LESS-FORTUNATE Mareeba students who are graduating at the end of the year will have the opportunity to express their interest in receiving items such as shoes, dresses and suits for their formal. The initiative is courtesy of Q.I.T.E Mareeba and will be available to students whose parent or parents are on income support. Q.I.T.E is kicking off the drive with a $500 donation and they ask that any student who wants to be a part of this initiative to register at one of the Q.I.T.E offices before June 30. “We don’t have a particular target in mind - this is a new initiative that we’re running and ultimately it is about looking at what the needs are for the community and helping those who are disadvantaged,” Q.I.T.E General Manager Jillian Trout said. “It’s a great achievement to be at school for 12 years and this drive will provide the opportunity for those students to celebrate their final year of schooling and feel good about their accomplishment.” As part of the initiative, Q.I.T.E will also be contacting businesses within the community to see whether they would like to make a donation. The donation drive starts on Monday April 1, 2019. For more information, you can contact Q.I.T.E on 1800 354 414 or visit the Mareeba office at 126 Byrnes Street, Mareeba.

The Mareeba Multicultural Festival advisory committee was appointed at last week’s Mareeba Shire Council meeting. The Festival committee was established in 1998 to organise and host a celebration of cultural diversity highlighting the 65 different nationalities represented in the Shire. With support from local businesses, Council and the Queensland Government, the Festival continues to grow and attracts thousands of visitors to the Shire. Mareeba Shire Council May-
or Tom Gilmore noted Council’s appreciation to Mr Cordenos who stepped down as chair of the committee after 20 years at the helm. “Under the direction of Giuliano, the festival started from humble beginnings two decades ago and has since grown to be one of the Shire’s most anticipated yearly events,” he said. “Giuliano has given so much of his time and energy, building the Festival to what it is today, one of the region’s most significant events on the calendar.
I sincerely thank Giuliano on behalf of my Council and the community for his dedication, vision and service to the Festival and the Mareeba Shire community.” The committee unanimously nominated Jennifer Murat as the new chair of the Festival organising committee. “I wish the new chair of the committee Jennifer all the very best going forward,” Cr Gilmore said. “The committee does a marvellous job organising the Fes-
tival each year and I commend the entire band of volunteers for their hard work and dedication. “Council has always had a harmonious working relationship with the Festival committee and this will no doubt continue well into the future. “I have confidence that the event will continue to grow while keeping the true meaning of the Festival alive, which is of course to celebrate the wonderful diversity of our Shire and region afar.”

Palliative care room opened Mareeba Shire Council have decided to remain undivided after reviewing Kuranda local Jax Bergersen petitions for a divisional council.
Mareeba Shire to remain undivided AN official decision has been made on the petitions which asked that the Mareeba Shire Council move to a divisional council model. The petitions were submitted at a council meeting last month by Kuranda local Jax Bergersen, which were for electoral divisions to be created for the Kuranda and Julatten areas respectively. Councillors were given the opportunity to review the documents and make a determination as to whether it would be in the best interest of the shire.
The councillors voted unanimously in favour of remaining an undivided council. Mareeba Shire Council Chief Executive Officer Peter Franks presented a report at last Tuesday’s council meeting outlining the reasons why council have chosen to remain undivided. Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Tom Gilmore was strong in his support of keeping the current council model unchanged. “I have worked on three councils, two of which were divided and one which was undivided,” he said.
“And in my personal experience I am strongly of the belief that an undivided council delivers the best governance for this shire.” Cr Gilmore said while he can see why a divisional council is an attractive idea in theory; he stated that he believed it would be a Pyrrich victory if it went ahead. “What you will often find in a divisional model is that an individual councillor will find themselves isolated and unable to influence other councillors on issues pertinent to their area,” he said.
“I think that’s why doing it as a group (undivided council) is so beneficial. “An undivided council ensures that if you want to be reelected as a councillor, you better know the people and the issues they are experiencing throughout the entirety of the shire.” “We are lucky to have a group of fine councillors currently on the Mareeba Shire Council who work very well together and I look forward to continuing my work alongside them as members of an undivided council.”
THE Blue Care Mareeba Garden Settlement officially opened its dedicated palliative care room on Monday. The room, which is courtesy of funding provided by the Granite Masonic Lodge and Hand Heart Pockets, will provide care for those with life-threatening illnesses and their families. The official opening consisted of a plaque unveiling and a morning tea for residents, staff and members of the Granite Masonic Lodge. Blue Care North Queensland General Manager Liz Brown thanked the Granite Masonic Lodge and Hand Heart Pocket while highlighting how the room will provide a continuation of Blue Care’s commitment to holistic care. “When a loved one has to receive palliative care it is very hard, so we are glad we can provide this space to our residents and their families during what is an incredibly difficult time,” she said. “Blue Care is very grateful to the Granite Masonic Lodge and the Hand Heart Pocket program for their
donation which has resulted in a palliative care room that is peaceful and allows our team to continue their high standard of care in a private and comforting space” Ms Brown said. Granite Masonic Lodge provided Blue Care with the funds through their Hand Heart Pocket program which enabled the recent build. John Collins, Treasurer of the Lodge, said Hand Heart Pocket was established to provide financial assistance to Masonic Lodges in Queensland who wish to donate to a cause in their district. The Mareeba Garden Settlement’s new palliative care room is set to bring much-needed relief and an improved quality of life for sufferers in what is an underutilised form of care. For those wanting information on the palliative care room and its services, you can find out more at www. dailycare.com.au or you can visit the Mareeba Garden Settlement Aged Care Facility at 7 Macrae Street, Mareeba.

MAREEBA LIONS 60 years of service to the community
Lions members recognised at celebration
RECOGNITION: Mareeba Lions Gilbert Teitzel, Enrico Cabassi, VDG/DGE Gary Young, David Mills and Ron Blundell.
AS the Mareeba Lions Club celebrated their 60th Charter Anniversary Dinner last Monday, it was a chance to acknowledge those who have made a significant contribution to Lions.
One such honour which is steeped in tradition is being named a Life Member of Lions International, an honour which long-serving Lions Club members Ron Blundell and David
Mills were the recipients of on Monday night. Life Membership of Lions International is granted to a member who has maintained continuous active membership as a Lion for 20 or more years and has rendered outstanding service to the community and the Lions Association. Mr Blundell’s involvement in the Mareeba Lions Club has been all-encompassing since joining the club in 1978, most notably of which includes being a member of the committee which envisaged and built the Mareeba Heritage Centre. Added to that, Mr Blundell
has been recognised by the club with a Melvin Jones Fellowship and a Richardson Award. Fellow Lions International inductee Mr Mills has also been recognised by the Mareeba Lions Club with a Melvin Jones Fellowship Award, and has served in the roles of Director, Treasurer and President in his relatively short time with the Mareebabased club. Mr Mills joined Lions in 1979, however didn’t transfer to the Mareeba Lions Club until 2011. Despite only having an eight year tenure with the club in Mareeba, Mr Mills has managed
to make a considerable impact within the community. Other Mareeba Lions members recognised on the night were Gilbert Teitzel and Enrico Cabassi, who received a certificate for 25 and 15 years of service respectively. While Monday’s event provided the opportunity to celebrate the wonderful work Mareeba Lions Club members have done for many decades, it also saw new members welcomed to the club. One such person who was invited to become a member of the Mareeba Lions Club was Lindsay Reedman.
Mr Reedman was presented his emblem pin by his sponsor Tom Braes, therefore signifying his membership of the club. Mareeba Lions Club President Denis McKinley said they are extremely proud and happy to have Lindsay as a member.
New Mareeba Lions Club member Lindsay Reedman.
Borzi acknowledged for commitment to Lions ONE of the Mareeba Lions Club’s most respected Life Members Mick Borzi was recognised for his outstanding commitment to the not-for-profit organisation at the Mareeba Lions’ 60th Charter Anniversary Dinner held at the Mareeba Leagues Club on Monday. Mr Borzi’s Lions Club resume is an extensive one, having served as the President, Zone Chairman and District Governor in his storied 60 year career with the club. In his time with the Mareeba Lions Club, Mr Borzi has been presented with the Melvin Jones Award, the Progressive Pin, International President’s Award and the Ambassador of Goodwill Award.
Added to that, Mr Borzi is a Life Member of Lions International and was one of just 20 from throughout Australia who were honoured with the Lismore Medal and the Pioneer Lion Award at the 50th Anniversary of Lions in Australia Convention held in Lismore in 1997. In recognition of his immense commitment to the Lions in Australia and the Mareeba Lions Club, on Monday night Mr Borzi was a recipient of the William R Tresise Fellow Award. The award is named after the founder of Lions in Australia, William R Tresise, and is considered as one of the Lions’ most meaningful honours that can be bestowed upon a long-serving member.
Mr Borzi said he is honoured to be named a William R Tresise Fellow Award and 60 year Charter Monarch recipient. “It is extremely humbling,” he said. “I am the only founding member still alive and to be recognised in this fashion is a great feeling. “When one serves to help the community you don’t expect awards, however it nice to receive them nonetheless.” Mr Borzi said he owes a great deal of gratitude to the Lions Club for the integral role it has played and continues to play in his life. “I joined the club in August, 1958 at 25 years of age and had no public speaking experience,”
he said. “And being involved with Lions gave me the confidence in life like nothing else ever has, so much so I believe it was my involvement with the organisation that gave me the foundation to seek public office.” Mr Borzi said he would like to thank the Lions Club and encouraged younger people to put their hand up and become involved with the organisation. “I think we should all try to give something back to the community, and the Lions Club provides us with a fantastic opportunity to do so,” he said. “It is a club with phenomenal people who do wonderful things for the betterment of the community.”
Mareeba Lions Club member Mick Borzi was the recipient of the William R Tresise Fellow Award having served the organisation for the better part of 60 years.

made us more in-tune and hopefully it will push us to participate in more community events together. “That is the way to build an unbreakable bond in this community.” Imam Jappie said he would like to thank the Mareeba and Tableland locals for their compassion in what has been a deeply sad time for the Muslim community. Imam Jappie noted that he would also like to recognise the Mareeba Seventh Day Adventist Church for taking time to visit the Mosque on the weekend and say a prayer for the victims of the attack.

Big Day Out at MSS
Mareeba State School students Latarnia Riley, Bradley Williams and Deacan Williams who performed dances on the day.
STUDENTS, staff members and parents were on hand for Mareeba State School’s Big Day Out last Friday. Big Day Out is an initiative at MSS that provides parents a greater insight into the practices at the primary school all while celebrating education and learning through the eyes of the students. As part of the day, visitors were able to meet the school’s staff, visit classrooms and were treated to a morning tea. Added to that, there was a dance performance courtesy of the school’s indigenous students and a musical routine played by the MSS rock band. Deputy Principal Nyree Burton said the day was about making everyone in the MSS
school community feel welcome. “Big Day Out has been running here for about a decade, and it started in conjunction with Mulungu,” she said. “It’s a great way to get our parent groups further involved in the school and show them the wonderful things happening at the school. “In the last few years we’ve also made a concerted effort to get the kids more involved also, and you saw that through the dance and musical performances today. “And as it relates to the indigenous students who participated in the dance performance today, it enabled them the chance to show their culture in a really positive way.”
www.theexpressnewspaper.com.au
Mrs Burton said the student performances are an indication of the push MSS are making at celebrating the talented individuals the school boasts. “We are trying to implement events each term that will allow students to showcase their talent, whatever that may be,” she said. “Talent doesn’t just have to be on the sporting field, so we feel providing students with other avenues to display their gifts will be really beneficial moving forward.” Friday also saw a free dress day at the school, with all coin donations going towards GIVIT, a charity that raises money for those affected by the Queensland floods.

Electric ants pose threat on Tablelands GENEROUS: Tom Braes, Tableland Hardware Mareeba assistance Manager Carlie Lawrance, Ida Portella and Mareeba Men’s Shed president Kent Duffield.
Men’s Shed receive generous sponsorships Each business allocated $550 as part of the sponsorship, and in doing so went into a draw to win two flights to any capital city in Australia courtesy of Ida Portella Business and Travel Services. “We had a big expansion at the shed recently, so this money will be really important in helping us provide members greater access to assets and equipment so they can participate in projects,” Mareeba Men’s Shed President Kent Duffield said.
THE Mareeba Men’s Shed will now have money to go towards much-needed tools and machinery thanks to the generosity of five local businesses. Cairns Hardware, Claude Caters Mensland, Tablelands Earthmoving and Raw Materials, Mareeba Sheds and Gas and the Mareeba Leagues Club kindly sponsored the Mareeba Men’s Shed to help them financially cater for their growing membership.
“We visited quite a few businesses around town seeking their support, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank the five businesses who came on board – it means a lot to the Men’s Shed.” The winner of the draw was Cairns Hardware, who will be graciously donating their winnings to the Donald family, whose son Joey was diagnosed with a severe brain injury after a horror horse fall last year. “He’s now down in Brisbane
receiving treatment, and his family is having to fly back and forth from their home in Yungaburra,” Tableland Hardware Mareeba Assistant Manager Carlie Lawrance said. “We thought this would be a great opportunity to help out where we can and ease some of the burden on the family. “We like to give back to the community and we’re proud to be able to give this to such a worthy cause.”

ally funded program, 50% of which comes from the Federal Government and the remaining 50% is spread between all states and territories. “The aim of the program is to eradicate electric ants from Far North Queensland, which involves treating known infestations and trying to find any remaining infestations,” he said. “Surveillance is conducted by our field team using sausage lures and a variety of traps and the world’s only electric ant odour detection dog unit, currently consisting of two handlers and three dogs. “Treatment is conducted using granular bait, which has been specifically developed for use against electric ants - it breaks down within 12 hours in direct sunlight and within a few days in soil.” Mr Morton said infestations are generally treated a minimum of three times depending on their size and the difficulty of the terrain. “The program is heavily reliant on the help of the general public,” he said. “Residents are best placed to know what is happening in their own gardens.” If you have been stung or have noticed changes in your garden, be sure to notify Biosecurity Queensland by registering online for a yard check at https://daf.qld.gov. au/anthunt, or by calling the call centre on 132 523.
THE Department of Agriculture and Fisheries is calling on Tablelands residents to actively help thwart potential biodiversity threats through the Electric Ant Eradication Program. Electric ants are one of the world’s most invasive pests that can affect human health and lifestyle, blind pets and damage the environment. They also have to capacity to severely impact agricultural industries. Electric ants were first detected on the Tablelands in Kuranda in 2010, with infestations reported as recent as last month. Coordinator of the Electric Ant Eradication Program Gary Morton said there have been a total of 20 infestations recorded across the towns of Kuranda, Speewah and Koah since the first detection in 2010. “We are currently dealing with these infestations, but we ask people to book in for a free yard check, especially if they have bought or swapped pot plants, brought mulch onto their property or had any landscape work done,” he said. “Electric ants are spread mainly through the swapping of potted plants and other plant material, and the dumping of green waste. “Booking your property or business in for a free yard check provides the community with confidence that they do not have electric ants. “Our staff is also trained to identify yellow crazy ants and some tropical weeds such as Miconia so also check for these other biosecurity risks.” Mr Morton said the National Electric Ant Eradication Program is a nation-

Coles and ALDI Gardening for better health finally increase milk prices DAIRY farmers across the country have received some further good news after Coles and ALDI announced last week that they will be increasing their Coles Brand and Farmdale fresh milk prices by 10 cents a litre. Coles Brand and Farmdale fresh two and three litre varieties will now cost consumers $2.20 and $3.30 respectively. Coles’ and ALDI’s decision comes just a month after their biggest competitor Woolworths increased their private label milk by 10 cents a litre, prompting questions as to whether the supermarkets felt pressure to follow suit. Member for Hill Shane Knuth has been a strong advocate for fairer milk prices for dairy farmers for a number of years, and while he noted that this is a great gesture by the supermarket giants, he believes it is somewhat of a façade. “Although the 10 cent increase is set to help many dairy farmers throughout Queensland and Australia, there is still not enough being done,” he said. “Even with these increases, there is still uncertainty around whether the industry will be able to be saved. “We need to ensure that the 10 cents of every litre of milk sold is going directly to the dairy farmer in all milk producing states.”
Queensland Dairyfarmers’ Organisation (QDO) President Brian Tessman said he is delighted with Coles’ and ALDI’s announcement last week. “They have recognised that a fixed base price for milk was unsustainable and it is great that Coles appears keen to play a key role in helping move the Australian dairy industry forward,” he said. “$1 milk is dead and gone and it’s time to move on. We’re looking forward to working closely with all retailers, processors and government to address the larger systemic issues within the dairy industry. Finding and implementing long term, sustainable structural reforms are our next goal and getting there will need to be a concerted effort by all parties.” Mr Tessman stated that QDO have never said a 10 cent increase was their end goal. “It’s nowhere near enough,” he said. “While all dairy farmers appreciate the goodwill of the Australian public in response to the drought, at the end of the day we can’t survive on charity and don’t want to. “We simply want to get on with business and make sure that we can continue to provide Australians with fresh dairy produce”
A MESSAGE of the enormous health benefits of garden therapy was spread over the weekend as the Mareeba Garden Centre held an event in celebration of the fifth annual National Garden Releaf Day over the weekend. There were 60 garden centres across Australia participating in Green Releaf Day, which aims to raise greater awareness of the health benefits linked to a person spending 30 minutes a day in a garden. Mareeba Garden Centre owner Joy Paterson said the weekend’s event raised money for Beyond Blue, a not-for-prof-
it organisation helping those with mental health disorders. “Mental health is such a big issue in our society and it needs addressing,” she said. “And our event is encouraging people to enjoy the outdoors and experience the wonderful things gardening has to offer. “I have been gardening for as long as I remember, and I must say, I don’t feel old. “I get up in the morning and I have a purpose which is great.” Ms Paterson took time to thank those who contributed to the annual fundraiser.
Mareeba Garden Centre promoted the known health benefits of spending 30 minutes a day in the garden over the weekend.
“I would like to thank those who donated books, it was a great gesture,” she said. I would also like to recognise Enviromart Australia, who donated our door prize this

Jessop’s celebrate 60 years of marriage Mareeba Men’s Shed’s Roland Hill, John Jennings, Ron Cox, Kent Duffield, Cec Ayliffe and Dean Thomas with Federal Member for Kennedy Bob Katter.
Men’s Shed’s much needed grant FEDERAL Member for Kennedy Bob Katter was in Mareeba last Wednesday to meet with members of the Mareeba’s Men Shed after they were granted $6,500 under the National Shed Development Programme (NSDP). The NSDP has been administered by The Australian Men’s Shed Association (AMSA) on behalf of the Australian Government since 2010, and goes a long way in financially supporting new and existing sheds throughout the country. Mareeba Men’s Shed President Kent Duffield said the grant will go towards building solar panels for their workshop roof. “Our numbers are continuing to grow and with that comes the need for the use of more electrical goods, tools and machinery,” he said. “That in turn means for a greater cost of power, so this will help us keep that at bay somewhat – which is crucial as we’re quite limited in our funding.” The Mareeba Men’s Shed applied for the grant in October of last year, and he wanted to recognise fellow Men’s Shed members for their help throughout the application process. “Obviously we would like to thank the AMSA and politicians such as Bob for their support,
however ultimately the people responsible for this grant are those who put the effort in to apply,” he said. “It was a long and tedious process and a number of the Mareeba Men’s Shed members gave up hours of their time to help, so I would like to thank them.” Mr Katter said he is a strong supporter of the initiative.
“We have long supported the Men’s Shed in its efforts to increase community participation and help make communities stronger,” he said. “Improving the work spaces of the men will greatly benefit the Men’s Shed members and their various invaluable projects.” Mr Katter said looking after the wellbeing of the male population was extremely valuable, particularly in rural and regional farming communities. “Supporting the wellbeing of people in the communities throughout my electorate, particularly men, is of utmost importance and we support any endeavour to help boost it,” he said. Cardwell Shed Inc, the Herberton Men’s Shed and Ravenshoe Men’s Shed also received grants.
THE sanctity of marriage is something that is held dear to the hearts of many people around the world who pledge their vows to their significant others. That commitment brings its many challenges, which is why Ian and Florence Jessop’s marriage can act as a source of inspiration for many young couples. Mr and Mrs Jessop celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary last Saturday at the Mareeba Leagues Club surrounded by immediately family. Mr and Mrs Jessop’s romance blossomed quickly, as they were courting each other for just six months before getting married on March 21, 1959. Mr Jessop said their longstanding relationship has been one built on love, compromise and mutual respect. “You can’t afford to be one-sided in your marriage,” he said. “You always have to think about your other half and ultimately I think that is the key to a long and happy relationship. “I think marriage can act as a great example for other areas of life too, as it’s important to give and take. “A problem with some people is that they only want to take and are reluctant to give, which can often mean the breakdown of relationships.” Mrs Jessop said a stable family foundation was also a key component in forging and maintaining such a strong mar-

riage. “Firstly we are definitely compatible,” she said. “We have our disagreements just like any other couple however we make sure we listen to each other. “We were fortunate to raise
two wonderful daughters Pat and Brenda who are so important to Ian and I, and we are so proud of them. “We are also blessed to have four grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. “That strong family unit is
something that is being lost in this day and age which is really sad to see.” Mr and Mrs Jessop are yet another example of the abundance of influential members the Mareeba community has had in helping shape this town.

Mareeba Races called off again due to rain
Mareeba Turf Club is yet to host a race day this year due to rain.
THE Mareeba Turf Club yet again had to cancel their race day over the weekend due to inclement weather. Saturday marks the third race event in a row that has been called off in Mareeba because of rain, raising questions as to the negative impacts these abandoned race meets could have on horse racing in Mareeba. Secretary of the Mareeba Turf Club Allan Holmes said it is extremely frustrating to have to cancel another meet. “It is a huge cost to all involved, so I would’ve like to
have been given more time to determine whether it should be called off or not,” he said. “Sometimes I think the authorities can be a bit quick to make their decision. “It not only costs the club as we have to prepare the track and the facilities, but it’s also a financial burden to the trainers in the region. “There are more than 20 horses that are trained at the Mareeba track and they are unable to see those returns when meets are constantly cancelled. “There was $35,000 in prize
money up for grabs on the weekend and because of the weather it was no longer available.” Mr Holmes said he was uncertain whether Queensland Racing would allow the Mareeba Turf Club to reschedule Saturday’s meet. “I’m not sure if they’ll give us another date or whether they’ll make us wait until our next scheduled meet on Saturday, June 1,” he said. “We are still waiting to hear back on their decision.”
local inventions wanted THE region’s rural and agricultural innovators are invited to showcase their inventions at the 2019 2019 Rotary FNQ Field Days in May. Every year the three-day event – northern Australia’s largest exhibition of all things agriculture – provides a platform for innovators to exhibit and showcase their inventions, with many aspiring inventors capitalising on the exposure to take their invention to the next step. Innovations Showcase coordinator Charlie Martens said the format of the 2019 competition has simplified to make it more applicable to today’s innovation space. “Awards will be presented for the best innovation in the School Student Future Farming competition as a way of fostering the in-
novative spirit at a young age,” Mr Martens said. “Senior innovators will be provided with an opportunity to showcase their inventions with free demonstration space before an audience of thousands of people, providing marketing exposure money can’t buy.” Previous competition participants say exposure at the event has been incredibly helpful, enabling them to effectively get their message and their product out to a specific audience. Peter Beecham, whose ATV Lifeguard – a flexible crush protection device designed to fit onto any quad bike with a steel rack - won in 2017, said the product had prospered over the past 18 months. “The competition gives people the chance to see different
www.theexpressnewspaper.com.au
things and even what other inventors are up to,” he said. “Getting a product to market is complex process so anything that helps you get a feel for whether there’s a reception for that particular product, or gives you an opportunity to finesse and further develop the product, absolutely it makes the process a little easier.” Entries need to be lodged online at www.fnqfielddays.org.au Those submitted by 1 April will be included in the event’s official exhibitor guide free of charge. The New Machine of the Field Days award returns this year also, for those exhibitors showcasing state-of-the-art equipment released onto the national market in the past 12 months. The event will be held on May 29,30 and 31 at the Mareeba Rodeo Grounds

Speak up on proposed Solar Farm Residents of ‘Rangeview’ are encouraged to familiarise themselves very quickly regarding the proposed Solar Farm proposed for Marnane Road (foot of Rangeview). For many residents, the proposed vegetation buffer of 10 metres wide and 2.5 metres high will not eliminate the ‘Glint and Glare’ resulting from this development. Their outlook over agricultural land will vanish. Instead, the agricultural land, which has been farmed for 60 years, will transform into a paddock of reflective metal. There is an abundance of more marginal agricultural land in our shire to facilitate this project. Speak up residents before its too late. Voice your concerns in writing to your Councillor and the TRC. ROSS MATTHEWS TOLGA

the world. So it would be better to lobby for lower costs and not higher wages. Lower prices and more efficiency will benefit everyone. Higher wages increase costs and inflation as it cost business or the government more to employ people. This makes it harder to profitably export and it destroys both industries and employment opportunities. Also, if one group wants a wage rise, others tend to follow. A solution is to lobby for lower costs and less taxes on essential goods and services. This would not only benefit wage earners, but also benefit the poorest people earning less than the minimum wage. The poorest people that include small businesses and pensioners would not benefit from higher wages. However, they would benefit from lower costs. RICHARD HOLE TOLGA
Katter Party following in Labor’s path It was the Katter Party that voted with the Labor Palaszczuk Government last term to introduce compulsory pref-
erential voting for state elections. They did it for their own political advantage, and no surprise, without consultation. Now we have Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk proposing compulsory preferential and senate style proportional voting for Local Governments. The Katter’s are Labor preference whispers. It’s time they declared their hand on Annastacia Palaszczuk’s pathetic plans for Local Government. I doubt the Katter’s will support the hard working local Mayors and Councillors who are leading the recovery efforts in communities that have been hit by natural disasters. 70% of Queenslanders and their own Councils are against these proposed changes – but I bet the Katter’s will go against the majority. Annastacia Palaszczuk’s priorities are all wrong and the Katter’s are following them down the same path. ANN LEAHY MP Shadow Minister for Local Government
New Barron Fall’s lookout opens
THE Skyrail Rainforest Cableway is set to add to its tourism appeal after they officially opened The Edge Lookout on Monday. The Edge Lookout is a steel and glass cantilever structure located at Barron Fall’s Station that will provide access to unimpeded panoramic views of the waterfall and down along the gorge. For those who aren’t fainthearted, The Edge Lookout features a transparent section of the boardwalk suspended some 160 metres above the
Gorge which visitors can stand on. Skyrail’s Managing Director Craig Pocock said the design of The Edge Lookout allows guests to enjoy an exclusive perspective of the Barron Falls and Gorge. “It is a very exciting development and yet another great reason for visitors to choose Tropical North Queensland as a preferred destination,” he said. The Edge Lookout is the centrepiece of a package of significant investment from
Skyrail including the recently launched Rainforest Discovery Zone and multimedia trilingual App. “The project is part of Skyrail's ongoing program of reinvestment in the lead up to our milestone 25 year celebrations in 2020,” Mr Pocock said. “We are passionate about connecting people with our World Heritage rainforest, and The Edge Lookout is another truly progressive way of sharing this passion with the public.”

Local ladies vying for 2018 Bride of the Year TWO women who have plenty of history on the Tablelands have the chance to win a prestigious national award. Selena Williams and Holly Oosen are in the running for True Bride Magazine’s ‘2018 Bride of the Year’. Selena and Holly are two of just 22 finalists from across the country and will be hoping their photographs and story from their special day will resonate with voters. The winner of the competition will be decided by who receives the most votes, with voting closing at midnight on March 31. The winner of the competition will receive $2,000 in prize money. “I wasn’t really sure whether I wanted to do it at first but my family and friends encouraged me to nominate,”
Selena Williams said. “I’m involved in a lot of charity work in the community and they felt this would be a good opportunity for me to do something for myself. “I’ve been fortunate enough to have a number of the Lions Clubs in the region supporting me and it would be a really nice feeling to win the award. “Ultimately it’s not about the money for me, I would just love recognition for what a special day my wedding day was on the Mornington Peninsula.” Holly Oosen also heard about the competition secondhand, after her mother notified her of it and encouraged her to apply. “I saw it as a great opportunity to share my husband and
I’s wonderful day and I have really enjoyed being apart of the competition,” she said. “Since entering, the support from family and friends has been overwhelming – I understand for a lot of people they can be quite apprehensive about voting in these competitions, however in this case everyone has been so helpful and supportive. “If I’m lucky enough to win, my husband and I will be using the prize money and putting it towards a house, so it will definitely be a worthwhile competition to have taken part in and I encourage any brides out there to apply for 2019 True Bride of the Year.” For those interested in voting, you can do so by visiting www.truebride.com.au and following the prompts.

Mareeba-Dimbulah Irrigation Scheme Decision
Love and best wishes from Bruno Jnr and Debbie.
The Queensland Government has assessed the business case proposal for transitioning the Mareeba-Dimbulah channel irrigation scheme to local management arrangements (LMA) whereby local irrigators would own and operate it.
In Memoriam
The assessment found too much uncertainty as to whether the transition to LMA would deliver the best outcome for the long-term sustainability of the scheme. This means the most viable option for irrigators and customers at this time is for SunWater to continue the operation and maintenance of the scheme in partnership with the local community. This decision was based on an assessment of the business case against the principles governing the local management arrangements project, including customer support, value for money and financial viability. It was unclear whether sufficient benefits to the taxpayer could be achieved from the transition to LMA. There was also uncertainty as to whether there was a strong level of support from customers which is essential for the scheme to succeed under LMA.
Matthew Miles 13.9.1990 - 26.3.2012
Love you always, forget you never.
Love Mum.
SunWater is looking forward to continued engagement with its customers to take advantage of the significant knowledge and experience of the local irrigation customers and build on the knowledge generated through the process. We thank everyone who has contributed to the LMA process and in particular acknowledge the efforts of the Mareeba-Dimbulah interim LMA board established to develop the options presented to government.
The Mareeba-Dimbulah irrigation scheme remains a critical part of the economy of North Queensland, an essential contributor to the State’s agricultural sector, and a key source of regional employment. SunWater will continue to own and operate the scheme and will be engaging with customers to establish a new Mareeba-Dimbulah customer engagement process.

Boxers at War 4 hits Mareeba TABLELANDS boxing fans will have the opportunity to watch some of the region’s best talent battle it out in the squared circle as the fourth annual Bryde’s Boxing Gym’s Boxers At War tournament takes place this Saturday. The event will be held at the Sports Hall on Walsh Street, Mareeba, and will feature 10-15 amateur fights; with a Bryde’s Boxing Title Belt up for grabs in four of the scheduled bouts. The main event of the evening will be storied Far North Queensland amateurs Michael Lees and Raymond Cupitt, both of whom share multiple state and national amateur boxing titles between them. “Mick Lees is a very wellestablished amateur boxer who will be making the trip up from Cairns,” Bryde’s Boxing Gym owner and operator Wayne Bryde said “He has won a couple of prestigious titles and will be looking to impress in what is a fantastic and competitive match-up. “His opponent Raymond Cupitt fights out of Yungaburra and is coming off a year lay-off,
however he is a three-time Australian champion so I’m expecting a strong performance out of him. “This fight has drawn considerable hype on Facebook and it is shaping up to be an unbelievable main event.” Bryde’s said this tournament provides a great opportunity to showcase the abundance of boxing talent Far North Queensland boasts, particularly in Mareeba. “Mareeba is a very strong boxing community and there’s a clear passion for the sport here, so I love the chance to host events like Boxers At War on the Tablelands,” he said. “Boxing is going through a resurgence in North Queensland which is great to see, so hopefully this event will be a huge success and I can bring another tournament back to Mareeba soon. “Boxers At War gives the fighters, particularly up-andcoming prospects the opportunity for greater exposure and that’s really important for the growth of the sport here on the Tablelands.” Added to the much-anticipated main bout, the remainder of
the card will also feature exceptional amateur boxers from 15 clubs across North Queensland. “Another boxer worth mentioning who will be on the card is local Matthew Carroll,” Bryde said. “He is the current Australian champion, a two-time Queensland champion and the Golden Gloves champion, so he is another fighter who will surely provide plenty of excitement on the night.” Bryde said he is expecting a strong crowd on hand and encouraged residents within the region to come to the Mareeba Sports Hall for a night of great boxing. Bryde also said he would like to thank Bruce Watkin, Mareeba Shire Council and Girle’s Sign shop for sponsoring the event. For those wanting to attend the sweet science event this weekend, Boxers At War 4 will take place this Saturday and will start at 6:30pm. Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for children and can be purchased at the door. There are still ringside seats available. To book, contact Wayne Bryde on 0423 941 297 or on 4092 4112.

EXPRESS SPORT PORT Gladiators look to hit back in round one
Bull riding comes to town to support Hospital Foundation
THE Gladiators will have the opportunity to avenge their preseason defeat this Saturday as they take on arch-rivals the Atherton Roosters at Mungalli Creek Dairy Stadium. Their tight preseason affair last weekend in Mareeba provided both playing units and their coaching staff an opportunity to identify areas they performed well in as well as areas of deficiency. A lack of execution, particularly in the second half proved too difficult to overcome for the Mareeba outfit as the Roosters finished the game extremely strong. The Roosters on the other hand will be looking to get off to a better start this weekend as they displayed lacklustre defence by conceding two quick tries in the game’s opening stanza. However their ability to rally in the final twenty minutes and secure the win gives further credence to their preseason reputation as being one of the teams to beat in 2019. For those interested in attending, the A-Grade fixture will kick off at 7pm and will be preceded by the reserve grade and the women’s games.
The Mareeba Rodeo Association has partnered with the Great Northern Bull Ride Series to bring an action packed bullride to Mareeba, with proceeds going to the Mareeba Hospital Foundation.
of which will see the 2019 Great Northern Bull riding series champion head to Fort Worth Texas to compete as a wildcard entry at the Stockyards championship rodeo. This opportunity will be life changing as it will see the 2019 Great Northern Bull riding champion compete on the world stage of bull riding competing against some of the best bull riders and bucking bulls in the world. The Great Northern bucking chutes and small arena will be setup inside the newly renovated Kerribee Park arena, so you can get up close and personal with the entertainment. Make it a family weekend, pack up the kids and the tent and come out and support the Mareeba Hospital Foundation. The free camping area

But the event, which is presented by Ringers Western, will be more than just bull riding, it will be a night to support the local Mareeba Hospital Foundation with proceeds going to this worthy organisation. The 2019 Great Northern Bull ride series will see some of the toughest bucking bulls like Raging Red Ranga, Apollo Creed, Suicidal and Crazy Trucker make the long trip north along with a spread of bull riders from a number of Australian rodeo associations. The bull riders will all be vying for the end of year prize
