Baton-bearers names released

Thirty-five Tablelanders – and 15 people from Cooktown – will be sharing the responsibility of delivering the Queens’ Baton to its destination on the Gold Coast next year for the Commonwealth Games in April.

The local baton-bearers are all prominent community members that have been picked from nominations to take on the honour of running with the baton when it comes to the region on March 14, exactly one year after the relay started in the UK at Buckingham Palace.

Mareeba Shire Councillor Nipper Brown said he is immensely proud of the Shire’s baton-bearers

and the role they will take when the Queen’s Baton comes to town.

“Many have dedicated their lives to improving the lives of others, some have accomplished great feats and others are working towards realising their dreams,” he said.

“I encourage you to support these great people in our community, and to share a memorable moment with the Queen’s Baton yourselves.”

Connie Martens was nominated for her work setting up the Mareeba Netball Association in 2010. She said the opportunity was “once in a lifetime”.

“It’s really exciting,”

she said. “It’s such an honour to be chosen.”

14 year old Tyler Ius from St Stephen’s Catholic College was nominated by Mareeba Shire Council for his success in junior football and Sonya Alba-Miller was nominated for her achievements in trail running and the Great Wheelbarrow Race.

Across the community, hundreds of people will get the opportunity to engage with the Baton as it spends quality time in the region.

The baton starts its Australian journey on 25 December 2017, 100 days before the Opening Ceremony.

For one month during the school summer holi-

days, the Queen’s Baton will visit major events, iconic landmarks and children’s hospitals.

From Canberra on 25 January 2018, the Baton will switch gears to a traditional Relay and be carried by great Australians through QBR celebration communities around the country.

Street level and community celebration details will be announced on 17 November.

Since its launch the Baton has inspired athletes and fans across Africa, the Caribbean, the Americas and Europe. Currently it is in Malaysia and is set to visit the remaining 15 Commonwealth nations in

Asia and Oceania before arriving in Brisbane on Christmas Eve. It will be 60 years since a Baton first carried Her Majesty’s message to athletes of the Commonwealth at the Cardiff 1958 British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Wales.

TRC Mayor Joe Paronella said: “I am immensely proud of our baton-bearers and the role they will take when the Queen’s Baton comes to the Tablelands.”

Minister for the Commonwealth Games Kate Jones said the baton-bearers were in for the experience of a lifetime – one that they will cherish for the rest of their lives.

Boxing gym forced to close

Yungaburra Boxing Gym has closed its doors to the general public after 14 years after failing to negotiate a suitable contract with owners of the Memorial Hall on Barrine Road.

Ashley Cupitt is well known locally as a boxing coach, having trained kids and adults through the stages for the past 40 years. He said he is “gutted” the gym has closed its doors.

“We’ve had to move out of the hall and into a lean-to on the side of the building where we can only have two people in there at a time, so for now we’re just going to be training our competition boxers,” he said.

“It’s pretty sad, but we failed to negotiate a deal with the new people who took over the lease of the grounds.”

Up to 20 people a night use the gym for boxing training and some of Mr Cupitt’s protégés have gone on to win state and national titles.

Keen to address juvenile crime in the region, Mr Cupitt used the club to mentor troubled youths in the community, helping them channel their energy into sport.

“There’s nowhere else for us to go in Yungaburra,” said Mr Cupitt who has spent the past five months trying to negotiate a way forward and find alternative premises.

goes up every year and we can’t afford to pay it.”

Mr Cupitt is currently training Michael ‘Mick the Weapon’ Perks ahead of his national title bid next month. Training will shut down for Christmas and may mean the end of the gym altogether.

ran a boxing club in Atherton during the late 1980s and early 1990s and went on to volunteer his time at Lotus Glenn Correctional Centre training inmates.

He was named Citizen of

the Year in 2001. Mr Cupitt said the closure may mean he can now concentrate his efforts on building a boxing academy and rehabilitation centre for people with brain and sports injuries.

“It’s a dream of mine, but probably something that will happen once I have won the lotto!”

$60m grant to benefit local projects Local councils will benefit from the Queensland Government’s $60 million Infrastructure grants program released last week.

Mayor Tom Gilmore welcomed the announcement of receiving almost $1.5 million for installation of a new water main on Byrnes Street, Mareeba from Rankin Street to Lloyd Street.

“The funding received of $1.5 million confirmed today by The Honourable Mark Furner is a most welcome contribution to the cost of the upgrade to the Mareeba water trunk on Byrnes Street,” he said.

The grant is part of the Palaszczuk Government’s commitment to creating jobs and improving the liveability of communities in the Far North region with the approval of grant funding of more than $9 million for local infrastructure projects.

Mayor Tom Gilmore said projects of great scale such as this would simply not be possible without support from the State Government.

“It is grants such as this that are being made by the Queensland Government that make these critical projects of pipeline maintenance and upgrades possible without making a serious burden on ratepayers,” he said.

ter supply to the Mareeba CBD, the community would be unsustainable particularly due to the potential impacts on the businesses and services in the CBD, to their employees and their customers.”

Mayor Tom Gilmore said the upgrade would allow for future sustainable business growth to meet the increasing demand for goods and services not only in Mareeba, but the wider Mareeba Shire and rural and remote communities.

“The pipeline in question has been in place for many years, and Council believes that it is imperative that it be replaced due to the fact that its usage is reaching the end of its life and may fracture which would cause serious property damage and disruption to businesses in Mareeba’s main street,” he said.

Tablelands Regional Council will also be receiving $2,748,360 for construction of a state-ofthe-art community education, training and disaster coordination centre in Atherton and Cook Shire Council will receive almost $451,000 for the upgrade of two vital water reservoirs essential for both residential water supply and firefighting.

KUR-World Transport Infrastructure

Kennedy Highway

Site Access

The Kennedy Highway will provide the main road access to KUR-World from Cairns and facilitate its access to the wider Tablelands. Within the KUR-World EIS Study Area, the Kennedy Highway can be divided into two distinct sections: • Kuranda Range Section; and • Kuranda to Mareeba Section The Kuranda Range section of the Kennedy Highway provides the primary access to Cairns from Kuranda, Mareeba and the Cape York Region. The Kuranda Range Section comprises 11km that traverses the Macalister Range between Smithfield and Kuranda. It features a constrained geometric alignment with tight vertical and horizontal curves. As a result, it has a 60-80km/h speed limit, limited property accesses and a few short overtaking and slow vehicle lanes. There are currently an estimated 9000vpd (vehicles per day) using the Kuranda Range section.

Access to the KUR-World site will be provided in stages. Access during Stage 1A will be via the existing Barnwell Road access.

Stage 1A operations will be limited to approximately 21 Queenslander Lots providing tourist accommodation, a small glamping experience and the operation of the Farm Theme Park; all generating limited traffic volumes during this stage. KURWorld intends to upgrade the existing Barnwell Road and provide required improvements to Myola Road.

The Kuranda to Mareeba section is a two-lane two-way road comprising 36 km. This section features an 80-100km/h speed limit with varied cross sections, typically ranging in width between 8 to 12 metres with several overtaking opportunities. There are currently approximately 6000vpd using this section, with a high proportion of heavy vehicles.

Access to KUR-World from Stage Emergency Access Emergency Access 1B onwards will be via a new road link to the site. This road link would intersect Myola Road opposite the Internal Road Network current intersection with Kuranda Heights Road and would be constructed to accommodate the expected 3 Proposed Site Access KUR-World will have an extensive internal road network traffic volumes. There are two operators providing daily services between Cairns and Kuranda, Trans North (five times daily) and Johns Kuranda Bus (three times daily). Trans North also provides a service between Cairns and Mareeba (three times daily). There are currently no Translink (State funded public transport) services operating on the Kennedy Highway. In addition to the public bus services school buses serve Kuranda District State College.

QTRIP Plans The Queensland Transport and Roads Investment Program (QTRIP) details the current transport and road projects the Queensland Government plans to deliver over the next four years. The QTRIP document is updated annually and includes different projects on the Kennedy Highway between 2017-18 and 2020-21.

In addition to infrastructure projects, a study has recently commenced investigating and identifying safety treatments for the Kennedy Highway between Cairns and Mareeba.

Smithfield Bypass The recently announced Smithfield Bypass will soon begin construction in time for its expected opening in 2021.

The 3.8km bypass will run parallel to the existing Captain Cook Highway between Yorkey’s Knob and McGregor Road roundabouts. This bypass will reduce the number of vehicles using the existing Kennedy Highway – Captain Cook Highway roundabout, easing congestion and improving safety at the intersection.

Myola Road Myola Road is a sealed, two-lane two-way undivided road linking the locality of Myola to the Kennedy Highway at Kuranda. Myola Road is controlled by Mareeba Shire Council (MSC) and is classified as a ‘Major Rural Road’. The posted speed limit is 60km/h along the entire section of Myola Road, apart from a 600m long 40km/h School Zone along the frontage of the Kuranda District State College. The horizontal and vertical alignment of Myola Road from the Kennedy Highway to the intersection with Barnwell Road is typically constrained, while the traffic lanes are 3.5m wide with varying shoulder widths. Traffic volumes on Myola Road range from approximately 1500 vpd near Barnwell Road to 2500 vpd near the intersection with the Kennedy Highway.

Mareeba Shire Council Upgrades Mareeba Shire Council has plans to upgrade sections of Myola Road to an improved cross sectional standard between McKenzie Street and Barnwell Road, as detailed in the Far North Queensland Regional Roads Transport Group (FNQRRTG) Works Program.

The access to the proposed Rainforest Education Centre will be along an existing track. This access will be formalised and made suitable for KUR-World operations but limited to small recreational vehicles.

What are we doing about the impacts?

Sustainable Operations As an integrated eco-resort development KUR-World seeks to protect and enhance environmental values and contribute to regional sustainable development. KUR-World will limit and reduce the demands on transport infrastructure throughout its operations. KURWorld will support sustainable development by: • Mode Choice – KUR-World will provide a shuttle service for resort users and staff to minimise the number of vehicles accessing the site. It is expected that up to 90% of day guests to the resort and farm theme park will arrive via the shuttle service. This is in line with the operation of similar developments within the area; • Minimising On-Site Parking – To support the use of shuttle service to and from the resort, KUR-World will provide limited on-site parking to reduce the number of private vehicles access; and • Improvements to Public Transport – If needed, KUR-World would consider making the shuttle services to and from the resort available to local residents, improving public transport usage within the community and supporting greater access to Cairns.

Transport Infrastructure Mitigations As part of the EIS process the impacts of the KUR-World

development on the transport network will be assessed in accordance with the relevant guidelines. Impact mitigation will be developed in conjunction with the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads, the Mareeba Shire Council and relevant standards and guidelines. Mitigation measures required will be based on its overall impact and developed in consultation with relevant authorities in the form of: • Safety Improvements – Where appropriate, KURWorld will provide localised safety improvements to ensure that the accident rate does not worsen because of additional traffic.

• Capacity Improvements – Where required, KUR-World will provide capacity improvements to the road network in accordance with relevant standards.

New wind farm for Ravenshoe

A renewable energy company is holding talks today with the community in Ravenshoe to discuss the possibility of a new wind farm in the area.

Neoen is planning a 29 turbine wind farm between Ravenshoe and Kaban that will dwarf the current Windy Hill Wind Farm by having more turbines that are 200m taller, generating almost 10 times more electricity.

“The design for the Kaban Green Power Hub includes up to 29 wind turbines with a tip height of up to 240m, and battery storage of between 70MW-100MW,” said Tasha Nabila for the company.

“The Kaban Green Power Hub will be able to produce approximately 376,680 megawatt hours of clean energy per year.”

The Windy Hill turbines by comparison are 44m high which only generate 12mw of electricity.

The Kaban Green Power Hub could be up and running by 2019.

are interested in employment opportunities to contact the project team with a description of their skills.

“Additionally, Neoen has committed to establishing the Kaban Green Power Hub Community Fund to benefit local community projects and initiatives,” said Ms Nabila.

“The process to establish the community fund is already underway.”

Over the upcoming

months, Neoen representatives will determine what issues are important to the community as a whole, and to develop a benefit-sharing strategy to maximise benefits to the local community.

At this stage, Neoen is working towards commencing the 12-month construction process in the third quarter of 2018, which would mean that we would start generating in the last half of 2019.

Chamber launch croc watch page In a bid to raise awareness of saltwater crocodiles in the region Mareeba Chamber of Commerce have this week launched a campaign to encourage locals to report more croc sightings.

ISAWACROC is a Facebook page launched on Monday that will give locals a place to upload any photos of crocodiles they

may see in the region.

“We want to encourage people to photograph any sightings of saltwater crocodiles so they can be successfully removed,” said Mareeba Chamber of Commerce president Joe Moro.

“Saltwater crocodiles are not native to the area and we want to help eradicate them from the Table-

lands.

“If you see one, take a photo of it – with a long lens! – and send it in, but we also want to reiterate that any crocodile sightings must be reported to the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection.”

TRC receives funding for traineeships

Tablelands Regional Council has been awarded funding to employ seven trainees under the First Start program, part of the Queensland Government’s Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative.

“TRC applied for 10 First Start positions to commence in the 2017-2018 financial year so we’re very excited we were successful

in getting the funding to offer employment opportunities for seven young people,” Mayor Joe Paronella said.

“Youth unemployment is a big issue for our region and persuading young people to stay in the Tablelands area is a challenge, so this is a fantastic outcome.”

Italian culture celebrated in style On October 8, around 80 guests gathered to eat, drink and celebrate their Italian culture at the Mareeba Spanish Club.

Mareeba Shire Councillor Angela Toppin officially opened the festivities, with the lunch being prepared by Teresa and Gennaro Marinelli with sound supplied by Mark Langtree from DJ Feel The Music.

There was over four hours of spectacular entertainment from musical performances to fun games and competitions.

Event organiser, Millie Niceforo said “Our Italian lunch had a wonderful atmosphere and was well received by the local community. With the help of the wonderful performers, volunteers and guests I am looking to make this a bi-annual event in 2018.”

Battle of Beersheba service in Malanda

In honour of the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Beersheba, Malanda RSL is holding a special service and presentation on October 31.

The Battle of Beersheba was fought on 31 October 1917 in Israel during World War I as part of the wider British offensive collectively known as the third Battle of Gaza. The final phase of this all day battle was the famous mounted charge of the 4th Light Horse Brigade. Commenc-

ing at dusk, members of the brigade stormed through the Turkish defences and seized the strategic town of Beersheba. The capture of Beersheba enabled British Empire forces to break the Ottoman line near Gaza on 7 November and advance into Palestine. The new manager at Malanda RSL Jason Groves said it was important to remember what our Australian servicemen and women have done for our country.

Malanda RSL has undergone a recent transformation under the new management with items on display and a small museum of memorabilia in the works. The anniversary of the Battle of Beersheba will begin at 11am with a service, followed by lunch at 12pm. For viewing will be a World War I era light horse saddle and sword thanks to collector Dan Metcalf.

Wild weather wreaks havoc Black Mountain Road, Julatten was impassable last week after heavy rain in the area.

Wet and wild weather brought relief to farmers across the region last week, but havoc for others as storms and heavy rain saw homes lose power with others having issues with water.

The break in the dry spell began on Tuesday and by Friday morning the

Bureau of Meteorology had recorded 100ml had fallen over Atherton, 86ml in Cooktown, 34ml in Mareeba and 52ml in Walkamin.

Residents living at the end of Black Mountain Road, Julatten, were unable to return home Thursday morning after the rain washed part of the road away 4km from the Euluma Creek Road intersection.

Mareeba Shire Council officers were forced to close the road until Saturday to repair the damage.

Meanwhile thousands of homes in Kuranda, Biboohra, Julatten and Dimbulah were left without power on Thursday morning after storms hit the night before and residents in Ravenshoe have been forced to boil their drink-

ing water after the rainfall compromised the water treatment plant.

“Tablelands Regional Council advises that consumption of unboiled water could lead to nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal cramps and a general feeling of being unwell,” said a spokesperson.

The restrictions will be in place until further notice.

Local transport companies forced out of operation

Rego fees killing small businesses The increasing cost of motor vehicle registration fees is forcing local independent transport companies out of business.

Chillagoe heavy haulage contractors Wayne and Karyl Struber have called it a day after 20 years in the truck industry. They said excessive increases to annual registration fees was the final nail in the coffin.

“This year the cost to register a body truck is up 20 per cent on last year,” Mr Struber said.

“Compulsory third party insurance for a body truck is $1274 plus three extra straight out taxes called a Heavy Vehicle Registration Road Use Fee of $817 then a Heavy Vehicle Regulatory Fee of $331 and $71 for an administration fee totalling $2493, it is over the top.

“When you add up the cost of registering a prime mover for $12,000 then $8000 for each trailer the

bill adds up to $36,000 for a triple road train before you start work. It is impossible to find all this money.

“We are selling all our trucks and going to something else. The government needs to have a good look at how it is forcing people out of business and onto dole queues.

“It looks to me like a plan to let the big boys take over the transport industry at the expense of family operated small businesses.

“Some drivers are operating below cost just to keep the wheels moving because they are desperate for work, but there is no point in going broke intentionally.”

Katters Australian Party candidate for Cook, Gordon Rasmussen said he sympathised with the Struber family as he too ran a large farming business and had to pay truck registrations and a myriad of other government fees and

charges.

“The Labor and Liberal parties have driven small business into the ground.

There has been no help for small operators to keep them going, just more and more interference by heaping hundreds of new regulations on transport drivers and more fees every year,” Mr Rasmussen said.

“When KAP holds the balance of power after the election we will be having a complete review of road user fees and charges and we will keep family businesses on the road, not throw them onto the scrap heap in favour of the big end of town.”

Meanwhile geologist David Chant who operates an industrial mineral processing plant at Chillagoe agreed he was finding it hard to keep his business going due to excessive government charges simply to hold a mining lease and to operate a business.

Mareeba Hospital – Best days yet to come The Mareeba Hospital and the services it provides is a major concern for the LNP. Labor’s fumbled attempt to trick locals into believing that a new staff accommodation building will draw more quality new staff and essential new procedures into this community, is just plain insulting. Cameron Dick shame on you, but then, this really is all you can expect of Labor – they just don’t understand or listen to our local needs.

The confusion they’ve created has been taken advantage of by members of other political parties purely seeking to gain votes without offering any rational solutions. All they have done is use this smokescreen to scare the people of Mareeba who are still asking me if the hospital really is closing. It is totally irresponsible of Labor – and others – to cause such uncertainty and distress in our community, but obviously that is all they are capable of – vote grabbing scaremongering, no accountability, no solutions or real vision for the community.

What the they haven’t told you is that Mareeba Hospital is operating according to its legislated requirements and that modern medical technologies have increased hospital efficiency and improved community health outcomes delivered by highly skilled staff. There will be no return to the “old days of long stays”.

So, what is the solution to increasing hospital services?

Under the LNP, improved hospital services would be based on

identified community needs, innovative and appropriate for our region.

I have been in discussions with many LNP Shadow Ministers and people seriously looking at real options to grow the Hospital, essential services and local economy at the same time.

In putting the puzzle together, I now clearly see an opportunity to fully explore the option of building a new combined medical and regional disaster relief service hub on the vacant land within the hospital grounds. The accommodation upgrade is an element of that.

We all remember the temporary isolation of Mareeba and the Cape when a cyclone closes the range roads to Cairns. We only need to look at what has recently happened to Puerto Rico.

It has been proposed that a new complex offering modern rooms would help attract new medical service providers, such as dialysis, cancer, chronic health and specialist aging population care. The complex could also provide temporary relief for disaster affected people from all over the local region, Cape York and Torres Strait, should Cairns services be out of reach or unable to service this additional influx.

It has also been suggested that where possible the rooves of all hospital grounds buildings be equipped with solar panels to provide electricity. This concept could offset upgrade costs and offer some electricity base load relief. It is critical that whatever the source, stable and adequate power is always provided for medical and emergency services.

nity needs, leading to prosperity through innovation. I am in discussions with the LNP exploring all opportunities this hospital/ disaster relief plan for Mareeba could offer. This includes services and long term local jobs.

Katters chaos on Tully-Millstream Even in the weird and windy world of Katter Party politics, the Shane and Bob duo have reached new heights in their desperate bid to get voters’ attention.

The subject of their latest fiasco is the Tully-Millstream Hydroelectricity project.

Spooked by the strong campaign being mounted by the LNP’s candidate, Mario Quagliata in the new Electorate of Hill, and desperate to create the illusion of “action man”, Dalrymple MP Shane Knuth rushed a half-baked motion into the Queensland Parliament calling for the construction of the TullyMillstream scheme.

Shane was apparently ignorant of the fact that his Katter Party boss Bob had just published a scathing criticism of the scheme (and the LNP’s proposal to revisit it) in the Innisfail Times newspaper (26/7/17).

The discord in the Katter Party was there for all to see, but did this worry our intrepid Katter Party duo – not a bit, because next thing we know there

they are smiling enthusiastically out of a photo in the Cassowary Coast Independent Newspaper (13/10/17), claiming to have “re-ignited the push to finish the long awaited Tully Millstream Hydroelectricity project – “.

The about-face shown in Bob’s contributions in two local newspapers in the space of a few weeks shows how little credibility the Katter Party has left.

Bob’s motives in knocking the scheme are hard to fathom but he seemed to be attempting to discredit LNP’s Shadow Minister Andrew Cripps’ sensible analysis of the scheme’s potential and his proposal for an update of the original feasibility study done almost 30 years ago.

Mr Cripps noted correctly that many inputs and assumptions on which the original study was based were out of date and many changes had occurred which needed to be factored in to an updated study to give a true picture of the current feasibility of the scheme.

Any responsible Government would not proceed to construction based on obsolete information, but apparently Shane Knuth and Bob Katter don’t care about such “trifling” realities.

Like most micro-parties their strategy is to tell the people what they want to hear knowing that it is unlikely that they will ever have to deliver on their promises.

ally tell one much, they seem to be light promotional stuff with lots of photos. It looks to me like they want community support for a new township next to Kuranda.

What I’m not sure about at all is the approval process. What exactly is the approval process?

Commenting on their Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) does not seem the same as commenting on the vast rezoning of hundreds of hectares for a new town.

And what about objections?

Is there the right to objection as per normal council developments? And access to the courts – if so, which court?

We might have heard of ‘State Significant Projects’ but what about ‘coordinated project status’? Anyone hear of that?

Has it actually been declared as one in planning law? Will the township have all independent freehold titles or be group titles with body corporates?

Yep, a lot of questions that need to be answered by the Mareeba Shire Council and State government and published in the newspapers too.

The community has no real idea what is going down – it’s time for governments to publically spell out in detail, the entire approval process.

KAP means business on croc problem The Labor and Liberal parties have blood on their hands by playing politics with Katters Australian Party’s Safer Waterways bill that would allow all crocodiles to be removed from waterways south of the Daintree

River.

The family of Mrs Anne Cameron who was taken by a 4.3 metre crocodile near Port Douglas has my sincere condolences. With this bill, we are taking every possible step to prevent another croc attack.

At the last sittings of State parliament the two Brisbanecentric parties voted down the fast tracking of this bill leaving Far North residents to be menaced by the exploding crocodile population.

The Safer Waterways bill was developed by northern people to protect northern people, not by the Brisbane latte-sipping-set which drives policy for the Labor and Liberal parties.

I have just returned from an intensive tour of Cape York Peninsula listening to indigenous communities, businessmen, tourists and cattle producers.

They all agree there has been a large increase in crocodile numbers throughout the electorate of Cook and that something has to be done about it.

KAP is ready to act on the crocodile menace but the LNP’s Barron River hopeful memberin-waiting, Michael Trout has been totally silent about his previous support to remove the continued, tourism-destroying crocodile attacks.

No doubt his hapless leader from Brisbane has ordered he keep quiet about the croc menace lest it upset the green academia in the south east corner.

I mean business, KAP means business and we will rid the north of this danger.

But after her husband was given just two years to live in 2011, she took a break from writing.

“I lost my creativity and couldn’t write for that period,” she said.

“But then I found this

six page letter sent to me

by Ilse Dikstra all about her life. It was fascinating.”

After her husband’s death Joyce returned to writing two hours a day and after multiple emails backwards and forwards to Ilse in Holland, she compiled a book that narrates her co-

lourful life.

Joyce herself is Dutchborn and moved to Australia when she was 23. Her books have sold thousands of copies and are available to purchase at Collins in Smithfield and the Post Office in Kuranda.

North Queensland Tropical North Queensland will host a new major tourism event for the next three years with the launch of Targa Great Barrier Reef, a three-day car rally that will see the field of around 200 cars visit all key regions, including Port Douglas, Innisfail and the Atherton Tablelands.

The new event, to be based in Cairns from 31 August to 2 September next year, is modelled on the world’s largest tarmac rally, Targa Tasmania, which has been held annually on the Apple Isle since making its debut in 1992.

Targa Great Barrier Reef will be a round of the four event CAMS Australian Targa Championship, which also includes Targa North West, Targa Tasmania, and Targa High Country

in Victoria.

The extension of the series into Queensland was made possible through a three-year funding deal by Tourism and Events Queensland and Cairns Regional Council with series organiser, Targa Australia.

The two hundred cars expected to take part in the 2018 event will represent a cavalcade of motoring history from pre-war classics right through to the latest exotic supercars.

The cars will tackle 15 stages across more than 200 competitive kilometres on a course that covers more than 800 kilometres across Tropical North Queensland.

The event will start and finish each day in Cairns, with a Super Street Stage on the Saturday night bringing the action right into the

heart of the city. Cairns will also host Targafest, where the cars are on display for fans to see close up, while regional towns will host a lunch stop each day which will see various local charities supported.

Underlining the scale of the event is the fact that more than 500 local officials and various community groups will be involved in its successful running.

Targa Australia Director, Mark Perry, is excited with the expansion of the championship.

“The secret to the long-term success of Targa Tasmania is that it is a tourism destination event built around a passion for the motor vehicle,” Perry said.

“It attracts people and their cars from right around Australia, and overseas. It’s a format

that sees the event travel to the fans, stopping at a number of towns along the way, meaning it’s not just one town or one city that is the winner and our `stadium’ covers thousands of square kilometres of iconic landscapes that will showcase the region to the world.

“Targa is renowned for showcasing and bringing awareness to many of Australia’s iconic and important World Heritage Areas through its TV Specials, broadcast around the world, and will continue to do so with Targa Great Barrier Reef in highlighting the beauty and importance of preserving the Tropical North Queensland region.”

“Targa Tasmania attracts some beautiful cars from across the eras, and I’m sure many of those competitors will

be drawn to this new event and others will enter now they have an event closer to home, along with also tapping into the lucrative Asian market due to the ease of travelling to Cairns.”

The LAND Navua Kur-World branching out program hailed a success

TRC has hailed as a great success its Navua Sedge Herbicide Co-contribution Program, launched in September this year.

More than 100 applications for the program had been received by Council from landholders by midOctober, with the deadline for applications set to close at the end of this month.

“We’ve had a fantastic response to our Navua Sedge initiative, which has struck a very positive chord with landholders,” Mayor Joe Paronella said.

The Mayor added that Council’s Land Protection Officers are working through the applications as quickly as possible.

The Navua Sedge program is being offered in conjunction with the 20162017 Works for Queensland Program and has been designed to assist landholders in controlling Navua Sedge infestations. It is an essential initiative to ensure that Council’s control operations on public land are complemented by adjoining landholders being able

to carry out similar levels of control.

The program is providing a total of $40,000 as a co-contribution towards the purchase of herbicide.

Processing involves the assessment of the respective properties, processing payment and working together with project partner Malanda Rural Supplies which is supplying the chemicals to successful applicants.

Applications close at 4.30pm on Tuesday, 31 October 2017 (or when available funding is expended).

“Council is continuing to lobby the state and federal governments for research into more effective control techniques and for funding opportunities for Navua Sedge control, while also continuing our roadside treatment program,” the Mayor said.

Ken Lee, the man behind Kur-World – a $640m integrated Kuranda ecoresort which is still in the approvals stage – is spreading his business wings and branching out his brand into other areas throughout the Tablelands.

At a Mareeba Chamber of Commerce meeting last week, Kur brand manager Mark Lawson told attendees that Mr Lee had been developing the Kur brand beyond the resort.

“The cattle business is really important to us,” he said. “We agist properties in Dimbulah, Millaa Millaa, Malanda and Ravenshoe and are developing the Kur-Cow breed which is a Brahman and Red Angus cross.”

The company agists cattle on approximately 19 properties across the region and currently own around 4,500 head.

Mr Lawson said the plan is also to incorporate a Waggu breed of cattle into the mix.

“We’re buying a small amount with the idea to breed a bit more hardiness into them,” he said.

“We brought some up here originally but they were very tick prone and we had a lot of problems with them bleeding out.

“We’re hoping this

Mr Lawson said the cattle side of the ‘Kur’ enterprise is growing to be “quite a significant business”.

“It’s growing at quite a rapid rate,” he said. “We have just finished our first full cycle of the breeding program with our first lot of calves on the ground now.”

Mr Lawson said the idea is for other spin-off businesses to be generated across the Tablelands including producing honey.

“Kur-Honey is another small offering from the Kur-brand,” Mr Lawson said at the meeting.

“We have another small property in Millaa Millaa where we are producing a small amount of honey. It’s not enough to make it commercial but it’s a start. It’s the start of an enterprise and we’d

like to develop the brand.”

At the 626ha Myola property where elements such as accommodation, an equestrian centre and a well being retreat are all part of the plan, Mr Lawson said a market garden growing local produce was also in the works.

“At the moment it’s a very small garden where we’re growing edible herbs and other products which we’d like to make into another commercial activity,” he said.

“Getting certification for anything that is edible is very difficult and takes a lot of time, so we’re going through the process of getting certification on that property as well.

“That would form another brand called Kur-Organics which is slowly adding to the brand.”

Mr Lawson went on to talk about the development planned for Myola, explaining that the time frame had extended from six to eight years.

The last 2017 meeting for the Tableland Competition Car Club was held on a very muddy track at Herberton’s Tepon Speedway on Sunday. Top points in the A grade went to David Shade 46 followed Andy Gamblin 41 in second with Lucy Reed 33 third. Slatah Walmsley won B grade with 48 points, second Sahge Walmsley 47 and third Russell Walmsley 27. Corey Martin was top of the points in C grade with 47, second Kameka Little 37 and third Sam Jennings 23.

Zone 18 Pony Club champs Malanda Pony Club will host the 2017 Zone 18 Championships this Saturday and Sunday, October 28 and 29, 2017.

The club recently held the successful annual three-day Gymkhana competition at the start of October that saw 130 riders and their horses come and compete in the various events.

Zone 18 has 14 affiliated pony clubs that spread across FNQ from Tully to Ravenshoe to Mossman and all areas in between.

The members will be attending this weekend to participate in the Gymkhana and Sporting events and the crowning of the 2017 Zone’s Personality and Fundraising Winners.

Saturday at 9am with the Gymkhana where all riders march in their individual clubs which is spectacular to witness. There are nine events on the program for the day where nine age groups up to 26 years and over will compete for age champion.

Sunday kicks off at 9am with the sporting championships. Competitors will compete for another full day taking part in events such as barrel racing, flag race, snakes and ladders, drum and peg and more.

Presentation of the age group champions will take place at the end of the day.

Spectators are invited to come along over the two days to witness the action and entry is Free.

Focus on club champs The Mareeba Basketball summer season fixture rounds were completed last week and the real focus will now centre on the club championship semi-finals.

This coming Thursday supporters will see players contesting 5 semi-finals in senior and junior grades.

No doubt with the semi-final winners then qualifying for the grand finals next week, keenly contested and entertaining basketball should eventuate.

However earlier this week the senior ladies grand finalists will be known with their semi-finals being on Tuesday night.

The first of the senior men’s semi-final will see Stingrays clashing with Barras. Stingrays will prove hard to defeat after finishing on top of the competition points table.

They have a sound defence which generally troubles their opposing teams. Also

David Hawke has been in great form throughout the season and is a vital player for the Stingrays side, in their quest for the championship title. Still their group of good young players will also need to play well in order for Stingrays to continue on their winning way.

For Barras to gain victory over Stingrays, Daniel Ruggeri together with Tom Harvey will need to play at their best and also require

strong support from other team members.

The other men’s semi-final on Thursday night between Red Devils and Blue Angels may turn into a classic. A close contest between these two excellent combinations appears so evenly matched.

Red Devils have a number of players who can trouble the Blue Angels defence. While Clinton Cameron is capable of causing many anxious moments to

the Blue Angels side and is a key player in the Red Devils hopes of a grand final appearance.

Blue Angels have been impressive in recent fixtures. Certainly Jerome Gully has played strongly over the season and if the talented young players on the side showcase their good attacking flair then Red Devils will have a difficult task to control them.

The curtain raiser to the men’s semi-finals will

be Andy’s Angels against Alex V.I.P promises to develop into a tremendous encounter.

Bother of these sides have a number of outstanding junior in their respective sides, so a close tussle is likely, right until the full time hooter.

The winner will then take on Hawkes Prey in the Grand Final for the senior high school junior division championship title.

nior high school division competition will play their semi-finals on Thursday afternoon.

The four teams in these semis have their share of youngsters who played excellent basketball during the fixture rounds. They also have potential match winners in the respective line ups. Any of these sides can progress towards the grand final.

Keeping it in the family for 100th anniversary

Gearing up for the Roosters’ 100th year, one local family has seen three generations go through the ranks and looks back at the history of the club with some fond memories.

Alan Poggioli Snr was the first to play football for the club in 1968 as a fresh-faced 18 year old. He signed up after someone from the club visited his dad on their Kairi farm.

“He said why isn’t this fella playing football?” he said.

“Back then there was no Cairns League, just the Eacham League and it was a strong competition. You all played for your town and the team that we had, there’s still a lot of them around here and we’re still all good mates. We used to mix a lot together and have a lot of BBQs. There was a lot of mateship.

“Best days of your bloody life.”

Mr Poggioli Snr was

part of the now legendary team that won the club’s first grand final in 49 years.

In those days they would get a beer if they won and a can of soft drink if they lost and $4 a week pay.

It was 1970 and Warren Orr was his team mate, right before he took off to play for Australia.

“It was fantastic - they gave us the key to the town,” he said.

“All the businesses put on a do for us - the car dealerships, all the cafes and pubs.”

Despite an offer to play for a team in Brisbane, Mr Poggioli Snr decided to stay local to work on the farm and eventually gave up football after his father’s death.

His affiliation with the club was just getting going, however.

He went on to have coaching roles, was president of the junior league and eventually became one of the club’s most dedicated long-term sponsors, before sons Alan Jnr

and Dean both got into the game.

“We’re Roosters through and through,” said Alan.

“We started playing when we were six years old and now our kids play.”

The men both said that playing was all about the social scene and being with “your mates”.

“I don’t miss playing - I just miss the mateship and after the game,” said Dean.

“I never miss the footy itself. We never miss the going up there in August and its 3 degrees and there’s a bit of drizzle and it’s freezing.

“The dressing rooms were the best part of the footy - that’s the bit you remember.”

Dean is the current president of the junior league while Alan has had a stint in the role previously. Although their pride in the club is as strong as ever, he and Alan both believe the players’ attitudes have changed dramatically since they were last on the field.

“Young fellas these days have got too big of an opinion of themselves and they walk around saying what can you give me and they’re not worth a pinch of shit,” said Alan.

“But they all think they’re worth a fortune because they see it on TV, these blokes getting paid and a club in Cairns might show a bit of interest in someone and all of a sudden they all think they should all be contracted players.”

Although the football has become more professional, the Poggioli’s believe the attitudes of the players has declined from the club’s hey day back in the 1990s.

“The football has changed - it’s a different culture now,” said Alan.

“A lot of the players take themselves too seriously.”

Back in their prime, the footballers would get together in the dressing rooms at the end of the games and have strong ca-

maraderie between them.

It’s what kept them going back year after year.

Alan played for the Roosters for seven years and Dean five. Both of their sons now play for the club in junior league and so do their nephews.

The whole family will be involved in the 100 year anniversary celebrations of the club next year, including the main event on June 15-17 which will feature a march down the Main Street, a reunion of old players and a game between the Roosters and the Mareeba Gladiators.

More details about the anniversary celebrations will be released soon.

Outgoing president Andrew Foster is putting out a call to encourage all league followers to please come in and help the hand full of volunteers to keep the club going forward.

The AGM saw just two positions filled, Vice President and Secretary, but the all-important Presidency and Treasurers rolls did not receive any nominations

and none were forthcoming from those in attendance.

Due to the lack of interest the meeting closed early as it could not proceed without an executive.

League supporters will have another opportunity to form the club at a second AGM to be held on Monday November 6, from 6.30pm at the Gladiators Rugby League Club house.

President Andrew Foster said he was extremely

disappointed that the two positions could not be filled.

“I would call on anyone who enjoys their footy to come to the next meeting on November 6, particularly past players who have enjoyed the club in another life,” he said.

He also stressed how important it was for more volunteers to help out during the season as the burden of running the club

falls in the hands of a select few who are willing to give their time to keep the sport and the club going strong.

With pre-season training due to commence on November 14 under new coach Matt Wakefield, who arrives in Mareeba this week, the club is looking to be a force again in all grades including A-grade, reserves, under 18 and second division in 2018.

End of an era for Bulls coach Alex

It’s the end of an era for the Bulls with coach Alex Srhoj stepping back from the role after 10 years.

Srhoj, 35, said it was time to hand over the reins to someone else after a controversial year that saw him struggle with the way the sport was being run resulting in some on-pitch blow outs with referees.

“I’m comfortable with the decision because I lost my temper a few times this year with regards to a few decisions that were made and the way the sport was being run,” he said.

“I see myself as a bit of a role model for the other coaches and kids and the fact that I allowed myself to lose my temper a few times is not a good thing for the kids and so I think it’s time to stand back.

“It’s nothing to do with the players or the club. It’s external factors that have contributed to it all.”

Srhoj will maintain a presence at the club in a coaching support role but says he hopes he has left a legacy behind after so many years spent shaping the players.

“When you win, you win, but when you lose, the supporters are still there to support you as well,” he said.

“Especially when you work hard which is one of the attributes of the club.

Hopefully that’s something that I’ll leave behind is that culture and that attitude – you know if you work hard you’ll get rewarded.

“The players have had to put up with a few tantrums now and then but I make no regrets about wanting to push the players to their maximum. Sometimes that comes out the wrong way but we’ve had results.”

Those results include winning the treble in 2014 – the premiership, grand final and the Crad Evans while the following year they were undefeated. The nail-biting grand final that year (2015) is a game that will go down in history as one of the club’s most dramatic after two goals were scored in extra time reversing the outcome and seeing them walk away with the win.

Srhoj was drafted in as the reserve ladies coach in 2004 at just 22 years of age after a knee injury put an end to his own soccer playing days. He took them from last place to fourth place and walked away with Coach of the Year at the end of the season. The following year he got them all the way to the grand final before going on to train the juniors and reserves before becoming the Premiership coach five years ago.

The mark he has left on the club is indelible.

“One thing that I felt really strongly about was bringing the A grade and B grade together – in the past they’ve always trained separately,” he said.

“But when I took over in 2013, I said if I’m going to coach the first team then they need to be one body. From 2014 onwards the first and second team trained together and it

showed on paper.

“That’s something I’ve really pushed home is that we’re united – we’re stronger together. Even with working bees – I hope I’ve left a bit of a culture there where the senior players understand that it’s not just about turning up and playing, it’s the whole club. At working bees for the past four or five years pretty much the entire playing group is there.”

Other clubs regionally have now adopted the same practice of training both the A and B grade teams as one.

It is the same attitude and mindset that Srhoj hopes to instil into younger players through his newly created soccer school – AVS Football Academy.

Now in its second term the school offers specialist coaching to players from six through to 15. So far it has been a roaring success and bridged a gap in the industry for local up and coming talent.

“It’s about giving kids the opportunity to develop their dreams,” he said.

“I want to give the kids the opportunity to believe in themselves and create a environment where the kids not only enjoy their football physically, but mentally understand their strengths and weaknesses.

“There’s nothing there for the kids up here at all.

“If the kids want any further development they’ve got no choice but to step outside of the region and travel to Cairns and anything bigger than that they have to go to Brisbane.

“Unfortunately the sport has let this region down in the last three or four years, not only in kids development but also in coaching development.

There’s a massive gap there for the whole of the Atherton Tablelands.”

Srhoj blames a change in the structure of football, claiming the sport has become ‘elite-based’ with many clubs now becoming ‘community’ clubs, leaving talented kids no other option but to travel outside of the area for development.

“Growing up on the Tablelands being a part of the whole Tablelands junior soccer program and the way we would develop growing up I thought it was very good,” he said.

“And it was very successful. A lot of good kids came out of that in my generation. There was more support and more development opportunities from the body – from the Federation. Now unfortunately there is nothing available for the kids at all.”

Some of the biggest names to have come from Mareeba and gone on to play at state and national levels include Frank Farina, Shane Steffunto and Srhoj’s own cousin Wayne Srhoj. As well as more recently Nicholas Panetta.

Srhoj is hoping his new training academy will nurture some of the current talent and get them the same success – but only if they’re happy to leave their egos at the door.

“Attitude, belief and commitment are three big

things, if they’ve got that then everything else will go well for them,” said Srhoj.

“I tell them it’s not just about themselves it’s about their team mates – mental belief and mental strength is something that kids don’t have enough of these days.

At the moment in society if things get too easy people just quit or find another avenue – that’s something I’m trying to instil in the

kids is that if the going gets tough, it’s an opportunity to learn. They’re going to be put outside their comfort zone and they won’t know if they can do it unless they give it a go.”

His tough love and passion for the game will be sorely missed on the pitch at Borzi Park next year, but Srhoj said he is stepping back from coaching at a time when the club is in a

strong position.

“The club is bigger than any one person,” he said.

“It’s bigger than me, it’s bigger than the players, the club is the club.

“The history of the club means everything, people come and go, coaches come and go, but the club, the culture will remain, now its up to the next generation to continue their new chapter.”
