Paronella to lead the way: New Tablelands Regional Council Mayor Joe Paronella with wife Wendy on Sunday.
Gripping drama on Election Day By Justin Fris
DRAMA filled every inch of last weekend, as all Far North local government elections went down to the wire. Pre polling was extremely popular across both the Mareeba Shire and Tablelands Regional Council regions, with officials commenting that numbers were up on previous elections. Mareeba Shire Council (MSC) voters didn’t
have to worry about casting a vote for a new Mayor – as incumbent Tom Gilmore was reelected unopposed. Councillor positions were confirmed on Sunday afternoon, with three fresh faces – Angela Toppin, Kevin Davies and Lenore Wyatt – elected. Mrs Toppin, Mr Davies and Ms Wyatt will bejoined by current MSC councillors Nipper Brown (6,993 votes), Mary Graham (6,913 votes) and

Alan Pedersen (6,560 votes), who were all easily re-elected. Ms Wyatt had the toughest battle in the MSC councillor race, holding off a valiant effort from Grace Armenti. It was also a very significant moment down the Kennedy Highway in the Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) jurisdiction, with Joe Paronella (5,685 votes, with over half of the vote counted) also claiming victory as Mayor on Sunday, af-

Easter festivities set to shine brightly in Kuranda By Justin Fris
FAMILIES are encouraged to flock to the village this Saturday (Easter Saturday) to enjoy a full day of free Easter celebrations at Centenary Park in Kuranda. The centrepiece of this special day is the highly anticipated 14,000 Easter Egg drop – which will be held at four separate times during the day. A crane is hoisted high into the air – with Easter eggs ‘raining’ from the sky – much to the delight of the crowd. Tourism Kuranda executive officer Marc Sleeman said the event is one of the biggest of the year in Kuranda. “The Easter celebrations have become one of the biggest events on the calendar,” he said. “We get a really good crowd each year – ranging from Port Douglas in the north, down to Innis-
fail in the south. “It’s a really good time to hold an event such as this at this time of year, as it’s a bit quiet – and its the start of the school holidays.” Additionally, Mr Sleeman coordinates several inclusive Easter games for the children in attendance and said it was a great opportunity for Kuranda locals to get involved. “It’s always very rewarding to see smiles on everybody’s face,” he said. “It’s a full free day of fun for families, which is always welcome given the current economic climate. Mr Sleeman added: “You also get a sense that local kids are quite proud of the event. They have a great sense of pride welcoming visitors into the village.” Those attending the celebrations are encouraged to utilise parking facilities on the outskirts of the village, as there are enough bays to cater for the crowd. The event runs from 10am to 4pm.

STUDENTS at Mareeba State High School (MSHS) have pledged to eliminate bullying within their school’s community. In line with nationwide commemorations marking ‘Bullying, No Way’ Day last Friday, students created their own personal ‘pledge’ during classes. Each personal pledge contained the student’s personal beliefs regarding bullying and what steps they would take to eliminate it. Pledges were then collected and joined to form several chains, which were hoisted up around several buildings. MSHS Principal Scott Whybird – who has made great strides in reducing bullying at the school – encouraged students to unite against bullying. “As students of our school, putting these pledges together to cut out bullying is very important,” he told the students. “I say – bullying? No way! It’s really important to us. We need to make sure we have got that commitment. “These pledges are recognition of this commitment and they will be displayed for everyone to see. We need to do all things we can do to get bullying out of our school.”

FROM PAGE 1 “I never expected it would turn out like this. I’m very proud of the campaign that we ran and I’m very thankful for everyone who believed in me. “I’m ready to give it a go.” In a statement to ratepayers, Mr Marti was magnanimous in defeat and wished all councillors well for the future. “It’s been a very long campaign and I haven’t made it,” he said. “It has been disappointing, but I’d like to thank all of those who have supported me during the campaign and at the ballot box because they believed in me. “Earlier today, I called Joe Paronella to congratulate him and to wish him and all the councillors the very best for the future. “I’d also like to thank the residents of Division 4, whom I have worked with over the past four years. It has been a pleasure to be their councillor and a privilege to have served as a custodian of Council and the community during that time.” The other two TRC mayoral candidates, Peter Hodge (1,108 votes) and Paul Kneubuhler (279 votes) were eliminated from the mayoral race early on Saturday night. Queensland votes ‘Yes’ to 4 year terms for state politicians QUEENSLAND voters have voted ‘Yes’ in adopting fixed four year terms of government for state politicians, in last Saturday’s state referendum. Despite controversy routinely plaguing current and recent governments, voters believe fixed four year terms will offer certainty and stability. Current sitting members of parliament won’t be complaining either, as this decision guarantees another year in office with a big salary. As of 5pm Sunday afternoon, (our print deadline) the ‘Yes’ preference had clocked up 774, 927 votes (53.16 per cent) – compared with 682,836 ‘No’
votes (46.84 per cent) with 48.91 per cent of the vote counted. In the Cook electorate, the ‘Yes’ vote was resoundly endorsed (9,730 for, 6,337 against). It was an entirely different story in Dalrymple, with the ‘No’ vote a resounding winner (10,730 against, 8,743 for). Member for Dalrymple Shane Knuth was staunchly against fixed four year terms. The ‘Yes’ vote also was victorious in the electorates of Barron River and Cairns, along with many city-based electorates across the state.

One on one with retiring Mareeba Shire councillor Jenny Jensen Why have you decided to retire? On a personal level, this is the right time for me to move on. I am someone who thrives on finding new and different pathways in life. Who knows what lies ahead. On a professional level, it is really important that any group or organisation continually grows and changes. We need a good mix of experience and new blood. Sometimes, the “long term” needs to step aside for the “new kid on the block”. What has been your most satisfying moment in local government? It is immensely satisfying to see people and communities succeed. I have witnessed many great “council achievements”, but the greatest satisfaction as a councillor has been to play my small part in helping ordinary people in our community to work with Council to have their needs addressed and understood. What have been some of the biggest challenges during your career? Above all else, I have always found the “politics” of local government somewhat of a “challenge”. I am a straightforward, up front sort of person who just likes to see things happen. I have never liked the “political games” that are sometimes played and firmly believe that the open and honest approach is the best course to follow.
What have been some of the lighter moments during your time as a councillor? I think it is important that as a councillor we are always in the public eye in whatever we do. This doesn't mean that councillor life is always serious and there have also been lots of fun times. I have really enjoyed the camaraderie of having a laugh with a staff member, celebrating with a community (never thought I would dress up as an Easter Bunny), bantering with a fellow councillor and slipping and sliding on a wet road in the backblocks. What is your stance on the future of the region? (for example, unemployment, roads and tourism) The region is headed for a bright future. The groundwork is being put in place for a solid progressive region – but the groundwork is also in place for a region that protects its natural environment, its assets and its history. Who is Jenny Jensen outside of Council? (Favourite interests, hobbies) Not much to tell here. I am usually working or at home. I like the solitude of a quiet home and pottering in my garden, I love to travel to immerse myself in other cultures. But number one – by a mile – is my son and my family. They are my rock.

CLEALL’S
Social media poll provides accurate snapshot BUTCHERY PRIOR to last Saturday’s election, The Express Newspaper decided to conduct a Mareeba Shire councillor preference pre-poll on our Facebook page. The poll was designed to canvass the mood of the MSC ratepayers to see who their preferred councillor was. Additionally, we were keen to see if the poll results would mirror the eventual results. Naturally, not all of our readership is on Facebook, but it was intriguing over several weeks to see how the poll ebbed and flowed. The results of the poll were top
secret – for a number of reasons. Not only did we not wish to upset any candidate at the foot of the poll, we believe in democracy and didn’t want to influence voters or voting trends in any way. In the end, it turned out to be a pretty good formguide, with the nature of the vote extremely tight. Angela Toppin, Mary Graham, Alan Pedersen and Lenore Wyatt topped the poll equally on 13 per cent. Nipper Brown was within striking distance on 12 per cent – and by our print deadline, was leading the overall primary vote,
with 6,995 votes. It was predicted that several of the current councillors would do well – which eventually came to fruition. Liked by many in the community, Mary Graham (with 6,915 votes) followed Brown’s lead and finished in the top three. A real surprise packet was Kevin Davies, who was a part of the Mareeba Shire First team. Mr Davies polled 6,460 votes, which had him on level pegging with independent candidate, Angela Toppin. The only real discrepancy with
the results was the close battle for the 6th and final councillor spot. Wyatt eventually would claim victory (5,187 votes), however she was given an almighty fright from fellow independent candidate, Grace Armenti. Armenti was a relatively late nomination into the race, however she gave an excellent account of herself. The weekend would have a sour point for members of the Mareeba Shire First team, with Allan Holmes and Karen Ewin unsuccessful in their bid for a second term in office.

Paronella and Marti race eventuates on Election Day IN addition to our MSC councillor preference poll, The Express Newspaper was keen to canvass Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) ratepayers for their preferred mayoral candidate. Such has been the nature of the last two years, the selection clearly had many in the community divided. Naturally, not all of our readership is on Facebook – and with an ageing population across the Southern Tablelands, we are well aware some readers may not have been able to vote in the poll. The results of the poll were top secret (as with our MSC poll). With all mayoral candidates taking on a monumental commitment campaigning, we felt it wouldn’t be fair to splash pre poll results in the lead up to the election. All four men ran each of their cam-
paigns to the best of their ability. Initially when the poll opened, Mr Paronella burst out to an early lead (53 per cent to 38 per cent) over Mr Marti. However the final few days provided more twists and turns than a rollercoaster, with Mr Marti taking the lead and holding on until the poll closed at Noon, last Friday. Both Mr Paronella and Mr Marti were active on social media throughout their campaign, along with attending several public events. The amounts polled by Mr Hodge (6 per cent) and Mr Kneubuhler (2 per cent) virtually mirrored their voting percentages on Election Day. Mr Paronella has a big job ahead of him as Mayor, as he needs to rebuild a region desperately low on confidence.

Call for nominations for the Multicultural Queensland Advisory Council.
ONE of the most tumultuous chapters of Tablelands local government history came to a close last Thursday morning. Mayor Rosa Lee Long’s led Council has polarised the community across the board – with disharmony amongst councillors continually simmering on display. Last Thursday, silence at times was palpable as items were steadily wheeled out before the gallery, before routine spot fires flared up from time to time across the table. A casting vote would be used four times throughout the meeting, with the same three councillors
The Queensland Government is seeking nominations from people across the state to join the Multicultural Queensland Advisory Council. The new council will be established under the Multicultural Recognition Act 2016 to provide advice to government on the opportunities and barriers facing Queenslanders from diverse backgrounds, and how to promote the Multicultural Queensland Charter to support a unified, harmonious and inclusive community. The council will be chaired by the Minister for Multicultural Affairs.
Nominations close 5pm 29 March 2016.

Nominees from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds and from regional and rural areas are encouraged to apply, as are representatives of the business and corporate, community and education sectors. For information on how to submit a nomination form, including addressing the selection criteria, visit www.communities.qld.gov.au or email maqsecretariat@communities.qld.gov.au.

(Mayor Lee Long, Cr Geoff Stocker and Cr Peter Hodge) utilising its advantage every time. A total of 15 general agenda items were initially presented for debate, however the majority of the controversial matters were either deferred or withdrawn. Many ratepayers were left shaking their heads at the constant use of the casting vote, but were optimistic that the dark cloud of disharmony may soon become a distant memory. Trevor Sorenson – a revered member of the Southern Tablelands community – was one of many ratepayers who attended the meeting and believed it turned into a real ‘sham’.

Far North MP’s unite against Palaszczuk’s ‘early election’ calls
Independents Rob Pyne, Robbie Katter and Shane Knuth outside parliament last week. By Justin Fris
STATE independent crossbenchers Rob Pyne, Robbie Katter, Shane Knuth and Billy Gordon want Premier Palaszczuk to get down to business and govern. Several contentious issues put forward by the Palaszczuk Government have garnered little support recently, which led the Premier to comment that she may call an early election to split the current political deadlock (both ALP and LNP currently have 42 seats). These remarks were jumped on quickly by the crossbenchers, who said they would have no hesitation shifting their support with the LNP if the Premier called an early election. This would result in the LNP acquiring the magical number of 45 seats – allowing them to form government. Member for Dalrymple Shane Knuth said: “We will be providing the Governor General of Qld with a letter; and the Governor General will
Mareeba Shire councillors after their final meeting last week, with CEO Peter Franks and Mayor Tom Gilmore.
Emotive scene at final MSC meeting OPINION PIECE By Carl Portella
Mareeba Shire Council conducted its final meeting with the current crop of councillors last Wednesday, two days before last Saturday’s election. Each of the sitting councillors wished retiring councillor Jenny Jensen the very best for her future endeavours and offered messages of praise and satisfaction to each other for coming through the last two years with excellent marks on their report card. An emotional Mayor Tom Gilmore thanked his troops for a tremendous two years which, under his leadership, were able to prove the pundits wrong. This fledgling council took over after the Shire voted to de-amalgamate from the Tablelands Regional Council under claims that the organisation would fail miserably. This statement was made by both the remaining TRC and the State Government authorities; and how wrong they were. The Shire and all its residents need to thank Mick Borzi – the man who was the driving force behind the
push to de-amalgamate. Without his resilience and passion for the Shire he lead for a very long time, none of this would have been possible and the Shire would not be in the position is it is today. We should all equally thank Tom Gilmore and the new council, who came together as one to forge a new Mareeba Shire Council and prepare the platform that would propel the Shire into the future. Difficult decisions had to be made on rates, the waste water treatment plant, roads, recycling and many others important issues. Each of the councillors should take pride that all of this excellent work was done while they were in the hot seat. But with new elections come change – new faces, new ideas, new opportunities and those that are re-elected need to embrace the change and move forward like the first time. The cycle continues with Mayor Gilmore at the helm, new faces in council and with a platform that will see the Mareeba Shire rise above its recent past to create a better place for our children to live.

have the understanding that if the Premier decides to go and call an early election, this letter provides another avenue for the Governor.” Independent Member for Cairns Rob Pyne added: “The belief of doing this will not result in that eventuality. And in doing so, sending a strong message to the Premier – so she can continue to govern and not rush off to an early election.” In an interview with ABC Radio in Brisbane, Member for Mt Isa Robbie Katter said the crossbenchers had pure intentions – they simply want to help the bush and the state prosper. “It wouldn’t be wise or responsible for us to go into parliament and constantly being trying to tear the walls down,” he said. “But at the same time, the government needs to realise that they don’t govern with a majority of 20 – and I think that is a healthy thing for Qld. “We don’t have an Upper House and you’ve got some adversarial circuit breakers in there – so we’re forcing the government to consult.”

Turnbull Government plans review of ‘Backpacker Tax’ THE Turnbull Government has revealed that it is planning to commence a review into the so called ‘Backpacker Tax’. After being flagged by the Member for Leichhardt Warren Entsch, the matter has been discussed at length in parliament – with the Turnbull Government committing to a review of the policy. Under the proposed legislation, backpackers would be required to pay 32 cents in tax for every dollar that they earn. Mr Entsch welcomed the announcement and said: “I was one of a number of MPs who spoke up at a Party Room meeting three weeks ago and expressed concerns that there could be unintended consequences as a result of introducing this tax,” Mr Entsch said. “Feedback from our local agriculture and tourism industries especially has been that working holidaymakers are vital to these growth sectors.
Atherton Supa IGA does it again
“I understand that in the tourism industry alone, Australia is facing a shortage of 127,000 workers in the next five years. Most of these will come from Australia, but about 10 per cent will need to come from overseas. “The horticulture, abattoir and general agriculture sectors also rely heavily on the backpacker workforce.” Mareeba District Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association president Joe Moro said local growers were happy that the matter was being reviewed. “We are very happy that the government have been listening to the needs of growers,” he said. “Having said that, we still need to see where the review will lead. “We hope that all parties can continue to work together to achieve a satisfactory result.”
ATHERTON Supa IGA have continued their successful reign under Mike Shakes, after securing further recognition for their excellent store. The Silo Road Shopping Centre based store were acknowledged at their recent state conference in Japan. Along with receiving state department awards for fruit/ veg and meat, the store was also crowned ‘Qld Store of the Year’ In a statement, Mr Shakes said: “We would like to thank all of our amazing staff for all the hard work and dedication that has been put in the last 12 months and to all our customers we wouldn't be here if it wasn't for you.”
Talk to the experts and don’t pay exorbitant fees ARE you unable to work due to a disability? Are you unsure about how to proceed with accessing total and permanent disablement benefits? If you answered yes to one or more of the above, do yourself a favour and book an appointment with local financial advisor, Ross Cardillo, at Ross Cardillo Financial Services (186 Byrnes Street, Mareeba, Ph: 4092 4129). Cardillo has been in the finance industry since 1988 and puts his clients’ needs first. “In the past few years, it has become more and more evident that insurers are making it more and more difficult for people to access total and permanent disablement insurance benefits,” he said. “With total and disablement insurance benefits, there are basically two definitions – an ‘own’ occupation definition and an ‘any’ occupation definition. “Meaning that, if you are deemed to be totally disabled (if you are unable to perform your own occupation), unfortunately this definition is no longer available for superannuation funds due to government legislation. “The definition of total impairment disablement inside superannuation can only now be that of ‘any’ occupation
– so you are deemed to be disabled if you are unable to perform any occupation for which you are deemed ‘suitable’ by training, education or experience. “This definition is very broad – and it makes it very easy for insurance companies to avoid payment to their members.” Mr Cardillo recounted numerous examples of clients who had made appointments after originally being referred to solicitors by accountants. “What I’m experiencing now (particularly in the last two to three years) is people are being referred to me, after having had issues with trying to claim insurance benefits. And as I’ve been in the industry for over 30 years (and understanding the various policies), I understand them better than many employed by the major insurers – through experience. “I’m able to have these payments made. I can give you countless examples where we have had people referred to us for assistance and we’ve had cases overturned in the member’s favour – because I understand contracts and I understand what needs to be done to have them paid.
TOTAL &
Mr Cardillo added: “I have recently come across a person who had been referred to me. He initially saw his accountant, who referred him to a legal firm. “The legal firm were going to charge him between a minimum of 40 per cent to a maximum of 70 per cent of whatever funds they were able to attain for him (through a total disablement claim) through his insurer’s superannuation fund. “Fortunately, the client was able to cancel the arrangements he had made and not proceed with the legal firm he was discussing the matter with. “We were able to achieve an excellent result, having all the money paid to him – due to total impairment disablement. “Because he saw me, he avoided at a bare minimum a 40 per cent fee. We are talking about an individual who is unable to work – totally and permanently disabled. “Yet the solicitor sees it fit to charge the individual $40,000 in fees as a minimum, for every $100,000 that the client achieves.”

Organisers are excited about the 100th instalment of the Malanda Show in July. ABOVE: Malanda Show today and inset Malanda Show in 1932.
Anticipation aplenty for 100th Malanda Show By Justin Fris
A country show that prides itself on tradition and family is turning 100 this year and they’d love nothing better than you coming along to celebrate between July 8 and 10. Folks travel from all over to visit the Malanda Show each year, in what is a friendly, family environment. Malanda Show Society secretary Carl Grandelis – who has been passionately involved with the show for several years – said many were drawn to the event due to its commitment to upholding tradition. “We stick to the original concepts of an agricultural society show,” he said. “We are a family agricultural show, with a few rides for the kids. “We’ve always focused heavily on the quality of the agricultural exhibits.” Mr Grandelis said there would naturally be a strong focus on dairy this year, along with a special dairy cattle auction. “This year we have also brought back the ‘Malanda Show Queens’,” he said.
“There will be a street parade on the Friday night, where the Queens will be presented to the crowd. “Another exciting event will be the ‘Show Ball’ which will be held on June 25. The theme for the ball is ‘periodic’ costumes – so it will be great to see a range of different outfits.” Roughly 8000 people attend the show annually. Along with the positive atmosphere, show staff have worked diligently to keep admission prices at a reasonable level. “One of my favourite moments is at the end, when you see people heading home with smiles on their faces telling us that they had a good time,” Mr Grandelis said. The Malanda Show Society is also keen to speak with anyone who may have old Malanda Show memorabilia, or individuals who would have been involved with the Malanda Show over several decades. For more information, please call Mr Grandelis on 4096 5349.
SEVERAL farmers and landowners across the Cook electorate are seething, after local member Billy Gordon initially sided with the Palaszczuk Government on the contentious vegetation management Bill (Vegetation Management (Reinstatement) and Other Legislation Amendment Bill 2016) last Thursday night. Despite attending an AGFORCE meeting in Mareeba a fortnight ago and appearing to acknowledge concerns of local farmers, Mr Gordon’s crucial vote went in favour of what those in Brisbane wanted – instead of the overwhelming majority of his electorate. Independent Member for Cairns Rob Pyne also voted for the Bill, while it was opposed by both KAP crossbenchers and the LNP. In a nutshell, the decision means that landowners will have hefty restrictions on how they can develop and manage land clearing on their property, with tree clearing effectively grinding to a halt. The Bill has been fast tracked (in terms of priority) for committee discussion; however opponents said they would continue to lobby against it. In his speech during parliament, Mr Knuth said: “This is a bad day and a bad Bill. It is disappointing that a motion has been moved in this House to fasttrack this bad bill through the committee system. “I oppose the motion to fast-track the referral of the bill. I support the amendment to the motion, moved by the opposition, to change the reporting date to 30 June.” Mr Knuth added: “This issue has been going on since time began. Vegetation management is a political football that has been bouncing backwards and
forwards. Landowners want certainty. They are sick and tired of this political football. “The Bligh government was booted out because of two reasons: its asset sales agenda and its attack on landowners.” The LNP also voiced their displeasure. Shadow Minister for Natural Resources and Mines Andrew Cripps said: “Category R vegetation management restrictions are proposed to be extended into the eastern Cape York Peninsula, Fitzroy and Burnett/Mary regions, impacting on thousands of rural landholders for the first time," he said. “Labor's Bill throws out the critically important High Value Agriculture and High Value Irrigated Agriculture pathways for the sustainable expansion of Queensland's agriculture sector, bringing future growth in rural Queensland to a screaming halt. “Freehold landholders will lose the ability to manage their regrowth vegetation, while severe breaches of civil liberties make an inglorious return, including the re-instatement of reversal of the onus of proof – meaning farmers will again be considered guilty until proven innocent.” Mareeba District Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association president Joe Moro said local graziers were left disappointed by the decision. “It’s (the decision) definitely a step back for the farmers,” he said. “It’s disappointing that our local member didn’t support our choices, however he is entitled to vote however he likes.” Social media went into overdrive after the vote was announced, with farmers talking about heading to the next sitting of parliament in Brisbane to voice their concerns on the decision.

‘The job no one wants’ Police officers are human like all of us, but it takes courage to walk up to the home of someone they don’t know to inform the parents that their child won’t be coming home. The following story is typical of what goes through the mind of an officer. “Walking up the driveway, my legs feel as if they are made of lead. I’d give anything to be able to turn around. To not do this. But it’s my job. My heart sinks as I think about what I’m about to do and there is a knot in the pit of my stomach that just won’t go away. My mouth has suddenly gone dry and I hope that my voice won’t fail me. “I take several deep breaths as I steady myself and prepare to knock on the door. One thought sticks out in my mind: “I’m so sorry - I have to tell you this”. And I repeat it over and over again. I know how I feel is irrelevant, as I’m about to say the words that no one deserves to hear, and that everyone fears. I knock with hands that aren’t quiet steady, and wait.” With a quarter of the year nearly over, and the Easter school holidays just around the corner, Queensland police are urging motorists to take a long hard look at their driving behaviour. Tragically 49 people have lost their lives on Queensland roads during the first two and a half months of 2016. With this year’s road toll already 10 more than the same time last year, Assistant Commissioner Mike Keating of the Road Policing Command said safer driving habits will make a significant difference to road safety, and the road toll. “Eve-
ry person lost on a Queensland road is a tragedy of unimaginable proportions. Changing driver behaviour and habits can and does make a difference. “We know that speeding kills, drink and drug driving kills, not wearing seatbelts or driving while fatigued or distracted kills. “These are not new phenomena. We know that these are the ‘Fatal Five’ causes of fatal and serious road crashes, and yet, everyday across Queensland drivers are willing to risk their lives, your life, and that of your family. “We have sadly lost 49 people in just less than three months. Drivers need to stop and take a long hard look at their driving behaviour. “You know who you are. You know if you speed, or drink or take drugs before getting behind the wheel. You know if you take short cuts and drive too aggressively. You know if your driving behaviour is risky, and you need to stop. “We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again because it’s true. The most dangerous thing that any of us is likely to do in our lifetime is get be-

hind the wheel and drive. Each and every time you drive you potentially have a deadly weapon in your hands. “I’m urging every motorist to think about their driving habits and behaviour. Take note of the ‘Fatal Five’ and eliminate them from your driving. It’ll make for a safer drive
for everyone,” Assistant Commissioner Keating said. For more information and fact sheets on the ‘Fatal Five’ visit our website at https://www. police.qld.gov.au/EventsandAlerts/campaigns/ fatalfive.htm

YEAR 9
YEAR 9
The first 9 weeks of 2016 has started with a rush. Schools are such a dynamic place in today’s society with the focus well and truly on the success of our students. The opportunities for involvement in our Mareeba community are fantastic. I would like to thank our community for the great support given to students in 2016. The focus on community is one of the three priority areas for us in 2016. A reminder that Mareeba State High School is using ACT as our focus for improvement. Achievement in the area of Reading will be the main target for all students at our school. Community will have a focus on School Wide Positive Behaviours Support which will have input from parents, students and staff. In addition, attendance is also a priority along with the work we are doing with the whole community around engagement. Teaching is the last focus, Quality teaching will continue to be supported at our school. Some data to assist our school in getting the best achievement for our students is around our attendance. As a parent group, it is vital that students attend school. The data for term 1 shows an overall attendance of 85.9% (an increase of nearly 1% over 2015) with our year 7’s leading the way with 88.3%. Our target is 89.7%, the target set by the State. Currently we have 63.5% of all our students attending for greater than 90% for term 1. This is an increase of 12% from 2015. We need to celebrate this figure and encourage all of our students to attend at these great levels. Have a happy and safe Easter vacation. We look forward to having an even better 11 week Term 2. Scott Whybird, Principal
The year 8 cohort have excitedly engaged in the new school year. A couple of the things they have been excited about so far this year is participating in the new subjects they chosen and coming along to the year 8 movie night in week 6. Leigh Gargan – Media Teacher and Year 8 Co-ordinator
The Year 9’s have been off to a great start this year, being the seniors of the Junior School. On Thursday March 10, thirty students went to Cairns Central and Event Cinemas to see Gods of Egypt. All represented the school to a high standard and had an awesome time, with one student saying it was, “the best movie I have seen so far this year.” Brett Hamilton – Geography and History Teacher and Year 9 Co-ordinator
YEAR 10 A huge thank you to past student and Northern Pride player Ian King who came and ran a session with the year 8 rugby league class Thursday March 3. It was great for the students to hear from a young community role model on pathways in rugby league during and after school. The students had a great time showing Ian their skills and we hope to see him again soon Samantha Elshaw – HPETeacher and Year 10 Co-ordinator
YEAR 11 This year a number of Year 11 students have begun courses at the Trade Training Centre. These courses prepare students for the workforce and give them a valuable head start with traineeships and apprenticeships. Students are learning many new and relevant industry skills and are required to be organised with the correct uniform and safety gear. Respect for the regulations, equipment and procedures is in line with the industry expectations.
Next week 60 students will be participating in the Rotary Youth Driver Awareness Safety Education Program. The RYDA program is a road safety education course aimed at equipping young people with the knowledge to stay safe on Australian roads. It was developed in consultation with road safety authorise, relevant government departments and the police and is designed to complement the school curriculum and government road safety messages. Following his titanic struggle against General Zod, Metropolis has been razed to the ground and Superman is the most controversial figure in the world. Pyne continues to push Palaszczuk Government on council misconduct The latest round of allegations touched on a variety of subjects, including mayoral gifts, conflicts of interests, campaign donations and wind farm noncompliance. It was a busy week for Mr Pyne, who used his first speech as an independent state member to highlight his disgust at those who had abused him since he resigned from ALP. “Those most outraged by my decision have been those for whom party politics is little more than a partisan game, based on Neanderthal tribalism, and those for whom the Labor party is not a matter of Member of Cairns Rob Pyne discusses the documents with TRC ratepayers Lyn O’Conner and Jason Ward. conviction, but a vehicle for career advancement,” he said. Know the road rules The State’s peak motoring body has warned drivers not to get complacent about the road rules, as it released five of the more obscure laws Queenslanders have been fined for breaking. Data obtained by RACQ highlighted the number of motorists fined over these traffic infringements. RACQ spokesperson Lauren Ritchie said it was a timely reminder to motorists who mistakenly believed police didn’t monitor minor breaches of the law. “It’s of huge concern to see more than 130 people have been fined for using a mobile phone while riding a bicycle – this is unsafe and goes against all common sense,” Ms Ritchie said. “Another shocking find is motorists preventing emergency services from getting to their destination. “It’s a credit to police that they’re actively monitoring and enforcing these breaches.” Ms Ritchie said ignorance of the road rules was not a valid excuse. “The road rules are designed to keep all road users safe and if people begin to pick and choose the laws they follow, we’ll have chaos on the roads,” she said. “The legislation has likely changed slightly since most peo-
ple sat their driving exam, so staying across new laws is vital.”
The five random road rules motorists were fined for breaking January to October 2015: • Using front or rear fog lights during clear weather – 344 fines. • Cyclist using a mobile phone while riding – 136 people fined. • Learner under the direction of a person not seated beside the driver – 97 fines. • Failing to give way/ moving into the path of emergency vehicles – 45 people fines. • Driving with tv/display screen in view of the driver or likely to distract other drivers – 24 fines.

Energy Minister Mark Bailey hosted the Palaszczuk Government’s Petrol Price Summit, bringing together industry representatives as well as consumer and motoring groups. “Officers from the ACCC presented the report of their study on the Darwin petrol market, and also provided an update on similar reviews underway in Armidale and Launceston,” he said. “I want the ACCC to now launch a study into the Queensland market as soon as possible. I initially requested this when I wrote to ACCC Chairman Rod Sims earlier this year, and after today’s meeting I’m convinced this is the next step. “The ACCC has the tools and the expertise, such as their compulsory information gathering powers, to bring real scrutiny to bear on the Queensland market and shine a light on what are higher margins than other states. “The Federal Government must allocate the resources needed by the ACCC to do their job in Queensland, just like they did in the Northern Ter-
ritory and are doing in New South Wales and Tasmania.” Mr Bailey said the ACCC’s quarterly report into Australian petrol prices released in February confirmed that Queenslanders were paying more for fuel. “Not only did it show that Brisbane has had consistently higher prices than other capital cities, it also found that regional areas have been slow to decrease their petrol prices,” he said. “Regardless of where you live in Queensland, the chances are – the last fortnight excluded – you haven’t been getting the full benefit of the lowest international oil prices we’ve seen in ten years.” Mr Bailey said several participants had also raised the issue of signage outside petrol stations. “The summit was clear that we need to ensure motorists have accurate point of sale information, but that any new requirements for service stations are not onerous on operators which could then drive petrol prices up. “We’ll be consulting further to look at any measures we can take at a state level to promote more discounting and lower prices for consumers.”

Glaze: 1 cup Powdered Sugar 3 tablespoons Lemon Juice, fresh
1. Combine the flour, sugar and lemon zest. Add the chilled butter and cut the butter into the flour mixture using a pastry cutter until the mixture looks like coarse crumbs. Add in the egg yolk and stir until blended. Gently knead the dough until it comes together and forms a ball. 2. Once the dough has been formed into a ball, cut the dough in half and roll each half into a log about 1-inch in diameter. Wrap the logs in plastic wrap and allow them to chill in the freezer for 30 minutes. 3. Remove the logs from the freezer, unwrap and slice into 1/4-inch think rounds using a knife. Place the cookies on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and back for 10-12 minutes. Transfer the cookies to a wire rack and allow them to completely cool before glazing them.

If you are thinking about building a new home and contemplating which builder to use, please inspect this brand new display home at Amaroo Park Estate. Compare the quality and finish of this house with others on the market. DM & JA Construction Pty Ltd are not project builders with dozens of plans to choose from. We believe your home is one of the biggest investments, you will make and most likely spend most of your time in – so it should be your own personal choice. As your home is a major investment, you should be completely aware of what you are getting for your money. All new homes look good when they are first built. But, you may live in that home for many years to come and therefore the time you spend on planning and understanding what you are getting beforehand is very important. We would like the opportunity to sit down and discuss all aspects of building your own personal new house. We are local builders and use local trades people and buy building materials, where ever possible. You will be able to sit down with a draftsman and design your own home and we can also help to arrange finance. If you are building an investment home, we can help with advice on which type of house is suitable as a rental property. There are horses for causes and not all houses are suitable as rentals. This home is located 14 Karobean Drive in Amaroo and is open for inspection every Saturday from 12-2pm. Contact Joe Torrisi on 0417 700 468, or anytime during the week by phoning the builder direct on 0439 172 891.

PROPERTY Low maintenance home in Ravenshoe
Privacy and views at Tinaroo
If you want room to move, no neighbours in sight and a very low maintenance colour bond, two bedroom home – this could be for you. Located in the middle of a 1ha (2.4acres) block, surrounded by mature trees and greenery, is the ideal one to two person house. If housework isn’t your thing, you will appreciate the more compact design. Built up off the ground for coolness, insulated roof, shaded by tall trees, it’s a great way to escape the summer heat. There is also a reverse cycle air conditioner for quick results in either season. One of the living areas has a wood burning stove for the cooler winter nights and this will adequately heat the whole house. A lovely feature of this property is the outdoor entertaining area. It’s like a sec-
ond outdoor kitchen and roomy enough to seat 8. It’s a great meeting place, bbq venue and party hub. There’s a double lock up shed/garage, numerous other sheds/2 containers and out buildings, a small fenced paddock and an enviable organic vegetable garden. The whole hectare is fenced and once you have closed the gate it really is a world of your own. It’s also manageable if you want to lock up and travel. Being just 11kms out of town you have the luxury of town water, plus three rain water tanks. Contact Karen Ranie at Area Real Estate for more information and an inspection. Phone 0458 408 540 or email karen@arearealestate. com.au.
This is a special “one of house” – built to make the very best of fantastic views. Amazing attention to detail when the house was planned ensured the view was displayed to the best advantage and the owners had maximum privacy. Everything revolves around the most popular living area – the verandah. It’s 18m long with an outdoor fireplace for the chillier nights and this is where you enjoy hours of relaxation or the envy of your friends when you invite them around – this is special scenery. Whatever could be done to keep maintenance to a minimum has been done, it’s a remarkably comfortable house but the stun-
ner is the privacy and views. This isn’t a “drive by “ house, you can’t see it from the road and the land and lake access needs to be viewed . Fenced all round with mature trees and nothing to interrupt a stunning panorama. Featuring three bedrooms, three bathrooms, study, two living areas, party area, 200m2 fivebay shed It’s got everything including value for money price of $950,000 negotiable. Contact Karen Ranie at Area Real Estate for more information and an inspection. Phone 0458 408 540 or email karen@ arearealestate.com.au.

EXPRESS sPORT Express outlast Barras for breakthrough victory
Mareeba’s Jamie Carroll jostles for possession with City’s Jarrod Kyle.
Heat salvage point with Carroll equaliser By Justin Fris
The Barras shot 1/15 from the field in the final quarter. By Justin Fris
EXPRESS broke through for their first win of 2016, outlasting the Barras 3627 in last Thursday evening’s Mareeba Basketball League contest. Riding off the back of their long awaited victory the previous week, the Barras should have made it two in a row. However bad shooting is bad basketball and the Barras would shoot 1/15 from the field in the final quarter. The going was extremely tough early on, with Express bursting out with an initial 4-0 run. The Barras wouldn’t score points until almost halfway through the first quarter. It wasn’t the fact that the Barras were lacking in imagination going forward. They generated several promising exciting offensive moves, but couldn’t drain the buckets. Lochlan Anthony was a standout for his side, in particular from three point land. In particular, he drained a memorable jumper with just over a minute left in the quarter, which trimmed the margin in half. Incredibly, Express opted not to guard Anthony tightly whenever he entered the key, or set up to shoot from beyond it. It become more and more comical as the match wore on, as he was able to get more looks than an actress’s mirror. Express’s lineup was chock full of experience, however they began to tire during the middle stages of the match. They went into the second half with a 22-16 lead - however considering their shooting output (6/17 from the field) the advantage should have been a lot more. Things would take a turn for the
worse for Express, who would be required to play a man short for the second half. An unfortunate contest would result in a player receiving a knee injury; however he was promptly attended to by local paramedics. Local stalwarts Darrell Turner and Adam Libke would do their best to steady the ship in the final period, which saw several frenetic passages of play. The Barras peppered the boards in the final two minutes of the game, but the ball simply didn’t want to go in. They would be left to lament on their final errors, as had any of these shots been made, they could have stolen the game away. In other matches, the Red Devils ensured that they would enter the Easter break with a perfect win/loss ratio, after crushing the Stingrays 5439. After suffering heartache for so long, the Devils have really begun to blossom as a brutally efficient unit. In the late game, the Comets got their season back on track, thrashing the Ciggy Butts 55-29, which will do their confidence the world of good. The league standings are as follows: Red Devils 15, Young G’s 10, Comets 9, Ciggy Butts 8. Outside of the top four: Express, Stingrays and Barras are all on 6 points. The Mareeba Basketball Association will take a substantial break over the coming weeks, with matches recommencing on Thursday, April 14. Fixtures for the upcoming round (April 14) are as follows: Barras v Stingrays (7.10pm) Express v Ciggy Butts (8.10pm) Red Devils v Young G’s (9.10pm)

THE FNQ Heat and Gold Coast City FC played out a labouring 1-1 draw last Saturday evening at Barlow Park in Cairns. After a sluggish opening, Tim Campbell’s men came to life midway through the second half and ensured they remained unbeaten. City – who began the game in mid table prior to kickoff – started the better, with exciting winger Jordan Lampard pushing the envelope from the off. After winging his way into the box, Lampard pierced a drive towards the bottom right corner at the Cairns Central end, but Heat keeper Kevin Ward denied him. Moments later, the Heat would counter attack through Mareeba’s own Jamie Carroll, with his pace keeping the defence off balance. Carroll would fire a speculative long-range effort in traffic, however City’s Josh Langdon had little to do. The Heat had been able to dictate the tempo of matches in recent weeks, however on this evening they were forced to play second fiddle for lengthy periods. City were extremely confident in possession and very disciplined with their shape. If ever they lost the ball, they would quickly push six or seven players back and deny space for the incoming Heat attackers. But despite a glut of possession against them in the opening 10 minutes, the Heat very nearly scored the game’s first goal. Engineered by exciting midfielder Jamie Gosling, a sublime through ball was fed to Chris O’Hare, who was poaching on the edge of the six yard box. With the goal and Langdon at his mercy, O’Hare lashed his shot into the crossbar, much to the disbelief to all around at Barlow Park. City would then transform into a real purple patch, with Ward forced to pull off two impressive saves in consecutive minutes. Lampard was at it again, tormenting defenders along the Grandstand flank. He turned Shimon Wantanebe inside out near the left by-line and curled in a low effort toward goal. Ward acutely kept the ball out, by sticking his right leg out and hastily ushering it out for a City corner. He would be required to follow up a minute later, where he would rise above several defenders and pluck off Roman Hofmann’s darting header. The Heat appeared to be frustrated with City’s dominance, with Shaun Owens lucky not to be given a yellow card for a cynical challenge on Justyn McKay. Both sides would create a few half chances prior to the interval, with the hosts definitely the happier at heading in on level terms. Lampard continued to cause havoc for the home side, with his 58th minute follow up from a dangerous free kick drifting inches away from the net. Surprisingly, City boss Grae Piddick would substitute Lampard for Riley Dillon in the 63rd minute – a point
which Campbell would touch on post-match. Patience would eventually pay off for the visitors 10 minutes later, who would open the scoring through Jarrod Kyle. After receiving a telegraphed pass from Ben Litfin, Kyle embarked on a marauding run that Lotthar Matthaus would have been proud of. Kyle finished off his run by smartly rounding Ward, and tapping home to an empty net. There didn’t appear to be many City fans in the stadium, as his goal was met with stony silence. Despite trailing, the Heat didn’t panic – as they have increased their match simulation training under Campbell. Therefore there was no real surprise that it took them only four minutes to score an equaliser. After working brilliantly in tandem with Kieran Sanders, Carroll bustled his way through the box and tapped home from close range. Both sides would huff and puff in the final 10 minutes to find a winner, however both defences ensured it would remain honours even. Post match, Campbell said he was pleased with the standard of the contest and was happy to head into the Easter break unbeaten. “On reflection, I think a draw was a fair result,” he said. “It’s the first time this season that we had a really good chance on 10 minutes – and I think we have been taking them; going 1-0 up early doors and it gives us confidence to go on from there.” Campbell added: “Once we missed that – and Gold Coast came down and missed their chance – Kev made two outstanding saves to keep the score at 0-0. “I think that was a real wake up call for the boys. Gold Coast keep the ball – they are really good in possession, gave us a run around a little bit and I think we will learn from that.” When asked about the Lampard substitution, Campbell said it puzzled him – although it was a welcomed relief. “I was a bit relieved when that happened,” he said. “I didn’t see him get a knock and when he came off I was thinking: ‘Who are they bringing on off the bench’, as he was very dangerous.” Campbell added: “I had the feeling when JC put that goal in, I thought we’d bombard them. But we’re a good football side and at times we keep the ball a little too much. “I think we did that in the last 10 minutes and we overplayed the ball a little bit – instead of getting the ball to Kieran and JC.” City boss Piddick said: “It’s a handy point away from home. On the positive side, we controlled large chunks of the game. “On the negative side, we needed to make that control into goals. I think particularly in the first half – apart from a 10 minute period – we were extremely dominant.” The Heat will have a few days off over Easter, before their next home game against the Northern Fury.

Bandits gather for end of season celebration

THE Mareeba Bandits Cricket Club community gathered last Friday evening at the Mareeba Turf Club to celebrate the end of the cricket season. It was a memorable 2015/2016 campaign for the Bandits (both senior and junior), who implemented a special blend of experience and youth. At one end of the spectrum, club legends Robert ‘Bomber’ Adams and Brendan Payne continued to set a great example for their teammates and the club. Payne was recognised on the night for his superb season, taking home well deserved praise and recognition for his deeds and was awarded the ‘John Henry’ memorial shield. Ricky Shave had a stand out first season for the Bandits staring with both bat and ball. For his efforts he was awarded Best Bowler and Player’s Player. ‘Junior Cricketer of the Year’ was awarded to rising star Jett Prien. Many
youngsters achieved highly throughout the season, but Prien received the highest honour of being accepted in the QLD Under 12 side. Elite youngsters Lachlan Ford, Luke Lamborn, Chris Adams and Rowan Foxwell also built on their solid introductions to senior cricket with each receiving various awards on the night. Many other awards were also handed out on the night to several worthy recipients. With such a solid core nucleus of youngsters coming through the grades, the Bandits faithful appear to be in good hands. Greg Lamborn was also recognised for his tireless commitment to the club, receiving the ‘Frosty Firth’ memorial shield. The Mareeba Bandits will bite the bullet in 2016-2017 season and will compete in the second grade competition which will provide a great challenge.
Pre Easter break Hockey wrap THE Atherton Tablelands Hockey Association is delighted to announce that the Atherton Under 18 girls and boys Tomahawks teams playing in the Cairns competition are excelling. The boys remain undefeated, while the girls have now had two wins on the trot. Only having capacity to train on grass, yet competing on a Friday night in Cairns on turf, their ability to dominate the field of play is becoming evident. March 19 games in Division Two saw the Green Machine go down to Troopers 4-0, with Felix Radcliffe scoring two goals for his team. In the second game of the division the Lightning Hawks were unable to hold off a determined All Stars with Tayltha McDonald, Max Williams and Jhai Mehmet all scoring in a great win. Division One saw fierce competition with the scoreline not reflecting the intensity of the games. All Stars defeated the Bionic Blues in a great win with Clem Lu-
