Schools unite to shine the light on mental health
IN what has become an annual tradition for two local schools, students took to the field last week with an aim to bowl out the stigma associated with mental health. The Dr Mark Bestmann Memorial Shield Cricket Match is played in October each year between Mareeba State High School and St Stephen’s Catholic College students. With October being Mental Health Month, the cricket match makes a positive difference to the mental health and wellbeing of our communities. Together the schools aim to raise awareness about mental health and stomp out the stigma, all while having fun and playing a game they love. Each year, around one in every five Australians will experience a mental illness, just under half will experience a mental disorder in their lifetime and one in four young people met the criteria for having a probable mental illness. Almost twothirds of people living with a mental illness don’t seek professional help. Mental Health Month is all about awareness. It encourages all of us to think about our mental health and wellbeing, regardless of whether we may have a lived experience or not. It also gives us the opportunity to understand the importance of mental health in our everyday lives and a chance to learn how to look out for the people around us.
