‘Tis the season to be jolly Atherton was looking its festive best last Friday evening, with the annual ‘Christmas Carnival’ capturing the imagination of the town. Tablelands Regional Council Mayor Rosa Lee Long officially opened proceedings by turning on the Christmas lights as Tablelands residents begin their preparations for the festive season.

TATE Katter’s Australia Party crossbenchers Shane Knuth (Member for Dalrymple) and Robbie Katter (Member for Mt Isa) are refusing to concede defeat on any unfavourable electoral re-distribution for the Far North. Under the current state of play, regional Queensland is set to lose up to four seats at the next state electoral re-distribution, after the LNP’s Electoral (Re-distribution Commission) and Another Act Amendment Bill 2015 was re-

cently defeated in state parliament. These four electorates would be either completely dissolved or merged – with the south east tipped to be re-allocated all four seats. Last week, Mr Knuth and Mr Katter put forward a new private members bill (Electoral (Improving Representation) and Another Act Amendment Bill 2015), which would see the number of MP’s increase from 89 to 93 – with the purpose of maintaining support and resources to regional areas. Debate on the bill was also successfully fast

tracked, after the Independent Member for Cook Billy Gordon sided with Mr Knuth and Mr Katter. Whether Mr Gordon also extends his support on the KAP private members bill remains to be seen – although both crossbencher MP’s are hopeful. Mr Katter fears that if changes aren’t made to the current proposed re-distribution, regional Qld could be left worse for wear. “Unless the ‘Improving Representation Bill’ is passed, the next re-distribution due in 2016 will most likely result in more rural and regional seats

being lost to South East Queensland,” Mr Katter said. “We are here to maintain the current boundaries and to ensure the rural voice isn’t restricted further.” He added: “Because this bill provides for further seats in Queensland, it is expected they will be distributed to urban as per the existing models,” Mr Katter said. “We are conserving and improving current access, not stretching our electorates beyond capacity.” CONTINUED PAGE 3

ST ANTHONY’S Parish School in Dimbulah is gearing up for one of the biggest nights of the year in the town. The 2015 St Anthony’s ‘Christmas Fair’ will take on the theme of ‘Christmas around the World’ – in a true showcase of unity and multiculturalism. It will also be the first fair for new principal Brad Williams, who said the St Anthony’s community are eagerly anticipating a memorable evening for all in attendance. “It promises to be a fantastic night with a variety of entertainment, amusement rides for children, a number of food and produce stalls, as well as great items up for auction,” Mr Williams said. “The work that has gone into the planning and preparation of the fair by our committee and parents has been phenomenal and the response we have had by businesses has been overwhelming.” He added: “The ‘Around the World’ theme encompasses what our fair is really about. “It is a night about ‘community’ - where everybody is invited to come to St Anthony’s and enjoy themselves with everything that is on offer.” It is important to note that events of this magnitude do not just happen overnight. The entire St Anthony’s community have built a solid rapport with local parents and

businesses; and events such this exhibit the fruits of these partnerships. “We are very blessed to have an amazing sponsor and supporter base,” Mr Williams said. “Individuals and businesses continue to be extremely generous in their support of the Christmas Fair and of St Anthony’s School on a continual basis.

“We are very appreciative of the donations we have received and for the help that has been offered; and we would sincerely like to thank the many committee members, parents, staff, students, businesses, community members and sponsors for their support of the 2015 St Anthony’s Christmas Fair”. The Christmas Fair starts at 5pm this Saturday.

IF you venture into Piagnos Newspower on Byrnes Street, Mareeba, more often than not you will be greeted by youthful smiling faces. But beyond the smile and helpful service, many of these individuals are also high performing secondary school students – both academically and on the sporting field. Owners Kirrily and Sheldon Mulla have had many long-term junior staff work for them over several years, with three having gone on to be school captain at their high school. Kirrily said that she was very proud of the staff, who in many ways have become part of their own family. “We always look for several key qualities when employing junior staff,” she said. “Things like presentation, manners, confidence; and ability to hold a conversation are important factors. “Our junior staff takes great pride in the store and in their service. Their attention to detail is fantastic and they are quite often one

step ahead of the rest of us. “They have grown to be part of our family, which in turn means the staff treat the business as if it were their own and we are very grateful to them for that.” One of the talented juniors is Vivek Kolala, who has recently been appointed as a 2016 school captain for St Stephen’s Catholic College. Vivek said that he loves interacting with customers during each shift and that some of the skills from his job would aid him with his school captain responsibilities. Loyalty and belief are clearly two valued traits for the Mulla family, with long-term staff always considered nothing short of valuable. “Even after they have left school and continue their studies at Uni, they know they are always welcome back over the school holidays if they wish,” Kirrily said. “They are very valuable to us and will always have a position waiting for them in our business when they want.”

Vandals attack wildlife By Justin Fris

THE tightly knit community of the Kuranda Koala Gardens wildlife complex were left heartbroken last week, after a spineless act of cowardice was inflicted on their facility. Three juveniles (Aged 11, 9 and 7) broke into the precinct on Sunday, November 8 and proceeded to fatally harm several reptiles, along with distressing many kangaroos by repeatedly throwing rocks at them. All three have been investigated by local police for their actions – which has sent shockwaves throughout the region. The main offender of the attack was allegedly required to attend a 30 minute counselling session with local police, along with verbally saying ‘sorry’ to wildlife staff. Despite the horrific nature of this event, Kuranda Koala Gardens wildlife manager Peita Harrison said all staff were committed to further educate the community on

preserving and respecting animal life. “The best way to move on from this is to try and ensure that our younger generations are educated on how to treat animals and respect them,” she said. “Education is the key to learning on how to do these things; and this teaches them really good qualities about themselves, and in turn they can use these skills in everyday life. “For us, it is important of turning this negative situation into a positive.” Ms Harrison said staff noticed early on November 9 that the kangaroo contingent of their facility were not their usual selves. None of the kangaroos were left battered or bruised – however they were spooked from the ordeal. “You can usually tell if they are spooked because they lick their forearms,” Ms Harrison said. “They were showing signs that something had clearly distressed them. “When that happens, we usually go for a bit of a walk around the park to see if there is another animal around (for example, a

wild pig circulating the perimeter fence).” She added: “Initially they weren’t aware of the lizards missing. Firstly, they (staff) looked around the park and randomly noticed some rocks in the kangaroo enclosure which had clearly been thrown in there. “As strange as it sounds, we know where all of our rocks need to be placed and then continued through the park and saw some additional rocks in our photo area.” Once further investigations of the grim situation had been conducted, staff secured the facility and phoned police the following day – who hastily attended and completed their investigation. “The children are young, so they can still be educated,” Ms Harrison said. “We can encourage the local schools to teach these sort of things; teach about loving the animals and the environment of which they are living in.” The facility will be looking to upgrade their security capabilities in due course, with temporary measure having already been put in place.

We are here to maintain regional representation From Page 1 MR Katter added that the bill took influence away of politicians - with the re-distribution electoral committee picked by a bipartisan committee, instead of a sole minister. Member for Dalrymple Shane Knuth said he was pleased that the urgency of debate was recognised by Mr Gordon and the LNP – along with Speaker Peter Wellington not ruling the bill ‘out of order’. The bill is set to be debated during the next sitting of parliament and Mr Knuth said all will

be done to help keep solid rural representation in state parliament alive. “What we are trying to achieve with this bill is to stop losing at least four regional seats going from regional Qld,” he said. “This is all about representation. “We can’t have regional seats becoming less in number and bigger in size, while seats in Brisbane increase in number and become smaller in size.” Mr Knuth added that he had spoken with several constituents within the Dalrymple electorate, who are ‘gutted’ by the initial proposed

changes voted in by the Palaszczuk Government and the Independent Member for Cook. “They feel gutted that their seat looks like it is going to be annihilated,” he said. “The re-distribution may also mean that the likes of the Mulgrave and Hinchinbrook electorates may no longer exist.” Mr Knuth encouraged all those who feel passionate about restoring a parity of regional representation in politics to lobby their local member of parliament, in a bid to give Far North its fair share of representation ahead of the upcoming electoral re-distribution.

Kristie-Lee Cabassi from Bendigo Bank in Mareeba with with Jennifer Walsh from the Mareeba Animal Refuge.

Bank to help refuge The Mareeba Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank have put their hand up to support the community efforts of saving the Mareeba Animal Refuge. A $1000 bank account is on offer as a prize to a lucky winner – when they pay $5 to enter the competition. The $5 entry fee will go to the refuge, supporting their efforts to raise $50,000. Community Bank chairman Mr Gilbert Teitzel said: “Supporting the animal refuge in this way shows the value of having a Community Bank in our town. “The plight of the animal refuge has really touched the hearts of the community and the fundraising efforts have been very encouraging to date. “We had been intending to do some promotional activities to celebrate our 10th Birthday and when we read about the

plight of the animal refuge, we thought it would be great to incorporate the fundraising for the animal refuge into our birthday celebrations.” It is anticipated that putting a $1000 cash prize on the table just before Christmas will encourage several to participate in the competition, as it will provide extra money for Christmas festivities. People can enter the competition in front of the Mareeba Bendigo Bank branch on Byrnes Street, between 10.00am and 2.00pm on the following dates: November 16, 18, 19, 23, 25 and 26. The winner will be announced at the Community Bank’s 10 year birthday party on December 3; at which they will be celebrating $2 million worth of investment into the local communities.

Member for Dalrymple Shane Knuth is in favour of medical marijuana use in Queensland.

Knuth supportive of medical cannabis use By Justin Fris MEMBER for Dalrymple Shane Knuth has advocated his support towards the medical cannabis industry. Speaking in state parliament last week, Mr Knuth said there were several benefits to medical cannabis, if regulated correctly. Despite his support towards medical cannabis, Mr Knuth has made it unequivocally clear that he does not support or condone recreational use of marijuana. “I support legalising a new crop that will bring not only much-needed pain relief and health benefits to those who need to use it, but also an alternative crop for Queensland farmers,” he said. “The more we support new agricultural industries in Queensland, the greater our state will be. “Medicinal cannabis has the potential to provide economic benefits, health benefits and research opportunities in Queensland,” he added.

AGFORCE have echoed calls from state KAP crossbenchers for a higher mandate of ethanol in Queensland. Despite being somewhat pleased with current developments, Member for Mt Isa Robbie Katter said that a higher ethanol mandate would result in greater employment for the regional Qld.

“Currently, the cultivation of cannabis is prohibited in Queensland. This also includes the cultivation, possession and use of cannabis for the relief of pain by terminally patients and by children with drug-resistant epilepsy. “I have been approached by farmers in my electorate who tell me that they would embrace the opportunity to work with the government as growers of this new emerging medical crop.” Mr Knuth’s position on the matter mirrors that of the Turnbull Government, who appear to be on track to legalise medical cannabis cultivation. “The warm and wet Atherton Tablelands is well situated climatically for the production of medical cannabis; and, despite over 80 per cent of the state being in drought, this small area in my electorate, adjacent to the Wet Tropics, has reliable rainfall and consistent annual averages with well-drained fertile soil,” he said.

“It’s simple - if you are dinkum about stimulating employment in the regions you have to produce more than current production,” Mr Katter said. “As rightly pointed out by AgForce Grains President Wayne Newton, we have the capacity to produce 140 mega litres in Queensland today; and at two per cent, we will only use

58 mega litres.” Mr Katter said the KAP were happy to compromise with the Government for a four per cent mandate. “Even at four per cent, production will not be increased - however it will encourage interest and is a significant improvement on the two per cent proposal.”

The first team to annouce their intention to run in the upcoming MSC local government election on March 19, 2016 – ‘Nipper’ Brown, Kevin Davies, Mary Graham, Karen Ewin, Allan Holmes and Alan Pedersen.

Stepping up for election As the state prepares for local government elections on March 19, 2016, the jostling for positions has already begun as nominations and teams running for office becomes clearer. The first team of councillors to publicly come forward for the elections in the Mareeba Shire made it official last week. The team will consist of five sitting councillors: Mary Graham, Karen Ewin, Allan Holmes, ‘Nipper’ Brown and Alan Pedersen; with the sixth position being filled by Kevin Davies. Spokesperson for the group, Alan Pedersen, said the five sitting councillors had worked well together since de-amalgamation from the TRC and that the inclusion of Kevin Davies would bring a wealth of experience; and new blood to Council. The name Davies is very well regarded in local politics, as Kevin’s late father Cedric

was a former councillor and mayor of the old Mareeba Shire. Because the five sitting councillors came from different teams at the last election, they will not be submitting anyone as a mayoral candidate. Cr Pedersen said: “I believe we have done a good job over the last two years - especially considering what we inherited at de-amalgamation and the solid financial position we now find ourselves in today. “We have had to make many difficult and sometimes unpopular decisions, however this had put council in a much stronger position and now we need to keep the ship steady. “I realise that no government is perfect and we certainly have room for improvement - but we have consciously targeted our core business and actively sought grant funding to build in-

frastructure to drive our economy forward.” Cr Pedersen said that the current undivided nature of Council has meant that all councillors have had to focus on all parts of the shire from Kuranda, to Chillagoe to Irvinebank; and all the other far reaching areas of our shire that the team said they would continue to represent. “We will continue to ensure that each area receives their fair share of capital works, maintenance and attention to those issues which arise,” Cr Pedersen said. When asked about whom the new team would endorse or support as mayor in the upcoming election, Mr Pedersen added: “This team will fully support whoever is voted into the position. “We look forward to working as well as we have been to carry the shire and the region well into the future.”

Dieticians reach out to patients HEALTH services and patients across the Tablelands are receiving an added boost, through the initiative of the REACH project. Two local dieticians – Aneta Thomsen and Jessica Brown – are part of several personnel working with patients via teleconference in a bid to cater to their nutritional needs.

These services are not only widely used across the southern Tablelands, but also extend to the likes of Chillagoe and Georgetown. In the past, patients in communities such as Chillagoe had been required to utilise an infrequent bus service to attend appointments. Nutrition is vital for all members

of society – none more so than people living in the remote areas of the Far North – due to high rates of obesity and diseases in certain sectors. “We have reduced outpatient waiting times by almost 20 per cent and have greatly increased occasions of service for patients,” Ms Thomsen added.

Respectful ceremonies across FNQ

By Justin Fris

HUNDREDS of people gathered at the ‘Afghanistan Avenue of Honour’ in Yungaburra last Wednesday morning, for a fitting tribute to Remembrance Day. Across the Tablelands, similar services were also held in Atherton and Mareeba, as people sought to pay their respects. The intense heat saw several elderly members of the crowd seek shade under available shade cloths – alongside local schoolchildren who attended the event. Yungaburra’s service focused on the significance of dogs and the role that they have played in war-torn conflict – both Explosion Detection Dogs (EDD) and Special Operations Military Working Dogs (SOMWD). Official master of ceremonies Craig Reedman (‘Afghanistan Avenue of Honour’ president) began by highlighting the significance of the occasion. “We gathered here to pause on the eleventh hour, of the eleventh day, of the eleventh month,” he said. “It marks the day the guns fell silent in Europe – and ended the war to end all wars. “In recent times, this day has become a day to remember not just those who served, but those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.” Major Clare O’Neill (a veteran from the Afghanistan conflict) spoke about the importance that the dogs played in military life – and how they were equally valued members of the force. “This avenue does realise that humans have not been alone in this conflict,” she said. “Our handlers and their dogs have lived in service to us. “Side by side – and side by side, they have been recognised in this very special place. For generations, dogs and their handlers have shared an association. “Before the military recognised their official role, dogs were used as pets and mascots – sharing the soldiers’

hardships and helping soldiers maintain their humanity during the worst of times.” After the formalities of the ceremony had concluded, a special plaque in honour of all EDD and SOMWD was unveiled to the public. It is through the hard work of many volunteers (notably John Hardy) that the plaque now proudly sits amongst the ‘Afghanistan Avenue of Honour’ landscape.

New site for Lindsay

North Queensland Regional Manager Jason Cox and Transport Manager Jason Fitzgerald.

Lindsay Australia has committed enormous funds into the establishment of a transport hub, to be located on recently purchased land at the Mareeba Industrial Park. The multi million dollar investment will see the company move from their present site in Frew Street, Mareeba, to a new state-of-the-art facility at the Industrial Park. Lindsay has outgrown their present site and is looking forward to their new facility, which will encompass Lindsay Transport and Lindsay Rural

all under the one roof. Mareeba has developed as a major hub, North Queensland Regional Manager Jason Cox said. “After Cyclone Yasi wiped out Innisfail, we decided to move to Mareeba,” he said. “The region was identified as being a growth area in our line of work; and therefore the facility will be state-of-the-art, with weigh bridges, cool room and the ability to service our clients better and expand with the industry. “The new cold rooms alone will have a capac-

ity of 600 pallets at any given time - no one can do that. “Our plans also coincide with the anticipation of the upgrade to the Hann Highway - which when completed – will be of enormous benefit to our local clients. “Through innovation and an excellent infrastructure around the country, we can service people through our GPS tracking of produce; but while we are a big company, we are still very family orientated.”

Rural Office Manager Stephen Srhoj said that having everything under the one roof will allow Lindsay to streamline their operation while allowing farmers to pick and choose products. “Our association with Visy will further enhance our service by having all of our services in close proximity to each other,” he said. “Everything will be more effective for both sides of the business.” The new facility is anticipated to be completed by the end of 2016.

The Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Board acknowledge that the facility does not lend itself to the delivery of contemporary health services and urgently requires an upgrade. This need has also been acknowledge by the Minister for Health, Cameron Dick. Taking this important matter to the parliament, the Hononourable Member for Dalrymple Shane Knuth, tabled this petition which contained 787 signatures; together with an epetition and letters of support from community groups and individuals delivering a powerful message during his speech to the Queensland parliament on Tuesday, October 27, 2015. A copy of Shane’s speech can be sourced online and is well worth reading. Members of the Dimbulah/Mutchilba/Wolfram/Mulligan/ Petford districts are most appreciative of Shane’s efforts and wish to acknowledge Shane’s ongoing good work and dedication to the job. Unlike some MPs, Shane Knuth does not get bogged down in petty politics; neither does he sit around and rest on his laurels. Shane and his staff roll up their sleeves, get stuck in, and deliver. Not only does Shane represent his constituents, he goes out of his way, (adding to his already massive workload), taking forward important issues on behalf of residents outside of the electorate of Dalrymple. Good on you Shane – your efforts and persistence do not go unnoticed or unappreciated by the people of this region. Gaye Taylor Dimbulah

I have just read the letter in The Express from Louise Pensini regarding the APA theatre in Atherton. How refreshing to see the truth behind the trail of trying to find a positive outcome for all regarding the APA igloo. I happened to be at the meeting where David Scott from Tableland Investments addressed the Council meeting - suggesting a round table conference with all parties including the developers, TRC and the APA custodians. This is generally a good way to reach a sensible outcome with all having input. However, it appears that the council hierarchy decided that they would not entertain such a positive idea. Had there been a council that could work with the future of all parties at heart, the outcome could have been much smoother. The council were the ones holding the cards and had they chosen the idea of including all-in discussions, there would not have been need for a protest, which appears to have caused unnecessary ill-feeling. This was just another case of a council with weak leadership causing divisions in the community yet again. B.J. Prescott Tolga

Knuth takes his electorate seriously It is heartening to know that we have a member of parliament in Shane Knuth who takes his job seriously and lives up to the title “Honourable”. Shane takes the people’s issues forward to state parliament promptly, respectfully and with passion. As the MP for the seat of Dalrymple, Shane understands that the people of Far North Queensland need a strong voice in the Queensland parliament. For far too long, we the people of Far North Queensland, consider that we have been neglected by our state government and by the many pollies that live and work in the south-east region of our vast sunshine state. Following a public meeting in Dimbulah on September 14, 2015, a petition was circulated calling for an urgent and

Who’s locking up the Cape? – A Traditional Owner perspective Cape York has been changing over the last few decades. As part of the reconciliation process, many areas of grazing lease have been transferred into Aboriginal land and National Parks. Our homelands of Kalpowar were returned to us in 2006. Since then, we have run visitor management on a trust basis, with the expectation that visitors would respect

our country. In the time between handover and now, people have vandalised our land, our culture and our infrastructure. Vast numbers of breaches of our trust have left us frustrated, saddened and angry. Campers, fishers and illegal hunters have shown no regard for the environment, amenity of the land or direction from traditional owners. Our ‘Land Trust’ has worn the cost of these vandals for years. We have had enough. 2015 marked the date that we as a ‘Land Trust’ started to take control of the situation. We installed signs to make clear what areas were out of bounds (locked gates and fences hadn’t worked in the past). The signs were backed up with a ‘traditional owner’ presence of young trainee rangers with mentors. The rangers have been learning to approach campers and educate them about the changes that are occurring. Although we’ve had the capacity to prosecute campers that have set up in unauthorised areas, we have chosen this year to educate and ask these campers respectfully to move back to designated camping areas. What actions could make us so frustrated and angry that we would be forced to keep people out of some areas? Gravesites have been desecrated, cultural sites vandalised, signs shot and painted. Culturally sensitive areas have been violated, campers have defecated everywhere - even where toilet facilities were provided, installed infrastructure including a shelter shed and a set of toilets have been burnt to the ground by arsonists. Cattle management vehicles have been burnt or shot up or both, the roads have been destroyed every year by campers that smash their way to Bathurst Heads before the roads are open and the country is burnt out every year, but not by our hand. We’ve spoken to a large number of campers. The vast majority share our disappointment in the behaviour of a few. It is amusing that those that have disregarded no access signs, locked gates and other barriers believe they are not the bad guys and also complained that “they” are locking up the Cape. Ironically it is them that are causing the Cape to be locked up. Written by the Alka Bawar (Kalpowar) Aboriginal Corporation

Ray of hope from dedicated locals By Justin Fris SINCE 2003, loyal members of the Living Waters Church in Mareeba have been going beyond the call of duty to help those in need enjoy Christmas. Under the guidance of Pastor Jeff Xhafer, Living Waters has distributed just over 1000 food parcels (around $100,000 worth) all free of charge to the Tablelands community, as part of the ‘Living Waters Foodbank Appeal’. The Living Waters community has welcomed a new addition to the team – Chantelle Moss – who has recently been appointed as Foodbank Coordinator. In the lead up to the festive season, it is important to mention that many are doing it tough. With out-

sourcing, redundancies and cost cutting in vogue, many people in a wide range of industries may not know until a week out from Christmas if they will have a job next year. Pastor Xhafer said he would appreciate any donation of non-perishable food items for the drive – which would go a long way to ensuring those in need having a better Christmas. “Every little bit counts,” he said. “Unfortunately, the level of people who have fallen on hard times in our community is increasing. “It’s important to note that the majority of the people coming in are everyday hard working people, who are struggling to make ends meet.” Last year, the food drive was extra special for several people, with a number of Lions Christmas cakes be-

ing donated. These items may seem like a ‘luxury’ item for some, but for those who received a food parcel – it ensured a ‘blessed’ Christmas for them. “Many who received the Christmas cake in their parcel really felt blessed that it had been included,” Pastor Xhafer said. “It made them feel that ‘someone actually cares about me’.” He added: “I sincerely appreciate the input that The Express newspaper has shown over the years for the ‘Living Waters Foodbank Appeal’. If you would like to donate toward the appeal, you are able to drop off your donation to The Express (159 Walsh Street, Mareeba), or Living Waters Church (9 Park Avenue, Mareeba) where it will be collected by a Living Waters team member.

Discussion divided on ‘General Business’ of Council In August, amendments to the Tablelands Regional Council’s ‘Standing Orders’ were voted upon; which saw the current identity of ‘General Business’ reformed. The new model means that councillors interested in raising a ‘general’ issue need to do so with TRC CEO Ian Church 10 days or more out from the meeting. Mr Church will then go through usual protocol and endeavour to incorporate it on the meeting’s agenda. TRC management have complied with all Local Government Association of Queensland legislation in regard to the ‘Standing Orders’ amendment changes. They are well within their legal rights to adopt such changes.

But is the new system working? Are ratepayers satisfied with the new model? And would TRC management ever consider reverting back to ‘General Business’ in its pure form? Councillor Shaaron Linwood said she had received negative feedback from ratepayers on the matter – along with being personally ‘frustrated’ with the new model. “Every ratepayer who has bought up the issue with me has been very concerned,” she said. “And many have just shaken in dismay their heads and all see it, quite rightly, as something that has been bought in simply to stop any possibility of things being raised in front of the press.” Cr Rod Marti said that robust discussion was

imperative for positive community outcomes – and added that he would reinstate the TRC’s existing ‘Standing Orders’ if elected as mayor. “Good leadership is not about winning or losing, it’s about getting the best outcome for the community,” he said. “If you want the best outcome for the community, you need to have a robust respectful discussion. When there’s one tool in the tool box and it’s a hammer, it’s all about wielding power. “If elected as mayor next March, I’ll commit to reinstating Council’s ‘Standing Orders’ and return a voice to all those elected.” In order to achieve balance in reportage, both TRC Mayor Rosa Lee Long and TRC CEO Ian

Church were contacted for comment on how they believe the amended ‘Standing Orders’ were progressing. They were both asked the following: From a TRC perspective, how do you feel the new amended ‘Standing Orders’ has been received in meetings? Would TRC management ever consider reverting back to the traditional ‘General Business’ should councillor working relationships improve? Off the back of the excellent achievement by staff, have particular differences between councillors been resolved? Unfortunately for all purposes of this story, both said they had ‘no comments’ on the above.

Do you want to be a police officer? have you always wanted to be a police officer? The Queensland Police Service (QPS) are now recruiting - and this could be your opportunity to join the already 11,000 officers who protect and serve the community in all parts of our State. As police are given specific powers, recruiting people with the right skills, aptitude and attitude is critical to delivering the services expected by residents and visitors to Queensland. The ten steps to becoming a police officer are: express your interest, pass the entrance exam, pass your medical assessment, submit your recruit application, sit the psychological assessments, interview by a community member and police officer, integrity, referee and background checks, attend the ‘Applied Policing Skills Assessment Day’, enter the suitability pool and finally appointed to an academy intake. The QPS also employs public servants in administrative and specialist roles to assist in the delivery of policing services. Vacancies for these non-sworn positions within the QPS are advertised on the Queensland Government Smart jobs and careers website: www.jobs.qld.gov.au To find what positions are available, search the site by organisation (Queensland

Police Service). This will bring up all available non-sworn positions with the QPS throughout Queensland. Police Liaison Officers are employed by the Queensland Police Service to establish and maintain a positive rapport between indigenous and ethnic communities and the Queensland Police Service. Volunteers in Policing (VIPs) is a Queensland Police Service (QPS) initiative, created to encourage community participation in local policing services. Launched in 1997, the programme aims to enhance community service delivery by forging strong working partnerships between police and the people it serves. For example, in many police divisions volunteers in policing provide much needed follow up support to victims of crime, particularly residents who have been victims of property crime. The dedicated ‘Police Recruiting’ website: www.policerecruit.com.au provides all the information an applicant will need to progress through the recruit selection process. Visit the official Queensland Police Recruiting website to find out all you need to know about a secure job with hundreds of exciting career opportunities.

Foreign corporations want a slice FEDERAL Member for Kennedy Bob Katter has lambasted the Turnbull Government over the latest developments regarding Northern Australia. Mr Katter was left seething after he learned that the Government’s Northern Australia Infrastructure Facility requires a $50 million startup contribution for projects – something that many Australian companies may struggle to raise. It has already been a disastrous few months for Northern Australia, with the Turnbull Government recently agreeing to lease out Darwin’s port to a Chinese corporation for the next 99 years. This means for all of the Australian (and nonAustralian) ships arriving and departing the port,

they are required to pay a ‘toll’ to use the facility – which all goes to the Chinese corporation. Mr Katter said he was concerned that the $50 million price tag will suit the foreign corporations and disillusion the Australian companies. “The Financial Review says that the Government is already in discussions with Landbridge, a Chinese Corporation who own the Darwin Port, and Wilmar International, a foreign owned corporation that every sugarcane farmer in North Queensland probably hates,” Mr Katter said. “Add to that list JBS Swift; and ask any cattlemen who’s being paid $3 for meat that’s being sold for $20 what he

Annie’s

thinks of them. “But these are the companies we’re subsidising. This is not giving our resources to foreign corporations, this is paying them to take it. “To get the minimum $50 million subsidy, you have to put in $50 million; and I can tell you because I have got all the red hot projects in North Queensland - they’ve got as much chance of raising $50 million as flying to the moon.” He added: “They will take all of these resources - they will take all the water from the rivers, and they will be subsidised by the Federal Gov-

ernment.” Atherton Chamber of Commerce vice president Christine Doan said she was concerned that there was ‘little scope’ for smaller businesses and projects within the Northern Australia White Paper. “I’ve been disappointed with the fact that there is no real scope within the Northern Australia White Paper for us ‘little folk’,” she said. “And if the start up costs for a loan are $50 million, we are all ‘little folk’(in comparison to big foreign corporations).”

“NEW BUSINESS OF THE YEAR!”

Award winning new business Traction 4x4 has only been operating in its current form since January this year. Prior to this, Vince Tatti and his staff were operating on the other side of Byrnes Street, as ‘Tableland Front End Specialists’. Since the move to 289 Byrnes Street, (next to Hansen Ford) the business has surged ahead in leaps and bounds. So much so, that it came as quite a surprise to Vince and his team when the Mareeba Chamber of Commerce awarded Traction 4x4 with the ‘New Business of the Year’ award at their gala presentation night, on Saturday, October 24. “It really was a surprise; as we have only been operating for a few months from the current location and we didn’t even go to the awards because we thought ‘no chance’,” Mr Tatti said. “We had booked a weekend away and I was playing soccer with the seniors team; and at about 10pm at night, (we were in bed by then) we got a text from Sonya Alba-Miller that we had won - and she said ‘you better get over here’.” “My Aunt (Susie Alba), was there to accept the award on our behalf and we would like to thank those that nominated us for the award and the judges for their wisdom.” He added: “It‘s been a steady start in the new business. Our showroom is beginning to take shape with our product range from TJM. It’s hard not to notice us on the main street, so walk in traffic is excellent and we are getting busier and busier as time goes by.” Traction 4x4 caters for all off road enthusiasts with quality products from TJM and they are also agents for Fulcrum suspension products. The School Room One of our most popular museum displays with the ‘Junior Set’ is the ‘School Room’. The old desks with the fold back lids and the “A like an Apple on a Twig” chart are readily recognised by the senior generation, but also cause considerable fascination for children. We often conduct school tours; and to make the school room experience more realistic, we have a retired “old fashioned” school teacher to conduct the class. The children sit at the desks and adhere to: “sit up - backs straight - no talking.” The children are asked to write their names on the slates with slate pencils. The teacher waves the cane around and threatens the children that they’ll stay in after school if their work isn’t good enough. After one such lesson, one child was heard to say with a curl of the lip: “That teacher oughtta take a (chill) pill!” We have original punishment sheets from local schools, circa 1918. It seems a young lad named George would have severely tried the teacher’s patience by “throwing cow-dung at the girls and running away when called”, for which he received six strokes across the buttocks. And again: “truanting”, which earned him four strokes on hands and four on the buttocks. A recent visitor to the Heritage Centre recalled: “I remember the cane very well, but I also recall what happy days they were”.

ambulance ever used and could carry six patients. In 1950 during its first year of service, the rail motor more than justified its existence by travelling 6879 miles and picked up 72 patients. Rail ambulances were on a speed limit of 20 mph and at one time, it was dropped to 15 mph; and it took quite a bit of lobbying by the Queensland Am-

bulance Transport Board (QATB) to get the limit back to 20 mph. The Mareeba Rail Ambulance served an area from Chillagoe, Mt Mulligan, Julatten and Mt Molloy. Rail ambulances were necessary in the wet seasons because road bridges were low and quickly flooded, as rail lines were built on higher embankments. 1983 was the last time the old AEC Rail Ambulance went off on a mission of mercy. A group of concerned citizens named the ‘Mareeba Historical Preservation Society’ purchased the rail ambulance; and in 1995 it was moved to the Mareeba Heritage Museum.

terpretation is provided throughout the museum. There are many interactive activities for children and as a free family attraction, the museum certainly provides an invaluable addition to the visitor experience to the Tablelands region. Our latest acquisition is Jamieson House, which has created a lot of interest and enthusiasm from the community. This house is an old Queenslander, built circa 1905. As always, the local community has given outstanding monetary and inkind support for this renovation project. Mareeba Heritage Centre Committee would like to acknowledge that without the vision of Ron Blundell, this project would not have eventuated. The Committee would also like to thank Ron Blundell and Noel Morris for their great personal efforts in restoring Jamieson House to its former glory.

What’s on at the Rising Sun Cinema One of the most anticipated movies of the year comes to Mareeba's Rising Sun screen this week – THE HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY (PART 2), brings this huge series to its climatic end. Continuing for a second great is one of the biggest Bond films of all. Daniel Craig stars in SPECTRE, which has broken cinema box office records worldwide.

As the war of Panem escalates to the destruction of other districts by the Capitol, Katniss Everdeen, the reluctant leader of the rebellion, must bring together an army against President Snow, while all she holds dear hangs in the balance.

SPECTRE

A cryptic message from Bond's past sends him on a trail to uncover a sinister organization. While M battles political forces to keep the secret service alive, Bond peels back the layers of deceit to reveal the terrible truth behind SPECTRE. Review by Louise Keller: Living up to the promise, SPECTRE treats us to everything on the Bond menu - thrilling action, spectacular locations, nail-biting moments, dry humour, glamour girls, gadgets and a chilling villain. Daniel Craig continues his run as a splendid Bond, boasting just the right stuff: a mix of cool and hot in all departments, intellectual, emotional and physical. The result is a film generously endowed with scale as well as a welcome attitude towards killing and violence that is far from complacent. In fact one of the crucial points made by Ralph Fiennes' M in his defence of preserving the endangered 00 section, is the concept of a licenced-to-kill agent whose skills include assessing when NOT to kill. With the words The Dead Are

Alive, the film begins in every sense with a bang by a visually extravagant set piece at the Festival of the Dead in Mexico, complete with its ghoulish skeletal theme and eye-popping costumes. The octopus insignia ring Bond prises from an adversary is cue for the famed music title sequence (Sam Smith's The Writing's on the Wall, not one of the most memorable), involving slithering octopus tentacles and shapely women. On the flip side of the enemy terrorist network with the octopus emblem, is that of the revamping of MI5 network, promising to shut down MI6 and make 00 agents obsolete. Collecting information is what's at stake. (Fiennes is aptly gruff at the prospect as well as irritated by 007's disregard for authority. MI5 boss, Andrew Scott's C is someone we love to hate.) The screenplay is clever in that it incorporates critical elements from earlier films, playing nicely alongside the backstories, offering depth to relationships and delivering overall emotional impact. There's plenty for which Bond aficionados can watch from the easy-to-spot white chinchilla to other references and elements that are best discovered in the context of the film. Director Sam Mendes keeps things together as well as moving: there is a constant sense of pace and fluidity as all the elements are meshed together. The locations are varied, transporting us from rainy London to dusty Morocco, dazzling Rome and the splendour of the snowy majestic Austrian Alps. (The aerial shots are breathtaking.) Boats, planes, trains and cars are all integral in the action sequences - the Rome night car chase in the £3 million Aston Martin prototype is especially exhilarating (watch for the landing); the plane stunts are electrifying. It is somewhat reassuring to see Bond with sweat on his face. As for the humour, there are wonderful droll touches from Ben Whishaw's po-faced Q and Craig's delivery is as dry as his famed, shaken martinis. Everything is there ready for tasting.

The LAND Questions linger over ‘no market failure’ guarantee By Justin Fris BOTH the Independent Member for Cook Billy Gordon and the Tableland Canegrowers have their doubts over claims from the Queensland Productivity Commission (QPC) that the sugar industry will be exempt from ‘no market failure’. Mr Gordon said he was keen to seek clarification on the terminology, as he believes the current approach could be considered ‘presumptive’. “I don’t believe that there won’t be any market failure,” he said. “This is crystal-ball economics that is presumptive. The level of guarantees that the QPC is suggesting in its statement have to substantiated, with facts. It is a draft - but I am disappointed with the impact assessment conclusions about the miracles of a free-market and competitive choice.” He added: “I’m concerned that the morale in the growing sector, due to this impasse, is at an all-time low; and this includes growers in the Cook electorate. “Growers have said to me that without some form of regulation, they won’t risk re-investment. This isn’t scaremongering. It will be tragic for canegrowers, but inevitably, it’s going to impact upon future economic investment by the milling sector.” Tableland Canegrowers manager Bronwyn Dwyer agreed with Mr Gordon and said the current marketing situation had essentially created an ‘impasse’ for local canegrowers.

“Canegrowers on the Tablelands who supply MSF sugar will have no choice but for the miller to market their sugar post-2016, if the Amendment Bill is not passed through parliament in December,” she said. “They will no longer have access to the transparent, industry marketing body Queensland Sugar. “The uncertainty surrounding the marketing, coupled with low sugar prices, the predicted El Nino and the spiralling cost of electricity are grave causes for concern for growers on the Tablelands.” Ms Dwyer added that the proposed Amendment Bill on sugar marketing would give growers greater transparency into who can market their sugar. “Under the current arrangements Wilmar Sugar, MSF and COFCO growers will not have a choice as to marketing arrangements after 2016,” she said. “They will be forced to market their sugar through their miller and will have little transparency around how the price is derived or how the payment system will work. “The Amendment Bill will allow growers choice as to who markets their sugar. “This choice will include the not for profit, industry owned marketing body Queensland Sugar who has the facilities and systems in place to provide transparent marketing and pricing options and who returns all profits back to its suppliers.”

A robust, safe device By Dick Eussen Following up on last fortnight’s report on safety devices for quads (which covered the QLD-made Quadsafe ROPS), we will now look at a more robust and safer device - the award-winning hoop shaped ATV Lifeguard from New Zealand. It is designed to hold up a quad in excess of 350kg. It is passive, flexible and yielding. Its segmented construction is a new concept, designed to flex around a rider’s body, limbs or head, during impact should the quad roll on the rider and pin him/her down with the hoop. As it cannot collapse or flatten, it will support a quad off the ground and allow the rider to crawl out from under the machine. Should it make contact with the rider, it will flex about the body and may cause some bruising - but it will not break bones. The bar arch is comprised of a series of injection moulded nylon segments that are “chain” linked

to form a flexible arc over the back of a quad. It’s simple to fit on tubular steel racks of most quads, but won’t install on plastic racks or those fitted with cargo boxes - unless purpose fittings are made. The ATV Lifeguard is designed to fit on the rear carrier of quads. Tests have concluded that most carriers are strong enough to support the full force and weight of quads involved in a rollover or flip when fitted with such a life-saving device. It prevent the full weight of the quad contacting the ground and hopefully saving the rider from serious injury. Tests with the ATV LifeGuard have shown that should the quad back or rear flip it will land on the hoop of the device and fall on its side, not on the rider. However, the front of the quad and the handlebar still make full contact with the ground if it rolls or flips. The ATV Lifeguard prevents the full weight of the quad’s rear coming down on the rider. It is generally a full roll-over that pins the rider. To learn more, visit www.atvlifeguards.com

Mareeba football’s first lady Newly-elected 2016 MUFC Club President Tamara Srhoj.

Tate and Thurston tour the Tablelands By Justin Fris

By Justin Fris

THE Mareeba United Football Club has formally elected Tamara Srhoj as club president for the 2016 football season. A passionate member of the Mareeba community, Srhoj has a wealth of knowledge of both grassroots football in the region and helping others. With her family enshrined within Mareeba football history, she has always been involved from a young age at Borzi Park either as a player, volunteer or committee member. “My interest in football began as a young child,” she said. “The family has always been involved with MUFC and it was just a part of us. “I played as a junior, but stopped during my early teens and took a break for a few years. And last year, I decided to come back as a player.” She added: “(In terms of administration) I wanted to get back involved with the football club in town, as football and sport has in some ways decreased a little bit over the years. “I just wanted to get back into it and increase the sporting encouragement and participation at both junior and senior level.” Last season, Srhoj served as a member of the club’s committee – along with co-ordinating the ‘Work for the Dole’ program, where participants complete their program hours at Borzi Park. “The ‘Work for the Dole’ program is a godsend to the club,” she said. We have a very good relationship with

‘Busy at Work’, which is based here in Mareeba. “We do ‘Work for the Dole’ four days a week at the club, where we have an average of 10-15 participants sprucing up the club.” Without volunteers, clubs like MUFC wouldn’t exist. Srhoj said the importance of volunteers at the club is imperative. “Volunteers are the backbone of any club,” she said. “We are all volunteers ourselves and we are all here to help football thrive in both Mareeba and Far North Queensland.” Joining Srhoj on the executive committee is her father Stephen Srhoj as vice president, Jodi Allen as junior president, secretary Brenda Savaglio, treasurer Giulie Alderton and club register Rosetta Spena, along with a large committee of dedicated volunteers who have taken on a host of various roles. Increased participation in both junior and senior levels are at the forefront of Srhoj’s priority list. Along with this, is intent in continuing to foster close, solid working relationships with members of the community and local volunteers. “Our main thing for 2016 is increasing the participation at both levels,” she said. “Along with this, improving the actual attendances at games. We’d love to go back to the games where there were 600-700 people attending a home game weekend.” In the interim, Srhoj said she would be attending meetings with the MUFC committee and the new custodians from FNQ Football, in a bid to further strengthen ties with between the club and the league’s governing body over the off-season.

Heat fails to deter Yungaburra Triathlon participation The second annual Yungaburra Triathlon, held at the weekend was a rounding success, drawing participants, spectators and sponsors to the picturesque Atherton Tablelands to help raise funds for our wounded warriors and awareness of the Soldier On organisation.

MAREEBA State High School students were treated to rugby league royalty last Tuesday morning week, with North Queensland Cowboys/ Queensland Maroons duo Brent Tate and Jonathon Thurston stopping by for a brief visit. Off the back of their watershed 1716 NRL grand final win over the Brisbane Broncos, the Cowboys squad have been touring the Far North and sharing their success (and a glimpse of the grand final trophy) with their fans. But for the students and onlookers who gathered, it was a rare insight into life behind a legend. Thurston – regarded as one of the most humble men in the NRL – spoke of initial homesickness and how he managed to find his way in the NRL landscape. Originally from Brisbane, Thurston packed his bags for Toowoomba as a teenager and attended a

specialist rugby league school. He managed to catch the eye of one of Ricky Stuart’s scouts, and subsequently was signed to Canterbury’s U/20’s squad – but the road was far from easy. “That was probably the hardest move,” he said. “I remember being in Ricky Stuart’s office crying and asking him to let me go home; as it was starting to get tough for me being away from family. “So he let me go home for the weekend, as long as I promised I’d be back on the Monday. I ended back going down and doing the best job I could.” Thurston added: “I remember I used to wash cars all day (during his time at the U/20s) from 7am to 2pm in the afternoon everyday; that was my job before my full-time contract.” Students were given the opportunity to ask questions to both players and the morning appeared to be enjoyed by all involved.

Prien picked for Qld U/12 cricket side

TALANTED Mareeba youth cricketer Jett Prien has been selected in the Queensland U/12 schoolboys cricket team. Prien – a gifted left hander batsman – enjoyed success at the state championships in Ipswich, before achieving his impressive selection. “My favourite shot is the pull shot,” he said. “I’m also not too bad between the wickets.” On January 2, Prien will head down to the south east, where he will participate in a week-long camp prior to the national

championships, which will be held in Brisbane between January 9 and 15. Mareeba Bandits Cricket Club icon Robert ‘Bomber’ Adams praised Prien’s selection, saying that he will grow tremendously from the experience. “When these boys head off to state or national championships, they always learn a lot and come back as better cricketers,” he said. Adams added: “The reason why cricketers like Jett do so well, is through the support and dedication of club cricket coaches and volunteers.” “These experiences never leave you.”

With impressive batting at their disposal, the hosts finished on 9 (dec)/224 from 47.1 overs. Mission Beach is currently in total disarray - closing on 4/23 - with their innings only 10 overs old.
