Martin Tenni – a life to remember MAREEBA lost one of its most respected community members last week as Martin Tenni OAM sadly passed away.

Not only will he be remembered for his extensive involvement in the Mareeba community, he will also be held in high regard long after his passing for his exceptional political career that continues to leave its mark today.

Mr Tenni began his political

career in 1970 with the Mareeba Shire Council, becoming the council’s Chairperson in 1976.

Mr Tenni also had a stint as the National Party candidate for Barron River from 19741976, before making the move into multiple ministerial roles from 1983 until his retirement in 1989.

His 19-year political career was one to be admired, as he spearheaded a number of key

projects in Far North Queensland.

“I knew Martin very well, having served with him in the Parliament from 1986,” Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Tom Gilmore said.

“I’ll say this for Martin, he was vigorous and was always on the job.

“He always had strong opinions, as evidenced by the fact that he took everybody on to

build the road up to Cape Tribulation – that was his doing and he got it done irrespective of complaint from other people.

“And as a result, we have a marvellous outcome.

“He also did the Rex Range, and despite the objections he went ahead and finished that project – which is an illustration of the strength of character of Martin Tenni.”

In addition to his reputation

in the region’s political arena, Mr Tenni’s was also very wellrespected businessman, having owned and operated Tenni’s Hardware.

Martin Tenni’s advocacy for the region is one that ought to be remembered for a long time, and there are many communities in Far North Queensland who can thank him for changing theirs for the better.

Kuranda subdivision receives approval

A CONTROVERSIAL residential subdivision application for Barnwell Road, Kuranda was given the green light at last Wednesday’s Mareeba Shire Council meeting.

This application is for development under the Superseded Mareeba Shire Planning Scheme 2004, and was originally lodged on January 18, 2018.

The original application sought a development permit for Reconfiguring a Lot - Subdivision (12 into 191 lots in 8 stages). Since original lodgement, several amendments applications have been made with the last Change Application being made on August 29, 2019. The August Change Application reduced the scale of the proposed development to Reconfiguring a Lot - Subdivision (5 into 49 lots in 2 stages). The reduction to 49 lots had the effect of removing the State Transport Infrastructure referral trigger which applies to developments of 50 or more lots.

The application has been a point of intense discussion amongst Kuranda residents for some time now as a large number of them believe the subdivision will cause lasting and irreparable damage on the sur-

rounding flora and fauna and wildlife in the area, namely the Kuranda Tree Frog.

Despite the concerns held by those residents in opposition of the development, MSC Mayor Tom Gilmore said there are stringent regulations that are required to be adhered to throughout and beyond the subdivision’s construction.

“We’ve put some pretty strong restrictions on this particular job including reticulated water to combat the issues of people running out of water and its quality,” MSC Mayor Tom Gilmore said.

“This application has been put through within reason and within the rules that we can apply.”

As it relates to the concerns regarding the Kuranda Tree Frog, Cr Gilmore said there are things in place to ensure the development doesn’t pose a threat to the frogs’ environment.

“The development must not in any way affect the habitat of the Kuranda Tree Frog,” he said.

Despite Cr Gilmore’s assurances, a number of Kuranda residents who were present at last Wednesday’s council meeting voiced their opposition to the development’s approval.

Kuranda residents Cathy Retter and Steven Nowakowski voiced their opposition to Mareeba Shire Council’s decision to approve just shy of 50 residential lots in Kuranda.

“We’re incredibly disappointed with today’s decision,” Kuranda resident Cathy Retter said.

“I have no idea why the proponent has not provided the ecological report which num-

bers some 469 pages within the KUR-World EIS, of which they said in the application that they were going to provide the extent of the frog habitat.”

provided to the council, and yet the councillors have gone ahead and approved it.

“Because the proponent has not provided that information, there’s definitely some concern that had they seen it, they would

have voted against it.”

Ms Retter said their next step will be to go to the EPBC (Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999) to request that changes be made to the plan.

Annual Report highlights MSC’s success LAST week’s monthly Mareeba Shire Council meeting saw council adopt its Annual Report for the 2018/19 financial year.

Mayor Tom Gilmore said the report demonstrates the maturity of the organisation and the development of community assets, whilst acknowledging budgetary constraints drawn from Council’s knowledge of the capacity of the community to pay for the level of service provided.

“Mareeba Shire Council has come a long way in the five years since its inception on 1 January 2014 and our vision of ‘a growing, confident and sus-

tainable Shire’ represents the Council’s core values, principles and guides the priorities and deliverables of this highly successful organisation,” he said.

“During these past five years much has been done to stabilise the Shire’s finances to identify and reduce risk to the organisation and to establish a culture of careful future planning as the basis of sound decision-making.

“These plans ensure that the organisation provides true value for ratepayers’ money, based upon scrupulous attention to detail and careful scheduled maintenance of Shire assets.”

When tabling the Annual Report, Councillor Gilmore said this was his last annual report, and he is not seeking re-election at the upcoming Local Government election in March 2020.

“The Annual Report highlights where targets have been met as the organisation continues to deliver services for the growing community,” he said.

“Without the support from the Australian and the Queensland Governments, the Shire and ratepayers would struggle to fund critical infrastructure including the upgrade of bridges, roads and community facilities.

MSC tabled their 2018/19 Annual Report at last Wednesday’s Council meeting. After tabling the report, Cr Gilmore announced that this year’s Annual Report would be his last.

“The Australian and Queensland governments have afforded this community grants and subsidies over the past five years in excess of $104 million to assist in the replacement of aged assets, such as sewerage and water

infrastructure and the redevelopment of the Mareeba Airport.”

Council also released a Community Outcomes Report attached to the Annual Report; a retrospective since the new Mareeba Shire Council was estab-

lished in 2014. The document reviews some of the highlights which enabled Council to deliver local government services and manage assets to meet the most important community needs.

Mareeba’s first set of lights greenlit THE Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) will commence a project to upgrade the intersection of Byrnes Street and Rankin Street.

The project is scheduled to begin in early 2020, and will include the removal of the existing roundabout and installation of traffic signals to improve safety for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists.

The new signalised intersection and pedestrian crossing will also improve traffic flow and access to and from the Mareeba Central Business District.

The project is part of TMR’s Targeted Road Safety Program – Vulnerable Users program, which aims to improve safety for all road users, and is set to cost $3.47 million which will be funded courtesy of the State Government.

include a proposed U-turn bay, minor lane widening, the extension of new concrete medians and the installation of 40 km/h speed limits on approaches to the intersection.

Given the upgrade has been designed within the current road footprint to minimise land requirements, it means that some parking will be removed as part of the works.

Residents can expect to see construction completed by mid2020, weather permitting.

“I’ve often thought about what my biggest highlight of my political career was,” he said.

“It’s been a multi-faceted career with plenty of ups and downs, however I would say the development of the sugar mill, the Mareeba Waste Water Treatment Plant and Mareeba Airport Upgrade project are ones that stick out in my mind.”

In contrary, when asked if there were some projects that he would like to see come to fruition, he noted Nullinga Dam and Kuranda Range Road as two that were of great frustration to be an advocate on behalf of.

“I’m fortunate enough to be a part of a wonderful organisation of councils (FNQROC), where we have a solid organisation that has the resources to research and develop the region,” he said.

“With that group, I’ve been to Brisbane and Canberra and argued the case for many things, namely the Nullinga Dam and Kuranda Range Road.

“Of course, during that period, we have had our ups and downs and at times there’s deep unhappiness involved with that, especially when you see the failure of common sense, the failure of respect for remote areas and the failure of understanding of people in Brisbane and Canberra.

“Yes, we are a long way away but that doesn’t mean we’re not

without need or a future.”

“Where we have lost our vision as a nation I don’t know – it’s a great shame.

“All you can hope for is that you’re chipping away, and someone in the future will be able to get those important and necessary projects over the line.”

Cr Gilmore offered some advice for whoever assumes the roles of Councillors and Mayor at the next election.

“Stay true to the foundations and principles we’ve already established,” he said.

“Keep a tight rein on the budget, don’t borrow money for anything as it has to be affordable and appropriate, and make sure you grit your teeth from time to time.

“When you’re asked to make a difficult decision, don’t be afraid to make it.”

Cr Gilmore said he is proud of the position the Shire is in and thinks now is the time for someone else to take his place as Mayor.

“Thank you for the opportunity and privilege to serve this wonderful community,” he said.

“Lastly, I pay tribute to my wife Sally and my daughters Elisa and Catherine who have been part of the journey from the beginning.

“Without their unwavering support none of this would or could have happened.”

THE Mareeba Shire will say goodbye to one of its most respected politicians as MSC Mayor Tom Gilmore announced he will retire from public life at the next Local Government election.

Cr Gilmore made the announcement at last Wednesday’s Council meeting after tabling the 2018/19 Mareeba Shire Council Annual Report, where he noted that it would be his last.

Cr Gilmore has had a political career to be admired, having served 37 years in a variety of roles.

Cr Gilmore was elected to the Mareeba Shire Council in March of 1982 and served as a Councillor until May of 1987 after being elected to the Queensland Parliament as Member for Tablelands in 1986. He then returned to Local Government as a Councillor for Mareeba Shire in 2000.

“What a privilege it has been to have had the opportunity to serve my community in various ways since first elected to the Council in 1982,” Cr Gilmore said.

“Since that time, I have had the wonderful experience of filling the roles of Councillor and Mayor for almost twenty years, and I have enjoyed every minute of it.”

Cr Gilmore leaves a legacy of sound financial reserves and critical infrastructure projects which have created a solid foundation for the future of a growing community.

“Mareeba Shire right now is a sound financial position and this is a testament to the Councillors and staff who have had to make some tough decisions early on following de-amalgamation, to ensure sustainability and continued service delivery for the community,” he said.

TRC release Annual Report THE Tablelands Regional Council adopted their 2018/19 Annual Report at last Thursday’s council meeting.

It marks the final Annual Report for this particular council, a council that has seen many ups and down from a financial perspective since assuming their roles in 2016.

Arguably their most notable achievement includes their deliverance of 91 per cent of capital works projects last year.

In contrary, the rates debacle in the 2017/18 financial year is a mistake they’d rather forget, with some residents experiencing hikes in excess of 15 per cent.

Regarding the Annual Report, TRC Chief Executive Officer Justin Commons said council are continuing to review their long-term financial and asset management planning to improve the quality and availability of information to inform future councils’ decisions.

“On day one, the incoming council will be provided with appropriate and sufficient information to help make decisions regarding budgets and the like,” he said.

“The incoming council as has this council, will look to get the right balance in terms of what program of services and projects we deliver and how to fund that including the level of rate revenue that is collected.”

with ensuring long-term profitability, multiple deficits and certain allocations of funding have given Division 6 Councillor Owen Byrnes some cause for concern. Cr Byrnes outlined some of the figures that highlight the problems the current council have faced and continue to face in achieving a surplus.

“On the figures that I’ve worked out, the rate rises since 2015/16 including utilities has gone up about $5.869 million per annum,” he said.

“The increase in staff costs have gone up about $4.1 million per annum, and the increase in total operating costs has gone up nearly $9.5 million.

“In addition, over the 4-year period, we have roughly $25.934 million worth of capital works that we didn’t deliver – coinciding with our total cash reserves which have gone up by $11.125 million.

“The total increase in rates has not covered the increase in operational costs of the council and can be predominately at-

tributed to the increase in staff costs.”

As per the percentage of operational staff costs having increased from 36.92 per cent to 42.5 per cent forecasted in the last budget, Cr Byrnes asked TRC Mayor Joe Paronella and CEO Justin Commons if there is some advice and guidance council could be offering to

future councils to help them hit the ground running to ensure they can effectively monitor their finances moving forward.

With Local Government Elections scheduled for March 2020, those individuals running for council and Mayor who best outline a detailed plan to balance council’s finances will prove tough to beat.

PCYC Braking the Cycle changing lives of mentors and participants PCYC Braking the Cycle, the volunteer learner driver mentor program supporting young people to obtain their licence, is changing the lives of both mentors and participants at PCYC Mareeba.

Braking the Cycle is PCYC Queensland’s state-wide program that pairs learner drivers with volunteer mentors, who support them to undertake 100 hours of supervised on-road driving experience in order to achieve their driver’s licence.

PCYC Mareeba branch manager Sergeant Mary-Anne West is proud of the program, which has been running since August 2018 with support from Rotary.

“PCYC Braking the Cycle not only empowers disadvantaged young people to obtain their licence, it also increases a young person’s employment and education opportunities,” said Sergeant West.

“Our mentors offer more than just practical instruction, they help young people improve their self-esteem and encourage positive community connection,” she said.

One such volunteer Michael is proud to be a Braking the Cycle mentor, and enjoys getting to know the younger drivers.

“Being a mentor allows me to pass on my knowledge, experience and wisdom that comes from many years of driving, and it is really rewarding to educate

young drivers about the consequences of bad decisions, and help them make good choices on the road,” said Michael.

“You can volunteer as much or as little time as you can spare, and you can offer support at times that fit flexibly around your life,” he said.

Former participant Zach who has recently gained his licence through the program, strongly encourages community members to volunteer any spare time they can.

“The mentors were so supportive. Without the mentors, I know I would still be on my learners today,” he said.

PCYC Braking the Cycle is offered at 42 PCYC Queensland clubs across the state with thanks to the support of the Motor Accident Insurance Commission (MAIC) and the Department of Transport and Main Roads.

Since 2013, PCYC Braking the Cycle has helped over 1,600 young people obtain their driver’s licence through a network of over 485 volunteer mentor drivers, over 50 vehicles and the support from more than 50 government, community and corporate partners.

In that time, PCYC Braking the Cycle has been awarded 15 State and National Road Safety Awards, and most recently received a prestigious Prince Michael International Road Safety Award in December 2018.

Youth speak to inspire THE annual Mareeba Rotary Youth Speaks Competition, held last Wednesday night at Mareeba Leagues Club, saw students from across the region present short speeches that inspired all in attendance.

This year’s competition included students from Mareeba Primary, St Thomas’ and Mount Molloy who delivered informative and interesting speeches on a topic of their choosing.

Everything from school life to water and renewable energy was touched on in their speeches, with a winner decided upon by a two-person judging panel.

It was a tough night for the judges but in the end it was St Thomas’ who dominated the podium this year with both the winner and runner up coming from their school.

Harley Cek won first place with a speech on “laughter is the best medicine” and runner up Ewan Hall-Matthews who spoke on renewable energy.

A new trophy was also presented this year in honour of Laurence Tracona who was a long-time supporter of the competition. The trophy was donated by the She Shed and was named the Laurence Tracona

Memorial Trophy.

Public speaking is a daunting exercise no matter your age, which makes the achievements of the five youngsters all the more impressive.

The annual competition encourages youth in our schools to become more comfortable when speaking in front of large crowds.

Businesses on show at awards THE local business community came together on Saturday night to celebrate businesses throughout the Mareeba Shire.

The Mareeba Chamber of Commerce Business Excellence Awards is a bi-annual event that honours business achievement and showcases Mareeba’s finest emerging and established businesses.

The event gives the community a chance to nominate businesses and individuals for an award to recognise their business excellence skills and customer service.

Mareeba Chamber of Commerce president Joe Moro said the quality of nominees was exceptional, and demonstrated Mareeba’s reputation as a leader across a range of industries.

“The awards pay homage to

the business and individuals who go over and above in their chosen industries, and allow us to celebrate the achievements of so many who contribute to our great shire,” Mr Moro said.

“The reason why it’s so important is basically someone has taken the time to recognise a business for the level of service, innovation and excellence that they do.”

Nine local businesses walked away with awards, including Mareeba Working Dog Supplies and Saddlery which won the biggest award of the night – Business of the Year as well as the award for best revitalised business.

People’s choice awards were won by FlexiChoice (community/event of the year), while young Raechal Thorne of Mareeba News was recognised for her customer service.

The celebration event was held at KUR-Cow Barnwell Farm that commenced with a show in the arena followed by a night of celebrations.

Around 115 participants in 10 teams walked continuously for 9 hours at Cancer Council Queensland’s 2019 Tablelands Relay For Life to signify that cancer never rests, so neither do we.

Over $23,000 was raised by teams who rallied together to make a difference, helping us raise awareness and

well with a supper provided later in the evening.

All ages are welcome to attend and no prior experience required.

ONE should remember it was Australia that led the world in granting women the right to vote.

Australia also led the world in farm innovations regrain harvesters Sugar Cane Harvesters (and in Mareeba Tobacco picking machines) and also in many medical discoveries.

If Australia did lead the world in carbon abatement (in a measured and economically responsible way) then just maybe, like in the past others may follow.

Sure the way forward on climate issues is through the ballot box and not holding up traffic but to deny the vast amount of evidence about the planet’s warming trend (hope I spelt planet right) is to have blinkers on.

Council with leadership A LITTLE over 12 months ago my wife and I started a business in Mareeba, servicing both the Atherton and Mareeba areas.

We did the usual due diligence, costs and future projections before starting the business.

However prior to even these checks I had been following the progress of the Mareeba Shire in development in current and future works.

What I was able to interpret from the data was that the Mareeba Shire had positive and sound economic options going forward.

Since starting our business I am happy to say that we are very busy and I owe it to the fact that this Shire we call home has been steadily moving forward in an infrastructure and economic direction for some years now.

I believe it is a result of a great leadership team. I travel a lot around Queensland and firmly believe that the Mareeba Shire is the envy of many Shires.

Whilst everything may not please everyone, it’s important to remember that we rely on the decisions made by our Council and staff.

Sugar industry and water AFTER reading The Express Newspaper, one would be forgiven for thinking that the author or authors of the article on the proposed Nullinga Dam are firmly in Anastasia’s (the State Premier) side in this nonsense debate.

Of course we need additional water security or should we wait until we suffer the misery that the drought areas of Australia are enduring.

As chair of The Tableland Mill Suppliers Committee I have the responsibility to ensure the viability of the Tableland suppliers and the Tableland Mill.

Because a sizable tonnage of Tableland sugar cane is contracted to Mossman Mill, an excess of milling capacity exists at the Tableland Mill.

The freight rate (above $18 / tonne cane) to Mossman Mill suggest to me that Mossman Mill Company would be in a better financial situation without Tableland Sugar Cane bearing in mind this $18 figure is a severe drain on its limited government finances.

But let us not be negative and presume that all will be well with the present situation of Atherton Tableland cane continuing to be crushed at Mossman Mill then we have a dilemma of unused capacity in our local mill and Cogeneration plant.

Nullinga dam will provide the additional irrigation water to expand not only the Tableland Sugar Industry but also all manner of horticulture crops and the future needs of Cairns City without changing the present cost structures of existing irrigators.

The economic contribution of the Mareeba Dimbulah Irrigation Area to Queensland is a testament to what additional water will do and continue to do long after the echoes of this debate subside.

QUEENSLAND drivers have been warned to clean up their acts, after the State’s peak motoring body revealed the alarming number who confessed to being aggressive behind the wheel.

Results from a recent RACQ survey revealed three-quarters of drivers had admitted to displaying acts of aggression towards other motorists in the last year.

New research has revealed an alarming one in four Queensland drivers don’t know what to do if they’re involved in a car crash.

Here are a few tips to point you in the right direction.

RACQ spokesperson Lucinda Ross said a collision could be a traumatic experience, and the driver may even need to make an insurance claim, so the first step was to keep a level head and to ensure everyone involved was safe.

“If you do have a crash, the most important thing is to remain calm – and then make sure you and others in the car are safe. Check if anyone has been injured and ensure everyone is out of harm’s way,” Ms Ross said.

“If your car is blocking traffic and can be moved, get it to the side of the road to avoid additional collisions.

But, if the damage is severe, leave all vehicles where they are and call 000.”

Ms Ross said if the driver needed to make an insurance claim, it was important to record a description of what happened, who was involved, and when and where the crash occurred.

“Take some notes, along with photos if it’s safe to do so as this could make it easier when lodging your claim,” she said.

“Exchange your name, address, phone number, registration and insurance details with the other motorists involved and, if there are other witnesses, get their informa-

tion too because this is what you’ll need for your insurer.

“And remember, in Queensland, you only need to call police to a crash if there’s a fatality or someone requires medical attention, a threat to public safety, if you suspect drugs or alcohol were involved, if the other driver refuses to provide details, there’s a driver with an impairment needing assistance, or if there’s significant infrastructure damage.

“Once you have the information you need, submit your claim and pass all the facts on to your insurer as soon as you can.

Premier bullriding competition hits Atherton

2017 Great Northern Bullriding Series champion Raymond Provost will be one of a number of talented riders who will be competing this Saturday in Atherton.

Children set to show mountain biking skills

THE stage is set for one of Atherton most highly-anticipated events as the Great Northern Bullriding Series comes to Mungalli Dairy Creek Stadium this Saturday night.

The event will pit exceptional riders who come from far and wide to test themselves and their mettle against some of the best competitors and most ferocious bulls the country has to offer.

Two of the most acclaimed competitors that will be taking part this Saturday are Wyatt Milgate and Raymond Provost.

Milgate is a Mareeba local and the 2019 Great Northern Bull riding Champion, with Provost achieving the same feat just two years earlier.

Despite their impressive credentials, they’ll have their work cut out for them as there is a lineup of quality bulls that will challenge their skill and courage.

The bulls that will be on display on Saturday night include: CHUCK NORRIS – Former CRCA Bucking bull of the year, a strong rank bull that is hard to get by. You ride this gentle giant and you will win money.

STRAIGHT JACKET – Grandson of a former “World Bucking bull of the year” Little Yellow

Jacket from the united states of America, this bull is a fast spinning rank son of a gun.

CRAZY TRUCKER (PICTURED) – This is one of the meanest bulls on tour, he has a huge set of horns and loves to hurt cowboys and bullfighters, his reputation is going from strength to strength. This is the bull the cowboys don’t want to draw or get on; he is a rank bucking bull that will pull you down on his head if given the chance. He is a showman though and the crowds love how he prances and poses in the arena when his job is done… Come the championship round he is one to watch for and cheer on.

APPOLO CREED – This bull is the contractors favoúrite and is unridden over three years in the series. He is a big black and white bull (like a jersey cow) with a huge set of horns. He is a fast spinning bucking bull that gets a lot of height when he bucks. You ride this bull and you will win, it’s that simple. The hard part is staying on him for 8 seconds of which feels like a lifetime. This bull is the pride of the Lamont bucking bull family.

For those interested in attending, the gates open at 4pm and the event officially starts at 7pm.

The first stage of come and try series saw a nearly record number of participants. The third stage will be held this Sunday.

THE third stage of a social multistage mountain bike competition is coming up this weekend at the Mareeba Skills Park.

The third stage begins on Sunday at 2.30pm for a 4pm start, the riders will then return to Davies Creek for the final event on November 10.

The Pump’n’Pedals Junior Come ‘N’ Try Series is a timed multistage social competition that features riders under the age of 16 and advocates to

their independent skill levels, unfortunately registrations for this event have closed.

Riders aren’t awarded podium positions after the event, and prizes are given out at random.

The series is separated into age categories for safety reasons; each category also has a certain allotment of laps to be completed on the day.

Children 8 and under are only required to do one lap, however parents are advised

to accompany and support any child under the age of 5.

Ages 9-11 have 2 laps, 1214 have 3 laps and a special category of ‘Elite’ which is open to anyone under 16 and has 4 laps allocated.

Event Co-Ordinator Travis Cummings is extremely pleased with the events progress.

“It’s going really good at the moment,” he said.

“We have lots of people turning out and we almost had

a record breaking number in the first event with 37 riders.

“There are a lot of new faces which is good to see so the sport can grow.”

Strong start to season

Atherton bowler Paul Nasser took two wickets on Saturday.

ATHERTON played host to Barron River in the first Cricket Far North limited-overs game of the season at Loder Park on Saturday.

In what has been an interrupted start to the season the Atherton 1st grade welcomed back regulars Tom Boorman, Fred Pittorino and newcomer Matt Bentley to field a strong line-up.

Barron River won the toss and elected to bat. Atherton's opening bowlers didn't give much away and Matt Bentley picked up an early wicket on his Aussie debut, before the spinners came on early and capitalised on the slowish wicket dismissing the visitors for 110 in the 39th over.

Michael Salerno and Dan Parnell brought their winning form back from rep duties, Tom Boorman tied the batsmen

up and Paul Nasser picked up wickets with consistent line and length in a good allround bowling effort.

Atherton's chase got off to a shaky start losing 2 early wickets, but a solid innings by Tom Boorman unbeaten on 49, supported by Paul Nasser and Fred Pittorino saw them reach the target in the 25th over to claim a 5 wicket win.

Next game is 2-day match, November 9 and 16, against Mulgrave at Miniecon Gregory Oval after local cricket takes another break for representative matches on November 2 and 3.

RESULT: Atherton 5-111 ( T Boorman 49*, F Pittorino 18, P Nasser 16) Def. Barron River 110 (M Salerno 3-32, T Boorman 2-12, P Nasser 2-18, D Parnell 2-18).

MSHS sporting excellence recognised DOZENS of Mareeba State High School students, their parents and friends converged on the school’s Hall last week to celebrate their enormous sporting achievements in 2019.

The night also saw multiple-time track and field World Champion and Winter Olympian Dr Jana Pittman as the event’s special guest, where she spoke about overcoming resilience and what’s required physically and mentally to make it at the elite level in sport.

There were plenty of notable awards handed out on the night, however the most prestigious were announced at the end of the night. The Junior, Intermediate and Senior Sportsperson of the Year identifies those students who have excelled in their chosen sports, and it was Jake Bombadieri, Angus Campman and Hannah McLeod who were the recipients.

Senior Sportsperson of the Year Hannah McLeod said it was an honour to receive the award.

“It’s a great feeling, and I’m glad to see all of the hard work pay off,” she said.

“There’s so many other great athletes here at the school who could’ve gotten this award so it means a lot.

“I would like to thank Mr Hodges and all my fellow students who made it such a wonderful year to compete.”

As far as the School House Awards go, Mckinlay were far too strong across the board as they accumulated the most points at the cross country, swimming carnival and athletics carnival events; thus securing a comfortable overall points win.

Racing under lights returns to Mareeba THE Mareeba Motorcycle Club are hosting another action packed Motocross Under Lights event this Saturday, November 2.

Following on from a successful night meet earlier this year, the club are hoping to bring this seasons racing to and end with a spectacular event for all to enjoy.

FNQ’s own 65cc World Champion Braden Plath will be racing along with a number of Far North Queensland and Queensland champions.

Riders from as young as four years and teenagers and adults will take on a modified track under lights to finish off the 2019 Motocross season in style.

The meet will be held at the Springs Road track with gates open at 3pm and racing from 4pm. Entry is $10 a car and a full canteen and bar, plus camp-

ing is available.
