Mareeba business awards showcase excellence

Petition circulates By Justin Fris

A

petition supporting a change to parliamentary law has begun to circulate within the state electorate of Cook. Member for Cook Billy Gordon has been unable to shake off drama from a variety of both past and recent incidents since being elected in January – with his attendance at official electorate functions becoming virtually obsolete. Mr Gordon was officially invited to attend the most recent Cook Shire Council meeting (held on Tuesday, October 20) by Mayor Peter Scott; however he did not turn up.

Prior to this, Mr Gordon was advertised to officially open the Mareeba Speedway on September 29. He again failed to attend, with Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Tom Gilmore required to fill in and conduct the opening on Minister Bill Byrne’s behalf. Cooktown resident Sofiea Gibson – who is a passionate community volunteer on several local committees and causes – decided to create a petition, after speaking with fellow colleagues on the situation. “I was talking to my colleagues and friends about the current situation within the Cook electorate,” she said. “We are disappointed with how

Billy Gordon is currently performing within the region - and a few people suggested that a petition would be fairest and most logical way to make changes to parliamentary law. “He has been too busy cleaning up his own dramas, rather than being able to work for his constituents. He also has an added responsibility of representing the indigenous community.” The parliamentary law change posed in the petition is designed to keep politicians honest. Effectively, if they fail to meet a minimum standard of performance or attendance, they can be removed from their seat prior to the following election – with a by-election held to determine

the new sitting member. In many ways, the suggested change is similar to an individual beginning full-time employment. After their initial three month probationary period, their performance is assessed and reviewed – and determined as to whether they can remain in the role. Mr Gordon has come under fire from politicians, indigenous elders and Cook electorate residents over the last few months, with many calling for him to resign. Currently, he can only be removed from the seat of Cook if he chooses to resign. CONTINUED PAGE 3

Fitting display unveiled in Mareeba By Justin Fris THE Mareeba Historical Society formally unveiled a new WWI exhibition last Friday morning, which acknowledges and documents the role that nurses and medical staff played in assisting those in conflict. Mareeba Historical Society President John Hammond formally presided over the opening and was proud of how the exhibition had been both compiled and presented. “We’re into our third stage,” he said. “We had that much material that we needed to divide it up into three divisions – troops, indigenous soldiers, nurses and non combatants. “So much has been done over the last two years to get this all together.” Mareeba Hospital medical superintendant Dr Tjaart Grobbelaar then gave some further insight into the sheer number of personnel who committed themselves to the cause. “There were 65 million people involved in WWI,” he said. “Of that, 10 million were killed – that’s about a 15 per cent mortality rate.” Initially, the British Government deemed that women were not allowed to participate at all during the war. However upon learning that 60 female nurses were involved in South African conflict, this was reversed. Dr Grobbelaar added: “In the end, 2,139 nurses participated in the war. 29 died in active service and 189 were honoured for their service, with

John Hammond (Mareeba Historical Society President), Dr Tjaart Grobbelaar, Helen Kindt (Mareeba Historical Society), Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Tom Gilmore and Carol Pagett (Mareeba Historical Society)

a further seven honoured for bravery.” The Mareeba Historical Society have amassed a truly remarkable exhibition of artefacts and information of some of the challenges and tasks that nurses and medical personnel

needed to meet during WWI. If you are interested in attending the exhibition, it is located in Centenary Park (next to the Mareeba Heritage Centre) on Byrnes Street.

By Justin Fris SKILLED dancer Rowena Petersen continues to excel in major dance competitions across the Far North – and is showing no signs of slowing down any time soon. Rowena has competed in several major events across the Far North during 2015 – with her latest appearance in Cairns nothing short of exceptional. “I did eight dances during the competition and placed in all of them,” she said. “I’ve completed in several competitions this year, so I’ve actually been in training since Term 4 of last year.” Naturally training for such a skilled discipline requires exceptional discipline and application. Rowena trains between one and two hours every day and squeezes in extra practise in the lead up to a major competition. Prior to a major competition, nerves and preparation are two things that go hand in hand. Rowena will arrive well before her scheduled routine and maintain composure mentally and physically. “About an hour before, I will go through my routine steps and then warm up,” she said. “This is for my flexibility and to ensure I don’t hurt myself on stage.” She added: “When you first get on the stage (emotions) it is hard to explain. It is a really good feeling. Even though there are heaps of people watching, dancing takes my body and takes it somewhere else. “I focus on making the audience feel my dance. Make them feel the happiness.”

Rowena is extremely dedicated toward her future in dancing.

Rowena – who currently attends Mareeba State High School – began dancing at the age of three, with her supportive family behind her every step of the way. She has an engrained passion for music – which is nothing short of astonishing. She believes any song can be turned into a dance.

Along with her passion for dancing, Rowena also is a reputable fashion model and holds down a couple of part-time jobs. These commitments can be imposing for some and the travel for some events can be long, but with a supportive family and friends by her side, the sky appears to be the limit for Rowena’s future in dancing.

Mrs Sofiea Gibson - creator of the petition.

Billy Gordon unable to shake off electoral disharmony FROM PAGE 1 In his brief statements in parliament during sitting weeks, Mr Gordon has said that he will not resign; and said he was committed to working for the people of the Cook electorate. Mrs Gibson said she was disappointed that Mr Gordon did not visit Cooktown during his recently planned trip. “We thought maybe after the initial incident had died down, that things may get better,” she said. “Then this latest situation breaks. We need an MP to be out and about and working for our communities.” Mrs Gibson added that some members of the indigenous community in Cooktown were disappointed that some of Mr Gordon’s actions appeared to reinforce ‘so called stereotypes’. “We need strong leaders who can help our children and community; along with giving them inspiration,” she said. Members of various Cooktown organisations (including Mrs Gibson) are keen to meet with Mr Gordon and openly discuss the positive things happening within the region – and try to work collaboratively within the electorate. “We are more than happy to meet with Billy,” Mrs Gibson said. “We just can’t seem to get a response. I’m sure he is a nice person and I can appreciate his current situation.” Mrs Gibson said the petition would be rolled out across the majority of the Cook electorate, with Port Douglas, Mareeba, Mossman and Weipa being the first ports of call. The petition will run for two months. “We are hoping to get around 3-4,000 signatures across the entire Cook electorate,” she said. “Early next year, we will head down to Brisbane to formally present the petition in parliament – and make sure it does not get shuffled under other paper.”

Henry Bevan is a 5th generation farmer of a proud family operation, which has set the pace in dairy since 1910.

100 years of dairy NINE Far North Queensland dairy families were officially recognised for their contribution of 100 years of dairy farming in Malanda last Wednesday. As part of a partnership between the Dairy Farmer Milk Cooperative (DFMC) and Lion Dairy and Drinks, representatives of the families spent time with key stakeholders, dairy industry personnel and Tablelands Regional Council Mayor, Rosa Lee Long. DFMC Chairman, Duncan McInnes, said: “The DFMC has been in partnership with LDD for many years, and while times may have changed, we agree that success in the dairy business is still about hard work, a commitment to quality, building relationships and thinking long-term. “These nine DFMC families have demonstrated these qualities for 100 years or more, and we’re very proud to recognise their achievements today.” One of the proud award winners was Mr Greg English – who with his wife Bronwyn – has carried on the noble legacy laid down by his great grandfather, James English. “He was impressed by the stories he had heard of the rich land in Far North Queensland so, they made the long journey north. The cattle were transported by boat from Brisbane to Cairns and supplied milk to the whole ship during the journey. “Bronwyn and I took over the Malanda farm in November 2001, and our current herd still contains descendants of the original English

family herd that was brought up from Lismore. “We currently milk 180 Illawarra and Holstein cows. We’re certainly very proud our milk helps to create quality products like Malanda Dairy Farmers. Another notable and equally remarkable local legacy is the impact of the Bevan family, who have been farming in Ravenshoe since 1910. John Bevan – along with his son Henry (who is a 5th generation farmer) – are part of a loyal family operated business. Henry now manages the successful farming enterprise, which encompasses both breeding (‘Bevandale’ Stud) and dairy. Unsurprisingly, a morning for Henry starts bright and early. Milking begins at 5am, as it is imperative for the cows not to be exposed to extreme heat during this process. “I typically will head home at about 6.30pm,” he said. “In terms of dealing with working in the heat, it is something you just get used to and push through.” An increase of milk prices has proven to be a bit of a challenge not just for the Bevan family, but others throughout the region. Despite this, family loyalty and support is something that Henry relishes. “It’s great to have all of the family involved – especially the kids,” he said. Henry said he was excited ahead of next year’s Malanda Show, which will be the 100th anniversary of the event, with Bevandale set to continue their dominance in the industry.

Peter calls it a day Yuruga Nursery founder opens up about his heart-wrenching decision

Peter and Ann Radke were awarded the ‘Science Champion’ award in 2014 by former premier Campbell Newman. By Carl Portella

Peter Radke, owner of Yuruga Nursery and Clonal Solutions, (for the first time publicly) has chosen to reflect on his 30 years in business; and his heart wrenching decision to place Yuruga Nursery into voluntary liquidation. “It all started when we got married at the end of 1972,” he said. “We fell in love in Grade 12 as high school kids. I was 18 - my wife Ann was 16 and we decided before we finished high school that we wanted to live together forever; and we decided we would get married at some time. “We got married as soon as Ann finished her degree and I had finished some study - by that time, she was 20 and I was 22. “We were always interested in the bush. On the weekend, we would just drop everything and go for a drive or a walk in a national park or in a forest. “In 1973, we went to a flower show organised by the Native Plant Society; and that changed our life, because we realised there were other people like us in an association or club. “After that time, we never planted another ornamental tree - we only ever planted native trees. After four or five years, we moved up north and

bought this bit of bush here - there was nothing here at the time, just eucalyptus forest. “Nobody understood why we wanted to buy a bit of bush at the top of the jump up near Walkamin. Anyway, we did that in the late seventies; and in the early eighties (when we were teachers and we had been teaching for several years up here) we decided that we would try to set up a native plant nursery. “There was a real need for one because no one has access to any native trees in the area. “They were bringing up plants from Victoria and Tasmania - which was ridiculous, because those plants would not survive in this climate. “The nursery was opened in 1985 and it’s been here 30 years. We both gave up teaching by 1987 and we began employing people (for the nursery) right from the very start. “The name ‘Yuruga’ is an aboriginal word which means: “extensive views”; and we came by that because on a clear day, you can see for over one hundred kilometres. “We wanted to grow local species from both the wet tropics and Cape York; gradually introducing them into local gardens. “In three to four years, we had seven or eight staff; and within seven years, we had gone past 1000 species of plants. This includes native Australian plants that have never been grown before in any nursery in the world. “Over the years we, (and I mean the staff and

everyone involved) won many accolades. We were given the ‘Queensland Nurseryman’s Association’ award by the organisation; Ann also won the ‘Australian Institute Management’ award for rural women. There were many of them, but in the last couple of years, we also won the ‘JCU Innovation’ award - just six days before Ann was diagnosed with cancer. “In late 2014, the Newman Government called us up and asked us to nominate for the ‘Science Champion’ awards, which we ended up winning as well. “We were presented with that award just before Christmas 2014 by then Premier Campbell Newman, when they had the ‘Community Cabinet’ in Mareeba – it’s something we didn’t expect. “All these awards would have meant nothing if not for the staff. Everything we do here is based on science and we have some of the best qualified staff you will find in any nursery in Australia. “Words can’t describe how we felt when Ann was diagnosed with cancer; I know people go through it all the time. “It was Thursday, July 17, 2014, when Ann had an operation to have her gallstones removed and I had just left for the hospital 10 minutes earlier. The specialist came in shortly after and told us she had terminal cancer. “She was given two choices – no treatment and you might get two months (to live) - and the other was treatment (and you will be lucky to get

one year). In the end, she only lived another 10 months. “It was one of those rare cancers that according to the medical world doesn’t show up on any scan, blood test or ultra sound. When they find people with those sort of cancers, its almost always too late. “Ann and I were together for a very long time (45years or so). I feel she lost a quarter of her life and that’s how I see it (more so than dwell on the fact I have lost someone that I love). “She was a phenomenal person and we had a phenomenal relationship. We talked and cried for three nights and two days; and by the end of that period, we had planned and discussed a whole heap of things. “By the time she passed away, she had organised her funeral service, including which songs would be sung, who would give the eulogy, what music went with which song; and she wrote two books to her two grand children. “The books were written by Ann – giving her philosophy and what she would like them to do in life – and how she wanted them to treat people. Additionally, how she wanted them to behave, how she wanted them to follow their interests and carve an overall philosophy of life. “We also in that time put a book together of our life together and what we went through. “But (overall) it was great (and) I would do it all over again in a heat beat.”

CLEALL’S

Above, Peter Radke at the entrance of Yuruga Nursery and right, Peter and late wife Ann. CONTINUED FROM PAGE 4

“From mid-July last year, we had to both get out of the nursery really quick, because Ann was told she didn’t have much time; her energy went down each day, as she got knocked around by the chemotherapy. “She also had to pass over to various staff members a lot of the compliance orders she undertook in the business - not just the financial compliance - but also biosecurity compliance of sending plants all over the world; paperwork and all that. “Our son Andrew took over the business and he had to do three jobs – mine, Ann’s and his own. “We were trying to sell the business in 2014, but in the end (for one reason or another) buyers pulled out and orders were not coming in. So I was left with no option by October 15, 2015 but to put the two companies we had into voluntary liquidation. Both Yuruga Nursery (which has been running for 30 years) and Clonal Solutions (for 15 years). “It just got to the point where I could do nothing business-wise in the months after Ann’s death. I was not physically, emotionally or mentally capable of doing anything. “I was caring for Ann for the 10 months after she was diagnosed. “As of a week or so ago, I realised I could not let this go on any further; and I simply had to close up the business. “We used both our solicitor and accountant and approached Tony Jonsson (of Grant Thornton’s Cairns office) and put the wheels in motion to put the business into voluntary liquidation. “On October 15, 2015, I signed all the official papers - and then in the afternoon towards the end of the day - we got all the staff together and told them that their jobs had all run out; which was a very sad thing for me to do. “They kept on some people, because he (Tony Jonsson) is trying to sell the business. It’s my hope and wish that if they could sell the property (the sooner the better), there is more likelihood that more staff will be retained. “A lot of the staff have been with us many many years - some of the staff here would be the very best staff in terms of production in Australia’s nursery-based world. “Without a shadow of a doubt, they are the very very best. I told all the staff that I would do whatever I could to help them get jobs. “I’ve done a lot of public speaking (including radio and TV), but hav-

ing to address my staff was one of the most difficult things I have had to do in my life. “I lost Ann six months ago and now I’m losing my business. It’s not easy. We live in a small community - our staff are personal friends now; and I feel bad. “All this brings to an end trying to keep the business going; I can now see a light at the end of the tunnel and I should not be here in a year’s time. “Financially, I came out of this pretty badly - but at least I can get on with life - That’s the only positive I can see in the whole situation. “What can’t be taken away from what Ann and I have achieved here is the history. We have introduced more than 1000 species in the gardens of Australians that will never ever be grown by another commercial nursery ever again. There will be a huge hole in the gardening world if no one comes forward to purchase the business. “Ann and I wanted to get away as much as we could - so now I will adhere to Ann’s wishes (as she gave me instructions on where her ashes were to be scattered). Together, we made a list of those special places. “Thank you very much to all of our customers for their patronage over the last 30 years.”

Parliamentary life

Member for Dalrymple Shane Knuth is renowned for attending events across his electorate - displaying his unique ‘gift of the gab’ with local residents.

By Justin Fris MEMBER for Dalrymple Shane Knuth has given some insight into the preparation and routine for each sitting member of parliament prior to an official opening or function. Some recent claims on social media have accused Mr Knuth – who is a state independent Katter’s Australia Party crossbencher – of having his official opening speeches pre-written by the Palaszczuk Government. Mr Knuth refutes all of these claims. Mr Knuth has been given an opportunity to clarify protocol for each official opening; and it is a fairly simple process. “We are briefed with information on the opening prior to the function (or opening) by the relevant stakeholders involved at the event,” he said. “The minister is the priority, as it is his or her department who provide the funding. “It is also the minister’s decision to designate who will attend the function – particularly in remote areas, if they are unavailable

to attend. It is their obligation.” Mr Knuth said it was common courtesy to read out apologies and regards of an absent minister – regardless if they were from the ALP (Palaszczuk Government) or LNP (former Newman Government). He added: “We’ve done it in the past and I’ll do it again, I don’t let politics get in the way of community events,” Mr Knuth said. “Everything I say is my own, and always will be,” he said. The electorate of Dalrymple is vast and imposing. Created in 2008 from the former Charters Towers and Tablelands electorates, it takes approximately 12 hours to drive from one end to the other. Travel time on planes or taxis is often a welcomed opportunity for Mr Knuth to catch up with emails and fill out important paperwork. “In some cases, it means driving 1000km to a particular function and then driving back 1000km to another one,” he said. “You must stay close and in touch with your electorate and nev-

er lose sight about what they are thinking or feeling. “It’s very important for me to attend events and have constant communication with locals and hear their concerns.” Mr Knuth works closely with fellow KAP constituent crossbencher Robbie Katter, with the pair conversing daily about important issues impacting the entire state, not just those impacting Dalrymple and Mt Isa. “Robbie and I speak every day,” he said. “Not just about our electorate issues, but those across Qld. Even if a particular issue is impacting someone 2000km away, we do what we can to fight hard on these issues.” The reason why the duo speak about a wealth of different issues is down to the delicate nature of the Queensland political picture – with all independent crossbenchers playing an important role across the state. Passionate about rural issues - Mr Knuth has led the way in parliament this year - particularly for canegrowers and landowners.

Nurse’s act of kindness

A myriad of daily situations that are facing Helen Zahos and fellow volunteers each day on the Greek Island of Lesvos. (Photos by Giannis Doukakis)

By Justin Fris

IMAGINE if you were driving along the main street of any particular town on the Tablelands and you saw hundreds of people walking solemnly with all of their possessions in a plastic bag. How would you react? Would you stop and offer assistance? Or would you drive on by and stick your head in the sand like an ostrich? This situation – and many more graphic and grim encounters – are real realities for dedicated nurse Helen Zahos, who is volunteering on the Greek island of Lesvos amid one of the biggest refugee crises seen in recent times. She has been working as a nurse for Du Monde Greece (Doctors of the World). Prior to leaving for Lesvos, Ms Zahos spent some time working at the Mareeba Hospital. She outlined her passion for nursing and enjoyed working on the Tablelands. A typical shift lasts anywhere between 10 and 12 hours – with Ms Zahos interacting with refugees who only have one set of clothes – the ones on their backs. “Apart from assessing and treating patients, (along with assisting and suturing for the doctor), I’ve also helped with sourcing dry clothes and supplying hygiene kits,” she said. “These kits include toothbrushes, soap, shampoo, sanitary nappies, shoes and powdered baby milk. These people have only come with the clothes that they are wearing.” Despite the goodwill shown by volunteers, some of the refugees can be quite tense. There are thousands of them – and stretched resources and language barriers can sometimes be pushed to the limit. “We deal with so many people who cannot speak either English or Greek,” Ms Zahos said. “Luckily, we have a couple of awesome interpreters. “(In some cases) the doctor asks the

questions to me – I translate it into Greek – and then the interpreter can translate it into Arabic or Farsi, which is a Persianbased language.” She added: “The other challenge is dealing with so many desperate refugees that become impatient. Tensions between them and the police can run quite high, which can lead to rioting and makes for a difficult working environment.” But despite the grim nature of her task, there are some small shining lights, which are attempting to break through the imposing gloom. “When a little child that you have just sourced and changed into a new set of clothes (along with giving them a teddy bear) comes up to you and gives you a hug or blows you a kiss – well, they are the precious moments that keep you going,” Ms Zahos said. “The other highlight is working with such an awesome team, who are so full of energy and enthusiasm.” Ms Zahos will remain in Lesvos until November 10, before heading to another refugee camp on the Greek mainland. She is continuing her ‘My Cause’ finance project, which gives people the opportunity to assist those impacted. “Monetary funds at the moment are the best way to get these people what they need and when they need it,” she said. “Many volunteers have flooded in that are not part of any organisation, so there have been some problems with that. “I’m still running my campaign on ‘My Cause’, which had raised $20,000 when I left. “All receipts have been kept – with all proceeds going toward medications and medical equipment for the clinic and food for the refugees.” If you would like to donate toward assisting volunteers like Ms Zahos in Lesvos, please visit: https://www.mycause. com.au/page/108538/volunteering-forhumanitarian-crisis-in-greece

Teachers recognised at Mareeba Primary By Justin Fris MAREEBA State School formally recognised the efforts of six teachers last Monday morning, in line with ‘World Teachers Day’. Teachers awarded were – Anne Wareing (55 years), Julie Gillman and Liz Crunckhorn (30 years plus) Lisa Fitzsimmons, Valerie Dayes and Jo Jones-Laifoo (25 years plus) who have all left an impenetrable mark on MSS. With ample experience at her disposal, MSS Principal Mandy Whybird said that both students and younger teachers at the school could receive a unique and positive education experience. “It’s fantastic to have this sort of experience at our school,” she said. “It’s not simply knowledge that the ex-

perienced teachers can pass on – it’s the ability to also mentor and coach the younger teachers.” Mrs Whybird highlighted that many of the teachers within the school are ‘home grown’ products of Mareeba – which gives them greater understanding of local demographics, families and building relationships and rapport with parents. In the case of Ms Wareing – the changes that she has witnessed during her education career are simply astonishingly. Blackboards and chalk have eventually become obsolete, along with the paper roll and many time tested traditions. But it has been her ability (along with all teachers at MSS) to embrace change, which has seen the school community grow for the better.

Cr Linwood chalks up 15 years service By Justin Fris TABLELANDS Regional division two councillor Shaaron Linwood was recently recognised by the Local Government of Queensland Association for 15 years of service. Cr Linwood – who has become an indispensable local government stakeholder in the region – received the acknowledgement while in Brisbane, with fellow TRC councillor, Peter Hodge. The duo attended the LGAQ conference, which is a forum for councillors to attend all across the state. Cr Linwood said there were several key topics that were covered throughout the conference and said she would be able to take plenty from her experience. “The LGAQ Conference had a number of important motions put forward this year in relation to NDRRA, Pest Management, the State

Emergency levy and impact on small extractive industries that I was very keen to put my support behind; and this is the most effective venue to be doing so,” she said. “The theme of the conference was “taking control of our own destiny” - and perhaps the most empowering thing I came back with in that sense was that we’d be much better served if we were to focus much more on what we have - and how we can take better advantage of that - rather than to be constantly bewailing what we lack.” TRC Mayor Rosa Lee Long congratulated both councillors on their attendance and agreed that they would gain from the experience. “Cr’s Hodge and Linwood will gain a better understanding of key issues facing local government, opportunities and best practice, of which they will be able to share with fellow councillors and staff where applicable,” she said. It has been a lengthy journey for Cr Linwood,

who has seen many changes throughout her time as a councillor. She has won hearts, opened new facilities and always never been afraid of standing up for those who matter – her constituents. “With the Herberton Shire Council, my first eight years were spent representing a very small portion of the Herberton Shire - mainly focused on Evelyn, Tumoulin and the township of Herberton - and I had two other councillors basically doing the same in our division,” she said. “When the amalgamation came about, the whole of the Herberton Shire, (plus some of the western area of the former Mareeba Shire) became TRC Division 2; and it went from eight councillors and a Mayor in the former Herberton Shire, to just myself representing a larger area than the HSC had originally been.” Cr Linwood was given an opportunity to mention both those who have been special to her and to personalise some words for ratepayers within

her division. She said: “I wouldn’t want to single any particular person out,” she said. “I have built very close relationships in all the areas of my division over the time and I have tried to represent the division best as I can - and can honestly say I could not have done it without them. She added: “It has been an honour to represent a division of such diversity, with people who are positive and always ready to get in and give a hand to make things happen; and that is the thing I will miss most, working with amazing people. “I know that my replacement can look forward to the same level of support. “My only hope is that whoever is their next councillor has a real heart for the people - because ultimately, it is the people who matter.” Cr Linwood plans to continue her solid representation, which will end in March 2016.

Mayor’s Christmas Appeal now open

Lisa Stansfield of Girgenti Lawyers is one of two finalists in the WLAQ ‘Regional Woman Lawyer of the Year’ competition.

Cr Mary Graham, Mayor Tom Gilmore and Cr Karen Ewin are urging residents to donate to toward the Mayor’s Christmas Appeal.

Big achievement By Justin Fris

LOCAL senior associate solicitor (Girgenti Lawyers) Lisa Stansfield is one of two finalists in the upcoming Women Lawyers Association of Queensland ‘Regional Women Lawyer of the Year’ competition. Originally from Ireland, Lisa’s passion for law bloomed during her mid-thirties and she has been working in law since 2007. In 2011, she was admitted by the Supreme Court of Queensland as a solicitor. Lisa was one of ten children growing up and recalls her unique education, which was heavily based around the arts as a teenager. “I completed my secondary education in Ireland under the stern eye of the Presentation Convent nuns,” she said. “The nuns were very strict but the standard of education was excellent.” She added: “After secondary school, I actually went to Art College for four years; I later discovered that as much as that was fun, it was not a very secure career choice.” After spending several years travelling, she based herself in Cairns and began to study law at James Cook University. This transition back to tertiary study can be attributed to her supportive husband, Chris Rose (who is a former lawyer himself). “At that time I was working in retail but knew I wanted to do something more,” she said. “Around that time, I (also) met my now husband Chris Rose (well-known but now retired lawyer). “Chris encouraged me to go back to university, but I think I surprised him when I choose to study law.” She added: “I remember telling Chris I would try it for one semester and see how I went – I loved it. “Law is all about people and their problems, the trouble they get into and how lawyers apply their knowledge of the law to resolve their client’s legal issues. I found it fascinating and still do.” Theoretically, Lisa’s hours are between “8.30am and

5pm” – however in reality (and through personal choice) she goes beyond the pass mark. “I don’t go home until I have achieved what is required; otherwise I won’t sleep that night,” she said. Across the Far North, Lisa converses with a broad diversity of clients. Many come to her in one of the worst periods of their life; and she must offer clear and concise advice for their betterment. “I deal with clients of all different backgrounds who come here from all over the world,” she said. “That of course can lead to some interesting scenarios when parties break up and one wants to go back home, be that interstate or overseas.” She added: “One of the reasons that I am a very good family lawyer is that I do not take on my client’s emotions and become personally involved. “Clients are paying me to give them clear objective advice and to lead them through the legal complexities “Whilst I sympathise and empathise with my clients I do not let emotions cloud the advice I give them. I have to be the voice of reason that helps them resolve their problem.” Naturally Lisa is not immune to noticing trends across the region. Often while volunteering for various legal aid programs in Cairns and Mareeba, she notices many are doing it tough. “I notice in Cairns and Mareeba that there is a great divide between rich and poor,” she said. “I regularly volunteer my time without pay at the Cairns Community Legal Aid Centre in Cairns (and through their ‘Mareeba Outreach Program’), so I know that there are many people in Cairns and Far North Queensland who need, but can ill afford to pay for legal services.” It is these constituents and her many clients that Lisa represents with distinction each day; and being one of two female lawyers (out of 5000) to be nominated for the award is a remarkable achievement in itself. The winner of the award will be announced at WLAQ awards dinner on 30th October 2015.

CHRISTMAS is coming – and we all know how this can impact those who are doing it tough. How about we dig deep and do our bit to help those in need? The Mareeba Shire Council will again be hosting their annual ‘Mayor’s Christmas Appeal’ and Mayor Tom Gilmore is urging local members of the community to get behind the cause. “We want everyone in our community to be able to celebrate Christmas without feeling stressed about not being able to afford even the basic foodstuffs,” he said. “Assistance provided through the appeal is a gesture of goodwill and that adds a little cheer to what may be a difficult time of the year for some people in our community. “Last year, the appeal provided over 50 vouchers across the region.” The vouchers are delivered to families referred by various charity groups and welfare agencies in the region including: the Salvation Army, St Vincent De Paul, Blue Care in Mareeba, Kuranda Neighbourhood Centre. If you would like to apply for as-

sistance this festive season, you must register an application with any of the above agencies. In order to qualify for assistance, you must currently be receiving a government benefit. “In the true spirit of Christmas, Mareeba Shire Council would like to help make the festive season easier for those in need through the appeal which represents what Christmas is all about. I urge everyone to support the appeal by sending in a donation,” Mayor Gilmore said. Donations can be made at Council’s service centres in Mareeba, and Kuranda. People can also send their donation by cheque to: Mayor’s Christmas Appeal, PO Box 154, Mareeba 4880. People are advised to make the cheque payable to ‘Mayor’s Christmas Appeal’. No food items or toys can be accepted for the appeal. Assessment forms are available at the local welfare agencies listed above. The MSC does not have the forms and does not assess the applications. Residents should complete the forms and return them for assessment to the relevant agency by November 20.

Giving up licence made easier for older drivers “We believe any initiative to make the transition from driving to being offthe-road easier is a good thing.” Mr Spalding said there were a number of transportation alternatives for seniors no longer driving. “Many people believe handing over your licence is the end of your independence, but it doesn’t have to be,” he said. “There are a number of transport options available including taxis, community shuttle buses and public transport.” Mr Spalding said in Queensland, drivers over the age of 75, as well as drivers with medical conditions affecting their ability to drive, were required to carry a medical certificate when driving. “If you have concerns about a family member’s ability to drive you should contact your local GP.”

The State’s peak motoring body has urged families to have the conversation with older relatives about the right time to hang up the car keys following the launch of a new service by the State Government. RACQ welcomed the recent initiative for seniors to receive a free proof of identification card and partial refund after surrendering their licence. RACQ Executive Manager Technical and Safety Policy Steve Spalding said the decision to give up driving could be daunting. “We want Queenslanders to talk to older family members and have them consider their ability to continue driving,” Mr Spalding said. “The decision to stop driving may be due to medical reasons or a diminished capacity, and previously that meant older people were left without suitable identification.

Gala business awards By Justin Fris

MAREEBA turned on one of its finest occasions last Saturday evening, with the 2015 Mareeba Chamber of Commerce Business Awards, delivering on a number of levels. Sponsored by QITE and with the packed RSL crowd dressed to impress, smiles and stories were shared all round by committed members of our local businesses. Once the lavish feast had been completed, there were several key business awards that were handed out – a small token for the sizeable imprint that many businesses make within the Mareeba township. ‘Business of the Year’ was awarded to ‘That’s My Physio’, with Joey Trotta receiving the award on the behalf of the company. Located at Byrnes Street in Mareeba, the hardworking team have become an institution throughout not just Mareeba, but the entire Tablelands region. Mr Trotta was naturally thrilled by the award; and said it provided a great opportunity to acknowledge the large cast of people who made the achievement come to life. “It means a lot for our future in Mareeba,” he said. “So for me, it means a lot to acknowledge my staff, my family, my wife – for all the hard work we have put in this year. “To also be able to acknowledge my grandparents means a lot to me as well.” It was also a significant evening for the Dimbulah Lions Club, who were awarded ‘Community Group of the Year’. It was only fitting that loyal members and President Eddie Toffanello were rewarded for the thousands of hours they put in to make our region a better place to live in. “I’m absolutely very honoured,” Mr Toffanello said. “What a privilege – this

is the first time the Lions Club (Dimbulah) has ever received an award like this. “It means a hell of a lot and I think the guys back home at the club are going to feel very proud. Our community is also going to feel very proud. But one thing I’d like to mention is that if all the businesses around Mareeba and Dimbulah didn’t support us, our club wouldn’t survive.” Gerard Kath and quality agriculture practices are known in local circles to go hand in hand. On Saturday night, this theory was solidified, with Mr Kath being awarded the ‘Rural/Agriculture’ business of the year. Mr Kath said: “I’m very honoured and also privileged to be nominated initially. I feel honoured to be seen as a worthy candidate – I was thrilled to win it (the award) and super proud of what we do in our business.” He added: “I just love the local area and this town – and very much looking forward to the growth and new opportunities over the horizon.” Local police assistant senior constable Aleda Robbins was also declared winner of the ‘Communitarian of the Year’ award – which was naturally well received by the crowd, given her tireless pursuit of helping others. “It was an honour to be recognised for working in the community – but I just see this as doing my job,” she said. “But obviously someone else does; and for that, I’m very grateful.” Other major winners on the night included Traction 4x4, who were awarded ‘New Business of the Year’, Caffe Crema received the ‘Customer Service Award’, while Jaques Coffee Plantation were awarded for their excellence in tourism. Additionally, two ‘Highly Commended’ awards were distributed – with Sonlia Fashions (‘Business of the Year’) and Mareeba Working Dog Supplies (‘New business of the Year’) recognised.

Gerard Kath of Lecker Farming was named the Sunwater Rural/Agriculture’ Business of the Year’ – presented by Charlie Martens from Sunwater.

Jason Jaques from Jaques Coffee Plantation was awarded the Golden Drop Winery ‘Tourism / Event of the Year’ award. Presented by Maria and Dino Nastasi of Golden Drop Winery.

James Howe presents Suzi Alba with the Howe Farming ‘New Business of the Year’, who accepted the award on behalf of Traction 4X4.

President of Dimbulah Lions Club Eddie Toffanello accepts the Amaroo ‘Community Group of the Year’ award from Sam Musumeci.

Aleda Robbins was awarded the Port Bajool ‘Communitarian of the Year’, award by Tamara Srhoj on behalf of Port Bajool.

Sister Sonya Alba-Miller and Liana Hastie of Sonlia Fashions received a highly commended award in the The Express ‘Business of the Year’ category.

Tanya and Ted Bailey from Caffe Crema were awarded the Mareeba Rotary ‘Customer Service Award’ by President of Mareeba Rotary Nina Grant.

Rachel and Levi Smith from Mareeba Working Dog Supplies were also awarded a highly commended award in the Howe Farming ‘New Business of the Year’ category.

What’s on at the Rising Sun Cinema One of the most talked about films of the year comes to Mareeba's Rising Sun Cinema this week . Set in rural Australia,THE DRESSMAKER, is based on the best selling book by Rosalie Ham and has an all star line up that includes Kate Winslett, Liam Hemsworth, Hugo Weaver and Judy Davis. It's the story of a glamorous woman who returns to her small hometown in rural Australia. With her sewing machine and haute couture style, she transforms the women of the area and exacts sweet revenge on those who did her wrong. THE DRESSMAKER starts in Mareeba at exactly the same time as the rest of Aussie. Also new on screen at The Rising Sun is the delightful comedy THE INTERN, with Robert De Niro and Anne Hathaway.

THE INTERN

70-year-old widower Ben Whittaker (Robert De Niro) has discovered that retirement isn't all it's cracked up to be. Seizing an opportunity to get back in the game, he becomes a senior

intern at an online fashion site, founded and run by Jules Ostin (Anne Hathaway).

Review by Louise Keller: Anne Hathaway lights up the screen in this likeable comedy in which work, purpose, life and love come under the magnifying glass. Nancy Meyers (The Holiday, It's Complicated) has written a wonderful screenplay, filled with observant truths as the price of success is considered and evaluated. Unlike her role in The Devil Wears Prada (2006) in which her ambitious graduate undertakes a Cinderella-like transformation, the journey that Hathaway's Jules Ostin, founder of a successful online fashion start-up undertakes, is almost the opposite. Here the work-obsessed, intolerant Jules is humanized, her life's choices scrutinized and vulnerabilities exposed. It's warm and funny, with its involving and amiable characters, delivering more than you expect. As for the dynamic between Hathaway and De Niro, who is the catalyst for change: it's delightful. Keep moving, is the message De Niro's 70 year old widower Ben Whittaker tells

himself, as he continually tries to keep busy, to fill the hole in his life since retirement and the loss of his wife. The early scenes when he takes on the position of Intern in Jules' everexpanding fashion company as part of a project for Seniors, is comedy at its most contrived, but things settle down as Ben makes himself indispensible to his new boss in her spacious, open-plan warehouse office. There's the harsh contrast of the old and the new as the former senior marketing executive of obsolete phone books tries to blend into a Google and Facebook environment. As Mr Congeniality, Ben impresses his colleagues by his classic, commonsense approach to life, business (and an impeccable dress code), he also becomes involved in Jules' personal life - with her ever-obliging, ever-tired house husband (Anders Holm) and adorable curly-haired daughter Paige (JoJo Kushner), who is almost too cute to be true. De Niro is an old hand at this kind of role - he has almost become a caricature of himself, with his terminal good natured grimaces. But he is a bit like an old shoe - familiar and comfortable. The romance with office masseuse Fiona (Renee Russo) ends up better than it begins. The funniest sequence involves a hare-brain escapade in which an email sent in error to Jules' mother has to be deleted. It's broad comedy at its funniest, the humour accelerating in delicious fashion as everything goes wrong. The scenes with heart play out well, too: the San Francisco hotel room scene in which Jules has a meltdown as she finally voices her inner most fears to Ben's sympathetic ears, is heartfelt and poignant, largely due to Hathaway's credible persona. The various subplots mesh nicely and there's a genuine feeling of bonhomie involving the entire cast. But it's Hathaway who carries the film squarely on her elegant shoulders and wins us fairly and squarely by a performance that she makes into something far more dimensional than the character Meyers has created on the page.

Giuliano Cordenos, of Mareeba, was recently presented with a certificate acknowledging 25 years of distinguished service as a Justice of the Peace in the state of Queensland.

The LAND KAP duo press Palaszczuk Government STATE independent crossbenchers Robbie Katter and Shane Knuth (both from the Katter’s Australia Party) have secured a regional-based focus from the Palaszczuk Government. A cross-partisan committee taskforce has been established, with the aim of tackling rural debt – and the feasibility of

Major partnership for Orora Limited

ORORA Limited has signed a significant strategic partnership deal with AHG Refrigerated Logistics, in which will be a major coup for the Tablelands. The deal will see customers – particularly within Mareeba – generate from several additional services, particularly in the fruit industry. Orora National Market Manager (Fruit & Produce and Meat, Orora Fibre Packaging) Andrew Russo said the company was delighted for Mareeba customers. “We’ve listened to our customers and are delighted to enhance our services by bringing additional infrastructure and greater choice in refrigerated trans-

port options to Mareeba as part of Orora’s long-term commitment to the region,” he said. Mareeba-based customers have come to receive excellent service and support from Orora, who are committed to providing corrugated fruit cartons, with an emphasis on cost-effective principles. “Orora and AHG will offer our Mareeba fruit and produce customers an end-to-end packaging solution for their produce, from carton to market in pristine condition,” he said. The partnership officially commenced last Monday.

Yarding down 143 in Mareeba THE EXPRESS reports agents yarded 889 cattle at the Mareeba Saleyards on Tuesday October 20, which was down 143 from the previous sale. A line of 19 C4 scores realised the 265.2c/kg mark, along with 3 C4 scores realising 260.2c/kg ($1,405.08). 8 heavier (600-750kg) steers were yarded this week

– and realised up to a total of 265c/kg – which held firm. Midweight cows were in good supply but dipped in value, with 1 D4 score hitting a total of 227.2c/kg. Lighter heifers were popular five D3 scores realised 245.2c/kg. Lighter bulls gained some prominence and sold to a top of 229.2c/kg. If you would like to nominate your cattle for any upcoming sale, please contact your local agent or the Mareeba Saleyards on 0439 737 175. Sales commence at 9am on Tuesday, with nominated cattle required by 7pm each Monday night (prior to the sale).

Make the meatballs:
 1. Preheat the oven. Spray a mini-muffin pan or baking dish with cooking spray. In a small bowl, stir together the milk and Panko breadcrumbs and let sit for 5 minutes. 2. In a large bowl, combine the ground chicken, garlic, ginger, soy sauce, salt and soaked breadcrumbs. Use your hands to thoroughly combine the meat mixture and then shape it into balls using 2 to 3 tablespoons of meat per meatball. 3. Place the shaped meatballs into the prepared pan and bake for 12 to 15 minutes until the meatballs are fully cooked. Make the sauce:
 1. Add the sesame oil and olive oil to a small saucepot over medium-low heat. Add the garlic and ginger and cook, stirring, for about 2 minutes until golden brown. 2. Add the red pepper flakes, orange marmalade and hoisin sauce, and cook, stirring occasionally, for 5 minutes until the sauce has thickened slightly. 3. Remove the meatballs from the oven and transfer them into a large bowl. Pour the sauce on top and toss to coat. Serve immediately.

Romantic dreams and creative plans may fill your head this week, giving you plenty of options for enjoying life and connecting with your more playful side. July 23 to Aug 22 Leo The focus certainly seems to be on home and family matters this week, which might also coincide with a concerted effort to get your place looking great. Aug 23 - Sept 23

EXPRESS sPORT Aussies through thanks to Panetta

By Justin Fris

TALENTED former Mareeba Bulls junior footballer Nicholas Panetta had a match only many of us can dream of (or only play via FIFA 16 on Playstation) in the final group match of the under 17 World Cup, netting an unforgettable brace during the Joeys’ historic 2-1 victory over Argentina, on Sunday. Mareeba supporters were on the edge of their seats during the course of the match and hearts were racing when Panetta scored his first goal in the 25th minute, with his second to follow in second half to give the Joey’s a victory. The Joey’s 2-1 win over Argentina and results of the Group E and Group F, mean the Joey’s are now through to the FIFA U-17 World Cup Round of 16

fixtures, the knockout stages. Panetta and his U/17 Australian Joeys teammates had a difficult initiation to the U/17 World Cup group stage in Chile. Australia was undoubtedly placed in one of the toughest groups ever drawn for any format of the World Cup finals, facing Germany, Mexico and Argentina. Tony Vidmar’s men began their campaign against Germany early last week, and found themselves on the wrong end of a 3-0 scoreline by half time. The Joeys would eventually pull a goal back in the 54th minute and Vitaly Janelt would complete the 4-1 rout for the victors, leaving Vidmar’s men with a massive hole to dig themselves out of against Mexico, who began their campaign with a 2-0 win over Argentina (La Albiceleste). The Joeys then faced Mexico last Thursday morning (Australian time) and fared marginally better, holding ‘El Tri’ to a 0-0 draw. Panetta started the match up front for the Joeys in view of family and friends, before being substituted in the 50th minute. Prior to their third and final group match on Sunday morning, the Joey’s were sitting 3rd in the group behind Germany and Mexico. The Joey’s will play on Thursday morning against Nigeria, in Vina Del Mar, at 9.00am QLD time. The game will be televised live on SBS or steamed live online.

Modern sporting miracle falls short

Leaps and bounds for Alterio By Justin Fris

DYNAMIC local athlete Dean Alterio recently returned from the U/12 state track and field championships, where he placed 3rd in long jump. It has been a memorable year for the youngster, who is also an accompolished futsal player at both state and national level. However all of his long jump success has been earned, with Alterio tinkering with his run up - after he began to have a little difficulty with his routine prior to the state championships. Once this was rectified, he managed to continue his progression as ‘one to watch’ for his age group throughout all track and

field-based competitions. “All the competitors have three jumps first,” he said. “Then, the top eight then go and have another three jumps (out of all Alterio’s jumps, he only fouled once). Although he succesfully qualified for the national track and field championships (to be held in Canberra), Alterio will have a series of education and futsal commitments that will potentially see him unavailable to participate. Despite this, his performances are very much on the radar of elite schools and athletics selectors. But for now, he is content to further his academic education, spend time with family and continue to advance his skills in athletics and futsal.

MUFC achieve success in ‘Old Mongrels’ carnival Ely Simmons looks to pass inboard during his side’s win over the MBA Deadleys. By Justin Fris

EXPRESS’S 11th hour bid for a run at the Mareeba Basketball League finals series fell agonisingly short last Thursday night, despite a memorable 54-45 win over the table topping MBA Deadleys. After doing all they could in one of the wins of the season, Express needed the Stingrays to defeat the Comets and consequently dislodge them from 4th spot. With the dream alive for almost two and a half hours, hopes were high. However the Comets eventually prevailed 42-39 and secured their finals spot. Thursday evening’s match between Express and the MBA Deadleys would have captivated even the most frugal of sporting minds. In essence, the MBA Deadleys should have done enough for the game to be in their keeping. Alas for them, they did not; and were mown down mercilessly in a blistering fourth quarter exhibition. Express knew that they would need a hard and fast start on offence (scoring attack) and they generated excellent presence in and around the glass (the hoop). Ben and Zach Macaulay were the focal point of attack for the Deadleys, who started the match a little sluggish in the scoring department. This trend would be hastily addressed in the second quarter, with the Deadleys putting on the shooting performance of the season. They turned a 12-10 quarter time deficit into a 10 point lead heading into the half, after going a scintillating 9/11 from their field goal attempts. Express would trail 28-18 with two minutes left in the quarter, before some nifty work from Daniel Vecchio-

Ruggeri and Ely Simmons trimmed the margin back down to single digits. Both sides huffed and puffed during the third, and the Deadleys set sail for home with a 12 point lead at the final change. Onlookers then witnessed one of the most remarkable turn of events seen in the league for several years. Having only managed to score 30 points in the first three quarters of play, Express torched the Deadleys for their below-par finish, piling on 24 unanswered points. Watching the Deadleys during this period was fascinating. Their heads began to drop, they began arguing amongst each other and they also appeared to have run out of ideas to stop the momentum of points against them. Among those watching on were the Red Devils, who in previous years have mastered the ability of a comeback under pressure. With the finals looming, it appears that the Deadleys may not have the nerve to close out important games. Only time will tell. The Red Devils are well and truly the form side of the league heading into the finals, after dishing out a surprising 73-27 hiding to title favourites, Hot Air. Coupled with the Deadleys losing, the Red Devils managed to rob top spot away from them, due to the sheer size of their win. Semi finals commence this week with the following matches taking place: (1st) Red Devils vs (4th) Comets and (2nd) MBA Deadleys vs (3rd) Hot Air. In the final round of ladies matches, the Baiada Steggles defeated Gummaz 40-32 and the Serial Killers sealed top spot with a 75-32 win. Matches are held at the Mareeba PCYC Sports Hall on Walsh Street, Mareeba.

THE Mareeba United Football Club achieved success in both ‘Over 35’ and Over 45’ components of the ‘Old Mongrels’ football carnival last weekend. Held at Stratford FC, the tournament gave us all a fantastic opportunity to witness former greats across FNQ go about

their business. MUFC’s ‘Over 45’s reached the semi final stage of their competition, but suffered defeat. No such issues eventuated for the ‘Over 35’s though, who defeated Edge Hill United 2-0 in the grand final.

EXPRESS sPORT Cooktown hold on in rugby league showcase Cooktown and Mareeba SHS players unite after the final whistle.

Ashton Cater (left) watchfully eyes his exhibiton opponent from Palm Island.

Crowds flock to Mareeba’s ‘Saturday Night Fight’ By Justin Fris MAREEBA was not short of activity last Saturday night, with locals flocking to the PCYC Hall for the Mareeba Amateur Boxing Club’s annual tournament. The audience was treated to a unique evening of local sport – with a range of boxers from across the Far North competing in the 11 bout card. Club officials were forced to endure a few late cancellations on the day of the event, which meant a few local Mareeba fighters were left high and dry without a fight. But this failed to dampen the occasion, with these fighters taking part in an extended exhibition component midway through the evening (including Ashton Cater, pictured). The evening began with young local talent Tristan Cater being awarded victory by split decision over Townsville-based Hayden McCarthy in their 41kg junior bout. Cater took a little while to get into the groove, however managed to set his feet and land some solid mid-range body jabs as the fight wore on. Fellow MABC club member Hank Kendall also managed to secure a victory by

spilt-decision over Palm Island’s Tuqiri Prior (67kg junior). Kendall’s positioning during the bout was the cornerstone of his victory. He would routinely work Prior against each of the four corners and unleash a juicy swipe each time. Damon Wessells (MABC) had no issues in romping to victory against Hamish Nelson (Yungaburra) in their 64kg junior bout. The fight would be stopped with 20 seconds left in the second round, with Nelson floored and dazed from Wessells’ unrelenting attack. Jamie Thomas (MABC) only needed 30 seconds into the first round to leave Thomas Nelson (Yunagburra) out of business in their 57kg junior bout. Equally impressive was Tarik Byrne, who dished out some excellent upper body hits on Richard Karpa, during their 71kg senior bout. But the most clinical punching display of the night was easily in the 9th fight of the card, with Cairns-based Roland Gallen demonstrating his ability in the ring against MABC’s Harlen Eales. MABC’s Hannah Hassem also acquitted herself well, however tasted defeat against Babinda’s Kiera Stewart Rade.

By Justin Fris COOKTOWN’s finest secondary school footballers held on for a gripping 34-32 victory over Mareeba State High School last Friday afternoon at a scorching Davies Park. The match was officiated by MSHS’s newly appointed Principal Scott Whybird - who is a level three accredited referee – and he was absolutely delighted with the packed grandstand of students. From the outset, it was obvious that Cooktown’s bigger bodies would cause the hosts some issues, particularly in the middle of the field. The visitors took an early lead and appeared to have solid control of the match. The heat continued to beat down for all players, who laboured hard and often. Mareeba sides are known for their spirit and positive mindset – and Michael Bozhoff’s men fought back and nearly stole the game away. Their comeback was spearheaded by Sullivan Hagai and Lucky Bagayawa – with a nifty young Douglas at fullback also ripping the goal line defence to shreds. Douglas would score a try with 90 seconds left in the

match, with the home side’s supporters rising as one. Unfortunately for sport romantics, Cooktown’s meticulous short grubber from the ensuing kickoff resulted in a knock on – and all chance of victory for the home side. Despite the result not going their way, Mareeba players were still jovial and shared laughter and stories with their opponents after the game. Sport plays a fantastic role in fostering key relationships - and this trait was on full display throughout. Mr Bozhoff said that he was pleased with the positivity within his side throughout the game, despite only really gelling over the past week. “The heat definitely took a toll on our defensive line speed,” he said. “But despite this, I was really pleased by the positivity shown. “‘Sully’ was great for us today – and another one of our real leaders today was Lucky Bagayawa – he came off the bench and his communication was simply outstanding.” Mr Whybird said he was heartened by the student cohort’s embrace of the concept and hoped that future events could occur in the not too distant future.

A dedicated team of 38 Mareeba athletes will compete in the ‘Great Barrier Reef Marathon Festival’ this Sunday, November 1, in Port Douglas. Under the guidance of local MPress personal trainer Tracey Brignolo, the group is both excited and prepared for the challenge that awaits them. “The festival has running distances of 5km,10km, half, full and ultra marathon,” she said. Ms Brignolo added that a few members of the MPress group would be participating in their first ever major running

event. “They have all been given a training program over a 12 week period – which is when we started training for the event,” she said. “We start up steadily, build up and then taper off hour training two weeks out.” Many group members will stay in Port Douglas on Saturday night, with others opting to leave Mareeba at 4am, for the 6am race start.
