It’s the end of an era for Mareeba as the town says goodbye to its RSL club after sub-branch members voted to close the business on Saturday morning. A meeting was held over the long weekend to vote on the future of the club after it ran into substantial financial difficulties with some reports claiming the business had been running at a loss for more than a few years. Members voted to close the doors immediately with stunned customers turned away after being told the business was no longer operating. The move comes after weeks of speculation in the town and now leaves four full time staff members and other casual staff without a job. President of the sub-branch Paul McGregor-Jones read out a statement after the meeting expressing his disappointment. “The Mareeba RSL subbranch has been notified that the members of the Mareeba RSL club have voted to close the club including the bistro, bar, cafe, gaming lounges and the cinema,” he said. “This is a significant loss to the local community and the club employees, however the sub-branch has been advised by the club committee it is not financially viable to continue operating. “The club committee has appointed a liquidator to finalise our standing employee’s entitlements and payments to the
creditors. “The sub-branch is disappointed to lose a popular community hub and will review its options in the near future.” He said the future of the Mareeba RSL Club was now in the hands of the liquidator. The Mareeba RSL sub-branch will continue as normal. Club president Tony Gray has only been part of the committee for a few months and said the business should have been shut months ago. “This committee has done all it can now to try and rectify the debt and we were able to act on a lot of it, but the major debt we couldn’t attack because the trade was not there,” he said. “Everyone around town has been doing bad. The club’s getting a bit tired and maintenance issues which probably turns people away a little bit as well, but what can you do? The theatre held its own and the new chef in here did a marvellous job.” Mr Gray said it was last minute legal advice that forced the closure. “We had some late legal advice that came through to us from outside influences stating that we must do this and that,” he said. “Major debtors weren’t calling us in and we were working with them to try and sort things out but in the end certain people have said enough’s enough and wouldn’t let us go ahead anymore.” He declined to reveal the size of the debt owed.
