FOUR students from Mareeba State High have created school history after they won the Open Division of the Far North Schools Chess Tournament held at the Trinity Anglican School in Cairns recently.

Luke Bradley (year 9), Matthew Heggie (year 8), Jack Kruse (Year 8) and Minjinarkle McInnes (year 8) won the

competition by a total of 3.5 points after they came out on top of five of their allotted seven games.

It’s an impressive achievement from the four students, as the Far North Schools Chess Tournament pits the most capable players in the region from year 7 right through to year 12 against each other in a battle of

strategy and nous.

Mareeba State High School’s Gifted and Talented Coordinator Stefanie Prizmic was ecstatic with the students’ performance in the tournament.

“There were more than 350 competitors across five divisions competing in the tournament,” she said.

“The students performed extremely well under the pressure of the competition and have done our school so proud.

“They spend the majority of their time practicing in the library, which goes to show that hard work and practice pays off.”

COOK Shire Council has been ranked among the top 10 per cent of local governments across Australia by an independent research consultancy.

Insync coordinated Council’s 2019 staff survey, along with surveys for 90 other

councils nationwide, and the benchmarked results showed that across five of the seven best practice categories, Cook Shire was in the top 10 per cent of councils surveyed.

“These results really speak for themselves, and are due to the actions of the whole

organisation,” Cook Shire Council Chief Executive Officer Linda Cardew said.

“Our own staff are saying that Council has pulled together as a team to become one of the highest performing councils in the country, as ranked against our peers.”

More than 95 Council staff responded anonymously to the survey, with questions asked in the best practice categories of: leadership and innovation; strategy and planning processes; data, information and knowledge; people; customer and market

focus; processes, products and services; and business results.

The results were benchmarked against 90 other councils, including Sydney, Toowoomba, Douglas, Gladstone, Sunshine Coast, Geelong, Swan Hill and Mitchell.

Farmers fight back THE Reef Laws proposed by the Palasczcuk Government have been met with significant pushback from farmers, particularly sugarcane growers who deem the regulations far too strict and invasive.

One such farmer who is fighting to have the laws loosened is Mareeba sugarcane farmer and Chair of Tableland Canegrowers Claude Santucci.

“The rules and regulations the State Government plan to put forth are going to be a huge impost on growers,” Mr Santucci said.

“They are draconian and almost police state which is why we have such a strong opposition.”

Mr Santucci said the standards growers are required to meet as part of Smartcane BMP is already more than enough.

Smartcane BMP has been working with farmers across Queensland since 2014 to record and verify their practice improvements, and Mr Santucci believes their approach is one that is far more collaborative than that of the State Government.

“With Smartcane BMP we’ve got to record fertiliser and chemical usage, our tilling of soil, our irrigation and water drainage management and ensure that it is at industry standard or above,” he said.

“So we’re doing all of the hard yards already, and with

these rules and regulations proposed by the State Government they have the authority to approach my fertiliser and chemical retailer and access all of my invoices which is a gross invasion of privacy.

“Their big stick policy is extremely scary.”

Mr Santucci said canegrowers are passionate about managing the Great Barrier Reef; however he is calling on the State Government to work collaboratively with farmers to ensure there’s a happy medium reached.

“Work with us and we’ll get the right outcome,” he said.

“If you come with a police state mentality, the dog is going to bite back at some point and that’s what we’re seeing currently from a number of farmers.

“An example similar to what is being proposed now were the rules and regulations implemented by former Queensland Premier Anna Bligh.

“Her program was a miserable failure and her government’s inability to work in unison with farmers provided the same issues that we’re seeing now with Annastacia Palaszczuk’s government.”

“Farmers are more than happy to make improvements to their practices to ensure the long-term health and sustainability of the reef, however we feel our impact is being overblown a bit,” he said.

“We growers are not saying we’re scientists, yet when qualified scientist Peter Ridd dared to question the science, he was labelled as a conspiracy theorist and climate change denialist which is worrying.

White secures second Targa Great Barrier Reef outright victory

WHITE and his co-driving uncle John White guided their hulking Dodge Viper Extreme through the gruelling Tropical North Queensland event and repeat their success from the inaugural tarmac rally last year.

Tasmanian White went into the final day, consisting of six special stages, with a slender 11 second lead before ultimately extending his margin at the finish to 53 seconds.

White made his move on TS14 when he ripped 23 seconds away from his nearest pursuer.

Paul Stokell and Kate Catford tried valiantly to rein in the Whites in their small but rapid Lotus Exige but fell short of a

second successive victory after their breakthrough triumph in Targa Tasmania this year.

Mark Cates and Declan Stafford (Nissan GTR R35) were third outright in a podium that was duplicated in the It’s Live in Queensland GT2 class.

White was delighted to be back on the winner’s list after mechanical troubles ruined his Targa Tasmania campaign in May. “We had definitely had a plan on how fast we had to go based on last year,” White explained.

“The stage times we were doing up until Kuranda were pretty much on par with what I planned was required to win.

“But obviously Paul (Stokell) had done a bit of work and pushed us out of that com-

fort zone a bit.

“We had a bit of a situation on our hands. The run into Millaa Millaa and out to Palmerstone was exceptional. It was 100 percent commitment and a few sketchy moments but we were in the zone.

“It was a good bit of teamwork in the car and John was calling the notes perfectly.”

NSW driver Luke Anear came out on top after a titanic tussle with Targa veterans Tony Quinn and Dale Moscatt to claim the Cairns Regional Council GT4 class.

Anear and co-driver Alan Stephenson (2015 Subaru WRX) prevailed by 31 seconds and did a splendid job to be classified fourth outright.

Downey broke clear after TS13 (Moregatta) and was never in doubt as he won by more than three minutes from Anthony Genocchio/Scott Hamilton (Holden HDT Commodore).

“All the temp issues from yesterday we sorted out so here we are," Downey said. "If our good mate Mr Bray (Michael Bray the 2018 TGBR Classic GT winner) is reading this we were beating his stage times from last year. But seriously Jarrod (co-driver Van Den Akker) had to keep me in check today.”

The final round of the Targa series is in Victoria in November, but in just its second running, Targa Great Barrier Reef has established its credentials as one of the country's finest tarmac rallies.

Flashing school signs for Mareeba State School NEW flashing school zone signs will be installed at Mareeba State School.

Flashing signs play an important role in alerting motorists that they are entering a school zone, reminding drivers to slow down and keep an eye out for children.

Founding member honoured

AHHR President Bob Slater, Minister for Tourism Kate Jones, AHHR Secretary Judy Cooper and Member for Hill Shane Knuth at Parliament last week.

Historic Railway project on track THE Tablelands could be set for a significant boost in tourism after the Atherton-Herberton Historic Railway Inc (AHHR) got a step closer towards securing a feasibility study courtesy of the State Government.

AHHR President Bob Slater and Secretary Judy Cooper joined Member for Hill Shane Knuth at Parliament in Canberra last week to meet with Minister for Tourism Kate Jones to discuss the enormous benefits a project of this nature will bring to the region.

AHHR owns 22km of the old Cairns to Herberton line which reached Herberton in October 1910, and members of the notfor-profit organisation have been working tirelessly since 2014 to grade the track from the Historic Village Herberton to Moomin Siding and from Platypus Park Station, Atherton to Hastie Road.

In addition, this project also includes the restoration of a 1905 Peckett Steam locomotive and a 1911 carriage along with the extension of museum displays at Herberton.

“All this has been done by donations, fundraising events and the hard work of the train crews running return trips on the Tinlander from Herberton Station to the Historic Village Plat-

form,” AHHR Secretary Judy Cooper said.

“Up until now there has been no government support.

“It is hoped to have the steam loco pulling the restored carriage on the track between Herberton Station and Historic Village by the end of the year.

“This, of course, is determined by the amount of work needed on the Peckett.

“When machinery is over 100 years old they can throw up things you least expect especially as a lot of the parts have had to be made by our talented volunteers because they have disappeared over the years.”

Ms Cooper said it is the goal of AHHR to provide a first class tourist rail experience carrying passengers between Atherton and Herberton.

“It will also have an impact on eco-tourism and adventure sports in the area as we will be able to carry passengers to Hastie Wetlands, Carrington Falls and the top of the range,” she said.

“It has already been proven that heritage railways draw in train buffs and visitors from all over the world.

“This will have an economic impact, not just on Herberton and Atherton, but the whole of the Tablelands.”

Ms Cooper noted that if some funding from the State Government comes through it will be used for a feasibility study which, in turn, will help in approaching governments for further funding to finish the track between Historic Village Herberton and Hastie Road.

“This part of the line has several bridges which will need replacing,” she said.

“This will be a major undertaking but if total funding was available it is anticipated that the line could reopen within three years.”

There has been an incredible amount of man-hours that have enabled this project to reach this stage, and Ms Cooper wanted to take time to thank those who have made a considerable contribution.

“Last year the volunteers did over 15,000 hours of their time and this year have already given freely over 13,000 hours,” she said.

“The achievement of the volunteers to date is amazing.”

Member for Hill Shane Knuth lauded the project.

“These historical railways remind people of the history it played as a reliable transport service – from passenger to freight including the war years,” Mr Knuth said.

“AHHR has already tapped into rail enthusiasts and tourists that like to participate in a different venture. I really commend the hard work from the AHHR volunteer team and all they have achieved so far.

Mr Knuth’s passion came from working for the then Queensland Railways for 20 years and understands the line of hard work that is needed to get these train services fully operational.

“The difference here is that Queensland Rail is owned by the State Government and other rails are owned by big corporations who have unlimited funds for maintenance, rolling stock and construction,” he said.

“Whereas this group do this out of their own time and own expense with fundraisers and grants.

“This is why it’s so important to tap into support from state and federal government.”

Mr Knuth said he believes the meeting with Minister for Tourism Kate Jones was positive.

The Minister and her office were impressed with the professionalism and all that has been achieved so far with the project,” he said.

THE Mareeba Gymnastics Hall will be officially named in honour of founding member, Mr Arthur Randolph Lane.

Mareeba Shire Council voted in favour to name the Mareeba Gymnastics facility on Abbott Street after Mr Lane, who taught hundreds of children and adults in the sport of gymnastics for nearly four decades.

Mr Lane was heavily involved in both the Gymnasium and Rifle Club in Chillagoe before moving to Mareeba between 1913 and 1918.

Mayor Tom Gilmore said the sport of gymnastics today is one of the largest sporting

codes within the Shire and its prominence is evidenced by the success and strong following under the Mareeba Gymnastics Club, for which family members of Lane have been a part of more recently for ten plus years.

“Mr Lane should be recognised indeed for his outstanding contribution to the community spanning almost four decades,” Cr Gilmore said “His predominant passion was in the sport of gymnastics and for this reason, it is that both Council and the Mareeba Gymnastics Club feel that it is fitting that the Gymnastics Facility is named in his honour.”

Innovative farmers up for prestigious industry award CANDY MCLAUGHLIN Skybury, Mareeba

“I had a very diverse childhood. I was born in Zimbabwe and my parents were always in search for something amazing, and opportunities which led us to Oman, the United Kingdom, and eventually, Mareeba where they purchased a coffee plantation when I was 10 years old. The environment was similar to Zimbabwe and that hooked them. At harvest, Dad would drive the tractor, I would bin haul and my Mum and two brothers would run the wet plant.”

In 1994, Ian (Candy’s father) introduced papaya to give the farm stability and a cash crop. Today, Skybury is one of the largest growers in the region.

Candy spent her holidays during her university years picking paw paws, but farming was never front of mind as a career choice, but being involved in a business was. She completed a degree in design and communication, spent time living and working in London and also served as a corrections custodial officer at Lotus Glen Correctional Centre.

“We were always encouraged to find our own way, be successful, take every opportunity and run with it.”

By the time Candy returned to the family business, initially on a part-time basis, she was a mother to three children.

In November 2017, Ian offered Candy a position as General Manager. In that role, she provides the linkage between all facets of the business which includes the Skybury Café, NQ Gold Coffee, Skybury Wholesale and Retail Roasting, along with the centre’s research and development facility and nursery, and land

preparation, development and vehicle maintenance sections.

The most critical linkage is the marketing company Tropical Fruit Direct, based in Brisbane, as they provide the link between retailers, wholesalers and the farm.

“The first year (2018) was spent getting back to the basics by spending a lot of time in the field with the crews, walking the paddocks and picking up fundamental knowledge.

“Dad got me to do basic stuff, his philosophy was “you won’t understand, you won’t get it unless you’ve done it yourself.

Candy oversees production on the 470-acre farm, targeted at 200,000 kilograms of papaya every week (more than 60 pallets on a big packing day).

Coffee production is currently sitting at 30 tonnes, down due to seasonal conditions and a change in farming practices, however, Candy has her eyes firmly on reinvigorating this part of the business – and Australia’s reputation as a coffee grower – with some innovative projects.

Candy’s 10-year plan for every section of the business to be profitable and sustainable, is well on its way.

The thriving agricultural business employs around 80 fulltime staff and has a unique arrangement with Papua New Guinea, under the Seasonal Workers Program.

Candy is heavily involved with Tropical Fruit Direct (TFD), founded in February of 2019 as a joint venture between Skybury and JE Tipper. TFD is a grower initiative and moves Skybury into a new direction with respect to papaya sales.

coffee charge with an exciting new collaboration which aims to disprove the theory that Australia can’t produce good coffee and, as a by-product, raise the profile of Skybury.

As growers, Candy and her family have always pushed the boundaries in farming. In 2017, they introduced dual cropping – where they grow coffee and papaya in the same row and with valueadding one of Candy’s big passions she has formed a collaboration with fourthyear marketing and product development students from the University of Queensland who will work with Skybury to develop a business plan for a papaya valueadded project.

Candy is focused on helping grow the papaya market.

“Papaya is consumed by only 10 per cent of Australian households. It doesn’t matter which brand you pick up, as long as we sell a papaya then the whole market will grow. As farmers, it is simply not enough to grow quality produce – you must drive demand for that produce and engage with your customers. That is increasingly becoming the face of modern farming.”

“I was fortunate enough to have a wonderful childhood growing up on a farm in Malanda. Throughout my childhood, my uncle and aunty farmed at Lakeland, so my upbringing was spent in contrast – from the wet, at time drizzly conditions near Malanda, to the blue skies and warmer weather at Lakeland. It was amazing growing up in that family setting. It opened my eyes to so many different crops, from dairy cows to peanuts, bananas, corn and more recently high value horticulture.”

After completing a three-year agronomy/horticultural degree at the University of Queensland at the end of 2007, Paul returned to the family farming operation, Kureen Farming, Lakeland, – and has never left.

As farm manager, Paul, 32, is responsible for the day-to-day running of the family’s Lakeland farming operations which include bananas, avocadoes and broadacre irrigated cropping such as seed sorghum and lab lab and hay.

“After Cyclone Yasi, we started growing bananas. A series of dry years forced our hand to reduce banana acreage to ensure we had the water supplies to get through the tough years. We built a dam on the property to increase water security and this has enabled us to diversify into high value horticulture crops including avocados. It allows us to flex the broadacre cropping, depending on water availability.”

In 2013, Paul received a Nuffield

Scholarship, supported by Horticulture Innovation Australia and the Banana Levy. The scholarship is provided with support of industry bodies, to develop and promote excellence in all aspects of Australian agricultural production, distribution and management. Paul studied fruit quality, biosecurity and waste management in the banana industry.

He has nothing but praise for the lifechanging experience, one that no doubt set him up for the current leadership positions he holds within the industry.

“It opens up your eyes to global agriculture. The Nuffield experience taught me you have to “think global and act local”.

One of the biggest lessons Nuffield taught Paul was to look at the farm as a business. It prompted a rethink on the direction of the family operation which was, at that stage, heavily dominated by bananas.

“We diversified our agriculture portfolio and introduced new crops. Nuffield taught me that we need to keep the

Sustainable farming has also always been front of mind for Paul and his family. It’s part of the ‘why’ in their day to day. From sustainable water practices through drip tape irrigation and automated monitoring irrigation, to solar power to feed the banana packing shed – and the fermenting tanks that provide an extra biological back into the orchard.

In 2016, Paul accepted an invitation to be a director on the Australian Banana Growers Council’s board of directors, sitting as part of the seven-member board. For Paul, the chance to sit on one of the horticulture’s most influential industry representative groups allows him the opportunity to give back to the industry that has given his family so much.

“I didn’t want to be a grower sitting on the fence, passing comments about issues. I want to be in there, helping make a difference and be a part of the decision making. It’s also my way of giving back to the industry.

Paul is also a member of Hort Innovation Marketing Strategic Industry Advisory Panel which provides crucial feedback and advice to the Hort Innovation marketing team (Australian Bananas).

Leadership roles aside, Paul considers his current role – farming – as his biggest achievement.

“I learnt more the first year out of university than the three years at university. Farming is an amazing job where you have to be across so many different things. It’s such a privilege to be able to farm. It’s living the dream at times, but can be a bit of a headache at other times. I love the variety.”

FRANK & DIANNE SCIACCA Pacific Coast Eco Bananas, Boogan Dianne Sciacca remembers the pivotal moment husband Frank started their new farming journey.

“He was looking out the back window over our cane farm and he said I’m throwing more fertilizer on the paddocks and I’m not getting any extra tonnage and my CCS is dropping.”

It began a 30-year journey to develop a unique, trademark certified farming system, Ecoganic, which led to the launch of Pacific Coast Eco Bananas.

Ecoganics is a balanced farming system that works with nature to produce a healthy product while protecting the environment.

Frank’s farming epiphany came at a time of major change in his life. It was the late 1980s and Frank and Dianne had two small children.

Frank and his brothers had developed pond prawn farming – the first in Australia – which led him into scientific research about ecosystems. At the same time, the Sciaccas were looking for a new crop and the banana industry was experiencing growth.

“I vowed if I did another crop, I wasn’t going to farm the way I farmed with sugar. I wanted to farm differently, and not use chemicals and fertilisers.”

Frank said.

Building on his new-found knowledge of the ecosystem, Frank delved deeper into sustainable farming. It signaled the start of a new era for the Sciacca family and the nation’s banana industry.

The unique, award-winning farming system is essentially farming with nature and understanding the importance of the environment and how the natural ecosystem can assist in farming.

It promotes sustainable production practices that are good for the environment and the consumer.

Frank and Dianne developed the system – which combines international environmental management standards with organic based production certification – on their 120-acre Boogan farm.

In 2000, the first commercial trials of the red tipped Pacific Coast Eco Bananas were launched in the marketplace – not without some pushback.

“The agents thought they would pay us like every other product. Within six months we needed to put a price on the product that reflected the product – if you can’t get enough money to cover your costs of farming sustainably, what is the point.”

The red wax tip was no accident.

Frank chose it as branding mechanism, to separate his bananas in the marketplace from conventionally grown produce.

Spreading the message behind the product – and the farming system – is critically important to the farming innovator.

In 2002, Pacific Coast Eco Bananas became a registered trademark and four other passionate farmers joined, with a total growing area of 1000 hectares.

Today, the group ships out around 80 tonnes of red-tipped bananas every week, to wholesale markets in each of the capital cities, along with Woolworths.

Frank and Dianne developed a unique packaging system for the export market and have since had much success send-

ing red-tipped bananas into Hong Kong, with new markets opening in Singapore and the Asia-Pacific.

Frank and Dianne are also in discussions with Growcom to deliver the ecoganic farming system to other industries.

The couple’s passion for the environment has also been recognised. In 2017, they received the prestigious Prince of Wales Environmental Leadership – Reef Sustainability Award. And in 2006, the Queensland Government’s Sustainable Industries Rural Sustainability Award.

While humbled to be recognised, Frank and Dianne believe the accolades are just as important for the other farmers in the group and say their sustainable farming journey continues to evolve – 30 years on.

“If you don’t have the commitment, heart and belief in what you are doing is right you wouldn’t see it through because there are a lot of things that would put you at the point of walking away. “The future of farming is a combination of technology, education and, more importantly, knowing nature’s resources and what role they play.”

FNQ Growers chair Joe Moro said the award recognised and rewarded farming innovators and those farmers who demonstrated leadership in industry and the community.

“Candidates may not necessarily hold executive positions in a horticultural organisations but have been nominated for the industryleading work they do, either in their own operations or as part of an industry or organisation,” Mr Moro said.

“This year, we have three very diverse nominations, both in terms of geography and commodity, which demonstrates the strength of the region’s horticultural industry and our organisation.”

The award presentation is a feature of the gala dinner, which this year is being held outdoors, at the Mareeba United Football Club.

“This move has allowed us to grow the event and deliver an engaging, interactive evening which will celebrate the achievements of our industry and growermembers,” Mr Moro said.

“The organising committee has added a number of new initiatives which are designed to add value for our guests.

“They will sit alongside our dinner traditions, including the auction of local fruit and vegetables, which raises significant money for the local community.”

Students learn road safety MAREEBA State High School year 11 students were given the opportunity to learn valuable skills about road safety as they took part in the annual Rotary Youth Driver Awareness (RYDA) program last Wednesday.

The program was part of Queensland Road Safety Week, an initiative focusing on the variety of dangers that exist when one’s behind the wheel.

The RYDA program is of particular importance during Road Safety Week as it includes young men and women who are preparing to get their learner drivers licence and provisional licence.

“This initiative is all about improving road safety for students,” Mareeba Road Policing Unit Officer in Charge John Ridgway said.

“This specific RYDA program is aimed at year 11 students and aims to provide them with a greater understanding of braking distances, safe speeds and overall driver awareness.”

Given these students here are about to either get their learner or provisional licence, it’s crucial that they are best prepared and RYDA is a program to help with that much-needed preparation.

“We need to ensure that these students are ready for when they get behind the wheel,” he said.

Construction underway on Atheton Hospital redevelopment CONSTRUCTION has begun on the state of the art $70 million Atherton Hospital Redevelopment this week.

Turning the first sod on site last Thursday, Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service (CHHHS) Board Chair Clive Skarott AM said this was a historic moment for residents across the Tablelands.

“Breaking ground is an important milestone in the journey towards these long-awaited improvements for the Atherton Hospital and I’m delighted to see construction begin,” Mr Skarott said.

He said there had been significant planning and investment by the Queensland Government to provide these new facilities for the district.

“This redevelopment will revitalise ageing infrastructure

and focuses on meeting the region’s future health needs,” Mr Skarott said.

“We anticipate this project will provide flow-on benefits to the district by supporting approximately 80 full time equivalent jobs over the period of construction.”

Atherton Hospital Director of Nursing and Midwifery, Dr Ann Aitken said the first building to be constructed will be the Community Allied and Mental Health Building on Jack Street which will include consultation rooms.

It is due to be completed in the first half of next year, with work to start on the Clinical Services building on Louise Street mid next year.

“The Clinical Services building will feature a new emergency department, medical imaging

and sterilisation unit, maternity and birthing services with private ensuite facilities and two operating theatres,” Dr Aitken said.

“The redevelopment will also include a new helipad, three new ambulance bays, and improved internal access including new roads and covered walkways between facilities.”

Dr Aitken said careful planning meant the Atherton Hospital would remain operational throughout the construction period.

“With construction under way, Atherton Hospital staff are now focused on continuing to provide the best health care, while these fabulous new facilities take shape over the next three years,” she said.

“Our aims for this project were to address safety concerns and parking inefficiencies in the street and central business district,” Tablelands Regional Council Mayor Joe Paronella said.

“We’re really happy with the final product and our staff have been receiving lots of positive feedback from passers-by.

Prisoners’ work helps historic Atherton railway stay on track LOTUS Glen Correctional Centre (LGCC) prisoners are helping to keep the AthertonHerberton Historic Railway on track, while acquiring skills which may assist them in gaining employment on their release.

The Atherton Rail line was opened in 1910 and was decommissioned in 1988. The Atherton Herberton Historic Railway Inc (AHHR), a not-for-profit volunteer organisation, has adopted the line and is working to bring it back to life and offer heritage rail journeys in the area for tourists.

A 1.8km section of track is operating at Herberton and there are plans to recommission a further 16km section towards Atherton, which is where six to eight prisoners have been working twice weekly to help volunteers with replacing sleepers and garden maintenance.

LGCC General Manager Richard Butcher said the community service such as helping on the railway line enabled prisoners to engage in meaningful work within the community and possibly gain educational qualifications in rail infrastructure.

“The program is a win for both the people of the Atherton Tablelands and the prisoners,” Mr Butcher said.

“It provides the community with a valuable source of labour, as the project is unique to the location and needs of the area.

“And for many prisoners, this is also the first time they have had a daily routine that includes being gainfully employed, so it gives them real skills that they can use to better themselves when they leave our care and rejoin the community.”

International research sug-

gests that when prisoners are released into the community and have stable accommodation, social support and employment opportunities, they have the best chance of not reoffending, which makes the community safer for everyone.

AHHR president Bob Slater said the prisoners had been of great assistance “The volunteers have noted that with the help of the prisoner group they are three months ahead of schedule,” Mr Slater said.

Multiculturalism at its best Mareeba Multicultural Festival a “resounding success” THERE was atmosphere aplenty at Arnold Park on Saturday as it played host to the annual Mareeba Multicultural Festival.

The festival celebrated the region’s cultural diversity through music and food, and 2019’s instalment was hailed as a resounding success by Mareeba Multicultural Festival President Jennifer Murat.

“The event was fantastic, I’m not exactly sure how many people came through the gates but I’m not sure we’ve had one as big as today,” Ms Murat said.

“With the amount of food stalls and performers we’ve had today, it has definitely exceeded our expectations which is great.”

1. Preheat the oven to 205 degress C. Line the base and sides pan with parchment.

2. Put the dark chocolate and coconut oil in a bowl set over simmering water, without it touching the water. Melt the chocolate and set aside.

3. Process/blend avocado until smooth. Stir the avocado, honey and vanilla extract into the cooled chocolate. Next, add the eggs, one at a time, making sure each is well mixed before adding the next. Stir in the coconut flour and cocoa powder until the batter is smooth.

4. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and spread to cover the pan and fill the corners. Smooth the top and bake for 12-15 minutes.

5. Remove from oven and cool completely in the pan before lifting the brownie from the pan.

For the Avocado Frosting Place frosting ingredients in a food processor or blender along with the cocoa powder and maple syrup. Process/Blend, scraping down the sides as needed until very smooth. Add more cocoa powder or maple syrup if needed to taste.

Spread over completely cooled brownies.

Chooks still alive after dominant win THE Atherton Roosters have kept their 2019 hopes alive after defeating Cairns Brothers 32-4 in an elimination final at Barlow Park on Sunday afternoon.

The Roosters got off to a fantastic start as they jumped out to a 16-0 lead inside the first half hour thanks to some adlib play.

Atherton then managed to kick a penalty goal to take an 18-0 lead into the main break.

Whilst the Roosters held a handy lead heading out of the sheds in the second half, there were periods of play throughout the first stanza where Brothers dominated - however Atherton’s resolve on their own line ensured they kept a clean sheet.

Despite the Roosters’ exceptional defence, Brothers were able to get on the scoreboard in the first two minutes of the second half as they picked up a grubber which pinballed off Atherton defenders.

That would be the only time Brothers would get on the scoreboard however, as the Roosters ran in a further two tries to win in very convincing fashion.

Roosters coach Graham Clark Snr said he was extremely proud of his side’s performance.

“We’re a family here and it was great to see everyone working hard for each other, particularly on the defensive side of the ball,” he said.

“As you’d expect in a finals game against a quality side like

THE final round of the Doctor Mark Bestmann Black Dog Day charity cricket was played on Saturday at Borzi Park in Mareeba.

Mareeba Cricket took on Cassowary Coast with the visitors passing the home sides score of 121. But the day wasn’t about winners, it was all about charity and mateship which was well and truly on display over the past two weekends.

The Premiers Mens win so-

lidified their spot in the top four and should give them plenty of confidence as the finals series rapidly approaches.

Roosters recognised as Club of the Year THE Atherton Roosters are a rugby league club steeped in history which dates back decades, and they have been recognised for their continued excellence as an organisation as they were named the Queensland Rugby League (QRL) Club of the Year last week.

The Roosters have a number of moments throughout their history you can point to where they have exemplified great-

ness – whether it be their 49 year drought breaking premiership in 1970, their back-to-back premierships in the 70s and then again in the 90s, or their thrilling play in 2009 off the back of would-be Dally M Medal recipient Todd Carney.

Even with those accomplishments in mind, their recognition

by QRL last week is arguably the club’s greatest feat.

Rosa Lee Long, who has been involved with the club since the 1960s, spoke passionately about what an award of this magnitude means to her personally and to the club.

“I was over the moon when I received the news – it’s amazing to see the Roosters climb to the greatest heights in country rugby league and this award is just another feather in the cap,” she said.

“I have been involved with the club since my late husband first started playing with Atherton in the 1960s, and over that time I have seen the club go through highs and lows.

“The Atherton Roosters have become like a religion to me and so many other people in the community – I often say I stopped going to church on Sundays and instead went to Roosters games,” she laughed.

“I was fortunate enough to see them break their 49 year premiership drought in 1971 along with their four premierships since.”

Lee Long said she feels the Atherton Roosters stood out from other potential candidates for the QRL Club of the Year award because of a strong football culture that has been forged there from the ground up.

“From the players to the coaches, to the administrators

and to the fans, it’s an extremely well-run club that has plenty of passionate people continually working to better it,” she said.

“We’re lucky to have a wonderful committee that has Darryl Day at the helm – and he deserves a lot of credit for the success we have experienced at the club.

“We are ascending once again and the future certainly appears to be bright – go the Roosters.”

Sydney FC set to play FNQ FNQ football fans are in for a treat this Saturday night as Sydney FC take on FNQ in Cairns.

The A-League club will be in Cairns for a training camp

and will play a friendly against a select local team from the FNQ Football competition at Barlow Park on September 7.

In what promises to be an exciting day for football fans,

locals are encouraged to come along and support the FNQ Select XI team as they take on the national champions, coached

by Innisfail legend Steve Corica.
