Racing returned to Mareeba on Saturday with a bang as the first race day of the spring racing season and the first in a year for the Mareeba Turf Club attracted racegoers from across the region. Wright wows at Gympie Muster

MAREEBA born and bred local Brendan Wright (pictured) has made his mark in country music with his performance at the Gympie Music Muster in August.

Brendan has recently returned from Gympie, where he performed in the “Academy Showcase” – CMAA Academy of Country Music. Brendan was one of ten participants chosen from Junior and Senior Academy applicants.

Brendan was full of praise for the event and the experience it gave him.

“I would like to thank Roger Corbett and the CMAA Academy of Country Music for giving me the amazing opportunity to perform in the Academy Showcase at the Gympie Muster,” he said.

“There were two individual performances over the weekend and a group performance with all ten participants at the Grand Final Event on Main Stage on Sunday.

“I was very privileged and honoured to be able to sing in this showcase and to meet and work with many talented artists, it was an awesome experience.”

Brendan also wanted to thank his support group. “I would also like to thank my teacher Mrs Sheppard and everyone who has encouraged and supported me.”

BY RHYS THOMAS LOCAL Mareeba cycling team ‘Are We There Yet’ are all ready to tackle the roads ahead as they get set to take part in the 2019 Cardiac Challenge.

The challenge sees participants saddle up and ride from Cairns to Cooktown in a gruelling endurance event covering more than 250km over three days from September 21-23.

All riders put their fundraising money and efforts towards the Far North Queensland Hos-

pital Foundation with all funds raised by the annual event devoted to improving health care services in Far North Queensland.

Mareeba based team ‘Are We There Yet’ have currently raised more than $6,500, with team captian Pam Lavers very pleased with their efforts and looking forward to the event.

“We have had this team going since 2014,” she said.

“My original motivation for doing the challenge was to do it with my husband.

“It also keeps us healthy and looking after our hearts.”

All members of the team have been affected by heart problems, whether themselves or a loved one.

“We’ve all had family members who have been affected,” Mrs McKeown said.

Mrs Pilat has asked motorists to take care on the range on the Saturday (September 21).

“We ask that cars take care on the range as some riders will be coming up the range on the day of the event,” Mrs Pilat said.

“Normally we would ride in a pack with vehicles at both ends but coming up the range will be single file.”

Mrs Lavers encourages people to come along and wish all the teams good luck.

The riders will pass through Mareeba and make a stop at Rotary Park on Saturday, September 21. The community is welcome to come along and show their support of the riders and the great event that helps improve health services for the region.

Sciacca duo named Farmer of the Year

BOOGAN’S Frank and Dianne Sciacca have added to their stellar reputation in the horticultural industry after they took home the prestigious 2019 Charlie Nastasi Horticulural Farmer of the Year Award.

The award was part of the Far North Queensland Growers dinner held at the Mareeba Football Club on Friday night, which aimed to recognise those within horticulture in the region who have exhibited exceptional innovation and leadership in the industry and within their respective communities.

The Sciacca family has been at the forefront of innovation in horticulture, as their eco-friendly red tip bananas have been crucial in the fight to save the reef for nearly two decades.

Their win on Friday night was not the first time Frank and Dianne have been acknowledged for their important work, as they were awarded the coveted Prince of Wales Environmental Leadership – Reef Sustainability (Reef Champion Award) in 2017.

Mrs Sciacca said it’s a privilege to once again be honoured with such a sought-after acco-

lade.

“It’s wonderful to be recognised in this fashion,” Mrs Sciacca said.

“I think the length of time we’ve been introducing innovation into our practices coupled with our overall work in production, marketing and growing has enabled us to come away with tonight’s award.”

Their decision in the early 2000s to move away from some of the imbalances created by conventional farming has made a significant impact on not only their business, but also the environment.

“The only consistent thing is change, and to be able to embrace change is critical,” Mrs Sciacca said.

“Farmers often tend to not like change; however there are a number of new generation growers in particular who are enthusiastic about implementing environmentally-friendly practices which is great to see.”

Mr Sciacca echoed his wife’s sentiments, alluding to the need for continued innovation in farming to ensure there is profitability in the industry without harming the environment.

Biboohra blaze wreaks havoc More than 60 firefighters battled with a fire just north of Biboohra last Thursday which caused significant damage to properties and crops in the area.

AS the Tablelands was gripped with multiple fires late last week, firefighting crews from across Far North Queensland worked

tirelessly to ensure the damage to properties in vulnerable areas was kept to a minimum.

One particular fire which

proved extremely difficult to contain was Thursday’s fire just north of Biboohra, with it requiring more than 60 firefight-

ers on hand to control the blaze which started just after 10am.

The time of the day and a strong south-easterly wind con-

tributed to what was described as a “fast moving fire”, and Incident Controller and Queensland Fire and Emergency Services Commander for the Western Command Shane Jarvis noted that the ignition of the blaze was accidental.

“As it relates to what exactly started the fire, we have some leads that we passed on to the QPS (Queensland Police Service), and at this stage it points to an accidental ignition,” Mr Jarvis said on Friday.

“With that in mind, we are urging residents to not light fires of any kind across the Tablelands and strongly advise them to reconsider any form of hot work they wish to undertake such as using grinders, welders and oxy-torches.

“We also urge residents to be mindful when using a tractor to slash their paddock, as something as small as striking a rock with the machine’s blades is capable of starting a fire.”

Mr Jarvis said while QFES’s predictive forecasting model pointed to the potential for increased fire activity on Thursday, he noted that the number of fires that broke out across the Tablelands was unexpected.

“We knew we were coming into a heightened period, however as the day progressed, every fire that occurred on the Tablelands all came at once which made it very difficult to stay on top of,” he said.

and Kuranda as low as 3 and 4 degrees (Celsius) at night, along with highs of 28-29 degrees throughout the day.

“And as we approach the summer months, we’ll be reaching temperatures around 35 degrees, which will bring lower humidity and therefore heighten our fire danger across the community.”

Incidences of this nature have an enormous ripple effect throughout the region, and Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Tom Gilmore is urging the community to remain vigilant in what is a trying time.

“Thursday was a very sad reminder of the catastrophic effects bushfires can have on life and property,” Cr Gilmore said.

"The fire at Biboohra devastatingly destroyed a family home, properties and livelihoods in the area.

“On behalf of the community, our thoughts are with the family and all those who were involved in the events that unfolded so rapidly Thursday afternoon.

“My sincere appreciation is extended to all the emergency service personnel and volunteers who faced difficult conditions and ultimately stopped the fire in its path of destruction.”

DEVASTATION: The Stewart family home was lost as a result of the fire just north of Biboohra last Thursday.

Stewarts stay positive in the face of adversity

THE damage to properties and crops in last Thursday’s fire north of Biboohra was extensive, and one such family who tragically lost their home as a result of the blaze were the Stewarts.

With the help of his son, nephew and two brothers, Allan Stewart did everything he could to save his home and more than 7,000 mango trees as the fire rapidly ripped through his 200 acre property.

“We were battling the fire for two or three hours just to save what we could on the property,” Mr Stewart said.

“However the combination

of the time of the day and the wind gusts was too much for us to handle, and as a result we unfortunately lost our family home where my wife and I raised four kids along with 3,000 mango trees.

“Thankfully we were able to save the trees out the back courtesy of firebreaks that we put in place.”

As he prepares to rebuild his operation, Mr Stewart said the cost to rejuvenate the crop will be significant.

“It’s hard to put a figure on exactly what the financial loss will be, however given the amount of trees we lost in the

fire, it could cost our yield up to $600,000,” he said.

Despite the lasting impact this natural event could have on the Stewart family both from a financial and emotional standpoint, their resolve in the face of adversity has been admirable.

“We’re definitely all still in a bit of shock, but we have to remain positive and support each other throughout this ordeal,” he said.

“Out of everyone it’s been my wife Dianne who has been hit really hard - she had a lot of personal belongings in the home which mean a lot to her so for them to be gone has been really

tough.”

“But I’m confident we’ll be able to rebuild and the boys will be able to run this operation for another 20 to 30 years.”

Mr Stewart said he would like to thank the community who have showed enormous support since the incident.

“The amount of letters I have received from people I don’t know and the number of people who have called in to pass on their condolences is what gets me,” he said.

“Their support has been fantastic and it goes to show what a wonderful community we have here.”

Banana growers call for rethink on impractical proposed Reef Regs

THE Australian Banana Growers’ Council (ABGC) is again calling on the Queensland Government to reconsider impractical aspects of the proposed reef regulations which could jeopardize the state’s banana industry and severely restrict economic development.

Of particular concern is that the regulations would classify new horticultural development – on property already owned by growers and on future farms – as new Agricultural Environmentally Relevant Activity.

These proposed, blanket ERA provisions require farmers to implement expensive and impractical measures that fail to take into account location, landscape or climatic conditions.

“While the ABGC and growers as a whole are committed to protecting the Great Barrier Reef, it is our firm belief that this part of the proposed legislation not only contributes nothing to those efforts but could have a devastating impact on our $600 million industry and regional development as a whole,” ABGC chair Stephen Lowe said.

The Government’s proposal is to restrict new horticultural development on land that has not had horticulture or other crops on it 3 years out of the last

10, with at least one of those in the last 5 years.

“This measure is simply restricting future horticultural development for no apparent gain.

We continue to try and communicate this, but it seems our concerns for future economic development in the state’s north aren’t being heard.”

“The ABGC has worked closely with the Government on new minimum nutrient and sediment standards for all existing freehold land,” Mr Lowe said.

“The minimum standards will complement existing Best Management Practice farming systems and are the best way to ensure no net decline in the quality of water going to the Great Barrier Reef – which is the goal all parties are working towards.

“Growers have already contributed countless hours and funds to improve water quality in the region they call home.

What we really need here is for the Government to get on board, support extension and help growers make change.”

Mr Lowe said the nature of the proposal, and the fact that an ERA would be applied retrospectively, suggested the Government did not understand the realities of farming, nor the potentially disastrous conse-

quences of endless delays to the approval process on a political whim.

“I sincerely hope the Queensland Government will reconsider its position before this bill has passed. The ABGC and the Government has a strong track record of working together. We all want to achieve the best possible outcome for the Great Barrier Reef.

“In this instance, we are simply urging the Government to allow us to do this in a practical way – a way that not only delivers results but doesn’t hinder the economic development of Far North Queensland.”

The ABGC’s key concerns of the proposed regulations: • That they would cause serious profitability and sustainability issues on grazing land within existing banana farms, and land that has been already purchased for horticultural development (bananas or otherwise) • That innovation and diversification within the banana industry would be stifled • That an industry that directly and indirectly supports 18,000 jobs in North Queensland and has a flow on value of $1.2b would be unnecessarily harmed.

Peter Hodge has outlined his plans for the Ravenshoe Depot if elected as Mayor at next year’s council elections.

Hodge’s plan to upgrade Ravenshoe Depot Atherton’s Peter Hodge recently announced that he will be running for Mayor in next year’s Tablelands Regional Council election, and he has already began outlining his plans if his bid for the position is successful.

“Today I announce that if I stand and were to be elected at the next council elections, I will recommend to the new council that the Ravenshoe Depot be upgraded to the standard that is required to cater for delivery of a full maintenance and service crew for our plant that will operate out of this depot,” he said.

LNP slams supermarkets skimming milk profits A PARLIAMENTARY motion passed today was an important signal to supermarkets and milk processors that dairy farmers should be paid more for their milk.

The LNP was proud to support and vote for the motion that called on supermarket giants to pay their farmers more for their milk.

LNP Shadow Minister for Agriculture Tony Perrett called out the major supermarkets of Coles, Woolworths and Aldi for deceiving customers and damaging the local dairy industry.

“It is simply unacceptable that supermarkets have failed to pass on to processors and farmers the extra 10c a litre they started collecting at the checkout,” Mr Perrett said.

“Clearly, supermarket giants are milking our dairy farmers by refusing to pass on the extra revenue.”

The motion called on the supermarkets to pass on the additional 10c a litre price increase imposed earlier this year, which is estimated to be delivering an extra $100 million profit straight to the supermarkets, while giv-

ing little to farmers.

“It’s time for these supermarket bosses to stop hiding behind their spin doctors and start paying our farmers properly for their milk,” Mr Perrett said.

“If we want to save our Queensland dairy industry, supermarkets must pass on the extra money.

“Customers have made their voice heard – they want Queensland milk and they want the supermarkets to start paying farmers what they deserve.”

“It has been taking months to have potholes repaired, and I believe residents are aware that we have not had a traditional monsoonal wet season this year.”

Mr Hodge said he intends to revert back to the three maintenance crews we had before amalgamation.

“There will be one crew at Ravenshoe, one crew at Malanda and one crew at the

Atherton industrial estate at Tolga.

“All crews will be provided with the resources that is necessary to bring back the road network to the required standard.”

Mr Hodge said the whole region relies on the road network, not only for farming outputs but all other economic activities including retail and tourism.

“The upgrade to the Ravenshoe Works Depot will be a significant effort in the revitalisation of the town of Ravenshoe, not only in economic terms but also social values as well,” he said.

Racegoers rejoice RACEGOERS from across the region returned to Mareeba Turf Club on Saturday for not only the first race day of the spring racing season, but the first in a year for the local club.

Wet weather meant race meets after last year’s annuals were all abandoned. The day saw more than 2000 people flock to the track and with sunshine on their side, they were treated to a wonderful day of quality country

racing, fabulous fashions and a whole lot of fun.

Trackside, it was I’m Not sure who came out on top in the Mareeba Cup, storming home out wide to upset race favourite Luv Ya Beak.

Race-day enthusiasts will have the opportunity to return to the Mareeba Turf Club for another day of racing, fashion and fun later in the year at the muchanticipated Boxing Day meet.

Mt Molloy students get creative

Students enjoyed a day of fun at the annual Under 8s Day with activities for all.

Under 8s fun captivates kids ST THOMAS’ students took a break from school work last Friday and enjoyed a day of fun with the annual Under 8s day held on the school oval.

Students were able to put down their pencils and interact with other kids outside of the classroom for a day filled with fun activities.

Thanks to the help of outside organisations like PCYC, Mulungu, Mareeba Hospi-

tal and the Mareeba Library, activities included arts and crafts, face painting, jumping castle, petting zoo and more.

St Thomas’ Assistant Principal Leonie McCormack was thrilled to see the students bonding and interacting with each other.

“It’s a chance for the students to put down their pencils and celebrate being a child,” she said.

“It gets the kids involved and interacting with peers they might not often interact with.

“It’s a great way to break down barriers and build relationships.”

Next year’s Under 8s day will be held during September and is open to outside community members interested in bringing their kids for a day of friends and fun.

Students at Mt Molloy State School have been working with community members and local artists to create unique mixed media sculptural installations which will beautify the school.

The project is funded by the Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) 2018-19 program and encourages students to learn new skills in collaborative planning, designing and producing a large-scale artwork, using a variety of art techniques. RADF is a partnership between the Queensland Government and Mareeba Shire Council to support local arts and culture in regional Queensland.

Chair of the RADF Advisory Committee, Councillor Angela Toppin said the project has strengthened connections between the school and the local community. “Council is pleased to support and promote arts and culture in regional areas,” she said.

“I commend the Mt Molloy State School community for putting forward such a wonderful project and look forward to seeing the final installations.”

Students have also interviewed residents and have been undertaking local history research to inspire one of the installations.

The installations are being created from clay, plaster, recycled metal and found objects will depict the school’s kitchen garden program, local history and local environment with a focus on the unique birdlife in Mt Molloy.

“The school is very grateful for the RADF grant that has provided this opportunity to learn and produce a permanent display of artwork that can be enjoyed by the school, local community and other visitors,” she said.

Queensland Arts Minister Leeanne Enoch said investing in

creative and cultural experiences through RADF strengthened regional communities, boosted cultural tourism, and enhanced the quality of life in rural and remote towns and cities.

“RADF is a unique partnership between the Queensland Government and Mareeba Shire Council to support local talent, unite communities and celebrate the arts across the state.

“The Queensland Government, through Arts Queensland, is contributing $2.08 million in 2018-19 in partnership with 58 councils statewide to help deliver cultural experiences which align with local priorities,” Ms Enoch said.

The sculptural installations will be completed by the end of the year.

Farmers learn from international soil and grazing specialists

A GROUNDSWELL of support for soil health and natural grazing practices recently brought almost 200 Far Northern farmers to workshops on the Tablelands.

Graziers, cane, banana, beef cattle, avocado and maize farmers hit the paddock and ‘classroom’ for sessions focused on maximising soil health through natural processes, grazing cattle more effectively and diversifying ground cover.

Tarzali grazier Rob Pagano said stock rotation and pasture management methods were changing.

“We’re already rotating stock but we’re learning here how to do it more strategically to take

full advantage of your grasses,’’ he said. “It’s easy to go too hard or to be too cautious and keep too much back - that can also work against you when it comes to pasture and soil health.”

Landholders heard from internationally recognised soil ecologist Dr Christine Jones and ecological grazing expert Dick Richardson. Terrain NRM’s Jen Mackenzie said the pair was brought to the Far North as part of Australian and Queensland Government-funded projects, delivered by Terrain, that were helping landholders to improve soil health, reduce erosion and prevent sediment from flowing to the Great Barrier Reef.

English trio say goodbye to the Gladiators THE Gladiators 2019 campaign is finished, and with that it signals the time to say goodbye to some of the players who donned the green and gold this year.

Three players who will be sorely missed are trio Eze Harper, Josh Adu-Dwanna and Joshua Ward, all three of whom hail from the north of England.

All three brought a particular skillset on the offensive side of the ball which caused havoc for CDRL defences throughout the year.

Ward’s passing game, ability to organise and overall rugby league nous meant he had the opposition retreating every time he had the ball.

Harper had a similar effect on opposing defences, as his athleticism and elite footwork often left would-be tacklers clutching at air.

Adu-Dwanna on the other hand had a more direct approach, choosing to use his significant mix of strength, speed and explosive power to consistently run over both tacklers and the advantage line.

While their play this year is to be applauded, their impact off the field was just as important, as their boisterous and welcoming personalities was crucial in the much-needed culture shift at

the club in 2019.

“There’s still more that needs to be done to improve the culture at the club, but there’s people there now who are working hard to ensure that it does,” Ward said.

“While it was an up and down season for the team both on and off the field, there’s definitely potential and hopefully the boys can build on it for next year.”

Despite certain performances this season which made it easy to see why he played semi-professionally in the UK, Ward said he wasn’t particularly happy with his play in 2019.

“There were some issues at the club in the middle of the season which didn’t help my performances, but I got back to enjoying my football in the last month or so,” he said.

“We won three out of our last four and I felt that was when I was playing my best rugby league.”

Adu-Dwanna’s season was exceptional, with a number of his performances deserving of man of the match honours.

“Our season was a bit a disappointment on the whole, I tried my best individually and had we come together a bit more as a team I feel we could’ve

done a lot better,” Adu-Dwanna said.

“As Wardy said (Joshua Ward), things are looking good for next season and I’m confident they’ll do well.

“I think Trent being ap-

pointed captain-coach meant the squad was more invested in playing and you saw that in our performances in that last month of the season.”

Harper echoed Adu-Dwanna’s sentiments, noting that they

had the side to compete for the CDRL title this year.

“I genuinely believe we had the talent to beat anyone,” Harper said.

“We definitely should’ve done better this season but with

the amount of young guys coming through the ranks the future looks bright.

“If they can continue to improve on the culture at the club they can go all the way and win a title.”

Roosters hitting their straps at the right time THE Atherton Roosters AGrade side secured their spot in the Cairns District Rugby League qualifying final after a 32-26 victory over the Yarrabah Seahawks at Barlow Park on Sunday afternoon.

The Roosters got off to a great start as they jumped out to an 18-0 lead courtesy of tries to James Coyle, Tyson Burchell and Anthony Curcio.

Their lead wasn’t safe however, as Yarrabah’s ability to score points in bunches at a rapid rate ensured they were dangerous from start to finish, and they were able to hit back with two quick tries to CDRL legend Steve Singleton and Steven Stafford.

The half-time break proved to be a welcome reprieve for the Atherton outfit as it halted Yarrabah’s momentum, and the Roosters made sure they took advantage by scoring two early tries in the second half to set up an almost unassailable lead for the Seahawks.

While Yarrabah did well to get back into the game, their 18 point deficits on two separate occasions proved too difficult to overcome and they eventually went down 32-26.

The Roosters’ win sets up a mouth-watering clash with defending premiers the MossmanPort Douglas Sharks, who were defeated 32-26 by the Innisfail Leprechauns.

Bulls beaten in convincing fashion

THE Mareeba Bulls have been dealt a significant blow heading into the upcoming finals series as they were beaten 5-2 by the Marlin Coast Rangers at Pennell Field on Sunday afternoon.

The loss means they stay in fourth spot on the ladder with 24 points with one round remaining in the regular season, with Stratford hot on their heels on 22.

It doesn’t get any easier this weekend for the Bulls, as they take on the third placed Leich-

hardt Football Club away from home on Saturday night.

It wasn’t all bad news for the Mareeba Football Club however, as Reserve Grade were dominant in their 6-0 win while the Youth outfit also won in a much closer affair 2-1.

For those interested in attending this weekend’s fixtures, the games will take place at Leichhardt FC Seniors field, with AGrade kicking off at 7pm.

Mossman will be a tough game for Atherton, as their speed and skill will surely provide plenty of match-up nightmares for Roosters coach Graham Clark Snr. Unfortunately for the club the A-Grade side were the only Roosters team to win on the weekend, as Reserve Grade lost another close one to Brothers (32-28), while U18s went down 46-24 to a very strong Brothers outfit.
