Local farmers with national goals

Walkamin locals Krista and Robert Watkins have recently returned from Brisbane following the Premier of Queensland’s Export Awards.

The husband and wife’s business, Natural Evolution, was recognised as a prominent up-and-coming business and received the accolade for emerging exporter.

The company was also a finalist in this year’s sustainability category, which they won back in 2016.

Natural Evolution uses wasted fruit and vegetables and turns them into food protein powders and other natural products produced here on the tablelands.

Their innovative work has pioneered a new industry for agriculture with explosive outcomes, even attracting international visitors for their unique technology and products.

Being a local farmer, founder and Head of Innovation Robert Watkins never forgets his roots; banding together with local farmers and buying their otherwise unused and discarded bananas has helped grow the strength of the local agriculture community.

Mr Watkins was ecstatic about this award and what it meant to his company.

“It’s great to be recognised for the hard work and effort in getting this project from an idea to the international stage in just two years,” he said.

“We are grateful for the support and are always striving to better agriculture.

Natural Evolution has now finished designing and running a new dryer technology along with a new specialised company that is dedicated to the recovery of farm resources and turning that into product.

Along with interests in

growing the agriculture business in the Far North as a whole, the Watkins’ now also have their sights set on crops including everything from mushrooms to broccoli, potato, beetroot and many more.

Natural Evolution’s start was a rocky one but with support from the State and Federal Governments, it has grown into the

powerhouse superfood supplier we see today.

“People laughed at us when we came up with the idea for the product,” Mr Watkins said.

“We started this from an idea that was fuelled by our passion and that enabled it to succeed.

“We would like to thank the people that believe in us, including our customers, friends,

other local farmers and the great team working at Natural Evolution.”

Mr and Mrs Watkins have also been entered into the National Ernst and Young EY Entrepreneur competition as well as being national finalists for the Disruption Award in Sydney at the end of the month.

Mareeba student takes home top honour in literary competition Olivia Soncin of St Stephen’s Catholic College has claimed top honours in a prestigious state-wide literary competition, which was held in Brisbane on 16 October.

The annual Literary Competition unearths some of the

country's youngest and brightest literary talents and is run by the Independent Education Union of Australia – Queensland and Northern Territory Branch (IEUA-QNT) — and supported by the English Teachers Association of Queensland, James

Cook University and Penguin Random House Australia. Olivia received First Place in the category Years 9-10 Poem for her work Slaves of Fashion.

Competition judge Ross Allen was highly impressed by Olivia’s entry.

“This poem is cohesive, fully resolved with all aspects integrated into a well-rounded statement of its theme – the exploitation of young children in the sweat shop clothing factories in the third world,” said Mr Allen.

“The poet’s emotional con-

nection and empathy for the lives of these children is evident in her impassioned frustration that these children are denied fulfilment of their potential schooling and learning.”

Local calls for changes to disability parking permits

Member for Hill Shane Knuth with Atherton local Leonie Barber, both of whom are fighting to have changes made to the current Australian Disability Parking Permit Scheme to allow visually-impaired people park in disabled car parks.

ATHERTON local Leonie Barber is making a passionate call for changes to be made to the Australian Disability Parking Permit Scheme.

Ms Barber, 74, has less than two per cent of her vision and requires the assistance of her Seeing Eye Dog, Tara.

Ms Barber recently applied to the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads for a disability parking permit, however her application was rejected as her vision impairment wasn’t deemed to be impacting her mobility.

Under the current ADPP Scheme, the assessment process is based on an applicant’s functional ability to walk; as they are required to meet one of the following eligibility criteria: 1. Must be unable to walk and always require the use of a wheelchair; or 2. Their ability to walk is severely restricted by a permanent medical condition or disability; or 3. Their ability to walk is severely restricted by a temporary medical condition or disability, of at least six months duration, as certified by a doctor or occupational therapist.

Given the above criteria, persons with intellectual, psychiatric, cognitive and sensory impairment (such as vision impairment) alone do not meet the eligibility criteria unless they also have a mobility impairment

“It’s unfairness like that which is why I refuse to give up.

“I’m a resilient person and we as blind people need this so I will keep fighting.”

Ms Barber said she would like to thank Nick Dametto, Member for Hill Shane Knuth and support organisation Blind Citizens Australia (BCA) for helping her cause.

Ms Barber also took time to thank her Seeing Eye Dog Tara, a companion in her life that she noted she wouldn’t be able to live without.

“Tara has been an integral part of my life since I got her in 2015,” she said.

“I feel safe with her – she’s an extremely clever dog and like my child; I don’t know what I’d do if she wasn’t in my life.”

Ms Barber’s cause was assisted last week as Shane Knuth MP tabled the Transport Legislation (Disability Parking Permit Scheme) Amendment Bill 2019 in Parliament.

If passed, this would enable vision-impaired people access to disabled parking.

“We’ve been bringing this issue up for quite some time now, as when we found out that visually-impaired people are excluded from the disabled parking scheme, we couldn’t believe it,” Mr Knuth said.

“This scheme should have included visually-impaired people many years ago, so congratulations to Nick Dametto and the KAP for bringing this issue to light and pursuing it.”

Ms Barber said the current scheme is grossly unfair.

“It’s discriminatory,” she said.

“I don’t know where people get the idea that blindness is a secondary disability as considering I only have less than two per cent vision; I think it’s fair to say that my mobility is affected.

“So I want to see politicians develop those criteria, as amendments to the parking scheme will make visually-impaired people’s lives so much safer.

“Being required to get myself and Tara out of a standard car park means I’m very vulnerable to being in an accident.

“Therefore it would give me peace of mind and greater safety if I were in a disability park right near the entrance of a complex.”

Ms Barber said her fight for changes to the scheme is not only for herself, as a similar story in Hinchinbrook was reassurance to her that something needed to be done.

Two young Hinchinbrook girls Arliyah and Mackenzie are both legally blind and had their application rejected for the same reasons as Ms Barber, forcing KAP Hinchinbrook member Nick Dametto to table an e-petition in Parliament which garnered more than 2300 signatures.

Ms Barber said to deny those two young girls with a disability parking permit is criminal.

Irrigators call for affordable, reliable and equitable future water security Far North Queensland irrigators and urban water users say the solution to the region’s long-term water security must be affordable, reliable, equitable and safe.

Key stakeholders – the Mareeba Dimbulah Irrigation Area Council (MDIAC), Mareeba Shire Council and Cairns Regional Council – recently met to unify their approach to securing a solution, as the region’s half a billion-dollar agricultural industry cries out for more water.

They want long-term water infrastructure projects to be affordable for water users, particu-

larly the agricultural industry, reliable, equitable to both grower-irrigators on the Atherton Tablelands and water users from the Cairns region, and safe.

The united front comes after the Queensland Government released the business case for the proposed Nullinga Dam on the Walsh River, near Mareeba, which revealed the high cost of water allocations based on a full cost recovery methodology.

MDIAC chair Joe Moro said water affordability was critical to Atherton Tableland farmers.

“The Nullinga Dam business

case showed the cost of water would start at around $15,000 which is grossly prohibitive for farmers,” Mr Moro said.

“Without a reasonable subsidy from the government, it’s unlikely farmers would be able to afford to purchase water allocations. “This is particularly relevant for the cane industry and other high-value crops like horticulture.”

Mr Moro said the administrative costs associated with running the proposed dam raised concerns, with the business case suggesting the annual operating

costs of around $3200 per megalitre.

He said the Nullinga business case adopted a full cost recovery approach with no direct investment by either the Queensland or Federal governments.

“This is inequitable and contrary to the approach adopted for other long-term infrastructure project such as roads,” Mr Moro said.

“Investment in long-term water projects is the core role of both levels of government and is needed to ensure farmers are able to access water at a price that is

both fair and affordable.”

There are also concerns around the quality of the water from the catchment of the proposed dam, which starts at Irvinebank, a former mining area.

The region’s agricultural heavyweights have long mooted the proposed dam as part of a three-pronged approach to shore up the region’s long-term water supplies.

They also want the North Johnstone River diversion proposal to be properly investigated and considered, as viable shortterm option while longer-term

projects are developed and constructed.

Mr Moro said water was the lynchpin of the region’s agricultural industry.

“The industry is worth more than half a billion dollars, with growth showing no signs of easing on the back of increased plantings across several commodities,” Mr Moro said.

“Yet the uncertainty surrounding the region’s long-term water security is casting a massive black cloud over the future of agriculture and the communities that rely so heavily on it.”

VIOLENCE against correctional officers is a scourge that continues to plague Queensland prisons, and family members of Queensland Corrective Services (QCS) employees are speaking out to ensure improved systemic safety measures are put in place to protect their loved ones.

One such family member is Nicole, the wife of a Queensland prison officer whose husband was assaulted by an inmate roughly five years ago.

Nicole’s husband had faeces thrown in his face, resulting in more than 10 months of hygiene testing that cost their family in excess of $8000.

“Because the prisoner was Hepatitis C Positive, it was months of testing which meant we had to put our life on hold,” Nicole said.

“In addition, you go through a two-year court process only to find out the prisoner gets off – it’s completely wrong.”

Nicole said she would like to see a mandatory sentence of 14 years implemented for prisoners who unlawfully assault a working corrections services officer, up from the seven-year sentence which is currently in the Criminal Code.

“I want to see the same sentencing laws for those people who assault prison officers as that of police and ambulance personnel,” she said.

“If a police officer is seriously assaulted, it makes national news as it should.

“However, when it’s a correctional officer, no-one seems to want to know or seems to care – I’m fed up and it needs to change.

“I’m sick of my husband and his colleagues being treated as punching bags and not having anything done about it in the way of punishment.”

Nicole has not been the only person to speak out on this issue, with a number of strikes having been held by correctional officers and unions across the state for improved working conditions – including multiple rallies outside Lotus Glen Correctional Centre.

When looking at the statistics, it’s clear to see why there’s such a strong movement growing among QCS employees, as there have been 170 incidents of assault recorded against prison officers since January 1 of this year (As of last Friday).

That’s more than one assault every two days.

It’s not only the physical aspects of the assaults that have an impact on officers, as they take arguably an even bigger toll mentally.

“There are some days where my husband won’t want to get out of the car,” Nicole said.

“Sometimes he comes home from two or three days of long shifts and he’s not the same person he was before which has an enormous effect on our family.

“Hopefully with increased sentencing and improved protective measures in place it can deter prisoners from engaging in violence, which will in turn be enormously beneficial for officers’ physical and mental wellbeing.

“But that can only be achieved if the State Government is willing to listen.”

To achieve greater reach for her cause, Nicole recruited the help of Member for Hill Shane Knuth.

MAF helping those in need through aviation LAST Wednesday was a special day for Mission Aviation Fellowship’s (MAF) Mareeba Support Base as it marked the send-off of their sixth and final ‘Caravan’ aircraft to Papua New Guinea.

The project began at the beginning of the year when MAF bought six Cessna 208 Caravan aircraft from the United States of America before bringing them to Mareeba to have the necessary modifications made to each plane.

Horror year on Far North roads

The motorbike of Stewart Pinder who tragically lost his life in an accident in Mutchilba last week.

THERE were yet another two fatal motor vehicle accidents on the Tablelands over the past fortnight, further adding to what has been a terrible year on our roads.

William “Billy” Harris, 18, was the passenger in a Hyundai i30 when it rolled whilst overtaking a truck at Millstream on Friday, October 11.

His loss had a ripple-effect throughout the Tablelands community, as Billy was a wellknown and popular young man whose passing saw an outpouring of tributes from friends and family on social media.

That tragedy was compounded last week as the Tablelands saw another fatal motor vehicle

accident within days, as 54-yearold man Stewart Pinder was pronounced deceased at the scene after being in an accident whilst riding his Harley along Middle Creek Road, Mutchilba.

The Forensic Crash Unit (FCU) are continuing their investigation to determine the cause of the accident.

Tablelands Patrol Group Inspector Russell Rhodes responded to the fatal accident in Mutchilba.

“It’s extremely sad and unfortunate, and as the Tablelands Patrol Group we have to put a priority on road safety,” Inspector Rhodes said.

“We’ll try and be as fair and

reasonable as possible to our drivers, but we will do everything to ensure road safety and less fatal accidents.”

Inspector Rhodes is also a Harley enthusiast and knew Mr Pinder personally, and he noted the impact he had on his community.

“I’ve been a long-term Harley rider and I met this gentleman on a number of occasions,” he said.

“He was an integral member of the Veterans Motorcycle Club and he will be sorely missed.”

The two most recent deaths increases this year’s road fatalities in Far North Queensland to 23, compared to 18 at the same time last year.

THE Queensland Cancer Council branch was the beneficiary of a $9000 cheque courtesy of the Lionesses Club of Mareeba.

The money will go a long way in helping provide muchneeded funding for services provided to those people battling cancer.

“We’re accepting this cheque on behalf of the Lionesses Club of Mareeba, who hosted their

Hodge pledges Pensioner Concession increase Potential TRC candidate Peter Hodge recently announced that if he stands and were to be elected as mayor at the next Local Government elections, that he will be recommending to the new Council that pensioner concession be increased by 12.5 per cent in the 2020/21 budget and further concessions be indexed to rate increases going forward.

“The council pensioner rate concession has not been increased for some years while the net general rates have been increased by almost 25 per cent over the last four years,” he said.

“I understand that our pensioners are doing it very tough at the moment and it is only right that we look after the people who have worked tirelessly over many years and have made this region what it is today.”

“It will apply to the 2400 properties across the Tableland region and I am quite sure all pensioners, whether you are from Atherton, Millaa Millaa, Ravenshoe, Malanda or elsewhere on the Tablelands will look forward to this increase in the pensioner concession.”

Mr Hodge said it is not a large increase in monetary terms or its effect on the budget, as it will go from $240 to $270 per year.

FNQ Football celebrates 2019 season in style FNQ Football held its annual awards night on Saturday at the Pullman International Hotel in Cairns.

While there were no surprises, the sheer volume of awards was staggering. The two Tableland clubs (Mareeba and Atherton) collected a swag of awards on the night to cap off a successful season.

On top of their premiership and grand final trophies, the Mareeba Bulls Liam Leporati collected the Golden Boot award for highest goal scorer with 21 goals and his brother Josh Leporati was awarded best goalkeeper for the premier youth.

Overall 2019 was a successfull and memorable year for football in Far North Queensland.

Schools come together for memorial shield St Stephen’s Catholic College and Mareeba State High School came together last Tuesday at Borzi Park for the annual Dr Mark Bestmann Memorial Shield.

The annual battle for the Dr Mark Bestmann Memorial Shield ended in a split day of results last Tuesday.

Mareeba State High School and St Stephen’s Catholic College met each other on the Borzi Park grounds and prepared for a tough and intense battle.

Both schools fielded a men’s and women’s side for the first time in four years with both games being played side by side.

The matches were close with the St Stephen’s boys taking home the shield after keeping MSHS 10 runs short.

This is the first time in four years that St Stephen’s has been able to secure the trophy, but

unfortunately couldn’t follow through in the girl’s game.

The St Stephen’s girls lost when MSHS passed their total and won the game by 10 runs.

The Dr Mark Bestmann shield is day of sports and fun, however the underlying message is much more important.

The Dr Mark Bestmann Memorial Shield promotes healthy and positive wellbeing and helps to erase negative stigma surrounding mental illness.

Along with community members and Margie Bestmann, Dr Bestmann’s brother and sister attended the event all the way from Toowoomba and were ecstatic about the day and its message.

They were also on hand to present the trophies to the respective winning teams.

Event Co-ordinator Paul McLennan believes that getting kids out on the field and focusing on playing a sport helps gives students relief from the stress and issues that may be bothering them.

“For the three hours they’re out on the field it gives them a chance to forget about all that,” he said.

“They can go out and have fun with their friends.

“It’s taken a lot to get us here but there is still a lot of the community that is unaware.”

Margie Bestmann has wit-

nessed the growth and affect this day has had on the community and is looking forward to further progress.

“I think it’s fantastic, with the support we’ve been given we’ve been able to grow this event,” she said. “When it started it was just a small idea that came on the back of Mark’s death.

“Now they’ve got a long-term plan and today just represents how far they’ve come.”

With the consistent expansion of the interschool competition, Mr McLennan is hoping to approach businesses and suggest a corporate day dedicated to mental health awareness through sport for the entire community.

The first ever ladies match as part of the Dr Mark Bestmann Memorial Shield was won by Mareeba State High School.

Local racer looking to new heights 15-year old Mareeba local, Liam Waters also known as “Midge” is one of only a handful of young Australians to be invited to the Idemitsu Asia Talent Cup (IATC) tryouts in Sepang, Malaysia on October 29.

The IATC is a feeder program into the world MotoGP championship and aims to identify and assist talented, young and aspiring road racers into the upper echelons of the sport.

Liam has been competing on a Moto3 Honda NSF250 across Australia as part of the NSF250 Challenge Cup during 2019.

Placing consistently on the podium amongst some of the best up and coming road racing riders in Australia has earned him an invite to this event.
