilient regional communities into the future.”

COCONUT LEMON BLISS BALLS Ingredients

1. Line a baking tray with parchment paper, set aside.

2. Add all ingredients to a high speed food processor.

3. Pulse a few times to incorporate ingredients then process on high until well combined and mixture begins to stick together.

4. Pick up approx. 1-2 tbsp of mixture to create small round balls.

5. Add more desiccated coconut if mixture doesn’t hold it’s shape when formed into balls.

Youth join in PCYC Cup

THE annual PCYC Mareeba Cup was held last Friday, October 5. The annual junior Rugby League carnival, held at the Mareeba Rugby League grounds, was attended by hundreds of teenagers from across the region who enjoyed a great day of fun and footy.

Fun and heaps of action was had all day on the field.

Come and try Sailing day on Lake Tinaroo Tinaroo Sailing Club is holding a Discover Sailing day from 2pm to 4pm this Saturday October 13.

“We’ll have all sorts of boats skippered by experienced sailors for anyone of any age to try,”

said Tinaroo Sailing Club Commodore Roger Wadley.

“You can also explore our club and learn about the programs and facilities we offer.

“All you need to do is wear sun smart clothes and sunscreen,

and we'll supply everything else,” said Mr Wadley.

Whip It movie night with Roller Derby ladies

Whip It – the iconic movie about the modern day form of Roller Derby and this Friday night the local roller derby ladies invite you to come along, meet the local league stars and kick back with Whip it.

The night, hosted by the Tableland Roller Derby League, will be an information and movie night all in one held at the Atherton State High School Hall on Friday October 12.

The movie perfectly captures the vibe during Roller Derby's reinvention in the early noughties, the movement that invented Flat track, the most popular form of Roller Derby played today.

But they stress that skating is not required for the movie night or in general.

“There are lots of positions within the League where skating is not required. Some people join Roller Derby just for the social aspect and we need non skating officials, volunteers and supporters. Everyone is welcome to any of our events, not just those who

This November, the Stroke Foundation is challenging the community to Stride4stroke, a physical activity campaign which raises funds to support vital programs for stroke survivors and their families.

Registrations are now open and participants can set their own activity goal and fundraising target.

Ravenshoe woman Nicola Baker will take part in Stride4stroke and will stride for her 14 year-old son Jed, who had a stroke at just 11 months old.

“Jed’s stroke came as a huge shock. It not only changed his life, it changed mine too,” Nicola said.

“While life has been isolating at times and full of challenges and doctor appointments, each day is a gift. We didn’t know whether Jed would be able to go to school, let alone reach his teens.

“Jed has had three rounds of brain surgery and monitoring is just a part of life, but he is a wonderful kid who has brought me so much joy. I want to help support others in a similar position.”

Nicola will aim to walk 10 kilometres each day of November and has encouraged friends to join her. Nicola said being part of a team would ensure she walked every day and would help raise even more funds.

“Everyone I know has a personal connection to stroke – whether it be a parent, grandparent, friend or colleague. Many have seen first-hand how devastating it can be,” Nicola said.

“By taking part in Stride4stroke, we will not only be helping to raise funds to help Stroke Foundation make recovery from stroke better for families, there is the added bonus of reducing our own risk of stroke by getting active,” she said.

Huge end to stellar year for Roosters The Atherton Senior Roosters Rugby League Club wrapped up their 100th season on Saturday night with the club’s annual Presentation of Trophies dinner at the Atherton Hotel.

A strong crowd was in attendance to see seasoned campaigner Jermaine Pedro named the All Wheel Drive Centre Roosters First Grade Player of the Year.

Jermaine Pedro made his first grade debut at the Roosters as an eighteen-year-old in 2009 struck up a very strong half’s partnership with Todd Carney.

Young flyer Kobe Martin was another big winner on Saturday taking home the rising Star Award and Under 19 Best Back Trophy.

RUN Bulls come home OUT

empty handed The Mareeba Bulls went into the weekend’s FNQ Football grand finals with high hopes.

With four grades taking part, more than any other club, the Bulls were hoping for wins across the board, but things did not quite go to plan with all teams coming home empty handed.

The action started on Friday night with the Bulls 2nd division boys taking on the Marlin Coast Rangers. The Mareeba side started the match the stronger team with Sam Girgenti and Sandro Soncin controlling proceedings in the middle of the park. The Bulls had a chance to take the lead with Darren Rains and Liam Pozzebon coming close, but it was the Rangers who scored first off a corner midway through the opening 45.

Both sides went into the sheds at the break with the Rangers leading 1-0.

In the second period the Bulls again looked the stronger of the two sides with RJ Leporati and Soncin having a great chance to draw level. But with just 20 minutes to go the Rangers scored from nowhere to make it 2-0. It then went from bad to worse as Ross Malfitana was sin-binned for 10 minutes and the Rangers took full advantage with one man down scoring 3 goals in ten minutes to round the match to a 5-0 win.

The Bulls 1st division boys then took to the pitch kicking off their grand final match against the Douglas Dragons.

In a very fiery and fast opening 20 minutes, the Bulls came close with Eric Iacutone having the best chance. But disaster struck when captain Daniel Schincariol was sent off just after the 20 minute mark, reducing

the Bulls to 10 men for the remainder of the match. Soon after the Dragons took the lead and the 1-0 scoreline into the break.

In the second period the Bulls fought valiantly with 10 men, holding the Dragons out and with only 10 minutes remaining the Bulls broke away and looked to finally have their chance with Liam Pozzebon, Enver Selita and Chrsitian Mukadi all bearing down on goals, only for the opportunity to go missing. The Dragons then went down the other end and scored to break the efforts of the Bulls backline.

Then as the Bulls pushed late in the game, the Dragons scored another to win 3-1 and give the Bulls two losses from Friday night.

On Saturday the Bulls premier ladies started the action against the hot favourites, the Edge Hill Tigers.

After a fast paced opening 10 minutes where the Tigers threw everything at the Bulls, they opened the scoring to make it 1-0. Then shortly after the Ti-

gers made it 2-0, then with 25 minutes into the first half it became 3-0. The Bulls then fought back into the game and held on for halftime.

In the second period the lady Bulls lifted and fought back against the Tigers and gave everything they had. Despite the Bulls having a couple of close chances with Jeannae Kalinau and having a goal disallowed to Kaleigh Cappella, the Tigers scored two more to round out a 5-0 win against the Bulls.

In what was the ladies first grand final appearance in 13 years, they played their hearts out in front of a huge travelling support group, which was the largest of the day by all reports.

The Bulls reserves then took to the field against the league premiers, the Innisfail Cutters.

The Bulls came out the better side with Dennis Allen and Luch Da Rocha controlling the midfield. They should have taken the lead early on with Damian Wildman and Dylan Cummings both having close chances. But

but the pressure did finally pay off with Jamie Wilesmith scoring midway through the first half and the Bulls took the 1-0 lead into the break.

In the second period, having put so much into the first 45, the Bulls dropped a little and the Cutters came a bit more into the game. But the Bulls still didn’t look like conceding until disaster struck with only 30 seconds left on the clock. A mix up in the box allowed the Cutters to draw level, then with no time remaining more disaster struck. With the Bulls scrambling in front of goal, a Bulls own goal gave the Cutters a unlikely 2-1 win.

The Bulls played in four grand finals, more than another club in FNQ Football, but were unable to bring home any silverware this year. But once again the Bulls flag flew the strongest with the clubs travelling supporters out numbering anyone other club on both Friday and Saturday.

Parnell strikes again

Atherton got a win against Cassowary Coast at Miller Oval on Saturday in their Cricket Far North T20 clash.

The home side won the toss and put Atherton in to bat and were pretty pumped to get a couple of big wickets early, and have Atherton 2-24 before Paul Nasser and Michael Raso settled things in the middle and took the score to 92.

Raso returning to his home club after a few seasons away top-scored with 43 off 31 balls.

Fred Pittorino supported with 15 as Atherton closed their innings 130.

Dylan Pettingill and Seppe Barletta opened the bowling, and restricted Cassowary to 18 off 6 overs in a tidy spell. Paul Nasser, Tom Boorman and Dan Parnell finished the job taking 7 wickets for 35 runs in 7 overs and dismissing Cassowary for

76 runs.

Dan Parnell celebrated his first 1st Grade hat-trick in what has been an outstanding season for him so far.

Atherton have a Bye next week and will return to Loder Park on 20 October to take on Rovers in the first 50 over 1-day match of the season.

The team will be without regulars Dan Parnell, Tom Boorman, Paul Nasser and Michael Salerno who have been selected in the CFN Fusion team to contest the Bulls Masters Country Challenge in Mackay.
