Anzac Day across the Region - Pages 16 & 17
No small problem
THESE captive-bred baby saltwater crocs might look disarmingly cute, but don’t be deceived. Their older wild cousins have been stirring up trouble across the Far North, already killing one man near Innisfail recently and invading several farming properties at Biboohra. The issue reached a flashpoint last Wednesday when Katter’s Australian Party MPs heard from several concerned locals at a community forum in Mareeba. FULL STORY – PAGE 7
Uber threat to local cabbies A LOCAL taxi company owner fears his business will not be viable long-term if Uber rolls out on the Tablelands. Atherton Taxis co-owner Greg Brown said the ride-sharing service made a mockery of existing taxi businesses who forked out thousands of dollars for licenses, insurance and safety equipment. “It’s certainly going to affect our re-sale value. How do we sell it as a taxi business with that hanging over your head, knowing that anyone can come in?,” he said. “We’re a regulated, protected business and

we pay accordingly through our registration and compulsory third-party insurance.” Mr Brown said with the rise of Uber, there was little incentive for people to buy into the taxi business. While Uber is yet to come to Mareeba or the Tablelands, the service has been available in Cairns since March, earning the ire of local taxi drivers in the city. The State Government introduced a $100 million “Industry Adjustment Assistance Package” last December to assist existing taxi and limou-
sine operators in an attempt to minimise the impact of Uber, which was legalised last September. Until last month, taxi licence holders who held a licence before August 11, 2016 were eligible to apply for $20,000 in compensation per taxi service license, capped at two licenses per license holder. The package also established a $26.7 million “industry hardship fund” with payments distributed on a per license basis. The State will not be releasing any new taxi licences for purchase before 2018.

Chamber enters new era A PROMISE to modernise and revitalise the Atherton Tableland Chamber of Commerce will be the focus for newly-elected president Christine Doan. Ms Doan, a former vice-president of the Chamber, was elected to the top job at last Monday’s annual general meeting. “We need to modernise the Chamber and make it relevant to business owners on the Tablelands,” she said. “I still see a lot of potential for a Chamber of Commerce in a small town, if we figure out how to change its role so that it fits the 21st century.” Ms Doan said the Chamber needed to embrace not just retailers along Main St, but the growing number of innovative startups that were beginning to pop up across the Tablelands. “Business is not today what it always has been, it’s got a new face,” she said. “There’s a great deal more online activity. That didn’t exist 10 or 20 years ago. If you think about where the great successes of the late 20th century and early 21st century came from, they’ve come out of Silicon Valley – high-tech internet-based startups, some of which are now worth billions.
“We need to look at new kinds of jobs, whether that’s creating your own jobs by starting an internet business or having an innovative idea in agriculture.” Ms Doan said more than just a “fancy word”, innovation would be key to growing and sustaining Tablelands businesses into the future. “Innovation means doing what you’ve done before but in a way that makes you more money or more competitive in the future,” she said. “Innovation is just change and there’s been so much disruption in business in the last decade that we really need to think very hard about how we can best serve the Tablelands’ small businesses, whether that’s in agriculture, Main St or totally online.” A co-founder of Startup and Innovation Tablelands, Ms Doan said she also wanted to position the Tablelands as an attractive area for investment. “I think it’s very important that we find investors who are willing to put money into this place that has such amazing resources and is so underfunded,” she said.
NEW FACE: Christine Doan is the new president of the Atherton Tableland Chamber of Commerce.
Nashos take top award A LOCAL National Servicemen's Association has been recognised as Queensland’s top branch for 2016. The Tableland Branch of the National Servicemen’s Association received the “Peter Ryan Award” late last month for outstanding work by a branch in promoting the association, including publicity and dedication. Mr Ryan was a life member and state president of the association from 1994 to 1997. It marks the second time the Tableland branch has received the award after a win in 2013, accepted by then president, the late Des Nella. “It is not often that a branch picks up the award twice, but to do so in a short period of time is a bonus,” said current Tableland branch president John Hardy. “I would like to dedicate the win to Des Nella who passed away on September 1, 2015. The efforts of fellow members and supporters should also be recognised.” 2016 marked a momentous year for the local branch, with 12 memorial plaques of deceased members unveiled at the National Servicemen’s shelter at Rocky Creek War Memorial Park. More than 100 people attended the ceremony with 10 families represented, while Mr Hardy produced a
commemorative booklet for families and members. That event was followed by another one this year when a further nine memorial plaques were added in February. The future of the association’s recruiting revolves around the “50,000 Lost Legion” – those nashos called up under the 1965 to 1972 scheme but did not serve in Borneo or Vietnam. Any GOOD JOB: National Servicemen’s Association Tableland Branch president of the 35,000 men who John Hardy accepts the Peter Ryan award from state president Alex Garlin on completed alternative March 25 at the old Wacol Army Barracks near Brisbane. National Service in the Citizen Military Forces Servicemen’s shelter opposite the World War II igloo for five or six years are also welcome to join. Members are presently out and about fundraising at along the Kennedy Highway near Tolga. Anyone wishing to place a memorial plaque on the shopping centres with the selling of ANZAC merchanwall for next year should contact branch secretary Terdise supported by a raffle. ry Edmondson on 4095 4154 or email john.hardy51@ The Tableland Branch meets at 10am on the second Sunday of each month at Rocky Creek’s National bigpond.com

COMING BACK: Seafood King will once again start operating out at Kerribee Park every Friday after a licensing issue was resolved.
A LICENSING issue which forced a Mareeba seafood business to shut up shop at Kerribee Park looks set be rectified this week. Byrnes St business Seafood King had been selling seafood every Friday at the rodeo grounds when they were told to cease trading by Mareeba Shire Council earlier this month. The issue stemmed from the fact the business did not hold a commercial food license, which would allow them to sell seafood to people visiting Kerribee Park for a feed. Seafood King was already zoned to sell seafood to grey nomads staying within the park’s grounds and at events held there, but needed a commercial license to sell to visitors not staying there. Council CEO Peter Franks confirmed a complaint had been made against Seafood
King but council was already aware of the issue after hearing a radio advertisement and would have taken action regardless. Mr Franks said council officers had met with Seafood King owner Kathy Harriman to discuss what changes would need to be made to qualify for a commercial food license. “They expanded their business, which is great. All they have to do is tick the necessary boxes,” he said. “They just need to do one upgrade to their kitchen, which isn’t a big deal.” Mareeba District Rodeo Association president Darryl Chaplain also met with council last Wednesday to discuss the issue. Because Seafood King operates on the Association’s property at Kerribee Park, the Association will need to apply for the commercial license.
The temporary shutdown of Seafood King caused a community outcry last week and Ms Harriman said she was grateful the issue had now been sorted. “It’s really good news,” she said. “Hopefully, we’re aiming to be back this Friday, if not the following.” Mrs Harriman said she was not aware she needed a commercial food license to sell to non-staying visitors at Kerribee Park, where the business had been operating from once a week for the last two years. “We didn’t realise at all that had to be done,” she said. Mrs Harriman also thanked the community for the overwhelming support she had received for her business. “We’re keen to keep going and the support we’ve had has been great,” she said. “It was all driven by our customers.”
FROM Page 1 They would also “liaise closely with the Motor Accident Insurance Commission (MAIC) to set Compulsory Third Party insurance premiums for personalised transport vehicles” and “recommend safety standards and regulatory changes to the minister, including in relation to safety cameras and vehicle identification”. But Mr Brown doubted the Commissioner would be effective. “Whether they do anything or not is another thing. It’s like the ACCC. What do they do about fuel prices? Nothing,” he said. “The trouble is Google’s got a bigger budget than the Queensland Government.” Liberal Nation Party Deputy Leader Deb Frecklington said the Commissioner would “ensure safe transport for passengers and drivers while also sensibly removing red-tape to benefit passengers by easing the pressure on fares”. “The commissioner will act as an ombudsman for the industry and a source of independent advice for the minister and will be responsible for recommending safety requirements including CTP insurance, safety cameras, vehicle identification, licencing and registration,” she said. “A disappointing hallmark of Labor’s changes has been the uncertainty and unfair treatment of licence owners and operators.” Ms Frecklington said the LNP had worked closely with Taxi Council Queensland to ensure there was a level playing field for drivers and owners.

STILL THERE: The bat colony at Bicentennial Lakes.
MAREEBA Shire Council’s bat consultant has urged residents to be patient as efforts are made to move the animals towards Granite Creek. Tolga Bat Hospital founder Jenny Maclean said it would be a gradual process to disperse the bat colony at Bicentennial Lakes, where they have set up between Mareeba Swimming Pool and Keeble St. “They’re not usually in Mareeba in the first half of the year and we’ve had a really long, dry and hot summer,” she said. “Their behaviour is different, the fruiting and flowering is different. The bats are just trying to survive. “There must be a good enough food supply
around the Mareeba area for them to be staying there.” A council spokesman said a few bats had moved to Granite Creek but had again moved on. “Council will continue to monitor the whereabouts of the colony and make attempts to move them out of residential areas,” he said. Council wants to keep the bats from returning to Basalt Gully, where they caused unwanted noise and smell for the adjacent Mareeba Community Kindergarten in Stewart St since arriving in April last year. They were then dispersed by council officers late last month before arriving at Bicenten-
nial Lakes. “The emphasis has been on keeping them out of Basalt Gully by a number of means, including vegetation management,” said Ms Maclean. “The dispersal has actually been very successful so far in that council moved them out of Basalt Gully in two days. “The plan is if we can move the bats to Granite Creek, we can then move them up along there a little bit.” Council is expected to restart dispersal efforts of the colony at Bicentennial Lakes this week using smoke and bird frite cartridges.

Community calls for action on crocs THE Mareeba community has come out in force to demand action be taken on removing saltwater crocodiles from waterways in the region. More than 70 people attended a community forum run by Katter’s Australian Party last Wednesday to discuss the issue at Mareeba Bowls Club as part of a wider North Queensland tour. Several stakeholders from Cooktown and Cape York also attended. Kennedy MP Bob Katter, Dalrymple MP Shane Knuth and Member for Mt Isa Robbie Katter listened to pleas from local residents and councillors as they draft a Bill for a controlled croc culls, shooting safaris and legalising egg collection in Queensland. “I’ve got a real issue with the fact we’ve got crocodiles in rivers up here where they’re not supposed to be,” Mareeba Shire councillor Lenore Wyatt said. “I just feel we all need to step up and something needs to be done.” Cr Wyatt said the crocodiles that currently inhabited Quade’s Dam and Two Mile Creek needed to go, fearing they could eventually find their way into the Barrier River – a popular swimming spot for locals. “Our way of life will be gone if they’re there and they are left where they are,” she said. Mr Knuth said he was sick of being dictated to on croc policy and management by bureaucrats and politicians in South-East Queensland. “We’re getting ripped to pieces. We can’t swim in our waterways and the government gets in there and backs the crocs over the people,” he said. “What we are sick of hearing is the South-East telling us what is in our best interests up here.” The push for a croc cull comes after a spear fisherman was killed by a crocodile at Palmer Point north of Innisfail last month and a pet dog was taken by a croc in the same region on the weekend of April 1. A group of Biboohra farmers have previously spoken out to The Express about the growing numbers of crocodiles found on their properties, fearing someone will soon be killed unless action is taken by the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection. One of those farmers affected, Evan McGrath, spoke passionately at last Wednesday’s forum, explaining how serious the situa-

tion had become. Mr Katter Jr said his party was prepared for a showdown with State Government and Opposition MPs over the legislation, expected to be introduced into parliament next month. “If they’re not good enough to change laws that will protect us from being killed by crocodiles then they don’t deserve to be there,” he said. “Even after people are dying, they’re not listening. Cooktown waterfront roadworks to start soon COOKTOWN’S waterfront works site has become a hive of activity with supply and levelling of fill in preparation for services installation now well underway. Remediation works on the seawall and marina were finalised last month, and roadworks will begin late April, which are dependant on dry weather. “Once the site regrading is largely complete we will concentrate on roadworks, which will include lifting the road profile, asphalt sealing, parking, curbing and streetlights,” said Cook Shire Council Project Manager Chris Woods.
“Following that will be the installation of services – power, water, irrigation and so on, before the final step of landscaping.” The waterfront project is expected to be finalised in late 2017, and will include a children’s water play area, kiosk and toilets, barbecues, parklands, fishing platforms and a waterfront walk. Remediation works have been undertaken to ensure structural integrity of the site after a complaint was made to the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection last year.

Campaign to get safe with switches A STATE Government campaign to promote the use of safety switches in homes to prevent electrical shock hopes to save lives. Industrial Relations Minister Grace Grace officially launched the “One safety switch may not be enough” campaign earlier this month to better protect Queenslanders against electrical shock in their homes. “Safety switches save lives – it’s that simple,” she said. “Unlike circuit breakers which protect equipment, safety switches help protect us, our family and anyone visiting our home from potentially fatal electric shock. “Safety switches turn off the power in a fraction of a second when leakage of current is detected.” A current leak can happen via a faulty powerpoint or electrical appliance, or if someone accidently hits a live cable while drilling into a wall or gardening. Safety switches have been a mandatory requirement for power and lighting circuits in new homes, rentals and older homes as they’re sold for a few years now. But the risk is still there on other circuits. “A safety switch can only protect you if it’s fitted to the circuit that’s been damaged, whether it’s for air conditioning, the stove, hot water, or the pool,” Ms Grace said. “And that’s the reason we are launching this campaign – to get the message out that one safety switch may not be enough.” Six deaths in Queensland homes over recent years would have been prevented had a safety switch been fitted to all circuits. “Six people who would still be alive today but for the lack of a simple, inexpensive safety device,” Ms Grace said. “So next time you get electrical work done, why not get the electrician to put in some extra safety switches. "They aren’t expensive at all…It’s well worth it for the added protection for you and your family.” For more information, head to worksafe.qld.gov.au/ safetyswitches

Hospital upgrade hits design phase 1
$ 89 kg
BIG PLANS: Atherton Hospital is moving closer to its planned redevelopment.
ATHERTON’S hospital redevelopment has entered its design phase as the project moves closer to construction. The 104-year-old hospital will receive an upgraded emergency department and new operating theatres as part of the State Government’s $230 million “Advancing Queensland’s Health Infrastructure Program” announced in the 2016-17 budget. Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service (CHHHS) CEO Clare Douglas said the capital project team was currently engaging with key stakeholders from the hospital and community to make sure “appropriate clinical services are included in the redevelopment”. “At this stage, the current focus areas include the emergency department and theatres with other areas being prioritised through the consultation process,” she said. “This planning process will inform the detailed business case and final budget. Commencement of construction and completion of the project will be determined by this timeline and approvals required throughout this
process.” Clinical services planning, which will form part of the infrastructure design options, has also been undertaken and the evaluation has identified the prioritisation of new clinical space to improve patient flow and safety. Ms Douglas said over the course of its century- old history the hospital had been developed in stages, rather than being designed for optimal patient flow. “While there will be no change to services for the Tablelands region, this is an opportunity for us to improve patient flow throughout the hospital and in turn, improve the way our staff provide care in updated, contemporary facilities,” she said. “We’ve started our consultation process with staff at Atherton and we’ll be seeking input from patients, carers and other members of the community during the design phase.” Ms Douglas said Atherton Hospital was the “largest referral centre on the Tablelands” and had been in the mix for upgrades by CHHHS for some time.
Katter Party threatens budget over crocs PASSING the next State budget could be dependent on the government conceding to a croc cull. Katter’s Australian Party MPs Robbie Katter and Shane Knuth said they were not interested in “rubber-stamping” the budget until the government addressed several priority issues affecting North Queensland. One of those will be a demand for a controlled croc cull, shooting safaris and legalised egg collection, which will form part of a Bill to be introduced into parliament next month. “Crocs are eating people alive up here. We can’t stand by and let that keep happening,” Mr Katter said. “I think it can be hard for people to understand the issue if they haven’t lived up here. We don’t want a croc cull for fun, this is not some fun cowboy activity. We need a croc cull because this is affecting people’s lives.” But Mr Katter said there were other issues he wanted to discuss with Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk, which will form part of a “rescue package” of initiatives for North Queensland.

“The government shouldn’t expect to have a clear run when it comes to the budget. They must acknowledge the issues facing the people of North Queensland and show genuine commitment to solutions,” he said. “We take all legislation put before the house seriously, and we expect the government to do the same with the issues we take to them on behalf of our electorates. “If they want us to take the budget seriously, they’re going to have to make some commitments around the issues affecting rural and regional Queenslanders.” Mr Katter also said other crossbenchers had similar feelings when it came to holding the government to account. “I know Rob Pyne and Billy Gordon won’t provide the government with a free ride if they don’t feel they are delivering for their electorates,” he said. “We’re looking forward to working with them over the coming months as we’ve got some very clear alignment given that between us we represent a vast majority of North Queensland.”

Weather camera locations wanted THE region’s general aviation community is being urged to have their say on where a network of weather cameras should be installed. Run by air traffic control provider Airservices Australia, the survey aims to install the weather camera network in locations that will deliver the greatest safety benefit. Aviation activist and entrepreneur Dick Smith donated $160,000 to Airservices in December last year to fund the network of weather cameras across Australia. Airservices CEO Jason Harfield said Airservices had been working closely with the Bureau of Meteorology and airports to identify sites with existing power, communication infrastructure and cameras, using these to provide the new service. “Once these sites have been identified, we will initially launch the website in May with six locations. The next phase of the project will focus on planning and delivering camera infrastructure to other locations as we continue to expand the weather camera network,” Mr Harfield said. “By completing the survey, industry will assist Airservices to identify those locations that the aviation community feels would most benefit from up-to-date visual weather assessments.” The survey will be open until April 30. Once the results of the survey have been collated, Airservices will provide further information on the final selection of locations and the schedule of the weather camera network roll out. To complete the survey, head to www.surveymonkey.com/r/Airservicesweathercamerasurvey

Flu vaccinations available for residents ELIGIBLE Mareeba residents can receive their flu vaccination free of charge at Mareeba Hospital from April 21. Mareeba Hospital nurse unit manager Rose Vallier said that this year’s vaccination protected against two “A” strains and two “B” stains of influenza. Clinics would operate every Friday up until May 26. “Our flu vaccination clinics
are open from 9am to 12pm and no appointment is required,” she said. Eligible people include adults aged 65 years or older, pregnant women, people older than six months with medical condition that make them more susceptible to influenza, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children aged between six months and five years, Aboriginal and Torres Strait
Islander people aged 15 years and over and people with a disability. Ms Vallier said flu strains changed every year which is why it was important to get the flu vaccination. “We encourage those eligible to drop in and receive their vaccination to avoid getting the flu this season,” she said. “Other community members can access the flu vaccination by visiting their GP.”

GOOD START: Mareeba District Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association president Joe Moro believes farmers are happy with how the first quarter of this year has panned out.
Solid start to the farming year
THE MAREEBA district’s farming season is off to a good start, as farmers wait and see what the next quarter will bring ahead of a new water year. Mareeba District Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association president Joe Moro said the first quarter of this year had been relatively positive for local farmers. “Although the numbers of Kensington Pride mangoes were down, other varieties were up and I think from an economic point of view, it has delivered good results overall,” he said. “Not all farmers benefitted from the higher prices because they might have finished on the wrong side of the season, either pre-New Year or after New Year.” But Mr Moro said avocado production and prices had been good throughout the harvest season. “We don’t like to get ahead of ourselves but it’s been a good start to the year from a horticultural side of things,” he said. “Farmers have still been able to produce a good crop, even though the weather hasn’t been favourable with a high temperature range and lack of rain.” Mr Moro said based on the current
capacity of Tinaroo Dam, which sits at about 51 per cent, it was unlikely Mareeba-Dimbulah irrigators would receive a full (100 per cent) allocation at the start of the next water year on July 1. Dam operator Sunwater resets the medium priority allocation given to irrigators at the start of every new water year. The allocation is then reviewed on a monthly basis and, if feasible, can be increased on top of the base level of allocation set until it reaches 100 per cent. The medium priority water allocation for this current water year was increased from 81 per cent to 100 per cent on February 1. “From the forecasting I’ve seen it’s more likely the dam is going to come down in capacity rather than rise,” he said. “But it’s up to the weather.” Mr Moro said while this year’s wet season has certainly brought more rain for farmers than last year, anticipation was growing ahead of the new water allocation on July 1. “There’s a lot of concern as to where we end up with the announced allocation,” he said.

Anzac spirit to carry on A MAREEBA Vietnam veteran hopes the next generation will never forget the service and sacrifice of those who went to war. Mareeba RSL Sub Branch secretary Alan Webb said it was critical the spirit and message of Anzac Day continued to resonate with young people. “The younger generation has to be educated about this day to make them realise what it’s all about,” he said. “We do it to inspire them to do their bit for the nation once a year. “We certainly hope for another successful gathering.” Mr Webb, who served with the 3rd Cavalry Regiment in Vietnam between 1970 and 1972, said Anzac Day always carried personal significance for veterans. “We always stand and reflect on the blokes who never came back or the wounded who you never saw
again after they went into the system,” he said. “There’s that camaraderie amongst ourselves. With the passing of the years the memories slowly fade, but we have to keep reminding ourselves with annual commemorations as to what it’s all about.” Mr Webb said he had always been impressed by the strong turnout at Mareeba’s Anzac Day dawn service and subsequent march through Byrnes St to the cenotaph later that morning. “Primary school students normally lay some wreaths and it’s great to see them do it,” he said. “Our guest speaker this year is Billy Gordon, the local Member for Cook.” Spreading their message throughout the shire, local veterans will visit Mareeba State High, Biboohra State School and St Stephen’s Catholic College in the lead up to Anzac Day.
Tablelands stops to reflect EVERYONE will have the opportunity to honour the sacrifices made by local servicemen at services held across the region this Anzac Day. Commemorations will begin with dawn services at Atherton, Herberton, Malanda, Millaa Millaa, Mt Garnet, Ravenshoe and Yungaburra. Evelyn will host a 6:20am service at the war memorial on Jonsson Rd and Yungaburra residents will gather at 7:45am in Maude Kehoe Place for a main parade and service. Services will continue during the morning with a 9am mass at St Joseph’s Catholic Church in Atherton and war graves observance at 9.30am before the main parade departs at 10.45am from the Atherton
Remembrance Park. A service at the grave site of Padre White in the Herberton Cemetery will commence at 9am with a main parade through the town centre starting at the Royal Hotel at 9.50am. Mt Garnet’s main parade will assemble at the Mt Garnet Hotel at 9am with a morning tea afterwards at the town hall. For the Malanda main parade, people will assemble behind Malanda Bulk Fuel at 9.10am. In Ravenshoe, the main parade will start at 9.30am from the Highland Bakery and in Millaa Millaa at 10.15am from the Primary School. april 25 2017 LEST WE FORGET: Mareeba historical researcher Elwyn Troughton has fought a two year battle to get a fallen soldier’s name engraved on the Mareeba cenotaph.
D’Arcy’s sacrifice not forgotten A TWO-year mission to recognise the service and sacrifice of a fallen World War I soldier at Mareeba’s cenotaph has finally been accomplished. Local historical researcher Elwyn Troughton has been lobbying Mareeba Shire Council to have Private D’Arcy Allan Grainer’s name engraved on the Cenotaph. The 19-year-old was killed in action while serving with the 26th Australian Infantry Battalion in France in July 1916 and came from the old mining town of Thornborough, just over an hour’s drive west of Mareeba. Ms Troughton said it was imperative all those from the Mareeba Shire who served were properly recognised. “It’s about the boys. If we can’t remember them, then Lest We Forget means nothing,” she said. “These are lads who put on the Australian Imperial uniform and fought for the freedom and liberty of others,
and we still have it in this country today. “The Dawn Service is something I don’t miss.” Private Grainer’s name was temporarily placed alongside the others by Ms Troughton on the cenotaph’s Roll of Honour in late July last year to mark the centenary of his death in France. Private Grainer died on the same day as another soldier whose name is engraved on the cenotaph, Private J.E. Bowers. Private Grainer has no known grave but his name is recorded on the Australian National Memorial in Villers-Bretonneux, France. Mareeba Shire councillor Mary Graham put forward a motion at a recent council meeting to have Private Grainer’s name added to the cenotaph.

Golf tournament a swinging success MAREEBA Golf Club has celebrated another successful Mitsubishi Classic with more than 100 competitors from across the Far North teeing off. Club captain Gavin Smith was thrilled with the turnout for the 36-hole event, held between April 8 and 9. “It was pretty exciting and a good turnout considering it was school holidays,” he said. “A week prior to the Classic we were only looking at about 70 players so we ended doing better than what we thought.” Nick Duncan (150) was crowned the overall men’s winner while Jacqui Lambert (170) came up trumps in the women’s division. Meanwhile, the net winners were Danny Bradley (138) and Cathy Cobavie (146).
“We were very pleased with the way it ran. A lot of players came up from Paradise Palms, Half-Moon Bay, Cairns, Gordonvale and Mossman,” Mr Smith said. “They were all very impressed with our course and facilities up here.” Unfortunately, no-one was able to net the eighth hole prize of a Mitsubishi Triton valued at $40,000, despite an incredibly close attempt by Ross Sheehy. Players needed to hit a 137m hole-in-one to win. “It was a terrific shot. Ross was about eight inches off the cup,” Mr Smith said. The club is hoping for at least 150 starters for their Open tournament on April 22 and 23.
Rod Cade, Ron Blake, Don Tidswell and Annette Tidswell
GOOD HIT OUT: Mitsubishi Classic overall winners Jacqui Lambert and Nick Duncan.

Bulls thrashed by Heat in Cup clash MAREEBA Bulls have been knocked out of the FFA Cup after a 4-1 thumping by FNQ Heat at Borzi Park last Thursday night. In what was a fiery encounter, the Bulls were on the back foot early on in the piece when a Heat ball deflected off the crossbar before being neatly headed in to go 1-0 up by the 5th minute. The visitors maintained pressure on Mareeba, Heat striker and captain Jamie Carroll looking particularly dangerous in the box as he attempted to capitalise on several crosses. The Heat had multiple chances in the first 13
minutes of the match, but Bulls keeper Adrian Vedelago made a number of impressive saves to keep them at bay. A clunky attack spoiled the Bulls chances in front of the box, despite a Wayne Srhoj header narrowly scooting past the upright in the 20th minute. The Heat continued to press and Carroll made it 2-0 by the 27th minute before nailing another just seven minutes later to give his side a commanding lead, the Bulls struggling in defence without injured captain Alex Plowman.
Youth soar in second div comp
A number of close calls went Mareeba’s way early on in the second half when striker Steven Cater was brought down in the box during the 55th minute. Midfielder David Ruiz stepped up to score the subsequent penalty and give the Bulls a sniff at 3-1. The hope didn’t last long when a rough tackle by Robert Pendenza on the Heat’s Jack Glover forced him to be sent off. Left with only 10 men, the Bulls looked helpless despite a few impressive charges up the field
by Jaydon Wells, Srhoj and Jason Haydon. Heat defender Charlie Beverley added to the Bulls’ misery in the 71st minute when he pounced on a cross to make it 4-1. Fatigue slowed the game down in the last 10 minutes before the final whistle blew to end a disappointing night in Mareeba. The Bulls will next play away against Innisfail on April 22 in Round 5 of the FNQ Premier League.

A DECISION to play Mareeba Bulls’ best and brightest young talent in FNQ Football’s second division competition is paying off in spades. Facing a lack of numbers to make up a team in this season’s Under 18 youth division, Bulls technical director Alex Srhoj decided to form another second division side, known as Mareeba Black. The team, which comprises of youth players, surplus second division players and club veterans, have notched some big wins already this season, including a 5-0 thrashing of Edge Hill White at Borzi Park on April 7. Mareeba Black coach Andre Soncin was delighted with his side’s performance so far, knowing the level of intensity would be a step up for most players in his team. “The idea of this team is that we keep the youth players together so they could grow as a unit,” he said. “And that’s what we’ve seen. Skillwise, they’ve got it, but it’s that extra intensity now they’re playing with and a bit more maturity. “That gap between where we were as youth players and now as senior players is getting tighter all the time.”
Soncin said the young side already had the advantages of speed and fitness and was fast learning to match the physicality of the senior competition. “The two teams we’ve lost against have only been by a goal and they’re the top two teams in the comp,” he said. “They wouldn’t be playing at this intensity if they were still playing in the youth comp, because every game is almost like a grand final for them now.” Mareeba Orange coach Angelo Tatti and club veteran Dennis Allen also play for Black, adding some experience and stability to a relatively young squad mostly made up of 17 to 19-year-olds. “I can’t find a weak player,” Soncin said. “I’ve got five on the bench and I’m changing them all the time because they deserve a run on the field.” The step up in competition has already netted young Ivan Jensen a call up to the premiers, where he scored two goals on debut in the Bulls’ 8-0 thrashing of Edge Hill back in Round 3. “We’re more than competitive and now we’re starting to dominate,” Soncin said.
