Local ironmen set to take on the world

MAREEBA locals Kevin Davies and Jose Lopez have secured a spot at the 2019 Ironman 70.3 World Championship in the 50-54 and 45-49 categories respectively to be held in Nice, France in October.

Davies secured his spot with a 19th place finish at Cairns Ironman last weekend, while his training teammate Lopez achieved qualification at a Port Macquarie event earlier this year.

Davies noted his excitement about his qualification.

“It’s something Jose and I have worked for over the past year,” he said.

“We both have made a lot of sacrifices, particularly at home, so it’s really pleasing to see it pay off.”

Mr Davies, who achieved qualification in the Cairns Ironman recently, noted his appreciation to Tracy Marcel for the rigorous training regime she put him and Jose through in preparation for the event.

“Tracy’s commitment in getting us ready over the past

year has been fantastic, and we couldn’t have done it without her,” he said.

“While it is tough balancing home-life, work and training, it makes it easier having such a great group of people to train and prepare with.”

This is not the first time Mr Davies has achieved qualifications for the World Championships, having done so in 2014.

“It’s great to be back competing at a world level again,” he said.

“I’m going to have a week

or two off after the Cairns Ironman to relax a bit, and then I’ll be looking to ramp up the training in preparation for October.”

Fellow Mareeba local and training mate Jose Lopez largely echoed Mr Davies’ sentiments.

“While we’re competing individually, it’s a privilege to be able to represent Australia in an international competition,” he said.

“I was lucky enough to have competed at the World

Championships back in 2016, so I’ve got a bit of an understanding of what’s required and hopefully I can perform well come October.

“I didn’t have the best performance at the most recent event in Cairns, so I’m looking forward to getting stuck into training with Kevin and doing the best I can in Nice.”

Both Mr Lopez and Mr Davies both noted that they would like to thank their families for their unwavering support over the past year.

Call My Doctor negotiations still underway

WHILE it appeared as though the Tablelands in-home and doctor telehealth service Call My Doctor was going to close last week due to a pay dispute with the North Queensland Primary Health Network (NQPHN), both parties are working on a resolution.

“Negotiations are continuing but we believe we are productively dealing with the issues we’ve had with NQPHN,” Call My Doctor Managing Director Lindsay Stewart said.

“We are pleased to be continuing the service in the region and look forward to expanding the Call My Doctor service with 100% fully bulk-billed clinics.

“And we are ramping up the service to ensure the 72,000 households in the region are satisfied.

In addition, the recruitment of doctors continues to be a vital part of our ongoing success.”

Mr Stewart said he would

like to thank the community for their support of the in-home and telehealth service since Call My Doctor’s inception earlier this year.

Mr Stewart also expressed his gratitude to the numerous businesses and media personnel who have helped support such an essential service in Far North Queensland.

In a statement released by the North Queensland Primary Health Network, Chief Executive Officer John Gregg said NQPHN is not in arrears to Call My Doctor Pty Ltd. “NQPHN is constructively addressing the allegations made

by Call My Doctor Pty Ltd with that organisation,” he said.

“NQPHN remains committed to continuous delivery of the right care, in the right place, at the right time to all members of the communities it serves.”

Call My Doctor is an essential service that needs to remain on the Tablelands.

“Because of the nature of issues we experience on the Tablelands relating to long waiting lists and access to doctors, it provides patients with another medical avenue that is extremely useful for this region – particularly on the telehealth side of the business,” he said.

“So it was disappointing to hear that Call My Doctor may have to close, however from Mareeba Chamber of Commerce’s perspective we’re really pleased to see everything getting back on track.

“We’re sure PHN and Call My Doctor are working diligently to sort this out all while ensuring no delay to patients.”

However in a late development, The Express reached out to Federal Member for Kennedy Bob Katter’s office for comment.

“PHN has informed Bob Katter’s office it owes no money to Lindsay from Call My Doctor,” they said.

“PHN is fully committed to ensuring its Federal Government funding is allocated to a reputable service.

“Legal proceedings are now underway and Bob cannot intervene until the matter is resolved.”

Resident critical of Mareeba’s health services The access to quality medical services on the Tablelands has yet again been called into question.

A shortage of doctors and long waiting lists, particularly experienced in Mareeba, has some residents up in arms.

One such resident is Julatten resident Joe Shaw, who visits Mareeba for serious medical injuries he sustained serving in the West Australian Police Force prior to being medically discharged in 1992.

Following an infection in his chest last week, Mr Shaw travelled to Mareeba to seek medical assistance to overcome what was a worsening issue.

“I was concerned that I was coming down with bronchitis and that it could develop into pneumonia,” he said.

“Knowing that Mareeba had several medical centres I asked a number of locals which centres were bulkbilled.

“They all said I had no hope of seeing any doctor, at any of the clinics, because you had to book weeks in advance – even at the Hospital Clinic.”

Mr Shaw proceeded to

the Mareeba Hospital to book an appointment, however was told it would be three weeks before he could see a doctor.

“I cannot believe the lack of medical care in a town like Mareeba and how it forces a large portion of the population to come to the emergency section when it should be a simple doctor visit,” he said.

“Hospital emergency departments are just that, emergency departments. They are expensive to run and become inefficient when they are flooded with people who are unable to see a doctor.

“Every resident of Australia has a right to be provided with high quality medical care.”

Mr Shaw also noted that an essential service like Call My Doctor should remain operational.

“Call My Doctor provides a much-needed service, and the talks surrounding its closure cannot be allowed to happen under any circumstances,” he said.

“Good health care and quality conditions should be standard for all people and that sadly is not the case for those who can’t afford it in Mareeba.”

Property crime a priority ATHERTON’S Arabella Jewellers on 54 Main Street was the scene of a break and enter at approximately 4am last Thursday as two perpetrators dressed in black used a brick and a baseball bat to smash the storefront glass.

The matter is being dealt with the Tablelands Patrol Group Criminal Investigation Branch (CBI).

The incident is one of a number of break and enters that have occurred on the Tablelands, and CBI Detective Senior Sergeant Brett Devine said it’s an ongoing problem being experienced in the patrol area.

“It’s a consistent issue being felt across the Tablelands with a high percentage of perpetrators being youth offenders,” he said.

“However, the main issue we are facing regarding the prevention of property offences are unlocked doors to houses and cars.

“Given that most offenders are opportunistic, it’s imperative owners and tenants are vigilant in ensuring their security measures are up to standard.”

Snr Sgt Devine said property offences are traditionally taken out on vulnerable members of society such as pensioners.

The break and enter damage at Arabella Jewellers in Atherton last week.

“A lot of the time they’re not even aware that they’ve been broken into,” he said.

“A perfect example is with fly screens, they will often flick the lock however don’t key lock it and their property becomes an easy target.”

Snr Sgt Devine said as it relates to break and enters on business premises, he noted that CIB are more than willing to come out and ensure the safety measures in place are up to standard.

Tablelands Patrol Group Inspector Russell Rhodes said property crime is a priority.

“While we don’t have the property and youth crime issues that some other areas in the state do, we do realise it’s an ongoing problem and one that needs to be dealt with,” he said.

“I do however have to commend the detectives in the CIB, we have one of the best clear-up rates when compared to other patrol areas and that’s something we are proud of.

“The detectives here at the Tablelands Patrol Group do an amazing job at identifying perpetrators and they lead their investigations meticulously and with professionalism.”

Businesses express outrage over road upgrade BUSINESS owners and tenants along Mabel Street in Atherton are voicing their displeasure with the road upgrades which are currently two weeks over schedule.

Businesses on Mabel Street were notified that the roadworks would take four weeks, however the Tablelands Regional Council said the upgrade may not be finished until mid-July.

The Express spoke with six business owners who noted that the upgrade has significantly hurt their trade.

Kerry Stewart – Atherton Bakehouse: Not only has our business been hindered by these roadworks, it’s the lack of urgency and correspondence from the Tablelands Regional Council which has angered us. I have had to make changes with

regards to my staff’s hours, and yet they still fail to keep us in the loop as to when this will be finished.

Laurie Sartor – Tableland Laundromat: The loss of trade I’m experiencing as a result of this Mabel Street Project may take me 12 months or longer to recover from.

Megan Peltzer - Northern Suppliers: This whole project has been poorly managed. When we have made complaints regarding this project, TRC have been far from accommodating and blame our lack of trade on the customers as they have referred to them as lazy. They also have not provided us any compensation for the hit our business has had to take financially.

Jane Webber - Dee-Licious Family Delicatessen: We have had so many conflicting stories in relation to this project that none of us know who or what to believe. We had a meeting with TRC CEO (Chief Executive Officer) Justin Commons and the Mayor, and I feel nothing good came out of it. They didn’t give me any clarity on the issue.

Paul Chiari – FNQ Computers: There has been a lack of urgency in getting this project done. When they did the Main Street some time ago they worked at night time and I believe on weekends. I would have liked to have seen the contractors allowed to have done

that for this project as well.

Tablelands Regional Council General Manager of Infrastructure Services Mark Vis said the current situation is not where anyone wants to be, but it is not due to complacency or lack of planning.

“It is in everyone’s interest — the Council’s, contractors and our local businesses and community — to get this project completed as soon as possible,” he said.

“It is also essential that we do a quality job, this project is a significant investment of around $700K and we must not compromise the outcome.

“The project is delayed due to the prolonged, exceptional and unpredicted wet season.

“Unfortunately, we have not had enough consecutive clear days to get the job done.”

Mr Vis said TRC’s initial estimate for project completion, without delays, was two months (start of April to end of May).

“The start of the project was postponed to the start of May at the request of businesses to avoid the busy Easter period,” he said.

“Ongoing wet weather has hindered progress and the contractor has reasonably requested wet weather extensions.

“The current practical completion date is around mid-July although this can shift further if wet weather inhibits work. We are obviously aiming to have the work completed much earlier, but we are unable to provide a date at this time.”

Mr Vis said TRC appreciate the disruption the work has caused to the businesses on Mabel Street.

Mareeba Chamber calls for tougher action on rogue crocodiles THE Mareeba Chamber of Commerce wants the State Government to take a proactive approach to eradicating rogue saltwater crocodiles inhabiting freshwater ways in the Bibhoora area.

On the back of a series of sightings of a 3.8m animal in Two Mile Creek, the chamber fears the Department of Environment and Science’s “sit and wait” approach will only allow the existing saltwater crocodile population to thrive, to the detriment of the community.

Chamber president and Bibhoora mango farmer Joe Moro said the Mareeba community had successfully lobbied the government to amend the Queensland Crocodile Management Plan in 2017 to allow saltwater crocodiles to be removed from the area.

ment that these animals have been introduced into this area,” Mr Moro said.

“However, the existence of

a 3.8m crocodile in Two Mile Creek is evidence that the implementation of the plan, in its current form, is failing.

“But what is more concerning is the unsubstantiated sightings of a crocodile in the Barron River, about 2.5km east

of Two Mile Creek.

“If the animals reach the Barron River, upstream of the Barron River Falls, there is far-

reaching implications for a much larger part of the community who use the river for domestic, farming, recreational and tourism purposes.

“Why should our community wait until something happens, before action is taken.”

Mr Moro said the size and condition of the most recent crocodiles sighted supported calls for a tougher stance.

“Unless the department changes to a proactive approach to eradication, supported by a dedicated team similar to that used for pest/ insect outbreaks, then the population of saltwater crocodiles will continue to thrive to the detriment of the community,” Mr Moro said.

“For this to occur, animals must also be eradicated from Lake Mitchell as well.”

Tableland girls take over show THE Miss Cairns Show Awards were held on Saturday June 8 at the De Jarlais Function Centre in Cairns.

The annual Miss Cairns Show is a local competition aimed at finding a young women to act as an ambassador for the Cairns Show Agricultural Movement.

Entrants are judged on their knowledge, presentation, passion for the agricultural show movement and their community.

The competition was open to single females aged between 18 and 28, living within Cairns and surrounding areas.

The 2019 winner of Miss Cairns Show was local Tableland girl Paige Schofield of Tolga while runner up was Rowena Petersen of Mareeba.

Paige said she was “very shocked” when she was announced as Miss Cairns Show.

“I was super excited and pleased that the judges thought I was the best person for this role,” she said.

“This experience certainly pushed me out of my comfort

zone.

“But overall it was a fantastic experience and I would recommend it to anyone.”

As Miss Cairns Show, Miss Schofield will attend numerous functions throughout the year including this year’s Cairns show on July 18, 19 and 20.

“If there are any young girls looking to do it (Miss Cairns Show) I would say to just give it a go,” she said.

“It’s also a great way to get your name out there.

“It allows you to grow as a person and build your confidence.”

Runner up Rowena Petersen encouraged other ladies to “definitely do it.”

“It’s a massive confidence boost,” she said.

“It gets you out into the community. “It was something I’ve always wanted to do.”

Dog walkers needed THE Mareeba Animal Refuge is looking for kind hearted animal lovers to help keep their dogs fit, active and happy.

Volunteers are always needed at the Mareeba Animal Refuge including dog walkers.

Volunteers will be asked to take dogs out on walks to help keep them happy; people interested in volunteering should have prior experience with dogs.

Manager of Mareeba Animal Refuge Jennifer Walsh said that they have “anything from 15 to 25 dogs available for walking.”

“We walk them every day seven days a week every morning,” she said. “The more walkers we have the longer walks the dogs get. “Walkers must have enclosed shoes.”

Volunteers looking to walk dogs will be supervised on a sign in and sign off sheet monitoring their activity.

Any children under the age of 15 looking to walk some dogs will need to be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

“Its good exercise,” said Jennifer. “The interaction with the

animals is good for your health, plus it’s a good bit of fun.”

If dog walking isn’t your speed the Mareeba Animal Refuge offers an alternative for more feline disposed people.

Cat lovers are needed at the Mareeba Animal refuge for the numerous cats and kittens that need socialisers and people to cuddle with.

Nullinga forgotten by State WHILE the Palaszczuk Government vowed and declared their support for regional Queensland when handing down their State Budget last week, there was one glaring omission from their list of funding commitments – the Nullinga Dam. The water infrastructure

development has been at the forefront of the Liberal National Party’s campaign in this region for some time now, and the Shadow Minister for Agricultural Industry Development and Fisheries and Forestry Tony Perrett noted Labor’s lack of action when it comes to a project as vital as Nullinga

Dam. "Unsurprisingly the budget provided no funding at all for the Nullinga Dam,” he said.

"The LNP understands how important Nullinga Dam is for Far North Queensland which is why it forms a key part of our economic plan to deliver water security for our regions.

Mr Perrett said unlike Annastacia Palaszczuk, the LNP have a plan to build more dams across Queensland.

"While the anti-dams and anti-regions Labor Government is destroying jobs in North Queensland, the LNP has an economic plan to deliver more jobs and better job

security,” he said.

The Express reached out to Member for Cook Cynthia Lui for a comment however a reply was not received before going to print.

The Nullinga Dam has remained a hot button issue on the Tablelands for a number of years, and with the Queensland

state election next year rapidly approaching, both party’s stance on water infrastructure development in the region could be a major factor for residents when they head to the ballot box.

The Queensland state election is scheduled to be held on Saturday, October 31, 2020.

Staff recognised as best in State TABLELANDS Regional Council has returned from the recent Local Government Managers Association (LGMA) Awards with two honours.

“Our Treatment Operations Team has taken out the LGMA Award for Excellence in Teamwork Award in recognition of their outstanding approach to servicing five sewage treatment plants, five water treatment plants and approximately 50 reticulation network water quality sample points located within 320km of reticulation pipework,” said a very proud Mayor Joe Paronella.

“As a small Council with a substantial amount of water and sewage infrastructure to support and maintain, effective use of limited resources is critical.

“Staffing resources are stretched across water quality sampling, treatment plant moni-

toring and maintenance, and legislative in-house testing.

“The treatment operators have excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills as well as an in-depth understanding of various roles including sampling technicians, laboratory works, administration, small equipment repair and manual handling.

“Ensuring sufficient resources to secure 24/7 operation of water supply and sewerage processes is an essential component of their work.

“With only nine operators spread across a region covering 11,000km2, outstanding collaboration and communication within the team and wider organisation is imperative.

“Our treatment operators excel in this capacity — the support and information-sharing between them is strong and each

operator, while assigned to an area and specific plants, will go out of their way to assist other operators.

“This has built a strong foundation of trust and respect between staff and a culture of collaboration to achieve the best outcomes for Council and the community,” said Mayor Paronella.

The Community Revegetation Nursery was a finalist for the LGMA Excellence for Sustainability Award.

“While they didn’t bring the trophy home, it was an honour for this team to be recognised for their sustainable practices,” said Mayor Joe Paronella.

“The nursery grows native rainforest species for revegetation projects that have contributed to over 280ha of plantings over the past 30 years.

Knuth slams Government Tariff and waste levy MEMBER for Hill Shane Knuth MP has raised both issues of the damaging waste levy and the removal of Tarrif 37 and its devastating effects on local businesses and the community in Parliament last week week.

The State Government has decided to remove tariff 37 from July 2020. This will force Queensland foundries onto a higher tariff, increasing electricity costs by a further 40 per cent. From 1 July 2019, foundry waste charges will increase from $64,000 to $144,000 for the next 12 months—an increase of $80,000 a year.

One big example of the consequences of this is the Northern Iron & Brass Foundry near Innisfail that has already been hit with a 126% increase due to the waste levy, and now will be

slugged a 40% increase in electricity charges.

Mr Knuth is appalled that poor Government legislation can cause an established company to be in danger of closing its doors and has spoken to the Minister of Energy and the Minister of Environment, he is also lobbying for meetings with the relevant ministers over both issues.

“I put the Government on notice to fix the issues or risk losing an entire industry,” Mr Knuth said.

“I have listened to government members pat themselves on the back and bleat about creating 200,000 jobs in Queensland. Where are these jobs going?

“The reality is that regional Queensland is losing jobs faster

than they are being created because of poor government legislation.

“This is forcing small to medium sized businesses to close their doors, costing regional jobs. The state government continues to stick its head in the sand.

“We acknowledge the ministers are going to meet but we need both to play a role here.

There are 80 jobs directly affected with the Innisfail Foundry – but it’s the massive flow-on effect as a result of it closing down which will be devastating to the area and create a further impact on 700 jobs in Nth Qld. “At the end of the day we are talking about families, jobs, businesses and the livelihood of our region,” Mr Knuth said.

State Budget handed down A Labor handed down their State Budget last week, regional Queensland was at the forefront of their pitch.

However, questions have been raised as the legitimacy of the their supposed support as a number of key developments in regional Queensland were omitted from their funding commitments.

QUEENSLANDERS listened on intently as Labor Treasurer Jackie Trad (pictured) handed down the State Government’s 2019/20 Budget last Tuesday afternoon.

One of the key points to come out of the budget announcement was Labor’s assurances that they will deliver a surplus of $189 million in 2019/20.

And while a budget surplus is something the Palaszczuk Government can tick off as a win, they are sure to be bombarded with questions regarding the state’s ballooning debt which is scheduled to surpass $90 billion by 2023.

The debt forecast is not of concern to Ms Trad and the Labor Party.

“Our commitment to keep building job-generating infrastructure and capital projects will see our borrowing with Queensland Treasury Corporation remain at affordable levels – $72 billion in 2019-20,” she said.

“Mr Speaker, Queensland can afford this continued investment.

“The general government debt-to-revenue ratio is a key measure of our capacity to sustain our investment.

“The government’s careful management of borrowings means that this ratio will remain lower than any other major state except New South Wales. And it is only lower in NSW because they have chosen to privatise assets.”

Ms Trad said Queensland’s economy, and our budget, are strong.

“Counting the total value of everything we produce, Queensland is a $350 billion economy, three times what it was in 1990,” she said.

“And Queensland’s economic growth is forecast to strengthen next financial year to three per cent and then 2¾ per cent for the following three years.

“In fact, 2019-20 is expected to be the third year in a row that Queensland’s growth rate outperforms national growth.

“We will achieve surpluses in every year of the forward estimates period - and by 2021, for the first time, the state’s net worth will be more than $200 billion.”

Arguably the most telling commitment in the State Government’s Budget was their funding for regions, and given how poorly the Labor Party polled in seats across regional Queensland in the recent Federal Election, it may be Annastacia’s Palaszczuk’s best bet at re-election come 2020.

“A state that relies, more than any other, on the strength of its regional cities and towns, on the prosperity of its regional economies, and on the character and resilience of its regional communities,” she said.

“Mr Speaker, our regions define who we are as Queenslanders.

Ms Trad noted that when our regions do well, all of Queensland does well.

“And so in shaping this budget, it is regional Queenslanders who have been at the forefront of our thoughts,” she said.

“Mr Speaker, this is a budget for regional Queensland.

“Our tourism regions, our agricultural regions, and our coal and resource regions.”

Opposition Leader and Liberal National Party’s Deb Frecklington slated the budget, stating that it showed Queensland can’t afford Labor.

“After five years in power, all Labor is delivering is higher taxes, more debt, less jobs and less infrastructure,” Ms Frecklington said.

“New taxes, $90 billion of debt and almost 160,000 Queenslanders looking for work is the sum of five years of Annastacia Palaszczuk.”

Ms Frecklington was particularly critical of Labor’s policy on tax and their promises of job creation for regional Queensland.

“Labor is putting us further into debt to pay for their wasteful spending, such as changing hospital names and Al Gore lectures,” she said.

“Labor can’t manage money.

“Queensland has endured five years of Annastacia Palaszczuk and Jackie Trad but their legacy of tax and debt will last a lifetime.

“The debt bomb means billions of dollars will be unavailable in the future for natural disaster recovery or infrastructure projects, and there will be less money for nurses, teachers and police.”

Ms Frecklington said the other great lie of the budget is that it is for regional Queensland.

“The money Labor is actually spending on infrastructure is being funnelled into a handful of inner-Brisbane electorates for their pet project Cross River Rail,” she said.

“Labor is ignoring the infrastructure needs of regional Queensland.

“At the same time, Labor is holding the resources industry to ransom and holding back projects Central and North Queensland are relying on new jobs.

“The Palaszczuk Labor Government is anti-resources, antiregions and anti-jobs.”

With the Queensland Election not far away, Annastacia Palaszczuk will surely be feeling the pressure to deliver on the abundance of promises made in the State Budget to ensure she doesn’t suffer the same fate as Bill Shorten did in May.

ON Friday, June 7, Wing Commander (AAFC) Paul DeBoom (Officer Commanding 1 Wing, Australian Air Force Cadets) from RAAF Townsville made a special visit to 106 Squadron (Tablelands) at Mareeba to formalise the appointment of its Commanding Officer, Flight Lieutenant (AAFC) E. Hayton took over temporary command on April 1, 2017 and now has been formalised in front of the Squadron’s Cadets and parents in a parade.

The parade was slightly delayed due to wet weather before being moved indoors to complete the proceedings.

FLTLT (AAFC) Ed Hayton has been a stalwart at 106 Squadron for over 17 years.

Mr Hayton, who resides in Cairns, makes the journey up each week for all the Unit’s activities and training nights.

In addition, Wing Commander (AAFC) also took the opportunity to honour 106 Squadron’s senior cadet, Cadet Under Officer Alex Fogale with his Silver Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award is a leading youth development program, empowering young Australians aged 14-25 to explore their full potential, regardless of their background, location or circumstance.

Participants are required to complete four sections at each level: voluntary service, skill, physical recreation and adventurous journey. Gold level, participants also complete a Gold Residential Project.

At present, nearly 40,000 young Australians are undertaking the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award, including

a record 948 active participants across all three Award levels in the Australian Air Force Cadets.

And their involvement in the Australian Air Force Cadets can generate credits for the Year 12 Certificate of Education.

The positive impacts of the Award include achieving your personal best, learning to set goals and work towards them, learning to overcome challenges in reaching goals, becoming actively engaged with and making a difference in your local community, leading to more fulsome future life and career opportunities.

The Australian Air Force Cadets, (AAFC) has been licensed to operate the Award in Australia as a National Award Unit and is one of three licensed organisations.

Shire councillor to lead Rotary into new year MAREEBA Shire Councillor and long serving Rotarian, Lenore Wyatt, was officially inducted as the new President of Mareeba Rotary on Saturday night.

The annual Presidential Changeover dinner, held at the Mareeba Golf Club, was a night of celebrations with a German inspired theme in recognition to current Youth Exchange Student Philipp Walker.

The local service club farewelled outgoing president Margaret Schweiger and welcomed in 2019-20 president, Lenore and her board of directors.

Lenore’s association with Rotary began more than 30 years ago as a Rotary Exchange Student and since then she has been involved with the organisation in one way or another.

Charted in 1744, the Mareeba club is now in its 75th year and as President Lenore has a goal to celebrate this achievement in a show of respect for all the men and women that have achieved so much.

In her acceptance speech Lenore paid special mention

and thanks to the outgoing and incoming directors and finished by saying “Little was I to know that 30 years on I would achieve something my 15-year-old self would never have dreamt of, and that is to be the eighth ever female elected president of Mareeba Rotary, where my Service Above Self obsession all began.”

The celebrations and acknowledgments continued on the night with local doctor and true humanitarian, Dr Margaret Purcell named as Rotarian of the year, while Tammy Sivyer and Tanya Barker were recognised with a Paul Harris Fellow for their commitment and dedication to their community and professions.

Each year there is a international theme set with this year being “Rotary Connects the World”. 4. Pour butter mixture over shrimp in baking dish, season with salt and pepper and red pepper flakes, toss prawns and spread into an even layer.

5. Bake in preheated oven until prawns are cooked through (pink and opaque) about 9 - 13 minutes. Sprinkle with parsley and serve warm, spooning sauce over the prawns.

EXPRESS SPORT PORT MOPS to bolster rugby league in Mareeba PAST players, administrators and supporters of the Mareeba Gladiators who are over the age of 35 have the opportunity to become more involved with the club after the recent inception of the Mareeba Old Players, Administrators and Supporters (MOPS) group.

Currently sitting at roughly 50 members, MOPS are an incorporated body that encourages those involved to help bolster rugby league in the community.

MOPS has a four-person committee which consists of its President Rob Miller, Vice President Mick Cotter, Secretary Brendan Arcidiacono and Treasurer Dean Hastie.

President Rob Miller said a number of past players have spoken about starting up a group such as MOPS for quite some time.

“We were interested in MOPS as we have seen similar groups such as Old Boys Clubs be so successful,” he said.

“Whenever you see a strong Old Boys Club, you see a functioning rugby league club at both the junior and senior level.

“We decided to do it a little differently however, by going away from the traditional Old Boys Club model and encompassing supporters and administrators in conjunction with past players.

“So men and women over the age of 35 are encouraged to become members.”

Miller said not only will

MOPS help the Mareeba Gladiators; he noted that it also acts as a great social tool for members.

“It’s not solely about rugby league,” he said.

“It’s also about bringing people together and giving them the chance to socialise when they otherwise might not.

“There are plenty of older people who are interested in rugby league and have been part of it previously, yet they don’t know how to reconnect with it, and we figure this is the way.”

One of MOPS’s major objectives is to ensure greater continuity between the junior and senior rugby league factions of the Mareeba Gladiators club.

“We want rugby league to survive in Mareeba, so we’re

pushing for a greater connection between the juniors and seniors,” Miller said.

“So that’s something we’re really looking to achieve with MOPS moving forward and we strongly feel it will strengthen the sport in the community.”

MOPS have a number of upcoming functions throughout the remainder of the Cairns District Rugby League season, the first of which is on June 29 when the Mareeba Gladiators host the Atherton Roosters.

“We will also be hosting a function for our home game against Cairns Brothers on July 20, and that night will be our official launch,” Miller said.

“We will also be having a legends night in October,

where we will invite some past Queensland and New South Wales State of Origin players and host a fundraiser.”

Miller noted that he would like to thank Dimbulah community members for their interest and involvement in MOPS, particularly Eddie Toffanello of the Dimbulah Lions Club for his assistance.

For those interested in joining, it costs $5 to become a member.

Interested individuals are encouraged to attend the MOPS monthly meeting.

Local boys represent North Queensland

THREE local boys from the Mareeba Gladiators were selected in the North Queensland Marlin Junior Rugby League side.

Cain Hastie, Bryce Fincham and Sawyer Nehow were selected after they competed in the trials on June 1 and 2.

Bryce Fincham and Sawyer Nehow were selected for the U13 development squad, while Cain Hastie was selected to play in the North Queensland Championship in the U14 side.

On June 30 Cain will participate in a five day training camp prior to the North Queensland

Championships in Townsville held on 7-9 of June.

Local player Cain Hastie is both excited and nervous.

“It means a lot to me to be selected,” he said.

“I’ve been working along time to get to this stage. “I’m really looking forward to getting down there and playing with the boys.”

In preparation towards both the selection process and the games Cain said he’s been trying to “take care of himself.”

“Just not doing anything stupid like hurting myself,” he said.

A squad will be selected from the championship for a train-

ing camp to decide the players to represent Queensland in the State Championships.

Mareeba State High School student Natalie White in China.

Natalie wows at Pony Club exchange in China MAREEBA State High School student Natalie White recently returned from China on an exclusive cultural exchange.

The cultural exchange was run by Pony Club Australia in correlation with Pony Club China in an attempt to raise the popularity of equestrian sports in China.

Natalie was selected to go as a Mareeba and District Pony Club member based on her suitablilty. Natalie was the only person from Queensland chosen to attend the two week exchange, which hosted a variety of cultural experiences and teachings.

While in China, Natalie competed in equestrian sports such as; mounted games, horseback archery and show jumping.

Natalie won trophies for first place in both rounds of show jumping. Her mum Lyn White said “she struggled to put them in her suitcase without breaking them.”

“All the girls had a ball, they experienced the culture first hand. “There have only ever been three girls chosen for

this kind of exchange in North Queensland and they were all in the past six months.”

In her first week in China Natalia was living with a host family in Nanning who taught her their culture and practices.

After the competition the girls flew to the island of Hainan for the second week to the town of Haikou to help teach young local horse riders.

“They went over with two certified instructors and helped teach the young Chinese students,” Lyn said.

“The girls didn’t just experience horseback riding. “They were taught about tea ceremonies, cooking and even martial arts. “It is such a wonderful exchange and the girls learnt a lot.”

Natalie said it was “quite the experience.”

“It was very different from what we do here in Australia,” she said.

“I would definitely recommend this to other people. “It really helps you develop as a person.”

St Stephen’s into next round of Bill Turner school Cup THE annual Bill Turner Cup was played last Tuesday June 11 at Borzi Park Mareeba.

The 41-year-old competition pits schools against each other in soccer, with the winners of each round progressing to eventually reach the National level.

St Stephen’s Catholic College, the reigning champions, defeated Mareeba State High School 3-2 to book a place in the next round of the nationwide competition.

The St Stephen’s boys defeated their rivals in a close fought match with both sides being tied up at one apiece at halftime.

St Stephen’s were looking to control the second half pressing the MSHS players and keeping the ball alive in the final third of the park.

Luke Rantucci scored early

in the second half for SSCC but Surav Sapkota responded by bring the scores level again.

Some impressive goalkeeping by the MSHS goalie kept St Stephens at bay but with only five minutes remaining in the match St Stephens’s striker Luke Rantucci completed his hat trick by scoring the winner.

St Stephens Teacher and sport Co-ordinator Mr Kieran Morley was proud with both of his team’s efforts.

“Both the boys and the girls

teams upheld school values and played within the spirit of the game,” he said.

“St Stephens have been training hard and the students are as good as any team in the area.

“However knowing the quality of the opposition St Augustine’s cannot be underestimated.”

MSHS coach and Teacher Gary Davis was proud of his team’s effort.

“We’ve been preparing for quite a while,” he said.

“The boys felt they had a fair chance this year.

“There’s always been a good background in soccer up here.”

St Stephens will be looking to redeem themselves after losing in Brisbane last year.

They will heading to cairns on the June 28 to play against St Augustine’s College hoping to return to the quarter finals for another year.

Gladiators win two on the trot THE Mareeba Gladiators AGrade side built on their fine form they displayed against Tully and managed to topple competition heavyweights Kangaroos 18-12 at Davies Park on Saturday night.

While the Gladiators struggled with ball control throughout most of the game, their resolve defensively was to be admired.

On many occasions they were tasked with defending multiple

sets on their own line and their willingness to put their body on the line was what their coach Terry Aquilina commended the most.

“While we are having issues with regards to our errors, I am extremely pleased with the side’s resilience as a unit,” he said.

“We essentially had our full complement of players for the first time this season and I think a performance like tonight is

something we can build a foundation off the back of.

“What tonight showed is that this is a team worth getting behind, so hopefully the community can continue to come out and show their support.”

While there were a number of players returning from injury, there was no bigger inclusion for Saturday’s game than that of Mareeba centre and captain Trent Barnard.

Barnard’s ability to create something out of nothing proved the difference as he set his winger Josh Adu-Dwanna up for two tries.

Other notable performances on the night include the ever-reliable Ben Cocciolone and fiveeighth Jayden Edwards.

The Mareeba Gladiators host the Edmonton Storm at Davies Park this Saturday.

Third straight loss for Roosters Roosters Ned Blackman in the mix against Ivanhoes on Sunday.

The Atherton Roosters are now in danger of dropping out of the top five in the Cairns District Rugby League premiership race after going down 24-20 to Ivanhoes at Smithfield on Sunday afternoon.

It was the Roosters third straight loss and again the former high rollers were full of errors as they struggled to match

the home side. Ivanhoes crossed for the first try after six minutes of play and the Roosters reply came twenty minutes later through Graham Clark Jnr. After leading 8-6 at the break, Ivanhoes pushed ahead 14-6 soon after the restart before the Roosters hit back with another to trail 14-12.

The Roosters now looked to

be back in the hunt but another costly error allowed Ivanhoes in for their third try which pushed them out to a 20-12 lead. Prop James Coyle’s try soon after closed the gap to 20-18 with 18 minutes remaining.

However, tempers flared with both sides heavily involved in the resulting scuffle which then saw two players from each

side dismissed to the sinbin for ten minutes.

The Roosters were also awarded a penalty and wasted no time in kicking the extras to lock the score up at 20 all. The Roosters coughed the ball up soon after the restart and this put Ivanhoes in a perfect attacking position. Ivanhoes soon had the Roosters defence stretched before crossing for the winning four pointer.

In reserve grade, the Roosters now share top spot on the points table with Yarrabah after defeating Ivanhoes 28-10. Paul Nasser, Josiah Briggs, Brodie Martin, Kurt Siviyer and Anthony Anning all were the Roosters try scorers.

Atherton’s under 18 side were involved in a tight contest with Ivanhoes who took the points over the young Roosters 22-20. Tries for the Roosters were scored by Brody Gallagher, Keifhar Rosas, Justin Bevan and James Waters.

This Saturday the Atherton Roosters host the Tully Tigers at Atherton’s Mungalli Creek Dairy Stadium.

Bulls deliver good results across the board INNISFAIL Cutters put on a carnival atmosphere last Saturday as they played host to the Mareeba Bulls across both junior and senior divisions throughout the day.

In the Men’s Premier Division the home team took a share of the spoils after playing out a 3-all draw, a result that didn’t suit either club as they each try to claw their way towards the top

four.

Both teams played flowing football and from a spectators point of view was very entertaining with six goals spread evenly throughout the match.

The Bulls did have a successful day however as they won all of the other matches, most notably the 3-1 win by the reserves which see them maintain top spot on the ladder after round 11.

The premier ladies continued their good form with a thumping 5-0 win over the Cutters while the under eighteens racked up four goals to the Cutters one to seal a much needed win to keep them in touch with the competition leaders.

Last Friday night the Fillies played away to JCU and went down 4-2 but the Men’s second division collected all the

point winning 4-2. In the junior matches played on Saturday in Innisfail the under 13/14 all girls team won 8-2 , under 13/14 division 2 had a 4-0 win and the under 13/15 Division 1 won 3-1.

Not a bad day at the office for the Bulls, however this weekend the historic rivalry between the Bulls and the Stratford Dolphins will resume at Nick Brko field in all divisions.
