MEMBERS of the Mareeba community donned the pink and rolled the arm over for a good cause at Firth Park on Saturday.

The event, which was organised by Mareeba locals Ashlee Ellis and Steven Wilkinson, aimed to raise money and awareness for the breast cancer charity the McGrath Foundation.

Ms Ellis said the inspiration behind the event was one borne out of her and Mr Wilkinson’s shared love of cricket and desire to give back.

“This is the first year we have run this event, and we’re really happy with how it has gone,” she said.

“We’re already thinking of doing it again next year and

hopefully we’ll have even more people come on board.

“We received great feedback from those who attended which was really pleasing from our end.”

Event-goers could donate through money donations or by purchasing the merchandise available on the day, of which included pink hats and bandan-

“Our goal was to raise $500, so hopefully once the money is counted we were able to reach that target,” Ms Ellis said.

Ms Ellis said she would like to recognise her partner as well as the Mareeba community for their support.

“I want to thank Steven for

his enormous help in organising this event,” she said.

“Added to that, I appreciate the backing from those in the region in ensuring this event was a great success.

“If anyone is thinking about holding a fundraiser for a worthy cause, I strongly recommend it; it is so much fun and I can’t wait to do it again.”

Program upskilling rural health workers THE Mareeba Hospital’s Ry D’Arcy became one of Queensland’s first physiotherapists to complete the level one Rural Generalist Training Program.

The work-integrated program aims to provide practical experience and development for early career professionals in the specific area of rural and remote health needs.

Mr D’Arcy, who is a James Cook University graduate, began working at the Mareeba Hospital just over two years ago and noted his rural upbringing as a source of inspiration for undertaking the program.

“Being from Ingham originally, I have always had a passion for rural health and I felt this program was a great opportunity

to upskill and become wellversed in rural and remote health practices,” he said.

“The program provided me with a great insight into the rural generalist workforce, and it has further prepared me should my career take me to even more remote communities in the future.”

As part of the program, Mr D’Arcy undertook a service project which involved the development of an Allied Heath Assistant (AHA) training package.

As a result, a once a week, five-month long outpatient orthopaedic program was implemented within the Mareeba Hospital Physiotherapy Department, of which has been hailed a resounding success.

Mr D’Arcy said the Rural

Generalist Training Program was extremely beneficial and urged recent graduates and early career professionals to take part in it.

“I am really glad I did it; and I look forward to potentially furthering my training through the Rural Generalist Program’s level two offering,” he said.

Mr D’Arcy said he would like to thank his supervisor and senior physiotherapist Monica Madrid as well as the Tablelands Allied Health team leader Kim Wyllie for their continued support.

Farmers unite in fight for better milk prices

AS a viral video surfaced last week of a South Australian dairy farmer stating her intentions to leave the industry due to its lack of economic sustainability, the future of dairy farming has driven considerable discussion amongst the public.

The video notes the crippling impact $1 milk is having on our farmers’ bottom line, along with the lack of action that is being taken by our State and Federal Governments to ensure a fair and equitable margin on retail milk is achieved.

Those concerns are shared by dairy farmers across the country, and those in the industry who operate on the Atherton Tablelands had the opportunity to voice their opinions to the Minister for Water Resources and Agriculture David Littleproud as he visited the region last month.

One such farmer who was pleased with Mr Littleproud’s visit was Malanda dairy farmer Dennis English.

Mr English, who is also a farmer representative of the Dairy Farmers Milk Co-operative (DFMC), said the dairy farming industry in Australia is

at a crossroads.

“Economically things are still very tight,” he said.

“We haven’t got much wriggle-room at the moment, and that is due to constant downward pressure on the milk price.

“The outlook on the state of dairy farming in the region is still up in the air as Queensland isn’t producing as much milk as we need.

“We’re over a 100 million litres a year short, which is being trucked in. That milk used to be supplied by Queensland farmers but it’s not anymore.”

Mr English said the issues ultimately lay with the farm gate price farmers are receiving.

“A lot of people who are leaving the industry, it’s not because they’re bad farmers, it’s because the price they are being paid is unsustainable,” he said.

“It was good to have the Ag Minister visit the Tablelands last month as farmers were able to discuss with him how to enforce a mandatory code of conduct for the supermarkets.”

Mr English said he was hopeful that the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s (ACCC) inquiry could shed further light on the raw deal farmers are experiencing from

“The report chose to highlight the problems with the processors as opposed to the supermarkets,” he said.

“There are three bodies involved (from the farm to the point of sale), and considering they are locked into a ten year contract, I don’t see how they (processors)

can be the only one’s found to be skimping the farmers.

“At the end of the day we have been made to just wear any economic loss.”

St Stephen’s 2019 student leaders ST Stephen’s Catholic College officially welcomed a new crop of senior leaders last week as they held their annual opening mass.

The mass was held to commission and present this year’s senior leaders with their badges.

The four college captains for the class of 2019 are Kyrah Johnston, Jake Priestly, Jonah Williams and Deborah Hermanus, all of whom noted their enthusiasm about facing the challenges that come with being a leader.

“Being selected as a leader is quite a big deal for me, it was a long process to go through and for it to end with me being named as a college captain is a really proud moment,” Kyrah said.

“My aim in this role is to be heavily involved with the community, and I feel as though we have a great group of stu-

dent leaders who will be able to achieve that.”

Fellow captain Deborah Hermanus echoed Kyrah’s jubilance at being named college captain.

“My sister was a captain at the school, so when the opportunity presented itself to be a leader here myself, it was something I really wanted to do,” she said.

Deborah said she also hopes to adopt the community focused outlook that Kyrah spoke about, as she noted her desire to help foster personal development initiatives at the school.

“I’m passionate about helping students improve on their communication skills through activities like public speaking, and if I can encourage some of the younger kids to get involved that will be fantastic to see.”

Jonah Williams and Jake Priestly said they would like to thank members of the staff for

their encouragement throughout the applications as well as last year’s leaders for setting a strong example of what it takes to be a college captain.

“The teachers were extremely helpful for me during this entire process,” Jonah said.

“In particular I would like to mention Mr O’Hallahan who was a big reason behind me putting my name forward for the position; he pushed me greatly and gave me the confidence to apply.”

Jake alluded to the high bar that has been set from last year’s college captains.

“They did a great job at giving back to the community, and hopefully I’ll be able to carry that through into this year and be a good role model for the younger kids,” he said.

“All of us are really looking forward to the year ahead.”

Alannah’s invention shines on national stage

During the summer holidays, St Stephen’s Catholic College student Alannah Falvo travelled to Canberra to participate in the 2019 National Questacon Invention Convention. At the end of last year, she was selected as one of 25 students across Australia to participate in this five-day workshop at the Ian Potter Foundation Technology Learning Centre.

Over the course of the five days, Alannah was given the

chance to create a prototype of an invention which incorporated the theme of ‘Liveable Communities’. This theme was all about exploring issues in their local areas and trying to prevent these problems into the future.

Alannah’s invention was a sediment collector and was aimed at reducing sediment-runoff in the Great Barrier Reef. It was intended to not only help the GBR but also the farmers who had lost

their sediment due to flooding, by returning the collected sediment back to farmers to be reused.

Using robotics, computer-aided design (CAD), 3-D printing, workshop machinery and tools as well as other materials, she was able to bring her idea to life along with the support and inspiration she received from various STEM professionals.

“I had an incredible experience and met amazing people

with similar interests as myself,” Alannah said.

“Some of the highlights of my trip were meeting Australian entrepreneurs and getting advice on how to improve my invention as well as tips on how to become a successful entrepreneur.

“I was also interviewed and featured on the local WIN news.”

Alannah said the biggest highlight of all however, was the end of week showcase.

“The fellow delegates and I got the opportunity to present our final prototypes to many guests such as Australian innovators, scientists, entrepreneurs, past delegates and most importantly, his Excellency the Governor General, Sir Peter Cosgrove,” she said. Alannah said she is truly grateful for this opportunity and would recommend to anyone who is interested in STEM to apply.

FNQROC converge on nation’s capital

MAYORS and CEOs from across the far north visited Canberra last week to ensure their communities are not forgotten ahead of the upcoming Federal election.

Cook Shire Council Mayor Peter Scott led the Far North Queensland Regional of Councils (FNQROC) delegation to the Nation's capital to deliver the pre-election wish list.

Chair of FNQROC and Mareeba Shire Mayor Tom Gilmore said the purpose of the delegation was to advocate as a united voice.

“This delegation provides FNQROC with an opportunity to meet with over 20 elected members and nine policy advisors to remind them of who we are, who we represent and advocate for the agreed priorities for the region that are important for

growth,” he said.

“With an election poised for May, this is the most effective way of engaging all our members in a short timeframe to get our collective messages across to both sides of parliament.”

While Mayor Tom Gilmore was unable to attend the delegation, he noted that he was thrilled that the group had met with Prime Minister Scott Morrison.

“As the Chair of FNQROC I am delighted with the response the delegation has received in Canberra,” he said.

“This of course, is not the first trip to Canberra and will not be the last.

“We will continue to have two delegations a year to both Canberra and Brisbane to ensure our community represented by Local Government is recognised and our priorities are understood.

“It is imperative we continue to operate on behalf of our communities, so priorities are considered for State and Federal annual budgets.”

The delegation was given the opportunity to put forward FNQROC's election priorities which include the upgrade of the Kuranda Range Road, water security, expansion of the National Land Transport Network and the future of the Mossman Mill, amongst others.

“As remote Local Government areas in Australia, we are determined to no longer simply be passengers in representing the people and we will continue robust dialogue with Government and Opposition well into the future,” Cr Gilmore said.

When operational, the service will provide residents from the region with 100 per cent bulk billed after-hours in-home GP consultations and telehealth services.

Managing Director Lindsay Stewart said Call My Doctor is set up and ready to go on the

Tablelands; however they are in need of two more doctors to cement the service.

“We have telehealth all sorted for the region, but need a couple of doctors for the in-home service,” he said.

“We are offering $175 to come on directly which I believe is the most an after-hours service has offered to doctors.”

Mr Stewart said the community needs this service.

“We are willing to bring our expertise to the region and sup-

port the health needs; however without a jockey there is no race,” he said.

“Therefore we call upon Doctors of the region to put their hand up for one or more shifts and gain great remuneration and also have the community gratitude that you are supplying a much-needed service.”

Library Lovers Day a hit with locals A strong crowd was on hand at the Mareeba Library to celebrate the annual Library Lovers Day. The community event has been held in libraries throughout Australia since 2007 and is courtesy of the Australian Library and Information Association.

It is an opportunity to bring like-minded people together to interact and socialise through their common interests.

The Mareeba Library’s assistant Prin Stroppe said this year’s Library Lovers Day was a resounding success.

“We were extremely happy with this year’s turn-out,” she said.

“We had a different theme this year which was book and chocolate tasting, which appeared to be a real hit with attendees.

“The aim was to give library users the opportunity to get together and celebrate the important role libraries play in this community, all while giving them the chance to socialise and be introduced to some new books.”

The chocolate and coffee at the event was courtesy of local business Coffee Works.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank Coffee Works for coming on board for this event,” Ms Stroppe said.

“We are speechless with what they provided us and we are extremely appreciative of their support.”

Silent risks of ovarian cancer

Mareeba Hospital General Practitioner Obstetrician Merrilee Frankish is imploring women to consult their doctor if they are experiencing symptoms associated with ovarian cancer.

FEBRUARY marks awareness month for one of Australia’s most silent killers, ovarian cancer.

More than 1600 women will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer in Australia in 2019, including roughly 280 from Queensland.

Of those women diagnosed, approximately only one in two will survive five years post-diagnosis (46%), well below the average of most cancers in Australia.

Ovarian cancer’s dangers lay in its subtlety, with symptoms of

tiredness, lethargy and a sore abdomen regularly dismissed.

Those often unforeseen dangers are why there has been such a heightened level of urgency displayed from Ovarian Cancer Australia, the Cancer Council and an array of medical professionals in the field at ensuring greater awareness of the disease is achieved.

General Practitioner Obstetrician at the Mareeba Hospital Dr Merrilee Frankish said ovarian cancer is an extremely complicated form of cancer.

“Ovarian cancer can be very complex as there is not a specific test to identify it,” she said.

“Cervical screening tests, formerly known as Pap smears, don’t help in diagnosing ovarian cancer which is why it is crucial that women recognise and seek advice on symptoms they are experiencing.

“Early detection is the key.”

Dr Frankish noted that most women with ovarian cancer are diagnosed at an advanced stage.

“Women make a lot of excuses for the symptoms they are going through,” she said.

“They often presume feeling bloated, having a sore stomach, being exhausted or experiencing irregularities in their menstrual cycle are a result of poor diet and lifestyle choices or stress.”

“Sometimes is can just be that; however we need to implore women to not be ashamed to consult their GP if they feel their body isn’t right.

“You aren’t wasting anybody’s time by getting a professional opinion; it could save your life.”

Dr Frankish said she wanted to reassure to women that being diagnosed with ovarian cancer isn’t necessarily a death sentence.

“There are wonderful GP’s in Mareeba who are very competent and knowledgeable about the disease,” she said.

“Added to that, there are fantastic doctors in Cairns who provide exceptional ovarian cancer treatment, and thankfully we’re in a very exciting time where new cancer treatments are being made readily available which will hopefully improve the survival rate.”

Dr Frankish said if women have been experiencing symptoms associated with ovarian cancer such as lower-abdomen pain multiple times a week for a period of four weeks, they should see their GP. Free community wellbeing program – register today Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) is running a Community Wellbeing Participation Program (CWPP) that promotes health, wellbeing, and social inclusion.

“We’re hosting a range of free activities across the region from March to May for TRC residents,” TRC Mayor Joe Paronella said.

The winners of the Mareeba Tennis Club’s family membership the Nason family (Angela, Greg, Mathew, Amy and Jake) with club President Mark Keating, Secretary Penny Thompson and Terry the Tennis Ball.

Club members, families and young tennis players converged on the Mareeba Tennis Club for their Open Day recently.

The day consisted of more than 80 people joining in an afternoon activities and tennis, along with lucky door prizes being drawn every half hour.

The major announcement of the afternoon, the Open Prize, wasn’t drawn because of the inclement weather.

As a result, the club asked families to submit 30 words or less as to why they would love a family membership.

The eventual winner was the Nason family, whose submission stated “We are a family of five, and on tennis we thrive. It's the game we love, we'd love to be a part of your club”.

Angela Nason said she was thrilled to have won the family membership.

“We have just moved to Mareeba, and we wanted to get involved with something that is active and fun for the whole family,” she said.

“The kids just got some racquets for Christmas, so we’re looking forward to coming down and having a hit.”

Mrs Nason said she would like to thank the Mareeba Tennis Club.

“This family membership will be extremely helpful,” she said.

“Our children want to play a number of sports and that starts to add up financially, so this will help immensely with regards to that.”

The Mareeba Tennis Club’s President Mark Keating said he hopes initiatives like Open Day can help participation numbers at the club.

“We felt this would be a great approach to getting people through the gates and playing tennis in Mareeba,” he said.

“We want to make tennis an accessible sport in Mareeba and we pride ourselves on making it a fun experience.

“It can be played by people of any age and we encourage everyone to come down and get involved.”

Cairns fall in close affair

Pre-season rugby league trials were played at the Mossman Showground on Saturday night with the Cairns Foley Shield side up against the ISC Northern Pride in the main game.

Atherton Roosters pair Jermaine Pedro and Ned Blackman represented in the Cairns side along with Ben Cocciolone from the Mareeba Gladiators.

A weight of ball possession

helped the Pride to three first half tries and a handy 14-2 lead at halftime. Cairns came out in the second term with a renewed enthusiasm and were rewarded with two quick tries that narrowed the score to 14-12 with 25 minutes remaining.

Pride’s winning try came in the 70th minute after they had pressured the defence for several sets to crack the line out wide

and finish 18-12 winners. To their credit, Cairns never gave up and went close to saving the points in the closing stages.

Bulls kick off FNQ Football pre-season The Mareeba Bulls have charged into the FNQ Football season with two strong wins in the first weekend of the FNQ Football’s Chairmans Cup held in Mareeba on Saturday.

Six of the seven premier mens sides, as well as a second division side from Atherton took part in mens pre-season competition. Meanwhile in the ladies competition, Mareeba and Stratford along with Edge Hill and a Atherton-Southside combined side made up a four team ladies competition.

The day started early at Borzi Park with the Bulls reserves side including 15-year-olds Josh Leporati, Logan Acha and Daniel Rossi, taking on the Atherton Eagles. After a tight first half the Bulls ran out 4-0 winners to kick off the day.

The reserves then faced the Southside Comets, but went down 4-0 in a tough match. The

Mareeba plays host to Red Dirt Cup

MAREEBA gym CrossFit HBZ 4880 played host to the fourth Red Dirt Cup on Saturday.

CrossFit competitors came from as far as Charters Towers to compete in the day-long team event, with participants from across three divisions testing themselves through a variety of exercises.

CrossFit HBZ 4880 owner and organiser of the Red Dirt Cup Simon Cockrem said Saturday’s event was a resounding

success.

“It was great to see such strong competitor and spectator numbers at the event,” he said.

“We have had the Red Dirt Cup in Atherton in previous years and this is the first year it has been held in Mareeba, and it has been extremely well-supported.”

Cockrem said the event was a great chance for competitors to push themselves as well as build on the camaraderie within

“We had people coming from across North Queensland attending this event which highlights the growing passion for the sport,” he said.

But it was the Bulls who looked the better side and took a 2-0 lead in the halftime break with Dylan Cummings opening the scoring, before a strong take from youngster Quintieri forced the Tigers into a own goal.

In the second period, the Tigers did get a late one back to make it 2-1, but the Bulls held on for a impressive 2-1 win.

All three Bulls sides will take the field again this Saturday in the second instalment of the Chairmans Cup to be held at the Mareeba United Football Club.

Bulls premier mens did not hit the park until the afternoon and faced arch rivals, the Stratford Dolphins, under new coach Perry Krakowczyk. The match also witnessed the return of Jamie Carroll, Alex Plowman and Kane Alderton to the clubs premier mens, while Bronson Koppen made his club debut. Krakowczyk also gave senior debuts to Dean Alterio, Milan Quintieri and Damian Avolio.

The new look Bulls outfit took a while to settle, but dominated much of the match, but it was a late goal from young Alterio that gave the Bulls a 1-0 win.

The Bulls premier ladies side had to wait until 3.15pm to take the field and also took on the Dolphins. The 2018 grand finalists played well and dominated the Dolphins, but went down 1-0 as they were unable to convert a handful of chances before the away side took the lead late with

Atherton 1st Grade travelled to Innisfail to dust off some cobwebs after a few weeks of washouts in the Cricket Far North competition. Cassowary Coast won the toss and elected to bat on a good wicket.

Chasing 103, Atherton were forced to work hard for their runs against some tidy bowling from the Cyclones. Dan Parnell’s 26 went at a steady pace using his experience to put the team in a good position and Tom Boorman (34 not-out) and Fred Pittorino (24 not-out) finished the job, reaching the total in 28 overs.
