Look out, look out – there are children about
WITH schools back in full swing this week, police are urging motorists to be aware of kids on the road and the 40kmh speed limit in school zones. With large numbers of children on pedestrian crossings, motorists should take extra care and be more vigilant when driving in a school zone. Motorists should also be aware that double fines and demerit points take effect if you have been booked more than once in a 12 month period. DESPITE embarking on her greatest ever challenge, Mareeba-born Noeline Ikin is still looking ahead to the future. Recently diagnosed with brain cancer (a malignant brain tumour), Noeline had to withdraw as the Federal Liberal candidate for Kennedy. She learned of her diagnosis towards the end
of 2015, while in Canberra lobbying for projects in the Kennedy electorate – which included the Hann Highway, Kuranda Range and Nullinga Dam. But while some individuals might admit defeat or ponder the worst, Noeline is determined that this situation is only temporary; and she will continue to embrace living each day in Far North Queensland.
Two of her several personal passions are family and a love of the bush (Noeline and her husband Trevor are currently based in Georgetown) – both of which have shaped both her mindset and life for the better. She is especially close with her mother; a bond which is strong as ever, despite lengthy periods away due to political commitments. “I’ve come from a working class family and
have always had the attitude that you work for what you want,” she said. “Nothing is going to be given to you, so you have to go out and get it. Without a doubt, the family and the upbringing I’ve had in Mareeba has set me up to have some skills and attitudes that were very good for campaigning. CONTINUED PAGE 3

EXCEPTIONAL country music talent Jade Holland is increasing her popularity within the industry, after several stellar performances at the Tamworth Country Music Festival. Time in Tamworth capped off a memorable 2015 for Jade, who toured with the PBR, (Professional Bull Riders Australia) where she was given an opportunity to perform our national anthem in front of sell out crowds. Additionally, she also performed in China, along with major shows in Brisbane and Sydney – with her fans able to track her progress via social media. Coupled by her success, Jade’s latest single ‘Leather and Les Paul’ is steadily making its way up the Australian country music airplay chart. “The song was actually written for me by a lady who I spoke with in Tamworth,” she said. “She got in contact with me and said: ‘I thought of you and I wrote this song about your experiences’. “It was really incredible, because I only spoke with her for two hours. been told that by several people that they find it a really catchy song.” But away from singles, shows and touring, there is a vital ingredient that Jade has always carried with her – never forgetting those who support her. Often before a show, Jade will speak with members of the audience. She will gauge their mood and ask them what type of music they would like to hear. “It’s all about the fans,” she said. “I want everyone to come to my shows and have a really great time. “No two audiences are the same – so it is important to give it everything you’ve got.” Jade is almost set for a tour to Western Qld, where she will play in Cloncurry, Mt Isa and a host of towns along the way. Preparations are also being made for a Far North tour in late-March, which likely would include shows in Atherton and Mareeba. The Mareeba and Dimbulah Community Bank branches 2016 ‘Sponsorship Round’ is now open for applications. Community Bank chairman Mr Gilbert Teitzel said: “The annual sponsorship round was very successful last year and provided much needed financial support to the many volunteer not-for-profit organisations and clubs in our region.” “Sponsorships play a key role in stimulating growth at our local Bendigo Bank branches and it is the profits from the branches that fund investment back into our communities,” said Mareeba branch manager Mr Stephen Gear. “We work hard to develop strong relationships with our sponsor groups and encourage their members to consider Bendigo Bank for their banking, financial and insurance needs.” Nearly 50 groups received sponsorship support last year and the Community Bank is anticipating another strong response this year. Over $2 million has been provided for our communities over the last 10 years, and $1 million has been pledged to the Bendigo Bank Recreational Complex project that is currently under development. Due to the commitment to the Recreational Complex there will not be any grants for community projects announced this year. Drop into your local branch or contact Diana Pregl via email at dianapregl@ mdfs1.com.au for a sponsorship application form. Applications close February 26, 2016.

MSC added to NDRRA list ment Road which Council has a contract to maintain,” he said. “The council must pay an amount upfront for each event, however beyond that, all of those costs to bring those roads back to the standard that they were before the event, are covered by other levels of government.” Independent Member for Cook Billy Gordon said he welcomed the decision from the Palaszczuk Government. “I very much welcome the Government’s policy on this,” he said. “Activating MSC’s eligibility means that when in need, it can be assured of the Government’s timely, relief assistance. “There’s already six other local councils within the Cook electorate that are on the list; a reminder of the vulnerability of the place from natural events, like flooding. “Affected communities and individuals expect a prompt and pro-active response from public authorities.”

THE Mareeba Shire Council has been officially notified that an event has been declared following the recent downpour; and has been added to the federal NDRRA list. The declaration provides for funding to be provided under the national-based Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements fund, which is funded 25 per cent by the State and 75 per cent from the Federal Government. MSC Mayor Tom Gilmore said the declaration would be well received by many in the region, given the frequency of inclement weather during the wet season. “Once we had that event, the Mareeba Shire Council applied for a declaration of an event–following the heavy rain of recent times – particularly in the western areas, due to the damage caused to our local shire roads, and to the Bourk Develop-
Ikin determined to return better than ever FROM PAGE 1 “I believe these values are going to set me up to beat this cancer. The country upbringing and the way we live in this region is tough. “There is a level of grit that people have in these areas and you just have to have it. If you want to get ahead in this area, you have to have it. But that actually makes you a person who can do a lot more.” On February 3 (today), Noeline will begin radiotherapy and chemotherapy treatment in Townsville; but rather than focus on her situation, she is keen for a greater community focus on others battling cancer in our region. “From my point of view, (this) it’s temporary,” she said. “I’ve gone through child birth three times and I believe it is just the same. “You just deal with it. You know you will get some reward at the end of it, so you just focus on that. But there are a lot of people diagnosed with cancer in FNQ (2600 every year, 9000 currently alive in FNQ having battled cancer).” She added: “It’s nice to receive support from people, because I want to beat this for them as well as me, but it bothers me that a lot of other people in the region are battling cancer and they haven’t received the support that I’ve received. “I feel guilty or a little bit embarrassed that I’ve received all this atten-

tion; and yet there are so many other people going through the same thing. “I want to somehow share the energy that I’ve received with them – I want to help them. The other thing is people have said that they want to fundraise for my situation and I understand the feeling of wanting to help as I have done this in the past for people too. “I’d rather work with others and fundraise for everyone – recognition and support needs to be given to everyone – not just me. Some of the services that will help me will help a lot of rural people for many years so it would feel good that if we do any fundraising, it goes towards things that help many.” On Australia Day, Noeline was awarded ‘Citizen of the Year’ by the Etheridge Shire Council and was humbled by the acknowledgement. “It really made me very happy,” she said. “I really love my community up there and they have been very good to me. “I’ve tried hard to do things for the community and getting that award meant a lot to me because that area and those people mean a lot to me. “These are the things that provide you with energy and provide you the will to continue on and do stuff; and without a doubt, all of these things help me want to fight the battle even more.”

‘I want to help others’ By Justin Fris
LOCAL businessman Michael Lawrence has officially nominated to represent division four at the upcoming Tablelands Regional Council election. A committed family man, Mr Lawrence is well known locally for always conducting business in an ethical and methodical manner. After lengthy discussions with his family over Christmas, Mr Lawrence said he felt the time was right to stand for the TRC. “My wife Madonna has been very supportive,” he said. “Standing for Council is a minimum four year term – it’s something you can’t get a couple of years into and then decide that it isn’t for you. It is a very important decision. “Wearing a variety of hats, I’ve presented to Council on a variety of different issues and I’ve been able to see

what they go through. “I’ve also had a chat with some of the other councillors about some of the realities of being a councillor. I know the TRC has an excellent team of staff.” Throughout business, family and life, Mr Lawrence has always believed in one common element – respect. “Respect is very important – whether it is to another individual, the environment, staff, within your organisation or to other organisations,” he said. “If you have respect underpinning your values and dealings, then you will achieve better outcomes; even if they don’t always benefit you.” Mr Lawrence said he was committed to sustaining and improving growth within the region, as he firmly believes the potential for the region is encouraging. Additionally, he is also keen to ensure that services and support for elderly members of the community are managed appropriately, along with ensuring the long term viability of local small businesses. In his spare time, Mr Lawrence loves spending time outdoors with his family. On a day off, you are more than likely to spot him mountain biking, or fishing across our vast region. “Everything I’ve done in my career has been a stepping stone to this point,” he said. “I’ve put a lot of time and thought into running for Council. “I have no axe to grind in running for Council and I want to help others by continuing to make our region a better place to live.”

Forsyth committed to solving problems By Justin Fris
INITIATIVE and hard work go hand in hand for Rangeview resident Tim Forsyth (pictured), who has officially nominated to run for division six at the upcoming TRC election. Mr Forsyth, who has worked across a multitude of industries, is a disciplined individual who prides himself on solving problems to better the community. A proud member of several local not-for-profit organisations (including FNQ Quadriders) Mr Forsyth is well positioned on the issues that matter most to division six. “The councillors and mayor are there to guide the council,” he said. “They’re not there to race around after the roof on a busted toilet block. “We’ve got people in our local area who are very good at working with things like that. We’re there to guide and direct. “We (TRC) aren’t doing complaints very well. One of the things I would like to do is to review complaints within my division; and see if I’m comfortable with how they were resolved.” He added: “And to actually encourage people to complain. Because without the complaints, the council doesn’t have the data to receive early warning alarms that something is wrong.” From his time in the 77th squadron in the Australian Air Force, through to his time as a local small business owner – Mr Forsyth has revelled in solving problems. If something needs fixing, he will source what is required and do what it takes to rectify the situation.

Mr Forsyth said he believed the key issues in the division related to the Mt Emerald Wind Farm, enhanced celebration of VP (Veterans of the Pacific) Day and drainage infrastructure in Rangeview. “We’ve got to keep our fingers on the wind farm’s pulse,” he said. “I’m not saying yes or no to wind farms, but we’ve got to keep updated on what is going on; along with the effects it is having on the community.” When advised on the recent TRC vote to hold a meeting casting interest for an advisory committee for the Rocky Creek War Memorial Park (adding further bureaucracy), Mr Forsyth said: “That’ll (new format) go. I’m a third generation serviceman and I’ll be into it boots and all – and be very keen to expand the day.” He added: “I’m also concerned about the current state of country racing across the Tablelands; and I’ll be lobbying hard to get our racing funding back.”
Former queen to lead Maize Festival Much to the delight of locals, former Maize Festival Queen Taleesha Fegatilli has been elected President of the Maize Festival committee for 2016. This year’s festival was in danger of being cancelled unless more volunteers came forward to help with the organisation of the event. The festival, in its 54th year, is seen as the major function for the region for local socialites. Now with a rejuvenated committee, and Taleesha at the helm, the festival is destined for success. The remainder of the committee is made up of Vice President Jeni Duck, Secretary Alicia Jaggard, and Treasurer Melanie Mahoney.

Winners are grinners Local Mareeba mango farmers Roy and Elizabeth Fresta, who run their property on Hawkins Road, have produced the heaviest KP mango; weighing in at 1.536kg. As the 2015/2016 mango harvest comes to a close, we (The Express) would like to thank the many farmers that took part in the inaugural Total Food Network KP mango competition. The Express, together with Total Food Network and the Mareeba and District Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association, put it to farmers in the region to find the biggest KP (Kensington Pride) mango. The competition was launched at the MDFVGA dinner in September last year by Managing Editor Carl Portella, who outlined the details of the competition to growers. Mr Fresta said his son Robert looked after the mango. “He gave it some tender loving care and gave it some secret fertilizer. He got quite attached to it before he had to detach it from the tree.” Joe Moro, President of MDFVGA, emphasised that this year’s mango crop did not produce large mangoes as was consistent in past seasons. “A combination of weather conditions, including a prolonged winter and the lack of seasonal rain at the right time, prevented the fruit from potentially growing to

heavier specimens. “I am quite surprised at the weight of the winning mango a fine effort from the Fresta family.” The Express editor Carl Portella said: “We were a little concerned at the start of the season when mangoes weighing just 700-800 grams were coming in, but as the season progressed they got bigger. “The competition was taken on in a healthy competitive environment and I think farmers warmed to the concept of nurturing a number of specific mangoes in their crop to be a possible winner. “I commend them for their efforts and hope they take it up again with the same enthusiasm next year.” Clinching second place in the competition were Dimbulah farmers Bruno and Diane Michielin, of Top Eureka Road, whose KP weighed in at 1.265kg. A last minute entry on Sunday saw third spot awarded to Alfio, Teresa, John and Grace Bonaccorsi of Tinaroo Creek Road, Mareeba with a 1.215kg KP mango. The top three winners will each share in the $1000 prize money – with first place receiving $500, second $300 and third $200. Prize money will be awarded to the winners at the Mareeba Chamber of Commerce luncheon on Wednesday, March 2, at the Mareeba RSL.

Australia Day awards across the region
Rain fails to dampen MSC’s Australia Day ceremony A rollicking thunderstorm and driving rain did little to dampen official Australia Day festivities in Mareeba last Tuesday. Originally scheduled for an outdoor setting at the Mareeba Turf Club, dedicated volunteers ensured a virtually seamless transition to the main undercover area. Australians young and old lined the seats as they took part in one of the most significant days on Australia’s calendar. Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Tom Gilmore officially commenced the ceremony, which also included musical interludes from talented local singer, Kiara Cabassi. “Today we are here to celebrate,” he said. “Here to celebrate our magnificent country. Celebrate our prosperity – and as a country, recognise those very special people who have been nominated for Australia Day awards today. “In short, we are here to celebrate who we are; and we look forward to the coming year with optimism, promise and resolve to make this a fine year.” Mayor Gilmore paid tribute to Arch McArthur and Joshua Priestly, who were nominated as ‘Citizen of the Year’ and ‘Junior Citizen of the Year’ respectively. “Mr McArthur was given the honour in recognition of the strong sense of community he has shown over many decades,” he said. “Arch has a natural graciousness which he extends to everyone he deals with, both socially and professionally.” Mr McArthur’s involvement with Kuranda-based projects is nothing short of legendary. Some of the projects he has been involved with include: Kuranda Recreation Centre and the Kuranda Amphitheatre Soci-
ety, Kuranda Infrastructure Advisory Committee, Kuranda Neighbourhood Centre and the Kuranda RSL Memorial Bowls and Social Club. Along with pure involvement, Mr McArthur has been unwavering in his pursuit of grant funding and design of key initiatives within the district. Upon receiving his award, Mr McArthur said: “I thought I knew all the secrets of Kuranda; (laughs) obviously except this one.” Recently having completed his studies at St Stephen’s Catholic College, Priestly is well renowned for his efforts in the community – along with helping others. Mayor Gilmore said: “Joshua was recognised for his leadership role at St Stephens Catholic College, his contribution to a host of community events, his participation with organisations such as Rosie’s Van and his assistance in fundraising for many charities.” The Mareeba Historical Society received the ‘Community Event of the Year’ award, off the back of unrivalled commitment from several volunteers. Similarly, organisers of the FNQ Rotary Field Days were delighted upon notification of being awarded the ‘Development of Commerce and Industry’ award. Ian Adcock was a popular selection for the ‘Environment Excellence’ award, while Celeste Petersen (Junior Sports award), Jennifer McCarthy (Senior Sports award) and Connie Martens (Coach/Administrator award) were acknowledged for excellence in their field. Additionally, Toni Rogers was recognised with the ‘Arts and Cultural award’, while Bob Madden received the ‘Community Service’ award.

THE END OF AN ERA
The growing of tobacco in the Mareeba / Dimbulah District covered a span of 75 years, from the industry’s inception in 1929 to its demise in 2004. Growing tobacco was often difficult, and sometimes heartbreaking, as the crop was constantly beset by nematodes, mould, loupers, hailstorms and sometimes barn fires. The crop required much hands-on work, often by the family, chipping, spraying, picking, curing and grading, but oh, how proud they were when their beautiful product was displayed on the sales room floors. The industry also provided wealth and stability for our community, as well as contributing two very valuable assets. The first was the influx of migrants from many countries: Italy, Yugoslavia and Germany to name several. First the menfolk farmers settled in, then brought their wives and families. Our community is all the richer for this multicultural input. The second asset is the Tinaroo Dam. The wise men of The Tobacco Board were responsible for persuading the Government to build this wonderful water repository which then, and still does, provide irrigation and water supply to this area. Visit our comprehensive and Nationally recognised display of The Tobacco Industry at The Mareeba Heritage Museum. We also need you to solve our little mystery. The photograph is of Midge Gibbs removing the last tobacco bale from the Sales Room floors.

Cook Shire’s 2016 Australia Day award winners.
COOKTOWN is a special place to visit at the best of times – but on Australia Day, its significance is even greater. Last Tuesday, the Cook Shire formally acknowledged several fine individuals who put so much into their community. The award winners on the day were as follows: Citizen of the Year – Jim Fay, Young Citizen of the Year – Shani Miller, Volunteer of the Year – Jody Andrews, Sports Administrator Award – Nardia Whitman, Sports Award – Oliver Hanson, Arts Award – Jane Dennis and Cultural Award – Sayah Scott. 2016 promises to be another exciting year for all within the Cook Shire.
Communities of Etheridge Shire come together to celebrate THE communities that make up the Etheridge Shire Council came together in Einasleigh to celebrate Australia Day. Festivities were based around the theme ‘Celebrate what’s great about Australia’ and included the official awards ceremony, plus prizes for best dressed, a throng throwing competition, a damper making derby and more. The Etheridge Shire’s Australia Day awards recipients were: Citizen of the Year – Noeline Ikin, Junior Citizen of the Year – Jake Wieland, Organisation of the Year – VISE Group, Senior Sports Medallion – Jake Bethel, Junior Sports Medallion – Abbey Martin and Mayoral Award – Gary Butler.

Australia Day awards across the region
Quality nominations at TRC Australia Day ceremony THE Tablelands Regional Council held its annual Australia Day ceremony last Tuesday afternoon at the Atherton International Club. As usual, there was no shortage of quality individuals on the Southern Tablelands who achieved highly. Award selectors would have had many a sleepless night in the build up to the day, with all nominees worthy of victory. Graeme Tobin (Millaa Millaa) was awarded ‘Citizen of the Year’ - holding off Ray Byrnes (Afghanistan Avenue of Honour), Jo Barnes (Atherton Rotary), Chano Trentin (Chano Trentin’s AllWheel Drive Centre) and Christine Doan (Atherton/Malanda Chamber of Commerce). Mr Tobin has lived in Millaa Millaa his whole life and has spent close to six decades improving the quality of his region. A passionate member of the Millaa Millaa Lions Club for 48 years, Graeme’s influence will be felt for years to come. Talented Atherton State High School student Jessica Honan was awarded ‘Young Citizen of the Year’, after a tremendous academic year in and outside the classroom. Some of Jessica’s achievements included travelling to Turkey after winning the Premier’s ANZAC Prize, along with representing Dalrymple in Queensland’s youth parliament. Cycling is continuing its rise in the region, with Tableland Cycle Sports awarded the ‘Development of Commerce and Industry’ award. Elizabeth (Betty) Attewell was recognised for her outstanding community service, while APA president Jacqui Stephens was rewarded for her tireless efforts in performing arts, picking up the ‘Senior Cultural’ award. The ‘Junior Sports’ award was tied between Stephanie Armstrong and Kristen Wadley. Stephanie, an accomplished

swimmer and cricketer, enjoyed another successful year. Kristen continues to shine in the sport of sailing, where she recently returned from a successful outing at the national championships. Jan Day was awarded the ‘Senior Sports’ award, a fitting recognition considering all the many hours she puts in to her local (Malanda) pony club. The ‘100 dawns’ ANZAC Day service in Herberton received the ‘Community Event of the Year’. In a statement, TRC Mayor Rosa Lee Long said: “The event showcased 38 well deserving nominees for eight Australia Day Awards with over 400 people attending the ceremony. “Judging was difficult with extremely hard working, selfless, community-minded locals nominated, with all nominees deserving of an accolade.”

Young, fit, healthy, and in the prime of her life after getting married and becoming a mother – the last thing Charlene Ericson imagined was to be diagnosed with cancer. But the unimaginable did happen in late2014, when after nearly a year of feeling unwell, Charlene was diagnosed with stage 3C ovarian cancer; turning her world upside down. Now, Charlene has published a book on her experience in the hope to raise awareness about the ‘silent killer’, ovarian cancer. ‘Battle Scars’ is Charlene’s personal story – written straight from the heart of the loving wife and mother and her battle with cancer. “You hear of people getting bad news, but you never think that it could be you one day,” said Charlene. “But I did get the bad news and my book tells the good, the bad and the ugly truths that create an emotional storm when cancer strikes.” It was only after 12 months of marriage and having twins girls that the symptoms started to surface. Charlene and her husband Shaun had just moved to Darwin from Queensland; and feeling unwell, she had been in and out of the doctors complaining of abdominal bloating, abdominal pains, back pain and weight gain. “I was told a number of times that I was perfectly fine and was just experiencing normal women problems after giving birth to children,” she said. But it was when things got worse that Charlene decided it was time to go the emergency department. “I knew something was terribly wrong,” she added. “At first they said everything was fine and to go home, but I refused; and it was only after the doctors examined my abdomen with an ultrasound that they found several tumours wrapped around several organs in my abdomen, which later led to the ovarian cancer diagnosis.” Initially given a bleak diagnosis and uncertain if she would make her 32nd birthday, Charlene promised her family that she would fight with everything she’s got. “I had too much to live for – my husband, my girls, my family – I was not going to let cancer beat me,” she said. “How you handle cancer is up to you and being positive is very impor-

tant and this is what got me through the hardest days.” Unfortunately Charlene’s story is far too common, with 1,400 women diagnosed with ovarian cancer in Australia each year and two thirds not surviving due to late diagnoses. “I’m on a mission to create awareness through sharing my experience and encouraging women to listen to their instincts, to look for the warning signs and symptoms and for doctors to listen to their patients. “We know our bodies and we know when something is not right – Cancer is not biased and it can affect anyone at anytime,” said Charlene. ‘Battle Scars’ launches this month and it’s a book that will make you laugh and cry, but most importantly you will have some understanding of the horrible disease. Charlene is coming back to where it all began – her home town of Mareeba to officially launch her book on February 20. “Mareeba is always home, the place where my friends and family are and a place I can always come back to,” she said. “The Mareeba community and spirit is something you can’t beat and I feel that I owe it to the people who supported me through my growing up and my cancer journey to have the launch at my home town. “I feel as though I have a second chance, to be a better version of myself and I want to help others. Especially women who have to go through what I have been through and hopefully ‘Battle Scars’ will help me do this. “I’ve also learnt not to sweat the small stuff and to appreciate the things I already have,” As for the future Charlene has no concrete plans and is just taking each day as it comes. “I’m still working in radio advertising, which I love, and enjoying life in Darwin with my amazing husband and soon to be soon to be 4-year-old twins girls – life has never been better,” she said. Charlene is now in remission and still undergoing treatment for another two months with a maintenance drug that hopefully keeps the cancer away. The official launch of ‘Battle Scars’ will be held at the Mareeba RSL on Saturday, February 20, from 12noon to 2pm and everyone is welcome. February is Ovarian Cancer awareness month and $2 from every book sold will go to Ovarian Cancer Australia. ‘Battles Scars’ can be purchased on line at www.battlescars.biz and copies will be available at the launch.
World Cancer Day – local action inspires global change Community members are invited to attend a free forum at Cancer Council’s Cairns office to mark World Cancer Day on Thursday, February 4. Cancer Council’s World Cancer Day community forum will showcase the comprehensive range of support services available to locals affected by cancer, providing the community with an opportunity to talk to specialised Support Coordinators and Cancer Counsellors. The forum, with the theme – We Can. I Can – will run from 12pm to 4.30pm at Cancer Council Queensland’s office, located at 169 Aumuller St, Bungalow. World Cancer Day, held annually on February 4, is a global initiative inviting people from across the world to unite in the fight against cancer. The day aims to prevent cancer deaths by raising awareness and education, encouraging joint community and government action. Cancer Council Queensland spokesperson Katie Clift said the session provided a great opportunity for locals to learn more about the work of
CCQ. “Meet our Community Support coordinators and join us for an information session on the emotional, physical, practical, and social challenges of a cancer diagnosis,” she said. “We have a wide range of programs available for regional and local cancer patients to help ease the burden of cancer and improve fitness and wellbeing.” Ms Clift said World Cancer Day encouraged Queensland communities to take a positive and proactive approach in the fight against cancer. “The theme for World Cancer Day 2015 is ‘We Can. I Can’ – demonstrating that we all have a role to play in cancer control,” Ms Clift said. “Our aim is to help raise awareness of the actions we can take as a community and as individuals to reduce the burden of cancer on a global scale.” More information about Cancer Council Queensland is available via 13 11 20 or cancerqld.org.au.

entertainment New movies hit the big screen
Another big time talked about film opens at The Rising Sun Cinema in Mareeba this week. Quentin Tarantino's THE HATEFUL EIGHT, is cinema at it's dramatic best with powerful performances from Samuel L. Jackson, Kurt Russell and the unbelievable Tarantino touch. The second new film on screen this week is the riotous comedy SISTERS, with the incredible comedy talents of Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. Continuing for a second great week is THE REVENANT – an incredible drama based on a true story. Leonardo DiCaprio gives an astounding performance in the lead role There's one last chance to catch the action fantasy GOOSEBUMPS and the family drama JOY today, Wednesday. February 3.
THE HATEFUL EIGHT
A few years after the Civil War, a stagecoach hurtles through the wintry Wyoming landscape. The passengers, bounty hunter John Ruth (Kurt Russell) and his fugitive Daisy Domergue (Jennifer Jason Leigh), race towards the town of Red Rock where Ruth, known in these parts as "The Hangman," will bring Domergue to justice. Along the road, they encounter two strangers: Major Marquis Warren (Samuel L. Jackson), a black former union soldier turned infamous bounty hunter, and Chris Mannix (Walton Goggins), a southern renegade who claims to be the town's new Sheriff. In the blizzard, Ruth, Domergue, Warren and Mannix seek refuge at Minnie's Haberdashery, a stagecoach stopover on a mountain pass. When they arrive at Minnie's, they are greeted not by the proprietor but by four unfamiliar faces. Bob (Demi‡n Bichir), who's taking care of the place while Minnie is visiting her mother. He's sharing the place with Oswaldo Mobray (Tim Roth), who claims to be the hangman of Red Rock; cow-puncher Joe Gage (Michael Madsen), and Confederate General Sanford Smithers (Bruce Dern). As the storm overtakes the mountainside stopover, our eight travellers realise they may not make it to Red Rock after all.
SISTERS
Two sisters decide to throw one last house party before their par-
ents sell their family home. Review by Louise Keller: There's no shortage of comedic talent on screen, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are two formidable talents and they work the material (by 30 Rock and Saturday Night Live writer Paula Pell) as well as anyone could. It's certainly entertaining to watch these attractive, smart women at work. I The film starts well with an attention grabbing Skype scene in which James Brolin and Diane Wiest (as the sisters' parents Bucky and Deana) drop the bombshell to their responsible, dogooder daughter Maura (Poehler), that they are going to sell the family home. This is the set-up and it is up to Maura to tell her irresponsible sister Kate (Fey) the news. It only takes one scene with Kate for us to see first hand that she has no idea about keeping a job, a home, or a relationship with her smart teenage daughter Haley (Madison Davenport). But then, it's as though Pell forgets Maura and Kate's personalities, as they head home to Orlando, where both act like airheads for one last hurrah. The fact that the house has already been vacated and sold is the springboard for the two girls extending an invitation to all their old friends for one last party, where tequila shots, drugs, blue paint and an overload of dish washing detergent all play a part. Highly memorable is the scene in which a ballerina music box accidentally finds its way into an unmentionable orifice of Maura's new boyfriend James (Ike Barinholtz) during an intimate moment.

1. Preheat oven to 220°C and line a baking sheet with parchment paper and liberally grease it with olive oil. Set aside. 2. In a food processor rice the cauliflower florets and transfer cauliflower rice to a microwave-safe dish and microwave on high for 8 minutes. 3. Place the cauliflower rice in a tea towel and twist it to squeeze as much moisture as you can. The cauliflower rice needs to be dry. 4. Transfer the cauliflower rice to a mixing bowl, add egg, mozzarella, oregano, salt and pepper and mix well. 5. Spread cauliflower mixture onto the lined baking sheet and form into a large rectangle and bake for exactly 10 minutes. 6. Remove from the oven and spread tomato sauce over most of the dough, leaving a 2-inch border on one side. Spread half of the mozzarella, then the meat, then the remaining cheese. With a large spatula lift the longer sides of the crust and roll into stromboli shape. Flip them seam down and tuck/fold the shorter side to close the stromboli.Cut slats in the top, and sprinkle with some grated Parmesan cheese and oregano and bake for an additional 12 minutes. ENJOY!

Under the guidance of Josh Stowers, the senior squad have a balanced focus of commitment to a positive club culture, along with dedication to fitness and skill. Last Thursday evening saw the players complete a series of intense shuttle runs, before breaking into productive agility ball work. Seasoned campaigners are well aware that the miles clocked in February, almost always come in handy come finals time. With a delicate blend of new recruits and retained experience, 2016 will hopefully be a year of sustained success at Davies Park. The Gladiators have also confirmed two pre season trial matches – which will be held in mid-March - against the Mossman/Port Douglas Sharks and Atherton Roosters.
Learn the most powerful art of self-defence
Major coup for Springmount Raceway SPRINGMOUNT Raceway has decided to go with the exciting new 400 Thunder Drag Racing Series and IHRA sanctioning, due to various benefits which include reduced costs to competitors and innovative changes which we hope will improve the sport for all involved. They have also secured the opening round of the
2016/17 400 Thunder Sportsman Series, kicking off the second 400 Thunder season in style in the tropics. 400 Thunder CEO Maurice Allen said the announcement of a fourth world-class quarter mile track running under IHRA sanctioning is demonstration of the sanctioning body and series’ commitment to providing for racers all over Australia.

RHEE Tae Kwon Do is the most powerful art of self-defence. It involves dynamic techniques and unarmed combat for self-defence purposes, combining the skilled application of powerful kicks and blocks. Rhee Tae Kwon Do has been established in Mareeba and the Tablelands for 40 years, seeing many families and friends train together; disciplining the body and mind, while learning the art of self-defence. Other benefits gained include improved coordination, concentration and fitness. All fitness levels are encouraged to come along. Rhee Tae Kwon Do is an activity the whole family can do together and it offers special packages for families.

Sarrah Myrteza (back centre) celebrates with her Cairns Dolphins teammates at the recent basketball state championships.
Myrteza selected in state U/18’s By Justin Fris
HUMBLE Mareeba-based basketball player Sarrah Myrteza has been selected in the female Queensland U/18’s basketball team. A player who lets her actions on the talk do the talking, Myrteza performed at a high level for the Cairns Dolphins at the recent state championships, which sealed her selection.
She has also been on the radar of the Townsville Fire (who play in the Women’s National Basketball League), who signed her to their academy over the school holidays. The Year 11 Mareeba State High School student has a busy year ahead, however with loyal family and friends supporting her in Mareeba, the possibilities appear endless.

FNQ Football has officially released a draft fixture list for the 2016 FNQ Premier League season – and it makes for interesting viewing. For the Mareeba United Football Club, the opening month will provide an interesting induction for Alex Srhoj’s men. The Bulls will begin the season away to Leichhardt on Saturday April 2; and in round three, have a grand final rematch against Stratford at Nick Brko Field. Sandwiched in between these fixtures is a home game against the Marlin Coast Rangers. As it stands, the Bulls will also have a three match road trip in August, facing Stratford, Leichhardt and
Innisfail in quick succession. Their season will conclude with two consecutive home matches against Edge Hill Utd and the Southside Comets. At junior level, much is being done to offer one of the most complete football experiences in the Far North. MUFC club officials are working hard in facilitating coach education opportunities for all coaches on their books, along with hosting memorable events. One of these events is the annual junior carnival, which will be held on May 22 at Borzi Park. For more information regarding upcoming sign on and events, please contact Tamara Srhoj (MUFC Club President) on 0438 234 306.

EXPRESS sPORT Sprint success for Malanda Swimming Club THE Malanda Swimming Club will have four representatives at the upcoming state sprint championships in Brisbane. In a tremendous result for the club, youngsters Bailey Wakeford (14), Gemma Ivory (14), Bryce Jones (14) and Louis Karan (14) have been busy training over the school holidays. Personal sacrifice can pose the odd challenge at times for some, however it is clear that these teens are committed to improving their skills. Local Dragons Swim Academy coaches Anita Skews and Leonie Gageler have worked hard to develop Malanda-based swimmers at the pool in recent years, with the dividends clearly paying off.

Heat ‘keep it moving’ during pre season By Justin Fris
WHILE many young adults across FNQ were tucking in to a BBQ or cold beer on Australia Day, there were several young footballers at Endeavour Park committed to perfecting their craft. Temptation of a public holiday would prove to be a stumbling block for some footballers, however new FNQ Heat FC coach Tim Campbell appears to have a dedicated squad at his disposal. “I think the squad were pretty glad to get back into training again,” he said. “They’d had a real disappointing end to the year – with getting so close in the FFA Cup – I think they wanted the year to go on and on. “Of course, with the change of board and change of manager, I think they just wanted to get in; and I think they were happy to see that when I came in, I’m not that different a coach to Martin (Docherty). “We both enjoy the same things – playing out from the back and keeping the ball. So, I think the squad was happy that we weren’t going to be throwing everything out and starting again.” Campbell – a proven coaching tactician from the UK – has tremendous presence on the training track, offering clear and concise instructions to the players. Individual feedback to the players is delivered in a direct, yet constructive manner. Along with this, footballbased theory is then translated into match simulation, which is always eagerly anticipated by all. Football fundamentals were gradually ticked off throughout the session, with Campbell urging his men to ‘keep it moving’ throughout each drill. “If you want to play a good brand of attacking foot-
ball, you’ve got to keep the ball moving,” he said. “Look, I know it’s been said by many of the Heat coaches before, but teams don’t like coming up here and playing in the humidity. “So, if we can keep them moving, it’s to our advantage.” Heat fans who love a good goalmouth scramble will take heart from the fact that Campbell is keen to adopt an attacking yet disciplined shape this season. “I definitely like to get forward,” he said. “We will try and play in the other team’s half as much as we can, but we’ll try and do it under control. “I’m a great believer of getting the ball in the opposition’s box - but doing it in a manner where you give yourself the best opportunity to retain possession and make the most of it. “So, we won’t be kicking long; it’ll be building it up, but getting it in quick and keeping it moving.” After commencing their pre season against the Northern Fury (in Townsville) last Saturday, the Heat will play several friendlies against local FNQ Premier League sides. Results aside, these matches are essential for the coaching staff, as the ground work for squad and tactic fundamentals are sewn for the rigorous season ahead. “It’s all about establishing the things we’ve been working on,” Campbell said. “Keeping the ball moving and getting into positions where we can make the most of getting the ball in the box.” Locally, the Heat had four former MUFC players on the track, with all giving a good account of themselves on the night.
