QUEENSLANDERS can now get more in-depth updates on COVID-19 with the launch of a new data website. The website, launched last week, will breakdown regional data by Local Government Areas, giving local towns more oversight of their local cases.

“This website will be the single source of truth for all Queensland COVID-19 data drawn from across the state,” Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said.

The page will be updated daily, seven days a week and will include information about the total Queensland cases, total samples tested, new COVID-19 cases recorded over the last 24 hours, active cases, recovered cases, age and gender of confirmed cases, cases by Local Government Area and source of infection, COVID-10 mapping and cumulative graphs and selfquarantine statistics.

The website comes after local MP Shane Knuth wrote an open letter to the Minister for Health and Ambulance Services Steven Miles asking for more information and transparency from CHHHS and Queensland Health, specifically the breakdown of COVID-19 in Local Government Areas.

The data can be found at www.health.qld.gov.au/coviddata and also via the COVID19 website at www.covid19.qld. gov.au

Elective surgery restrictions eased

AUSTRALIANS waiting for some elective surgeries will now be able to access treatments after Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced the lifting of certain restrictions on hospitals, dentists and selective elective surgery.

The Prime Minister said National Cabinet agreed to a “gradual restart” of elective surgery after Anzac Day. This included IVF and joint replacement surgery for children under the age of 18. Other procedures to have restrictions lifted include eye procedures, endoscopy and colonoscopies, postcancer procedures such as breast reconstruction and some dental work including fitting dentures and braces.

Priority will be given to the neediest patients first, based on surgical advice of the medical facility where elective surgery is scheduled. This will be reviewed again in May.

COVID-19 fever clinics now open at hospitals

COVID-19 fever clinics have been opened at both the Mareeba and Atherton Hospitals to help combat the pandemic.

THE Mareeba and Atherton hospitals have received new tools to help fight the COVID-19 pandemic in the form of fever clinics operating out of both hospitals.

The recently established clinics are now open and are to help keep people who may be contagious away from other ar-

eas of the hospitals.

COVID-19 management plans have been rolled out across 17 rural and remote facilities with Mareeba and Atherton now joining that list.

Director of Nursing and Midwifery/Service Director, Rural and Remote Services Tracy Morgan, said that “rural

hospitals are well prepared for COVID-19.”

“We have established a high level operations centre to manage and co-ordinate our resources through this unfolding health emergency,” she said.

“Rural and remote patients who test positive for COVID-19 will be cared for either in their

homes or transferred to hospital based on their condition.

“Our staff are being supported with personal protective equipment and training, as well as regular check-ups to manage their health and wellbeing.”

With these clinics now being opened on the Tablelands, residents can have more piece of mind during this pandemic knowing that there are appropriate systems in place.

Ross Clarksmith, Director of Nursing and Midwifery and Facility Manager at Mareeba Hospital said that the fever clinics are “an important part of the COVID-19 response.”

“The fever clinics at the Mareeba and Atherton Hospitals allow us to test people for COVID-19 and help keep potentially contagious people away from other areas of the hospital,” he said.

“Fever clinics are an important part of the COVID-19 response and are also at Cairns North, Cairns Hospital, Edmonton, Innisfail Hospital and Yarrabah Hospital.”

The Mareeba Hospital Fever Clinic operates from Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 4pm and no appointments are necessary.

The Atherton clinic is only open through referrals via the Emergency Department.

COVID-19 update QUEENSLAND Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and Health Minister Steven Miles announced that due to encouraging signs of flattening the curve, some restrictions will be eased in Queensland from this weekend.

The State Government has given the green light for some recreational activities and extending the distance you can travel from home.

From this Saturday, May 2, you can now go for a drive (within 50km of home), ride a motorbike, jetski or boat for recreation, have a picnic, visit a national park and go shop-

ping for non-essential items.

But three conditions apply to these. Social distancing and hygiene must be maintained, you must stay within 50km of home and outings are limited to members of the same household or an individual and one friend.

All other rules including gatherings and limits on visitors remain in place during this time.

The Premier said numbers of new infections would be watched closely and the measures reviewed after two weeks.

“The first sign of a spike we will not hesitate to clamp

back,” the Premier said at the announcement on Sunday, April 26.

“This is a test-run to see what effect easing restrictions has on the containment of COVID-19, “I encourage all Queenslanders to back this first step so that we can keep the virus away and help everyone start to get their lives back.”

Chief Health Officer Dr Jeannette Young supported the new measures.

“Before you couldn’t leave home unless it was for essential reasons like getting groceries or exercising or going

to work and you had to stay in your suburb where possible,” Dr Young said.

As of The Express print deadline on Monday, April 27, there were 3 new confirmed cases of COVID-19, which takes the total confirmed cases to 1033 with 99,527 tests conducted.

Cairns and the Hinterland currently have five active cases and 29 recovered cases.

Six Queenslanders have died from COVID-19 and 926 patients have recovered.

New TRC ready for challenge ahead NEW COUNCIL: Mayor Rod Marti and Councillors Annette Haydon, Dave Bilney, Kevin Cardew (Deputy Mayor), David Clifton, Peter Hodge and Bernie Wilce.

THE new Tablelands Regional Council is ready to lead after being sworn into office last week.

The new Mayor and Councillors made their declaration of office and held their statutory post-election meeting on Monday, April 20.

New Mayor Rod Marti said he is pleased with the mix of new and experienced Councillors.

‘The team of Kevin Cardew, Annette Haydon, Dave Bilney, David Clifton, Peter Hodge and

Bernie Wilce met at our postelection meeting to discuss our first items of business,” Mayor Marti said.

‘I’m also pleased to announce Councillor Kevin Cardew as the Deputy Mayor.”

Councillor Kevin Cardew, who defeated incumbent Kate Eden for Division 1, said he is pleased to be able to put his experience within the public service to good use.

“I’m looking forward to the challenge,” said Cr Cardew after

being elected Deputy Mayor.

“I’ve had 35 years of local government experience as an employee. I hope with my experience I can work with the mayor. My experience is there to be called on and set platforms for the rest of the council to work from.

“We have to listen to the people, the residents that I spoke to before the election said they wanted change.

“I think it is now time to start afresh and get the whole of the

council to work as a team.”

Councillor Cardew said that council had several priorities to look at immediately.

“We need to look at the economics of how the council spends its money, we need to spend our money locally, we need to shop and buy local.

“We need to get back to basics, pull back and not do things that we can’t afford, and not do things that aren’t important. We need to get the basics right first.”

At the meeting, it was also

announced that Councillor Bernie Wilce would chair the Local Disaster Management Group.

Mayor Rod Marti said Council intends to be sober, fair, equitable, and reformist.

“It will look at ways to reduce costs across the board when considering the upcoming budget,” he said.

“Rates and charges, for many, have become out of reach and this is now exacerbated by COVID-19.

“There is much work to do and difficult decisions will need to be made.

“We have taken up our positions during unprecedented times and we want to do the best for our community.

“At our first ordinary meeting, we’ll be discussing and adopting a series of COVID-19 relief measures for the community and local businesses, targeting our support to areas of the community where it will do the most good.

“The proposed measures include the waiving or deferral of some fees and charges and relaxation of due dates.

“Today’s and future meetings will be live-streamed, and the recording made available afterwards. Live streaming and recording make meetings accessible to members of the community who are unable to attend in person but are still interested in proceedings and outcomes.”

TRC meetings will be held on the fourth Thursday of the month at the Community Education and Disaster Coordination Centre in Atherton.

Multicultural Festival postponned THE Mareeba Multicultural Festival scheduled for August this year has been postponed.

Mareeba Shire Council informed the festival committee via email after the decision was made at last week’s MSC meeting.

Effectively the Festival has been cancelled this year due to COVID-19. However, the motion by Council was that the

event would be postponed until 2021 in order to keep the funding.

The good news is the Queensland Government will allow the committee to carry the funding over to next year, and still give the committee a further $20,000 in 2022, to carry out the three-year commitment.

With this in mind the Mareeba Chamber of Commerce is launching a new ‘Stay Local, Shop Local, Support Local’ campaign next week to help businesses and the community survive the coronavirus pandemic.

Joe Moro, president of the Mareeba Chamber of Commerce, said we all know there is no place like home and that Mareeba is one of kind when it comes to supporting locals in a time of need.

“If ever there was an important time to shop and support everything local, it is now,” said Joe Moro.

“They (the businesses) are here now and we need them to be here in the future, it’s quite simple.

“Mareeba is an amazing community who always comes together in a time of crisis and when you keep it local, it means everyone grows.

“We have a wide range of businesses with so much to offer and lots are still open; we want them to keep trading and they need the support of the community to do this.”

Using a range of different materials, including local videos, the Chamber will be utilising traditional media like print and radio, social media, online and via businesses direct to promote the local message.

Unknown soldier named JB EFFLEY was the Tablelands first casualty in the Second World War, but up until recently no one knew who JB Effley was.

That was until Mareeba historic researcher Elwyn Troughton discovered his true name.

Elwyn has been researching the history of locals killed in the two World Wars most of her life.

The name JB Effley is inscribed on the Mareeba Cenotaph and the name had her stumped for more than eight years.

Then about eight weeks ago all the stars aligned, thanks to the internet.

Elwyn discovered that his name was spelt incorrectly, JB Effley was really JP Feely, who was born in Sydney on June 28, 1905.

Elwyn said once she had the correct name all the pieces started to fit.

“Once I had his name correct I could get his records from the Australian War Memorial and I discovered that he had moved up here and worked as a farmer in Biboohra and on April 2, 1940 he enlisted in Cairns into the AIF,” said Elwyn after the discovery.

“I then discovered that Private Joseph Patrick Feely was killed in a London bombing raid on November 10, 1940 – It was

less than a year after the war had been declared and just over six months after he enlisted.

“He was in London waiting to be deployed to the European front line.”

His death was the first recorded death of a Tablelands soldier during the Second World War. Elwyn is now on a quest to get his name changed on the Mareeba Cenotaph.

“I spoke to Angela Toppin and Mary Graham from the council a few weeks go about getting his name changed, but that was during the caretaker period so they couldn’t do anything at the time,” Elwyn said.

After officially being sworn in as Mayor of the Mareeba Shire, Angela Toppin said, “We look forward to receiving the research and information from Elwyn and will consider the request in consultation with the RSL Sub-Branch,” said Mayor Toppin.

“We have made changes to the cenotaph based on Elwyn's research in the past.

“Elwyn is so dedicated to preserving wartime history and we acknowledge and appreciate her efforts.”

Avocados get smashed during COVID

Tablelands farmer Jim Kochi who is the North Queensland Director and Avocados Australia Chairman says now is the perfect time to be eating smashed avocados on toast.

In 2017 Melbourne property developer Tim Gurner told 60 minutes that if millennials wanted to buy a house they should stop eating out at hipster cafes, “When I was trying to buy my first home, I wasn’t buying smashed avocado on toast for $19 and four coffees at $4 each,” he said.

Jim Kochi is the North Queensland Director and Avocados Australia Chairman and he thinks now is the perfect time to be eating smashed avocados on toast.

“If you want to save for a deposit on a house, you can now eat avocados on toast at home for a fraction of the price of a café and at the same time help out a Tablelands farmer,” he said As soon as the government announced the closure of restaurants and cafes, Mr Kochi said the industry felt the effects immediately.

“Locals can help the smaller local farmers, just keep supporting your local farms and add an avo to your shopping list. You can have an avocado lunch at home for the fraction of the price of what people used to pay at cafes.”

“We will not be issuing food licence renewals and extend the current licences until Council can adequately consider the impacts of COVID-19,” she said.

“The full impacts the pandemic is having on our hospitality industry won’t be known for several months; however we are taking a proactive approach to do what we can to reduce the financial impact during this stressful period.

“We are actively looking at ways we can help residents and local business through these challenging times,” Cr Toppin said.

Food licences due to expire on June 30, 2020 will be extended until 30 September. All new applications for food licences will be required to pay the fees adopted at Councils ordinary meeting March 18, 2020.

New parents in a time of COVID-19

BECOMING a new parent is scary enough, let alone in the midst of a global pandemic.

As the uncertainty continued and with new rules and regulations in place, Tolga couple Amy and Hayden Matthews welcomed their first child into the world.

Healthy baby Tate was born on April 15, at Cairns Private Hospital and while he won’t remember the strange world he was born into, it’s something his parents will never forget.

Prior to Tate’s birth, Amy, 27, and Hayden, 26, had been advised to self-isolate before going to the hospital by their doctor and while in hospital for five days, husband Hayden was screened and tested every time he left the room.

“Even when he was just going to get something from the car he was screened,” said Amy.

“They were asking him the same questions and doing the same checks, even though he had been in the hospital for two days.”

While in hospital, Amy and Hayden have had to experience the challenges and joy of becomming first time parents all on their own. No family were allowed to visit including Hayden and Amy’s parents, Tate’s grandparents.

“We were up on the second floor with a window, so that was the best they (the grandparents) had at that time,” Hayden said.

Amy was bedridden after a difficult delivery and new father Hayden only had the support of the hospital midwifes, as family were not allowed to visit or assist.

Being a new parent, looking after your bedridden wife and

newborn son with no outside help from experienced family members was a tough challenge for Hayden.

“It was really hard on Hayden trying to do everything he could,” said Amy. “It’s been really tough for me as well, being so family orientated and coming from a strong family background, it was tough for me not to let them see Tate.

“We are doing better now that family can visit at home, but we are still following the advice of the doctors – no outside contact with Tate and they must stay a certain distance away.”

At a time when we are being told to stay home and stay away from people, new babies can be source of connection and hope for parents – the hidden blessing of having a baby during COVID-19.

Blairdon was able to fully deliver his son with the help of his mother and paramedics who then took them to the hospital.

Although taken by surprise and now thrust into fatherhood, Blairdon couldn’t be more happy or proud.

“Right now I feel very proud

and happy with my life,” he said.

“I feel like I have accomplished one of the best things in this world; becoming a father.”

Amber was told that this type of pregnancy isn’t common and is called a Cryptic Pregnancy, where the baby sits further back towards the spine so a bump isn’t as visible and the symptoms are difficult to pick up on.

The mother can experience Fluctuating hormones that can lead to slight bleeding that resembles a period, while missing a period is one of the first signs of a pregnancy.

The new family are now at home and both mum and baby are doing well considering the shock surprise.

SURPRISE: Mareeba couple Amber Smith and Blairdon Nicol have been thrust into parenthood after Amber unexpectedly gave birth to baby Cooper.

A MAREEBA woman was given the mother of all shocks last fortnight when she unexpectedly gave birth to a baby boy in the shower.

Amber Smith, 18, and her partner Blairdon Nicol, 20, were at home late on Tuesday, April 14, with no idea that their lives were about to be changed in a flash.

Amber had just returned home from work when she began to have a migraine and gastro like symptoms.

At about 12.40am, she decid-

ed to go for a shower to feel better and only about half an hour later baby Cooper was born on April 15, much to her surprise.

Amber had been showing no symptoms of pregnancy and was taken completely by surprise while in the shower.

“I was a bit confused for a minute after I felt a rush of water, but when I realised, I screamed at the top of my lungs,” Amber said.

“Blairdon came running downstairs and saw me and called his mother and triple zero.

“It was a very short labour, it only lasted 10 minutes and then Cooper was born.”

Dad Blairdon was also caught by surprise after Amber screamed.

“I’ve never heard her scream like that before,” he said.

“The first thing that came to my mind was that she slipped over and broke a bone.

“I came downstairs to the shower and saw she was going into labour.

“I called my mother and she rushed over to help then I di-

Builder finds niche in crisis WHEN Tablelands builder Cameron Haigh found his work was drying up building sheds, he decided to make the most of the spare materials he had at home to build a couple of garden beds.

The innovative idea has taken off and Cameron hasen looked back.

Camerons wife Jo estimates that her husband has built more than 70 garden beds in the last month alone.

“The first garden beds he built were posted on-line and were snapped up really quickly and then the orders came flooding in for more,” she said.

“He has been flat chat since we sold the first beds online.”

Around three weeks ago Jo and Cameron decided to take the next step in their hobby and “Cam's Garden Beds and Backyard Things” was launched as an official business.

“The garden beds are made from the same materials that he used to make sheds from,” Jo said.

Cameron also started building small roadside stalls for local farmers.

“We made our own roadside stall for people to take some of the free passionfruit that we had laying about,” said Jo. “We put the call out on Facebook to see if any of our neighbours wanted to contrib-

ute and some people added chokos, lemons, limes, bananas, eggplants and custard apples.

“From that, we have sold a couple of the fruit stalls as well.”

Jo is currently on maternity leave and said the garden bed business has saved them during the current crisis.

“We have three small chil-

dren and with me being on maternity leave our income is significantly reduced,” Jo said.

“Then Cameron wasn’t getting any work building sheds, so this new business has been very handy for us to have this extra income coming in at this time.”

Jo hopes that Cam's Garden Beds and Backyard Things is going to be a long term pro-

ject.

“Cameron has a few other ideas of things that he can build and make, so we hope this really takes off.”

Mareeba lookout gets new look THE Mareeba lookout has undergone an upgrade courtesy of the Mareeba Lions Club and Mareeba Shire Council with the installation of a shade shelter.

The Bunny Seary lookout located on Chewko Road is a popular spot for residents and tourists alike, this lookout can often be an uncomfortable place due to the only concrete picnic table being exposed to the sun.

The Mareeba Lions Club underwent the upgrade process with money they received from the Gambling Community Benefit Fund which amounted too $7266.

The Gambling Community Benefit fund allocates funding to not-for-profit community groups to help them provide services, leisure activities and opportunities for Queensland communities.

Tablelanders unite THE President of the Tablelands Chamber of Commerce has been pleasantly surprised at the engagement she has received from the local community since launching the Tablelands Unite website and Facebook pages just over a month ago.

“We currently have 4838 members, with a further 1013 members that are awaiting their approval,” Bree Hargreaves said.

“We have four admins reviewing posts and filtering out information that is not from a credible source or anything that does not keep in with our positive community spirit.

“We have had great feedback from all businesses that have posted information of what they have on offer, and we want to remind local businesses that they are welcome to post any updates on their business into the group – it's free.”

Bree started the Tablelands Unite website as a way of collecting details of people in need and connecting them with people who can help.

Mick Borzi steps down from the Mareeba Heritage Centre

MICK Borzi, who was one of the original four people to establish the Mareeba Heritage Centre and Visitor Information Centre (MHC), has stepped down as the Chair of the organisation effective April 9, 2020.

Mr Bozi told the Express, “I had different views on a couple of subjects that I considered were important, the board voted for them and I felt that I should not continue as a board member,” he said.

“I resigned there and then”, its believed that Mr Borzi’s resignation was accepted immediately.

“I intended to stay on as the chair until the 25th anniversary which is in October, but I couldn’t agree with two matters of significant importance that the board agreed to.

“So after nearly 60 years of public service I have decided to retire.”

Mr Borzi wouldn’t be drawn on the matters that brought his resignation to a head only say-

ing “They should be treated as confidential.”

In a written statement the MHC have expressed their “deep regret” at the decision made by Mr Mick Borzi.

“Mr Borzi played an invaluable role on our Committee,” said Janet Greenwood, Manager of the Centre.

“Committee members thank Mr Borzi for his contribution and are appreciative that during this time he oversaw a period of change and continued expansion.

“His deep interest in the Mareeba community benefited our team and our Centre. While I am sorry he can no longer serve on the committee, I am thankful that he gave us his time during this period.”

Mick Borzi opened the Centre as Chairman on October 14, 1995. Current Committee Member, Tito Srhoj, will assume the role of Acting Chair until the next Annual General Meeting.

Covid-19 Relief Measures At the 30 April Ordinary Council meeting a series of Covid-19 relief measures for the community and local businesses will be tabled for adoption, targeting support to areas of the community where it will do the most good.

AS people around the world continue to cancel their travel plans, one of the hardest-hit industries since the beginning of the COVID-19 crisis has been travel agents.

But Ida Portella of Ida Portella Business and Travel Services is looking at the positives.

Now with extra time on her hands, Ida has taken on Gina Wilson, a student from St Stephen’s Catholic College as a trainee.

Gina is studying a schoolbased traineeship in travel and tourism and works with Ida’s business one day a week as well as studying at Tafe.

Ida said it’s a good sign for the industry moving forward.

“The Traineeship program in travel and tourism is great, it promotes the industry to young people and it’s a sign that we will be travelling again in the future,” Ida said.

“It's important that we bring the new generation through the industry.”

Gina also did year 10 work experience with Ida showing she has a real interest in the travel industry.

“Due to the current situation that we are in, Gina gets to see the positives and the negatives of the business side,” “The good thing is the government is helping to subsidise Gina’s payment so it’s a win-win situation.”

Primary school students adapt to home-school PRIMARY schools across Australia have had to adapt their teaching to suit the current COVID-19 pandemic and the governments push for kids to be home-schooled.

Just like their older counterpart; high schools, the primary schools across the country have been forced to adapt their teaching to suit a new homeschooling life for students.

Schools like Mareeba State School have had a massive decrease in the number of students attending school, as only children of essential workers and at risk parents or guardians are pushed to be at school.

Mareeba State School Acting Principal Hannah Simpson has stated that they have “roughly 25 percent attendance.”

“The students who do come to school are receiving the ex-

act same learning as the ones under the home-schooling modules,” she said.

“The students are using the same timetables and resources as their peers at home.

“To keep in line with keeping everyone safe and healthy the preferred method is to be home-schooling but we are open to students of at risk parents or guardians or essential workers.”

Drivers warned school zones are back despite coronavirus QUEENSLAND drivers are urged to slow down with school zones in effect despite the vast majority of students learning from home.

RACQ spokesperson Lauren Ritchie said although many students were not on school premises, they were still open for children of frontline workers and staff.

“With less traffic on the roads it could be easy to forget a new term has officially started and so too speed restrictions around schools,” Ms Ritchie said.

“We still have children going to school, so it’s crucial motorists are alert, prepared for anything and always abide by the 40 km/h speed limit between 7-9am nd 2-4pm on weekdays.”

Ms Ritchie also reminded parents still taking their children to school, to park in safe locations to avoid causing a crash risk.

“Even though the roads are quieter, it’s still critical you take care at pick up and drop off times, and only stop where it is safe to do so,” she said.

“Children entering or exiting a vehicle should always use the ‘safety door’, which is the door closest to the kerbside.

This will ensure children don’t step onto the roadside and into the path of a car.”

Lock up or lose it NQ OFFROAD

RACQ has warned Queenslanders to treat their car keys like cash as the State recorded a 15 percent increase in car theft in the last year.

15,010 car thefts were reported in 2018-19, an increase of approximately 2000.

RACQ spokesperson Lucinda Ross said even though Queenslanders were spending less time in their cars and more time at home right now, they shouldn’t get complacent.

“It’s unfortunately really common for car thieves to steal vehicles from drive-

ways, garages or while parked on the street,” Ms Ross said.

“While we’re all using our cars less right now, it can make them an easy target for thieves as they sit idly in the street.”

Ms Ross said the concerning increase in car theft really highlighted how Queenslanders need to take extra precautions to keep their vehicle safe.

“It’s really concerning how commonplace vehicle theft has become and it’s really important that you treat your car keys like cash,” she said.

Ingredients ▶ 3 cups all-purpose flour, sifted ▶ 1/4 teaspoon salt ▶ 225 grams unsalted butter, room temperature ▶ 1 cup caster sugar ▶ 1 egg ▶ 2 teaspoons vanilla extract ▶ small bowl of sprinkles of your choice

4. Roll dough into 1-inch balls.

7. Bake at 140 degrees C in the preheated oven for 15 minutes.

Do not over-bake.

8. Remove from the oven, and transfer to wire rack to cool completely and ENJOY!!

Cricketers showered with season awards

UNLIKE many of the other sporting seasons that were cancelled before they started due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the local cricket season was just heading into their finals when the season was scrapped.

So with the majority of the season still played in 2019/2020, the player’s accomplishments and milestones throughout the year still needed to be acknowledged.

In light of this, Cricket Far North decided to do their presentations online and still give players a chance to reap the rewards of their seasons.

Following Chris in the batting awards was destructive batter Paul Nasser who was awarded the First Grade batting award for most runs scored during the season, a huge 517 runs.

The bowlers weren’t left behind by the strong Atherton batting line-up with Michael Salerno taking out the First Grade Bowling Average award with an astounding 25 wickets at an average of 8.28 runs.

First Grade wicketkeeper Fred Pitterino also took out the First Grade keeping award with 9 catches and 7 stumpings.

Mareeba Cricket’s Second Grade wasn’t left out either with two of their players receiving awards from CFN. Second Grade Captain Brendan Payne was awarded the Second Grade Blue Competition Best and Fairest award, while Second Grade wicketkeeper Brendan Falvo was awarded the wicket keeping award with 14 catches.

The Mareeba Seconds side were also named as the winners of 20/20 competition.

In the ladies competition the Mareeba ladies shined as well.

Janelle Smithwick and Farrah Boustead were both awarded batting awards, while Trisha Spry picked up a bowling award. Farrah was also named ladies play of the year.

Special awards were also handed out to players with Mareeba’s Angus Campman being awarded the Jimmy Maher Cup player of the year.

With the threat of COVID-19 still looming, a date has not been set for the return of the cricketing season for 2020/21.

FORMER Atherton Cricket President Ian Beattie has been awarded his third lifetime membership to Cricket Far North (CFN).

Ian Beattie, otherwise known as ‘Spud’ has spent 35 years of his life in the administrative side of cricketing and has spent a total of 50 years in the game itself.

Already holding a lifetime membership to both Tableland Cricket and Cricket Far North Umpires, Ian has now added to this list after CFN awarded him a lifetime membership.

Spud started his cricketing career in 1969 and entered the administration side of things in 1986 where he became the secretary for the Atherton Warehouse Cricket Association until the next year when he became President until 1991.

He then became the VicePresident of the Tablelands Cricket Association in 1996 and became the President the following year in 1997 until 2000

where he then stepped down to become the secretary.

Ian then went on to register as an umpire coordinator for cricket in 2005 and continued this role until 2011. He then also became President in 2013 for the next year.

In 2015 Ian was voted in as Vice-President of the Atherton Cricket Association and the following year became President.

He continued in this role until he stepped down in 2019.

Ian was incredibly humbled by receiving the lifetime membership and saw it as a testament to his time in the game.

“It’s a tremendous honour to receive this award,” he said.

“This award makes me very proud and reminds me about my 35 years of involvement within admin in cricket.

“All of the outstanding memories I have and all the friendships I’ve made across the state will stick with me forever.”

Gladiators reunion cancelled THE Mareeba Gladiators 40 year reunion and celebration night scheduled for this July this year has been cancelled and is being reconsidered for 2021.

This decision came after discussions with the Mareeba Old Players and Supporters (MOPS) and the Gladiators committee about the best course of action for those who would be visiting from out of state or overseas for the reunion.

With a vast majority of the people invited to attend the reunion being in the most vulnerable age bracket for COVID-19, the decision was made to scrap the reunion and reschedule for

some time in 2021.

Mareeba Old Players Member Terry Roos is disappointed about the reunion’s postponement, but believes that it was the best decision.

“I’m sad and disappointed, but considering the situation there isn’t much that we can do,” he said.

“With the restrictions on air travel for both overseas and interstate flights the decision had to be made.

“When you consider everything that has been going on there was no sense in waiting any longer to make a decision.”
