Schools unite to shine the light on mental health

IN what has become an annual tradition for two local schools, students took to the field last week with an aim to bowl out the stigma associated with mental health.

The Dr Mark Bestmann Memorial Shield Cricket Match is played in October each year between Mareeba State High School and St Stephen’s Catholic College students.

With October being Mental Health Month, the cricket match makes a positive difference to the mental health and wellbeing of our communities. Together the schools aim to raise awareness about mental health and stomp out the stigma, all while having fun and playing a game they love.

Each year, around one in every five Australians will experience a mental illness, just under half will experience a mental disorder in their lifetime and one in four young people met the criteria for having a probable mental illness. Almost twothirds of people living with a mental illness don’t seek professional help.

Mental Health Month is all about awareness. It encourages all of us to think about our mental health and wellbeing, regardless of whether we may have a lived experience or not.

It also gives us the opportunity to understand the importance of mental health in our everyday lives and a chance to learn how to look out for the people around us.

Students take to the stage

PUBLIC speaking is a daunting exercise no matter your age, which makes the achievements of the five young men and women who presented at the Mareeba Rotary Club’s annual Youth Speaks Competition all the more impressive.

The competition saw year six students from schools across the region give a short presentation on a topic of their choosing.

Everything from home-life to nature conservation was touched on in their speeches, with a winner decided upon by a two-person judging panel.

Youth Director of the Mareeba Rotary Club Stephen Gear said the competition encourages young people to become more comfortable when speaking in front of large crowds.

“A number of these students will want to become school leaders, and this event is a great introduction for those who may not have much experience with public speaking,” he said.

“As this competition is a free speech format, giving them the opportunity to choose their own topic allows the students to

be more at ease and you can see that in the quality of their presentations.

“Initiatives such as Youth Speaks are of such importance as it doesn’t just help the students throughout their schooling years, but also later in life.”

Mareeba State School boasted the best presenters on the night as their students Ella Daven and Isabel Morris took home runner-up and first place respectively.

Winner Isabel Morris alluded to the numerous benefits that Youth Speaks provides.

“I wasn’t really interested in public speaking last year, but I’m really glad I decided to give it a go as it has taught me a lot,” she said.

“I would like to see other people try it, it doesn’t matter if you win or not because it is such a great experience either way.”

Rotary exchange student Philipp Walker capped off the night’s presentations with a speech and PowerPoint slide that gave audience members an insight into his home country of Switzerland.

Principal recognised for school excellence While St Stephen’s Catholic College in Mareeba is just 13 years old, its academic achievements under the careful guidance of respected principal Ida Pinese are impressive.

Mrs Pinese – who was a finalist in the Queensland College of Teachers Excellent Leadership in Teaching and Learning Awards last week – sets high expectations of her staff and 550plus students “to perform at their very best”. And it has paid off.

“All of our Year 12 students last year finished with their Queensland Certificate of Education and we were the secondhighest Catholic high school in the state, with 40.48 per cent of graduating students achieving OP1-5,” Mrs Pinese said.

Mrs Pinese, who began teaching in 1975, worked in various state high schools before becoming the first deputy principal at St Stephen’s, in 2007. Over the next six years, Mrs Pinese was instrumental in building the small ru-

ral school’s curriculum as it grew from its initial enrolment of 40 students.

“I knew we’d have to be a school for all seasons,” Mrs Pinese said. “Academic and vocational outcomes are just as important in a rural area, so we’re trying hard to punch above our weight.”

Taking on the role of principal in 2013, Mrs Pinese said her most important role as the school’s leader had been to ensure that a culture of excellence was formed and that this culture was maintained as the school grew and new staff arrived.

“Our school has always been about family and community and that was easy when there were just 40 students – the challenge has been maintaining that as we grew over the years,” Mrs Pinese said.

Her Catholic Education colleagues, Dr Sally Towns and Simon Vaughan, praised Mrs Pinese as a “leader of excel-

lence” who maintains her teaching currency while mentoring new and beginning teachers, ensuring quality teaching and learning outcomes for St Stephen’s students.

“Mrs Pinese has established a culture of positive accountability where constructive feedback between colleagues is a part of the everyday work of people and where failure to deliver agreed outcomes is unacceptable,” they wrote in their nomination for the award.

“I was very honoured to be a finalist but I know that, all over Queensland, there are other leaders who, every day, try their hardest to do their best,” Mrs Pinese said.

The QCT Awards recognise teachers from all schooling sectors, across all subjects. Mrs Pinese attended the awards ceremony in Brisbane last week and while she might not have won the overall award, she is already a winner in our community.

MAREEBA farmer Frank Quintieri recently returned from a trip to Brisbane where he auctioned off lychees to raise money for Motor Neurone Disease.

Held at the Brisbane markets, Mr Quintieri said it was a great opportunity to give to a worthy cause, a cause he said hits very close to home.

“I spoke about doing something like this with our marketing manager John Trimboli from Romeo’s Marketing Queensland,” he said.

“I decided I would like to raise money for a good cause, and Motor Neurone Disease is something that means a lot to me personally. My grandfather passed away from the disease,

so it was something I felt motivated to do.”

Mr Quintieri noted how happy he was with the auction’s proceedings.

“We were able to auction off $11,000 worth of lychees which was fantastic,” he said.

“We raised another $300 via our sausage sizzle so our overall total was definitely more

than we expected.

“The support from everyone was amazing.”

Mr Quinteiri also took time to give thanks to those who aided such a successful auction.

“I would like to acknowledge John and Debbie Trimboli for all of their help, we wouldn’t have been able to do it without them,” he said.

Mayors lobby for action

Determined not to be left behind, regional Mayor’s have extended an open invitation to State and Federal leaders to visit far north Queensland...

Ten of the 13-member Councils of the Far North Queensland Regional Organisation of Councils (FNQROC) recently travelled to Brisbane where they had the opportunity to inform and influence the State's decision makers.

The group advocated as a united voice, covering over 18% of Queensland.

Chair of FNQROC and Mayor of Mareeba Shire, Cr Tom Gilmore explained that delegations to government are important to ensure that people of the north are not forgotten when it comes to government planning and budgetary processing.

“This trip offered the opportunity for Mayors to raise matters which were of common interest for our 13 Shires and also matters which are unique to their own situations,” Cr Gilmore said.

“We had the opportunity to meet with over 21 elected members and three policy advisors over two days, reminding them of who we are, where we are from and advocating the projects which are important to the growth of the region.”

The delegation met with Members of Parliament and the Opposition, covering a diverse range of matters including enterprise bargaining, the Kuranda Range road upgrade, roads of

strategic importance, the Gilbert River irrigation scheme, the Mossman Mill and the introduction of the waste levy and the impact it will have on Councils.

“Furthermore, it was an effective way of engaging all our members in a short timeframe to get our collective messages across – this could not be achieved by one council alone. It also provides the networking opportunity and opens the door for Councils to go back on their own to advocate for those local community projects,” Cr Gilmore said.

"We would like to thank all the Ministers, Shadow Ministers and staff for taking the time to meet with our delegation and follow up on opportunities to progress our projects or resolve issues. We look forward to working with both sides of government into the future.”

The recent delegation to Brisbane follows closely on the heels of a recent trip to Canberra where the group met with Federal Ministers and the Opposition to discuss similar issues and opportunities.

Cr Gilmore said FNQROC anticipates taking a delegation to both Canberra and Brisbane twice a year into the future.

Mario Calanna launches book

MARIO Calanna is a name that has been synonymous with the region’s health industry for decades, and he has added further credence to his stellar reputation with the launching of his book Design a Good Life.

Mr Calanna, who is the Founder of chain pharmaceutical company Calanna Whole Health Pharmacies (formerly Calanna Pharmacies); said writing a book was a goal he set for himself in 2015.

“I wanted to summarise and share the story of my family from the early days of migrant Australia to cane-farm ownership, as well as my own family life in the pharmacy industry,” he said.

Mr Calanna said the basis of the book revolves around the Seven Elements of the Whole Health Wellness Wheel, of which are leadership, family, financial, fun/service, physical health, faith/spiritual and emotional wellbeing.

“It relates to how the balance of each of these elements plays an important part in forming each of us into the best of which we can be,” he said.

Mr Calanna’s inspiration to enter the pharmaceutical industry was one he said was born out of wanting to communicate and help people day to day.

MSC’s recognition for environmental impact

THE Mareeba Shire Council were given due recognition for their excellent work on the Mareeba Landfill Surface Waters Project as they received a highly commended in the IPWEA Queensland’s Award Category for Environment and Sustainability.

The project, which rehabilitated landfill landscape to improve stormwater treatment, was acknowledged for its positive environmental impact.

Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Tom Gilmore said it was great to be recognised for the project.

“The surface waters project has had a positive envi-

ronmental impact, reducing the sediment loading moving offsite into the waterways,” Cr Gilmore said.

“Prior to the surface waters project, the sediment would be suspended in the water column for many weeks at a time due to the dispersive nature of the soils.

Cr Gilmore said it confirms their commitment to the environment – to maintain, in a sustainable manner, Council’s wastewater infrastructure to minimise environmental impact.

“We are always looking for innovative ways to be more environmentally sustainable,”

he said.

The surface waters project is just one of many similar environmental initiatives courtesy of MSC, of which includes the Mareeba Sewerage Treatment Plant Upgrade, the Upgrade of Transfer Station and the works on Mareeba Bicentennial Lakes waterway – much to the delight of the Mayor.

“As you can see, Council is very environmentally aware and considers options wherever possible when undertaking works to be more environmentally friendly,” Cr Gilmore said.

Lion Ken celebrates 50 years of service KEN Tait celebrated 50 years with the Lions Club of Atherton at a special function in his honour last week.

Ken is the local club’s longest serving member, who joined October 22, 1968. Over his time with the Club he has held the positions of president, secretary and treasurer, as well as the portfolios of Youth of the Year, Lions Mints, Project Chair, Lion Tamer and Tail Twister – a position he still holds today.

Ken has also served at District level as Deputy District Governor.

Ken was honoured with Life Membership in 1993. He received the James D Richardson

Award in 2007 in recognition of services rendered to the Club and in 2017 was awarded a Melvin Jones Fellowship Award, the highest honour bestowed on a member of Lions Clubs International.

Fellow long-time member Don Scheffler remembers the year Ken was president in 1975 to 1976 when he became the only president in the history of the club who has ever had to pay up under the 100% rule – which is that the president who has a 100% attendance of members at a meeting has to shout for all – and there were about 45 of them at the time.

Top award for rural firefighter THE state’s top performing firefighters were recognised in Brisbane recently as it played host to the QFES’s 2018 Commissioner’s Awards for Excellence, of which Far North Queensland was well-represented.

Maxwell Hubner, who is the Second Officer of the Paddys Green Rural Fire Brigade, was one such fire-fighter who was acknowledged for his valuable work servicing the community, as he took home the evening’s Highly Commended in the category of Performance.

Fire Brigade and his positive impact on the community.

Mr Hubner, 68, alluded to what winning the award meant to him.

“It was mind-blowing,” he said.

“It is a huge honour and something I didn’t expect at all.

“I was representing the Cairns Peninsula and was one of only two people that received personal awards, which was very humbling.”

Missing Gallery Mareeba set to celebrate man Police are appealing for public assistance to help locate a 35-year-old man reported missing from Mareeba.

Adam Piltz was last seen at an address on Malcolm Close in Mareeba on October 17 and has not been seen by friends or family since.

Police hold concerns for his welfare as this behaviour is out of character.

Preliminary investigations indicate Adam may have been travelling in the Babinda National Park on October 20 as he made his way to Gympie.

Adam is described as Caucasian in appearance, is approximately 188cm tall, of a large build with auburn hair and a beard.

He may be travelling in a white 2010 Toyota Hilux dualcab with Queensland registration 431-RGY and towing a trailer.

Byrnes Street water main nears completion WITH work on the Byrnes Street water main upgrade nearing completion, the Mareeba Shire Council is pleased with the project’s progression.

The $2.5 million upgrade is scheduled to be finished by Christmas.

“The pipeline installation will finish in two weeks,” Cr Tom Gilmore said.

“That’s followed by the full car park restoration reseal and landscaping, which is set to be completed by mid-November.”

THE Malanda Fire Department responded to a vehicle fire at a Byrnes Street car park last Sunday night.

The vehicle, which was engulfed in flames, was a result of

an electrical fault.

Malanda Fire Department Lieutenant Roland Mollenhagen said his crew were tending to a fire in Mareeba when they received a call to respond to the

vehicle fire.

“We had the vehicle fire under control very quickly, putting it out within 90 seconds,” he said.

“The owner was near the vehicle at the time of the fire, and tried to retrieve some personal belongings and in doing so sustained injuries in the form of burns. “Triple-0 was dialled immediately and he was treated thereafter.”

Mareeba Senior Constable Aleda Day said the incident was not of a suspicious nature.

“We aren’t investigating the matter any further,” she said.

MSC adopts Annual Report MAREEBA Shire Council adopted its Annual Report for the last financial year with an unqualified audit at last Wednesday’s Council meeting.

Chief Executive Officer Peter Franks said there were only positive comments following the last audit and Council was in a stable financial position.

“This year has seen Council further consolidate its financial position. The targets, set in the long-term financial plan, have

been met yet once again and are within all Departments of Local Government, Racing and Multicultural Affairs sustainability ratio ranges,” Mr Franks said.

Mayor Tom Gilmore said it was pleasing to once again report to the community on a positive and successful year.

“This report says to me that both Councillors and staff are as one in the development of this organisation and effectively the community,” Cr Gilmore said.

Infrastructure repair contracts awarded Due to the extent of damage across the region caused by flood waters earlier this year, the Queensland Reconstruction Authority (QRA) declared the event a natural disaster, triggering funding arrangements which provide Local Governments with assistance to reinstate essential infrastructure.

In the Mareeba Shire, a number of roads and bridges which had been damaged beyond immediate repair were identified and assessed by a contractor.

After calling for suitably qualified and experienced contractors for the reinstatement and repair of infrastructure, Council last week awarded contracts for

two tenderers, subject to QRA approval.

HEH Civil Pty Ltd was awarded the contract to replace James Creek Crossing while Gregg Construction Pty Ltd was awarded a contract to reinstate a number of stormwater drains, road shoulders and carriageways to pre-existing conditions as part of the Mareeba and eastern roads package.

Council is working with the QRA and contractors to expedite the works as quickly as possible.

Mayor Tom Gilmore understands residents’ frustration and thanks the community for their patience while this protracted process is carried out.

“Council is moving as quickly as possible, however, these arrangements are subject to government funding administered by the QRA, and as a Council, we need to follow this process with due diligence to ensure these funds are secured to repair the infrastructure,” Cr Gilmore said.

Council is processing further claims of damaged infrastructure submitted to the QRA for approval and hopes respective tenders will be awarded before the end of the year, with a special meeting to be held on Wednesday 7 November 2018 to award three more contracts.

Mareeba in desperate need of a new library Mareeba Library, the heart of our local community, is a building in desperate need of expansion.

It needs to happen so that staff can continue to offer vital resources, programs and services to Mareeba residents, both young and old.

Since the beginning of this year, my son and I have been regular attendees at various programs facilitated by the Mareeba Library Staff. Held at the Mareeba Library, through funding provided by First Five Forever, a Queensland State Government initiative.

These have included Baby Rhymetime, which has a regular following of parents and young children; a special presentation of Rhymetime and Storytime with Morgan Schatz Blackrose, professional storyteller, which was well attended by over 30 parents, caregivers and children; and a presentation by Laura Nelson, local speech pathologist, exploring how to maximize a child’s learning potential and language skills through book-

sharing.

These are just a few of the creative, engaging and literacycentred programs happening at our local library on a regular basis.

The library becomes a hub of activity for weekly storytime, craft, maths tutoring and tech-savvy sessions, which are facilitated by enthusiastic library staff and supported by community members both young and old. When observing library staff moving shelving, rearranging furniture and trying their best to accommodate large groups in tiny spaces as comfortably as possible during the aforementioned workshops and activities, it has been brought to my attention that the Mareeba Library is in desperate need of expansion/relocation and purposeful reinvigoration, in order to efficiently deliver library services and programs, which are central to improving educational outcomes and increasing connectedness and wellbeing in our community.

The Mareeba Shire Council Operational Plan for 2018-2019 states that Council will “review (the) Mareeba Library premises for efficient service delivery and to meet the most important community needs.”

It is my observation that the great lack of public space, workshop/meeting areas, room

for functional shelving and displays, and adequate staff workspaces must be rectified to ensure that programs, such as those detailed above, as well as loan services, can continue to be offered and expanded by our library to enhance the literacy and numeracy, digital literacy, child, youth and adult education, fun, recreation and entertainment needs of our community.

According to the 2016 Census, the population of Mareeba township was 11,079, a figure which one could assume has grown in two years and will continue to grow into the future.

The Queensland Public Library Standards and Guidelines – Library Buildings Standard (2009) outlines how our current library building fails to meet two key performance indicators: the minimum floor area standard for its current and projected population and any additional functions, as well as providing adequate and safe accessibility for all library clients.

The Library Buildings Standard (2009) states that calculating a library’s minimum floor area involves three components: base floor area for minimal library activities such as collections, staff, public seating, utilities, foyer and toilets; additional functional areas based on local needs, such as meeting/ training rooms, youth space,

outdoor/courtyard areas, toy library; as well as loading area for main branch/headquarters functions.

Based on a township population of approximately 12,000 people, which doesn't take into account future growth, visitors or those commuting to work or shop in Mareeba (factors which according to the Library Buildings Standard (2009) should be taken into account), the minimum floor space of our library should be 568m2. The Queensland Public Libraries Statistical Bulletin 2016-2017 states that the current floor space of Mareeba Library is 485m2; however, only 235m2 is accessible to the public, leaving little to no room for displays, workshop spaces, seating areas, staff workspaces and ease of access to library collections.

It is also worth noting that our library has 8866 active borrowers, and during 20162017, there were 5696 attendees at 453 programs/events held at the library, for which there are no designated meeting rooms (Queensland Public Libraries Statistical Bulletin 2016-2017).

This emphasizes the need for designated workshop/meeting space, which is clearly being utilized by a significant number of Mareeba residents. The lack of functional space is further highlighted when comparing

the Mareeba Library building to that of Atherton, whose 2016 population was recorded as 7331 (2016 Census), and whose library floor space totals 678m2, with a public access space of 540m2, including designated meeting rooms.

This is possibly due to the fact that the last major refurbishment of Atherton Library occurred in 2017, compared to that of Mareeba Library in 1985 (Queensland Public Libraries Statistical Bulletin 20162017). Clearly, our library is long overdue for expansion, revitalization and attention.

Finally, the Library Buildings Standard (2009) also states that libraries must have convenient off-street parking for clients and staff, another element lacking with our current library location.

Designated parking, away from the main street, would provide a safe access point to the library, particularly for young families and the elderly who regularly access this cultural and community hub.

For these reasons, it is essential that action be taken to transform the Mareeba Library into an accessible, sustainable and functional public space.

Coalition MPs from the key sugar-growing regions of Queensland want to take the chop to India’s subsidised sugar, and they’re calling on the Trade Minister to act immediately in seeking World Trade Organisation intervention.

The sugar-block, consisting of Queensland MPs Warren Entsch, George Christensen, Michelle Landry, Ken O’Dowd, Keith Pitt and Llew O’Brien, are also calling on the Queensland Labor Government to introduce a food and fibre tariff to reduce power prices for growers.

Member for Leichardt Warren Entsch said the sugar industry demands action.

“We cannot sit idly by and watch this quintessential Queensland industry have the guts ripped out of it due to conscious decisions made by a foreign nation,” he said.

With genuine concerns surrounding the survival of the Sugar Cane industry, it is crucial that key political figures in sugar cane heartlands continue to speak up and make significant strides in terms of policy to ensure irreparable damage for sugar cane farmers is avoided.

Will digital licences be available in QLD? Queensland motorists would soon be using their smartphones to show their driver licences under a new trial welcomed by RACQ. Queensland Transport Minister Mark Bailey has announced that the state might go digital next year when it comes to drivers licenses.

In today’s digital age it makes

sense as we move into a digital wallet where your phone or digital device will replace driver’s licenses and ID cards.

This major shakeup will make every driver accountable and be fined if they break the rules.

The electronic version of the driver licence, which was reported recently, would be trialled in Queensland and would allow

drivers to view, update and renew their licence as well as provide it to police when requested.

RACQ Head of Technical and Safety Policy Steve Spalding said this kind of technology would be an added convenience for drivers.

“Many of us are already cashless and using smartphones to pay for our goods and do our

banking so this is clearly the next step,” Mr Spalding said.

“If we can get the security right – as we have with internet banking, this will really make it easier for many drivers who don’t want to carry so many cards around.

“Many motorists are still going to want to stick to traditional licences, and that’s okay, but see-

ing as the technology is out there and being trialled down south – we’d look forward to its trial in Queensland,” Minister for Transport and Main Roads Mark Bailey told Nine News the State Government would launch the trial next year. “We’re moving into a digital wallet so that basically means your smart phone or your device

can hold your ID or your driver licence,” Mr Bailey said.

“You can present your credentials without giving out your address or your date of birth.”

The trial follows a successful program in New South Wales, but there are no plans to phase out physical licences.

The State’s peak motoring body has revealed many regional Queensland towns and cities had this week recorded the highest petrol prices ever seen.

RACQ spokesperson Lucinda Ross said drivers in Mareeba, Atherton and Cairns had felt hip pocket pain as prices reached 167 cents per litre (cpl).

“Records have tumbled in these regional towns and motorists are left feeling the squeeze,” Ms Ross said.

Cairns drivers were also slugged at the pump, Ms Ross said, when the all-time record

daily average hit 159.7cpl.

“While the rising global oil price and softening Aussie dollar is largely to blame for these prices, some servos are charging above what we think is fair,” she said.

“There is 7cpl difference between the cheapest and the most expensive fuel in North Queensland so motorists need to let their purses do the talking.

“It might not seem like much of a saving but choosing the cheaper retailers will send a strong message to the others to compete for your business and can

save your household hundreds of dollars over the year.”

Ms Ross said more regional centres were set to follow suit and Queenslanders would see more records smashed over the coming days and weeks.

“It’s why we’re keen to see the real-time fuel price trial come online in December. When it does, we need drivers to jump on board, and use the apps and websites available to get the best deal at the bowser.”

Affordable housing in Mareeba has received a much needed boost thanks to local investors, the Setford family, with the new Earl Street Boarding House set to be officially opened next week.

The design and layout of the new Boarding House Mareeba is masterminded by local developer, Neil Setford.

A new way of living Maintenance Engineer Neil Setford’s new Boarding House in Mareeba is receiving recognition for its design and purpose.

1. Roughly chop six of the Tim Tams into large pieces and set aside.

Place the plain biscuits into a food processor and blitz until they have just broken up, then add the remaining whole Tim Tams and blitz for 5 seconds. Place the crushed biscuits into a large bowl and set aside.

3. Pour the condensed milk into a small saucepan and add the butter and cocoa. Cook over a low heat stirring occasionally until the butter has melted and combined with the other ingredients.

4. Pour the melted ingredients into the bowl with the crushed biscuits and add the coconut. Working quickly, mix the ingredients together. Pour the mixture into your prepared tin and flatten the surface with the back of a spoon.

5. Break the milk chocolate into squares and place it into a microwave safe bowl. Cook in the microwave until it’s just melted.

Pour over the top of the slice and sprinkle the Tim Tams you set aside earlier over the top.

College boys Futsal success The U15 St Stephen’s Catholic College boys Futsal team recently travelled to Brisbane to compete in the Federation of Australian Futsal – Oceania School Championships, held from October 19 to 21.

After finishing in first place at the Far North Queensland School Titles in Term 2 this year, the team competed in the U16 division at the championships.

Under the watchful eye of Coach Luch Avolio, the boys

went through the tournament undefeated going into the grand final match in first position. But unfortunately after a successful three days, they lost to Ferguson Football Academy 6-3.

College teacher Deanne Morrow said “The boys must be acknowledged on their efforts and behaviour. They displayed the highest respect on and off the court with officials, other teams and parents giving them glowing reports on both

their talent and sportsmanship.”

Even though the boys finished in second place, they took home all of the three prestigious awards of the tournament for the U16 age group.

Damien Avolio was named the most valuable player of the tournament, Milan Quintieri goalkeeper of the tournament and Deane Alterio was the highest goal scorer of the entire tournament.

FORMER Mareeba State High student and North Queensland Cowboys utility Ben Hampton returned to his roots last Wednesday to host coaching clinics as well as speak at the school’s annual Sports Presentation Night.

The Sports Presentation Night, which is in its 15th year, recognises and celebrates the

sporting achievements of the school’s outstanding young athletes. Awards handed out on the night included the junior and senior Sportsperson of the Year, the Pierre de Coubertin Award, Sporting Spirit Awards, Sports Captain of the Year and the Gold Award.

The major awards went to –

Sportsperson of the Year: Reilly Cifuentes (intermediate winner), Jace Cureton (junior) and Rachel Brcko (Senior). Pierre de Coubertin Award: Orla Weaver.

Sporting Spirit Award: Kara Trimble. Sports Captain of the Year: Danika Prizmic and the Gold Award went to cricketer Chris Adams.

Students bowl out mental health stigma ST Stephen’s Catholic College and Mareeba State High School students donned the whites to take part in the second annual Dr Mark Bestmann Memorial Shield Cricket Match at St Stephen’s oval last Thursday.

The annual cricket match, which is in remembrance of esteemed local doctor Mark Bestmann who passed away in 2016, aims to help raise awareness for mental health.

Despite only being in its infancy, organiser and MSHS teacher Tim Ralph is proud of the enormous strides the charity match has made in its short tenure.

“We started this a couple of years ago to raise awareness for mental health and remove some of the stigma associated with it,” he said.

“It initially started at Mareeba State High in the form of a student versus teacher match, however I think it’s been great that we are now able to bring the two schools together. That has been really beneficial in getting the word out even more about this worthy cause.”

With sponsorship figures up from last year, Ralph noted how thankful he was for the immense support this day has received from the wider community.

“There are a lot of sponsors that came on board this year and we’re continuing to try and build it up,” he said.

“Special mention goes to Trisha Spry and Ray White Ru-

ral Mareeba, who donated to the cause as well as scored the match.

“Next year we are expecting even more sponsors to get involved and through that we’ll be able to include a girl’s competition alongside the boys.”

Fellow organiser and St Stephen’s teacher Paul McLellan largely echoed Ralph’s sentiments, alluding to the importance of open discussions regarding one’s mental health.

“We have to reinforce that it’s OK not to be OK,” he said.

“I know Mareeba High does a lot for Mental Health Week as do we at St Stephen’s, so Tim and I just thought this would be a great way to honour Mark all while raising awareness.

“Mark was an avid cricketer and a strong advocate for the Mareeba Cricket Club, so we feel having a match in his name is a great sign of respect.”

Dr Bestmann’s wife Margie Bestmann was ecstatic with the day’s proceedings and the message it represents.

“For me it’s really important to see day’s like today, as it acts as a reminder to focus on our mental health,” she said.

“Seeing the students out here interacting and having fun is a big part of what this is about, for some of them this is their first time playing cricket, however it’s great that they’re out there having a go.

“It’s crucial that we use community initiatives such as this so

“The club has concerns regarding the restructuring of the competition,” Mareeba Gladiators President John Arcidiacono said.

“Under the amalgamation, there will only be one or two representatives voicing concerns on behalf of 11 clubs, and with the competition consisting of teams ranging from Tully to Mossman, and up to Atherton, how are they going to address everyone’s issues?”

Questions loom over league amalgamation WITH news surfacing last week of a likely amalgamation between the Cairns District Rugby League, Cairns District Junior Rugby League, Innisfail District Junior Rugby League and Eacham Junior Rugby League, pertinent questions are being raised about the possible implications it may have on the region’s rugby league competitions as a whole, and more specifically, the Mareeba Gladiators.

Coming off what was a disappointing 2018 A-Grade campaign for the historic club, of which consisted of a secondlast place finish, the amalgamation comes at a difficult time as the Gladiators appear to be at a

board member Nigel Tillett was adamant nothing of the sort was on the agenda.

“That is not the purpose of the restructure, if anything it is the complete opposite,” he said.

“This is ultimately about strengthening the competition and cutting the number of teams will fail to do that.

“We believe the amalgamation will be for the betterment of rugby league in the Far North.”

While the amalgamation is an issue within itself, Arcidiacono also noted the need for change within the club to ensure a successful 2019.

“The problems relating to the culture of the club is something

we are looking to rectify,” he said.

“The issues we’re facing at the moment have been there for a while now, however we’re confident a fresh coach with a strong level of commitment will change it, providing he is prepared to make the hard decisions.”

“Our entire operation as a club has to get better, but I know returning the Gladiators to their rightful position in the competition is something we can achieve.”

Arcidiacono said there are four candidates in the running for the A-Grade head coaching job, with the appointment to be announced within the next week.
