Mareeba Turf Club committee members have had to defend themselves over allegations they have been killing wallabies at the Fenwick Street track after a spate of deaths on the grounds.

knowing the pests have been causing problems for the club for months.

“We want to assure the public that the Turf Club has taken no action whatsoever, we were letting them settle in once the fence was there and then we

were going to drive them out,” he said.

“I don’t even know anyone that’s got a gun and why would we do that and bring all the attention to ourselves?”

The wallabies have been plaguing the turf club grounds

in their hundreds – last month causing the cancellation of the popular Mareeba Annuals race meet after the pests had destroyed the track digging for food.

But a week after the event was due to take place, a pro-

Mareeba man conquers all at Invictus Games

A Mareeba man who turned to sport as a way to combat mental health issues he developed after serving in Timor as a soldier, has just returned from the Invictus Games in Canada where he represented Australia in five different events.

The 38 year old, who now lives in Cairns, was one of just a handful of Aussies selected to take part in the games which was created by Prince Harry, in which wounded, injured or sick armed services personnel and their associated veterans take part in sports including wheelchair basketball, sitting volleyball, and indoor rowing.

For Graeme Marshall the competition became a lifeline during a difficult time of his life.

After joining the army in 1998 as an Aircraft Technician, he then served in Timor Leste in 2007. He now sufferers from depression, panic attacks and an anxiety disorder.

“It’s providing a lot of people the opportunity to find their new selves,” he said of the games.

“It gives them that purpose and meaning again.”

The games were held in Toronto, Canada from September 23-30.

“It was a once in a lifetime opportunity,” he said.

“You learn a lot about yourself and it really puts

a lot of things into perspective. When you’ve people there that are triple amputees doing what they do – it puts a lot of things into perspective.”

Graeme, a dad of three who went to Mareeba State School and Mareeba State High School, had competed in power lifting events prior to the Invictus Games. He was selected as one of 43 ex-servicemen and women to represent Australia at the games where he competed in discus, two shotput events, two indoor rowing events, and powerlifting.

He met Prince Harry in Sydney at the Governor General’s house in the lead up to the games.

“We all got to chat with him – he’s a very down to earth person,” said Graeme.

“He understands the struggle of soldiers and is very aware of it all.”

During the games Graeme and other athletes from around the world stayed together in the same hotel.

Unlike other competitions, he said the camaraderie was strong among them as they were there for one common purpose.

“That’s the whole Invictus movement,” he said.

“With the injuries and illnesses that a lot of them have, the biggest thing is just getting to the start line.

Anything after that is the cream on top.”

A study by Australian Institute of Health and Wel-

fare found that ex-servicemen were 14 per cent more likely to take their own life – a shocking reminder during Mental Health Awareness Month.

“Participating in sport has given me the motivation to get up each day, and the road towards Toronto allowed me to train with an all-inclusive, supportive team while working towards my goals,” said Graeme.

When training for three sports and five events, strenuous training and exertion is unavoidable. “To assist my recovery post training I used PainPod – a device that was portable and non invasive, and has allowed me to recover more effectively. It has increased my performance levels in training sessions and allowed me to push harder towards my goals.”

Graeme walked away with 5th place in shotput and 6th place in Indoor Rowing.

He is now in the process of applying for next year’s Invictus Games that will be held in Sydney.

“Having felt the energy from being there, I think being in Sydney will make it a bit more special,” he said.

He is also planning on taking on a mentor role for future games in order to guide the athletes through the emotional turmoil of stepping out in front of such a large crowd to compete.

Knuth lobbies for dam tree removal JOURNALIST Rebecca Wallis

KAP member for Dalrymple Shane Knuth is lobbying the State Government to remove dead trees from Tinaroo Dam to deepen the ski areas.

Mr Knuth will be meeting with the Minister about this issue when in Brisbane for the next sitting of

Parliament.

In the meantime Mr Knuth’s office has spoken with Sunwater who have assured them that they are working on finalising a plan that will allow for the safe removal of obstacles in Tinaroo Dam. “I can confirm that

Sunwater agree that now is the time to act and that reducing the obstacles will increase the usability of the dam,” said Mr Knuth.

“One of the additional benefits of the proposal is that once the obstacles are cleared and the areas are gazetted, the opportunity

to extend the use of the dam during dry periods increases, it will also create the opportunity to host water based events at State and International levels.

“Tinaroo Dam is one of the regions greatest assets, it brings families and tourists into the region and this

creates jobs.

“Dealing with these departments can be frustrating at times, but I can assure you that I am one hundred percent behind this call and will do everything possible to fast track this proposal before the wet.

“It would be great to see the dam at full capacity, but while the dam is at a low level, we must take the opportunity to maximise the use of this asset for the future.”

The dam was at 41 per cent capacity before this week’s wet weather.

Wallabies have plagued Mareeba Turf Club’s track for months.

“It looks like some of them have been shot, but others haven’t got a mark on them,” he said.

“Who would have a hatred on roos to do it? It’s a bloody mystery.”

A nearby resident who overlooks the grounds told Mr Thurlow he gets up through the night if he hears noise but hasn’t seen or heard any gunshots over the past week.

Mr Thurlow has been at the grounds daily moving the carcasses to a hole in the centre of the track which was being covered with dirt on Saturday morning.

“We’re doing the best we can to move them because of the smell for people who live around here,” he said.

“It’s all at our expense but how do you stop it? If they’ve got a gun you don’t want to sit here all night waiting to catch them.”

Local police, the Department of Environment, Heritage and Protection and the RSPCA were all contacted last week and said they are looking into the situation.

Mareeba rock-wallabies are a protected species and the penalty for killing one without a permit is a $10,000 fine per animal killed.

Positive step forward in rates crisis

A group of ratepayers within the Tablelands Regional Council area are breathing a small sigh of relief this week after assurances from the mayor that their concerns are now a top priority for his office.

The Tablelands Rates Action Group also met with an official from the Queensland Valuer-General’s office to discuss the astronomical rises and anomalies in some property valuations within the region – a catalyst for the rate rises.

Mayor Joe Paronella met with the Tablelands Rates Action Group and a representative of the Queensland Valuer-General’s office separately throughout the week to address concerns.

“Council is treating this

matter as a top priority and we are committed to finding a workable solution for ratepayers impacted by the recent rates notices,” Cr Paronella said.

“This is a two stage process whereby we are looking into what can be done in the short term, while we also intend putting in place strategies for the next budget process. This will include a full review of rating methodologies and rating categories.”

Land holders within the TRC shire banded together recently after property valuations conducted by the Queensland Valuer-General saw rates sky rocket for some, while others were reduced.

The rates group that was formed after a public meeting on October 4 sat down with councillors last Wednesday (October 11) to put forward their concerns.

These included questions about how the annual budget is formulated, why rates were not capped and why the land valuations were not averaged over a three year period.

“We were shocked at council’s announcement at the commencement of the meeting that they would not be answering any questions that day,” said a spokesperson for the group.

“The meeting was for council to listen so we talked! We believe that council have acknowledged that there is a serious and urgent issue with the rates that is within their capacity to fix and they

have now given the assurance publically that they are working on this as a priority. We look forward to working with council for a timely outcome to the current rates disaster and continuing discussion with council on the next budget and other issues that impact the TRC agriculture sector and rate payers.”

On Tuesday, October 10 a separate group and councillors got to meet with Brett Bowen the Area Manager North Queensland for the Valuer-General, regarding their valuations.

“We were very pleased that Mr Bowen was able to confirm for council and the

group that it is councils that set rates and councils that have 100 per cent control over rates,” said a spokesperson for the group.

“Thankfully, council have now stopped blaming valuations and the false belief that valuation appeals would have any impact on this rates issue especially in the short term.

“We are aware that there is a fundamental shift in the valuations methodology and background data that was caused by the department’s “Land Audit” and the double counting of water licences under the ‘Webster Principles’.

“This matter will be

pursued at the state level and we will keep TRC appropriately informed and involved in that process.

The ‘Webster Principles’ originate from a legal case in the Condamine and to date, the Valuer General has only applied this new principle to some ground water licences with volumetric allocations in the Condamine and the Tablelands.

“Coupled with the new ‘land audit’ conducted by the dept we believe that there are numerous factors behind the new valuations that must be corrected.

“We will not stop until there is an appropriate so-

lution in place.

“The Tablelands is in year two of a drought declaration with serious water pressure. There are other stressors out there. In the rural sector we know that the bases are loaded and a lot of people are struggling with the sudden stress these rates notices have caused.

We encourage people to keep talking through this time of stress.

A spokesperson for TRC said: “Council will continue to work with the Tablelands Rates Action Group towards a constructive way forward together.”

Work will boost Tolga’s economy TRC has begun a range of works to upgrade and improve Tolga Park as part of the Tolga Railhead Project, a Council initiative designed to provide better facilities for residents and tourists.

The project, which includes funding from the State Government’s Works for Queensland program, aims to make it easier for recreational vehicles to stop in Tolga Park with a view to encouraging more visitation to Tolga by travellers and as a result provide economic benefits to local businesses.

The project has been spearheaded by Cr Bronwyn Voyce in consultation with a number of com-

munity members including representatives from the Tolga Historic Society, Tolga Lions Club, the Rail Trail Advisory Committee and other members of the community.

Mayor Joe Paronella said: “This is a fantastic Council initiative which will boost the attractiveness of Tolga and Kairi for visitors to our region, as well as providing improved park facilities for residents to enjoy”.

Cr Voyce said: “The aims of the project were to invite more people to visit Tolga and surrounding towns as well as enhance the current recreational and historical activities available to residents and visi-

tors alike.”

Included in the project is the development of a 28km scenic cycle loop between Tolga and Kairi as an attractive recreational resource both for locals and tourists, which should also bring more people to businesses in both towns.

“We’re very excited also to be in a position to enable the expansion of the Tolga Historical Society, through the construction of a slab for the subsequent development of a significant building. This will provide a much needed extension to the Tolga Museum to be used in the storage and display of the museum’s extensive collection,” Cr Voyce said.

Community rallies to support family

A young mum from Yungaburra who is fighting for her life for the second time is being given a helping hand this week thanks to her local community.

Louise Kidner, wife to Dion and mum to Isabel 5, Pia, 4 and Myles 1 was recently given the devastating news that her brain tumour had returned after four years and is currently in Cairns Hospital undergoing rehab.

The tight knit community of Yungaburra are rallying around this week to hold a fundraising event on Friday night at the Yungaburra Bowls Club in a bid to raise some money to help her and her family through such a difficult time.

Louise’s health took a turn for the worse on August 15.

“She had a seizure, and because of her history was air lifted to Townsville hospital,” said Sue Poggioli.

“Her brain tumour had returned so she was taken for emergency surgery to remove what they could.

When they went in they found her tumour had come back probably a stage 3/4 and very aggressive. Not long in ICU she started to have a brain bleed and was rushed back in to surgery.

She had a 50/50 chance of making it through the night and she did.”

After responding well initially to the surgery, Louise’s health declined once more and her family

were told to prepare for the worst and say their goodbyes.

“This was heart breaking news and it was decided to bring her kids in to see her for possibly the last time,” said Mrs Poggioli.

“The doctors did not expect her to last the weekend and were giving a very grim picture with no hope.

“But her husband Dion was by her side the whole time, and was certain she was still in there.”

Louise’s strength and determination were underestimated and after 11 days of unconsciousness she opened her eyes and began to communicate with hand squeezing, thumbs up and eventually very quiet talking.

“She is getting better daily but has a long road ahead to be well enough for treatment to begin on her tumour,” said Mrs Poggioli.

“She has been returned to Cairns Hospital to do her rehab so she is closer to her family.”

Mrs Poggioli said the family were struggling under the financial strain of her illness as they relied on the family’s small business as their only income.

“The costs are going to start piling up – rehab, travel for the family, reduced income, extra care for the kids,” she said.

“And the question on when the treatment for the brain tumour begins. Louise's future is uncertain as the tumour is still there and growing but every day is a

Chronic wounds affect almost half a million Australians every day and next week, October 16-20, is Wound Awareness Week.

Management Service was established at Community Health in the Primary Health Care building at the Atherton Hospital in early 2016 to allow the Emergency Department to focus on acute and emergency presentations.

Atherton Hospital Auxiliary, patients who are frail are able to receive wound care more comfortably in this dedicated facility.

“Since it was established, the Atherton Wound Management Service has improved healing times for patients,” said Kelly Pollock, Nurse Unit Manager for Community Health.

A serious risk exists this year for crops and even trees.

Nearly half of our watershed is in the Mitchell River Catchment and the rest is in the Barron and Johnstone River. Two of these rivers are never short of water and it is simply a matter of holding a little bit more of that water back to get reliability and possibly to get some moderate agricultural expansion.

Kids impress with speaking skills PRIMARY school students from across the district put their speaking skills to the test last Tuesday as part of the annual Rotary Junior Speaking Competition.

A four minute speech on the ‘Benefits of Reading’ with some powerful and lasting lines impressed the judges and saw Mareeba State School’s Amelia Morris awarded the 2017 Rotary Junior Speaker of the year. A surprise win for the 12 year old.

A new addition of 2017 was an encouragement award that went to Cassia James from Mt Molloy State School who presented a speech on the Big Red Cart which is a monthly feature at the Mt Molloy markets selling produce and other items made by the students.

Lenore Wyatt said she was always encouraged when listening to the young students.

“They were excellent, all the speeches were so well done and original, a lot of effort was put in by all the students,” said Mrs Wyatt.

“I am very proud of our youth, they were so impressive and I know our future is in good hands.

Each year, grade six students from primary schools across the district are invited to participate in the public speaking event. This year saw six students from Mareeba State School, Mt Molloy State School, St Thomas’s Mareeba and St Anthony’s Dimbulah participate where they each presented a three to five minute talk on a topic of their choice.

As always the judges

had a hard time choosing a winner and were very impressed by the confidence the students showed while delivering their speeches, as well as the range of topics chosen.

Since 1998, hundreds of local students have taken

part in the annual contest which has proven useful to students wanting to gain further confidence in public speaking as they progress to higher education. For most, this was their first time speaking in front of their peers and an audience.

Turbines on route

The first wind turbine blade passing through Kairi last Tuesday morning.

NINE wind turbine blades have now been trucked up from Cairns to Walkamin for the start of the construction of the Mount Emerald Wind Farm and the deliveries will continue daily until May next year.

The first delivery brought much excitement for locals last Tuesday morning as they lined the streets craning to grab a

photo of the much-anticipated arrival.

“There’s been no problems whatsoever with the deliveries so far,” said Community Engagement Facilitator Kim Forde. “At some points along the route the truck has been going about 60-70km an hour so they’re averaging less than a five minute delay coming up the Palmerston and they

communicate along the way and pull over if someone needs to pass. They’re doing a fantastic job.”

The tower that holds the blades has three or four sections each 30m in length and the 120 tonne ‘nacelle’ that holds the generator for the turbine will be trucked up mid-November. By late November the first wind turbine will be erected.

Info centre the best for service THE Kuranda Information Centre has been recognised for outstanding customer service and dubbed the best information hub in Queensland.

The Kuranda Visitor Information Centre was named Overall Winner at the Queensland Information Centre Association Awards as well as winning three more awards for business planning, customer service and marketing.

Mayor Tom Gilmore said the accolade was a credit to

the staff and volunteers at the Centre.

"It's simply wonderful news for the Centre," Cr Gilmore said.

"Many of our volunteers go over and above their duty and it is so pleasing to see their dedication and commitment pay off by receiving these awards."

The Kuranda Information Centre was up against seven other visitor information centres across Queensland that nominated.

"It is certainly a feather

in their cap to be recognised as the best Centre in the State," Cr Gilmore said.

This award backs up the bronze received at the Queensland Tourism Awards in 2016.

The awards were part of the annual Queensland Information Centre Association conference which was held in Redcliffe earlier this month. Focus was given to customer service and introducing the concept of the centre becoming an “inspiration centre”.

Fire season is upon us

Tablelanders have been steadily improving their bush fire survival plans according to Mareeba’s acting fire station officer Jason Ryan.

Over the last five or six years Mr Ryan said he had seen an increase in locals getting more organised in the event of a fire threatening their property, but said more still needs to be done to prevent the devastation of bush fires this season.

“We’ve already had a couple of these high alert days already this season,” he said.

“High temperatures and low humidity makes bush fires a lot more prevalent.”

Mr Ryan said locals need to have a plan in place in the event of a fire threat that includes grabbing medications and informing relatives that you will be heading to them.

“Make sure you have sufficient medication for a few days, which is usually the length of time it takes for the area to be deemed safe to return,” he said.

“Know where you’re going – it might be your family or a friend but make sure it has been arranged in advance.”

Mr Ryan said that social media was helping to play a part in making people aware of a bush fire emergency with regular updates and warnings.

“People are getting more prepared now,” he said.

“A lot more people are making sure their gutters are cleared and lawns are mowed. We’ve seen a gradual improvement over the past five or six years.”

Mr Ryan said that many of the bush fires they attend throughout the season are caused by natural acts such as birds flying into power lines or machinery hitting a rock or by grinding or welding sparks catching nearby grass on fire.

“It’s always good to be very vigilant in those situations and have someone else with you observing what is going on,” he said.

“We understand these jobs have to be done but it pays to plan ahead and get them done during the

cooler months of the year.”

Mr Ryan said that the worst thing someone can do when they’re faced with a bush fire situation is to light another fire to back burn it.

“When this happens we usually end up with two bush fires which really stretches our resources,” he said.

“Wait until we are there to establish the control of the fire before attempting to back burn.”

Locals should also ensure their home is accessible by a fire truck in the event you need assistance.

“Narrow driveways and low hanging trees makes it impossible for us to get through and could mean that we can’t access your property,” he said.

“It doesn’t happen as much here, but if there are 50 homes in a precinct that need assistance then we have to make the difficult decision whether to stay and try and gain access or keep going.”

Tablelands Regional Council mayor Joe Paronella is warning locals to get prepared for the oncoming storm and cyclone season.

“Nobody should be complacent about preparing for a disaster, whether it’s a cyclone, flood or bushfire,’ Cr Paronella said.

“I urge everyone in our community to get ready, because being prepared and informed means you can significantly reduce the impact of a disaster on you, your family, your property and your belongings.

“You need to know what action to take in the event of a disaster and ensure you have prepared an emergency kit and household emergency plan.”

Clearing your yard of debris, having access to information, a battery powered radio, first aid kit and sufficient stores of water, food and medical supplies are all critical actions that will ensure you are prepared to deal with the worst case scenario whether it is a cyclone, bushfire, flood or other unforeseen event.

“You should discuss disaster readiness plans with your family for your home environment and with your colleagues in your work environment.

Talk about your plans with your neighbours, and if you live close to older or more vulnerable people check to see if they need a helping hand with their preparations.”

“Make sure you’re organised, and do it without delay,” the Mayor said.

This summer, the world watched as natural disasters struck around the world. In South Asia, parts of India, Nepal and Bangladesh are experiencing devastating monsoon rains.

In Mumbai alone, over 1,000 people have been reported killed in the floods.

In the past 3 months, LCIF has approved 20 emergency grants to South Asia, totalling US$125,000. In July, flooding in Japan took lives and destroyed homes.

LCIF awarded a US$100,000 Major Catastrophe Grant to help the community recover.

In August, Hurricane Harvey devastated the Texas coast stretching from the Houston area into Louisiana. During one of the worst natural disasters in American history, thousands of people lost their homes and everything they own.

Some people lost family members.

LCIF immediately awarded a US$100,000 Major Catastrophe Grant to assist in reconstruction efforts. Within two weeks of Hurricane Harvey, Hurricane Irma struck Florida and other areas of the Southeast United States, and destroyed much of the islands in the western Atlantic

Ocean and Caribbean Sea. At the same time, Mexico was hit by its strongest earthquake in 100 years. LCIF has made funds available for two more US$100,000 grants to aid Lions assisting with Hurricane Irma and Mexico's earthquake. Most recently, LCIF awarded a US$100,000 grant to support Puerto Rico hurricane relief and reconstruction in the wake of Hurricane Maria.

The 2017 Tastes of the Tablelands hosted by Atherton Rotary was held on Sunday, October 15 at the Hou Wang Chinese Temple Museum Grounds.

The annual event is an opportunity for local producers of food and drink to showcase their products and prove why the Tablelands is fast becoming a gourmet hub.

The family fun day attracted thousands of locals and visitors who enjoyed not only the food and drink but also entertainment, workshops, cookery demonstrations and competitions.

Classic cars, children’s activities and working artists were also featured on the day, as well as a butchery demonstration, a celebrity cook off and a demo from Cairns Cooking School.

Edible delights included locally grown coffee, tropical wines, ice creams, fresh fruit and vegetables.

For the first time in the festival’s history a gourmet dining experience was held the night before as a prelude to the following day’s events.

Ticket holders got to celebate both the amazing array of foods produced locally and the Rotary Club of Atherton’s 70th birthday under a marquee next to the Hou Wang Chinese Temple.

The LAND Lime growers left disappointed

Tableland lime growers are disappointed after federal biosecurity members met with them in Mareeba last week over the issue of importing Tahitian limes from five new Pacific nations.

Two members of the plant systems division travelled from Canberra to meet with a select group of growers to hear their concerns after a submission was sent arguing the idea of importation.

“It was disappointing because I think they’ve already decided what they’re going to do,” said Mutchilba lime grower Karen Muccignat.

“It was fantastic that they came up from Canberra to meet with us and they did hear our concerns which we reiterated, but I think they’ve made a decision and that’s it.”

Lime growers in the region got together earlier in the year to send a submission to the Federal Department of Agriculture in response to their ‘Draft review of biosecurity import requirements for Tahitian limes from the Cook Islands, Samoa, Niue, Tonga and Vanuatu’.

But apart from the concern that the importation will put them out of business, the growers are also worried about the spread of detrimental diseases.

The citrus industry is

worth more than $31million on the Tablelands alone.

“After battling the papaya fruit fly and citrus canker, the last thing our farmers need is yet another threat to our industry,” said Mrs Muccignat.

The biggest concern is the lack of biosecurity protocols in place across any of the listed countries, leaving the local industry vulnerable.

The submission, sent on behalf of the Mareeba District Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association, explained that although only three pests were identified as requiring risk management measures – there were in fact over 80 pests and diseases related to

limes listed in the overall review, raising additional concerns that these could spread to other citrus such as pineapples, mangoes and grape crops.

But despite their best efforts, local growers are now facing the fact that they will likely be competing with the imported fruit and are instead taking steps to minimise the impact.

“They’re now taking a reactive approach and talking about limiting the damage if it happens,” said Mrs Muccignat of the federal department.

“We’re asking if it goes ahead, can an Australian representative go over there and check the packing etc to ensure there are

no pests.

“Citrus canker wiped out the farms here and it is known to be in Fiji which is smack bang in the middle of these countries.

“Who is going to be liable if something comes into this country?”

ciation Joe Moro attended the meeting and said that a decision on the importation would be made in the next few months.

“They’re in the business part of the process now and came here to go through all of the issues that we put in the submission,” he said.

“They took it on board and the application is now

in to be assessed.

“Our preference is that it doesn’t go ahead but we made it clear that if it’s going to be happening, it’s with the most stringent of conditions in place.”

Mr Moro said that the growers are concerned that a number of pests may have a significant impact on their livelihoods.

Participation in the evaluation is voluntary but we are urging growers and members of the community to seize the opportunity to have their say.”

Ms Evans said the community plays an important role in minimising the risk

of spread of Panama disease in the region.

“The successful management of Panama disease tropical race 4 involves participation not only from industry, but the wider community also.

“By not entering banana farms without permission and respecting on-farm biosecurity procedures, the community is helping to protect banana growers in the region from this devastating disease.”

4 skinless boneless chicken breasts 1/4 tsp salt 1/4 tsp ground black pepper 1 tbsp olive oil 1 cup chicken broth 1 tbsp fresh lime juice

1. Preheat oven to 190°C. 2. Sprinkle each chicken breast with salt and pepper.

3. In a large ovenproof skillet, heat the oil over medium-high heat. Add the chicken and cook for 6-7 minutes, turning once. You want the chicken nice and browned on the outside. (It doesn’t have to be cooked all the way through yet.)

Set chicken on a plate and cover tightly with foil.

4. Remove skillet from heat and add the broth, lime juice, onion, cilantro, and red pepper. Return to heat. Cook and stir to scrape up the browned bits from the bottom of the skillet. Bring to a boil. Allow to boil gently, uncovered, for 10 minutes or until the liquid is reduced to around 1/4 cup. Reduce heat to medium-low, then add the cream and butter. Stir until butter has melted.

5. Add chicken to the sauce and place the skillet in the preheated oven. Bake uncovered until the chicken is completely cooked through, about 5-10 minutes.

Serve chicken with sauce spooned on top and any of the listed optional garnishes.

Mums take on Relay for Life

Seven Malanda mums are taking on the Relay for Life challenge with kids in tow.

A local group of mums are taking to the track at Tablelands Relay For Life, to support the fight against cancer.

Seven Malanda women will step out with their children at the event – held October 28 at Atherton Showgrounds – as part of the ‘Malanda Mummies and Minis’ team.

The event raises awareness and support for Cancer Council Queensland’s vital work in research, prevention programs and support services.

Team captain Janine Rielly said she was motivated to create a team this year, in honour of two children in her community who had been diagnosed with cancer.

“I’ve met several families whose children are going through cancer, or are in remission, and I wanted to do something to support them,” Ms Rielly said.

“I reached out to some like-minded mums and asked them and their kids to get involved, because I don’t think we need to shield our children from cancer.

“They see people in the community who are affected in way one way or another, and that includes children, so we should be showing them how they can support their peers, be healthy and be hopeful.”

Ms Rielly said everyone in her team was really looking forward to participating in Tablelands Relay

Another big home crowd turned out for the 1st Grade home game against Barron River on Saturday. Batting first, Atherton looked to be in trouble at 4-42, before Pete Sceresini and Brendan Nasser lifted the tempo to double the score in a run-a-ball partnership.

A strong batting line-up saw the team post a competitive 192.

Paul Nasser and Dan Parnell opened the bowling attack with a tidy spell to have the visitors 3-28 off 10 overs, Hadyn Steele and Tom Boorman chipped in with a wicket each and Michael Salerno

cleaned up the remaining wickets in a clever display taking 5-9 to close the match.

Blue Angels strong display on the court Blue Angels senior men’s side are certain semi-finalists following their 76 to 64 win over Barras in last week’s round of the Mareeba Basketball competition.

A feature of this encounter was the outstanding performance by Jeremy McKay for Blue Angels. His attacking play was superb, scoring a remarkable 30 points from accurate 3 pointer attempts and also a number of point from drives to the basket. He received good support from Ricaydon Wason and Jerome Gully.

36 at that stage. However, Blue Angels took control of the game during the third quarter and established a handy 19 point lead over Barras.

Although the Barras side played strongly during the last quarter, the good three quarters advantage held by Blue Angels proved too great for Barras to overcome.

Tom Harvey and Daniel Ruggeri were excellent contributors for Barras. While young Zayd Myrteza had many good moments as well as scoring 15 points from long outside shots.

Red Devils are also semi-final bound after a

convincing 64 to 34 win over Ciggy Butts. Another men’s side through to next week’s final series is Stingrays, winning on a forfeit from Spare Parts.

The results of this Thursdays last fixture round will decide the remaining semi-final spot.

A win by either Ciggy Butts, Barras or Spare Parts may see them progress to the pay offs.

Shockers ladies combination outplayed Gigglers in the last quarter to defeat them by 33 to 23.

No doubt a win in this week’s concluding fixture round must give the winners some confidence going into the semi’s.

WITH mixed results in close matches, Mareeba cricket had a busy weekend with games across the region.

On Saturday the under 12’s team travelled to Morow Park, Tolga to take on Atherton 2. Atherton batted first and were 6/224 after 27 overs, leaving Mareeba a big total to chase.

Mareeba reached the score in the 25th over with 3 wickets remaining and ended at 6/235, giving Mareeba the win.

Best bowlers were Ben Miles 2/13 after 3 overs,

Bryce Fincham 0/6 after 3 overs with best batters going to Jace Cureton on 40 retired not out and Rylan Srhoj with 35.

On Sunday the Mareeba third grade side faced Port douglas at home. Winning the toss and choosing to bat. Mareeba lost an early wicket then Tyson Brown (12) and Luke Russo (14) got a partnership started before a major collapse.

The last pair, Jimmy Raines and Trevor Spry, batted for 10 overs to keep Port out in the field.

Mareeba finished with a

total 10/61. An early wicket to Nick Turner was the only hiccup for Port Douglas before chasing down the total.

Mareeba’s second division side travelled to Tully to take on the top placed team going down in a close match.

Mareeba ended the day 9 for 141, with Tully winning on 9 for 142 with 2 balls to spare.

Trevor Roy top scored with 38 and Paul Moss made 31, while Toby Kershaw was 27 not out.

Players honoured at awards night

Mareeba United Football Club (MUFC) held their 2017 presentation night at the clubhouse on Saturday night.

Players from the premiers, reserves second divisions, ladies and juniors were all honoured with awards for their hard work and dedication throughout the year.

Steven Cater won the most awards including top goal scorer, player’s player and player of the year.

While Celie Henderson won player’s player and player of the year.

Former Coach and player, the late Joe Di Pasquale, was inducted into the MUFC “Hall of Fame”, with his brother Phillip, sister Lea, son Duilio and daughter Daniela accepting the award.

The night was also an occasion to acknowledge all the volunteers for their work behind the scenes.

Being his last season as premier mens coach, Alex Srhoj was also honoured with special tributes acknowledging his dedication over the years at the helm.

Matt Wakefield will coach the Gators in 2018.

Chelsea Manitta was awarded the female rising star of the year and Serg Battistin and Tyler Ius were named joint junior players of the year.

New Gladiators coach for 2018 The Mareeba Gladiators are pleased to announce that Matt Wakefield will be the Head Coach and Development Officer in 2018.

Wakefield comes to the club with a wide range of experience in rugby league throughout NSW and QLD. The Backrower has spent time with clubs such as Redcliffe Dolphins and the Newton Jets. He has also played in multiple rep teams throughout coun-

try NSW on numerous occasions throughout his career.

Matt, who was in town last weekend, didn’t waste much time meeting with multiple players from the 2017 season and is very confident the A Grade team will be a force again in 2018.

President Andrew Foster said we are very excited about what Matt will bring to the club next season.

“He is very enthusias-

tic and wants to lead by example on the field as player coach in A Grade,” said Mr Foster.

Matt is also very passionate about junior development and is really looking forward to gaining experience in that department throughout the year.

The club is very excited by the signing of Wakefield and said pre-season training will be looking to commence mid November with all current and new players are welcome.
