‘With honour they served’

MAREEBA commemorated ‘National Police Remembrance Day’ last Tuesday, in a respectful, dignified ceremony. Local residents and current serving officers paid their respects to those who have made the ultimate sacrifce. Taking the salute of the parade (representing the Qld Police Commissioner) is Acting Chief Superintendant Brett Schafferius, alongside Acting District Superintendant, Rolf Straatemeier.

Divided reign By Justin Fris

LAST Thursday morning’s Tablelands Regional Council meeting saw arguably the most controversial use of Mayor Rosa Lee Long’s casting vote during her tenure. TRC councillors Peter Hodge and Geoff Stocker sided with Mayor Lee Long in updating an amendment to the TRC’s ‘Standing Orders’ – with Cr’s Shaaron Linwood, Rod Marti and Marjorie Pagani voting against it. Amongst several new changes, this decision now means that any councillor wishing to table a motion during ‘General Business’, can only do so 10 or more days out from the meeting. If the issue falls within the 10 day period before the meeting, it will be forced to queue two or three weeks until the next meeting.

The new ruling states: “A notice must be submitted in writing to the CEO, ten (10) calendar days prior to the next Ordinary Council Meeting. The CEO will make every attempt to list the item on the agenda for the next available Council Ordinary Meeting.” This infuriated Cr Rod Marti, was denied an opportunity to move a motion of support for those impacted by a serious supermarket fire in Yungaburra, the same morning. “So on the morning of the Yungaburra Foodworks fire, and after visiting the scene early with fire crews still fully engaged, I was refused the opportunity to report its devastating effects to Council's scheduled meeting,” he said. “With the doctoring of the ‘Standing Orders’, councillors now have to give 10 days notice of ‘General Business’ items. “The four votes of the Mayor, Cr Stocker and Cr Hodge have put

brakes on representing community issues as they happen. ‘General Business’ at the TRC is dead and buried.” Additionally to the above ruling, the TRC Mayor is now allowed to move any item into the agenda for consideration – even without a seconder. The ‘Mayoral Minute’ ruling reads: “The Mayor may move that a matter be introduced to the agenda for consideration at a meeting. This motion does not require to be seconded, but requires a majority vote. Once the meeting concluded, concerned ratepayers voiced their concern outside about how wording within sections of the legislation allowed for considerable ambiguity. CONTINUED PAGE 3

New Mareeba State High School principal Scott Whybird is keen to bring a collaborative and positive style of leadership to the school.

NEWLY-appointed Mareeba State High School Principal Scott Whybird has never been so excited about commencing an education-based position. A man who has been involved in education since 1989, Mr Whybird is a passionate, observant individual who has high expectations for himself and others. “I’ve had a really good opportunity to learn my trade over the last 27 years,” he said. “I was a teacher for my first 13 years in my career and then I started to to move into both Deputy Principal and Principal positions. “It’s been a great experience – I was a Maths/Science teacher – I taught Maths B, Chemistry and rugby league.” Beginning his career in Mossman, Mr Whybird has spent stints at Kuranda, Thursday Island, Cooktown, Moranbah and Cairns High. Along with laying solid foundations in education, he has coached (Level 2 accredited) and refereed (Level 3 accredited) rugby league at an elite level – coaching the Peninsula Schoolboys side

for 17 years, along with being Qld Secondary School’s rugby league treasurer. “I’m a big believer in extracurricular activities, as well as the academic side,” he said. “There’s a real place for getting our academic side right, but our social side – especially around sport – teaches those quality values, which I think are really important to people.” Mr Whybird spent last week in Mareeba speaking with local businesses and stakeholders and was heartened by their feedback. “The whole key aim is us all working together to help our students achieve the best they can,” he said. Collaboration is something that Mr Whybird is especially passionate about – and said he was keen to work with local schools in the area – both primary and secondary. “I don’t know whether I’ve ever been so excited to have a position as I have here,” he said. “I just feel really happy and honoured to be a Principal of Mareeba High.” Mr Whybird takes over from Jo Soothill who will be transferring from Mareeba to Brisbane in Term 4.

Atherton State High succeeds in literacy By Justin Fris

SEVERAL students from Atherton State High School (ASHS) have shown real promise in the academic field of literacy. Two of these students included Olivia Maeda and Charles English (pictured) who were both recently acknowledged for their effort during ‘Literacy Week’. ASHS’s ‘Literacy Group’ program is designed to assist and support students in Year 7, 8 and 9, who may have missed certain elements of literacy-based education during primary school. “One of the resources we use,” said ASHS literacy teacher Lyndal Ribes “is an online literacy program called Lexia Core5. It aims to fill in the gaps students have in literacy.” Mrs Ribes added that students work independently

and at their level so they achieve success in a short period of time. This success propels them to continue working towards more success and they slowly fill those gaps that have been impeding their reading. “Each time a student completes five levels in Lexia, they receive a magazine or small book of their choice,” she said. “It’s a way of encouraging students.” Olivia and Charles, along with Ian Haughton and Jayden Cairns, have worked for a significant number of hours on Lexia Core5 and their hard work was recognised with the small gifts. The literacy teachers are keen to continue the success. PICTURED: Atherton State High School student Charles English is one of many students who is achieving well in literacy at high school.

End of an era

The final remnants of a prosperous bygone era were sold on April 1, 2015. The Express’s Carl Portella caught up with Shaun Fassio from NQ Co-Op and Remzi Mulla, Chairman of the Queensland Tobacco Marketing Board, on the recent sale of the Tobacoo Leaf Marketing Co-op building at Mareeba. By Carl Portella

A sad day: Remzi Mulla in front of the Tobacco Marketing Co-Op building in Byrnes Street, Mareeba.

The Tobacco Leaf Marketing Co-op building in Byrnes Street, Mareeba, was sold to local company TGT for an undisclosed amount in April this year. Chairman of NQ Co-Op (TGT) Board Shaun Fassio said: “The company is excited to have purchased such an iconic building with a rich and vibrant past. Our decision to purchase the building was for the economic and sustainability of TGT into the future and part of our long term strategy.” As I caught up with Remzi Mulla, who is still the Chairman of the Queensland Tobacco Marketing Board (QTMB) at the Byrnes Street location, he calmly took out a ‘rollie’ and lit up in front of the building, as he began to reminisce about the industry that was a major part of his life right up to when it was shut down just a few years ago. “You know Carl,” he said. “If it wasn’t for the tobacco industry, there would be no Tinaroo Dam, no prime research facilities, electrical transmission infrastructure, engineering services – we wouldn’t even have the population that we have – we owe it all to the tobacco industry in Mareeba and Dimbulah.” “These facilities were not just for the tobacco indus-

try, but they were instrumental in the birth of other industries for which the area now depends on.” The first tobacco experimental farm was set up in 1928 and by 1933, there were 800 growers in the Mareeba and Dimbulah area. There were many turbulent years throughout the 1930’s, 40’s and 50’s, until Tinaroo Dam was built to cater for the ever expanding tobacco industry. Mareeba was known as the tobacco capital of Australia. The QTMB was placed under receivership a few weeks ago with BDO Liquidators of Cairns and is now in the process of paying out the 249 farmers who still had shares in the company. Mr Mulla said his understanding is that because the documents were pre-1985, there would be no capital gains tax – however each farmer’s circumstance may be different and he encourages shareholders to talk with their accountants. The liquidation process should take two to three months to complete. This brings an end to a fascinating and much loved part of our history. It will remain part of who we are today, as we strive to look to what we can build for the future.

TRC changes ‘Standing Orders’ with casting vote FROM PAGE 1 The motion was initially moved by Cr Stocker and seconded by Cr Hodge. Cr Marti pulled no punches in his prompt, succinct, assessment. “The opportunity for councillors to bring motions into ‘General Business’ is intrinsic of being a councillor – that is what we are here for,” he said. “If councillors cannot bring up a matter in ‘General Business’ to a council meeting, we are dramatically compromising the functioning of this Council. “This is really an abuse of power. “Where is the community benefit in doctoring the ‘Standing Orders’ ? Cr Linwood said she found it quite ‘strange’ that particular councillors were always keen to workshop contentious issues – however

on this issue, their silence was deafening. Along with this, she added that the use of the mayoral casting vote had been abused (used 29 times since April 28, 2012); and had ‘not one iota’ of faith in the TRC’s leadership. This approach raised the ire of Mayor Lee Long, who accidently referred to Cr Linwood as ‘Cr Pagani’ – while voicing her disapproval. Cr Hodge said he had rung several other councils within the state and inquired about how they went about their handling of ‘General Business’. He told the room that many councils adopted the conditions recommended in the report and describe the report recommendation as ‘good governance’. Cr Pagani soundly took Cr Hodge to task over his stance on the matter and questioned the legal-

ity on how it was being delivered. A Local Government Association of Queensland representative was briefed by The Express in regard to the amendment ruling; and, after being presented with the report, confirmed that there was ‘nothing out of order’ nor illegal in nature with the tabled conditions. Looks around the gallery appeared resigned – even before the vote – and they weren’t left with a pleasant surprise upon their departure. Malanda Chamber of Commerce vice president Christine Doan offered sentiments which appear to be growing by the day on the southern Tablelands. “We hate it when politicians vote themselves a raise,” she said. “We should also hate it if politicians vote themselves rules that make it so they always win.”

CASH CARRIER

Some oldies will remember when we went into Jack and Newell’s Mareeba Store and bought sugar, flour and many other things weighed out by the pound, served from a wooden hopper with a scoop, into a brown paper bag on the scales. It was then tied up with string which hung from the ceiling in a tin with a hole in the bottom for the string to hang down. Now for the payment - no till - no money draw. How did we get our change? Where did they put the money?

Work begins to repair trail network By Justin Fris

A dedicated team of local volunteers, the FNQuadriders Inc, are completing the first and second of six stages in repairing a valued resource to the Tablelands. The ‘Moomin Community Trail Network’ – which is located within the Herberton Range conservation park – provides horse riders and hikers a quality outlet to enjoy the great outdoors. Local volunteer Tim Forsyth said that a committed group of locals had worked in tandem with the Tablelands Regional Council and the Department of National Parks, Sport and Racing. “Our collaborative agreement with the department is to repair and maintain the trail known as the ‘Link Track’ – this came with a $5000 grant,” he said. “The TRC gave us $3500 to repair the section of trail that runs through the Moomin Weir on its way up to Waughton’s lookout, which is about a kilometre east of Carrington falls. “The businesses that have helped us stretch our grant money are Tablelands Hardware, Ron Blaney,Tonkin Steel and Tableland Batteries.” Mr Forsyth said he was heartened by both stage one and two nearing completion and encouraged locals in the area to enjoy its serenity. “This is a community organised effort under the facilitation of the Tablelands Forest User Group (TFUG) and the Tablelands Outdoor Recreation Association (TORA), who really want the community to go use these trails; it is a beautiful forest,” he said. “Stage one is a designated horse and walking trail that has been used primarily by trail bikes - It is also located within a wet tropic national park. “I have not come across any trail users ever complaining about the

trail bikes, but the trail has been to dangerous for the horses to use for some years; so trail bikes need to be careful.” Mr Forsyth added: “But the department will not even consider giving us the go ahead for stages three, four, five or six, until we (FNQuadriders Inc) can show that we are capable of not just reinstating the trail but maintaining it. “We really need the trail bikes to conscientiously ride in a manner that they do not damage the trail or damage the erosion control humps. “Please note that trail bikes, quad bikes, buggies and 4WD’s operating in this forest are in breach of National Parks Policy. “We really need the trail bikes to conscientiously ride in a manner that they do not damage the trail or damage the erosion control hump.” Tablelands Regional councillor (division two) Shaaron Linwood commended the work which has been completed by the volunteers. “It really is a great initiative,” she said. “In all of the meetings I’ve had with them, they have been both committed and passionate.” PICTURED ABOVE: Colin Thomas, Tim Forsyth and Rod Gillespie are three local volunteers dedicated to preserving local trails.

Slaughterhouse approved for Mt Garnet By Justin Fris

The cash carrier served the purpose. The cashier sat in his office upstairs in the middle of the store with fi xed wire systems leading to every department of the store. From the downstairs counters there were catapult arrangements that propelled the little carriers along the wires up to the office. The cashier dealt with the contents and sent the little carriers back down the wires by gravity for the capsule to be used again. Try explaining to a class of primary school children of today that there was no money at the shop counter! It does not compute. Our trusty old mechanic, Tony Riordan, set up the old Jack & Newell cash carrier for us and keeps it running.

TABLELANDS Regional councillors voted unanimously last Thursday morning to approve a development application for a slaughterhouse in Mt Garnet. In a report tabled by TRC senior planning officer Peter Pattison, the facility will process 100 head of stock per day. There are several regulations which need to be adhered to by the successful applicant (Sugarbag Qld Pty Ltd) particularly in terms of the preserving the environment around it. Mr Pattison said: “There will be no offensive impacts from dust, smoke, fumes, particulates odours or aerosols at sensitive receptors, as determined by Council’s regulatory officer. “When instructed by Council, the developer/operator must commission an odour, dust, or noise assessment to monitor and investigate any complaint of nuisance. He added: “The monitoring data, analysis of that data, and a report must be provided within 14 days of completion of the investigation to the satisfaction of Council’s delegated officer.”

Cr Shaaron Linwood – who has routinely lobbied hard for the town – said the facility would be a welcomed addition. “An application like this is very important for this area,” she said. “You’ve got an area which is vast and is very keen to be developed. “I’m excited about the potential this proposal promises to bring and it will be real boost to the area, both in terms of employment opportunities and the economic revitalisation of the Mt Garnet area - which has been feeling the pinch for some time with the downturn in mining. “The thing I always appreciate about rural communities is their persistence and the way they actively look for ways to add diversity and value added to remain sustainable and productive; and Sugarbag Station is a fine example of that. I wish them every success in this new venture.” Cr Geoff Stocker said: “I’m delighted to be able to second this. It’s a tremendous opportunity in this particular area.” The Express contacted two Mt Garnet-based graziers for their thoughts on the decision, however both declined to comment at this time.

In touch with your insurance needs We all work really hard to create a comfortable lifestyle for ourselves and our families. Our homes, social lives and creature comforts are all funded by our working efforts. What if this changed? It is a natural human instinct to shy away from thoughts of dreadful things happening to ourselves or any member of our family, however, the reality is, hundreds of families every single day are impacted by events which take away their capacity to pay the bills. This is where Mareeba local Shannon Telley can help. Shannon established InTouch Insurance to provide families with an easy, personalised way to access the types and levels of insurance to suit their individual circumstances and needs. One of the key strengths of InTouch Insurance is that it is not institutionally aligned, meaning clients are able to obtain the insurance policies they require to meet their personal circumstances – every family is different, so every insurance solution should be different as well. By working together, Shannon is able to put cover in place that will protect what is most important to you, your family and your lifestyle. The service she provides is very different to calling a number that you saw on TV to apply for insurance. Shannon takes into account your

personal situation and other important factors. This means that at claim time you don’t need to worry about whether your claim will be paid or not, providing real peace of mind. Shannon is also able to help those that already have insurance in place – as having insurance isn’t something that you just deal with once to set it up. You need to make sure that your insurance changes with you. Maybe your debt has increased, your relationship status has changed, you have more children or your income has increased. All of these factors can affect what insurance you need. This is why it is very important to review your insurances regularly. Reviewing your insurance is part of the service that Shannon offers, even if it was set up by another adviser or a bank. To find out more about the InTouch Insurance difference and how having the right insurance is the right move for you and your family, contact Shannon today. Yungaburra supermarket guttered by fire AUTHORITIES are in the process of determining the cause of a major fire which gutted the Yungaburra Foodworks supermarket last Thursday morning. Local fire crews received a call at 4.45am – and by the time they were suited up and able to enter the premises, the fire had done substantial damage. Police and paramedic officials also attended the scene, and successfully cordoned off the affected area. No one was injured or inside the building when the fire ignited. Prior to the Tablelands Regional Council

meeting at 9am, Division 4 councillor Rod Marti attended the scene with Mayor Rosa Lee Long. After surveying the damage and consulting with the authorities, Cr Marti said: “This fire is a devastating for the owners of Foodworks, their staff and the wider Yungaburra community. “The shop owners are long standing residents of Yungaburra and very popular shopkeepers. They are always supportive of community events and are one of Yungaburra's biggest employers.” Cr Marti added that this incident would prove a significant challenge for many locals

Unfavourable conditions punctuate Chewko bushfire By Justin Fris

UNFAVOURABLE conditions did little favours for local firefighters last week in Mareeba, who fought vigorously against a large bushfire. Commencing at 11.45am last Wednesday, the Chewko Road based fire (located 13km from Mareeba) briefly looked as though it could threaten nearby homes, along with impacting traffic along Chewko Road, Dimbulah Road and Narcotic Creek Road. At 3pm, authorities advised locals that they were required to prepare their bushfire safety plan and ensure they were adequately ready for any outcome. An hour later, the ‘Watch and Act’ warning was downgraded, with local fire crews commencing various back burning operations in a bid to quell the intensity of the blaze. Despite certain elements having been successfully contained, leading Mareeba firefighter Darryl Chaplain

said conditions were still very much unpredictable in the days after the fire began. “It’s all controlled and is currently being contained,” he said. “There has been some loss of minor structures near the site, along with major damage to the Queensland Rail bridge along the rail line to Forsyth. “The bridge is currently being repaired as we speak, so that the train service can recommence on Saturday.” He added: “Conditions were very nasty, and even today, there have been very heavy gusts of wind.” With the weather set to warm up even further in coming months, last week’s event serves as a reminder for everyone to be extremely cautious and prepared this bushfire season. COUNTRY music lovers across the Far North only have to wait a few more days before one of the hallmark events on the calendar. Regarded as one of the most exciting festivals in our region, the Far North Queensland Country Music festival will be held at Kerribee Park between Friday evening (October 9) and Sunday (October 11) afternoon. The festival is something that encompasses various ages, backgrounds and talents – and Walkamin Country Music Club president Darryl Chaplain can’t wait for it. “The big thing is that the festival is jam packed full of music and entertainment,” he said. “There really is something for everyone.” Mr Chaplain – who is in his fifth consecutive year as club president – said the festival was heading into its 18th year. Friday night will see the festival commence with an ‘open mic’ event, where members of the audience can try their hand at singing their favourite number. Without question, the jewel of the festival’s crown is Saturday evening’s ‘Saturday Supa Show’, which will run between 6pm and midnight. The lineup will include: Brothers 3, Wendy Coppo, local talent Becci Nethery, Narelle Glover, Phoebe Jay, Careless, the Kurdaz Country Band, 3 Blind Mice and Tyson Lucas. Ms Coppo, who is originally from Cairns, will be making her first appearance at the festival in nearly five years – and she can hardly wait. “It’s great to be back up in the part of Australia (which) I love the most,” she said. “I am so pleased to be asked back to sing for you all and please don’t forget to come up and say ‘G’day’.”

Their style is described as ‘sophisticated’ and they play a multitude of different instruments during each song. Planning for such a festival doesn’t just occur overnight. Mr Chaplain outlined the rigorous but dedicated approach to put on such a wonderful occasion. “We try and secure a reasonable artist early in the year and begin putting it together,” he said. “It’s important we also get the word out there about all the exciting talent on display. “We do our best to fundraise prior to the event, which helps with the payment of the artists who attend.” Several talented local artists (Becci Nethery – Chillagoe, Kate Wilcox – Mareeba) are two examples of youngsters who have shone at the CMAA Country Music College in Tamworth. It is festivals such as this, which have given local artists an opportunity to shine on the national stage. “If you look at Becci Nethery right now, her song is currently sitting at number nine on the national country music chart,” Mr Chaplain said. Sunday will see potential finalists recognised across three major catagories (Open, Junior and Juvenile) – with a final performance aiding their chances of winning their respective category. Mr Chaplain added that he wanted to thank the large number of volunteers and sponsors who have worked so hard to make the event a real showstopper. “All of the facilities here (at Kerribee Park) are there,” he said. “There are camping facilities, food and drinks, so people can relax and enjoy themselves over the weekend.”

October in Yuruga’s native gardens... Well, the dry season is well and truly upon us. No point trying to keep lawns looking lush and green – it’s pretty well impossible at this time of year, and just a waste of water. Anyway, lawns are amazingly resilient and will bounce back into life with the first rains. Leaf drop at the moment is massive. Plants are coping with the dry by shedding leaves, and many once-dense screens now have a see-through look. Don’t waste the leaves – they’re a valuable resource! Rake them back onto the garden, and pile them up around your plants as mulch. Or if you’ve got a leaf blower, put it to work – it’s such an easy way to keep your garden tidy and top up your mulch at the same time. Despite the dry, there’s plenty happening in our Yuruga native gardens. The raucous Channel-billed Cuckoos are back in force, telling us at the top of their voice that summer is here again, as they feast on the fruit of the huge Hairy Fig (Ficus drupacea) which overhangs the nursery. And the beautiful Red-winged Parrots are out and about, gobbling up the acacia and grevillea seeds which are in abundance following the heavy flowering a few weeks ago. Bring your binoculars next time you visit the nursery. The native cassia, Cassia queenslandica, will soon burst into bloom with hundreds of beautiful yellow racemes of flowers hanging from the branches. The Bat’s Wing Coral Trees (Erythrina vespertilio) have dropped all their leaves and replaced them with bright red flowers, much to the delight of the honeyeaters. The fantastic Tree Waratah (Alloxylon flammeum) is ablaze with flowers, and the Bumpy Satinash (Syzygium cormiflorum) is loaded with glorious fluffy white flowers all down its trunk. Our numerous Callistemons put on an amazing display of flowers a couple of weeks ago, and there’s still a few stragglers blooming here and there. One of our favourite shade trees, the Pink Poplar (Euroschinus falcata) has dropped its old leaves and put out the most beautiful fresh new shiny foliage that absolutely glistens in the sunlight. The leaves of the various Terminalias turn bright red at this time of year (autumn leaves in spring) adding some stunning colour effects to the garden. And perfume from the lovely white flowers of the False Gardenia (Randia sessilis) and the Wax Flower vine (Hoya australis) is wafting through the air. There’s always lots happening in our native gardens, even in the height of the dry.

See you at Yuruga, and bring your binoculars for a spot of bird-watching!

Local growers were thoroughly engaged by the latest rural development workshop, which was facilitated by the Northern Gulf Resource Management Group.

SEVERAL local businesses from the Mareeba-Dimbulah region recently completed the fifth of a series of rural development workshops. The most recent event focussed on irrigation, with training participants spending time under the tutorage of Trevor Parker (Northern Gulf Resource Management Group) and Pat Daley, who provided a comprehensive presentation of irrigation-based concepts. Mr Daley – who has over 39 years of experience within the irrigation industry – focussed his information around the importance of sustainability. With a community minded focus, all programs facilitated by the NGRMG are about empowering local farmers and ensuring they are equipped with the best knowledge possible. Mr Parker said: “Regional skills development is being delivered to ensure we have the best skilled people avail-

able for the region. Our funding partners are committed to local professional development.” Mareeba District Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association workplace development officer Leanne Kruss – who has made significant inroads into improving local agricultural fortunes – praised local farmers for their willingness to think with an innovative mindset. “Our primary producers are amongst some of the most progressive and innovative in the world,” she said. “Tropical agriculture is very different to the familiar traditions of temperate regions. Our growers contributed a gross value of production (GVP) of over $404 million to the Tablelands economy for the 2010/11 financial year. “Tree crop industries, valued at $220 million, are the largest component of the Tablelands agriculture sector.” If you would like to learn more about these exciting workshops, please contact Ms Kruss on 0431 743 633.

Painting for a good cause A ‘Dip n Splash’ fun painting day for a good cause was held last Sunday in Mareeba. Hosted by local artist Kerri Redding the day raised $1748.10 for the Mareeba Friends of the Hospital Foundation to go towards the purchase of an Otoscope for the Mareeba Hospital. A further $300 was also raised to buy paints and art tools for two local artists living with a disability. More than 25 people, from kids to adults, joined in the fun and each created unique splatter paintings for their homes and businesses. There was plenty of experienced support available on the day thanks to Kerri, Joy Culley and Jenny Mulchay and a host of other locals and businesses who helped out to make the day a great success.

Brothers 3 – X Factor 2014 grand finalists will feature as the headline act at this weekend’s FNQ Country Music Festival, at Kerribee Park, Mareeba. Brothers 3 – Shardyn, Tayzin and Makirum (just 18, 17 and 16 years old respectively) – burst on to the music scene four years ago and since then they have been performing and collecting awards proving that their youth is clearly no barrier to success. Their catchy, fresh, feel-good songs celebrate nature and life in the bush and country. The song Herbert Street is written about a lazy Sunday morning in Gulgong, NSW. Brothers 3 songs are on regular rotation on radio stations across Australia and Internationally. Brothers 3 sing sophisticated harmonies and play (and swap) banjo, guitars, mandolin, keyboards, bass, trumpet, clarinet, harmonica and more. The boys perform their original award winning material as well as folk, country and bluegrass covers and are winners of the People’s Choice Awards in 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014. Joining Brothers 3, plus a host of other talented artists this weekend is local singer Becci Nethery and returning after five years is Wendy Coppo, a former Cairns based performer who now lives on the Sunshine Coast. We’re gearing up for the 7th annual Tablelands Relay For Life! Cancer Council Queensland spokesperson Katie Clift extends a special invite to the community to attend this inspirational event.

An action-packed 18 hours at Relay

Atherton Tablelands locals - it’s time to get your friends and family together, unite in the fight and register for Relay! We’ve already had 16 teams register and hope many more will join us as we walk in hope of a cancer free future and in support of locals affected by the disease. This year, Cancer Council Queensland’s Tablelands Relay For Life will be held on November 7-9 at Atherton Showgrounds. Mark it in your diaries and get ready for a weekend you won’t forget. Whether you’re a long-term Relayer or this is your first event, Relay For Life is a life-changing 18 hours for all involved. As the sun rises on Saturday morning, participants trickle through the gates with their tents, camping chairs and decorations to start the annual set up. Teams get creative and splash plenty of colour around as they settle in for the day ahead. Once the tents are erected, costumes are on and walking shoes laced up, participants gear up for the official opening ceremony at 3pm. During the opening ceremony survivors and carers are invited to lead the first lap in celebration of their journey. For the second lap, everyone walks the track in support of the survivors. Throughout the afternoon teams continue to make their way around the oval

in a relay style walk, and enjoy the entertainment. As dusk settles in, teams prepare for the candlelight ceremony. This is a time for participants to light candles and line the track with bags inscribed with messages of love, remembrance and hope. The candlelight ceremony inspires Relayers to continue walking throughout the night and keep fighting. With a new determination in their step, and brushing off the urge to sleep, teams continue to walk throughout the night until the early hours of the morning. As the sun rises on a new day participants are treated to a warm breakfast to nourish their bodies in the final few hours. At 8.45am participants take part in the closing lap and make a pledge to continue to make a difference in the fight against cancer - beyond the weekend. As the clock ticks over to 9am, teams pack down and head home with a smile on their faces, knowing that their contribution has truly made a vital difference and helped Cancer Council Queensland take another step towards a cancer free future. See you at Relay!. To register a team at Tablelands Relay For Life visit: www.relayforlife.org.au or phone Cancer Council’s Fundraising Hotline 1300 65 65 85.

What’s on at the Rising Sun Cinema There are three terrific new films at Mareeba's Rising Sun Cinema this week – starting on Thursday. Meryl Streep and Kevin Kline star in the excellent and often humourous drama RICKI AND THE FLASH, while the action drama EVEREST has an all star line up. This film is based on a true story, one that ultimately claimed the life of New Zealand mountaineer Rob Hall and seven others. STAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON is a very different musical trip and again is based on the true exploits of a select band of rap musicians who set the musical world alight. The excellent Aussie flic ODDBALL continues for a second great week.

Riders thoroughly enjoyed their time during the Cardiac Challenge, which raised much needed funds for cardiac health resources in the Far North.

Cardiac Challenge filled with highlights By Justin Fris

THE 2015 Mount Franklin Cardiac Challenge achieved two key things this year – not only did it make tremendous inroads into assisting cardiac health services, but people were able to express themselves through exercise. Facilitated by the Far North Queensland Hospital Foundation, the event saw hundreds of bike riders travel from Cairns to Cooktown, in a bid to raise much needed funds for cardiac health. FNQHF CEO Tony Franz said that since the event began back in 2006, over $2.2 million had been raised – which has resulted in several lives being saved each year. “The annual Cardiac Challenge makes a huge difference to cardiac services within the Far

North,” he said. “Since we started nine years ago, we have contributed more than $2.2 million towards cardiac services, which save lives on a daily basis. “Over the years, contributions to Cardiac Challenge have funded the Rapid Access Chest Pain Clinic, Echocardiography (ultrasound) system for young heart patients, portable echocardiography system for young heart patients and two intra-aortic balloon pumps. “(This year) we believe we will reach $240,000, as we still have donations coming in.” This year’s race saw a partial closure of the Kuranda Range for the first time. Despite some predicting that this may rise the ire of some motorists, good promotion appeared to ensure that all parties were left satisfied.

“It was excellent,” Mr Franz said. “We had 160 cyclists ride up Kuranda Range in safety. There was an ambulance that made its way down just before we sent the cyclists up, which went off without a hitch. And we managed to get all those cyclists off the Range before we thought we would. “Every year we are seeking to improve and make the event better for all participants so we’re about to undertake an assessment and look at what we can improve on for future events.” Mr Franz concluded that several participants had informed him that this year’s event was the best held to date – and he was also incredibly grateful for the outpouring of support. “Our numbers were slightly down but most riders are saying this was our best event yet and

Successful carnival held in Malanda THE Malanda Horse and Pony Club held their three day ‘Annual Gymkhana’ carnival last weekend, with solid participation throughout all age groups. MHPC treasurer Pam Evans said both crowd and riders had been treated to a solid program of quality equine events. “Yesterday (Saturday) we had our jumping-based events and today (Sunday) we have a nine program gymkhana,” she said. “Tomorrow we will finish with our interschool horse sports. We’ve had around 80 to 90 people participate, who range from the age of four, right up to the more elderly.” Such an event cannot be planned overnight and the MHPC is extremely grateful and proud of the many parents and volunteers who have taken time out of their lives to assist with the running of these events. Ms Evans added that the gymkhana component of the program was a composition of a variety of horse-based skills – and required both rider and horse to work collaboratively.

we are confident that next year, being number 10, will be huge,” he said. “We would particularly like to thank Mount Franklin, Mobil Trinity Petroleum, Queensland Police Service, SES, Piccones IGA, Cornetts IGA, Avis, Tjapukai, the media, Cook Shire Council, Mareeba Shire Council, Cairns Regional Council, Fuji Xerox, First Response, Intelligent Surveillance, Brian White, Pump N Pedals, Rotary, and most importantly the riders, pack leaders, escort drivers and supporters. “We would also like to thank the general public for their patience with the cyclists when they were on the Kuranda Range and then riding in packs to Cooktown.” If you would like to learn more, please visit www.cardiacchallenge.com.au

Mareeba junior announced as Australian U/17 captain for World Cup TALANTED Mareeba junior Nicholas Panetta has been announced as Joeys captain (Australia’s U/17’s) for the upcoming World Cup in Chile, beginning on October 18. Australia faces Germany, Mexico and Argentina in their group.

Mareeba to host basketball association carnival MAREEBA is only weeks away from hosting one of the most exciting basketball tournaments in the Far North. ‘Top of the North’ is a small basketball association tournament in which Atherton, Cairns, Mulgrave, Port Douglas and Mareeba will take part. Games will be held on Friday evening, Saturday and Sunday, which will give sportsfans a fantastic opportunity to witness a wall-to-wall weekend of quality basketball. Mareeba Basketball Association president Silvano Ruggeri said the weekend would be very beneficial, as it

would provide a quality opportunity for the club to showcase the sport. “It’s a really good opportunity for the players to find out how they stack up against other local associations,” he said. Port Douglas are one of the early tips for the tournament, with Mulgrave and Mareeba also fancying their chances. The ‘Top of the North’ tournament will be held at the Mareeba PCYC Sports Hall on Walsh Street, Mareeba, between October 30 and November 1.

It was a rewarding victory for Marcello Savaglio’s men, who erased some disappointment from their 3-1 grand final loss against Leichhardt. Victory looked anything but assured for the hosts, who conceded a goal with less than 60 seconds on the clock. The Bulls were caught napping during the first exchange of play, with the visitors strolling through the defence. This tidy piece of play was capitalised by Matthew Strogusz, who was able to casually slide his shot past a defenceless Ronnie Leporati. MUFC players appeared stung by the early goal, and lacked their usual creativity in the middle of the park. Two players who shone throughout this dour

period were Leonardo Cisterni and Masato Takada. Cisterni buzzed around the pitch during the first half and looked like MUFC’s biggest goal threat. Takada, similarly, has come of age this season. Despite conceding height to several opponents, he more than truly made up for it in heart, skill and courage. Savaglio’s unwavering belief in his men would be solidified on 73 minutes, when Josh Ruiz finally grabbed a deserved equaliser. MUFC would only remain on level terms for seven minutes, before Zac Park appeared to have wrapped up the win, after Leporati again was left with little support. Home supporters would only despair for 60 seconds, with Cisterni again ensuring that the teams could not be separated. Perhaps with a grand final the week before and a long bus trip on the day of the game caught up with Brothers, who conceded three

goals during 2x 15 periods of extra time. Savaglio said: “It wasn’t the greatest start we could possibly have had. I’m not sure whether it was nerves that got the better of the defence. “But as the game progressed, we knew we had the talent out there to overcome it. “Leo played his best game tonight – without a doubt.” The Brothers coaching staff said they were very proud of their younger players – and that

they had a chance to play in Mareeba on the big stage. In other Crad Evans games on the day, it was also a memorable double for Edge Hill United in both ladies matches, with both teams overturning 2-0 deficits enroute to historic Crad Evans Shield success. MA Olympic defeated Edge Hill in the second division final, also winning in extra time, 2-1.

MUNDINGBURRA-Aitkenvale Olympic goalkeeper Ryan Murphy provided one of the greatest goalkeeping displays seen in Mareeba last Saturday evening at Borzi Park. Desperate to atone for their 2-1 defeat in the NQ Premier League final only a week before, Murphy’s deeds ensured the visitors defeated the Mareeba United Football Club 1-0 – and ensured they would travel home with the Premier Men’s Crad Evans shield. For the hosts, the evening will serve a painful reminder over the off-season as to what can occur when chances and momentum are not capitalised upon. Mareeba Bulls went into the game the reining Crad Evans champions and were on a quest to re-write North Queensland football history with a never before done ‘double-treble’. From the off, it appeared that Olympic’s pace would prove troublesome along the flanks. It was somewhat surprising however, that they appeared reluctant to pass the ball in the middle of the park. The first genuine half chance of the match fell to David Ruiz in the 4th minute, with his darting header an early sighter for Murphy in the visitors’ goal. After an initial spell of six minutes where they tested the back four, the visitors then took a back seat for the majority of the half, as the Bulls began to establish control of the contest. Winning midfield battles along

the way, the Bulls successfully implemented their successful ‘pass and move’ fluid style of football – with Olympic unable to win the ball back off them. This forced the visitors to drop five or six defenders back at any given time, which made genuine attacking forays very difficult to execute. Lachlan Rowan was able to routinely find himself in acres of space along the clubhouse flank, however the Bulls defence routinely forced him wide, which negated his ability to whip in a tantalising cross. Both sides wrestled for supremacy on the stroke of half time, with no one the wiser at how the result would play out. Despite the optimistic hum provided by the heavily populated grandstands, Murphy’s bellowing of instructions was never far from earshot. Coupled with a misty rain which eventually turned into a healthy shower in the 56th minute, these two variables would ultimately play their part in the final result. Olympic were still pushing solid numbers back behind the ball, with MUFC attackers still appearing no closer to breaking the deadlock. On the same day Brian Adams rocked out his signature ‘Summer of 69’ song in Melbourne, the 69th, minute fittingly saw the game’s only goal. After winning a corner, enterprising attacker Scott Dymock rose unmarked in a clogged penalty area and steered his powerful header past Julian Ma-

drid. With the rain falling heavier, time was fast running out for the home side. Although they had overcome deficits in recent weeks, the desire to get a result in this particular final is unrivalled. The Borzi Park faithful roared as one on 73 minutes, when an Olympic defender was adjudged to have handballed the ball in his own penalty area. Up stepped Anthony Mete, who had successfully converted his spot kick during the grand final win over Stratford a fortnight ago. Mete struck his shot into the bottom left hand corner, but it was acutely stopped by Murphy, who parried the ball to safety. Murphy would also smartly save the follow up effort and only appeared to grow in stature from the experience. Alex Srhoj rang the changes in the final 10 minutes, with Larry Maggio and Leonardo Cisterni entering the match. Srhoj revealed post-match that Cisterni was carrying an injury from the reserve game, but wanted to push through the pain barrier and contribute for his teammates. Maggio would have an almost instant impact, with his noble drive only falling a few inches from the roof of the net. The assistant referee indicated that there would be five minutes of injury time, although Olympic adopted the time old tactic of running the ball into the corner flag, which significantly ate into this period.

Upon the final whistle, the weary MA Olympic faithful – who had travelled up from Townsville on the day of the match – sang joyfully in the rain, as the significance of their achievement began to sink in. Post-match, MA Olympic coach Michael Brooks said he was glad that his men were able to put the previous week’s grand final loss behind them. “We worked tirelessly on our shape and our structure,” he said. “And the bonus of having quick guys out wide is an added bonus to it all. “We knew they (Mareeba) would come out hard and fast – and we knew it would be a case of weathering the storm. The boys handled that beautifully I thought. “They weathered it well without leaking too many clear cut chances and turned around and fought for the entire 90 minutes. “They took us the whole way and after coming off a grand final loss last week – to turn around and do that, was just fantastic.” MUFC coach Alex Srhoj said the

evening was frustrating at times for his men, who were unable to land the hammer blow. “We were probably a bit frustrated at times,” he said. “And maybe we lapsed into a bit of a relaxation mode at times. “In the second half, we did what we could do – we were one touch away from winning it.” Srhoj praised the efforts of Murphy in the Olympic goal. “He was man of the match for sure,” he said. “It’s probably the best goalkeeping performance I’ve seen all year. “He saved a penalty, saved three or four one on ones – he deflected one onto the post – he was the difference tonight. If he wasn’t in the goal, we would have won 3 or 4-1 tonight.” The loss was untimely for the bulls given it was their first of the season, however one loss doesn’t discredit one of the greatest sides of this decade. They are true champions and many will never forget the amazing achievements witnessed during season 2015.
