Atherton State High School student Nikolas Edsen was recently presented a STEM award

by Minister Grace and Queensland chief scientist Professor Paul Bertsch for his excellence in Astronomy and Astrophysics.

As an outstanding Senior STEM Student Award recipient,

Nikolas has received a generous $5,000 which can be used for STEM related purchases and activities.

Nikolas is honoured to receive this coveted award.

“I think it is great that students and teachers are rewarded for the effort and dedication they put into STEM,” he said.

“Receiving this award has shown me the benefits of putting effort into school work and it’s great that I finally get something out of it.

“It has helped me realise that I can achieve so much to make a difference in the world if I put my mind to it and the same goes for anyone else.”

Nikolas has always been

interested in STEM and is constantly working hard to push himself to his limits.

“I really enjoy STEM, because there is still so much to learn and discover,” he said.

“In grade 9, I started studying an advanced online course in Astronomy and Astrophysics through the Online College of Advanced STEM (OCAS).

“It showed me how much there is to learn about the universe.”

As the world is growing and expanding, new opportunities within the field of astrophysics are opened, and Nikolas is looking to grab these burgeoning opportunities with both hands.

“I still do not know exactly

what sort of jobs this will bring me in the future, but definitely something in the STEM field,” he said.

“There are so many different jobs out there and some that do not even exist yet.

“I believe that STEM is one of the fastest growing fields, so it will be great to be involved.”

Nikolas believes that STEM holds solutions that are burdening our modern society and believes that in order to survive and effectively thrive, STEM is a field that should be thoroughly and rigorously examined.

Nikolas’ interests aren’t just confined to the STEM field, as he also enjoys thoughtful discussion and learning the answers to

some of the most fundamental and important questions about the world.

Nikolas was full of praise for those who helped him receive this prestigious award.

“I would especially like to thank David Platz for giving me the opportunity to challenge myself,” he said.

“I do not think I would have gotten this award without his help. “I would also like to thank Atherton High School and my parents for supporting me to be the best I can.”

Nikolas recommends the STEM courses to any other high school students who are also interested in STEM and would like a challenge.

The video was produced to commemorate and celebrate the 50th anniversary of the 1967 referendum and the 25th

anniversary of the 1992 Mabo Decision.

The project has been led by a Reference Group including representatives from Mulungu Aboriginal Corporation, Mu-

luridji Tribal Aboriginal Corporation RNTBC and Mareeba Shire Council.

Council received a National Reconciliation Week grant in 2017 from the Department

of Prime Minister and Cabinet, Indigenous Affairs Group to deliver the project.

TABLELAND businesspeople converged on the Mareeba Bowls Club last Thursday to listen to members of the horticultural industry discuss the predicted growth the region can expect and what needs to be done to ensure the sustainability of that growth long-term.

IF you needed a sign of the value of the horticulture industry to Mareeba, last Thursday’s Mareeba Chamber of Commerce monthly meeting had the answer.

Five crops grown in the Mareeba Dimbulah Irrigation Area (MDIA) featured – mangoes, avocados, citrus, papaya and bananas – with industry leaders providing a snapshot on their worth, growth and challenges to around 80 guests.

It was, by far, one of the most well attended business meetings in recent times.

The citrus industry is cur-

rently worth $55.7 million, and is home to 124 growers.

About 2300 hectares of avocados are grown in the region, putting production at 4.2m trays and the farmgate value at $164m.

The Tablelands banana industry is worth $100m at the farmgate and $30 to 40 million in Lakeland.

The region’s mango industry accounts for half of Queensland’s production and is worth nearly $75m, while the Tablelands accounts for half of the region’s papaya production, across 400-450 acres and with

a $31.4m farmgate value.

With growth comes increasing pressure on existing water availability and the meeting revealed a real and urgent need for additional water sources.

Mareeba Chamber of Commerce president and Biboohra mango grower Joe Moro said the region’s horticultural industries were thriving, however, the lack of additional water posed a risk to continued growth.

“Horticulture is a high value crop and while we don’t necessarily make huge profit, at the end of the day we spend a lot of money in the community,” Mr Moro said.

“We believe there will be a water issue in the region, highlighted in the Dimbulah area where we expect to see significant growth across several industries, and this is one of the reasons for the proposed Nullinga Dam. “However, water from Nul-

banana industry leader and grower Paul Inderbitzin whose home region, Lakeland, north of Mareeba, faces similar uncertainty unless a proposed new dam on the Palmer River gets the green light.

“The Palmer River Dam would solve all our problems at Lakeland,” Mr Inderbitzin said.

“We have plenty of dirt, good red volcanic soil – which is as good as any on the Tablelands.

“But if you don’t have the water and soil combination you are left high and dry.”

Mr Moro said while the current modernisation of the existing MDIA scheme would produce an additional 8000 megalitres of water, the Johnstone River diversion was another option that needed serious consideration as part of a wholistic approach to answering the region’s future water needs.

Local midwife awarded for excellence in healthcare

EXCELLENCE: Mareeba Hospital’s Michelle Bombardieri was recognised for her contribution to the healthcare sector as she was awarded the Excellence in Managing Workplace Culture in the 2019 Annual Australian College of Midwives Awards.

MAREEBA local Michelle Bombardieri was recognised for her incredibly important work in the healthcare sector as she was awarded the Excellence in Managing Workplace Culture at the 2019 Annual Australian College of Midwives Awards.

Mrs Bombardieri has an extensive career in healthcare which spans decades, of which includes her current role as the Unit Manager of Maternity and Paediatrics at the Mareeba Hospital.

The leadership and mentorship Mrs Bombardieri has provided her staff in the role is apparent as they nominated her for the award.

A member of the Mareeba Hospital staff said Michelle’s focus is to advocate for the woman and her family.

“Michelle supports the midwives, enrolled nurses, Indigenous liaison officers, administration staff and the obstetric and anaesthetic teams to achieve their full potential by reminding

us in all forums that the woman and their family are always at the centre of our care,” they said.

Mrs Bombardieri said it is an honour to have received the award, particularly given that the nomination was courtesy of her staff.

“I am very proud to have won the award – and while it is a privilege to be recognised individually in this fashion, this award is due to the entire team’s effort,” she said.

“It’s not just the midwives I work with, every staff member at the Mareeba Hospital play an enormous role in ensuring that we put the community first and I think that’s why this hospital has such strong engagement and respect from the public.

“The staff here makes a concerted effort to be present within the community and it’s something that is pushed at the Mareeba Hospital, which is why I enjoy working here so much.”

Mrs Bombardieri said the

main thing she tries to implement in her role as Unit Manager of Maternity and Paediatrics is being an advocate for the woman and their family.

“First and foremost my focus is to ensure we work towards providing the mother and her child with a high standard of care,” she said.

“They are at the centre of our decision making, which makes my role a challenging yet extremely diverse and rewarding one.”

Mrs Bombardieri said she would like to thank her staff for nominating her for the Annual Australian College of Midwives Award, along with her fellow colleagues at the Mareeba Hospital and the entire community for their unwavering support.

Chamber unhappy with Cook office relocation

Federal Environment Minister Sussan Ley was in Cairns last week to shine a light on what the Federal Government is currently doing and their plans in place to preserve the Great Barrier Reef.

Minister Ley quells concerns over barrier reef regulations THE Federal Minister for Environment Sussan Ley was in Cairns last Tuesday where she discussed the LNP Government’s plan to help recuperate and preserve the Great Barrier Reef.

A pertinent aspect of that plan is to ensure that farm-based sediment runoff and naturally occurring pollutants are reduced; and while that is something Ms Ley noted the Liberal National Party are enthusiastically working toward, she was quick to remind the Queensland public that it is largely a State Government issue.

“It’s incredibly important, however these are matters for the Queensland Government and their own legislation,” she said.

“In saying that, we (Liberal National Party) want to work with farmers and farmers want to work with us.

“I’ve been a farmer myself and I know that they along with our Indigenous land managers care for this country and are on the front line in helping our environment.

“I visited farmers a couple of days ago who are progressive and who are doing different things when it comes to applying and retaining fertiliser on their land to reduce sediment which is great to see.”

Despite Ms Ley applauding farmers for their forward-thinking approach relating to helping manage the reef, there are a number of farmers who hold concerns about the stringent Reef Laws which they feel could significantly hurt the industry’s sustainability long-term.

Included in the Palaszczuk Government’s proposed waterquality legislation for the Great Barrier Reef are strict reporting

rules that will diligently monitor fertiliser sales and use in an attempt to stop nutrients and sediments from properties ending up in reef waters and impacting its coral.

This could prove an enormous hit in the hip pocket for farmers, with the cost of soil testing expected to increase from $120 to as much as $1000 as a result of the regulations.

This significant uptick in cost could impact farmers on the Tablelands and up to Lakeland, as they too will be required to adhere to the new laws.

“The reef regulations are a serious concern for the agricultural and horticultural industries,” FNQ Growers President Joe Moro said.

“Very stringent laws are on the horizon, and while there are some farmers already doing their bit to help the reef and adhering

to the regulations, there are aspects of the Reef Laws that need to be strongly challenged.”

Federal Member for Leichhardt Warren Entsch said despite complaints from some farmers, he noted that most are on the front foot in helping manage the Great Barrier Reef.

“It needs to be acknowledged that the farmers are leading the way in reducing sediment, and often at significant cost to themselves,” he said.

“Unfortunately those who criticise it (regulations) often overlook the contribution by our agricultural industry in making sure we have the world’s best practice.

“The challenges of the Great Barrier Reef are not just for Australia, they’re for the entire world.”

THE Mareeba Chamber of Commerce has recorded its disappointment with the relocation of the Cook Electorate office from Mareeba to Cairns.

The chamber has written to the incumbent Member for Cook Cynthia Lui and the Queensland Premier to record its disapproval with the office relocation which was finalised despite assurances made during the 2016 state election campaign that the permanent office presence would remain in Mareeba.

Mareeba Chamber of Commerce president Joe Moro said the chamber believed the backflip directly defied the wishes of the Mareeba community.

“Mareeba is the commercial centre of the Cook electorate, yet the Member for Cook, supported by the Queensland Premier, has chosen to remove the electorate office to a city not within the boundaries of the Cook electorate,” Mr Moro said.

“The chamber is actively promoting Mareeba as a retail, industrial, agricultural and service hub, and this adds another vacant shopfront to Mareeba’s central business district.”

Mr Moro said the relocation was an example of decentralising services to more-populated areas, to the detriment of rural and regional communities like Mareeba.

Supporting main roads on Kur-World decision

SICK and tired of hearing Kur-World whine about their treatment from Main Roads?

Kur-World have bought this upon themselves by submitting a grossly flawed study on the impacts that the project would have on the Range Road.

It was so inaccurate that even blind freddy could see straight through it. Main Roads are quite correct in the stance they have taken and I would hate to think that the Coordinator General would bow to Political pressure from the likes of Kate Jones – State Minister for Tourism.

Ms. Jones’ quest for Tourism at any cost would be of detriment to us, the travelling public, who would suffer the consequences for the next twenty years at least.

Libirary relocation is a disadvantage to the disadvantaged

I ACCEPT that more space is required to house the MSC Library Collection and to provide the level of service our community expects of its Shire Library but there is real disadvantage to the

already most disadvantaged people of our community, if the library is relocated to the Bowls Club building on Anzac Avenue.

Based on my observations the people who make most use of the library are aged persons on very limited incomes and primary school children so to suggest that they can commute to another site 3km from the existing library along Herberton Street is laughable.

I seriously doubt the mobility scooters used by many of the aged persons living in the township would have the range and power to negotiate the journey from where they live to Herberton Street, down the grade to the John Doyle bridge and then the climb up the grade to Anzac Avenue on the flat. I also doubt parents will permit their primary school age children to traverse the route alone.

I realise the Bowls Club acquisition is a great deal for both Council and the Bowls Club, but community infrastructure is not built on great deals and further to that I don’t understand why Council is bailing out the Bowls Club.

Accessibility must be a core requirement in assessing the suitability of any future Library site.

If anything the Bowls Club’s failure to make a suc-

cess of the site on Anzac Avenue should be a strong indicator to the patronage the Library will experience at the same site. The history of the merger of two successful bowls clubs located in the heart of town to build the white elephant in Anzac Avenue was a failure to realise the Club’s patrons were limited in their physical and financial capacity to travel to the new site. It is not as if suitable buildings don’t exist in Byrnes Street or there is a complete dearth of land that could be redeveloped in the CBD. The Library at Anzac Avenue will also be a site too far for many and it will be the most vulnerable of our community who will not travel to enjoy the facility.

Business confidence goes from Trad to worse

LABOR’S hopeless Treasurer Jackie Trad is driving Queensland businesses to the wall.

The latest survey from the Chamber of Commerce and Industry Queensland (CCIQ) has revealed that business confidence is now 4.2 points lower than a year ago.

An overwhelming majority of businesses now fear for the future, under the Palaszczuk Labor Government.

Without confidence in the future, Queensland businesses are being forced to put-off staff and cut shifts.

The first post-Budget survey also showed a staggering 80 per cent of all businesses are expecting the state’s dire economic conditions to stagnate or worsen.

It’s no wonder Queensland has the highest unemployment rate in mainland Australia. Annastacia Palaszczuk’s addiction to tax is smashing our economy with 10 new taxes that are ripping $3.5 billion from hard working Queenslanders.

New water trading platform a win for FNQ TRADING water in Far North Queensland is now easier and more transparent thanks to a new online portal.

The Waterexchange platform provides customers with immediate access to real-time information about available water allocations, transaction history and costs.

Sunwater is the first water provider in Queensland to use the tool and has placed its available allocations on the exchange.

Sunwater Chief Executive Officer Nicole Hollows has encouraged water customers to also consider undertaking their trading activities on the publicly available platform.

“With drought conditions still affecting much of the state, it is important water users have visibility of unsold water allocations, particularly seasonal trades,” she said.

“Increasing market transparency will lead to better utilisation of water throughout the state and we hope that moving our activities to the online platform will assist in achieving this goal.”

Far North Queensland customers can set up personalised portals on the platform, making it easy to buy or sell orders, bid on water auctions and keep track of trades.

Trading activities are confidential, however, data relating to pricing and volumes are publicly available.

“We have received a lot of feedback about the water trading process and believe this user-friendly tool is a great solution that will benefit all customers,” Ms Hollows said.

Work underway on Package 2 of BDR COMMENCEMENT of works on the Burke Development Road’s (BDR) Chillagoe to Almaden progressive sealing is now underway courtesy of the Mareeba Shire Council, Roadtek and the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR).

Calls for this project to take place have been in the pipeline for a number of years, often spearheaded by Mareeba Shire Council (MSC) Mayor Tom Gilmore and MSC Councillor Kevin Davies.

The project involves the widening and sealing of approximately 1.8 kilometres of unsealed road west of Alamaden, of which includes the upgrade of the culvert over Four Mile Creek.

The upgrade, which is anticipated to be completed by

the end of 2019, is funded by the Australian Government and TMR/State Government under the North Australia Beef Roads Program.

The foreseen benefits to come as a result of the project include improved productivity and travel times by sealing unsealed sections of road, reduced stress and damage to livestock, improved road safety, improved route reliability and reduced road closures due to wet weather, and reduced whole-of-life asset management costs.

Member for Cook Cynthia Lui said sealing the Burke Development Road is understandably a big focus of our community.

“It’s important for road safety and also improves the dust issues that many people have

raised with me,” she said.

“Thanks to our government’s partnership with the Federal Government, we managed to get funding under the Northern Australia Beef Roads Programme (NABRP) to grade two of the worst, most rutted sections on the road covering about 7km between Chillagoe and Almaden.

“Mareeba Shire Council did that work late last year, and I know the Mayor has been a big champion in calling on securing further funding to seal more sections of the road.

“I pushed for funding in our most recent State Budget and I’m pleased we’ve been able to lock in $7.4 million in jointfunding under the beef roads program to seal.”

“It’s been quite some time since we have paid some attention to upgrading the Burke Development Road, but I’m pleased that it’s once again a priority of the Federal and State Governments,” he said.

“I have made a concerted effort since being councillor to ensure this project goes ahead – there has been seven kilometres of works completed in my time as councillor and hopefully I’ll get to see it through.”

“We hope the federally funded Northern Beef Road funding will also be duplicated next year to see the final sections sealed along with major improvements on the Ootan Road.”

MAREEBA Workers Club Annual Bike Show is set to roll into Mareeba this weekend for its 19th annual event.

The show will feature bikes from all over Queensland and will feature up to 14 different categories for judging.

Judging will start at 3pm with the presentation at 4:30.

The classes up for nomination include People’s choice, Best Custom, Best Shovel, Best Evo, Best Twin Cam, Best Sportster, Best Vintage/Classic, Best British, Best Modified, Best Ladies, Best Paint, Best Jap, Best Junior and Furthest ridden on the day.

nual Bike Show coordinator Walter Cagnin said preparations for this year’s event have been great.

“We’re always on top of it and we’re just putting the finishing touches on now and we’re all looking forward to a great weekend,” he said.

“Hopefully the weather permits and attendees of all ages can enjoy the wonderful attractions this event has to offer.”

Mr Cagnin said while there may be a few differences in 2019 to the bike shows in years past, the core of it will be the same.

“It’s a fantastic family fun day that has entertainment,

amazing bikes both inside and outside of the show and hopefully it will be a success.”

Mr Cagnin said he would like to thank the sponsors for their support, particularly Mareeba Crane Hire who have been a feature sponsor since the bike show’s inception.

Live music will be provided to enjoy through the night plus overnight camping for those too eager on the bar.

Kids will also be entertained with a kid’s corner and face painting.

Racegoers ready and raring for Annuals

RACING RETURNS: Mareeba Turf Club will come alive with country racing on Saturday, September 7 for the Mareeba Annuals.

RACEGOERS will be immersing themselves in everything that is racing, fashion and fun as the barriers will fly open on the Mareeba Turf Club’s Annuals race day next month.

The Annuals will prove to be one the Mareeba Turf Club’s most important meets in quite some time, after their last four meetings dating back to Boxing Day 2018 were cancelled due to wet weather.

Mareeba Turf Club Vice President Nipper Brown said preparations for this year’s Annuals race day has been going smoothly.

“Everything is progressing well,” he said.

“This will be a fantastic event for all who attend, it’s traditionally our second biggest meeting of the year however this

one may be one of our bigger race days for a while considering how many we’ve recently had to cancel.

“I think you’ll find the Mareeba community is itching for a great day at the track and this event will provide something for everyone.

“There’s wonderful entertainment, quality racing and we are confident that there will be an electric atmosphere right throughout the day.”

In addition to the excitement that attendees will be witnessing on the track, Fashions on the Field will also be dazzling those at the event with an abundance of great prizes up for grabs across multiple categories.

There will be food and drinks available for purchase with a canteen and bar open to the pub-

lic.

For those interested in attending, the Annuals race day will take place on Saturday, September 7, with tickets costing for adults, while children under 16 are free of charge.

Be sure to get your backside trackside for what is shaping up to be one of biggest events on the Mareeba Turf Club calendar in 2019.

Students celebrate with morning tea

Mareeba State High School students enjoyed a morning tea last week with teachers, parents and carers.

MAREEBA State High School students and parents got to celebrate excellence in school after the recent morning tea held last Monday.

The morning tea is used as an opportunity to congratulate students on getting only A’s and B’s on their report cards.

Parents are welcome and en-

couraged to attend the event to help celebrate with their children.

Gifted and Talented Co-ordinator Mrs Stefanie Prizmic was incredibly proud of the students.

“Im very proud of the students, they’ve worked very hard,” she said. “The results speak for themselves.

The effect of marriage, divorce and separation on your will There seems to be a misunderstanding about divorce and the appropriate time to update your will or do a new will.

You should always have a current and up to date will in place. Waiting for your divorce to be finalised is never a good reason to delay your estate planning.

What’s the effect of divorce on a will?

In Queensland when a person makes a will (“the willmaker”) and then later divorces, any provision appointing the willmaker’s former spouse as executor, trustee and/or guardian will be revoked and taken to have been omitted from the will. Further, any gifts made in favour of the former spouse are automatically revoked upon divorce. All other provisions in a will not relating to the former spouse, generally will remain valid and effective. As divorce only revokes the provisions to your former spouse in your will and not your whole will, you do not need to wait for your divorce to be finalised to prepare a new will (and I do not recommend that you wait). Whist this example may seem reasonable to many of you, it is important to bear in mind that only upon a formal divorce will those provisions to a former spouse be revoked.

What happens if I am separated but not divorced?

For married couples, separation alone will not revoke a will. In Australia married couples must be separated for a minimum period of twelve (12) months before making an application for a divorce. During the period of separation (which is sometimes many years) if you have an old, outdated will in place gifting everything to your former spouse, he/she may get just that, everything.

What if I don’t have a will?

It is just as bad, if not worse, if you don’t have a will in place and you are recently separated but not divorced. If you do not have a will in place and are legally married at the time of your passing, then under the rules of intestacy your former spouse will get a large portion, if not all, of your estate.

When should I do a new will or update my existing will?

A lot of clients prefer to hold off preparing a new will or reviewing their existing will until their divorce and/ or property settlement has been finalised. I do not recommend this. Whilst you might feel like you have 101 things to do and your life is chaotic, a new or revised estate plan should be at the top of your “To Do” list.

What other life changing events will affect my will?

The ending of a de facto relationship or civil partnership will also revoke the provisions to a former spouse in a will. So even if you are not married, you should bear this in mind. Marriage will automatically revoke a will*, unless the will is made “in contemplation of marriage”. I often find, especially for younger clients, that they still wish to make provisions for their siblings or parents even if they are getting married. Usually if their parents have gifted them a sum of money or have provided a guarantee to assist them in buying their first home. If they prepare a will making these provisions for family members and then later get married, and their will has not been made in contemplation of marriage, then these special gifts to family members will be revoked. *It is important to note that marriage will not revoke the following provisions in a will pre-dating marriage: 1. a gift to the person to whom the willmaker is married to at the time of the willmaker’s death; 2. an appointment as executor, trustee, advisory trustee or guardian of the person to whom the willmaker is married at the time of the willmaker’s death; 3. a will, to the extent it exercises a power of appointment, if the property in relation to which the appointment is exercised would not pass to an executor under any other will of the willmaker or to an administrator of any estate of the willmaker if the power of appointment were not exercised.

MAREEBA’S local centre based care (CBC) facility, St Johns, specialises in caring and providing for elderly clients who need a break from their homes or are looking for new experiences.

With refurbished state of the art facilities, clients are constantly engaging whether it is cooking, singing, dancing or arts and crafts the mind is always working at St Johns Community Care Centre Client Service Planner Marita Roberts explained the Long Day Respite supporting carers with lengthened working days within the week.

“We originally only opened Monday and Wednesday, but now we are open on Tuesday and Thursdays as well,” she said.

“We’ve got professional staff, looking after dementia clients, disability clients and others with complex needs providing them with a safe and fun filled environment “If you’re feeling like you want to come and be a part of a group and make friends this a good opportunity.

The care centre focuses on availability, ease of life and equity to all of its clients, catering to individual needs in a profes-

sional and friendly manner.

Variety Show dazzles audience

MAREEBA State High Schools variety show dazzled audiences across its performances last Friday and Saturday nights.

The show, Razzle Dazzle, showcased talents from not only

students, but also teachers with a little something special from school principal Mr Scott Whybird A refurbished skit of Rapunzel featured teachers from not

only Mareeba State High school but also from Tully, culminating in an interesting and entertaining rendition of the loved classic.

From dancing, signing, bands, comedy skits and absurd skits,

the school variety show had something for everyone. Brains are now storming for next year’s musical which is set grace the High School hall August 2020.

Students get behind stamp collecting month

THE Mareeba Lioness club donated a cheque to the Nates Mates foundation last Thursday.

Nate has recently returned from Brisbane after his fourth brain surgery and is now recovering and awaiting results.

The Mareeba Lioness club used their recent cake sale fundraiser to donate $500 to Nate in support of his battle.

The cheque was directly given to Nate’s mother, Katie Moule, who said she is thankful for the donation.

“The overwhelming support the Mareeba community has shown is just amazing,” she said.

“I get blown away every time; I’m constantly getting

calls with people wanting to help and offering their support.

“It’s very heart-warming.”

Nate’s parents are “staying positive” ahead of the scans and are waiting for September when they’ll have more information.

Mareeba Lioness Club President Lyn Dyer was just happy to donate to a local boy in need.

“We donated to Nates Mates because he’s a little local boy that needs our help,” she said.

“I didn’t know at the time that he was a Mareeba local, all I knew was that he was very sick.

“As a club were happy to be able to help even in the smallest of ways.”

Toko’s return to rugby league

WHILE the Mareeba Gladiators were unsuccessful in securing a finals berth in 2019, there are already positive signs for next season after they recently acquired former Ivanhoes and

Northern Pride backrower Marvin Toko.

Toko is returning to rugby league after having some time away from the game, citing injury and a lack of passion as

the reasons behind his two year hiatus.

“I’m really looking forward to playing again next season – I want to get that love for the game back as I lost it there for a

bit,” he said.

“I found myself watching games of footy on TV and not getting the itch to play, but I’ve started to get keen to play again and when Trent (Barnard) mes-

saged me I made the decision to come back.”

While Toko is quite young himself, he has extensive experience at both the CDRL and semi-professional level, having

played in two grand finals with Ivanhoes (2015 and 2016) to go along with his two seasons spent in the Queensland Cup system (Northern Pride).

“I learnt a lot at Ivanhoes and in particular at the Northern Pride before getting injured, so hopefully I can bring some of that experience and pass it on to some of the young guys in the team,” he said.

Mareeba Gladiators captaincoach Trent Barnard said he can’t wait to get back out on the park with Toko.

“I was lucky enough to have won a grand final with him in 2016, and we’re really excited to have him as part of the club for 2020,” he said.

“He will provide a lot of guidance around the park for a lot of the young players, particularly our backrowers.

“He will teach them how to run the right lines and ensure they’re always on the ball.”

In addition to potential signings, Barnard said he’s confident the Gladiators will retain most of the 2019 squad.

“Everyone I’ve spoken to said they are keen on coming back for next season which is promising,” he said.

“Also, hopefully Marv’s signing will grab some attention and encourage other players to come up and play for Mareeba.

“So it’s looking pretty positive for next season at this stage.”

Barnard said preseason for the 2020 season will begin after New Years, with a specific date still to be determined.

Mareeba boxers on the warpath AFTER Mareeba Boxing Club’s stellar performance at the recent Babinda Tournament on August 10, the club has set its sights on the Townsville tournament.

Mareeba boxers Kyle Whitely and Austin Pell are currently training hard in preparation for the upcoming Townsville Tournament in three weeks.

Mr Pell’s convincing win

over his Cairns opponent has set him in good stead for the upcoming gauntlet.

“It was a great feeling to win, I felt alive,” he said.

“It was good leading up to the fight.

“I kept up my hard training, running every morning, sticking to my diet.”

Mr Pell is confident in the

upcoming bout in Townville.

“I’m feeling confident, I’ve just got to keep training hard,” he said.

“Just keep putting in that 110%.

“I’ll do what I do when I’m down there and get a feel for it.”

The fighters are supervised by three individual trainers; David Moloney, Ken Cotterill and

Ross Cardillo Coach Ross Cardillo, speaking on behalf of the other trainers, was proud of both the boxers and is confident at their upcoming performances.

“It was a good, well-paced fight,” he said.

“The cairns fighter thought he had the advantage with the height and weight difference.

“But in the first round Austin hit him quite hard and cleanly and rocked him.”

After the first round showing, Austin dominated the remaining two rounds and won convincingly by decision.

“Austin controlled the ring well and kept on top of the Cairns boxer,” Mr Cardillo said.

“He won by unanimous deci-

sion which we expected due to his performance.

“We were all very happy with Austin’s performance.”

The Townsville tournament will be a demonstration of some of the best amateur boxers in the state. Austin is set to fight on September 7 and will be supported by his coaches and fellow boxer Kyle Whitely.

The Mareeba Gladiators secured wins in both A-Grade and Reserve Grade at Davies Park on Saturday night as they hosted the Tully Tigers.

THE Mareeba Gladiators AGrade side were victorious on Saturday night after their opponents the Tully Tigers forfeited after just 20 minutes due to a lack of players.

The home team was up 22-0 when play was halted, as they were crossing the line with ease against what was a very fatigued Tigers outfit, of which was backing up from the Reserve Grade fixture.

In Reserve Grade, the Gladiators kept their finals hopes alive as they defeated Tully 34-26.

They will secure a finals berth if they can win this weekend against Edmonton away from home.

While Reserve Grade

coach Cam McPherson was somewhat disappointed with his side’s performance, he noted that he was pleased that his side were able to come away with a victory against a game Tully side.

“At the end of the day a win is a win,” he said.

“We didn’t play our best but I was still pleased that we found a way - this team has shown resolve and fight all year.

“We’ll be looking for a good preparation this week at training so we’re ready to go this weekend.

“It’s a really important game against Edmonton and all the players are excited for it.”

While the Gladiators will only squeeze into the finals series if they secure a win this weekend, McPherson certainly isn’t lacking confidence when it comes to his side’s chances.

“I genuinely believe we can beat anyone if we’re prepared and firing on all cylinders,” he said.

“But we can’t think ahead, we need to take care of business this weekend and hopefully we’ll be able to start preparing for the finals on Tuesday.”

For those interested in attending, the Gladiators will take on the Edmonton Storm on Saturday at Petersen Park.

Roosters winger Pio Seci takes on the Yarrabah defence.

Roosters finals ready TWO weeks out from the finals and the Atherton Roosters have made their call as contenders for this years crown following Sunday’s performance against the Yarrabah Seahawks at Yarrabah.

Although beaten 32-26 by Yarrabah, the Roosters put in a gutsy effort after making the trip to Yarrabah minus many of their regular stars who were ruled out with injuries.

With several players backing up after playing reserve grade, the Roosters’ performance was

commendable as they were in the contest through to the final bell.

The Roosters led 14-10 at the break and went ahead 20-10 soon after the restart. But from here, Yarrabah soon started to find gaps in the tiring Roosters defence and went onto rescue the match. But to their credit, the Roosters did finish full of running and scored the final match try when Nathan Curcio went over as the final siren sounded.

The Roosters are now cer-

tain to finish in fifth spot on the points table and will play a sudden death semi-final on Sunday September 1.

The final games in the Cairns District Rugby League 2019 premiership competition are to be played this weekend and the Atherton Roosters play in Tully on Saturday night.

In Sunday’s reserve grade match Yarrabah downed the Roosters 34-16 and also won the under 18 game 44-38 over the Roosters.
