Putting the U in community It was a double celebration last Tuesday night as 14 community groups gathered to receive grants courtesy of the Mareeba and Dimbulah Community Bank branches of Bendigo Bank. The grants were part of the 2019 Community Grant Program and saw $150,000 provided to those groups to be utilised towards carrying out improvements and projects which would benefit the entire Mareeba and Dimbulah communities. THE Mareeba and Dimbulah communities are $3.5m better off thanks to their local Bendigo Bank.

Last Wednesday night the Mareeba and Dimbulah Community Bank branches of Bendigo Bank held a Community Grant Program presentation night that saw $150,000 in grants given out to 14 community groups. This was in addition to the more than $40,000 in sponsorships to 20 community groups already contributed in 2019.

The amount contributed as part of the 2019 Community Grants Program saw the Bank reach a milestone of $3.5 million dollars given back to the communities in grants, sponsorships and shareholder dividends since 2005.

nancial Services, the company which operates the Mareeba and Dimbulah Community Bank Branches, said the grants would be used to carry out improvements and projects which would benefit the entire Mareeba and Dimbulah communities.

“2019 grants ranged from $2,000 to $50,000” Gilbert said.

“We were very impressed with the quality of applications received and are delighted to be able to support a range of projects, many of which may not have been financially viable without the support of our Community Bank Branch,” Director Gilbert said.

Administered by Community Enterprise Foundation™, the philanthropic arm of Bendigo and Adelaide Bank, the Mareeba and Dimbulah Community Grants Program has received a large number of applications

from local community organisations seeking funding for projects.

“The partnership with the Foundation enables local community organisations to share in our success.

“We aim to support accessible and valued community services and partnerships leading change which strengthen and unite our community.”

“Our grants went to 14 community groups in the region, who can use the funding for infrastructure and building purposes,” Mareeba and Dimbulah Financial Services Limited’s Administration, Support and Marketing Officer Rhonda Stevens said.

“The mantra of the Community Bank is to bring the community together.

“When the community decides to bank with us we make

sure we inject it back, and it’s through these programs that we can help better the groups who do such important work in our region.”

The QLD network was also kept busy this year with appeals to help communities affected by floods and bushfires across the State.

At a time when upholding community expectations in banking has never been more important, Bendigo Bank has announced its Community Bank network returned more than $24 million to Australian communities in the last financial year.

The investment has supported important local sporting, infrastructure, education, arts and cultural initiatives and other unmet community needs.

Since its establishment 21 years ago, the unique Community Bank model has returned

more than $229 million to Australian communities, in addition to over $57 million in dividends to local shareholders.

In many cases, these investments have unlocked further government and local business funding, realising community projects that have exceeded many multiple millions of dollars nationally - as well as supporting local job generation and economic growth.

Drought threatening to cripple dairy industry QDO State Councillor and Millaa Millaa farmer James Geraghty is urging the State and Federal Governments to help the crippled dairy industry before it is too late.

“The purpose of my presentation was to implore to those in attendance, including LNP’s Andrew Powell, that the extensive financial stress being seen

in the dairy industry needs to be addressed,” he said.

“The drought in particular has caused enormous consequences for everyone involved in the industry – even here on the Tablelands.

“While we’re not in drought up here, the cost of everything we use has increased significantly and become almost unaffordable.

“Grain has gone from the mid-400s a tonne to more than 600 a tonne, whilst cotton feed went from 350 a tonne to as high as 700 tonne and now is no longer available.”

Mr Geraghty said industry groups and representatives want to see a 10 cent increase to every litre of milk with the exception of ultra-high temperature (UHT) and flavoured milk.

“We also want the levy collected at the processor and paid by the consumer,” he said.

“We would like a five-year window with these policies in place, and if given that amount of time we’re confident we can turn it around into a sustainable industry over time.

“We’re currently 200 million litres of milk short every year yet the price hasn’t been raised.

“Something needs to be done, if we can’t get a 10 cent increase now, we’ll never get it – and we’ll see great generational dairy farmers lost as a result.”

Kara set to lead in Canberra Mareeba State High School student Kara Trimble is off to Canberra this weekend as part of the ‘Country to Canberra’ leadership program.

THE ‘Country to Canberra’ leadership competition gives young women in rural areas around the country a chance to speak about a specific issue, and their struggles with that issue living in rural Australia.

Mareeba State High School student Kara Trimble is one of four students in Queensland who won the competition based on her passionate video on this year’s topic – gender equality.

Kara will be departing for Canberra on Saturday and won’t

return until mid-next week.

Winners of this prestigious annual competition are awarded with an all-expenses paid trip to Canberra for a once in a lifetime experience including personal empowerment and leadership workshops plus a unique ‘Power Day’.

The ‘Power Day’ lets young aspiring women to meet successful and motivating female leaders. Past winners have met Foreign Minister Julie Bishop, National Farmers’ Federation

President Fiona Simson, and UN Women Australia’s Executive Director Janelle Weissman and on occasions the Prime Minister.

Kara was ecstatic about winning and is looking forward to the experience in Canberra.

“I was told by several teachers at the school that I should apply for it,” she said.

“I went to Mrs Prizmic, she told me what it was and I immediately fell in love with what it stood for.

“A lot of young kids in rural areas don’t have access to mentors and the proper resources to help nurture their leadership potential.”

Kara’s video submission for the competition was about being ‘geologically isolated’ and how that can impact the community she lives in.

Kara spoke about how this distance from resources affects women’s individual growth and how it can affect men and thrust the community into the stereotypes that we often see.

“It’s not only women who need to be educated in leadership, it’s also young men,” she said.

“Most men are unable to reach their leadership potential due to their isolation so they’re still left in the stereotypical mindset.

“We just need to break the cycle and stereotypes and pave a way for better gender equality on both sides.”

After Kara’s trip to Canberra, she will be conversing with a mentor online once a month for the next 12 months, helping her in her studies and keeping track of her progress.

Cr Pedersen to call it a day at next election

Mareeba Shire Deputy Mayor Alan Pedersen announced he will be stepping down from council at next year's Local Government Elections in March.

MAREEBA Shire Council Deputy Mayor Alan Pedersen has announced that he will be stepping down from council at the next Local Government Elections in March.

Cr Pedersen has been an integral member of the Tablelands Regional Council (prior to de-amalgamation) and the Mareeba Shire Council, having served the community in the roles of councillor and deputy mayor for the past 15 years.

Cr Pedersen spoke about the reasoning behind his decision to step down from the Mareeba Shire Council.

“I’ve got a cattle station, mining and earthmoving operation which ensures I work almost 365 days a year, so I think it’s time to cut it back so I can enjoy a day off every now and then,” he said.

Cr Pedersen said his time on council was extremely rewarding.

“I loved the opportunity to

serve the people who elected me – it certainly is a great privilege,” he said.

“From council’s perspective, our aim was to keep rates down to an affordable level and delivering capital works, particularly the big projects such as roads, bridges and the upgrade of the airport etc.

“So having the staff that has been able to carry out such projects has been great.

“I have been fortunate enough to be surrounded by competent and knowledgeable staff, especially in the past six years.

“I have enjoyed sitting beside colleagues who have the same attitude and sense of responsibility, which is to ensure we act in the best interests of the community as that is what we’re elected to do.

“We were expected to fail since de-amalgamation; however in 2017 we were the most financially sustainable shire in Queensland so we’ve definitely proved the critics wrong.”

Cr Pedersen has been an integral member of the Mareeba and Tablelands community for a number of years, and his commitment to the betterment of the region is one that will be looked back on fondly.

Local couple fights to eradicate feral pig problem FERAL pigs are a scourge that continues to impact our environment, and it is an issue that is being felt significantly here on the Atherton Tablelands.

The threat that an unrestrained feral pig population poses is considerable, both from a financial and public health perspective, which is why the work of a local couple who are dedicating their time, effort and money to eradicate the problem is of such grave importance.

Graham Schoorl and Pattie Jeffers live on a farm in East Barron, and they have seen firsthand the enormous negative effect pigs have on the surrounding environment.

They’re confident they have an answer to help manage the problem, and are currently in the process of purchasing feral pig traps from the United States that will hopefully go a long way in reducing the numbers of the serious agricultural pest.

“This trap from America is extremely effective as it catches roughly 85 per cent of a sounder (herd of feral pigs),” Graham said.

“A number of sounders we have seen have in excess of 20 pigs, so with this trap we would be able to catch a number somewhere in the late-teens.

“Statistics show that you need to catch 70 per cent of a sounder at any one time to keep the feral pig population at a manageable level, so having this trap in Australia is crucial as it is more efficient than any found right around the country.

“Nothing like this exists currently in Australia, which is why Pattie and I see our plan as somewhat of a pilot program.

“If this succeeds, we can then look at implementing more traps in other areas throughout the country and then we may see less harm being caused by feral pigs as a result.”

The traps have a state-ofthe-art camera and tech system which will allow Graham and Pattie to deploy the trap from anywhere at the simple click of a button on their mobile phone without any delay.

Given that the traps have no delay, it will ensure the pigs don’t have time to become educated on how to manoeuvre around the system.

Graham and Pattie hope to have the traps transported to Australia by as early as Christmas, and have committed money from their own pocket to purchase two of the traps which are roughly $15,000 each.

“We are committed to this 100 per cent,” Graham said.

“Pattie and I quit our jobs so we could dedicate our lives to this as we know the problems wild pigs cause, and that’s not just from an agricultural perspective.

“They also carry a number

of diseases such as Swine flu, Diphtheria and Tuberculosis which could eventually pose an immediate threat to the health of our communities.”

Graham and Pattie are looking for financial support from the Local, State and Federal Governments to help their cause, and have employed the help of the Barron Catchment Care (BCC) to aid their applications for funding.

Formed in 1994, Barron Catchment Care are a not-forprofit organisation that identify and implement sustainable land use and catchment management strategies for the Barron River.

They have offered a letter in support of Graham and Pattie, and are in the process of organ-

ising meetings with prominent politicians and industry representatives to secure much-needed funding to ensure the longterm sustainability of their pilot program.

Graham’s father Case, who is also a BCC member, said a number of farmers in the area have lost in excess of $10,000 in crop damage due to feral pigs.

“This is a problem that is getting out of hand and something needs to be done about it,” he said.

“I don’t think people realise the amount of damage they’re doing, including to that of the Great Barrier Reef.

“Farmers are being blamed for the sediment run-off, yet if you saw Graham and Pattie’s

footage of the pigs’ activity in the waterways, you would quickly see what kind of sedimentary impact they are having.

“So, from BCC’s perspective, we’re pleased to see what Graham and Pattie are doing and their vision has our support.”

Graham and Pattie said they would like to thank BCC and Terrain NRM for their letters of support, as well as the number of local businesses who have come on board to help their cause.

THE official launch for the new Crime Stoppers Far Northern Volunteer Area Committee (VAC) was hosted last Wednesday at Anzac Park in Mareeba.

The launch saw dozens of interested locals and prominent figures in the community coming out to commemorate the new committees founding.

Crime Stoppers gives residents the safety and security of being able to report crimes anonymously without the fear of coming forward.

The VAC supports Crime Stoppers by promoting the service and lets people know that Crime Stoppers is here.

VAC Chairperson Mladen Bosnic was extremely happy with the launch and was pleased with the turn out.

“I thought the launch went very well,” he said.

“It was well attended, we had about 40-50 people there.

“The launch was everything it was meant to be.”

Members of the community expressed interest on the day about Crime Stoppers and what they can do to help.

There are many different options open to people who may not want a seat on the committee – volunteering to help out at events is just one way you can

support Crime Stoppers.

Mr Bosnic believes that the community should embrace Crime Stoppers and help support them as they are volunteers only.

Crime Stoppers is all about keeping our communities and families safe. It is a community program that allows people to provide anonymous information about criminal activity and supports the Queensland Police Service and other community agencies, in solving and preventing crime.

Helping hand for Mareeba rehab ward

The Mareeba Hospital were the beneficiaries of more than $23,000 in funding to go towards much-needed machinery and services at the local hospital thanks to the generosity of the Hand Heart Pocket and Mareeba Masonic Lodge.

Rehab patients at Mareeba Hospital have been given a hand up with their recovery, thanks to the local Freemasons.

Granite Masonic Lodge and Hand Heart Pocket the Charity of Freemasons Queensland provided $23,598 for a blanket warmer and bladder scanner.

Granite Masonic Lodge representative Roy Blakeney said they’ve always been keen to help fulfil the needs of their community.

“This is our local hospital, so it’s a good feeling to know that we’ve been able to contribute to what is needed, through the Far North Queensland Hospital Foundation,” he said.

“The Lodge contributed $5,000 and we were fortunate enough to receive a Hand Heart Pocket Grassroots Grant for the remaining $18,598.”

Hand Heart Pocket Chief Executive Officer Gary Mark said Granite Masonic Lodge has taken an interest in providing a hand up in the community over the years.

“Earlier this year, a new palliative care room was opened at Mareeba Blue Care Garden Settlement Aged Care, with Granite

Masonic Lodge and Hand Heart Pocket having donated $42,500 towards the cause,” Gary said.

A SUCCESSFUL trial of the Buchanan variety of wheat in Tolga has members of the agricultural industry on the Tablelands optimistic about the abundance of local production and export opportunities that could occur as a result.

The Atherton Tablelands hasn’t traditionally been a wheat-growing region, however TGT Tolga saw a chance to capitalise on what they felt was a gap in the market in northern Queensland.

TGT Tolga’s Senior Agronomist Mark Norvall said given the troubles areas like the Western Downs are currently experiencing with drought, a chance to

produce locally without the expensive cost of freight attached was of great interest.

“The Atherton Tablelands has a great climate for this variety of wheat (Buchanan),” Mr Norvall said.

“I have a lot of experience growing wheat from my time farming in Zimbabwe, and the conditions were very comparable to here - so I was always confident we could achieve a significant yield.”

Despite Mr Norvall’s confidence surrounding the wheat trial, the yield was still able to exceed expectations.

“We were expecting a yield in excess of two tonnes of

wheat,” he said.

“However we eclipsed that figure and were able to yield more than three tonnes which is fantastic.

“Those results are reassurance to us that there is ample opportunity here on the Tablelands for wheat.

“We will now be looking in the near future to grow more and hopefully out of that we’ll be able to open up both domestic and international export markets.

“There are Asian countries which are very interested in our wheat industry and we will be looking to realise that potential.”

BE PREPARED: Acting Inspector Darryl Chaplain is urging residents have their properties prepared as the state battles a devastating fire season - with conditions expected to worsen.

WITH Queensland having experienced an already horrific fire season, Acting Inspector of the Fire and Rescue’s Western Command Darryl Chaplain is urging residents to be vigilant in their preparations as conditions are expected to worsen.

One such issue firefighters continue to encounter are unprepared properties, with obstructions to access such as overhanging vegetation and narrow gates making it difficult for first responders to enter properties

and therefore effectively contain blazes.

“We noticed it in September when we had a number of fires in the region as we struggled to gain access to properties, particularly with the bigger tankers,” Acting Inspector Darryl Chaplain said.

“And with the high to severe fire conditions that are currently threatening the Tablelands, it is imperative that our big tankers have access to help best manage any fire dangers.

STRUCTURE: • Clear leaves, twigs, bark and other debris from the roof and gutters • Purchase and test the effectiveness of gutter plugs • Enclose open areas under decks and floors • Install fine steel wire mesh screens on all windows, doors, vents and weep holes • Point LPG cylinder relief valves away from the house • Conduct maintenance checks on pumps, generators and water systems • Seal all gaps in external roof and wall cladding

ACCESS: • Display a prominent house or lot number in case it is required in an emergency • Ensure there is adequate access to your property for fire trucks which is four metres wide by four metres high, with a turnaround area VEGETATION: • Reduce vegetation along the access path • Mow your grass regularly • Remove excess flammable material like long dry grass, dead leaves and branches • Trim low-lying to a height of two metres from the ground surrounding your home

“There is no rain forecast at this stage, so we’re expecting the conditions to get worse as the height of summer approaches.

“We have responded to some fires in the Tolga and Rocky Creek area that had the potential to become significant dangers; however we were able to contain them.”

Acting Inspector Chaplain said residents must take heed of all fire warnings and remain updated on conditions across the region.

Donation to help drought stricken areas

The Mareeba Leagues club has generously donated $10,000 to the Queensland Drought Appeal through the Queensland Country Women’s Association (QCWA).

The QCWA has been chosen by the government to administer the funds of the Queensland Drought Appeal, State Vice-President of the Northern Region Christine Reghenzani

(OAM) was on hand to receive the donation.

The money donated can not only be used by drought stricken areas, but also areas struggling to supress fires can apply for the money.

Trivia night to support foster animals The Rocky Creek Igloo will play host to the second annual FNQ Foster Farm Trivia night on Saturday, November 30.

Funds raised from the event will support the rescue, rehabilitation and re-homing of farm animals through the FNQ Foster Farm.

The fun filled night will kick off at 6pm with trivia, performances, an auction, heaps of prizes and many more activities on the night.

Mareeba remembers

Students and community members attended the Mareeba RSL Remembrance Day Ceremony at Anzac Park last Monday.

ON the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, Australia pauses and remembers those who laid down their lives to preserve the future we live in today.

This year marked one hundred and one years since the guns fell silent over the Western front and WW1 was ended after four years of constant war, marking the day forever in the history books as a day of remembrance.

Remembrance Day is commemorated across the country in many different cities and townships and is attended not only by members of the public and community officials, but also family members of past war veterans, often sporting their medals and paying their respects.

ANZAC Park in Mareeba was packed full of community members and officials last Monday paying their respects to the fallen heroes of the Mareeba Shire who travelled overseas to fight for their country.

Speeches were presented by Mayor Tom Gilmore, St Stephens’s student Caitlin Wadley and Mr Gordon Powell, a WW2 Navy and Knight of the Legion of Honour, who read the Ode.

THE Mareeba Chamber of Commerce and the Mareeba Business Women’s Club hosted a highly successful Business lunch recently and was attended by Member for Cook, Cynthia Lui. Ms Lui personally invited the Minister for Employment and Small Business and Minister for Training and skills development to attend the lunch.

“I gave Shannon Fentiman a personal invite to come to Mareeba to take part in our Business Lunch Event,” Ms Lui said.

“I wanted to give local businesses and organisations in Mareeba the opportunity to meet

1. Spray a 9-inch square pan lightly with cooking spray.

2. Add sugar, milk and cream to melted butter; mix well. Microwave on high power for 3 minutes, stir and cook another 2 minutes. Stir well. Scrape down sides of bowl and return to microwave. Microwave 3 more minutes, stir again, then finish with another 2½ minutes in the microwave.

4. Remove from microwave, add marshmallow and stir. Add white chocolate chips and vanilla. Stir until very smooth all ingredients are well incorporated.

5. Place semi-sweet chocolate chips and food coloring in a second microwave-safe bowl. Immediately, transfer about ½ of the hot white chocolate mixture to this second bowl. Stir well with a strong handled spatula or wooden spoon until chocolate chips are completely melted and incorporated.

6. Working quickly plop scoops of each mixture in a random pattern into a prepared pan.

7. Jiggle pan to smooth surface then take a small knife, coated with a bit of butter and run the blade back and forth through the fudge to create the swirly effect.

8. Cool completely. Use foil handles to lift fudge from pan before cutting into squares.

Don’t let someone take the credit for a job you did. Be courteous if you wish to avoid major delays.

EXPRESS SPORT PORT Gladiators AGM a roaring success

THE foundations are in place for the Mareeba Gladiators to build on their successful end to their 2019 campaign as they recently held their Annual General Meeting (AGM).

At the meeting, the senior club was able to secure a 16-person committee, with Bevan Carroll returning as president.

Accompanying Bevan will be John Arcidiacono who will be vice-president, Dean Barnard

as manager and Evan McGrath as the club’s patron.

The interest at the recent AGM is an extremely positive sign for the club, and is reassurance that they are heading in the right direction.

The AGM’s success follows an abundance of key signings which include the likes of Maddie Oosen, Cody Kennedy, and Marvin Toko among others.

The Murri Touch Tournament, hosted by Mulungu Health Care Service was a huge success.

New annual touch football tournament

Mulungu Health Care Service recently held a new touch football competition in Mareeba – the Murri Touch Tournament.

The new tournament was created to bring together the various communities within Far North Queensland, the event aimed to promote the Deadly Choices message of; making healthy choices and to encourage regular physical activity.

There were 14 teams entered

with teams traveling all the way from Innisfail and people over the age of 55 were seen in some of the teams.

Queensland Cowboys rugby league player Ray Thompson is a ‘deadly choices’ ambassador and was present on the day.

Being its inaugural year the event was a huge success with over 136 participants and 300 community members attending.

Mulungu Health Care Ser-

vice Corporate Services Manager Samanthia Dooley was ecstatic about the first year.

“The event went off with a bang with the amount of participants we had,” she said.

“All participants have to have had their health checked in the past 12 months to participate.

“This helps to inspire young men and women to take control of their own health and inspire

others to do the same.”

The event will be hosted in Mareeba again next year and is aimed to be bigger and better than this year.

Mulungu Health Care Services would like to thank the numerous volunteers that helped make the event a success; Mareeba Touch Association, First Aid Officers the Caterers and the teams that travelled to participate in the Tournament.

JUNIOR cricket in Atherton is on the rise with numerous players recently selected for representative duties in a variety of age groups.

25 players were selected to play in age groups that ranged from U12’s to U16’s.

The U12 to U14 teams were all selected to play state carnivals in mid-December while the U15’s team played their carnival in early November in Mackay.

The U16 team will be playing in the Bulls Masters Youth Cup in Mackay on the 8th to the 12th of December; players will be looking for selection in the Northern Flames Team to compete in the 2020 state carnival.

The U12’s had two selection trials with one team playing in the Ian Healy Cup in Brisbane early next year.
