Wason wins prestigious AMAQ Medal

MULUNGU Aboriginal Corporation Medical Centre Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Gail Wason has added to her stellar reputation after she took out the prestigious Australian Medical Association Queensland’s (AMAQ) Excellence in Health Care Medal.

Ms Wason, who has been the CEO at Mulungu for the better part of 11 years, has an extensive career in Aboriginal health and affairs that spans 25 years, of which also includes her role as Chairperson of the Queens-

land Aboriginal and Islander Health Council (QAIHC).

The AMAQ Excellence in Health Care Medal recognises an individual who has made a significant contribution to improving health care in Australia, and is only granted to one person each year.

Ms Wason said it’s humbling to have been awarded the medal.

“To be able to receive such a prestigious award really means a lot,” she said.

“I was certainly surprised to have won it; there are so many

great people who would’ve equally deserved it, so I am extremely grateful to have been recognised in this fashion.

“It’s particularly great to be acknowledged by the medical fraternity, as it is further reassurance that we have the right systems in place for those who utilise our services.”

Ms Wason said she loves her career, as it provides her with the opportunity to help and facilitate change within the Aboriginal community.

“The average person may not

see it, but the impact we’re able to have at Mulungu and QAICH on Aboriginal people’s lives is incredibly important,” she said.

“So it’s my aim to continue to work hard along with my team to ensure Aboriginal people throughout Australia are afforded greater health outcomes and more opportunity so they can live fruitful and fulfilling lives.

“That is why my job is so rewarding.”

Ms Wason took time to thank those who have made a signifi-

cant contribution throughout her career working in the sector.

“First and foremost I want to thank my team, you don’t receive an award like this without the support from an exceptional team, and I’m fortunate to have that,” she said.

“I also want to recognise the pioneering and innovative work done by previous QAICH Chief Executive Officers and board members; they have laid a wonderful platform which has allowed me to succeed in my role as Chair.”

THE latest Bendigo Community Grants program is now open.

Late last year year six community groups in the Mareeba area and two in the Dimbulah area received grants as part of the Mareeba and Dimbulah Community Grants Program for 2018.

The local bank is now pleased to be holding another Grant Round for 2019 with applications now open.

Gilbert Teitzel, Chairman of Mareeba and Dimbluah Financial Services, the company which operates the Mareeba and Dimbulah Community Bank Branches, said the grants would be used to carry out improvements and projects which would benefit the entire Mareeba and Dimbulah communities.

“2018 grants ranged from $5,000 to $60,000” Gilbert said.

Wind farm powering ahead

THE region’s largest renewable energy project is officially up and running after Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk was on the Tablelands to open the Mount Emerald Wind Farm last Thursday.

The wind farm, which began construction in February of 2017, is located five kilometres west of Walkamin and comprises of 53 turbines which is forecast to generate an average of between 500 and 600 million KWh (kilowatt hour) of safe, clean, renewable electricity every year for its 25-year operating life.

There are two models of wind turbines used at the site, with 37 3.45 megawatt capacity turbines and 16 3.3 megawatt capacity turbines, of which will provide electricity to more than 80,000 homes.

The construction phase of the $380 million project provided more than 200 jobs, with ten full-time jobs remaining since the farm became operational.

The Mount Emerald Wind Farm’s developers, owners and operators RATCH-Australia were ecstatic to have the project’s construction phase completed on schedule.

“It’s a mix of excitement and relief to be honest, obviously the construction phase is a stressful time with the amount of people, heavy machinery and equipment on site, so it’s a great feeling to have it finished, and most importantly, safely finished,”

The Mount Emerald Wind Farm was officially opened by Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk on Thursday.

RATCH-Australia Executive General Manager for Business Development Anthony Yeates said.

“We are very pleased to have it completed on time as it is not an easy feat, and as you can see here today we are extremely happy with the finished outcome.”

eration out of the facility was in August of last year.

“Since August 2018 we have been in a phased ramp-up of generation and commissioning, with the site becoming fully operational in January of this year,” he said.

While construction of the development began in 2017, the idea has been in the pipeline for

more than a decade.

“We formed a partnership with John Morris (FNQ developer) in 2009, however it has been a lengthy process as projects of this scale take a long time from concept to feasibility, to planning, to approval, to construction and finally to completion,” Mr Yeates said.

their parent Thai company, the State Government, Powerlink and Ergon Energy for their enormous contribution in getting this project off the ground.

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has been outspoken in her support of renewable energy, and she noted the enormous benefits a renewable energy project of this scale

is going to provide the state.

“The investment and vision for this wind farm is amazing – and is an integral part of the renewable energy boom is currently happening in Queensland,” she said.

“Queensland has more than 2,400 MW of large-scale renewable energy capacity operating already and almost 900 MW of renewable energy capacity is currently financially committed or under construction, and is part of the State Government’s policy certainty of setting a 50 per cent energy target by 2030.

“We know we need to get the balance right, but we also know that we are the most energy rich state in the nation and we have to put in place a policy which gives investors and bankers certainty.”

Ms Palaszczuk said the wind farm will be of great economic benefit to both the region and the state as a whole.

“I know Queensland has come to renewable energy a little late, but the boom is happening now and our state will reap the benefits as a result,” she said.

“Therefore it is my honour to officially open the Mount Emerald Wind Farm.

“Congratulations to everyone involved.”

The Mount Emerald Wind Farm also held a public open day on Saturday, with more than 600 attending.

Fundraisers to aid locals recovery THE Mareeba community was in shock after two local men were horrifically injured in a crane rollover in Mareeba Dimbulah Rd a fortnight ago.

Kevin Dolan, 53, and Liam Edwards, 37, have been making a steady recovery in the Cairns and Townsville Hospi-

tal since the accident.

Given the extent of their injuries, a lengthy and extensive rehabilitation process lies ahead, and the Mareeba Workers Club Association Inc. are doing all they can to help ease the financial burden that is likely to be heaped on Kevin, Liam

and their families.

In a statement made on the Mareeba Workers Club Association Inc. Facebook page, a spokesperson noted the club’s intention to host two fundraisers for Kevin and Liam.

“As most of you might already know, a couple of our

brothers were involved in a terrible crane “Franna” accident,” the spokesperson said.

“Kevin and Liam are both recovering in hospital and we are all praying for a full recovery.

“This journey will take both lads quite some time and effort

and both families will need assistance, be it financial or donations; or even just support.”

“The club and associated members will do as much as we can by having at least two fundraisers, so please get involved and show these boys how much we’re all caring for

them and their loved ones.

“We want to see both men back at the club telling their stories.”

Public meeting held in opposition of library relocation

Mareeba’s Warren Burton, the man behind the famous Jake and Lucy Scarecrow Family on the Kennedy Highway, has opened up on his family’s past medical history and how it has shaped his life.

A PUBLIC meeting was held at Mareeba State High School on Monday to gauge the community’s feelings about the relocation of the Mareeba library.

The Mareeba Shire Council announced earlier this year that they will be relocating the library from its current home on Byrnes Street to Anzac Avenue by the end of 2020 as part of the proposed Cedric Davies Community Hub. It wasn’t a great turnout however, as only approximately 20 members of the commu-

nity attended the meeting.

It has proven to be a blow for those in opposition of the relocation, who wanted to use the public meeting as a chance to garner votes which could then be passed onto the Minister in an attempt to put a stop to moving the library.

Despite certain members of the community voicing their concerns and displeasure with the library relocation, the Mareeba Shire Council maintains the position that this development will be of great benefit to the community long-term.

VIETNAM VETERANS

The inspirational story behind Jake and Lucy MAREEBA resident Warren Burton has been putting smiles on the faces of passers-by with his scarecrows and witty signs out the front of his property for the better part of 15 years, and now he’s looking to make an even greater impact with an extremely personal story that is sure to hit home with many people.

Given his laid-back and carefree personality, not many people would know that Warren has been battling a life-threatening genetic heart condition his entire life.

A number of Warren’s family members have tragically passed away early in life as a result of the genetic disorder, of which include multiple uncles along with his brother just five years ago.

Warren has suffered four heart attacks since his first bypass at aged 29, yet he refuses to let his health issues determine his life.

While Warren has traditionally been tight-lipped about he and his family’s problematic medical history in the past, he decided he wanted to speak up if it meant he could help others in a similar situation.

“I normally don’t talk about this sort of stuff, but I wanted to make sure that if there’s something I could do to help someone else, I’d do it,” he said.

“My message to people who may be going through something similar to me is to not sit around and mope about it – we can’t change it and need to get on with

our lives and enjoy all the wonderful things we have.”

Warren has more get-up-ango than most people who aren’t suffering from a heart condition, as he spends his time operating a plant and mango stall on his property roughly ten kilometres outside of Mareeba.

“I love picking mangoes and running my plant stall as it keeps me active,” he said.

“I can’t keep still, and it helps me not think about the trouble I have with my heart, so I just love having the chance to be outside as much as possible.

“However that sometimes means I get in trouble with the cardiologist as I tend to work a little too hard at times,” he laughed.

That love for the land stems from a life growing up on a dairy farm in Malanda.

“After living on a dairy farm all my life, I owned my own dairy farm when I was 26 and did that until I was 30,” he said.

“I then went into beef and did that until I came here (Mareeba) 15 years ago.

“I had to do that because of my heart condition – I really miss my cattle and horses.”

That’s not the only sacrifice Warren had to make, as his choice to not have kids was one made for very unselfish reasons.

“Because it’s a genetic disorder, I wouldn’t be able to put a kid through this no matter how much I wanted children,” he said.

“I’m thankful though, I have

45 nieces and nephews who are beautiful kids and I’m so grateful to have them in my life – that’s enough to keep us going.”

Warren unfortunately hasn’t had much luck when it comes to his health, as in addition to the problems he has experienced with his heart, doctors found an aggressive tumour in his bowel six years ago.

After two operations in Townsville and multiple rounds of radiation, Warren was able to beat the deadly disease.

“That was definitely a kick in the guts,” he said.

“To already have all the problems I have with my heart and then to be diagnosed with cancer was pretty tough, but again I made sure to get out on the property to help take my mind off it.

“I was in extreme pain but I was able to push through it and I was able to do that because I made sure I got off my backside and stayed active.”

Warren is known within his family to be somewhat of a prankster, and that’s something he amusingly takes great pride in.

“I love getting people with a good prank; it doesn’t matter if I’ve known you for a day or all my life, everyone is a target,” he laughed.

“Some people take life too seriously, which is something I definitely don’t.

“I could be gone tomorrow so I want to make sure I enjoy myself and have a good time.”

While Warren hasn’t been

too outspoken about his family’s medical history in the past, his involvement in the promotion of the region’s Cardiac Challenge event has been invaluable.

The Cairns to Cooktown bike ride raises much-needed funding for the improvement of health care services in Far North Queensland, and Warren encouraged community members to get involved.

“It’s a great initiative and goes a long way in helping a lot of people,” he said.

For those interested in donating or catching a glimpse of the riders participating in the event, the 2019 Cardiac Challenge will take place from September 2123.

The region is filled with so many inspirational individuals who have a story to tell, and Warren’s one of resolve and positivity in the face of adversity is one which will surely help many people both young and old.

SEVENTY-FOUR years since fighting ceased in the Pacific, this year’s Victory in the Pacific commemorative ceremony again attracted people from all over Australia on Sunday to remember and recognise Tablelands men and women who served in World War II. Celebrated every year, the day commemorates Japan’s acceptance of the Allied demand for unconditional surrender on August 15, 1945. For Australians, it meant that the Second World War was finally over.

Veterans and community members assembled at the Rocky Creek Memorial to honour those who made the ultimate sacrifice to ensure Australia’s future prosperity, all while acknowledging the enormous role the Tablelands specifically played throughout World War II. “During the war the Tablelands area was the largest military base in Australia, and Rocky Creek was the site of a 3000-bed hospital that treated over 60,000 patients — the

largest military hospital in the Southern Hemisphere,” Tablelands Regional Council Mayor Joe Paronella said.

Rocky Creek War Memorial Advisory Committee member Councillor Owen Byrnes said nearly 40,000 Australians were killed during the war, and 100,000 wounded.

“This year we gathered to honour those people and recognise the anniversary,” he said.

“We unveiled 10 individual plaques and two unit plaques — for the 2/2nd Australian Independent Company and 2/7th Field Regiment 9th Division 2nd Australian Imperial Force.”

Veteran Stan Mellick along with representatives from the Atherton army cadets and HMAS Cairns were the guest speakers on the day.

After the ceremony had concluded, attendees congregated to the Rocky Creek Igloo for some entertainment and to listen to WWII stories courtesy of the veterans present on the day.

Garden Party for a cause THE Mareeba Lioness club invites you to a day full of fun and entertainment this Saturday for the annual Pink Ribbon Garden Party.

Hosted at the Mareeba Turf Club, the garden party is an annual event with all proceeds going towards breast cancer research.

Featuring an afternoon tea, fashion parade plus local singers and entertainment, the day is set to be a local spectacle.

With a $10,000 donation goal, the Mareeba Lioness Club is hoping to see upwards of 150 people through the gates on Saturday.

to come along for a great day.

“It’s a beautiful afternoon and is such a great atmosphere,” she said.

“It’s all for a good cause, so come on out for a day of fun.”

Preparations for the party are “coming along quite smoothly” according to Mrs Dyer.

Combating homelessness

MEMBERS of Mareeba Community Housing got together last week during Homelessness Awareness Week in an attempt to educate local residents about the reasons for homelessness.

Throughout the Tablelands homelessness is a rising issue that needs to be addressed and the ladies at Mareeba Community Housing are doing just that.

By educating people on the reasons for homelessness they believe that people will be more understanding and willing to help.

Manager of Mareeba Community Housing Patricia Goldfinch described some of the leading reasons surrounding homelessness.

“Within the Tablelands community our main problem is overcrowding,” she said.

“It’s not uncommon that you will have a two bedroom household where you will have 12-13 people living in it.

“The lack of affordable housing is what drives a lot of the homelessness.”

Mrs Goldfinch stressed the issue of affordable rent, services and job wages.

“One of the other issues is income,” she said.

“The idea that people choose to be homeless and on the dole is completely incorrect.

“There may be less than two per cent of people who would choose to be homeless, but I’ve rarely come across anyone who has said they want to be home-

less.”

The event was made to not only raise awareness for homelessness, but to also educate in hopes of residents of the tablelands being more patient and understanding.

“Members of the community need to acknowledge and show respect to those affected and treat them with some dignity,” she said. “You’re seeing a person but you don’t understand the underlying issues.

“A few kind words or a recommendation of services like community housing, that’s what community is about.”

Mrs Goldfinch thanked Sibi Girgenti for allowing them to use the available space to promote Homelessness Awareness Week.

Groups merge for Atherton Hospital

The Atherton Hospital Auxillary handed over a $90,558.09 cheque to the newly formed Atherton Friends of the Hospital Foundation last week.

A SPECIAL occasion was held this week as the Atherton Hospital Auxiliary handed over its final cheque to the newly formed Atherton Friends of the Hospital Foundation.

The auxiliary members have merged with the newly formed Friends group, with the mutual aim of locals supporting locals.

Atherton Friends president Di Williams hosted a lunch to pay special tribute to the Auxiliary members, who have raised more than $650,000 since 1992, mainly through its weekly Bingo.

“We’re delighted to receive the final cheque from the Auxiliary group for $90,558.09. The funds they raise through bingo at the Atherton International Club and the hospital trolley, will now go directly into the

Friends account where it will join with other fundraising donations to make an even bigger difference,” Ms Williams said.

“We’d like to pay a special tribute to these Auxiliary members who give up their time week in, week out, to help others.”

Far North Queensland Hospital Foundation chairman Dr Ken Chapman and Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service chairman Clive Skarott AM were pleased to attend the lunch and give thanks to the hard working Auxiliary and now Friends members.

All funds raised by the Auxiliary and now the Friends group, stay in the local community to provide equipment to improve patient outcomes in Atherton.

BETTER HEALTH: Indigenous comedian, television presenter and actor Ernie Dingo was in the region last week to promote the importance of men’s health as part of the Bush TV’s Camping on Country program.

Working towards bettering men’s health ONE of Australia’s most prominent public figures of the modern era was in Mareeba last week as television presenter, comedian, actor and teacher Ernie Dingo visited the region as part of the Bush TV’s Camping on Country program.

The focus of Camping on Country is culture and health, and it sees the team behind the program visit a remote community each month to run camps which provide a space for local leaders to discuss what health issues they face in their community, what programs are working or not working and to work with the men and articulate their ideas for a targeted health program.

As part of Ernie Dingo’s visit, he and the Camping on Country team visited Mulungu Health Services Clinic, where he spoke on the importance of ensuring men’s health and wellbeing in

the nation’s Indigenous communities.

“As you know there are a lot of men who are our storytellers, our libraries, our song men, and our keepers of knowledge,” Mr Dingo said.

“And unfortunately we don’t see a lot of them engaged in community activities, and that is mainly due to the fact that Aboriginal men are stubborn.

“Too often we like to push our problems to the background, so this camp is about strengthening their mind, body and overall health so they can become engaged with other men along with their families.

“We want to see Aboriginal men engaged as fathers and grandfathers so they can play those key roles within the community.”

Mr Dingo also alluded to the camp acting as a tool for men to

receive reassurance that there are a number of other men experiencing similar situations.

“We have medical checks when we’re out there, we engage in a variety of activities, and we provide the men the chance to speak freely and openly about their health,” he said.

Mulungu Health Services took time to thank those who contributed to what was an extremely successful event.

“We would like to thank the staff who helped set up to make this occasion so great – thank you for all of your hard work,” a spokesperson said. “We hope you enjoyed the visit from the Bush TV’s Camping on Country team headed by the awesome and ever-smiling Ernie Dingo.”

RUGBY union’s small presence on the Tablelands hasn’t stopped two local boys from competing in the Rugby Union Peninsula side recently.

The U12 Peninsula side went down to Townsville with two Atherton boys lining the ranks.

Troy Taylor and Rok Centofanti were picked in the Peninsula side and played some tough games across the weekend.

Sophie Taylor, Troy’s Mother was proud of her son’s selection

and subsequent performance over the weekend.

“I’m very proud of him (Troy),” she said.

“Both of the boys played really well.

“They had some real nail biting games.”

Troy was named player of the match for their last game of the tournament and is looking to continue his rugby union career when he tries out for the U15 squad.

HerberTONNE launch a success

ADVENTURE Racing North Queensland and Dirty Northern Trial Running partnered up to deliver one the region’s biggest adventure races in early August.

Hosted on August 3 and 4, The HerberTONNE adventure race was a gruelling 100km trek through Herberton Historical village and was the first one to be run in North Queensland.

The locally based and focused run saw the 110 competitors exploring the wealth of amazing and diverse trails surrounding the town and exploring its heritage and history.

Race participant and organiser Rob Miller was satisfied with the turnout.

“We were aiming for 150 but to get 110 in the inaugural year was still impressive,” he said.

“Despite the weather we had a really good race.

“We had competitors coming as far as Sydney.”

Mr Miller had several expressions of interest for next year HerberTONNE race.

“People are keen to see it happen next year,” he said.

“This was our biggest event so far, our normal runs are only about 20km.”

Adventure Racing North Queensland has two races coming up in early and mid-October, with Bump to Bells happening on October 6 and The Turtle and the Lamb race on October 19.

Roosters remain in top five Gladiators ready for last home game

BOTH teams crossed the line for four tries but in the end it was Innisfail who took the points 2418 over the Atherton Roosters in Saturday night’s Cairns District Rugby League match played at the Mungalli Creek Dairy Stadium.

Innisfail were successful with all four conversions while the Roosters could only manage one two pointer. In their last home game of the season, the Roosters were first to score in the fifth minute when winger Pio Seci went over in the corner. Innisfail soon replied with two of their own and led 12-4 until the 33rd minute when the Roosters hit back with tries through Nigel Woodleigh and Ned Blackman to lock the score at 12 all for the break.

The Roosters’ second half

was full of mistakes as their attack broke down with poor ball handling early in the tackle count several times giving Innisfail more chances in attack.

The visitors looked comfortable when they pushed the score out to 24-12 with two tries against the tired Roosters defence. But to their credit the Roosters kick started a big finish when Jermaine Pedro sliced through with eight minutes left to play which closed the gap to 24-18.

The Roosters went close to saving the points in the final minutes but again the final pass was put down.

Bulls go down to Tigers THE Premier Men’s Mareeba Bulls outfit were on the receiving end of a heavy loss after being thumped 4-0 by Edge Hill at Tiger Park on Saturday night.

It’s a devastating loss for the Bulls, who were holding onto fourth spot on the ladder by just one point heading into Saturday night’s clash.

Their loss has ensured they have now fallen outside the top four as they sit on 19 competi-

tion points; trailing fourth spot by one point (Leichhardt).

While Edge Hill have been the benchmark all season, there was a quiet confidence amongst the Mareeba squad that they could come away with the upset win, however that level of confidence was diminished somewhat when they lost key 2019 acquisition Bronson Koppen after he was made unavailable due to a red card he received the

game prior.

Koppen has proven to be a stout defensive cog for the men in orange this season, and his prowess in thwarting attacking raids would’ve been crucial against the star-studded Edge Hill lineup.

While the loss is a significant blow for the Bulls in the context of their season, they’ll need to get back to their best as they take on Innisfail at Lindsay

Australia Stadium next Sunday night, August 25.

With the fight for a top four spot heating up, every game counts as the end of the regular season is within sight.

To add insult to injury on the night, the Premiers Women’s side went down 8-2.

It wasn’t all bad news however, as Mareeba’s Reserve Grade side were convincing 3-0 winners.

THE Mareeba Gladiators AGrade side went down in a tight affair to Southern Suburbs at Alley Park in Gordonvale on Saturday night.

After securing a come from behind win in a physical and emotional game against Ivanhoes the week prior, the Gladiators were looking to continue their winning ways and finish the 2019 season strong.

Mareeba got the better of Suburbs in a nail biter in their previous match-up earlier in the year, however too many lapses defensively cost the men in green and gold on this occasion as they found themselves trailing throughout the game, with Suburbs being the eventual 26-20 winners.

It wasn’t a great night overall for the Mareeba club, as Reserve Grade were convincingly beaten 37-16.

Reserve’s Grade loss could prove crucial in the context of their season as they look to secure a finals berth.

With just two rounds remaining in the regular season, Mareeba are currently sitting in eighth position on the ladder, with just two points separating them and

fifth position (Mossman and Port Douglas Sharks).

Given the amount of teams in the hunt for the last playoff spot, this weekend’s clash with the Tully Tigers should be a thrilling one as they too are within arms reach of the top five.

Securing a finals berth will be a huge achievement for the Mareeba Gladiators Reserve Grade side, who have had to battle injury and player unavailability all season.

The Mareeba Gladiators will host the Tully Tigers this weekend in what is their last home game of the season.

For those interested in attending, there will be live entertainment in the clubhouse after the game from esteemed local artist Shandell, providing players and fans alike with the opportunity to celebrate the 2019 season.

Schedule for this Saturday’s fixtures – Reserve Grade kick off at 4:30pm and A-Grade kick off at 6pm.

Get set to run for fun THE annual Mareeba Rotary Bendigo Bank Fun Run and Walk will grace Mareeba’s parks and tracks this Sunday, August 18 at the Bicentennial Lakes.

The event’s fourth year promises to be a big one and event organiser and race director Matt Jacob is hoping for a fun morning out within the community.

“Good weather, no school holidays, people don’t have an excuse not to come out and have fun,” he laughed.

“I’m expecting good numbers consistent with previous years.

“I’m feeling good about this year’s race.”

Participants will be able to walk or run in the 5km’s men’s, women’s and junior division with the 1km dash.

The fun runners will gather in the clearing behind the Mareeba pool before the main event begins, people can pay when they arrive.

All proceeds out of the hopeful $2000 raised will all go towards Mental Health research and local projects supporting Mental Health.

This event couldn’t happen without the support of local businesses, Bendigo Bank, or Mareeba Rotary who is the “Backbone” behind the event.

“This event wouldn’t happen

if it wasn’t for Rotary,” Mr Jacob said.

“They are the real workhorse behind the scenes. “It’s a great opportunity to get out, see your fellow community members and experience what beauty Mareeba has to offer.”

If that wasn’t enough to get people excited, “sweet prizes” will be offered courtesy of the local businesses.

For those interested, competitors will need to be at Bicentennial Lakes from 7.30am to register with the event kicking off at 8am sharp. Registration is $10 for adults, $5 for kids or family combo for $25 – Don’t forget your running shoes.

From kids to Adults, the fun run and walk this Sunday is for the whole family to enjoy.
