Local honey packer, Honey Providore attended the third Australian Beekeeping Congress at RACV Royal Pines Resort on the Gold Coast recently, taking home top gong for its honey comb.

Honey Providore’s winning honey comb secured first place for its Best Cut Honey Comb produced on the Tablelands from a Molloy Red Box Honey Flow.

Added to this, Honey Providore also cinched second and third place for its Cut Honey Comb in Honey and were awarded second and third place.

“We knew we had a great product but to succeed in our first ever, international standard competition is, pardon the pun, a bit of a buzz,” said Honey Providore’s owner, Graham Thornton.

“One of the most significant learnings from this year’s congress was the fact that imported honey from China has risen close to 200 per cent. This imported honey is being packed and sold throughout Australia.

Transport and Main Roads is continuing its review into the Millaa Millaa-Malanda Road bitumen issue.

TMR District Director Sandra Burke said it was too early to know exactly why the unusual event occurred, but it was essential to find out.

“Our review will look at the project’s design, materials and construction methodology and give us information we can use to ensure this situation does not happen again,” Ms Burke said.

“Crews are continuing to carry out repairs to Millaa Millaa-Malanda Road, Kennedy Highway and Palmerston Highway, with all affected roads now stabilised.

“Permanent sealing works at all sites should be finalised by mid-August, weather permitting.

“The Millaa Millaa-Malanda Rd site is stable, with remedial

repairs progressing and the specialist machinery working well.

However the surface is still quite uneven due to the events of the past week.

“We are looking at options to provide the smoothest, most durable long-term solution and should have a decision very soon, after some final technical checks.”

Ms Burke said repairs on the Kennedy Highway, near Upper Barron Road, should be finished with specialist machinery then moving to the Palmerston Highway for repair works.

“We continue to work with resealing contractor COLAS to seek a permanent solution to resealing all the affected areas,” she said.

Ms Burke said TMR had received 54 completed claims for compensation.

Mr Thornton has reinvigorated the business by investing heavily in new equipment, hives and training for his team which now manages over 600 hives across the Tablelands in about a 1000km radius. The team shares a keen passion for bees and an understanding of sustainability in business and the environment.

Mr Thornton is the President of the Cairns and District Beekeepers Association and continues to donate his time to share his knowledge, assist and encourage others to enter into the beekeeping industry.

Honey Providore has expanded throughout Queensland and services a demand for fresh honey.

Knuth still pushing for solution to croc issues

KAP State Member for Hill Shane Knuth has again called for the State Government to ‘get real’ on crocodile management following the release of the 2017 Queensland Crocodile Management Update.

“Today’s announcement reaffirms there is a croc issue in North Queensland,’’ Mr Knuth said. “The Government is reluctant to make the tough decisions because keeping southern votes is more important to them than protecting the life and livelihood of North Queenslanders.”

The Government’s update showed a spike in the number of crocodile sightings, jumping to 684 in 2017 compared to 378 in 2016 and just 176 in 2010.

“This is triple the sightings reported from seven years ago and an 80% increase in sightings

from 2016,’’ he said.

“Those are extraordinary numbers and any sane person would argue it represents a large increase in crocodile numbers.

Most people I speak to in the region tell me they don’t even bother reporting sightings anymore as nothing gets done, so that increase is only the tip of the iceberg.’’

Mr Knuth said most North Queenslanders were sick and tired of the glossy, political speak from the Government and Minister Enoch’s assertion ‘the Government is confident that Queensland’s approach to crocodile management is sound.’

“Obviously the reality is the exact opposite,” Mr Knuth said.

“When we have tourism bodies such as TTNQ and TPDD warning of the effects on the

tourism industry because of increased activity of crocodiles and the Government’s own report showing staggering increases in sightings, it begs the question – why isn’t the Government acting?”

He said the provision of funding for drones to Surf Life Saving Queensland was a welcome addition to the organisation, but is not the solution to crocodile management or reducing the instances of sightings and beach closures.

“It is great for SLSQ to have access to this technology, but it doesn’t solve the root of the problem,” Mr Knuth said.

“We shouldn’t accept the increasing number of beach closures or beach sightings, as crocs shouldn’t be there in the first place.”

Kuranda Men’s Shed one step closer to opening

It’s nothing but smiles all round at the home of the new Kuranda Men’s Shed as the community group can finally get underway and make a start.

It’s been a long time coming for a group of local guys that have wanted to have a Men’s Shed of their own for years but struggled to find a site for a building donated to them from the military.

With help from Mareeba Shire Council, the group now has a base – and their building is on site and ready to be erected after Council generously shipped it north from its origins in New South Wales.

Currently making a start on some projects out of an old council shed, the group is also brainstorming fundraising ideas to gather the capital to get the building up and fully operational.

Mareeba Shire Council has yet again stepped in and offered to match every dollar the guys can raise to a maximum of $40,000. Technical Services Manager Sam Wakeford said the council is keen to support community groups where it can.

“They do fill a very important part of the community,” he said of the Men’s Shed movement.

“Mareeba Shire Council has been working with the Men’s Shed now for a number of years to not only find a home but to help them get up and running –

The group is reaching out to the general public to help them make that $40,000 target which

“We have a lot of people that are isolated, some are homeless, some people that have various problems and some people that are handicapped. This will give them a place they can come and

$5m for airport upgrade MAREEBA Shire Council has received an extra $5 million commitment from the Australian Government to bolster stage two of the Mareeba Airport Upgrade.

The funding has been committed under the second round of the Building Better Regions Fund (BBRF), bringing the Australian Government’s total commitment to the Mareeba Airport Upgrade to $10 million.

Northern-based Queensland Senator Ian Macdonald who made the announcement earlier this week has been advocating with Mayor Tom Gilmore to se-

cure the extra funding.

“This is a wonderful project, and I am delighted that the BBRF has been able to provide this level of assistance to the Mareeba Airport Upgrade,” Senator Ian Macdonald said.

“Mayor Tom Gilmore and his team have worked tirelessly for years towards this outcome.”

“These upgrades will create opportunities for more general aviation traffic at Mareeba, and even for commercial passenger flights directly onto the Atherton Tablelands,” he said.

thia Lui said she was pleased the Australian Government had recognised the value of providing further funds to upgrade the Mareeba airport’s runway and taxiway infrastructure through this funding.

“This is a critical project that will support the expansion of Mareeba as a provider of aviation services in the state’s north,” Ms Lui said.

Mayor Tom Gilmore welcomed the announcement saying the extra funding will enable Council to make further enhancements to the emerging

Stage two of the airport upgrade will focus on improvements to the runway and taxiways.

“My sincere appreciation must be extended to the Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack, Dr John McVeigh, Warren Entsch and Senators James McGrath, Ian Macdonald, Matthew Canavan and Barry O’Sullivan, who have all been instrumental in securing this funding,” said Cr Gilmore.

“I also must thank Council staff for their input.”

PCYC aims to Brake the Cycle

Mareeba teenagers struggling to get their driver’s license now have access to a free service that will help them reach the 100 hour driving requirement.

Braking the Cycle was kicked off in Mareeba last week by the PCYC, with Northern Queensland PCYC coordinator Senior Sergeant Adam Willimott saying it will fill a big need in the town.

“Some kids don’t have a car or they don’t have the time or they don’t have enough money to afford petrol to do the 100 hours,” he said.

“Kids can come in and they can get their 100 hours of driving for free, sitting next to community volunteers who then become mentors.”

Mareeba PCYC branch manager Sergeant Mary-Anne West said the scheme will likely help with local youth unemployment levels, community connection and driver education.

“Mareeba’s got zero public transport except for taxis, a lot of them can’t go to work on farms and can’t get to work or even to uni or Tafe or anything like that,

so the demand’s there because they can’t get their 100 hours up,” she said.

“Either no one else has got their license or they’ve only got their P license and to be with the learner you’ve got to have an open driver’s license for more than 12 months. There’s also an issue because a lot of the families don’t have a car.”

A brand new Mazda 2 is being donated to the scheme by Mareeba Rotary in conjunction with E-Rotary Club through Mareeba Mazda which has also donated free servicing of the vehicle for the life of the program.

Volunteers are being sought to sit with the learner drivers while they clock up the required hours. Thankfully the entire Traffic Branch of the Mareeba Police has offered their free time to help but Sgt West said more volunteers are needed.

“You’ve got to have a blue card, and open driver’s license and we can sign them off on a 12 months Driver’s Authorisation,” she said.

Water project will help boost growth A MAJOR infrastructure project which will enable future development in Mareeba is now complete.

Mayor Tom Gilmore said the upgrade of the town’s wastewater reticulation network at Kenneally Road was critical for future growth and development.

“Faster than expected population growth means sewerage systems in Mareeba have reached capacity in certain areas and Council is investing in major infrastructure to accommodate future growth,” Cr Gilmore said.

The project was jointly funded by the Queensland Government’s Building our Regions program and Mareeba Shire Council, and included the instal-

lation of a new 300mm sewer rising main along Kenneally Road and upgrading the existing pump station.

Cr Gilmore said the upgrade will prevent system failures which can have immediate effects on public health, water quality, commercial farming and Council’s legal obligations.

“The upgrade mitigates long terms risks to community wellbeing, the business reputation of the horticulture and other industries, and of course, will ensure Council is meeting its environmental responsibilities,” he said.

“Without the assistance of the Queensland Government, we would not be able to upgrade and maintain our infrastructure.”

Minister in town to kick off TRC project Minister for Local Government Stirling Hinchliffe made his way to Atherton last week to ‘turn the sod’ to kick off the process of building the town’s $2.75 million Community Education, Training and Disaster Coordination Facility.

Mr Hinchliffe said the benefits of the facility would be felt for years to come.

“When it’s finished, this facility will be state-of-the-art and properly equipped to coordinate disaster and emergency operations, particularly in times of natural disaster,” Mr Hinchliffe said.

“As well as the obvious benefit of providing greater protection for the community, the multi-use facility will also be a focal point for educating and training in areas such as first aid skills and business continuity.

“On top of that, this project will have a positive impact on local families and the economy even before it opens, with the construction set to support more than 12 local jobs.

“Importantly, the worth of this facility will be felt far beyond the Tablelands Regional Council boundaries because it will also enable the council to provide increased support to neighbouring councils in times of disaster.”

The project is made possible through the $60 million 2017-19 Local Government Grants and Subsidies Program (LGGSP).

Tablelands Regional Council Mayor Joe Paronella said the benefits wouldn’t be limited to just disaster management uses.

“The community will also have access to the facility for other local group meetings and training and educational events and programs,” he said.

“We thank the State Government for its contribution towards a project that not only meets the community’s needs but will also help the Tablelands region become even more liveable.”

The LGGSP is designed to support councils to meet the needs of their community.

Development application does not align with town plan There is a Development Application for a Material Change of Use (light industrial use in the commercial zoning of Atherton CBD) before Council presently.

Unlike some citizens I would like to throw my support behind TRC. I admire our present planning documents including the Town Plan, the Priors Creek Proposal and the newly formulated Economic Development Plan. I look forward to working with Council to implement these fine plans and help them evolve in future as I have done in the past.

I hope our councillors will see fit to deny this MCU as it is not in keeping with planning principles enshrined in our present planning and economic development documents.

For those who remember Atherton having many more light industrial workshops in the town centre in the past, I urge you to try the following thought experiment: When cars were scarce, horses and bullocks formed our Main Street and were catered for. Cars replaced horses and the blacksmiths changed from horse shoeing or harness and buggy repair to repairing tractors and cars.

Today’s centre has a few remnants of those repair shops operating as “existing non-conforming usages”. The town centre now is replete with hairdressers, cafes, restaurants, banks, health and community services, professional services, and some retail shops which have managed to fend off the attacks of globalism

and internet shopping. We now have industrial zones outside the town centre. In earlier days the entire centre looked much more like an industrial zone in keeping with those times and the economy of the past.

Imagine what our ancestors would make of this enormous change in our townscape! Now imagine what our children or grandchildren will think of us re-industrialising our CBD just as Atherton is about to have a major upgrade through the Priors Creek project.

What vision of the Atherton of the future do we hold? One that yearns to go back to the “good old days” (formerly known as “these trying times”) which have gone the way of the ox? Or one that bravely looks toward a future where new businesses and investors can be confident that their commercially zoned neighbours will not arbitrarily be re-zoned as workshops?

As you may know the Mens Shed main aim is to provide a local community venue for people of all ages and circumstances to pass on and learn new skills and knowledge in a variety of practical activities. We are all volunteers there are no paid positions and our purpose is to help the community by making

The shed is the venue and in Kuranda’s case with support of Mareeba Shire Council we have a site with an existing storage shed and we have acquired an industrial shed in a kit form.

We are currently attempting to raise $40,000 from a number of fund raising activities including grant applications, requests for sponsorship and donations.

Why - because to obtain planning permission, complete the concrete slab then build the steel shed, secure a power supply and lighting, toilets and finally to complete the interior workshop/ training room is going to cost an estimated $80,000. Mareeba Shire Council has generously offered in-kind support to match our fund raising efforts dollar for dollar so if you can help us one dollar becomes two dollars and $40,000 becomes $80,000.

Cinematic treat for wildlife fans One of the Tablelands most famous residents is Stanley Breeden, wildlife photographer, cinematographer and author of many books.

Stanley has won two Emmy’s for his film work and numerous other prizes for writing and photography and this Thursday locals will be treated to a free presentation of his work at the Malanda Hotel introduced by Stan himself.

Stan’s one hour National Geographic Special the Land of the Tiger was shown on PBS and became the highest rated program on PBS ever and won an Emmy for cinematography.

Stan is also extremely well regarded for his exceptional writing including the brilliant Visions of a Rainforest that features the wet tropics region. His volume on Kakadu: Looking after the Country the Gagudju Way and his exceptional book on Uluru-Kata Tjuta: Looking After the Country the Anangu Way. More recently Stan has produced a series of extremely close up nature photography books with Kaisa Breeden all published by Fremantle Press including the outstanding Rainforest Country. In addition to his many wildlife books Stan has also written five children’s books. Perhaps his best known work has been his films made in India with Belinda Wright.

Birds of the Indian Monsoon was made over the course of a year at the Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary in northern India, not far from the Taj Mahal.

The film highlights the spectacles of breeding storks and cranes, numerous ducks and geese and the changing conditions of a full year. The onset of the monsoon and the changes triggered highlight the different

“Taken on a recent trip to Japan to visit the Snow Monkeys near Nagano at the Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park. Albeit, we were at the tail end of the season for the snow, there were still plenty of them around coming down from the mountain ranges to enjoy the hot springs and get their afternoon treats from the park keepers. It was still rather cool and this little one was happy to be in the embrace of their mother as they sat quietly on the sun drenched rocks, soaking up that warmth. They were not phased at all by all the passers by, being all too nonchalant while sitting still for a candid shot. What is amazing is how their eyes show the same expression of curiosity as we do. What ever is it that must be going through their minds?

EIGHTY-six year old Selfie Xhafer says it is determination and hard work that keep her stunning garden immaculate and blooming all year round.

The great grandmother spends up to five hours a day tending to the plants, weeding and trimming the edges of the lawn – with very little help, and the results have been proven again this year as she took out the Champion Garden in the annual Mareeba Rodeo Garden Competition.

“It is what makes me happy,” said Selfie whose husband built her home on Blacks Road, Ma-

reeba where she has lived all of her adult life.

“It gives me a purpose to get up in the morning. I love it.”

Selfie is no stranger to trophies and ribbons from the garden comp – she enters most years and has always been awarded a prize of some sort. This year, along with the Champion Garden title, she also won the ‘Front Garden including Footpath’ section and the ‘Seniors Garden House’ award, as well as an induction into the Hall of Fame, along with fellow gardener Millie Bernardi.

The annual competition is enjoyed by all local green thumbs including the schools and Mareeba Police Station, which get involved to show off their achievements.

Helicopter patrols across North and Far North Queensland over the coming weeks will help Powerlink Queensland maintain the reliability and safety of its electricity network.

Patrols will take place during July and August (weather permitting) across the Mareeba, Walkamin, Ravenshoe areas where Powerlink’s network is located.

Powerlink Chief Executive Merryn York said the inspections were essential to Powerlink’s ongoing maintenance program.

“Our aim is to be as quick and non-disruptive as we can when completing these pa-

trols,” Ms York said.

“We want to minimise any potential disturbance to local residents near Powerlink’s transmission lines while this essential work is carried out.

We appreciate their cooperation and patience.”

Helicopter patrols are an important, efficient and cost-effective way of identifying vegetation encroachments along transmission line easements and checking infrastructure for any maintenance issues.

Ms York said during the inspections the helicopter pilot would endeavour to maintain the maximum distance practically possible from houses, livestock and crops.

Bumper crowds made their way to Mareeba Turf Club last Wednesday to celebrate NAIDOC Week (July 8-15).

This year’s theme – Because of Her We Can – celebrates the essential role that women have played and continue to play as active and significant role models in the community.

Mareeba was home to one of many events held across Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

“It’s a multi-agency co-ordi-

nated event. It’s PCYC Mareeba, Mareeba Community Centre, QITE, Mulungu and Mareeba Shire Council,” said sergeant Mary-Anne West, Mareeba’s PCYC branch manager.

“Being in Mareeba and being a youth organisation, we have a lot of indigenous kids coming to our activities and programs. Our drop in centre every Wednesday night is 99 per cent indigenous young people.”

For the first time the event was held at the Turf Club and crowds were up on last year by more than a few hundred.

Fun activities such as games, face painting and a bouncy castle were on offer for free, as well

as entertainment from aboriginal dancers and a sausage sizzle.

Sgt West said it was important to celebrate the indigenous cultures and spoke to the crowd about being a woman in a male dominated industry.

“Today is about highlighting aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and awareness.

It’s really important,” she said.

“The theme ‘Because of Her We Can’ – some of the young girls ask me why I became a police officer. I think it would be great to have more indigenous females join the police, especially if they were from Mareeba.

If I can be a role model I think that’s fantastic.”

Soccer kids get a taste of World Cup

Local kids took the opportunity to experience World Cup fever over the school holidays as part of a free even run by Mareeba United Football Club.

Bulls’ youth and ladies end weekend on a high The Mareeba Bulls youth and ladies sides both enjoyed big wins over the JCU Strikers on Saturday in Mareeba, while the clubs mens sides enjoyed the bye for the Mareeba Rodeo.

The clubs youth boys continued their recent run of good form with a comprehensive 7-1 drubbing over the Strikers, with Leon Peressini and Dylan Cummings leading the way for the U18 side.

serve having the bye, the club was able to field all its under 18 stars including Haydon Russo and Iasiah Goncalves in a strong line up and the boys did not disappoint, racing out to a 4-0 lead at halftime. The Osbourne twins, Brandon and Layton, were again strong as well as Serg Battistin in the Bulls defence.

The win now puts the Mareeba youth side sitting clear second in the FNQ premier youth com-

petition.

The clubs ladies side continued their great form with a strong 2-1 over the JCU Strikers.

Striker Jeannae Kalinau scored two and it was arguably the girls strongest team performance of the season which saw the ladies take away all three points and open up a four point gap between fourth and fifth.

All grades have a bye this weekend.

The Mareeba United Football Club hosted a successful mock World Cup day last week with close to 60 kids turning out to take part in the fun day of football and a chance to follow in their heroes footsteps from Russia 2018.

The 2018 World Cup gala day was open to all kids, male and female from ages six to 16, to just come along and join in the fun. It was free and anyone could participate, the gala day was part of the Get Going Clubs the club was successful in obtaining to give kids the opportunity to play the world game and get into the world cup fever.

The Queensland Government provided $7,220 to Mareeba United Football Club Inc to purchase $4020 of equipment

including goals, bibs, cones and train volunteers in match play to support football at Mareeba to enable Queenslanders to participate in sport and recreation activities.’

MUFC Gala Day organiser Alex Srhoj said the day is all about fun and getting kids involved in the game and participating, “It was a great opportunity for kids to participate and have some school holiday fun and get into the world cup spirit” Srhoj stated.

The kids picked their countries with France, Croatia and Australia the favourites and Croatia was the most successful country of the day taking out two age brackets, while the Aussies won the U10-11 age bracket.

Roosters lose first match in 10 games The Atherton Roosters ten match winning streak has ended following Saturday nights 30-18 loss to the Mossman Sharks at the Mossman Showground.

The loss also sees the Roosters surrender their top of the table spot and drop to second place one point behind new ladder leaders Cairns Brothers.

On Saturday at Mossman, the Roosters lacked the energy that has been their trade mark

this season and allowed the Sharks to a six tries to three victory.

After leading 12-10 at half time, the Roosters went further ahead 18-10 early in the second session. But it was a more determined Sharks outfit who finished with four unanswered tries in the final 20 minutes.

Mareeba bull rider the Junior Champ

There can be nothing quite like riding a bull in front of thousands of people in your home town and for 17-year-old Wyatt Milgate, this year’s Mareeba Rodeo was even more exciting after he won the Junior Bullriding division.

Wyatt spends most weekends competing at rodeos across the State but says his home town

event is one of his favourite.

“The atmosphere and hype/ excitement leading up to the event is unmatched,” he said.

“Riding in front of a large crowd with other local friends watching is a great feeling and opportunity.”

Wyatt rode in three events over the weekend - the Junior Bull, Novice bull and Junior bull in the State of Origin competing for Queensland.

He won the Junior Bull with

73 points, placed second in the Novice Bull, and made another 73 point ride in the State of Origin to earn two points in contributing towards Queensland’s win over NSW. “Each ride was challenging, especially in the Origin considering the pressure of trying to not let your team down,” said Wyatt.

This is Wyatt’s last year of Junior Bull rides, moving up a level when he turns 18 in January. The new year also marks his

graduation from High School with an apprenticeship on the cards as well as a stint in the US for some international bull riding experience.

In the meantime Wyatt hopes to take out some more Junior Bullriding titles in his last year at that level whilst preparing for the Open Men’s Division next year.

This weekend he’ll be found riding at Charters Towers and preparing for the rest of the Great Northern Bull Riding Series.

Victory for U13s

A 2-1 victory for Atherton U13’s against Brisbane (2) gave them an impressive third place finish at last weeks Mackay State Hockey Championships.

The game against Brisbane’s second team was the play off between 3rd and 4th and Atherton U13 played a fantastic game to come away with a win and overall 3rd place in the 2nd division.

An excellent achievement for a team who have never before competed at a state championship.

Team Manager Dorcas Heap said she was immensely proud of the team, who all stepped up to play at a much higher level of Hockey.

“Whilst all players put 100 per cent effort into the seven games played over the weekend, it was outstanding performances that saw Max Williams the top goal scorer of the team with an impressive eight goals and goalkeeper Seth Stein instrumental in keeping opposition goals to an absolute minimum said Manager Dorcas.”

The U13 team that competed in Mackay was made up from the Atherton U16 and U12 teams that compete locally every Saturday at Loder Park in Atherton.

In addition there is an U16 Tomahawks team that compete on Friday evenings in Cairns.

Atherton Tableland Hockey is always keen to welcome new players both experienced and those new to Hockey.
