Schools unite for chess tournament By Justin Fris

BOTH St Thomas’s Parish School and St Stephen’s Catholic College have returned from a successful showing at the Far North Queensland Interschool Chess Championships. St Thomas’s – under the tutorage of Michael Harnischfeger – accrued great success with their selected Premier League table during the titles. With Nicholas Fogale, James Steele, Harry Heath and Dante Cadorin representing their school with distinction, the boys won 21 out of a possible 28 matches. This result allowed them to finish 2nd overall in the championships – if they had of won only one more game, they would have

been outright champions. A notable performer for St Thomas’s during the carnival was Fogale, who went a complete 7 for 7 and reaffirmed his mantle of being the number one chess player for his age in the Far North. Harnischfeger has a unique and remarkable coaching style. While in matches with his students during lessons, he will actively point out tips and possible match scenarios – something which helps their overall progression. St Stephen’s students (Tom Gargan, Steven Harnischfeger, Sudhanshu Pathania and Hunter Liebold) performed with distinction in their division, only missing out on first place by 2.5 points.

AS the agenda items at last Thursday morning’s Tablelands Regional Council meeting were slowly whittled away, a delicate yet pressing hum of noise could be heard outside the door. With the clock ticking closer to the magical 10am mark for morning tea, you could sense something extraordinary was about to happen. Sure enough, once the rugged wooden doors were opened, scores of dedicated gardening enthusiasts poured into the room. With seats at an absolute premium to watch the presentation of the 2015 Tablelands Regional Council Garden Awards, it was no surprise to witness the elation of each award winner. TRC Mayor Rosa Lee Long began the presentation by announcing that eight different categories had been judged – along with a new competition for entrants under the age of 17. Malanda-based entrant Karen Paterson was

crowned as ‘Champion Garden’ entrant, along with claiming victory in the ‘Rural’ category. As part of Ms Paterson’s winnings, she received a $100 cash prize and a special trophy; with both awards well received. Ladies from the Ravenshoe Garden Club were also all smiles, after narrowly defeating the Millaa Millaa Garden Club in the best ‘Community Garden’ category. But without question, the star of the show was four year old Dexter Geres, who was victorious in the ‘U/17’ competition, for his fantastic vegetable garden and watchful scarecrow. Cr Shaaron Linwood (who assisted in driving competition judge Len Curtis to the displays) said the standard of entrants were exceptional. “I’m glad I wasn’t judging it,” she said. “The quality of the entrants was exceptional and I know Len had a very difficult job. I’m thrilled that so many people have such a passion for gardening and I’m absolutely stoked for our young entrant, Dexter.”

Small miners hit by levy

By Justin Fris

SMALL miners are less than thrilled about having to fork out more than $1400 per year as part of the state government-based ‘Emergency Management Rescue and Fire Levy’. Initially introduced by the Newman (LNP) Government in 2013 as a method for providing additional support for such services, local councils are now being required to collect the money on the state government’s behalf. Annette Haydon, who resides in Innot Hot Springs, is concerned that some small miners may have had their mining leases unfairly classified. “Most small miners only have an average of two or three workers at any one time and some leases are only 5 hectares,” she said. “Large properties with thousands of hectares only pay $96.40 each year. We have obviously been put in a category with large mines like Rio Tinto. “We pay the ‘General Rates Category E mining lease/claim’ which is normal; but the levy fee from state government is exorbitant. “At any one time only one lease is being worked and any other leases are vacant and left in reserve for future workings.

“The Emergency Management Levy on land with no buildings or not working is classed as vacant land - and charged accordingly. Why we are not charged as per other property owners for vacant land on these vacant un-worked mining leases? “Each year, small miners pay rates and are also hit with annual fees from the Department of Environment, heritage protection, Native Title compensation payments, mining tenement rents, royalties on minerals sold, taxes and compensation to the graziers.” Federal Liberal candidate for Kennedy Noeline Ikin said she had been working closely with both the North Qld Miners Association and small miners over the past two years on the levy issue. “It’s an issue that needs to be fixed,” she said. “The bureaucrats in Brisbane are just unable to get their heads around it.” Another concerned about the levy is local small miner Graham Steine, who last week met with Tablelands Regional Council Mayor Rosa Lee Long to discuss the matter. Mr Steine also raised concerns about the potential closure of the Department of Natural Resources and Mines office in Mareeba. “I’m not computer-literate and the girls

in that office are an absolute godsend,” he said. “I’m regularly able to walk in there and they are able to talk and assist me. “I’d have no way of being able to get to Townsville if this office was relocated.” Mayor Lee Long said she had followed up her correspondence with Mr Steine after their meeting, with many of his concerns able to be successfully

addressed. She added that some small miners (including Mr Steine) have several lease plots across several councils and that not all councils may have small miners in the correct levy category. Both personally and from a TRC perspective, Mayor Lee Long supports the Department of Natural Resources and Mines to remain on the Table-

Barra Bash cancelled The ‘Barra Bash’, one of the state’s most popular fishing tournaments has been called off this year due to the lack of volunteers. Barra Bash publicity officer John Mondora said: “We just don’t have the manpower to help put the event together. “This is one of the biggest fishing tournaments in the state. Lake Tinaroo is the playground of the Atherton Tablelands and it brings a lot of visitors through the area and contributes significantly economically to the area as well. “It would be detrimental to the region if this event was to fold up for good. There are huge num-

bers of fisher people on the Tablelands - some would need to just give some of their time to continue the good work past volunteers have put in. “We quite simply ran out of time to stage this year’s competition.” The Tableland Fish Stocking Society will be running an open day on December 5 - releasing 200-300 Barramundi into Tinaroo Dam. The open day will be held at the hatchery in Grove Street from 10am. If you are keen to help out with next year’s ‘Barra Bash’, contact Jennifer Mondora on 4056 2068. Newcomers are welcome to participate.

TRC opposes APA theatre heritage listing application By Justin Fris

Giuliano Cordenos presents Brian Ottewill winner of the Mareeba Multicultural festival raffle with his first prize, $2000 worth of Travel from Travel Experience Mareeba.

Festival announces Raffle winners

The Mareeba Multicultural Festival committee would like to inform the public that the prize winners for this year’s raffle drawn at the festival on Saturday August 29 were: 1st prize Brian Ottewill, 2nd prize F. Corba and 3rd prize Ken Wallace. The committee would like to thank

everyone for their participation at the festival and look forward to many more entrants filing in next year. The committee would also like to hear from anyone in the region who is of Romanian heritage to get in touch with them by calling Giuliano Cordenos on 0418 700 095.S

TABLELANDS Regional Councillors maintained their opposition for the Atherton Performing Arts igloo becoming a heritage listed building last Thursday. After receiving word from the Queensland Heritage Council that the APA had formally made an application for the building to be heritage listed, the TRC was given a formal invitation to give an oral presentation on the matter in Brisbane on October 9. Despite officers recommending that councillors decline the offer to present, councillors voted against their suggestion – and will opt to present via teleconference. Cr Rod Marti began the dialogue by encouraging Council to remain consistent with the current

resolution on the issue. “I don’t support the recommendation,” he said. “We’ve got an existing resolution on the board opposing the heritage listing, so I think we should be taking this opportunity to verbally express our concern about this issue by teleconference. “If this proceeds, the difficulties the APA will have in doing anything to that building with a heritage listing; I don’t think they have any idea of what they have actually done.” Possible relocation of the igloo again surfaced amongst the councillors, with the various intrinsic elements of a heritage listing application explained by TRC GMRegional Planning, Dean Davidson. “There is considerable work re-

quired when given a heritage listing,” he said. “As you have to go through processes – where it gets assessed and approved whether work can be done or not. “We believe we have put up a strong case to the department for it not to be heritage listed; that later was sent through.” APA president Jacqui Stephens said the APA was happy with their current location, but wouldn’t object to a future relocation; providing it was close by. “If the QHC wish to relocate our igloo to another place close by, we have no objection – although we are happy with our current location,” she said. “Providing our history wasn’t jeopardised and that there were funds available to do it. At the moment, we don’t see how it is feasible.”

Magical evening for MDFVGA representatives By Justin Fris

FRUIT and vegetable growers across the Mareeba district were in fine form at last Friday evening’s Mareeba District Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association gala dinner, which was held at the Mareeba International Club. In what has been a trying year in some ways for local growers, it was refreshing to see plenty of smiles and yarns shared. With the room filled to absolute capacity, many sensed they were in good company. Notable stakeholders across all three tiers (local, state and federal) took their places at tables and spent time chatting with those who work in an entirely different coalface. Indispensable MDFVGA president Joe Moro did a sterling job as chair for the evening – but even he could have not foretold what would occur later in the evening. With years of dedicated service and a cheery personality that has never wavered, Mr Moro was formally awarded life membership of the MDFVGA. “For me, it is really humbling,” he said. “I didn’t expect it – I just think it is nice that the committee thought about it for me; but I think a lot of things that you do, it’s all about a team effort.” The evening marked a special evening for the Nastasi family, with mango pioneer Bruce Nastasi formally recognised for his efforts to the industry.

Survived by his loving wife Kaye and children, Bruce was a source of inspiration and hope for many local growers – and will never be forgotten. It was also a watershed evening for Mark Reppel, who was crowned the ‘Charlie Nastasi Farmer of the Year’ award. After being initially informed that his banana farm had tested positive for Panama Tropical Race 4 disease, Mr Reppel faced a massive weight on his business – for both family and his loyal workforce. However several weeks later, he received a knock on the door from biosecurity officials informing him that the results had been a false positive; and he would be cleared to resume business. Despite heading a very quality field of finalists, Mr Reppel said his focus was always on helping others impacted by the situation – especially his workers. “Tonight was a shock to be honest,” he said. “When I saw the company that I was in – I actually penned a few of those to win. I’ll gladly accept and I’m very proud. “It was devastating to start with. Then we decided that there were a few question marks about our results and we had some help from some scientists. So we decided to pursue it;

and thank god we were cleared. “(My staff) are all local people – they pay rent, buy groceries and they are all part of what we do. They are very important.” Additionally, over $12,000 was raised for a variety of chariable causes on the night. A fruit auction was lively participated in across the room, with others trying their luck at guessing the weight of a giant pumpkin.

KP mango competition now open for local growers By Justin Fris

AFTER a positive response from last year, Lui Garozzo from Total Food Network has teamed up with The Express Newspaper and the MDFVGA for the 2015 KP mango competition. Some of the finest mangos are grown right here on the Tablelands – with local growers keen to claim that their mangos are the biggest. The Express Newspaper’s managing editor Carl Portella told growers at the MDFVGA dinner that the competition was open for the KP mango variety only. “It is a great pleasure to announce tonight that Total Food Network from Cairns, Lui Garozzo, has joined us as major sponsor of the KP mango competition,” he said. “The competition will kick off from this evening. We invite any farmers, backyard mango growers – to look out for their biggest mango.” MDFVGA president Joe Moro said he

THE inaugural Casali’s Down Syndrome Awareness Drive to raise funds and awareness of Down Syndrome, will be held from Saturday, October 3 to Sunday, October 4, 2015. RTV’s and 4x4’s will travel the CREB Track, staying at the Lions Den Hotel on the Saturday night. Raising awareness for Down Syndrome is a cause close to Casali’s manager, Alex Arena’s heart. His Grandson Milan was diagnosed with Down Syndrome three days after he was born in 2012. Down Syndrome is a chromosomal anomaly resulting in an additional full or partial copy of chromosome 21. Although we know how Down Syndrome occurs, we do not yet know why it happens. Down Syndrome occurs at conception, across all ethnic and social groups and to parents of all ages. Everyone is welcome and all makes and models can take part. Casali’s will supply participants with a Road Corridor Permit, but all RTV’s must be conditionally registered. Keith Reynolds has kindly donated the use of his property on Upper Daintree Road for participants to park their vehicles or trailers that are carrying their RTV's or 4x4 to the event. Camping and Accommodation is available at the Lions Den Hotel and can be booked directly via emailing info@lionsdenhotel.net or phoning 4060 3911. Casali’s are hoping to make this drive an annual event. Registration is $25 per person and all money raised will be donated to the Down Syndrome Association of Queensland. was eagerly anticipating the competition and gave some insight into what an ideal KP mango should include. “I think it’s a good way to promote the industry locally and get a bit of passion intro the community about a very iconic part of the Tablelands,” he said. “A lot of people say that the KP is the best easting or tasting mango in Australia, if not the world. KP’s have a very unique taste – sweetness, firmness and juiciness are all part of it.” Make sure you keep up to date with The Express in coming weeks, as entrants will commence sending in their finest mangos. Mr Moro tipped that potentially the 2kg barrier could be reached in this year’s competition, such is fierce competiveness amongst growers. club news With Mareeba Lions Club... Mareeba Lions recently assisted the Lioness Club with the annual Pink Ribbon Garden Party. The event was held for the first time at the Mareeba Turf Club after many years of being held in the garden of John and Delsi Delai. A wonderful afternoon was enjoyed by all with music provided by the Atherton Hot Shots band. Local singing talent Kiara Cabassi performed a segment of the beautiful songs which were appreciated by the large crowd. Kiara’s performing “That’s Amore” in Italian was particularly enjoyed by the Italian ladies in the audience.

‘Kick in the guts’ for regional Queensland which include Gregory, Warrago, Cook, Mt Isa and Dalrymple all have rural towns who are struggling,” Mr Katter said. “Many of our constituents, even those within rich mining towns sit on the poverty line.” A recent report entitled ‘Dropping Off The Edge’ indicated almost all of regional Qld is classed as either ‘Disadvantaged’ or ‘Most Disadvantaged’ in terms of income, facilities and overall quality of life. Mr Knuth said any additional impacts to regional electorates could be dire, with regional voices in parliament marginalised as it is. “The Mt Isa electorate is currently the size of France,” he said. “And locally, the seat of Cook is the same size as the state of Victoria.” Mr Knuth explained that during 1986, electorate officials decided to raise the number of MP’s from 82 to 89. “In 2015, we still have 89 MP’s,” he said. “Back in 1986 when this was decided, average electoral role figures were 17,000 – they are now 34,000. “We’ve seen a greater influx of people move into the south-east corner – which in the past has seen regional seats either merged or abolished and put into their region. “We’ll either see bigger regional electorates or some may be abolished – and this may also

STATE cross-benchers Robbie Katter (pictured) and Member for Dalrymple Shane Knuth are aghast at potential changes to regional electorates in Queensland. Among potential changes could be the abolishment of four regional electorates, which would be re-allocated to south-east Queensland. Another possible outcome is an increase of elected state politicians from 89 to 94, which the pair believe is a bad idea. Electoral Commission Queensland (ECQ) conducts re-distribution analysis of state electorates after every three terms of government. Effectively, this process means that occasionally electorates can be extended to include more voters, be reduced in size or even completely abolished. Mr Katter firmly believes that any potential changes to regional electorates will go beyond boundary changes; rural communities will be impacted. “This is about overall regional representation, not just one seat,” Mr Katter said. “Less rural representatives means less people to make a stand and fight for what matters out there - things like ‘Royalties for Regions’, debt reconstruction and infrastructure. “The biggest electorates in Queensland

include coastal seats.” Tablelands Regional Council Mayor Rosa Lee Long – who represented One Nation in the old state seat of Tablelands for three terms – gave some context into the sheer size of representing a regional electorate. The Tablelands seat was abolished during a redistribution review in 2008 – with voters equally divided (in terms of geographical location) into Cook, Hinchenbrook and newly created Dalrymple. “I was one representative for the entire Tablelands,” she said. “The electorate even went down to the outskirts of Innisfail and Palmerston. “I believe this electorate was one of the hardest electorates in regional Qld, as it included every industry except sheep and wheat. “If you look at the current distribution, 70 of the 89 MP’s are located in and around Brisbane. There is not a great deal of voice for regional Queensland.” Member for Cook Billy Gordon was contacted for his opinion on potential changes to regional electorates, given Cook may be impacted greatly in this process. However, he did not provide a response by our print deadline.

Gordon queries Palaszczuk position INDEPENDANT Member for Cook Billy Gordon (pictured) has questioned Palaszczuk Government minister Anthony Lynham over the proposed Sustainable Ports Development Bill. Mr Gordon – who was elected in January this year – said he was keen for the issue to be discussed carefully over time. “This unequivocal proclamation puts a sandbag on a pertinent issue facing a city that is pivotal to the development of North Queensland,” he said. “Look, I understand that the deal struck by the Australian Government with UNESCO makes adding Cairns to the list of ‘priority ports’ is unimaginable, but there has to be a better outcome.

“I respect what Treasurer Curtis Pitt had said, and I trust his legal advice that Ports North will be able to continue to deliver well-scoped and achievable port projects for enhanced trade and tourism opportunities; provided it is within the scope of the current EIS process (which is very broad-ranging), capital dredging for expansion of port facilities can be undertaken at Cairns, based on a responsible, workable plan to beneficially reuse the dredge spoil or dispose of it safely on land. “Cairns Port plays an important role in serving the Cook electorate. Any future modernisation of its facilities should be undertaken in a sustainable manner and as an elected leader, I stand to protect these principles.”

A remarkable life – Annie ‘Naroo’ Bailey By Justin Fris ANNIE Bailey was a person who dedicated her life to help others enjoy and appreciate the special things. It was a life which saw her grow from a young woman in Mareeba to an iconic individual for community togetherness in the town. Born in 1933, Annie Laurie Jennings was brought into the world by her parents John and Ruby. Siblings were plentiful, with Annie having three brothers and seven other sisters. As a child, Annie didn’t have the luxuries of life which are enjoyed by children today. There were no computers, no mobile phones – and for awhile, no electricity was available. This meant the majority of her childhood was set toward looking after her younger siblings – along with learning essential life skills, which included sewing, knitting and even cooking on a slow combustion-based stove. In 1939 at age six, Annie began primary school at Mareeba State Primary School. She lived 5 miles (8.04km) away from the school, so she was required to travel each day by pushbike. Few people may not know this, but during WWII, Mareeba State School was (for a brief period) a makeshift hospital, which students at Mareeba State actually sharing with St Thomas’s

Parish School. School days for Annie would begin at noon and finish at 4pm, a far cry from today’s 9am to 3pm school timetable. Living on the family farm, Annie took a real interest in ‘hands-on’ activities. These included camping, crafts and tying knots. She also came face to face with a passion that would never leave her side – Mareeba’s Girl Guides. The ‘Guide Hut’ facility was also located at the school – with activities held each Saturday afternoon meaning another 10 mile round trip by pushbike. Along with love for her husband (Viv) and own family would blossom in later years, Annie’s love for giving back was almost unmatched. Annie’s children were signed up into several community organisations, including the St John’s Ambulance, Mareeba Swimming Club, the Girl Guides and Scouts. After being asked to assist the Girl Guides in 1975 (while waiting in the car for her children) Annie began a career which would last several decades. Gradually, she would gain several different badges and permits – accruing considerable service and awards from her peers. Around 1990, (after having served 15 years) Annie created the ‘Gumnut Guides’, which were

designed for younger children. She was given the nickname ‘Naroo’ (an indigenous term for ‘bee’ or ‘honey’) – a term which was uniformly embraced by the community. Mareeba Shire Council was well aware of her efforts in the community, with Annie twice being awarded Mareeba’s Australia Day Citizenship award – but for her, involvement was not about accolades.

Along with her appetite for participating in craft-based activities, her generosity for others was equally remarkable. Among many of these acts of generosity, she would specifically grow lettuces for the Mareeba Scouts to use for all hamburgers sold at the Mareeba Rodeo. Despite no longer with us, ‘Naroo’s’ spirit for helping others is something that will never leave Mareeba’s true heart and soul.

Put some spring in your step Spring is officially here! Embrace the new season by spending time de-cluttering your house, your schedule – and your mind. Here’s our top spring-cleaning life tips to help get you started. Declutter your home. Household mess can contribute to stress and clearing out clutter can make life’s burdens feel a little bit lighter. Start by throwing away items you don’t use anymore, like clothes, outdated food, and old furniture. Pay it forward by donating your items to charity.

Rotary Club of Atherton hosts Tastes of the Tablelands as an annual event to draw the agricultural and horticultural communities across the vast and fertile Atherton Tablelands. The event is to encourage Chefs artisan food producers and growers to meet and celebrate the talent and value of their work at a festival which honours their input into our local economy. It’s much more that a market. Tastes of the Tablelands is specifically held at the Chinese Temple grounds in Atherton to invite people into this precinct which was

occupied by the Chinese in the late 1800s It is now owned by the National Trust and to the raise awareness of the Atherton Tablelands heritage we need locals to come and have a look at the temple. You can do this for a gold coin donation while at the festival. The on stage entertainment can be enjoyed from the shady marquee. Watch the chefs cook up a storm from the tired seating. Be inspired by the passion of the people involved. Rotary is working to bring this great community together to celebrate be there and be part of it.

Spruce up your diet. Spring is a great time to boost your fruit and vegetable intake. The warm Far North Queensland climate is a perfect match for light soups, veggie-rich stir-fries and nourishing salads. Get into the habit of meal planning so you can shop in advance and always have the ingredients you need on hand. Exercise. If your exercise goals have waned over winter, now is the time to bring back better habits. The air is warmer, the water is welcoming, and the world is fresh. Enjoy a morning walk or swim, or

try that beach yoga class you’ve always wanted to do. Calm your mind. Set a goal to get rid of unwanted habits, be positive, and start working on the life you want to live. Try meditating for five minutes a day, choose an area of your life that is most out of balance and write down one action to improve it or nourish your brain with an activity you enjoy, like visiting an art gallery or reading a good book. Focus on you. Try not to do too much at once. Plan out your time by making lists and prioritising the things that are most important to you. Allocate more time to doing the things that make you feel healthier and happier. It’s also important to learn how to say ‘no’! A new season is the perfect time to recharge your home, health and happiness – use these five tips to improve your wellbeing this spring! theregion Knuth committed to water MEMBER for Dalrymple Shane Knuth was encouraged by dialogue at last week’s “Rural Crisis Forum” held in Charters Towers. Along with hearing questions raised to him – Mr Knuth outlined his plan to get the ‘Burkedin Water Plan’ endorsed for Dalrymple. Mr Knuth said: “The changes to the ‘Burdekin Water Plan’ will open up huge opportunities for our area,” Mr Knuth said. “While it is yet to be put in place, this plan protects the rights of water users, provides the ability to dealing with future water requirements.” Katter’s Australia Party state cross-benchers have put forward several priorities that they wish to be endorsed by the Palaszczuk Government. With such a slight majority in their favour, all eyes will be on how the Palaszczuk Government meets these issues. “Allowing our farmers and producers access to the water they need is so important,” Mr Knuth said. “For jobs and development in North Queensland we need to free up the Burdekin, one of the largest rivers in Queensland - this is exactly what these amendments will do. “The water resource plan is put in place to protect the rights of water users, provides systems for dealing with future water requirements and supports the water needs of natural ecosystems. “Areas like Charters Towers and along the Sutter River are emerging as agricultural hubs and ripe for development,” Mr Knuth said.

Sign up for Ravenshoe GRIND IF you are interested in bike riding and testing yourself, then a fantastic challenge is in the offing for you. On September 20, the Ravenshoe Grind (which is officially Queensland’s lowest to highest altitude event) will put up to 100 dedicated riders through their paces. The 45km course will see riders commence in Ravenshoe and make their way through the Misty Mountains, before concluding at the South Johnston Camp. As part of the race, there will be three separate components (Novice – 15 to 25km), (Transitional – 25 to 40km) and (Experienced – 45km). In light of the tragedy which has befallen Ravenshoe this year, significant funding will be set aside for those impacted – along with greater awareness for trail bike riding in the region. If you wish to register for the event, please contact Janet Greenwood on 0417 444 659.

James Morrison rehearses ahead of ‘Jazz on the Green’ with children from the CYIP program.

Fantastic opportunity for Cape York kids 50 primary school students from across three Cape York-based communities will be given a wonderful opportunity this week. The students – who are from Aurukun, Hopevale and Coen – will take centre stage alongside James Morrison at the special ‘Jazz on the Green’ festival at Palm Cove this weekend. Facilitated by co-ordinators of the Queensland Music Festival program, the Cape York instrumental project (CYIP) has helped play a major role in the lives of children in the region. QMF Artistic Director James Morrison said: “We are extremely proud of QMF’s work in remote Far North Queensland, and seeing the positive influence music can have on children’s lives is incredible. “I love following the students’ journeys, watching them learn and improve, and seeing them perform in concert as budding musicians and I’m really looking forward to catching up with our CYIP graduates to hear firsthand about the legacy of the project.”

Soil success in Malanda MALANDA was centre of activity on September 1 and 2, with several locals actively taking part in a special soil regeneration workshop. With an emphasis on compost, workshop participants were treated to a superb masterclass by event facilitator, Kym Kruse. Malanda Chamber of Commerce vice president Christine Doan was excited at the success of the workshop. “It is a dream to at last be partnering with RegenAG,” she said. “Much of the Malanda community is devoted to holistic practices including development. Any foundational work on growing plants and soil regeneration we can help bring to these progressive residents helps us prepare a thriving future.”

Men need to take action against Prostate Cancer

Big names lining up for Yungaburra Triathlon

WITH prostate cancer still playing an unwanted role in Australia, men are being encouraged to take action early. Survival is often greater if detected early and Cancer Council Qld representative Katie Clift is encouraging families to talk about making a call for help if it is needed. “Men, their partners, and their families are encouraged to talk to one of our experienced professionals for information and advice on the practical, emotional and psychological impacts of prostate cancer,” Ms Clift said. “The disease can take a devastating toll on men, who can experience incontinence, impotence, fatigue, anxiety and distress following a diagnosis and treatment. “Whether you have a practical concern, require psychosocial support or simply need a listening ear to talk through your challenges and experiences, our 13 11 20 team is here to assist. “The call-in is also open to loved ones – if you’re concerned about the men in your life, help and understanding is only a phone call away.”

TRC Regional Councillor Rod Marti updated councillors on the latest progression of the Yungaburra Triathlon last Thursday morning. After informing the room that formal registrations would begin to be accepted for the event within a couple of weeks, Cr Marti highlighted some very special guests had been invited to attend. “The impact on the Yungaburra community this year will not be as significant as it was last year, in terms of road closures,” he said. “Plus everyone knows we will not be coinciding with the Yungaburra Market Day this year as well. We’ve slotted in between Remembrance Day and Yungaburra Market Day. “We’ve approached Ben Roberts-Smith (VC), who was up here for the opening in 2013 – and he is now with Channel 7. “Channel 7 is now one of our sponsors, so we have formally written to them and invited him along to come to the event.” The Yungaburra Triathlon will be held on November 14 and 15 at the ‘Avenue of Honour’ along the Tinaburra foreshore.

‘Crazy Ants’ proposal heads to Parliament House this week

Ravenshoe Recovery Committee convene

SEVERAL Far North delegates will head to Parliament House this week, in a bid to address federal politicians on the severity of yellow crazy ants in the our region. Representatives from the Wet Tropics Management Authority, Member for Leichhardt Warren Entsch (along with Liberal candidate for Kennedy Noeline Ikin) will meet with Federal Environment Minister Greg Hunt, fellow Liberal Party constituents and senior advisor representing Barnaby Joyce. The ants can cause absolute mayhem across a multitude of industries including: agriculture, fruit and even sugar. Mr Entsch said: “It’s great to see that there is a focus on total eradication, rather than just control, which is critical. If we move quickly we can achieve that outcome. “In July, I met with WTMA and Russett Park Community Taskforce members, including the Jacoby family - and I have to commend the residents for their efforts in their local area. “It would be an absolute disaster if these ants were to get further established in the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area – we have to act now, so I congratulate WTMA for their very comprehensive eradication proposal and I’ll be advocating strongly on their behalf with my colleagues.”

THE Ravenshoe Recovery Committee recently convened, with members enthusiastic about recent progress. Cr Shaaron Linwood – who is chair of the committee – said several community events had done wonders in bringing the community together. “Over 35 people attended inspirational presentations on August 26 and 27 in Ravenshoe by burns survivor Carol Mayer,” she said.“Carol provided insights into her personal recovery journey and the need for ongoing support not only for those impacted physically by the event, but for the family and carers of the survivors.” Chairperson of the Independent Appeal Distribution Committee Lyndal Scobell said fundraising efforts since the June tragedy were taking shape. “It is outstanding the generous contributions which continue to be received through the official GIVIT Ravenshoe Appeal,” she said. “So far $549,362 has been received with $181,760 distributed to those affected. Fundraising activities are still occurring across the region to support the recovery needs of the injured.”

Ravenshoe COC AGM

THE Ravenshoe Chamber of Commerce will be holding their AGM on September 10 from 7pm at the Ravenshoe Hotel. All welcome.

entertainment What’s on at the Rising Sun

Comedy, sci-fi and drama are big at the Rising Sun Cinema this week, with three top flics opening on Mareeba’s big screen. First off is SOUTHPAW, an excellent drama about relationships, set in the frantic world of boxing. Starring Forest Whitaker, Rachel McAdams and Jake Gyllenhaal, this excellent production will leave you inspired and satisfied. If it’s fun and laughter you are after, then VACATION, with an all star cast which includes; Ed Helms. Chris Hemsworth, Christina Applegate, Leslie Mann, Chevy Chase and Beverly D'Angelo will have you laughing out loud. Last, but by no means least, is the first film of the exciting school holiday line up, with pre holidays screenings of PIXELS starting tomorrow Thursday. This action packed sci- fi adventure will enthuse most people, and with a PG rating, is ideal family entertainment.

SOUTHPAW

Boxer Billy Hope (Jake Gyllenhaal) turns to trainer Tick Willis (Forest Whitaker) to help him get his life back on track after losing his wife Maureen (Rachel McAdams) in a tragic accident and his daughter Leila (Oona Laurence) to child protection services. Review by Louise Keller: With the story’s emotional heart as compelling as its bloody fight sequences, Southpaw is a powerhouse of a film. It's a transformative role for Jake Gyllenhaal, who is almost unrecognisable as Billy Hope, beefed up with muscles to spare, ornamental tattoos and a tortured face that is often dripping with blood. It is hard not to wince as we watch Billy become a punching bag in the ring. But he is a champion.

Dags – a must see junior theatre performance THANKS to a grant from the Mareeba Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank, Mareeba Junior Theatre Group proudly presents their latest play ‘Dags’, by Debra Oswald and directed by Ken Cotterill. The play follows sixteen-year-old Gillian, a "dag", a nerd, a misfit, totally uncool, who sees herself as fat, ugly and a social cripple. Throughout this play Gillian takes us on a funny, excruciating journey through the world of adolescent anguish and awkwardness. She finds it hard to cope with her bright gung-ho sister, who is not only totally together physically, but also has a bouncy, positive mental attitude. As well, she needs to deal with her gossipy girlfriends, her addiction to chocolate, and her desperate quest to be beautiful and popular.

So when she develops a crush on the school heart-throb and finds herself on a blind date with a mega-dag, Gillian feels pushed to the edge. But in a surprise ending, Gillian triumphs with an exhilarating moment of self-awareness and confidence. The critic for the Sydney Morning Herald called this play "A celebration of survival, a paean to self-reliance and self-respect. It is scalding about life's bullies and affectionate about its dags. It is a slice of life that cuts deep." Recommeded for high school age ‘dags’, the play is on this Friday and Saturday, September 11 and 12 at 7.30pm at the Mareeba Theatre Group Clubhouse, at 74 Constance Street, Mareeba. Adults are $15 each and teenagers $10 each with tickets are available at the door.

Hoping to bring his family closer together and to recreate his childhood vacation for his own kids, an adult Rusty Griswold takes his wife and two sons on a crosscountry road trip to Walley World. Needless to say, things don't go quite as planned. Rusty Griswold takes his own family on a road trip to "Walley World" in order to spice things up with his wife and reconnect with his sons. Review by Nicki Marie: Pleasantly surprised. This movie had some really funny bits. Easily holds up to the original movie as a sequel. I don't usually gush over child actors, but Steele Stebbins is hilarious. What a horrible child. Lol. Christina Applegate, great as usual. Laughed out loud several times.

PIXELS

Sam Brenner, Will Cooper, Ludlow Lamonsoff, and Eddie "The Fire Blaster" Plant all played classic arcade video games as teenagers. But now they have to use their skills to try to save the world from aliens. The aliens watched video feeds that they thought was a declaration of war. So they send down the classic arcade games to destroy earth. They also get help from a military specialist. They have three lives and if all three get used then earth will be destroyed, and every time they lose a life the aliens take someone's life. Who will win, us or the aliens? It's an all-out battle to save our planet and everyone on it.

Byrne calls for action PALASZCZUK Government Agricultural Minister Bill Byrne left the ‘Rural Crisis Forum’ in Charters Towers last week under no illusions as to what means the most to local graziers. In a forum facilitated by Shane Knuth (State Member for Dalrymple) Robbie Katter (State Member for Mt Isa) and Bob Katter (Federal Member for Kennedy), Mr Byrne freely presented and spoke with locals about their concerns facing the bush. Mr Knuth said that he was less than impressed by how Qld state governments had treated the bush over the last 25 years. “Rural and regional Queensland have been done over for years - and from the Minister’s comments, it sounds like they will continue to be done over,” Mr Knuth said. “Governments built this country - built the Burdekin Dam, built railways and opened up coal fields to mining, State Government played their role.” “We used to have nation builders, now they're just all just nation sweeteners.

“When we go speak to the Premier, it isn’t for Shane Knuth and Rob Katter. This is about what’s in the heads and minds of those in rural Queensland and their passion to fight tooth and nail for their survival,” Mr Knuth said. These sentiments were echoed by Robbie Katter, who said that rural debt was fast becoming a major weight on several communities. “Rural debt is the big lead weight around all these businesses that affects people in our towns. The tills in towns and pubs and grocery stores - it’s a burden that everyone is dealing with. We’ve got an answer to that and it’s a rural reconstruction board,” he said. “It’s been done before, we are very advanced with the Government in trying to deliver that, and the Minister is aware of that, people need to be told more than they are just being listened to. “The starting point is recovering that profitability element out here and rebuilding the industry, we do want a good answer.”

Cross is boss in Mareeba Speedway A-Grade

By Justin Fris

BEN Cross (pictured above with Angelo Tudini) capped off a memorable Sunday afternoon at the Mareeba Speedway, after claiming a tidy A-Grade double. Angelo Tudini – who is a perennial favourite in the division – finished in 2nd place, with Jarrod Vivers finishing 3rd. In B-Grade, it was a impressive afternoon for Brydon Pickup, who also managed a double over George Tichborne. C-Grade went the way of Tony Villella (pictured far right) who yet again showed he is one of the most in form drivers at the club. In the exciting F500’s category, Matthew Foyle led

the way in the feature race, although Jarrod Desmares initially won the heats. Speedway officials are now in the final stages of preparation for their upcoming night meet on Saturday, September 26. It will be on this date when the track is officially opened by the Member for Cook, Billy Gordon, alongside other sporting stakeholders. Officials can confirm that drivers from Rockhampton, Mackay and Townsville will be making their way up to the Far North for the meet. Racing will begin from 3pm, with the main opening commencing at 4pm. Races will run through til 10pm, with plenty of entertainment options for the whole family.

NETBALL in Mareeba came to its crescendo last Saturday afternoon at Mareeba State School, with several Tablelands derbies on offer. In the U/12’s, it was a solid victory for the A-Team, who ran out 30-16 winners over the Cherry Bombs. Shontay Jones was adjudged best afield for the victors. Mareeba notched up derby success in the U/14’s, with the Silver Bullets holding on for a tight 30-26 finish against Atherton 4. However Atherton were able to head home down the Kennedy Highway with some silverware, after Atherton 5 were

too good for the Marvels in the U/18’s, winning 33-25. The day would also be a special day for Tarryn Steele (pictured) who was awarded the Mareeba Netball Association’s ‘Player of the Year’ award. Renown for her excellent training ethic and a desire to achieve, Tarryn played in several regional and state level championships during the year – along with being a rep captain at the Qld Country carnival. The future looks bright for netball in Mareeba, if the quality of play in the grand finals is a true indicator. Roll on 2016.

EXPRESS sPORT Fitting finale for Atherton hockey season

Steggles arrest Serial Killer streak

THE Atherton Tablelands Hockey Association was pleased to host their grand finals on Saturday September 5, 2015. All games were played in the spirit of great sportsmanship and were tough, hard and competitive. In the U/10’s, the All Stars and Atherton fought a tough battle - with neither side being able to gain the upper hand throughout much of the match. With the support of his team, Robbie Massaso was able to put a goal away for All Stars in the narrowest of victories. The U/13 games were also fiercely contested, with the Scorchers testing the skills of the All Stars and being very gallant in the narrowest of defeats. Abby Toshach was dominant in the box for the All Stars with a final score line of 4-2. The U/13 boys Vikings gained the upper hand over the Troopers and were able to maintain their lead to be declared 2015 premiers - with Clem Lucey scoring all the goals of the game. The U/18 All Stars maintained their dominance on the field with a great win over the Voodoos with a final score of 5-0. The ladies minor premier Shooters went into their finals as the favourites and again showed great skill on the field winning against Voodoos to maintain their dominance in the ladies competition; Jess Finlen was dominant on the field with a 3-0 final score. In the veterans finals, Waterloo pushed Plastered Vets to the ultimate, with the game going into extra time. Drops offs in application finally resulted in a 1-0 win to Plastered Vets. In the final game of the day, Tomahawks Green faced off against Tomahawk Gold - with Green being declared premiers for 2015. The Association would like to congratulate all Premiers for 2015 and thank all sponsors, volunteers, players and spectators for a wonderful season and we look forward to seeing you all in 2016. The following pictures (above and right) indicated that a lot of fun and competitive nature was on show.

IT should have been a basketball spectacle, with the proven Baiada Steggles confronting a Serial Killers outfit stacked with talent and height. Indeed for half a game it was. A small crowd gathered courtside for the early game and witnessed a first half that was clean and crisp, bordering on the sublime. Going into the quarter time break, Baiada had 18 points and the Killers were in hot pursuit on 16. Tua Alofi and Sarrah Myrteza were both quick to hurry the scorers, with the familiar point guard and centre combination renowned for destroying opposition zones. For the Killers, shooting from the ever-reliable Mar Hagger was supported cleverly by Christine Leet, who would go on to grab 19 points for the evening. A second quarter paraded much of the same shooting consistency with Tua Alofi scoring at will including from well outside for the Chooks. Up to the challenge, Tahleah Haddow and the Leet sisters peppered the scoreboard for the Killers. Tracey Leet has technically one of the

better mid-range shots in the competition and junior girls and guys could do worse than watch this girl’s offence in the half court. The Steggles strategy was apparent by the second quarter. Cyrena Myrteza was playing her customary open court defence, and then sneakily receiving full court passes and converting these to easy money. Unfortunately, the second half was to be a lower calibre affair, with Killers refusing to leave a player back to cover the full court passes and counter the full-time cherry picker, Cyrena Myrteza. This strategic blunder was to mark the capitulation of the Killers. Ouch. 63 to 39 at the close of business. Cherry sales had gone sky high. A few questionable blocking calls and the general lack of whistle at times did little to change the outcome of the game and only further cheapened the second half. Nevertheless the first half was a ripper and gives sports fans reason to take a peek inside the PCYC on upcoming Tuesday nights.

HOT AIR further pushed their claims for a Mareeba Basketball League grand final berth, with a solid 51-38 victory over the Comets last Thursday evening. At times it was far from pretty, with the fluoro men put through their paces by a rugged Comets outfit. With a solid blend of old and new within their ranks, the Comets made a statement early by generating key offensive rebounds. This held them in good stead early in the contest, until Hot Air unveiled one of the finest defensive presses seen in recent times. Implemented predominantly in the middle of the court – its effectiveness was pincer-like – and generated significant turnover ball. Alas for Hot Air, they struggled to drain easy baskets toward the end of the quarter and only led by four points after a quarter of play. In the second term, both sides would endure frustrating sequences of play. Hot Air missed their first five shots – but then countered, with three in a row to end the interval. Ezra Hawke was largely left unguarded during this period of the

match and he rewarded his teammates with some excellent offensive looks. It would be during the second quarter that the Comets would ultimately lose their way, falling further behind due to poor shooting. With a solid 27-15 lead at half time, Hot Air players reminded themselves of the importance of finishing strong and not getting sloppy. Despite solid efforts from Fabio Nocilla and co, the Comets gradually faded from the contest – but are by no means out of the title race. Any one of five teams (MBA Deadleys, Red Devils, Hot Air, Comets or Stingrays) are capable of beating anyone on the top of their game. In other matches, Express broke through for a maiden 50-19 pummelling of the Barras, who look no closer to winning a game. The MBA Deadleys were also able to extend their winning streak to six matches, with a 41-36 victory over the Stingrays and now hold top spot by four points. The league table stands as follows: MBA Deadleys 18, Red Devils 14, Hot Air 13, Comets 12, Stingrays 12, Express 8, Barras 6.

Bulls survive final minutes of mayhem

Wayne Srhoj jostles for posession in midfield. By Justin Fris

THE Mareeba United Football Club advanced to the FNQ Premier League grand final, after an unforgettable 4-2 major semi final win over Stratford last Saturday evening at Borzi Park. Stratford ended the match with nine men, after Dale Goodwin and Angelo Serafin were sent off in a whirlwind final nine minutes. While the Bulls will rest with a week off and prepare for another grand final appearance, Stratford will now be required to win an away preliminary final without their supreme shot stopper. It could have been oh so different for the visitors, who burst out of the traps early and were unlucky not to be 1-0 up after two minutes. After charging out of his box to collect an inswinging cross, Bulls keeper Julian Madrid was adjudged to have carried the ball outside the area. Fortunately for the home side, the referee didn’t point to the penalty spot – instead, awarding a tantalising 19 yard free kick for Joe Rusch. Rusch’s free kick dipped sweetly, beating Madrid on its path; unfortunately for him, it also narrowly beat the crossbar. After gradually working their way through the middle of the park minutes later, the Bulls took a surprise lead against the run of play through Anthony Mete. With a loaded penalty area all anxiously eyeing off a clever corner, Stratford defenders stood

motionless, with Mete one of three attackers converging on the goal against a stranded Serafin. His bullet-like header in the top corner was impossible for Serafin to stop, given his lack of support. In what was very surprising to watch, Stratford struggled to express themselves through both shape and overall passing in midfield. Despite very much dominating possession, the final ball was too often unable to find its target. And when the ball did find a waiting striker, the resolute Bulls back four showed little mercy in closing them down. Stratford’s woes were compounded in the 13th minute, when they could only watch in awe as Paul Ruiz scored one of the goals of the 2015 season. After tenaciously winning the ball in his own half, Mete slickly crabbed his way past an oncoming opponent and passed the ball up field to Wayne Srhoj. With Srhoj’s dancing feet touching the halfway line, he delivered an inch perfect cross into the path of a speedy Ruiz who was onside. Once controlling the football, Ruiz noticed that Serafin was well off his line in the penalty area and executed a cheeky, yet classy shot from 25 yards. Serafin could only look back into the goal with utter frustration - as this time - his lacklustre positioning had contributed to the lead increase.

Paul Ruiz scores a wonder goal (Photos by Peter Roy)

Mete continued to raise several headaches for the visitors, with two fine shots in the 21st minute both giving Serafin plenty of work to do. Joe Rusch was a shining light for Stratford, despite the nature of the contest. Each time he was presented with a set piece or open space, he looked extremely dangerous. The Bulls hit party mode only two minutes into the second half, when David Ruiz added a goal to his seasonal tally. After doggedly working his way into the penalty area on the clubhouse flank, Ruiz curled a teasing shot into the bottom corner from 15 yards. At 3-0, MUFC coach Alex Srhoj began to gradually ring in the changes, with Wayne Srhoj substituted for some fresh legs. However it was in the 79th minute when the match – and potentially the season – really unravelled for Stratford. After disagreeing with a decision, Dale Goodwin angrily hurled the match ball against the nearest advertising board. Instantaneously, the referee hoisted a yellow card aloft. After further voicing his displeasure at the decision, he was given a second yellow and sent off in a space of 30 seconds. Inexplicably, this actually appeared to work in Stratford’s favour, who managed to find new life and peg two goals back in only five minutes. Suddenly, smiling home supporter faces began to look a little anxious as the visitors ap-

peared destined to equalise at the death. But in a cruel twist of fate, Stratford would be reduced to nine men in the 90th minute, with Serafin sent off for bring down Mete in the box. It should be noted that there was nothing malicious about Serafin’s challenge. He was merely the last man and was trying to prevent further damage on the scoreboard. Mete duly converted from the penalty spot and the home supporters could commence plans for the grand final. MUFC Coach Srhoj said: “We handled the pressure well. We knew that they were going to be direct and in the first half we did enough to put ourselves in a good position. “Look, maybe when Wayne came off, everyone relaxed a bit; lost the momentum and then they scored a couple of nice goals. “They lifted and then scored again – that’s football - but I think 4-2 was a fair reflection of the game and I’m proud of the boys.” MUFC’s reserves were defeated 2-0 in their major semi final clash against Leichhardt earlier in the evening and will now face an away preliminary final trip to either Edge Hill or Marlin Coast. Unfortunately the MUFC 2nd division side, have been eliminated from the finals race, after a 2-1 defeat against Stratford last Friday night. Despite the loss, they managed to secure a finals spot after a frustrating run of form.
