Moving ceremony at Rocky Creek War Memorial
A special memorial service recognising National Service Day 2016 was held at the Rocky Creek War Memorial Park last Sunday morning. Facilitated by the National Serviceman’s Association of Australia (NSAA) – Tablelands branch, the ceremony saw 12 special plaques dedicated to members and supporters. NSAA Tablelands branch president John Hardy said: “It is a time to remember these ‘Nashos’; and in particular PTE Leslie James Weston, 2RAR who was killed in an ambush in Vietnam aged 21 on 30 September 1967. He is buried at the Atherton cemetery beside his WWII father.” Between 1951 and 1972, a total of 287,000 young Australian men were called up in two separate schemes for compulsory training in the Navy, Army and Air Force. In addition, in the second scheme, 35,000 men were called up to undertake alternative service in the Citizens Military Forces. 212 Nashos died on active service in Borneo and Vietnam under the Second scheme 1965-72. National Service was part of Australia’s defence preparedness for three decades.

Regaining confidence in the community FORMER Atherton Shire councillor Joe Paronella has thrown the Tablelands Regional Council mayoral race wide open, after signally his intention to run for mayor. Mr Paronella – who is currently the manager of the ‘Tablelands and Gulf’ division of Trans North Buses and Coaches – is a well known local businessman and musician. His current position in the transport industry follows a history of owning and operating a successful distribution company ‘Paronella Agencies’ from 1988 though until 2003.
These experiences have given him an appreciation and knowledge of all local communities throughout the Tablelands region. Along with his wife Wendy, he has been involved with many local groups and events over the past years, including the Atherton Maize Festival, Rocky Creek War Memorial Park, Tolga and District Lions and Tolga Historical Society to name a few. From 2000 through to 2008, he served as an elected councillor in the old Atherton Shire - under the highly respected leadership of Mayor, Jim Chapman.
Although he has stated for the last couple of years that he would not be standing for election, he says that he has been overwhelmed and humbled by the encouragement from locals across the region to put his hand up for the position of mayor. “It is only in the past two weeks that I reconsidered my decision not to run for the position of Mayor – and along with the full support of my wife Wendy – I have nominated as a mayoral candidate,” he said. SEVERAL Dimbulah State School students received some tips on media writing last Thursday morning. Currently embarking on an assignment which requires them to pen a feature article, the students listened intently as The Express’s own Justin Fris explained the differences between constructing news and feature articles. After an example of each genre was provided, students discussed topics about the specific language used, grammar and the importance of a strong, tightly worded lead. Once the assignment component of the presentation had concluded, the students asked Mr Fris about life in the media, conducting interviews and presenting a balanced and accurate article. “The most important part of any interview is to be empathetic and putting yourself in the interviewee’s shoes,” Mr Fris said. “You may be required to cover subjects that are difficult. “Respect is absolutely critical. You may not always personally agree with what the person is saying, but you must always strive to provide both sides of every story – this provides a balanced dialogue for the readership.” Prior to recess, some of the students offered some feedback, with many of them excited to test out their writing skills. “I enjoyed this morning because I learnt about news writing and how persuasive techniques can be used to make a story more positive,” Will Collins said. Destiny King – one of Dimbulah SS’s school captains – added: “I enjoyed learning about how to write a better feature article, along with tips to become a better writer as well.”

Paronella throws TRC mayoral race wide open FROM PAGE 1 “Should I be successful in gaining the position of mayor on March 19, I will be resigning from my position as manager of Trans North Bus and Coach. “Our three children and their spouses, along with our eight grandchildren, all reside, work and attend school in the local area; and I believe a new council with dependable leadership is required to take our communities into the future with confidence. “I would like to think that our grandchildren will be living in a vibrant, healthy and prosperous community well into the future.” He added: “From previous council experiences, I believe local government should be served by those willing to represent the electorate and carry out their duties without any particular allegiance to political parties or teams.
TRC Mayoral candidate Joe Paronella.
“One of my aims is to regain the respect of the community for the office of council, which sadly has been eroded in recent times. “I believe I possess the experience and professionalism to lead a new council during the next four years.” Mr Paronella’s nomination has breathed new life into the TRC mayoral election, with locals welcoming the announcement with optimism. Only time will tell what this announcement means for current mayoral candidates Rod Marti, Peter Hodge and Paul Kneubuhler. There is also great intrigue surrounding the status of current TRC Mayor, Rosa Lee Long, and whether she will nominate again. Regardless of the final nomination list, residents in the TRC are set for a new chapter in Tablelands folklore.
Bestmann void felt by patients An estimated 2000 people gathered at St Thomas’s Catholic Church last Wednesday, February 10, for the funeral of Dr Mark Bestmann. Friends of the Bestmann family including work colleagues, current and former patients and anyone who was touched by Mark’s extraordinary human nature, gathered to pay their final respects to a true champion of the people. The void left by Mark’s passing will be felt by the entire community – not just by his patients – but by everyone and anyone who is struggling with mental health. Dr Grant Manypeney – colleague, friend and business partner, spoke with The Express with the hope of putting some clarity to what Mark’s patients can do to continue their treatment and observation of their condition. “Mark Bestmann was a passionate doctor and cared deeply for patients dealing with complex mental health issues,” he said. “His knowledge of mental health made Mark the doctor that patients preferred. he was the ‘go to’ doctor and he made people
comfortable and related to their problems because he was going through similar issues. “His caring nature was at the forefront of his devotion to his patients; to the point where they became his friends. “His patients and indeed anyone in the community that requires help with mental health should continue to come into the clinic and see a doctor or continue to see their private GP, psychiatrist or psychologist so they can seek alternative care or discuss options for their continued treatment.” The need for a community gathering or forum in the next month or so for people with mental illness has been raised. The community gathering will feature professionals in their field including psychiatrist, psychologist, Queensland Health and other mental health organisations to help those in desperate need of information on mental health. The Express Newspaper will keep you informed on where and when the function will be held.
Caretaker conundrum across FNQ AS the weeks trickle away until Queensland’s local government elections on March 19, many may be unaware that local councils have gone into ‘caretaker’ mode. In simple terms, this means that councils have to adhere to particular guidelines, which are set by the Department of Infrastructure, Local Government and Planning. With these guidelines currently in place, The Express contacted several local councils in order to clarify their positions on the matter for our readership.
Cook Shire Council CEO Tim Cronin said it would be ‘business as usual’ for the Shire – albeit with a few exemptions. “It will be business as usual at Cook Shire Council during the caretaker period, apart from the halt on major policy decisions,” he said. “Council has, however, applied for an exemption regarding decisions on an important roadworks tender, as it is in the public interest for works to begin as soon as possible on the Shire road network.” A Tablelands Regional Council spokesper-
son outlined that councillors were expected to adhere to specific media conditions, as per the TRC’s ‘caretaker mode’ policy. “If a councillor is attending a media or public event during the caretaker period – and is asked a political question – he/she shall respond in their capacity as a candidate,” she said. A Mareeba Shire Council spokeswoman echoed several sediments shared by the other two councils – and outlined why the DILGP takes a dim view of electioneering.

ATTENDEES at last Wednesday evening’s ‘Breaking the Ice’ community forum appeared to have mixed feelings on the event. While several locals eagerly spoke with members of the provided expert panel, numbers gradually melted away throughout the evening, as many headed for an early exit. No one could fault the dedication, intention or application of any presenter or organisation – however recurring themes of long winded reports, national planning schemes and bureaucracy appeared at times to disenchant the audience. The evening was designed to cover the emergence of crystal methamphetamine (Ice) within Australian society. Presenters on the night included Dr Leann Mortimer (from the Alcohol Tobacco and Other Drugs Service), Detective Snr Sgt Kevin Goan (QPS) and John Harris (Crimestoppers). Each respective presenter aimed to cover the complex topic from their respective angle, with both communication and seeking support common themes.

Sample prices of Ice amounts bought and sold were also displayed, with the prices simply staggering. The room was aghast, when told an ounce of methamphetamine could fetch anywhere from $10-14,000. With each batch of methamphetamine produced, a substantial amount of by-product is produced. To put it in context, for every 1kg of the drug produced – roughly 6-7kg of waste by-product eventuates. This waste can have a deadly effect on humans in terms of contaminated services, especially in high traffic areas such as hotels. Crimestoppers chairman John Harris stole the show with his presentation, outlining a rare insight into how the organisation functions. “Crimestoppers is not the police,” he said. “It’s a phone number; a toll free phone number. We’ve got three organisations working together; the community, Crimestoppers and the police. “Why do we need Crimestoppers? Because someone other than the criminal has some information on the crime.” Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Tom Gilmore said he believed the evening was a
worthwhile exercise and felt that those in attendance got the information they needed from the evening. “I do not feel that those who left early showed disrespect at all,” he said. “I believe they simply got the information that they needed from the evening and chose to leave during the ‘Q and A’ component – which occured after the information presentations had concluded.” The overriding theme of the evening for families was to seek support from local services. Members of the expert panel suggested that talking about the issue with the impacted individual is potentially a first step on the road to getting themselves better and prospering again in life. Across the Tablelands, there are several community support alternatives for families impacted by Ice use. Some of these include: Mareeba – ATODS Mareeba Hospital (4092 9365) Mulungu (4092 3428) Atherton – Community Services Tablelands (4091 2850) Kuranda – Kuranda Neighbourhood Centre (4093 9833) Dimbulah – Dimbulah Health Centre (4093 5333).

FEDERAL Member for Leichhardt Warren Entsch believes the legalisation of medicinal cannabis would greatly support those battling terminal and chronic-based illnesses. Mr Entsch – who is one of the more open minded and progressive members of the Turnbull Government – said he believed the Narcotic Drugs Amendment Bill 2016 would provide a safe and secure avenue for people seeking long-term pain relief. “This is a very significant day, when medicinal cannabis is acknowledged as being a product that does make a real difference to people suffering a chronic condition or terminal disease,” Mr Entsch said. “I understand the Bill has the backing of the Opposition, so when successfully passed it will mean that patients and their family members will no longer have to hide in the shadows and source cannabis off the street, and law enforcement will no longer have to prosecute people who have bought cannabis - for medicinal pur-
poses - illegally. “I’d like to thank all the patients and families who have helped me on this journey and raised public awareness about their situations, in particular Lucy Haslam and her son Dan in New South Wales, Lanai Carter and her son Lindsay from Brisbane, and locally the Hickey family and Debbi Cliff.” The Bill was officially presented during parliament last Wednesday by Federal Health Minister Susanne Ley, who said: “I move now that this Bill be read a second time. “Deputy Speaker, the Narcotic Drugs Amendment Bill provides a clear national licensing scheme, allowing the controlled cultivation locally of cannabis for medicinal and scientific purposes. “Importantly, this Bill provides the critical missing piece for the commonwealth – to enable a sustainable supply of safe medicinal cannabis products to Australian patients in the future.”

Artists and kids combine to create art By Justin Fris
SEVERAL local artists and schoolchildren have teamed up to create a fantastic sequence of street art in Arnold Park, Mareeba. Under the watchful supervision of local artists and youth workers, the children were shown the finer points of aerosol-based art - and given an opportunity to participate in the project. Aerosol artist Dan Wallwork said the project was created to instil both pride and confidence amongst the children. “It was a very energetic project,” he said. “The artwork has a very individual feel and is ‘very Mareeba’. “It is all about showing that we are proud of where we are from and that the children could
learn in a controlled and supervised setting.” MSC Mayor Tom Gilmore and MSC councillor Karen Ewin attended a special ceremony last Wednesday afternoon, where they met with both artists and students; and congratulated them on their fantastic achievement. Glenys Pilat (MSC – Manager of Community Wellbeing) added: "Council recently contracted the Mareeba Information and Support Centre (MISC) to deliver a youth arts program (CAFÉ 2) during the January 2016 school holidays. “This program was funded through a Queensland Government grant held by Council - GraffitiSTOP Clean Up, Department of Infrastructure, Local Government and Planning. “The young people met at the PCYC sports
hall during January to produce the artworks. A six week after school program at MISC during February and March will see the creation of two additional murals. “These murals will be presented to the Chamber of Commerce for two businesses selected from their members. These murals will be displayed at their business and will have a theme of their choice. “MISC will host a combined ‘Best Neighbour in the World and CAFÉ 2 Open Day’ at Arnold Park on Wednesday March 30, between 10am-2pm. The Open Day will recognise national Neighbour Day and celebrate the achievements of the young people involved in the CAFÉ 2 program.”

Excitement in dairy community across the Tablelands
Kirsten Veivers is keen for local youth dairy farmers to join the YDN.
By Justin Fris
YOUNG residents across the Tablelands with a passion for dairy farming will have a great new forum to share and compare their thoughts on the industry. The support network dubbed ‘Young Dairy Network’ (which runs as an extension of the Subtropical Dairy Young Dairy Network) aims to link like minded individuals to work collaboratively. Tablelands local Kirsten Veivers – who has dedicated her life toward the industry – is tasked with the responsibility of co-ordinating the program for our region. Ms Veivers currently holds two titles, (Dairy Australia Extension Coordinator Subtropical Dairy FNQ and FNQ Young Dairy Network Coordinator) with both giving her a true indication of the industry’s pulse. She said the network was a fantastic opportunity for younger local dairy farmers to come together and maintain awareness of important trends within the industry. “We are always looking for new members,” she said. “Currently, we have 15 members, but we find that there are often many others working on farms that we may not know about.” Life in the dairy industry is not a 9-5 job. The hours are long and tasks are frequent. It is a job which requires total commitment, with no shortcuts. “Often I will get up at 3.45am and it’s not un-

common to return to the house at 6.30pm,” she said. “Obviously, this depends on the paddock work (for example fencing) and milking activity that is on for the day.” During 2016, members will be able to participate in a series of exciting events – with the topics covered all relevant to their trade. These include machinery maintenance, low stress calving and transition cow management. Members will be given an opportunity to learn and ask questions about any particular concerns. The dairy industry has faced several challenges in recent years, with employment shortages, de-regulation of the industry, along with an increasing trend of government’s and supermarkets attempting to import UHT milk over local produce. Lyn O’Conner – a former dairy industry leader across the Southern Tablelands – said she gave the YDN initiative a tick of approval. “I think it is great that the industry has reenergised the concept,” she said. “It’s a great program run by young people for young people. “Kirsten is a great, enthusiastic person who I think will do well in the role.” If you would like to learn more about the Young Dairy Network – Tablelands, you are welcome to contact Ms Veivers via email: kirsten@dairyinfo.biz or log on to www.dairyinfo. biz/young-dairy-network

FEDERAL Member for Kennedy Bob Katter has called for a religious crucifix to be placed atop Mount Bartle Frere – Queensland’s highest mountain. Located between Babinda and Innisfail, the mountain’s peak elevation is 1622m and is extremely popular to visit. Speaking to ABC Far North recently, Mr Katter said the monument would provide not only a fitting tribute to the 32 people who have lost their lives on the mountain, but could also increase tourism. “The idea is, if you want to see this beautiful artwork, you have to climb the mountain and do the spiritual adventure of climbing the mountain,” he said. “So it’s a journey in every sense of the word; its the highest mountain in Australia.” He added: “I think we’ve got enough money together to do the job – the artist is the best sculptor in the country. “She ‘won’ the job of doing the ANZAC piece for the war museum in Canberra, which is probably the most important artwork do be done in the last 10 years.” Initial feedback has centered around the size of the crucifix, which will be life size. This will limit the amount of the public who will be able to access and view it. “We thought about this very hard,” Mr Katter said. “We argued and talked about it a lot.” In coming weeks, Mr Katter will commence a vast tour across the Kennedy electorate, where he will meet face to face with locals and talk to them about their concerns. Mr Katter has held the federal seat of Kennedy since 1993 and will contest his seat again this year.

Celebrating success at MSHS By Justin Fris
MAREEBA State High School announced their 2016 student leaders last Tuesday afternoon, in a truly momentous occasion. In a tremendous initiative, the new crop of 2016 leaders were joined on stage by those who had gone before them the previous year. Previous MSHS leaders spoke about their experiences post-high school and what they learned from their time as a MSHS leader. MSHS Principal Scott Whybird said the experiences of former students would be extremely beneficial to the new leaders. “I thought it was really great to see the returning Year 12 leaders attend,” he said. “It was great to see the success shared. “It was a concept that I’ve never seen before, but I think it is a real credit to the values of both MSHS and the Mareeba community.” MSHS’s gifted and talented co-ordinator Christina Ellacott said the ‘dual purpose’ parade has been healthily embraced. “Invitations were sent out to all previous (2015) students who received an OP and accepted a place at university,” she said. “In 2015, 92 per cent of our OP eligible students received a place in university. It’s one of our best performing cohorts ever.” Ms Ellacott said the idea behind having the former students share their tertiary success with current students was a great opportunity for them

to see how far Mareeba SHS students can go. “It’s great that our former students can celebrate their success with our current students,” she said. “They can be reminded that their achievements are the ‘end goal’ – it’s what they are trying to achieve.” Prior to the concept, Ms Ellacott said school staff felt disappointed at times that they were not aware with how former students had progressed once they had left high school.
As you can imagine, the organisational process for the event is quite lengthy, but well worth the time and effort. “The process begins at the end of the year, where we collect the details of all students who are OP eligible,” she said. “Last Tuesday’s event saw 97 per cent of those invited attend. We even had a former student fly up from NSW just for the parade.” Once the official component of the parade

Racing minister flags breach of protocol ALP Racing Minister Grace Grace has admitted serious breaches of protocol in the appointment of Ian Hall as the acting head of Racing Queensland. Shadow Racing Minister Jann Stuckey said the revelations were detailed in a letter from the Palaszczuk Government Minister and again highlighted the complete lack of regard Labor has for Queensland’s racing industry. “I wrote to Grace Grace almost two months ago raising serious concerns over governance in Racing Queensland,” Mrs Stuckey said. “Her reply exposes that only now, after media

attention, has she asked Mr Hall to explain how he will manage potential conflicts of interest arising from the fact that he is a partner of KPMG, a company with links to international corporate betting giant, Sportsbet. “Surely these serious issues should have been canvassed before Mr Hall was appointed to lead Queensland’s billion dollar racing industry. “This is all the more important given Racing Queensland’s recent decision to reduce race field fees for corporate bookmakers such as Sportsbet.”

I've known Ravenshoe and Division 2 for over 11 years. I first visited the area while I was doing my ‘Grey Nomad’ tour and would come to Ravenshoe every year. I would stay for three months during the winter. About eight years ago, a opportunity arose that I could take a non paying caretaker position at the local motorcycle club. I was there for about seven years, then moved to where I’m living now in Ravenshoe. I do voluntary work for the St Vincent de Paul Society in Ravenshoe – first as an assistant in the shop, and then was invited to join the conference as a member. I accepted this position as I felt this would be a positive way of helping those less privileged than myself. In joining the conference, I got to meet many of our local community members either to give them a hand or just a friendly chat. I am also involved in several other community projects in a voluntary capacity. I enjoy working with our youth at the youth shed, the State High School ‘Breakfast Club’ and the chaplaincy committee. I volunteer for our historical steam train, help out at the monthly markets, Ravenshoe R.A.I.S.E., distribute local media and I’m also a member of the Ravenshoe RSL Citizens Auxiliary. I put my hand up to help out at the annual St Teresa’s School fete. If anyone needs a hand, most of the time they know were to find me. A little background history. I was brought up in Sydney, where I went to school completing my Year 10 certificate in 1980. I then started work in the funeral industry, where I worked for approximately 20 years. Additionally, I drove a limousine, driving officials to their appointments around Sydney. I also was a partner of an Indian restaurant at Caboolture in Brisbane for a brief time. I feel that Division 2 needs an independent voice. I’ve been speaking with other people in the region and they have outlined certain concerns. Some of these issues include: the rates that the local businesses pay, the diminishing services due to council staff redundancies, some of the poor local road conditions, general maintenance of parks, gardens, footpaths and general infrastructure belonging to the ratepayers. I also support an indoor heated swimming pool that would be beneficial to the community's health and leisure - and a safe place for our children to learn to swim. Mt Garnet is slowly dying, with business closing down. I will work with council to help Mt Garnet prosper again. I won’t run with a team - I will be independent. If you’re running with a team, you must follow the team rules; and a team has a leader, so all members of the team must follow the teams leader’s direction, even if you disagree with the team. As an independent candidate, I will only be answerable to the ratepayers and residents of Division 2, therefore I can act on your behalf; be your voice without having to put all issues to the team. This I believe will be a stronger & independent voice for Division 2. Please feel free of you would to discuss anything in relation with Division 2. I will make this promise that I will listen to all your concerns. David Armstrong Tablelands Regional Council Division 2 candidate.

Gold for Casali’s Casali’s in Mareeba has been awarded ‘Gold Status’ by Kubota Australia – the only Kubota dealer north of Bundaberg to receive this prestigious award. Receiving ‘Gold Status’ from Kubota does not come easy; and it’s been a combined team effort by all at Casali’s to transform the business over the past three years from a bronze dealer to now a top level gold Kubota dealer. Manager Alex Arena credits his dedicated staff and loyal customers for the success. “Receiving ‘Gold Status’ has been three years in the making and I thank my staff for their hard work and commitment to not only the business, but to our customers,” said Mr Arena. To receive ‘Gold Status’, the team at Casali’s had to meet a tough criteria which included: sales, workshop performance, customer satisfaction and general aspects of the business like signage and display. “It’s all part of providing a better experience for our customers,” said Mr Arena. “The workshop part covered criteria such as staff training, compliance, turnaround time on repairs, warranty and spare parts and we have put in considerable time and effort to make the workshop the best it can be for service and repairs,” said Mr Arena. One of the biggest accolades though would have to be that Casali’s scored over 94 per cent in customer satisfaction. Every time a Kubota product is purchased, the customer is contacted by a Kubota representative to record their experience with the dealer. Kubota Zone Manager, Jon Neville said for a business to receive over 94 per cent in customer

satisfaction is outstanding and shows their exceptional level of commitment to their customers. “Of all the criteria needed to receive ‘Gold Status’ with Kubota, customer satisfaction is one of the most important,” said Mr Neville. “It shows that Alex and his team really look after their customers; it’s not just about the sale to them, it’s about the whole customer experience.”
Meet Lenore – running for MSC Hi everybody – my name is Lenore Wyatt and I am an independent candidate in the upcoming Mareeba Shire Council elections on March 19. I’m often asked why I want to become a member of the Council and my response comes very naturally. As a fifth generation local, I live in Mareeba with my husband and kids – and I am committed to our community. I know how much potential the Mareeba Shire has for expansion and progress. As a Mareeba Shire councillor, I would be grateful to be part of the team that helps shape the future for the Mareeba Shire. A bit about myself in a nutshell, I’m a ‘doer’ who gets the job done. I’m not afraid to speak out and try something different. I’m young with some fresh and new ideas and I am passionate about wanting to make a positive difference in our community. I’m looking forward to the chance to work with many different people to make Mareeba Shire a top place to live and work and raise our families. I would like to see better roads across the Shire, together with the first section of the Mareeba Bypass, which will eventually be part of the Hann Highway project. I am excited about the upgrade

Over the past three years Casali’s has undergone a massive transformation. From one shopfront on Rankin Street, the business now has a main display and sales shop, two large workshops and an outdoor display area for equipment and now 19 staff that make up the team. Their expansion shows their belief and commitment to the area.
“We are here for the long run and we will continue to invest in our business for our customers,” said Mr Arena. “To receive ‘Gold Status’ proves that the hard work we have done over the past three years has been definitely worth it and I would like to thank our customers and the Tablelands community for their continued support.”

to the Mareeba airport and the positive impact it will have in the region. With the added influx of business and services, this could prove to be our shining light in our economic development. As an independent, I feel it’s imperative that the outlying towns and communities of the Shire don’t feel left out of the economic boom being experienced in the built up areas of the Shire. My over arching focus will be on our community and working with industries and infrastructure that can bring opportunities, while at all times making sure that there is definitely a focus on accountability. Another record falls in Mareeba THE EXPRESS reports agents yarded 108 cattle at the Mareeba Saleyards on Tuesday, February 9 – which was up 19 from the previous sale. Numbers gained slightly this week, although much to the delight of local graziers, big money and saleyard records again fell. The top billing of the morning fell to 10 D3 score yearling steers (200300kg), which realised a scintillating 321.2c/kg; ($937.90) a saleyard record. Midweight and heavier type steers were in solid supply, and gained substantially more this week. A line of 7 C3 scores realised to a top of 275.2c/ kg, along with 1 C4 score realising 261.2c/kg ($1,541.08). Lighter cows eased somewhat,
with 1 D4 scores fetching 228.2 c/kg ($780.44). Midweight yearling heifers were steady, with 8 D3 scores realising 240.2c/kg, while lighter bulls eased substantially and sold to a top of 207.2c/kg. With the heavy rain and added moisture in recent weeks, the grass has returned to a rich tinge of green - which is a definite benefit for both graziers and local cattle alike. If you would like to nominate your cattle for any upcoming sale, please contact your local agent or the Mareeba Saleyards on 0457 489 185. Sales commence at 9am on Tuesday, with nominated cattle required by 7pm each Monday night (prior to the sale).

TRC candidate Samantha Banks and daughter Sara.
DIVISION 4 TRC candidate Samantha Banks would love nothing more than a functional council for the region. An individual who is committed to helping others reach their dreams, Ms Banks said she was inspired to run as a councillor after learning about the current train wreck engulfing the TRC. “Like a lot of people, I have read the papers and been to a few council meetings and have seen that we could improve on what is currently happening,” she said. “After years of helping people on a one-to-one basis as a bookkeeper and registered BAS Agent (and being involved in community groups), I have come to the conclusion that I would like to work on the big picture. “I would like to help people to achieve their dreams - whatever it may be. Whether it is the pot hole that is driving them crazy or economic development to provide a solid foundation on which employment and entrepreneurial opportunities can be created. Local government is where you can help improve someone’s life.” In terms of key priorities, Ms Banks is a firm believer of economic development. She also has passion for preserving agricultural land and adopting safe environmental practices. “I am standing for a functional council, bringing a fresh face and new ideas, energy and a willingness to work together to achieve agreed outcomes. “I stand for economic development that has outcomes which are socially, economically and environmentally sound. “We need to protect our agricultural land and the right to farm. We have much to offer the world in terms of clean, green produce, but we also need to be smart about how we do this. She added: “There is always room for improvement. I am prepared to work with everyone who is elected and the highly qualified staff. It is in my nature to be cooperative and collaborative whilst ensuring that my voice is heard and quality debate is entered into to achieve the best outcomes.” Young voters are also of importance to Ms Banks, who said she believes that she can relate with their needs. “Many young people leave the area to work, travel, explore and learn,” he said. Not all want to stay or can stay, but we need them to bring their young families home and they need to make a good living. “I currently work closely with many in this age bracket. By working with them, I feel I have an understanding of what their concerns are, and their vision on how to shape the future of our region. “I believe we need to create an economic environment in which the youth will find employment and entrepreneurial opportunities. “I work with young parents (and students) at the Yungaburra P and C, with young entrepreneurs in Startup and Innovation Tablelands, with Malanda Youth from the Tablelands Youth Movement, to name a few examples.” Outside of her normal working life, Ms Banks has several interests – which centre around family and friends. She is optimistic about her future. “My personal interests are my family and friends, and a craft business I operate with my mother and a friend. “I am interested in my family history, of which we recently discovered a distant relative who operated the drapery shop in Malanda. I also enjoy my community volunteering with the Yungaburra State School P and C and scouting. “When we get the opportunity, we also love exploring our new home and make new discoveries of what this area has to offer.” She added: “I have a young family and we chose to move here. We intend to be here for the rest of our lives. I want to create a future not only for my children but for all families on the Tablelands, because we’re worth it and we live in the most beautiful place in the world.” Samantha Banks Tablelands Regional Council Division 4 candidate

Young blood needed in the changing game of local government TRC candidate Bronwyn Voyce.
Sunwater launches new safety campaign SunWater has recently launched a new safety campaign to remind the community about the risks of trespassing and the potential hazards when visiting dams, weirs and channels. SunWater Chief Executive Peter Boettcher said: “A restricted area may appear to be safe but tragedy can occur when you least expect it.
"We want all visitors to SunWater’s facilities to have an enjoyable and safe time which means that everyone needs to make safety their priority. “SunWater encourages the community to contact their local council for information on appropriate swimming locations or to visit our website for information on recreational facilities at SunWater dams.”
Need help with your child’s health? Professional health care you can trust... WELL known Tolga resident, Bronwyn Voyce, has announced her independent candidacy for Division 6 in the upcoming Tablelands Regional Council election. Ms Voyce adds a fresh face to the race and will undoubtedly raise the bar and change the game for the Tablelands Regional Council. Ms Voyce is an Atherton State High graduate with degrees in business, economic development (with Masters) and brings a unique combination of business, local government and leadership experience to the race. She has worked with SMEs as an agribusiness banker, been the CEO of a not-for-profit organisation, founded her consultancy business and is in the early stage of establishing edtech startup; and most recently spearheaded economic development at Cairns Regional Council. In 2014, she was named as one of the top 30 managers under 30 in Australia, by the Australian Institute of Management. Ms Voyce has a reputation as being a passionate advocate for regional and rural Australia and despite her modest age, already has number of runs on the board in the local leadership arena. She has represented FNQ at various state, national and international forums, is the current Deputy Chair at Regional Development Australia FNQ&TS and is now asking local constituents in Tolga, Tinaroo, Kairi, Walkamin and Rangeview to allow her to apply her talents locally and vote for her
as their voice and leader. Through her energy, business skills and economic development and innovation leadership, Ms Voyce wants to contribute to a new style of government in the region - one that is more engaged, more open, more efficient, more focused on the needs of today and more prepared for the opportunities of tomorrow. “Councils of today sit at the heart of community planning, service delivery and economic development. Ratepayers expect their councils to set the tone for cultural vibrancy and set the pace on innovation. “Our council must deliver more for less, act commercially yet be socially accountable, be highly-responsive and responsible, and build it better but more cost effectively. It needs to drive economic growth, create jobs, attract new investment, enhance social vibrancy, and generate better returns on public assets. “This requires a strong council with fresh energy and a new way of thinking.” Ms Voyce is urging Division 6 voters to consider whether they’re happy to accept the status quo or want a gamechanging local councillor with the skills to properly exercise their duties, plus the ability to think strategically about the region’s future. Bronwyn is thirty-one years old and lives on a family farm in Tolga with fiancé and third generation potato farmer, Adam Cuda, and their dog Stella.
Mareeba Shire under NBN spotlight If residents are seeing NBN trucks around the Mareeba Shire, it’s because the NBN has started on more construction in the region. Construction started on NBN fixed wireless facilities to service more than 500 premises in Dimbulah and Speewah South late last year. Additionally, fixed wireless facilities to service 300 premises in Kuranda and Kowrowa will start construction in the second quarter of 2016. In Kuranda, construction is also scheduled to start in the third quarter of 2016 on nbn fibre to the node technology for 1000 residents and businesses. Following Kuranda, the next town in nbn’s sequential build program is Mareeba, with nbn fibre to the node construction expected to start for 4100 premises in the first half of 2017. NBN corporate affairs manager for Queensland, Kylie Lindsay said this was

exciting news for residents and businesses in the Mareeba Shire Council area. “This is great news for Mareeba Shire as access to fast broadband is designed to provide a range of benefits for homes and businesses such as improved opportunities to work from home, better access to online education tools and more options for on-demand entertainment. “Once these areas are ready for service, whole families will be able to be online at the same time, using multiple devices and all enjoying the same fast speeds. “And for businesses, be it e-commerce, sending and receiving files, accessing online services, internet and data security, cloud based sharing or communicating with staff and customers, all aspects will be faster and more efficient with the NBN™ network.” More information on the NBN™ and rollout areas is available at: http://www. nbnco.com.au/maps

Billy Gordon – get to work I noticed in last week’s paper our previously invisible member Billy Gordon has had a change of heart and now wants to do something for the people of Mareeba. That is very noble of him - but wasn’t he elected a year ago? What has he been doing over the last 12 months? Apart from attracting the attention of national newspapers over his photographic ability, has he done anything positive instead of voting with his beloved Labor Party on almost every motion in Parliament? He had a chance to get more state representation for people living outside of bigger cities; but no, he voted with the ALP to water down rural representation and give three more seats to Brisbane. By continually voting with the ALP, he will get himself voted out at the next election when the electoral commission changes the boundaries in the electoral redistribution, expected in August. I have been told that Atherton will be added to the Cook electorate again and their seat of Dalrymple will be abolished. It is not hard to work out who the Atherton people will vote for. He might find himself running against their excellent politician Shane Knuth - from whom I have been getting help in dealing with the government. I doubt Mr Gordon will get much support from Mareeba people either in the new electorate, because Mr Knuth has been their defacto member since Mr Gordon was elected. Keith Courte JP, Mareeba
Appalled by TRC councillors As a concerned ratepayer of previous and present Atherton, amalgamated and TRC councils (and as a businessman and ratepayer for some 50 years), I am appalled by the standard of local governance of the present TRC. The Mayor and her casting vote, assisted by councillor Stocker (in my opinion, his use-by date has passed), who I believe was made deputy to shore up Mayor Lee Long’s power base (when many felt Cr Linwood had loads of experience, and ability and should have been the obvious choice); along with the wannabe mayor (Cr Peter Hodge) make up the Mayor’s power of bloc voting. A sense of fair play, co-operation and respect of other people’s ideas and feelings, seem to be lost by our mayor. Councillors Linwood and Pagani certainly may have a case of workplace harassment and bullying against Mayor Lee Long. The CEO’s performance needs to be looked at, amongst this sorry state of affairs. Mr Church is number one - does he not have

the ability or the will to right the ship? Or does he dance to the mayor’s tune? Such a toxic environment pervades our TRC that one hesitates to reveal that he lives in Atherton. Business and investment has deserted us big time. I look to the council elections for fair and independent representation. If you vote for a wannabe mayor and his team, you may get more of the same shameful local government as displayed by our Current Administration. The ruling power base of Mayor Lee Long (along with Cr’s Stocker and Hodge) should be ‘workshopped’ as Hodge puts it. Doug Seawright, Atherton
Pagani returns Lee Long serve I refer to Cr Lee Long’s letter last week. What a pity she doesn’t get her scribe to check the facts before making baseless allegations. Her inexpert attempts to allege I have breached confidentiality would be comical (particularly as she has some real familiarity with being the subject of breach of confidentiality investigations) if it were not serious. If she had bothered to ask me, or the reporter, she would have discovered that I did not speak to the reporter at any time about the closed session: the reporter was present at the meeting. He clearly (and accurately) observed both the motion I put, favouring a proper wage increase for staff, and the one which passed, wherein the mayor voted for a ridiculously inadequate increase. There was, and is, nothing confidential about motions being put and the content thereof. Further, her assertion that I was ‘completely false’ in stating there had not been a pay increase for three years shows she is either so hell bent on attacking me as to be blinded by the truth, or simply cannot add up. The last pay rise for staff was in June 2013 – we are now in the year 2016 : 6-3 = 3. She should consult council records to ascertain the date of the last pay rise before she shoots off in her usual uninformed way. Or perhaps she thinks readers are so unsophisticated that they won’t notice that her June 2014 date was NOT the date of the last pay rise? Fortunately, staff will only be subjected to these practices for a short while longer. Marjorie Pagani, TRC Division 6 councillor
Swipe at Cr Stocker’s role In response to Cr Geoff Stocker’s letter in a murdoch publication 08/12/15 - you must really believe that we, (the ratepayers) are just a lot of rednecks. The whole purpose of your posturing and grandstanding and selfpromotion was no doubt to convince us that
you, Cr Peter Hodge and Mayor Lee Long are the only ones that know how to run the TRC. Nothing constructive has been done or created by your crowd (of 3) in the present term of this council. Many potential residents and investors have been turned off by the perceived autocratic mayor and her puppets. You talk of expanding agriculture and food production. Was it you and your cronies who pushed hard to subdivide 75 acres of prime agricultural land that the State Government had already stopped? You pushed hard for the subdivide overlay on the acre blocks. How many potential one acre block dwellers did you chase away? You voted with your lot, to give $25,000 to some faraway committee, for the input of yourself and Mayor Lee Long (expenses paid of course). Try telling the cattle farmers along Gunnawarra Road, how this talkfest will help them! Help them cross the bridges to take your expanded produce to market! Your despicable attitude towards councillors Marti, Linwood and Pagani is to be abhorred and treated by all and sundry - 100% contemptible, gutter politics in your finest hour. Were you subjected to the same rigorous requirement that Cr Pagani has had to go through regarding council meetings attendance, when you took leave of absence from council duties for such a long time? Councillors Pagani and Linwood have a strong case of workplace bullying against you, Cr Hodge and Mayor Lee Long. The looming council elections will hopefully see the last of the Lee Long dominated council. Doug Seawright, Atherton
Tablelanders, vote wisely I hear that the upcoming elections are relatively predictable for the Mareeba Shire Council (MSC). We on the southern side of the border are experiencing quite a different phenomenon with candidates popping up out of the rainforest like a flock of cockatoos. The MSC seems to be in a sweet spot of stability. The Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) on the other hand has had a period of anything but smug stability and that situation looks as though it has contributed to a growing field including excellent candidates. I personally see some highly qualified candidates. Many Tablelands born and bred, as well as many attracted to our splendid shire from further afield. Regardless of origin, many of our candidates are not only of a professional capacity exceeding that which I have seen in my 45 years on the Tablelands, but also dedicated to a better TRC as a whole rather than to leveraging some familial, group, divisional, or even personal
advantage. Can this be a fresh breeze of change coming out of the stagnation of a troubled period of our history? It is up to the voters of the TRC to scrutinise the pack carefully, to note that voting for friends or clans is no longer a viable option as councils are now businesses rather than fiefdoms, and to vote for one of the many capable, collaborative candidates, rather than falling back on the lazy option of voting for mates, familiar names, or perceived or promised benefits post-election. And read your local and Cairns papers! Read pertinent documents from Hansard! Do your research! Don’t depend on hearsay! TRC needs professionalism and good process, vision and vitality, cooperation with a tolerance for rigorous debate but no opening for factionalism or personality parades. Vote wisely, Tablelanders. We need consultative leaders who have an ear for every voice plus an ability to make decisions that benefit the whole TRC for now and into the future, for us and for our grandkids. This is not a popularity contest but a serious decision about who can unite the shire and take it forward. Christine Doan, Atherton
Inspirational Queenslanders I am writing to share the inspirational story of this year’s Young Australian of the Year award recipients. Nic Marchesi and Lucas Patchett are two young socially-minded Queenslanders who have used their time, energy and entrepreneurial spirit to help the homeless. In 2014 they created the world’s first free mobile laundry service for homeless people called Orange Sky Laundry. This simple concept is helping to restore dignity for some of Australia’s most disadvantaged people. Through this service homeless people can now regularly access a laundry service for clothing and other items such as blankets and towels. The service has also been used in recovery efforts following natural disasters such as floods and bushfires, helping people impacted by these disasters access a basic and much-needed service. The founders of Orange Sky Laundry have demonstrated extraordinary passion, kindness and generosity, as well as a great deal of business acumen to get this concept off the ground. Both Nic and Lucas are fantastic role models for our young Australians. Senator James McGrath Assistant Minister to Prime Minister LNP Senator for Queensland

DIRTY GRANDPA
Jason Kelly (Zac Efron) is one week away from marrying his boss' uber-controlling daughter, putting him on the fast track for a partnership at the law firm. But, when the straight-laced Jason is tricked into driving his foul-mouthed, ex Army General grandfather, Dick (Robert De Niro), to Daytona for spring break, his pending nuptials are suddenly in jeopardy. Between riotous frat parties, bar fights, and an epic night of karaoke, Dick is on a quest to live his life to the fullest and bring Jason along for the ride. DEADPOOL
A former Special Forces operative turned mercenary (Ryan Reynolds) is subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers and adopts the alter ego Deadpool. Review by Andrew L. Urban: Deadpool is the dead cool, foul mouthed antihero eager for revenge against the man who deformed him. It may not be original, but what the film lacks in freshness it makes up in cinematic bravura, from 'breaking the fourth wall' (talking to the audience) to self referential nonsense amidst violent mayhem. References to X-men also abound, often with pejorative subtext. While all that stuff works for a laugh, it tends to detract from the film's grip on our emotional investment. Of course it's not to be taken seriously, with plenty of comic book characters and scenes. I marvel at Marvel's ability to have conjured up such diverse superheroes ... and such a subversive one, too. But ultimately the film is a freak show, a novelty number which parades the film-makers' raft of crafty devices from extreme stunts to extreme violence. Ryan Reynolds plays it for fun, constantly in our face as the unhappy victim of a gross injustice. Bad enough to be diagnosed with cancer, succumbing to the temptation for a sensational cure, he is shown the cruelty of man. And fate. There is the gorgeous Morena Baccarin as his love interest, considerable sex talk, and even some sex, and the pace is furious. It promises its fans a wild, fun, escapist ride - and on that it pretty much delivers, with snappy dialogue and first class effects.

A good, safe, social environment at Atherton Turf Club PHOTOS BY PETER ROY
By Justin Fris
THE Atherton Turf Club (ATC) has enjoyed a bumper program of quality race meets over summer, with delighted patrons voting with their feet. Last December, the club saw a record crowd attend its monthly meet, with 1100 people lapping up trackside delights. But it is not only the spectators who attend the meets that enjoy themselves. For ATC volunteers, trainers, owners and jockeys, it is a way of life. ATC promotions and communications officer Terry Ayliffe is one of these volunteers, who ensures that race goers receive a quality hospitable
experience. Mr Ayliffe explained that many spectators to ATC meetings travel from all across the Far North – with a solid blend of age groups. “We regularly see people attending our meets from places such as Port Douglas, Cooktown, Cairns, Mossman and Mareeba,” he said. “We are also seeing a lot more of younger people coming along for the social atmosphere. We provide a good, safe environment where they can relax and enjoy themselves.” For many women across the Far North, ‘Fashions on the Field’ is always eagerly anticipated and 2015/2016 has been a stellar year for the con-
cept. “The women have really dressed up this year,” Mr Ayliffe said. “This causes a real chain reaction, as local businesses (for example hairdressers, clothes shops) can receive extra business in the lead up to a local meet. “At the end of the day, it’s all about locals helping locals.” Proposed cuts to country racing by the Palaszczuk Government are widely understood by those in the industry, however many local Tablelands residents are only now becoming aware of the present situation. “I believe roughly 90 per cent of attendees to
our meets probably have no idea about the proposed cuts to country racing,” Mr Ayliffe said. “However, more and more are starting to realise now and they are doing what they can to promote country racing and the current situation. “If country racing can be managed well, it could grow. It could be a bigger industry, with the flow on effects (for example, employment) significant – especially in the bush.” The Palaszczuk Government initially appointed Bill Byrne as Racing Minister in 2015. Mr Byrne was removed of this portfolio, with Premier Palaszczuk appointing the Member for Brisbane Central, Grace Grace, late last year.

GOOD times rang around the Mareeba Turf Club over summer, with healthy attendances and happy people packing several race meetings. Despite the murky nature of proposed cuts to country racing by the Palaszczuk Government, thousands of people from across the Far North united together to express their love for a day out at the races. Mareeba Turf Club official John Thurlow took great heart from the festive season period, with crowd numbers up across the board. “The crowds for all of our recent meetings were excellent,” he said. “Naturally, the only challenge was our Australia Day meet due to the weather. “There’s not much you can do when you have to transfer a meeting, but the
crowd numbers were still very good. “Our ‘Mareeba Annuals’ and Boxing Day attendances were up by 200 each last year – Boxing Day in particular, we sold 50 marquees and were virtually running at full capacity.” Mr Thurlow – a passionate racing man and dedicated volunteer – spoke about the far reaches that country racing can provide for a local community. “At our ‘Annuals’ last year, we had some people travel up from New South Wales and Victoria, just for the meet,” he said. “They were up here taking their holidays in the Far North and thought they’d make a real weekend of it by heading to Mareeba for the event.”

Fury-ous display by rampant Heat By Justin Fris
THE FNQ Heat displayed merciless efficiency during their 6-0 pre season victory over a below-par Northern Fury last Saturday afternoon at West Barlow Park. Despite only having nine shots on target for the match, the hosts converted six into goals – with the finishing straight out of the top draw. Ian Ferguson’s (Fury) men controlled possession for lengthy periods of the match, however their inability to play out from the back and create quality attacking moves cost them dearly. The home side began the match in a confident manner, even without possession of the ball. They routinely forced the visitors to play long balls into congested areas, which yielded few positive forays forward. From the off, it appeared glaringly obvious that the hosts felt more secure under pressure. Passes reached their targets, which led to several Fury players venting their frustration. After gradually working his way into the match, Josh Pin caused several headaches for the visitors’ defence – including the Heat’s first goal in the 17th minute. Winning the ball in the middle of the park, Kieran Sanders provided a delightful through ball to Pin, who danced his way through the penalty area. He appeared destined to score, before he was mown down in the 6 yard box by a surging Fury goalkeeper. The resulting spot kick was coolly taken by Jamie Gosling, who earmarked his shot into the bottom right hand corner. Once in the lead, the Heat began to thoroughly express themselves, with Mareeba talent Jamie Carroll doubling their advantage only seven minutes later with an absolute peach of a volley. With the game seemingly slipping away, Fury players
began berating each other – which led to the hosts sealing victory with a minute left in the first half. Carroll doubled his tally with a memorable 20m curving effort that Roberto Carlos would have been proud of, with Bronson Koppen adding his name to the scoresheet only a minute later. Despite leading 4-0 at the break, Perry Krakowczyk (who was filling in for Tim Campbell) was keen for his charges to keep the momentum going and finish strong. These desires would be met in the 58th minute, when excellent teamwork and delivery resulted in another splendid goal. After being provided with a tantalising cross, exciting midfielder Shimon Watanebe took advantage of the Fury goalkeeper nestling outside his own penalty area, and safely rounded him en route to goal. Watanebe then unselfishly pulled back a clinical pass to Sanders, who buried his 20 yard drive with ease. The final 20 minutes of play was very untidy by both sides, as tired legs and poor decision making came to the fore. After the victory, Krakowczyk said: “Obviously as a coach, if you win a game 6-0 you have to be pleased. “I think we played very good football for 60-65 minutes; but the last 20-25 minutes we got a bit sloppy. We were 6-0 up, so we need to work on that. The game goes for 90 minutes, so we need to work on playing football for 90 minutes.” Krakowczyk added that special emphasis had been placed on clinical finishing during the week at training and he was pleased with the conversion of quality chances into goals. The Heat will conclude their pre season campaign this weekend with a trip to Nick Brko Field, where they will face FNQ Premier League side, Stratford.
Mareeba United Football Club – Junior sign-on day saturday, February 13
Gators kick off pre-season THE Mareeba Gladiators officially began the match component of their 2016 pre season schedule, with participation in last weekend’s Edmonton 9’s rugby league carnival in Cairns. With several modified rules, the concept is a fast, entertaining brand of rugby league – with speed and skill rewarded on a regular basis. Beginning their campaign on the Saturday morning, the Gladiators tasted a 23-8 defeat against Mossman/Port Douglas. Josh Stowers’ men would bounce back quickly, defeating Buredikin 25-17, before adding another victory (29-7 against the Edmonton Lightning) and defeat (20-4 against the Edmonton Storm) to their copybook. While going to print, the Gladiators were midway through their semi final match.

Still time to sign up and play Hockey in 2016 THE Atherton Tablelands Hockey Association held their first of two sign-on days last Sunday. While the first day was a great success, more players are still needed to fill teams in most divisions; and it’s not to late to sign up. The second sign on day will be held this Sunday, February 21, at the Loder Park Hockey Club fields from 10am to 2pm and everyone is welcome.
