Preserving history A group of committed volunteers descended on Mareeba at the weekend to commence dismantling a fabled piece of Australian aviation history – Turn to page 5 for the full story.
Knuth’s key priorities By Justin Fris
MEMBER for Dalrymple Shane Knuth has outlined several key priorities ahead of a busy 2016 in state parliament. The prominent Katter’s Australia Party crossbencher – who is one of four who hold the balance of power in state politics – told The Express he was committed to issues not only within his electorate. “I’ll be continuing to drive the ‘no’ case for four year government terms,” he said. “No gov-
ernment has proven credibility over the last 20 years for deserving an extra year. “Four year terms would result in poorer performing government’s and MP’s - who would take the electorate for granted over three and a half years.” Mr Knuth added: “They would then appear to be all friendly and attempt to hand out goodies in the last year.” The implementation of a reconstruction board is also high on the priority list, with both KAP crossbenchers committed to offering stability and

protection for both the agricultural and rural business sectors. Mr Knuth has also publicly voiced his disdain against proposed cuts to country racing by the current Palaszczuk Government. He vowed to continue the fight for the bush. “Country racing has been absolutely gutted by both governments and previous racing boards,” he said. “We’ll have to continue to fight hard – to ensure that we have the right representation, and allow no more depletion of funding.
“They’ve cut funding and race meetings, almost to the point where they can’t cut anymore. “Country racing is the lifeblood of many rural communities and we’ll (the KAP) be hitting them (the government) hard.” Above all priorities, a better deal financially for the Far North is the fundamental responsibility of Mr Knuth’s role. Mr Knuth said he would continue to lobby hard for a parity of state funds, which could be put toward local education, health, roads and key projects.

FOR young Biboohra duo Leksi and Lene Mukadi (pictured), the experience of a lifetime is only a couple of months away – and they are hoping you can help them on their journey. The pair were recently informed that they will represent Australia (along with two other southern little ones) in upcoming ‘Faces of the Globe’ international beauty pageant – which will be held across London and Disneyland Paris between April 2 and 9. Lene and Leksi’s mother, Tricia, said she was delighted about the opportunities that await the girls and outlined just how formal the pageant process is. “It started last year in August with Lene, when she decided that she wanted to do modelling,” she said. “I said to her that I would try to get her into some catalogue work – but it’s hard up here, because we are out here in the bush. “So I put her on Star Now (a NZ model website), which is where talent scouts look for models, actors and different things.” The girls do not model any swimwear, risqué clothing and no makeup - with Tricia and family ensuring they always perform in a safe and professional forum.
Both Leksi and Lene have had their shoots coordinated locally by talented Yungaburra-based photographer, Melissa Horton. After touching down in London, the girls will participate in three days of pageant training, before completing several interviews, photo shoots and talent components. However in order to realise their dream, the girls have to raise a sizeable total – for the pageant chosen global charity. “The pageant participant who raises the most for the charity is also recognised with an award,” Mrs Mukadi said. The family have begun fundraising earnestly across the Tablelands; and there are several ways that locals can get behind the girls. A special carwash fundraiser will be held at Beaurepaires Mareeba on Saturday morning, along with a $1000 board – which is currently circulating throughout Mareeba, with only 200 spots available at $10 per ticket. New leaders recognised at Biboohra SS BIBOOHRA State School ushered in a new cohort of student leaders last Friday morning, which was healthy attended by parents and locals alike. Formalities were overseen by the school’s Ms Ruth Ernst – along with Hope Musch and Mareeba State High School principal Scott Whybird addressing the parade. Ms Ernst said: “These students have shown that they can listen, they can learn, they can encourage, they can show initiative, they can delegate, they can make decisions, they can evaluate, they can model behaviour, they are organised and communicate clearly.” Biboohra State School’s 2016 student council executive positions are as follows: Mikayla Jean (President), Jordyn Buchgraber (Vice President), Hayley Carlsson (Secretary), Jayden Camp (Treasurer), Tia Moss (Sporting and Cultural Ambassador – Bilwon) and Akaysia Boyle (Sporting and Cultural Ambassador - Kambul) Younger representatives for the 2016 student council executive will be as follows: Jasmine Paroney (Prep), Giuseppe Galati and Madinah Bajramovic (Year 1), Joshua Browning (Year 2), Sam Jean (Year 3), Gabby Jean (Year 4), Ev-Lucy Findlay (Year 5) and Emma Butler (Year 6). Ms Musch – a former student leader at Biboohra SS in 2008 – shared with the students her experiences. “This is a great school to go to and I just love being back here,” she said. “Every single person here is a leader. “You’re a leader because every little thing you do is being watched by others and someone will copy your actions.”

‘A kind hearted professional’ – Dr Mark Bestmann LAST week, Mareeba lost one of its favourite sons. A kind hearted professional – who made the lives of those within his community better – Doctor Mark Bestmann’s sudden passing has touched every piece of Mareeba’s community. It was said of Mark that he wasn’t ‘just a doctor’, he was a friend. A man who worked beyond the call of duty for others and was adored by his family. Tributes via social media continue to justifiably flood in each day, such was Mark’s connection with all sectors of the region. Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Tom Gilmore said Mark was a ‘special individual’ who was committed to his community. “From time to time, a community is graced with a special individual; such a person was Mark Bestmann,” he said. “Mark was a man of deep compassion, professional integrity and a commitment to his community. Mark has left a legacy of a
benchmark of enormously high professional standards; to which others might aspire as they follow in his footsteps. “His recent passing has left an enormous hole in our community, which will clearly be felt by those who he has befriended or worked with; either personally or professionally over the years. “Mark and his family have been an important part of the social structure and cohesion of our community, and his untimely passing is a reminder to us all to embrace this life we have; to accept and try to understand our challenges, and to make the most of every day. “Mark Bestmann was a very special person and our whole community is the richer for his having lived and served, and far the poorer for his untimely passing. “Sally and I are deeply saddened by Mark's passing and express our profound condolences to Margie and her family.” Cairns Hinterland and Hospital Health
Service CEO Julie Hartley-Jones said the local health service deeply saddened by his passing. “I was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Dr Mark Bestmann earlier this week and my thoughts are with his family,” she said. “Dr Bestmann played a huge role in the Mareeba community not only as a doctor but as a community leader, confidant and friend. “Our Health Service is acutely aware of the huge hole Dr Bestmann’s passing leaves in the local community. “Medical, nursing and mental health teams in Mareeba are confident they can take on any of Dr Bestmann’s patients who need care. Health Minister Cameron Dick spoke directly with The Express and said any additional support or resources during this difficult time will be provided for – as long as they are required. If anyone in the community is feeling distressed and needs help, please call Lifeline on 13 11 14, your doctor or the Mareeba hospital.
Below are just a few of the hundreds of tributes posted on The Express Facebook page after the passing of Dr Mark Bestmann... “RIP Dr Bestmann – one of greats. Not only were you a well respected doctor but also a great mentor on the cricket field who helped so many men and women become better people. You will be missed great man.”
“There is a special spot in heaven for such lovely souls who cared for and helped so many. I hope you are at peace now Dr Bestmann. Such a huge hole left in the community, you really were a pillar of strength to so many.”
“You have been one of my biggest supporters. I wouldn’t of been able to do it without you. We have cried, smiled and laughed – a true guiding light to not only myself, but the entire community.”
CCC Qld completes TRC case review CRIME and Corruption Commission Queensland have officially concluded the latest investigations into alleged concerns regarding the Tablelands Regional Council. In a report provided to The Express, the CCC has determined that the investigation was thoroughly assessed by the relevant authorities – with each allegation addressed individually and methodically. The CCC noted the following key points in their findings: “The department’s public official (or delegate) has a statutory obligation to notify the CCC of any suspected corrupt conduct in relation to the matter”. “After assessing the information that was provided, the Department has formed the view that the infor-
mation lacks cognitive evidence sufficient to raise a reasonable suspicion that corrupt conduct has occurred, as alleged. “The information available does not suggest further action by the CCC or any other agency would produce a substantially different outcome.” TRC ratepayer Lyn O’Connor – who filed the new complaints directly with the CCC in October 2015 – said she was disappointed with the response, but not surprised with the final outcome. She vowed to continue to pursue the matter in line with the advice and invitations provided by the CCC and will be forwarding the evidence from scores of witnesses on to relevant authorities across the state.
“RIP Dr Bestmann. You delivered me as a baby, as you did many others, you looked after my whole family, you were my mentor as a medical student and such a lovely and caring person. You will be very missed by so many.”

Mareeba Historical Society opens new WWI exhibit DEDICATED locals gathered at the Mareeba Historical Society last Friday morning, where the final instalment of a series of WW1 exhibits was unveiled to the public. Locals and tourists alike have been able to marvel at a large variety of memorable displays in recent times, which have focused on several different facets of WW1. Some of the themes have included local (Mareeba) soldiers, indigenous soldiers and medical personnel. MHS president John Hammond, Helen Kindt and Carol Pagett were in attendance on the day and spoke descriptively about the new display. “This display is called the ‘non-combatants’,” Ms Pagett said. “It refers to people who put something into the war, but weren’t soldiers or sailors or combatants. “We’ve got ambulance drivers, the stretcher bearers – a lot of those were those who didn’t want to go into war and kill people.
Helen Kindt, John Hammond and Carol Pagett enjoyed last Friday’s unveiling at the Mareeba Historical Society.

Lee Long disagrees with dialogue It is incumbent for a newspaper to report accurately on Council meetings to ensure that the debate held in a public forum and the decisions made are provided to our community in a factual and unbiased manner. The Express’s article on 27 January 2016 entitled ‘Pagani goes into bat for TRC staff’ is misleading and full of inaccuracies. Firstly, the resolution regarding the Local Government Remuneration and Discipline Tribunal Report 2015 states, “that Council receive and note the report.” Councillors did not vote unanimously for a pay rise, the pay rise indicated in the report was recommended by an independent tribunal and by the Local Government Association of Queensland. Secondly, the article states that Cr Pagani attempted to put through a pay rise motion during the confidential component of the meeting. As confidential indicates, these agenda items are not available to the public. Discussions held by councillors when the ordinary meeting is closed are carried out with the expectation that anything said or revealed will be kept private. It is a breach of confidentiality if any councillor shares information from these closed sessions. The fact is, at the Council meeting on 21 January, when the meeting was opened to the public following discussion on the confidential agenda items, Cr Pagani proposed a motion which lapsed for want of a seconder. The Express inaccurately reported

“So they took on other roles; as they wanted to be a part of the war effort, but they didn’t want a gun in their hands to kill someone – they felt they couldn’t do that.” Ms Pagett also highlighted the presence of animals during the First World War – over 16 million, including horses, dogs and camels – with dogs for example, keeping personnel company through good times and bad, while cats were used to eradicate rats from the trenches. “We’ve tried to put together all the interesting and intriguing bits that went on during the war,” she said. Mr Hammond added: “After the exhibit concludes at the end of April, we’ll go back to the history of the Mareeba district Shire – all the information has been gathered here. “We’re not a museum, we gather up the paper history. There’s the mining, the tobacco; anything that has been done in the community (activity) we keep a record of it.”
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR The Express reserves the right to edit letters
that it was lost 3-2. A further motion was put up and carried 4-1 with Cr Pagani voting against the second motion. Thirdly, Cr Pagani makes a completely false statement that staff have not had a pay increase for three years. The truth is that the last pay increase provided to staff under the TRC Certified Agreement was 4 p which was effective to 30 June 2014. A further increase was offered to staff in April last year but was refused. Due to the State Government Industrial Relations reforms, Council has not been able to progress with a new Certified Agreement. Therefore it has been 19 months since staff have had a pay increase. I strongly suggest that you ensure that you get the facts correct before providing misleading information to your readership. I encourage anyone interested in Council decisions to review the meeting minutes and agendas from our website or subscribe to regular electronic newsletters. Rosa Lee Long, Mayor Tablelands Regional Council
Wind farm debate rolls on There is a difference between a small windmill with a piston pump and the large scale wind “farms” which have been proposed. The original windmills had a fixed stroke, while the modern turbines lose their aerodynamic efficiency at overspeed. I cannot understand the comments from the person from South Australia who says there are “no problems” with the wind turbines there. The local news from South Australia shows hundreds of people lined up at the South Australian Government buildings complaining and protesting about the wind turbines. The approvals for wind turbines overseas are in decline. When the turbines need to be replaced, it will require 230 tons of coal for each turbine, plus more for the concrete for each MW of capacity. Who will pay for that? Wind turbines have also been linked to many deaths of bats, birds and so on which can result in an increase in other animals such as locusts. With the problems at Ravenshoe and the concerns about the noise issues (which have also been mentioned overseas by researchers in Germany, Japan and Iran) I think that it would be better if the wind turbines were dismantled, and the authorities take responsibility for their removal. The crew begins to dismantle the ‘Neptune Bomber’ on Sunday at the Beck Museum in Mareeba.
WHILE the stifling humidity last Sunday may have forced several in Mareeba to escape into air conditioned locations, several hard working men toiled through it. A team of committed volunteers from the Queensland Air Museum in Caloundra are currently dismantling a Neptune Bomber, in a bid to preserve aviation history for future generations. The aircraft – which has been housed at the Beck Museum in Mareeba – has been extremely sought after by the team. Such is the sheer size of the aircraft, the dismantling process will take several days. Once this is completed, it will be packed into five lower loader trucks and begin its journey south. QAM president Cameron Elmes said talks to acquire the Neptune Bomber commenced
in the middle of last year, with all discussions both amicable and productive. “Our museum has been around for 42 years (since 1973),” he said. “We’ve got 65 different aircraft currently in our collection. “In the past, we’ve had a few opportunities to land the ‘Bomber’, but they’ve always fallen through.” Mr Elmes said the QAN had been aware of the Neptune Bomber in Mareeba for awhile and added there were several appealing features to it. “It’s the most complete intact aircraft of its kind that we’ve come across – both from interior and exterior perspective.” Neptune Bomber aircraft have long played an important role in protecting the lives of all Australians. From patrolling our borders to completing rescue and recovery missions – the
‘Bomber’ has played an integral role in Australian’s aviation industry. Mr Elmes and his team flew or drove up to the Far North last week – taking time out of their work/life schedules – in a bid to further preserve our past. Due to the familiarity of working together, the group have managed to form into a cohesive unit and fast track the size of the job. “It’s all about preserving aviation and saving aircraft such as the Neptune Bomber for our future generations,” he said. “There’s not too many of them left.” If you would like to learn more about the QAM’s aviation collection, or would like to learn more about aviation in Queensland, please visit: http://qam.com.au/

Margaret Clark honoured by Innot Hot Springs fire brigade
The Clark family were impressed with the new fire truck named in honour of Margaret.
Over 100 people turned up to witness Ravenshoe Café blast victim Margaret Clark remembered forever with a new fire truck being named in her honour. Queensland Fire and Emergency Services Commissioner Katarina Carroll returned to where she grew up, to hand over the keys for the new fire truck to the Innot Hot Springs Rural fire brigade In 1986 - when Margaret moved to Innot Hot Springs – she straight away got involved in helping fundraise for the Innot Hot Springs rural fire brigade.
She was always selling raffle tickets each week and always involved with any other fundraising efforts conducted for the rural fire brigade If the firies were out on a job, she always made smoko and lunch for them while they were working. The people who go out on the fires wanted to do something for her so they talked about it amongst themselves and naming the truck is what they wanted to do Margaret will be sorely missed by everyone involved in the brigade, and the decision to name the truck after her was fitting of her service.
REAL DEAL
KURANDA resident Maggie Herbohn (pictured) has decided to run as a council candidate for Mareeba Shire Council at the upcoming election. Originally from New Zealand, Ms Herbohn has called Kuranda home since 1985. She has worked across a multitude of industries and is committed to transparent processes in local government. Across these industries, she has worked an employee, and a business owner – which has allowed her to see business and growth from a variety of angles. At a community level, Ms Herbohn formed the ‘Kuranda Top of the Range’ neighbourhood watch, along with being the current secretary of the ‘Kuranda District Residents’ group. In terms of key personal policies, Ms Herbohn said she would like to see the formulation of an environmental protection policy (based on community consultation), ensure youth criminal offenders complete community service, along with facilitating transparent local government practices. Additionally, she is also committed to working
closely with the local indigenous community and fostering closer ties. Ms Herbohn said she believed that young citizens across the MSC should be provided greater accessibility and information regarding both local government and the overall election process. “Politics needs to be connected back to the community with social participation, especially with younger voters,” she said. “(This can be achieved by) giving the younger voters opportunities to identify and discuss issues which concern them, by encouraging a positive and active approach.” She added: “We need more online resources that will allow young people to access information. Our election infrastructure is lacking in providing comprehensive, accessible information about local elections. “Isn’t a pity that local schools aren’t encouraged to send students along to attend council meetings so they can see local government in action?” Antisocial behaviour has a tendency to flare up from time to time across the Tablelands – and Ms Herbohn would like to see more youth involvement in the community. “The skate park in Mareeba is a problem for rubbish and graffiti, although security cameras and bins are located,” she said. “Youths need to learn to have pride in their community. (I’d like to see) set up a youth forum, run by younger people. Mareeba has a PCYC, (It’d be great to) set one up in Kuranda.” In her spare time, Ms Herbohn loves spending time with her family, keeping fit and landscaping. She also enjoys the peace and tranquillity of living in Kuranda. “I will take pleasure and enjoy working for the community,” she said. “I believe in the importance of supporting family and community especially through communication and being pro-active. It is a tough world - and by having a strong community, we can help each other.”

Magistrate Tom Braes awarded OAM
20% OFF DiamOnD Jewellery
Mareeba magistrate Tom Braes with wife Karen.
Local magistrate Tom Braes has been informed by the Governor-General’s office in Canberra that he will be receiving an Order of Australia Medal (OAM) for services to the community and law. “I can’t help but feel proud and honoured to receive recognition on the community aspect and the law aspect of the award,” he said. “The law part of it is straight forward – that’s my job – but the community part is very touching to receive. “I think my wife Karen should get a medal just for putting up with me, with her helping me with all the things we’ve accomplished over the years.” In reply, Karen said: “It’s nice to see his dedication and hard work being rewarded. He does put a lot of time and effort into everything he does; he gives everything one hundred percent.” Mr Braes has been a long time member of the Mareeba Lions Club and was the co-ordinator of the Mareeba Lions ‘Youth of the Year’ for a number of years. He is the Christmas raffle co-ordinator; ‘Recycle for
Sight’ co-ordinator, instigator of the ‘Rags to Riches’ programme - of recycling used bedding from the hospital as workshop rags. He co-ordinated the ‘Coast to Coast’ bike ride lunch, co-ordinator of ‘World Sight Day Mareeba 2014’, was on the international board meeting organising committee in Port Douglas 2013 – being responsible for World Sight Day activities in Mossman. Tom is one of two guiding Lions for the new special purpose Lions Club chartered in Kuranda in 2013, (known as the Bulwai Cultural Heritage Lions Club) which will concentrate on indigenous cultural preservation and teaching. Mr Braes has been in law for over 45 years and is the current magistrate at the Mareeba courthouse. Tom will receive his award from the Governor-General at Parliament House in Brisbane in May this year. Once it has all been made official, Mr Braes will be entitled to use the initials OAM after his name.

The old Ravenshoe Swimming Pool was closed in 1999 by the old Herberton Shire. By Justin Fris
SUPPORTERS of a new pool in Ravenshoe have again walked away from a Tablelands Regional Council meeting disappointed. The Ravenshoe Rural Activities Incorporating Sustainable Energy (RAISE) community group had sought $19,275 in financial assistance from the TRC, which would be added to their personal project sum of $8500. This amount would be used to secure the services of Outsource Management Pty Ltd, who were committed to both reviewing an updating RAISE’s feasibility study, which would revolutionise aquatics on the Southern Tablelands. TRC councillors voted for the financial assistance request to be presented to the newly elected council – which would mean a few more months of waiting. Since an initial feasibility study was conducted by RECPLAN in 2012, the scope of the project has changed. After initially flagging interest in building an indoor heated pool - RAISE has expanded their idea – with their
vision of an aquatic and rehabilitation centre extremely popular amongst locals. With a large aging population across the Southern Tablelands, this facility would be extremely beneficial for the region. Ravenshoe’s old pool was closed in 1999 by the old Herberton Shire. Since then, other surrounding towns have received upgrades to their facilities, while Ravenshoe is still waiting patiently. Doreen Mortimore – who has worked tirelessly on bringing RAISE’s vision to life – has travelled on every bump in the road over the last 15 years. She has met with local, state and federal MP’s on the matter. She said all she wants is for the youth in Ravenshoe to have a safe place to swim, along with elderly members of the community having a facility to remain active. “Isn’t it a shame that that the 500 odd children across the three schools in Ravenshoe have to wait a little longer to have a safe place to swim,” she said.
CHHS commences review into Herberton virus outbreak THE Cairns Hinterland Hospital and Health Service have officially commenced a review into the recent virus outbreak at the Herberton Hospital. A serious outbreak of human metapneumovirus was detected at the facility on January 18, with seven people having passed away at the hospital so far in 2016. CHSS CEO Julie Hartley-Jones swiftly announced that a review was currently underway into the incident, with the findings released to the public. “This year we’ve seen seven deaths at Herberton Hospital and although it appears that not all of these were caused by human metapneumovirus, that number is higher than expected,” she said. “One of those who died tested positive to the virus, while several others displayed symptoms consistent with the virus.
“In the interests of being transparent with the families of those who have passed away as well as the Far Northern community, all seven cases will be reported to the coroner. “A review by the Chief Health Officer of Queensland into the Health Service’s response to the viral outbreak at Herberton Hospital is underway with those findings to be released to the public. She added: “As part of that review the Chief Health Officer has met with several families, local staff and other stakeholders. “There are four residents at Herberton Hospital who currently have symptoms consistent with human metapneumovirus however they are recovering and remain in a stable condition.”

Valentine’s Day Dinner
Tolga Hotel is the place to be BIG things are happening at the Tolga Hotel in coming weeks – and that’s not just the exciting new breakfast menu. Patrons regularly travel far and wide to sample several delights on the menu, which range from the signature ‘reef and beef’, to crumbed steak and ravioli. If you love quality local produce, along with approachable and friendly staff, the Tolga Hotel is definitely the place for you. Tolga Hotel manager Shane Srhoj said the venue was excited to launch its new breakfast menu, which will be offered between 7-11am on a Sunday. “The breakfast menu will include eggs benedict, pancakes and a big breakfast – with will be called the ‘Mr T’ (Mr Tolga) breakfast,” he said. “All of our produce is sourced locally and is priced so it is affordable for the family. Our venue is also becoming a new hangout for a lot of local sporting clubs.” An enterprising local businessman, Srhoj said he enjoyed the ‘good challenge’ of the hospitality industry and
enjoyed meeting new people. This enthusiasm has translated to the locals, who overwhelmingly give their thumbs up to the venue. On hot days, the open air dimension of the venue and the beer garden are immensely popular; and many have also welcomed the fact that there are no pokies. Families also don’t have to travel far for entertainment, with a jumping castle provided during lunch hours over the weekend. This Sunday night will see the doors open for a special seafood buffet on Valentine’s Day, with local couples able to wine and dine their beloved in a relaxed and open air setting. Bookings are absolutely essential for this momentous occasion – so in order to reserve your table – please call Shane and the Tolga Hotel team on 4095 4106. Tolga Hotel is open seven days (10am-midnight). Phone 4095 4106. A courtesy bus (within 10km radius) will commence in late February.

ATHERTON HOCKEY SIGN ON An action packed year ahead for Atherton hockey in 2016 The Atherton Tablelands Hockey Association (ATHA) is set to offer players of all ages an action packed year of games and events in 2016. ATHA Grounds and Facilities Officer, Paul Keevers, will sign up himself and his three young children Kate, Adam and Bridie again this year. Not only is Paul a proud parent, he is also involved in coaching at the association. “It’s a great way for the kids to be actively involved in a dynamic team game, develop lifetime friendships and experience the thrill of chasing the ball. That we get to do that as a family just makes it even better,” he said. Gary Toshach, ATHA President, player, and parent of a talented junior, has indicated that 2016 will see the association promote, foster and enhance the game of hockey for all players with some exciting ongoing and new initiatives. The Atherton Tomahawks representative U/18 male and female teams have recently been selected and will represent the association in the Cairns hockey competition. This competition has provided their talented junior players with a chance to expand their skill base and have greater opportunity for selection in state teams, which was the case for local Ben Lowe, an exceptionally talented goalie; who in 2015 was se-

lected in the Qld U/15 State rep team. The Men’s, Ladies and Veterans competitions in 2016 will also offer experienced, new and returning players a great season of hockey, whilst the introduction of a mixed competition for juniors and a band of dedicated coaches and volunteers will improve on the growth of the association. Toshach said: “Hockey is the perfect game to not only get fit, but to have fun in a family friendly environment.” ATHA will be holding two sign on days on February 14 and 21, from 10am until 2pm at Loder Park, Atherton. A 6-a-side round robin competition will also be held on February 21 for anyone interested in having a go and some fun. The hockey season commences on March 12, with ATHA fielding teams from U/6, up to Veterans. All games are held at Loder Park on Saturday’s, with no travel, great canteen facilities, heaps of parking and welcoming faces. Hockey is a fun and inclusive sport for all different ages and abilities. most of what we have at the beginning of the season. Our 13-16 year olds are also preparing for the season and this is the age group we would really like a heap of new or returning players to sign up. Again, we will be equalising the teams and encourage all players interested to come and talk to us on sign on day. Our representative Tomahawks teams are already training and enjoying some very high quality coaching. These teams will contest the secondary division competitions in Cairns on Friday nights. Our women’s competition attracts ladies from 17 to 35 years old and we will have a really good season if all our players return on sign on day. Historically, the girls moving from the junior ranks tend to stray away from us at this point; and we are really keen to have all of them and new players come back and play the season. Each player will be looked after through discussion and included in a team and they are happy to join. We have a goal of four teams - and the managers of these teams are ready to meet with the players and collectively
determine which team they are aligned to or wish to join. We need as many of our players to return as possible and we will have a strong competition. Our Men’s competition is up in the air at the moment, with changes to the fee structure for the C Grade teams that played a home and away season with Cairns last year. Cairns Hockey have changed the rules and we are meeting as a group of men to discuss our preferred direction for the 2016 season, at the Stump Hotel at 5.30pm this Thursday. We will ask all men to come and understand our choices. We can either accept the CHA offer or build our own 9- a -side fully competitive competition at home. We are also intending to enter a team in the Open Men’s state championships this year and wanting to attract our fittest and strongest players back into the club. We have a big season ahead and adding the Vets women’s into the discussion with a four team competition means we are catering for all ages and both genders at our club – we just need players. Come along to sign on – February 14 or 21, at the clubhouse.

The club will welcome all players and supporters at the Loder Park clubhouse and make sure everyone has a team and a great start to the season. This year, our club is again moving forward with the ‘Hooked into Hockey’ program very successful during the off season. We hope to have lots of little people learning and enjoying the game. Children as young as 4 are already signing up for the season. Our
club then moves into competitions for boys and girls aged between 9 and 12 years of age, with a four team completion. All children who sign up will be introduced to their appointed coach and the allocated to a team. The main focus this year is to adjust the teams to ensure equal ability teams are created; thus producing a highly competitive competition. Depending on numbers, we are keen to have single sex competitions – but are fully prepared to have a mixed competition or even a blend of both. Final CDRL fixture released for 2016 By Justin Fris
THE Cairns District Rugby League has officially released its final version of the 2016 premiership season fixture. Since initially releasing a draft fixture, all clubs have had an opportunity to offer feedback and ensure that major anomalies could be addressed. On the Tablelands, both the Mareeba Gladiators and Atherton Roosters are hoping for big seasons –on and off the field. Regular wins translate into more people coming through the gates and spending their hard earned. When crowds and wins are down, it’s not a pretty sight longterm for players or officials.
Both sides have the ingredients to produce winning seasons. In each respective town, the Gladiators and Roosters play an important role in the community. It’s time for more locals to get behind them. The Gladiators have been putting in the hard yards under newly appointed coach Josh Stowers, with excellent numbers at training. Further down the Kennedy Highway, Dean Howard is also overseeing a quality pre season program, with the younger Roosters responding well to his regime. The much anticipated Tablelands Derbies will be held on May 7 in Atherton and on June 18 in Mareeba.
ATHERTON ROOSTERS – 2016 FIXTURE ANALYSIS
MAREEBA GLADIATORS – 2016 FIXTURE ANALYSIS
The Good: Howard’s men have been given a positive start to their season with three home matches and a bye during the first six rounds. They would view all home matches (Kangaroos, Mossman/ Port Douglas and Mareeba) as winnable, along with their away trips to Yarrabah and Edmonton.
The Good: The Gladiators will enjoy the confides of the Tablelands for five of the opening seven rounds. They will only travel to Kangaroos (round four) and Tully (round two) during this time, with a derby in Atherton scheduled in round six. Early wins are essential to set up a finals run.
The Bad: Rounds 7-11 will be a tremendous challenge for the Roosters, facing Ivanhoes (away), Brothers (away), Innisfail (home) and Tully (away).
The Bad: Mid season will be a true test of character for Stowers’ men, who will face Yarrabah (away) Suburbs (home) and Brothers (away) between rounds 9 and 11.
The Ugly: Hopes of a finals berth may well come down to the final three rounds. The CDRL have done the Roosters no favours in this stretch, assigning them Brothers (home) Innisfail (away) and Tully (home).
The Ugly: The final stretch between Rounds 17 and 22. Innisfail (away), Edmonton (away), Ivanhoes (away), Yarrabah (home) Suburbs (away) and Brothers (home).

Bright future for girls basketball in Mareeba By Justin Fris
BASKETBALL in Mareeba took another giant leap forward recently, after the success of a girls-only basketball clinic. Held at the Mareeba PCYC Sports Hall, 48 girls aged between 5 and 16 took part in a memorable session of skill fundamentals and teamwork.
All skill stations were overseen by local female basketballers, who took time out of their work commitments to help foster development of the new generation. Mareeba Basketball Association official Tamar Myrteza said the association were delighted with the response and that further events would be planned throughout the year.

THE term ‘family club’ is often loosely tossed around the sporting industry, with many giving little thought to what it actually means. However in 2016 at the Mareeba United Football Club, the opportunity for an entire family to play at one club is possible. From a three year old participating the ‘Squirts’ program, through to Mum playing in the ladies squad – MUFC has something for everyone across all age groups, abilities and genders. “It is something pretty special, where the entire family can train, play and be together all the one place; enjoying the
sport, it truly does make it a family club,” MUFC premier men’s coach Alex Srhoj said. MUFC junior president Jodie Allen added that she encouraged new players to join the club, with all abilities catered for in an inclusive environment. For those interested in signing up, MUFC’s junior sign on day will be held this Saturday (February 13) at Borzi Park between 10am and midday. Heat clinical in win over Leichhardt
The FNQ Heat continued their impressive pre season campaign last Saturday night. By Justin Fris
THE FNQ Heat continued their pre season friendly campaign in style, with a workmanlike 3-0 win over the Leichhardt Lions last Saturday evening in White Rock. Both sides were engaged in an arm-wrestle until midway through the second half, when the Heat’s class and fitness eventually broke their weary opponants. With the mercury indicating a 96 per cent level of humidity at kick off, the evening was always going to be a challenge for both sides. Heat technical director Craig Midgley – who was filling in for Tim Campbell on the night – offered positive feedback and instructions to his men from the off. Jamie Gosling and Charlie Beverley began brightly for the visitors, motoring around the pitch almost at will. Leichhardt were prepared to sit back and let the Heat boss their way around the pitch, although they need occasionally make a foray forward. A hatful of early sighters and half chances came and went for the visitors, with Jamie Carroll and Kieran Sandilands giving the Lions defence several headaches. To the Lions credit, they dug in and defended heartily. They successfully kept their shape and were in no way overawed by the occasion. Despite the match deadlocked at 0-0 heading into the second half, Midgley spoke calmly and confidently to the players.
He spoke of remaining patient, to continually deny Leichhardt time and space and that their resolve would see them through. Sure enough, it only took 15 minutes before Mareeba’s own Jamie Carroll provided a world class strike from 25 yards. Carroll’s effort would be complimented 13 minutes later, with Kieran Sandilands providing another nomination for the highlight reel. Perched on the upper left fringe of the 18 yard box, Sandilands turned his defender inside out and slickly curled his effort high into top right corner of the net. By now, the hosts were struggling to keep up with their opponents, as superior fitness and accountability from the visitors came to the fore. The Heat would complete their productive evening in injury time, after a Leichhardt defender unleashed his inner Diego Maradona. Gosling clinically dispatched the ensuing spot kick. Post-match, Midgley said: “For the boys where they are at the moment, I think it was a great workout. A lot of credit to Leichhardt – they’ve got an organised unit there – and it’s hard coming to these teams because it is their cup final. They drop off and they are very compact. “It was a good test of how patient we can be with the ball and that is what the boys learnt. If you can move the ball quickly and let the ball do all the work, things will open up eventually.”

Bandits defeat Norths in stifling humidity By Justin Fris
THE Mareeba Bandits Cricket Club concluded their 2015/2016 one day campaign with a comprehensive 60 run victory over Norths at Griffiths Park in Cairns last Sunday. Stifling heat and humidity caused havoc for players and spectators alike, which caused over rates to be slower than usual. The match commenced at the earlier start time of 8.30am and clearly the Mareeba lads ate their wheet bix. Mareeba’s total of 5/193 (off 30 overs) was always going to be a challenge for the hosts, who have had an indifferent season form-wise in the one day format. Brendan Payne top scored for the
Bandits with 77, with Robert ‘Bomber’ Adams (37) and Ben Turner (22) providing solid cameos. Norths began their run chase hesitantly and it became apparent early in the innings that they would struggle to chase down the required target of 194. The Bandits received excellent service with the ball from Ben Turner 5/23 (4 overs), Rowan Foxwell (2/13 off 2 overs) and Lachlan Ford (1/9 off 3 overs). Prior to the commencement of play, Mareeba was sitting in 3rd on the one day ladder. In order to qualify for this Sunday’s final, they required either Rovers or Innisfail to lose their respective match.
