YUNGABURRA Resident John Pollock AM ended 2019 on a high by picking up his second major award for the year, the latest being a Gatton Campus Distinguished Past Student Award.

The awards ceremony took place last month at the University of Queensland Gatton campus and is given to past students who have gone onto excel in their chosen fields and careers.

John said he was extremely proud to win the award.

“Seeing as I’m an old Gatton graduate and it’s been 55 years since I graduated, I’m as proud as punch to win the award and join some of the illustrious company who have won this award before me” John graduated from the

Queensland Agricultural College in 1964, with a Diploma of Agriculture, he then went onto obtain a Bachelor of Agricultural Science (BAgSc) and Master of Agricultural Science (MAgSc).

He then worked across a range of Queensland public service Departments including: The Department of Primary Industries, Lands, Cabinet, Office of the Premier, Economic Development and Trade Development.

John was chairman of the Sugar Research Australia research funding panel from 2015-2018 and the Murray Darling Basin Commission deputy commissioner from 2000-2005.

“I am an old Mossman boy. I grew up on a cane farm, studied

agriculture at uni and worked in agriculture as a researcher and in the policy arena,” he said.

Looking back at his illustrious career in Queensland government John said the highlight of his working life was “being the inaugural director of Queensland Fisheries in 1996.”

His other significant award was presented on Australia Day 2019, when he was appointed as a Member of the Order of Australia “For significant service to primary industry in Queensland through a range of roles.”

John retired to Yungaburra in 2005 and now spends his time volunteering with Barron catchment care and the Yungaburra association.

Hundreds of kilometres of dirt, sweat and fun – all in the name of charity A Dimbulah State School student completed a hundred kilometre bike ride through the Cairns2Karumba bike ride. The 780km bike ride raises money for the “Giving bush kids a fair go” which supports rural schools and other services across Queensland.

Amaya Goldsworthy, a recent grade 6 graduate of Dimbulah State School participated in the charity event and has written a short story about her experiences and reasons to enter into the event...

“YOU’RE riding your bike from Cairns to where?”

This was the question asked by many of my school friends and class mates.

My name is Amaya Goldsworthy. I am a 12 year old student at Dimbulah P-10 State

School and have just graduated from primary school. Recently, Dimbulah State School were lucky recipients of a Cairns to Karumba (C2K) Charity Bike RideGrant - “Giving bush kids a fair go” which enabled my Year 6 class to spend a day out on the Great Barrier Reef exploring Green Island and enjoying its many wonders which is something rural children, like myself, rarely get the opportunity to do.

Earlier this year I was extremely fortunate to ride C2K “Dirty Boys & Girls” and I have to say, it could only be described as a life changing experience. From the moment the “DIRTY, DIRTY, DIRTY – Oi, Oi, Oi” chant from our iconic, legendary pack leader, Llew Davies, went up at the starting line in Cairns, to the moment we unclipped after crossing the finish line in Karumba, it was nothing short of a fun-filled, action packed, 7-day adventure.

The reason why I chose to take on the challenge of C2K was not only do I come from a family who enjoys cycling and the great outdoors but in

essence the C2K charity is such a worthy cause. Meeting some of the beneficiaries of the C2K on outback remote properties gave me a new perspective on just how geographically isolated children the same age as myself can be, and regardless of distance we shouldn’t be disadvantaged especially when it comes to our education.

The C2K bike ride gave me a new appreciation of the harsh beauty of the Savannah country and the great people who live in these remote areas.

Their stories of country life are amazing! They were so accommodating and put on the best smokos and lunches.

My fellow ‘Dirty Boys & Girls’ were also an amazing, diverse bunch of people from all over Australia and were so supportive giving me lots of kind words of encouragement to hang in there and keep going.

The long lasting friendships that were forged over this time has been extremely humbling and ones I will certainly treasure.

Mareeba secures new country music festival WITH the introduction of the region’s first large scale country music festival, could Mareeba become the new country music capital of Australia?

The new ‘Savannah In The Round’ three day country music festival will be hosted at the Kerribee Park Rodeo grounds which will be transformed over the October long weekend into a festival site capable of holding thousands of visitors from across Australia.

Since the festival was announced in late December, excitement has been building across the Far North and the man behind the event couldn’t be happier.

After pitching the idea to Sound Australia CEO James Dein, Mareeba Shire Councillor and Mayoral Candidate Nipper Brown has gathered support and the idea has ‘snowballed’ from there.

“I approached Sound Australia after the CMC Rocks festival at Willowbank in March,” he said.

“I looked around at the 21,000 people there and thought, why can’t we have this sort of event at Mareeba,” “I get nothing out of this event besides seeing the boost and the money it generates for the region.”

With overwhelming support from local businesses the weekend is set to be a big one with other activities being offered and a focus on First Nations storytelling, artists, music and dance.

“Leading into the event we are looking at promoting the festival with some small, local performances around the town,” Mr Brown said.

“It helps create the atmosphere and builds excitement for the big event on the long weekend.

“With so many well-known country music names preforming so close to home it’s a huge chance for locals to experience some of the best in their back-

Mr Brown expressed a huge thank you to local business and organisations who donated to give the festival a running start.

To help get the event underway, Mareeba Rotary donated $5000, The Gateway Hotel $2500, Hungry Possum Catering $5000, Mareeba Rodeo $2500, Mareeba Shire Council $5000 and Bendigo Community Bank donating the largest amount of $20,000 which assisted in the feasibility study.

Gilbert Teitzel, chairman of Mareeba and Dimbulah Bendigo Community Bank said their large donation was to support local events and garner interest in future events.

“The Community Bank is very interested in progressing

business and interest in the local community,” he said.

“If we can support ideas and functions that in turn support the local community we will do just that.”

Cr Brown wants the whole community to be involved with the event and is looking for volunteers for the event.

“We want the community to be involved with this event and anyone interested in helping over the three days can contact me in February/March on 0429 931 061.”

THIS week the Mount Carbine Tungsten mine on the Mulligan Highway started its first treatment in over 4 years.

Russell Krause Executive Chairman of Specialty Metals International told The Express that “after months of hard work and over 10 million dollars of investment the mine would officially reopen at 7am on January 6.”

According to a statement issued to the Australian stock exchange “The plant will commence commercial operation, on a single day shift basis on the 6th of January and as operational efficiencies are improved and people are trained the number of shifts will gradually be increased until the plant is operating at full capacity on a 24/7 basis.”

Mr Krause said “The first delivery of equipment for the restart arrived in September and interviews for local tradespeople started in November. By the time we go into full production, we will have 30-40 full-time staff working here.”

“The vast majority of our staff are locals, this is not a fly in fly out operation. We have decided to make pro-

viding locals with jobs a priority.”

The reopening of the mine will start by retreating low-grade material stockpiled at the site before it commences hard rock mining, MR Krause says that in the future “there are plans to run the mine 24 hours a day.”

According to Mr Karuse, both Federal and State governments were taking an active interest in the reopened Tungsten mine as “Tungsten is listed as a critical mineral and this will be the first dedicated Tungsten mine back in production in Australia in a long time.”

Specialty Metals International entered into a joint venture with Cronimet Asia for the development of the Tungsten mine at Mount Carbine. In July 2019 the joint venture acquired 100% of Mt Carbine Quarries Pty Ltd, the entity that previously owned and operated the Mt Carbine quarry.

Mr Kauase said, “We look forward to working closely with the Cronimet team in bringing the Mt Carbine Tailings Retreatment and Stockpile Projects back into production.”

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk visited the Tablelands to help officially open the Mount Emerald Wind Farm, a project which is scheduled to bring power to thousands of households in the region and provide more than 200 jobs.

Come on what’s so difficult, when its burnt it won’t burn again for several years, BUT, if you leave the bush to build up dead material for years and years as we do now, it won’t matter if its Global Warming or Climate Change or any other fancy name... it will burn.

Then there is the practice of setting Australian Bottle Brush, Tea Tree, Grevillia, flowering Gums and many more fire prone shrubs and trees in the garden when we should be setting plants that don’t burn but give their lives to stop the fire, many of these are Australian Rainforest Species and not foreign plants.

Good old common sense like not building next to Eucalypt Forest, clearing all around your home, joining the volunteer fire brigade and learning what to do as it is part of your ‘life insurance’ in Australia.

It should be mandatory in the bush that everyone should be educated in what to do at times of fire... yes it is really lovely, very romantic and beautiful in our bush, until it’s bright red with terrifying flames and acrid smoke with your precious home going up in smoke.

Perhaps more underground homes would be a good idea cobber.

MAYOR Tom Gilmore’s published response (Letters to Editor 18/12/2019) to the rejection of the Kur-World project displays a disconnect with his constituents in Kuranda and showcases a simple ideology that has had its day.

He completely sidesteps the fact that the community responded strongly and loudly against Kur-World with the largest public response to a Coordinated Project in Queensland history. He should be proud of the fact that he represents such a strong and united community.

Instead the Mayor whimpers that the Kuranda Range Road is the roadblock to economic development for Mareeba and Cape York.

If the Mayor was serious about ‘opening up’ Mareeba and Cape York for economic growth he would be firstly advocating for the widening of the Kennedy Highway bridges such as Barron River, Clohesy, Emerald and Davies Creek to four lanes. There is no use having a four-lane superhighway up the Kuranda Range only to be bottlenecked at all the bridges.

Secondly, for real economic growth he should bang the drum for an extended rail line from Cairns and Townsville to the Cape via Mareeba having an intermodal transport hub to facilitate freight movements.

I BELIEVE we should look at what is happening this year with the bush fires around Australia, dissect it with honest scrutiny and make decisions that will last into the future in the best way possible.

Is what we are seeing Global Warming or bad management in the forests, should it have been cold burnt at the right time because from what I have seen down south everyone leaves it too late when the weather is hot and then it’s too late to burn and when it does it is Catastrophic.

Driving through NSW the build up of branches and rubbish in the bottom of the forests is often far too great, a fire storm ready to explode... where is the common sense, you know what will undoubtedly happen and it does.

What makes it worse is the further south you go the more Eucalyptus oil is in the gum trees, check it out if you like because it’s true... we have lived in South Australia and Far north Queensland, I was a fire warden and took great interest in such things.

TABLELANDS Police were disappointed with the behaviour of a few tablelands residents on local roads after seven people were charged with drug driving offences on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day and a further nine people were charged with drink driving offences over the same period.

It’s a alleged a 54-year-old Kuranda woman was intercepted on Thooree Street, Kuranda at about 9pm on New Year’s Eve

where she returned a reading of 0.135 per cent BAC. She is expected to appear in the Mareeba Magistrates Court on January 20, charged with drink driving.

Tablelands Patrol Inspector Russell Rhodes told The Express that “As a result of Queensland police making road safety a priority over the holidays there was a small increase in offending drivers. One of the reasons for this was the increase in drink and

drug driving tests that were conducted by Tablelands Police.”

Police also intercepted a 25-year-old Mareeba man riding a motorbike on New Year’s morning at about 1.50am, on James Street Mareeba.

It will be alleged that he returned a reading of 0.108 per cent BAC A 39-year-old Doomadgee man was intercepted on Byrnes Street at about 4am on Wednesday morning and it will be alleged that he returned a reading of 0.177 per cent BAC..

And a 50-year-old Mareeba man was intercepted on Byrnes Street at about 6am on Wednesday morning and it will be alleged that he returned a reading of 0.197 per cent BAC. Also a 42-year-old Chillagoe

woman is expected to appear in the Mareeba Magistrates Court on January 20, charged with drink driving and unlicenced driving after she was intercepted at 7.45am on Wednesday morning on Frew Street, Chillagoe.

It will be alleged that she returned a reading of 0.126 per cent BAC. Tablelands Patrol Inspector Russell Rhodes also added that “It was one of the better weeks in regards to serious crime throughout the entire year, but the statistics for drug and drink driving arrests were still disappointing” “All community members are encouraged to continue to put yours and other road user’s safety first when getting behind the wheel.”

2019 was Australia's hottest and driest year on record IT’S official Australia experienced its hottest and driest year ever in 2019, according to official data released by the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM).

The annual average temperature was 23.32C - which was 1.52C above the long-term average between 1961-1990.

Australia is also in the midst of one of the worst droughts on record, with new figures showing the average rainfall for last year was at its lowest ever - at just 277.63 millimetres.

The daytime temperature also hit record highs with 2019 seeing an average maximum of 30.69C - higher than the previous record in 2013 of 30.19C. Several other records were smashed in Australia last year, including the record for the country’s hottest day ever, which was broken twice in De-

cember.

On December 18 the average maximum temperature in Australia rose to 41.9C, just one day after a record of 40.9C was achieved.

Individual states around the country also saw some of their hottest days within the last year.

In NSW, temperatures reached 1.95C above the longterm average – 0.27C higher

Prior to that, Australia’s hottest day was recorded on January 7, 2013 when temperatures reached 40.3 degrees

than the previous record set in 2018.

Western Australia also beat its previous heat record set in

2013 by 0.58C, with temperatures 1.67C higher than average.

The data which is due to be released in a full report next week indicated that the country will expect to see these dry and hot temperatures carry on into the new year.

High temperatures have been blamed for a horror bushfire season which has resulted in 17 deaths and destroyed more than 1,400 homes.

More than 100 fires were still burning in New South Wales and Victoria which has seen more than 100,000 hectares destroyed.

BOM is not expected to provide an official statement until it releases its annual climate statement on January 9.

Police call for calm TWO teenagers have been charged with murder and additional police resources deployed to Aurukun amidst community unrest following the death of a 37-year-old local man.

Last Wednesday detectives charged a 17-year-old boy and an 18-year-old man with murder, with the man appearing in the Cairns Magistrates Court last week. Police allege that an altercation occurred between the pair and the 37-year-old man on New Year’s Day during which time the man sustained a stab wound to the abdomen. He was then transported to the Aurukun medical clinic and was pronounced dead a short time later.

According to police, a large group of people then took to the streets arming themselves with makeshift weapons once news spread of the man’s death. The group then dispersed before reforming and breaking into houses and vehicles, damaging property and in some instances starting fires, while searching for the two teens.

Additional police resources were then deployed to Aurukun overnight from Weipa, Coen and Cairns with a senior officer from Cairns also sent to the township.

Superintendent Geoff Sheldon, Assistant District Officer, Far North District said police are continuing to monitor the situation and are appealing for calm.

“We understand that the

sudden and tragic death of a loved one causes immense grief and at times anger, and I extend my condolences to the family and friends of the deceased. “Can I also ask for calm and restraint at this difficult time.

“The level of threats and property destruction that we saw yesterday and overnight in Aurukun is unacceptable and will not be tolerated. Police have taken into custody and charged two teenagers with murder. Their families and associates should not have to live in fear of reprisals.”

“The safety of everyone in the community is our priority and we will do everything to support the community during this time.”

Police have launched a major investigation into both the homicide and the unrest and associated offences such as arson and wilful destruction.

Police Media added “Police will conduct further assessments of the damage associated with the unrest and at this stage believe that six dwellings were set on fire, sustaining varying degrees of damage including some being destroyed. Two other dwellings sustained fire damage to their outside, as well as several cars that were damaged or set alight.”

Police are asking for anyone with information on the unrest or the murder to contact Policelink on 131 444.

Slow Roasted Greek Lemon Potatoes

1. Preheat oven to 170ºC and cut the potatoes into chunks.

2. Pour the olive oil, lemon juice, chicken stock, lemon zest, whole garlic cloves, oregano and salt into a roasting tin and mix well to combine.

3. Add the potatoes into the mixture and mix gently.

4. Cover the roasting tin with foil and roast the potatoes for 70 minutes then remove from the oven, remove the foil and gently turn them.

5. Return to the oven uncovered for a further 10 minutes.

6. The potatoes should be soft and lightly golden and most of the liquid will have evaporated.

EXPRESS SPORT PORT Rain washes out first day of new year match SATURDAY’S rain affected first day of the final round of the two-day Cricket Far North first grade season saw only five overs bowled by Atherton in their match with Barron River.

Barron River were 1-9 before rain washed out the day’s play with bowler Paul Nasser taking the early wicket.

Atherton lead the CFN points table on 44.92 followed by Barron River 32.46, Norths 31.14, Rovers 30.33, Mulgrave 24.68, Cassowary Coast 22.61.

The two day final will be played on January 18-19 and Atherton are widely considered untouchable on top of the table.

Atherton play day two of their match with Barron River this Saturday at Crathern Park.

Rep honours for cricket trio

MAREEBA United Football Club is gearing up for a big 2020 and over the Christmas break works began on upgrading fields at the grounds.

Club volunteers commenced works on field three with construction set to be completed by the end of February.

The ground was ripped up and levelled out in mid-December 2019 to allow for a more safe and reliable junior field to be constructed.

140 tonnes of sand was de-

livered to be used for top dressing for the new field.

In addition, a new pop up sprinkler system has been installed to effectively cultivate the new field which will be seeded with Couch seed grass.

Field two will also undergo works which include being extended by 10 meters and also other earth works and extension of the existing irrigation on the field.
