MAREEBA State High School students were given a special chance to engage with young adult writer Will Kostakis last week.

Mr Kostakis attended a special program in two parts of the day with one session in the morn-

ing and another in the afternoon.

“I got my first book deal while I was 17, I was still in high school,” he said.

“My first book came out when I was 19.

“And I’ve been touring schools ever since.”

Taking the lead MAREEBA Shire Council has reduced its dog registration fee for de-sexed dogs to just $20 to encourage residents to be responsible pet owners.

Mayor Tom Gilmore said it is known that de-sexed animals are less likely to be aggressive and wander at large and Council is offering a financial incentive to get their dogs de-sexed.

“There has been a positive increase in the number of dog registrations which shows residents are being proactive and doing the right thing,” Cr Gilmore said.

“Owning a dog comes with the responsibility of ensuring

“Resounding success” MAREEBA was abuzz with excitement last week as the biennial Rotary FNQ Field Days was held at the Mareeba Rodeo Grounds.

More than 19,000 visitors attended the event over the three days to see what the 600 stalls and 500 exhibitors had to offer, as everything relating to agriculture and rural living was on display.

Minister for Agricultural Industry Development and Fisheries Mark Furner officially opened the event on Wednesday, setting up a strong first day for the largest field days in northern Australia.

Rotary FNQ Field Days Chair Ida Portella described this year’s event as a “resounding success”.

“When speaking with the exhibitors, they provided great feedback and have spoken about how much they love coming here and how it’s one of the best events on the calendar,” she said.

“So that in itself proves that it’s been a very successful event, and for us if the exhibitors are happy, we’re happy.”

In addition, Ms Portella noted the great response from the visitors who attended the 2019 Rotary FNQ Field Days.

“I’ve been talking to visitors from all over the country, and not only did they applaud the variety of displays that were available, they were very pleased with the expansion of our site,” she said.

“There’s been a lot of positiv-

ity surrounding our expansion; I think you’ve always got to be looking to take opportunities to improve your event and I feel the new and improved areas were a welcome addition.

“So now it’s about ensuring future growth and hopefully 2021’s Field Days will be even better.

“Also, it was fantastic that the

weather held out, we were a little worried about the rain but thankfully we went through the entire three days without a hitch.”

The three core themes of this year’s Field Days were farm safety, mental health and innovation, and Ms Portella was ecstatic with the delivery of those three themes across the three days.

“It was particularly great to

have former rugby league legend Shane Webcke as the special guest this year, he had a very powerful message on farm safety and you could tell it hit home with those who were listening,” she said.

“He had a packed crowd when he spoke and raised some really important issues regarding farm safety at what is a very per-

in the region who do such crucial work with mental health and wellbeing in general.”

Roads of Remembrance

A GIANT body of work has been completed on Tableland Regional Council’s Roads of Remembrance Project.

A $20,364 Commonwealth Government Armistice Centenary Grant helped to research and identify roads in our region that are named after people, places or events associated with World War I. “It was great to see the community help us identify these important Tablelands landmarks,” said Mayor Joe Paronella.

“The Eacham and Tolga Historical Societies also sup-

plied and verified information.

“Our records did not go back far enough to confirm the history of road names so we used family records, National Archives, military records and other sources and to identify 13 roads in the region.

“In late April these were recognised with new street signs.

“Look for these signs as you travel across the region — they are easily identified by the Australian Defence Force Rising Sun emblem.

“We’ve published the background information on these roads on our website so you can

follow the historical paths these roads took.

“This important project acknowledges a significant military conflict in our history and those from our region who played their part.

“It will ensure that we do not forget,” said Mayor Paronella.

Voice of our youth YEAR 9 St Stephens’s Catholic College student Alannah Falvo recently competed in the Rostrum Voice of Youth competition.

Alannah took park in the junior public speaking competition held at St Augustine’s Col-

lege in Cairns winning the local comp on her first time.

Alannah had to prepare two speeches; one beforehand and another impromptu speech.

Alannah said that “it was a lot of fun”.

“It was a really good experi-

ence to meet other people and listen to their speeches.

“It was inspirational.”

After winning the local competition Alannah will now head to Brisbane on July 6 to compete against other public speakers from across the state.

BACKING NULLINGA: LNP State Shadow Minister for Agriculture Tony Perrett with MSF Sugar’s Hywel Cook.

AGRICULTURAL economic prosperity will flow on the Atherton Tablelands and Far North Queensland with the LNP’s plan to build Nullinga Dam. Speaking at the MSF Sugar Tableland Mill, LNP Shadow Minister for Agriculture Tony Perrett recommitted that a Deb Frecklington LNP Government would get the Nullinga Dam project shovel ready, so it could access federal water infrastructure funding.

Mr Perrett said Far North Queensland’s water security is critical to the region’s prosperity and future economic opportunities.

“It’s essential that Cairns and the Atherton Tablelands have reliable water and it’s time we got

this project going,” Mr Perrett said.

“The proposed Nullinga Dam site in the Atherton Tablelands would serve growing urban demand in Cairns and support local agriculture.

“We already know how important agriculture is to the Tablelands.

“By making even more water available, the region will finally be able to unlock its production potential and increase opportunities throughout the agricultural supply chain.

Mr Perrett said more water means more fruit, vegetables, sugar cane and jobs.

“The LNP backs this dam because water means jobs – especially in agricultural areas like

the Tablelands," he said.

“Annastacia Palaszczuk doesn’t have a plan to create jobs, and Queensland is suffering as a result, with one of the worst unemployment rates in the country.

“You don’t have to explain to Tablelanders about the economic impacts dams can have on regions.

“Just look at the impact the Tinaroo Dam had on the prosperity of the region in the 1960s.”

LNP Shadow Minister for Natural Resources Dale Last said if elected in October 2020, an LNP Government would contribute $10 million to the project and develop an Environmental Impact Statement for the site identified on the Walsh River, west of Atherton.

“Queensland hasn’t built a dam in the regions for 14 years,” he said.

“That’s why we have committed to setting up the Queensland Dam Company to build new dams like Nullinga.

“Annastacia Palaszczuk is anti-dams, anti-regions and antijobs.”

Mr Last said the Nullinga Dam will kick-start the regional economy, create new jobs and provide water security for generations to come.

“The LNP is listening to locals and farmers are telling us they need water security to grow their businesses,” he said.

“While Labor is destroying jobs in North Queensland, the LNP has a plan to create them.”

Local farmer Chris Maisel was the overall winner of the 2019 Tractor Pull competition.

THE afternoon of day two at the Rotary FNQ Field Days last week was abuzz with excitement as the final round of the John Deere Tractor and Garden Tractor Pull took place.

Competitors from right across North Queensland descended upon the Mareeba Rodeo Grounds to test their tractors as they faced off against a purposebuilt weight transfer sled, where they were tasked with pulling the sled as far as they can along a 120m track.

Despite a number of impressive tractors on display throughout the two-day competition, it was Chris Maisel who was named the overall winner.

“It was obviously great to come away with the win - we brought 13 tractors overall and we were pulling with seven to-

day,” he said.

“The Tractor Pull is something we always enjoy competing in, as it provides us the opportunity to get our tractors out of the shed, cleaned up and see whose is the best.

“Not only that, it also is a great social experience that brings together people with similar interests which is always a good thing.”

NQ Tractor Pulling Inc. Secretary and Tractor Pull coordinator Bronwyn Dwyer described this year’s competition as a “resounding success”.

“We had 44 tractors along with 22 stationary tractors and four garden tractors at this year’s event,” she said.

“Participants don’t get the chance to get their tractors out too often, and given they’re vin-

tage tractors that are more than 40 years old, I think that’s what makes the Tractor Pull so special.

“Also, it was particularly great to see the young and upand-coming participants competing; they’re going to be the one’s coming through the ranks and most of them are kids of members so that’s great from the club’s perspective.”

Ms Dwyer took time to thank those who contributed to the John Deere Tractor and Garden Tractor Pull’s overwhelming success.

“I think we need to recognise the entire club and everyone who has helped put this together,” she said.

“In particular, a special thanks goes to Mark and Martin Brown, Chris Maisel and Peter Howe for their enormous contribution.”

High flyers morning tea leaves students on a high

RECOGNISED: Mareeba State High School students at the High Flyers morning tea.

MAREEBA State High School hosted a morning tea aimed at acknowledging the hard work of their students and rewarding them.

The morning tea, last Tuesday, garnered a population of 72 students’ being recognised for academic prowess.

These academic accomplish-

ments weren’t just for external subjects.

Gifted and Talented Coordinator Mrs Stefanie Prizmic said that the morning tea also acknowledged students for their report card grades.

“The purpose of the morning tea was to celebrate and congratulate students who did ex-

ceptionally well on their report cards from term one,” she said.

“Also for those students who participated in extracurricular activities in term one.

“Such as Brain Bee, Lions Youth of the year, Bendigo Bank junior observers and the chess competition.”

Some of the notable students

during the morning tea including the chess team who performed well and Gamuchirai Makoti who was the district and zone winner of Lions Youth of the Year earning her a ticket to Townsville.

“It was also mainly to celebrate those students who did really well on their report cards,”

she said.

“We had parents and teachers here as well recognising their children and seeing how well they are doing.

“I think the students are doing very well we had 72 students who only got A’s and B’s on their report cards.

The academic morning tea

hasn’t been used based of the report card format for many years.

“It’s important for us to continue to support those kids who work hard in school.”

Mrs Prizmic’s views on the students at Mareeba State High School is one of broad encouragement “I don’t think that I should just be working with gifted and talented students,” she said.

“I see my role as working with all students and trying to get them to be doing their best.

“Even if you’re not gifted and talented doesn’t mean you can’t do great things.”

Commenting on her new position of Gifted and Talented Coordinator Mrs Prizmic said that she “loves it”.

“I get to work with fantastic kids,” she said.

“I love my job; every day in my job is different.

“I really love working with the kids.”

Mrs Prizmic believes that she has some ‘big shoes to fill’ after her predecessor Mrs Ellacott.

“I think I’m doing okay,” she said.

“I think that I have a nice relationship with the kids.

The ‘High Flyers’ morning tea was followed by a morning tea aimed at the Distance education students who are pursuing other subjects out of the normal curriculum.

The Distance Ed morning tea that occurred yesterday was the first time the teachers who run the courses attended with their students.

CLUB NEWS Farm safety plea comes from the heart With Mareeba Lions

On June 16, Mareeba Lions will be holding the 2019 Metrogaine and Biggest BBQ to raise money specifically for the Australian Lions Childhood Cancer Research Foundation.

The event is assured to be a success with fantastic local support ensuring substantial funds will be raised for this great cause.

Lions Australia is one of Australia’s largest service organisations with almost 25,000 members and 1,200 clubs across Australia. Lions Australia raises over $20 million per annum to assist in community and health projects, and funding for Lions foundations and programmes.

Lions Australia has been supporting childhood cancer research at least as far back as 1976. Since that time childhood cancer survival rates have improved to about 80% but unfortunately every year in Australia more than 900 children are still diagnosed with cancer and three Australian Children die from cancer every week. Among childhood illnesses, cancer remains the most common cause of death in Australia.

Since 1996, Lions Australia has shown outstanding commitment contributing over $5 million to childhood cancer research. This effort has resulted in, amongst other things, safer and more effective blood stem cell transplantation for leukaemia patients following chemotherapy which can

lead to shorter hospitalisation and more rapid recovery. Lions have done a lot but the job is not over because we believe every child has a right to a healthy life.

The Mareeba Lions Family Fun Metrogaine and BBQ is an annual fundraising event undertaken by the club specifically to raise funds for the Australian Lions Childhood Cancer Research Foundation.

FARM safety was one of the three core themes of the 2019 Rotary FNQ Field Days, and it is an issue that hits close to home for this year’s event’s special guest Shane Webcke and Rotary FNQ Field Days Health and Safety Officer Joe Moro.

The theme is of particular relevance to Mr Webcke and Mr Moro as they share an unfortunate tragedy, having both lost their fathers to a workplace accident when they were young.

Mr Moro was just 11 years of age when his father died in a tractor accident whilst working on his tobacco farm in Biboohra in Far North Queensland.

Mr Moro spoke open and honestly about the impact his loss had on his family and his mother in particular.

“My dad died after falling off a tractor which then ran over him,” he said.

“He bled to death in the middle of the paddock by himself.

“The impact my father’s death had on our family was huge – I don’t believe my mother has ever recovered from the loss of her husband.”

Mr Moro said he felt now was the right time to implement farm safety as one of the themes at this year’s Field Days given the number of injuries and deaths that have occurred in rural communities in recent times.

“As many of us know, an elderly man lost his life in a tractor accident in this region last week, and ultimately it doesn’t matter how it happened, what matters is that one fatality is one too many,” he said.

“And for myself personally, whether on a farm or not, workplace safety is something I’m very passionate about and I don’t appreciate people who joke about it or take it lightly.

“Because the consequences are very serious, and there are plenty of people who know them firsthand as they’ve been told about something terrible that has

happened to one of their loved ones.”

Mr Moro noted his appreciation for Shane Webcke making an appearance at Field Days and delivering such a powerful message.

“I would love to say thank you to Shane on behalf of the Rotary FNQ Field Days team; I think any person who has the passion he does about farm safety and articulates it in the manner he does should be commended,” he said.

“He is driving such a strong message, and if there’s one family who doesn’t have to go through the trauma Shane and I’s family did because of initiatives like we’re doing at Field Days, then that is fantastic.”

Mr Webcke takes a similarly candid approach when speaking on farm safety, as he will often

paint a graphic picture regarding his father’s death in an attempt to bolster his message.

Mr Webcke was 17 when his father died in a workplace accident after a wool press he was using experienced a failure.

“I want people to get a sense of the horrific nature of a workplace accident,” he said.

“I then want them to lock that inside and vow and declare that when they go into their workplace, they will say to themselves, “I’m not dying today and I will not change my family’s life today”.

“And I implore people to do that because my family and I went through a similar thing to Joe; and we have never recovered.

“We don’t cry ourselves to sleep every night, but there is a hole in our existence that can’t

be filled and it never will be, so all I want to do is impress upon people the gravity of the risk that you take and what it means to the people who really pay the price, your family.”

Mr Webcke noted that he would like to applaud the Rotary FNQ Field Days for placing such an emphasis on farm safety.

“What better way to shine a light on such a pertinent issue than at Field Days,” he said.

“It’s a gathering of people from rural communities and the agricultural industry where everything they love is on display, and it provides us with an opportunity to also remind them of the people they love and the ramifications if they don’t take safety with the seriousness it deserves.

“It’s a perfect fit.”

Tableland Corps leader Miriam Newton-Gentle was happy with 2019 Red Shield Appeal on the Tablelands.

Red Shield appeal resounding success THE Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal was held last weekend across the country.

The Tablelands recorded a total of $3651 to date through static collection points during the weekend as well as door knocks operated by volunteers.

The money raised will be used throughout the local community to help support those in need mainly for Christmas hampers.

Tableland Corps leader Miriam Newton-Gentle felt that the

recent Red Shield Appeal went “very well”.

“The community here on the Tablelands is especially kind to the Salvation Army,” she said.

“And they are exceedingly generous in their giving.

“I’d like to thank every one of the volunteers who helped during the Red Shield Appeal and the community members’ for their generous donations.”

The Salvation Army was present at the Rotary FNQ Field days promoting their Salva-

tion Army Emergency Services (SAES).

The SAES are often first responders on the scene and help support emergency services like firefighters.

The SAES were present at the Watsonville bush fires and provided catering to all participating services in the QFES. Over the 21 days that they battled they produced 3500 meals to those who had lost their homes and livelihood.

KURANDA’S visitor experience is set to be enhanced with the launch of the fresh and vibrant Tourism Kuranda website.

Chair of the Tourism Kuranda Advisory Committee, Cr Lenore Wyatt said it was exciting to see the project delivered just in time for the peak tourist season. “Mareeba Shire Council has been developing this new website for many months with the key focus of making it easier for visitors to plan their visit to Kuranda,” Cr

Wyatt said.

“We are really excited about the launch of the new website which showcases the Village in the Rainforest and all it has to offer.”

The new website is fully mobile compatible with enhanced search optimisation.

Tourism Kuranda Executive Officer Kahlia Pepper said a fresh new layout, together with updated content and easy navigation are just some of the

“Through a combination of new features, Tourism Kuranda aims to not only grow visitor numbers to the site, but to position ourselves as the leading online site for Kuranda visitor information.”

VOLUNTEERISM is at the heart of the Rotary FNQ Field Days, and there are two no greater examples of the enormous role volunteers play in the event’s success than that of Geoff and Honor Redington.

Geoff (94) and Honor Redington (93) are Tolga residents and have been prominent figures in the Tablelands community spanning decades.

Geoff has been a Rotarian for 48 years, 31 years of which has been spent as a member of the Atherton Rotary Club, and he spoke on the importance of volunteering and the impact it has on a community as a whole.

“My wife and I have been heavily involved with volunteering for many years, and we feel society is better when people are willing to put back into their community,” he said.

“And I believe the Rotary

FNQ Field Days is a great example of that; there are hundreds of people (volunteers) who have contributed their time and energy to make this event a success.”

“We have been a part of the Field Days event here for more than 20 years, and I have seen firsthand it grow and grow into the wonderful community gathering it is today.”

While much of Geoff and Honor’s retired life has been spent volunteering for various community organisations, their propensity to give back was also evident throughout their professional career.

“I was the Matron of the Queensland Bush Children’s Health Scheme in Townsville, where we brought in children with all sort of health problems that couldn’t be treated where they were from,” Honor Redington said.

“It was a very interesting life being a part of that and something which was extremely rewarding.”

Geoff and Honor manned the Shelter Box stall, which displays an initiative that provides individuals and families with accommodation when tragedy has struck and they are without a roof over their head.

“To my knowledge, the Shelter Box has been around for more than 20 years and Rotary’s involvement with it has just been marvellous,” Geoff said.

“I firmly believe this has been one of Rotary’s greatest contributions to society.”

Geoff and Honor Redington said they would like to thank the Mareeba and Atherton Rotary Clubs for yet another fantastic Rotary FNQ Field Days.

Workplace safety and mental wellness was front and centre at the Field Days as special guest Shane Webcke delivered an influential message at a BBQ on Thursday night.

Aitken to light up the Far North

FORMER Mareeba local and musician 8 Ball Aitken will be making the trip across the Pacific Ocean as he is set to grace the stage at the Reef Hotel Casino in Cairns and the ORB in Atherton next week.

Aitken was born and raised in Mareeba however has called Nashville, Tennessee his home for the past eight years.

Otherwise known as ‘Music City’, Nashville is home to some of the greatest country music and blues singers in the world, and

“I’m really excited to get back to the region and perform; I still have so many friends in the area who are excited to see us play,” he said.

“I will be performing my new album Swamp Blues II, which I have been working on since last year.”

Aitken will be hoping Swamp Blues II will be as great a success as his last album Swamp Blues, which garnered him two Australian Blues Awards nominations.

“I was lucky enough to record my past two albums with some of the best blues musicians in Nashville,” he said.

“Most notably of which was J.J Johnson from the Tedeschi Trucks Band – he is definitely one of the best in the game.”

Aitken encouraged visitors to come along to his performance next weekend, noting that the Reef Stampede is a “celebration and party of for those who love rodeo, music and a good time”.

For those interested in attending, 8 Ball Aitken will be playing at the Reef Casino at 8pm on Thursday, June 13, 9:30pm on Friday, June 14, 10:30pm on Saturday June 15, and at the ORB in Atherton at 3pm on Sunday, June 16.

1. Preheat oven to 180C and line 2 baking trays with baking paper.

2. Place puff pastry sheets on bench to thaw and process chicken mince and egg together and transfer to a bowl.

3. Add stir fry sauce and the breadcrumbs to chicken and combine.

4. Add zucchini, carrot and onion, to food processor and process into fine pieces and add to chicken mixture and mix well. Halve all puff pastry sheets.

5. Divide chicken mix into 8 portions. Spoon an eighth of the mixture lengthways along center of each pastry sheet, use wet fingers to mould into a log. Fold 1 edge over chicken mixture then fold over other side to make a roll. Cut each roll into 6 equal portions.

Place onto baking sheets, brush with extra egg and sprinkle with sesame seeds. Bake in oven for 20-25 minutes or until the rolls have browned and are cooked through. Serve!!

A GUTSY effort by the Mareeba Bulls saw them fall short of the desired result on Saturday night as they took on the Southside Comets in round nine of the FNQ Football premiership.

The 1-0 loss sees them lose ground on the leaders with almost half of the season gone.

The first half was dominated by the Bulls who were refreshed after two weeks without a game.

Slick passing between the defence and midfield had the Comets on the back foot for most of the first half. Midway through the second half saw a lapse in concentration by the away side resulting is a simple tap in to fall behind.

It’s all uphill from here as

Coach Perry will see every game as a must win to try and make the top four.

The reserve grade on the other hand had a training run with Denis Allen’s side notching up double figures in a 10-1 romp over the Comets keeping them well in contention for honours this year.

In other results over the weekend on Friday night the men’s second division went down 4-1, the Fillies had a 1-1 draw.

The Bulls under 18 side had a promising start to their match and went ahead early and led on two occasions, but the Comets kept coming back at them and eventually went down 5-3.

THE visiting Yarrabah Seahawks have delivered an upset 28-22 win over the Atherton Roosters in Saturday night’s Cairns District Rugby League first grade premiership match at the Mungalli Creek Dairy Stadium.

Yarrabah rattled the Roosters early with two quick tries and led 12-0 after 15 minutes of play. But to their credit, the Roosters got themselves back in the contest with three tries of their own and went to the break leading 18-12.

Again Yarrabah were out of the blocks early for the second half restart with another two tries to put them back in front 24-18.

The visitors were now gathering momentum as Atherton wilted under a hefty weight of errors.

Atherton did fight back to trail 24-22 but another in the closing stages gave Yarrabah a six point win.

Although beaten, the Roosters remain in the top contenders on the points table which is led by

Bothers 12, Atherton 10, Yarrabah 10, Kangaroos 9, Innisfail 9, Mossman 8, Ivanhoes 7, Suburbs 6, Edmonton 4, Mareeba 4, Tully 1. In reserve grade, the Roosters and Yarrabah played a 22 all draw after the visitors led 22-12 at halftime.

The reserve grade points table after seven games is Yarrabah 11, Atherton 9, Kangaroos 9, Innisfail 8, Mossman 8, Suburbs 8, Brothers 8, Tully 6, Mareeba 6, Edmonton 4, Ivanhoes 3.

A better second half has helped the Roosters under 18 side to a 36-24 win over Yarrabah after the scores were locked at 18 all at the break. Innisfail and Ivanhoes head the under 18 points table on 13 followed by Brothers 12, Edmonton 10, Yarrabah 8, Atherton 8, Kangaroos 6, Mareeba 6, Tully 2, Suburbs 2, Mossman 0.

The Atherton Roosters play another home game this Saturday and host the Mossman Sharks.

Gators overpower Tigers to secure win THE Mareeba Gladiators AGrade side secured their second win of the season after defeating the Tully Tigers 18-16 away from home on Saturday night.

It is the first time the Gladiators have beaten the Tigers in Tully since 2008, and proves crucial in the context of their season as the win ensures they remain within arms reach of the top five.

The Gladiators have shown plenty of promise in their last three performances, after holding leads against competition heavyweights Kangaroos and

Brothers.

They haven’t been able to transfer those performances into wins however, yet their victory in Tully may spur the Mareeba outfit onto bigger and better things in 2019.

Saturday’s fixture saw a tough and gritty affair, as Tully led 4-0 for the first 50 minutes.

However, three quick tries to the Gladiators set up a 18-4 scoreline and all but sealed the win.

Despite the deficit, the Tigers refused to go away, scoring two

tries to make it a 18-16 scoreline and in doing so set up a nail-biting finish.

The Gladiators were able to hold on however and secure the two points.

Gladiators outside back Eze Harper starred with two tries and five-eighth Jayden Edwards was perfect with the boot.

Mareeba Gladiators coach Terry Aquilina said he was extremely proud of his team’s performance.

“We showed plenty of grit as a side and we’ve done that in our last few performances,” he said.

“We’re almost back to our full availability as a squad and that’s why we’re showing improvement.

“We’ll be getting our captain Trent Barnard back very soon so that will add plenty and we’re really looking forward to seeing the sort of impact he has on the team.”

In Reserve Grade, the Gladiators went down 24-10.

The Gladiators have this weekend off with the bye.

Their next fixture will be against Kangaroos at Davies Park on June 15.
