Students, schools and communities across the region came alive with characters last week to celebrate Book Week.

The week long annual event is a celebration of books written for young people and hopes to inspire a love of reading.

The events and activities during the week connect readers with books and celebrate the joy of reading – it brings children and books together by celebrating the wonders and fun of exploring the world of books.

This year’s theme was ‘Reading is my secret power’ and for Mareeba State High School the Library was swarmed with students dressed up as their favourite book characters last Friday.

Students had a chance to show off their knowledge of their favourite characters plus some handy arts skills in the creation of their characters.

Food talks at Mareeba’s festival of the year

FOR a diverse and welcome feeling like no other the Mareeba Multicultural Festival is sure to be on many to do lists this coming weekend.

With a huge array of food and fun the festival is sure to be a big one.

Four ladies in particular with some boasting 21 plus years’ involvement in the festival are excited for the upcoming festival and food available.

Ginetta Avolio, Sabrina Liaver, Fatima Mutou, Milli Krauss are all a part of the Multicultural committee and have been running stalls at the annuls festival

for years.

Mrs Avolio runs the Italian food stall, Mrs Liaver runs the greek food stall, Mrs Mutou runs the Albanian food stall and Mrs Krauss runs the German food stall.

The ladies believe that the festival is a great way for people to get out and enjoy many different cultures through the one universal language; food.

The feeling of community spirit and bonding has been ingrained within the festival for many years and keeps getting stronger.

“The festival has a huge impact on the community,” Mrs Avolio said.

“It just keeps getting bigger

and bigger every year.

“If people support us we will still be here for them.” Mrs Mutou said.

With constant support from the community the festival has been one of renown within the community, with streets being blocked to accompany the annual event.

People as far as Sydney and Melbourne have been known to attend the festival and have thoroughly enjoyed it.

“The idea of the food was to have different cultures and more home cooked food than commercial food,” Mrs Avolio said.

“We love doing the festival and look forward to doing it every year.

“We wouldn’t be doing it for 20 years if we didn’t enjoy it.”

It’s free to come and enjoy a day of food and entertainment at the Multicultural festival and even have a chance to win prizes.

“You don’t have to get a ticket or anything for the prizes, there are many prizes available on the day to be drawn,” Mrs Liaver said.

“There is nonstop entertainment from 9am in the morning till 5pm in the afternoon.

“There is dancing and music, good fun for the family” The ladies all encourage people to get out and experience a day like no other on the Tablelands.

“We have food, we have entertainment, where else are you going to find something like this,” Mrs Liaver said The committee is open to any new cultures that are looking to display their food and culture during the Multicultural festival.

Interested people can apply online at the Multicultural Festival website and have their application approved by the committee for next year’s 2020 Multicultural festival.

The Mareeba Multicultural Festival is on this Saturday at Arnold Park, Mareeba with entertainment and food all day from from 9.15am right through till 5pm.

North Johnstone Transfer back on the table after Nullinga Dam stalls MEMBER for Hill Shane Knuth MP said the North Johnstone Transfer project is back on the table after several meetings with Minister for Natural Resources Anthony Lynham MP and much controversy over the Nullinga Dam. Last week Mr Knuth once again raised the project in Parliament stating he will continue to support Nullinga Dam but has no faith in any level of government considering the project has been on the agenda since the 1950s with bucket loads of studies and no commitment to construction.

“The Nullinga Dam was promised by the former premier Bob Borbridge. Campbell Newman also committed to a study, which was followed by another feasibility study ordered by the federal government.

“Then we had a business case study by the present state government and now the Queensland State opposition are proposing yet another study.

“The bottom line – 70 years on no holes have been dug, no concrete poured and no extra water,” Mr Knuth said.

“If we are only going to get ‘more feasibility studies’ for Nullinga Dam, it’s time to get something tangible and more affordable in the interim – The North Johnstone Transfer project was designed during the construction of Tinaroo Dam in 1958 when engineers recognised the catchment would not be enough

Funding helping local animal owners in need

THE Mareeba Animal Refuge is entering its third year of a government funded project to help assist with the desexing of animals.

The grant gives $4000 to the Animal Refuge to be able to assist with the desexing of animals whose owners are in a state of financial instability.

Manager of Mareeba Animal Refuge Jennifer Walsh says that she expects the funding to run out quickly so people had better apply soon.

“A lot of people won’t register their dogs until they’re desexed,” she said.

“This is because it’s much more expensive to register a pet that hasn’t been desexed.

“We’ve got the money now

to do it, we’re just trying to get the message out that we can start (desexing).”

In order to apply for a free desexing as part of the grant, residents will need to show evidence of their financial status and that they are eligible for the service.

A form will be supplied at the refuge and must be filled out, and after all the due process the owners can go to any of the three vets within the Mareeba Shire to get their pet desexed for free.

All animals that are desexed as a part of this program are required to be microchipped.

Fix the Potholes MILLAA MILLAA Falls, regarded as one of the best tourist attractions in Australia, would have the worst pothole road going to Millaa Falls.

Does not say much for the Tableland Regional Council who talk about promoting tourist industry, but do nothing much to repair our council roads maybe because it is in the Millaa area.

I have noticed roads are being neglected for long periods. I suggest the Mayor and officals to travel our roads and see for them self.

Once Council took pride in fixing pot holes as soon as they appeared but that was in the past.

No Maize Festival for Atherton this year ONE of the Tablelands’ most anticipated annual social events will not be taking place this year as the Atherton Maize Festival has been postponed until May of next year.

It has come as a surprise to a number of people on the Tablelands, as the Atherton Maize Festival is an event steeped in history which dates back to its inaugural year in 1962.

A spokesperson for the Atherton Maize Festival made the announcement via a statement on their website and Facebook page.

“The Maize Festival Com-

mittee are committed to continuing an event that represents such a vast and diverse community,” they said.

“We have listened to our community and decided to change our annual event to May each year.

“There will be no Maize Festival in 2019.”

The next Atherton Maize Festival will take place on May 16, 2020.

The Tableland Patrol Group has taken the opportunity to recognise and remember police officers who have passed away in the line of duty.

Tablelands Patrol Group Inspector Russell Rhodes will be heading down to Canberra next month to participate in his fifth Wall to Wall.

Remembering the fallen

WITH the National Police Remembrance Day less than a month away, the Tableland Patrol Group took the opportunity at their monthly social club meeting last Thursday to once again remember one of their own.

Former Mareeba police officer Casey Blain, who tragically lost his life in a car accident just outside of Georgetown on March 29, 2013, was acknowledged at the meeting as his parents Ray and Lynette Blain were in Mareeba to present a gift to the patrol group for supporting Casey and his family before and after his death.

“Six and a half years ago we lost Casey, and throughout that whole journey the police family has been with us every step of the way, and I’m sure they’ll continue to be with us moving into the future,” Casey’s father Ray Blain said.

“Because of that support, we thought it would be timely to give something back as it will make us feel like we’re moving forward together.”

Mr Blain presented the Tableland Patrol Group with a replica bell from the Queens-

land Police’s Tactical Response boat that was launched under the name of Casey Blain in Brisbane.

“We’re extremely proud to present this police station with the bell, and hopefully it acts as a reminder and reflection of the wonderful person Casey was,” he said.

In addition to acknowledging Casey, another important way the Tableland Patrol Group are getting involved in remembering fallen officers includes the Wall to Wall Ride which is held in Canberra on Saturday, September 14.

The Wall to Wall Ride acts as a special tribute that honours the

service and sacrifices of many law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty.

Tableland Patrol Group Inspector Russell Rhodes will be heading down to Canberra next month to participate in his fifth Wall to Wall, and it’s an initiative he described as “extremely important”.

“I will be going down this year with Senior Sergeant Trotter who recently retired, Cairns Police’s Russ Parker, and retired inspector from Brisbane Steve Imhoff,” Inspector Rhodes said.

“It’s a chance for all four of us to represent Queensland Police as well as those officers we knew personally who lost their

lives in the line of duty.

“There were two officers who I knew so well, and I ride to acknowledge them as friends and as police officers who were integral to policing in the Far North.

“Bamaga Senior Constable Sally Urquhart tragically lost her life in the Lockhart plane crash on May 7, 2005 while Constable Casey Blain passed away in a traffic accident on Newcastle Road roughly 20 kilometres outside of Georgetown.

“I worked with both of them and I love the opportunity to go down to Canberra and remember their contribution to the force.”

Broadacre crops to be tested in FNQ A $50 million industry could stem from a test crop of oilseed in Far North Queensland launched today as one of three projects designed to diversify the crops industry across Australia’s north.

The $1.6 million oilseed industry development project is part of the $4.7 million investment that also consists of a cropping trial and skills-building project ($1.6 million) and a broadacre cropping project ($1.5 million).

Run by the Cooperative Research Centre for Developing Northern Australia (CRCNA),

the trials will support pastoralists wanting to diversify and try their hand at growing crops that have so far only grown in cooler, drier climates.

Minister for Resources and Northern Australia Minister Canavan said the small plot trials of oilseed crops on the Atherton Tablelands could lead to a North Queensland industry delivering up to 50,000 tonnes of seed per year and worth up to $50 million.

“Alongside that, the broadacre cropping project aims to expand the grain crops grown within the Gulf Rivers region,

to assess their profitability and if they could also be produced across northern Australia,” Minister Canavan said.

“The cropping trial is expected to better inform growers and agri-businesses on cropping investment and risks and provide additional feedstock for the northern cattle industry.

“The project strengthens the Liberal Nationals Government’s actions in developing the north’s economic and social potential.

Patients, staff, family and friends can ring the bell for milestone events like completing treatment, reduction of cancer markers, reaching a birthday and family occasions.

The Atherton Oncology Day Unit treats a variety of patients, some having chemotherapy with an aim to cure, some having supportive therapy and others who receive palliative treatments.

Clinical Nurse Lorraine Binnie said the bell was donated by the community. “The Tablelands Music Lovers held a concert to raise funds for the bell and the Atherton Men’s Shed donated the timber and their time to prepare and polish the slab ready to receive the bell,” said Lorraine.

“The three projects will significantly drive forward the crop industry in Northern Australia by increasing skills and market competition, as well as opening up export potential," Minister Andrews said.

“The outcomes of the work will bring widespread economic benefits to the local and regional economy and pave the way for further expansion of Australia’s flourishing agri-business sector.”

Townsville-based Senator Susan McDonald said the trials were recognition of the importance of rural Australia as a key

economic plank of the nation.

“This is a great opportunity to realise the true, bold potential of the regions,” Senator McDonald said.

“Oilseed crops include soya bean and sesame which are in growing demand for use as healthy edible oils and stock feed, so this can open up multiple revenue streams for North Queensland farmers.

“Initiatives such as this mean more jobs in regional areas which will give a welcome boost to business in small towns, and incentives for people to move out of the big cities.”

and level of awareness of visitor feedback on an annual basis.

“There is set to be a lot of consultation with visitors and operators as we move forward implementing this exciting fiveyear plan of Tourism Kuranda,” Cr Wyatt said.

“We will also be encouraging local operators, investors and other stakeholders to develop new and exciting visitor experiences that align with our goal of increasing visitor numbers to boost the local economy,” Cr Wyatt concluded.

MALANDA Dairy farmers Greg and Bronwyn English were extremely successful at the recent Royal Queensland Show held in Brisbane after their cow and heifer Eacham Vale Precious 7 and Eacham Vale Erin 4 were named the Supreme Champion Dairy Cow and Supreme Champion Heifer respectively.

Exhibitor and owner Greg English was thrilled to have come away with the win.

“It’s absolutely unbelievable,” he said.

“They were required to travel two days to compete at the event

whereas most of their opponents only had to travel a couple of hours.

“So to be able to secure two Supreme Champion titles is quite remarkable.

“It’s certainly something we didn’t expect, we were hoping to do well and did everything we could to best prepare the cows for the event, however we couldn’t have envisioned the amount of success we had.”

Mr English said the judges noted that they wouldn’t have changed a thing when critiquing Eacham Vale Precious 7 and Ea-

cham Vale Erin 4.

“You can’t get a better report than that,” he said.

“And in addition to the two Supreme Champions, our son Jerry came runner-up in the Young Judges category while Millaa Millaa’s Rebecca Daley also achieved second place in the Junior Parading competition.

“So not only is it great for the English family, it’s great for the area as these cows produce the local brand that is Malanda Milk.”

Police promote road safety at seniors expo POLICE from the Mareeba Road Policing Unit and officers from Transport and Main Roads, attended the Seniors Ageing Well Expo at Merrylands Hall in Atherton last week to answer questions and promote road safety.

Senior Constable Richard Belcher, was kept busy answering a variety of questions in relation to, safe distances between cars and bicycles, correct fitting of child restraints for transporting grandchildren, medical requirements for licencing and the legalities and use of mobility scooters.

Sgt John Ridgway said “We were delighted to be involved, it’s important to engage with the community at events like this, to discuss road safety and re-educate drivers about road rules.”

“Over time road rules evolve, reinforcing and familiarising the community about changes is key to improving

road safety.

“Unfortunately older drivers on the Tablelands, are statistically over represented in fatal and injury crashes when compared to state averages.

Most older drivers make adjustments to their driving routines when they realise their driving ability is altering.

Ongoing self-assessment to determine if, how and when older drivers should drive, combined with active

consultation between doctors and eye specialists are vital to maintaining road safety.”

APPROVED INSPECTION PROGRAM - DOGS LOCAL GOVERNMENT ACT 2009 & ANIMAL MANAGEMENT (CATS & DOGS) ACT 2008 In accordance with section 133 of the Local Government Act 2009 and section 113 of the Animal Management (Cats & Dogs) Act 2008 Mareeba Shire Council resolved at its meeting on 21 August 2019 that a selective approved inspection program will be carried out on properties within Mareeba Shire, to monitor compliance with the registration requirements of the Animal Management Act 2008 and compliance with the provisions of Council’s Local Law No. 2 (Animal Management) 2018 regarding the provision that owners must provide a proper enclosure to prevent their dogs from wandering.

Council’s Authorised Officers will be visiting homes between the hours of 6.30am and 7.00pm Monday to Sunday, with the majority of inspections to be carried out during normal working hours, or at such time depending on the circumstances of the householder. The programs will run for a period of three months.

Program Times 1. The selective inspection program for compliance with the registration requirements of the section 46 of the Animal Management (Cats & Dogs) Act 2008 will commence on 1 October 2019 and end on 31 December 2019.

2. The selective inspection program for compliance with section 14 of Council’s Local Law No. 2 (Animal Management) 2018 - duty to provide proper enclosure and prevent the animal f r o m wandering will commence on 1 October 2019 and end on 31 December 2019.

Properties to be Inspected Properties that may be inspected include properties in the town of Julatten and surrounds and any other streets in the shire identified as areas having issues with problematic dogs.

Access to Resolution and Program The public may inspect a copy of Councils resolution and the program at Councils office until the end of the program. These documents will also be available to view on Councils website www.msc. qld.gov.au until the end of the program.

Targa event trains eyes on FNQ FAR North Queensland roads will yet again be graced by the presence of some high performance automotive machines for this year’s Targa Great Barrier Reef event.

The event, scheduled for August 30 to September 1, has revised and expanded its course from last year’s event.

Now including a Mareeba leg and lunch stop as well as a trip to the locally infamous Springmount Raceway, this year’s Targa event is set to be a big one.

With 10 separate categories for entry a vast array of cars will be shown, from classic muscle, to modern performance, the event will have something for everyone.

Media Spokesperson Gordon Lomas is excited for this year’s event.

“All competitors came away last year saying that this is the new Targa Tasmania,” he said.

“The event had a massive impact in its first year, and we are expecting great things from the region.

“The numbers were capped last year to 215 entrants but that has changed this year with 270 drivers.”

Mr Lomas credited the event’s success to the local support shown for the event.

“One of the big things last year was the local population,” he said.

“There were a lot of people out and watching the event.

“It was great to see.”

The decision to include Mareeba and Springmount Raceway was due to the idea of including as much of the Tablelands as possible.

“Mareeba is a key town in the Tablelands so we wanted to include it,” Mr Lomas said.

“There was a plan to include the coastal road from Cairns to Port Douglas but that didn’t go ahead.

“Events like this only get stronger and stronger each year so expect to see a definite lift to a whole new notch.”

On the representative scene the Eacham Panthers hosted the inaugural North Queensland Country Championships. North Queensland Country teams were selected from Eacham, Innisfail, Mt

lins, Djerome Mooka-Salam from Ravenshoe and Luke Misener from Atherton, were named in the U15 Merit side, with Luke being name U15 Player of the Carnival. Keyarn Porter from Malanda named in the U16 Team and Hannah Geary named in the U16 Girls team.

Finals hopes alive for Bulls after win The Mareeba Gladiators donated five sets of past jerseys last Thursday to Vanuatu, ensuring the players in its five-team competition will now be able to play with a number on their back.

THE Mareeba Bulls Premier Mens outfit have kept their finals hopes alive after they defeated Innisfail United 2-1 at home on Sunday.

The win proves crucial in the context of the Mareeba Bulls’ season, as their finals chances took a considerable hit in their last fixture against Edge Hill as they were beaten 4-0 in very convincing fashion.

With just three rounds remaining before the end of the season, this weekend sees a mouth-watering clash between Mareeba and fourth placed Stratford Dolphins.

With a potential finals berth up for grabs, there’s sure to be plenty of feeling in the game.

Fortunately for the Bulls, the game will take place at Lindsay Australia Stadium, a ground that

has acted as somewhat of a fortress in recent rounds.

The Bulls will also take confidence into he match as they were victorious 3-1 against Stratford in round 13.

For those interested in watching this all-important clash, the game is at Lindsay Australia Stadium this Saturday.

Cricket for charity

THE first round of the Doctor Mark Bestmann Black Dog Day charity cricket matches was held on Saturday at Borzi Park in Mareeba.

The match saw the Mareeba Cricket side take on the 2019 over 35s Masters Games Gold medalist, the Malendrinos from Mareeba.

After 35 overs the Malendrinos won the fun charity match.

For the Mareeba side it was Steven Harnischfeger’s first day back at cricket after a few years break and he made an impression after getting a hat trick and ended up with 4/34.

Salerno scored the highest with 56 and retired, while Brendan Falvo topped scored for Mareeba.

The second round of the Doctor Mark Bestmann Black Dog Day will be played this Saturday, August 31, at Borzi Park.

The match starts at 11am with the Mareeba side taking on Innisfail.

The charity event is in honour of Dr Mark Bestmann, a past President of Mareeba Cricket.

Everyone is welcomed and enouraged to come and support and share this great event with friends.

Dam Canoe Club secures grant OUTRIGGING continues to grow steadily as a sport on the Atherton Tablelands, and it’s set to grow further as The Dam Outrigger Canoe Club were the beneficiaries of a $24,000 grant courtesy of the Community Benefit Fund.

The funding will be used to purchase new craft for the club, providing their club’s members and travelling clubs improved training and competition conditions.

“We’ve been awarded $24,000 to acquire more craft – and with that money we are currently looking at a lightweight six man,” The Dam Outrigger Canoe Club coach Ralph Seed said.

“We already have one but it’ll be great to have another competitive boat at the club that is safer and more efficient.”

Seed said the grant comes at a good time for the club as there has been an increased interest in the sport on the Tablelands.

“We’ve experienced a growth in numbers in recent times, with retirees, professionals and a number of juniors coming through the club which is great to see,” he said.

“Club Secretary Colene and her husband David Clifton applied for the grant earlier this year and our success in acquiring it shows that the club is heading in the right direction.

“We’re so fortunate to have facilities here that lend itself to outrigging all year round and hopefully we can capitalise on that as a club and continue to encourage people to take up the sport.

“We had a training camp here recently and we were lucky enough to have Matt Abbott from the Coconuts Outrigger Canoe Club instructing it.

“It was really well-received and because of its success we’ll be looking at having one once

or twice a year.”

TOP five spots have been secured by the Atherton Senior Roosters three sides with all playing finals following the final round of premiership competition games played over the weekend in the Cairns District Rugby League.

The Roosters first grade and under 18 teams both play elimination finals while the reserve grade finished the season in second place and have a second chance in the finals.

On Saturday night at Tully, the Roosters did enough to

win 40-6 over the Tully Tigers who are booked for first wooden spoon in many years. The Roosters did rest several players as they warm up for the finals and young under 18 guns Darcy Gillespie, Kyle Wyatt and Keifhar Rosas were given a run in the top side.

In reserve grade, the Roosters overcame a determined Tully side to deliver two late tries and take the points 32-20.

The 2019 final points tables for the CDRL is: First Grade – Mossman 28, Innisfail 27, Yar-

Gators finish 2019 season on a high after thriller win THE Mareeba A-Grade side have finished their season in style as they won a thriller 1816 at Petersen Park against the Edmonton Storm on Saturday night.

Trailing 16-6, the Gladiators managed to rally and secure the win with a late try to Joshua Ward to win 18-16.

While their 2019 season has been an inconsistent one, Mareeba managed to win three of their last four fixtures, giving their young squad confidence

heading into 2020.

In Reserve Grade, the Gladiators continued their strong form as they defeated the Edmonton Storm 32-26.

Despite the win, they just missed out on securing a finals berth due to Kangaroos’ and Brothers’ 32 all draw.

Gladiators Reserve Grade coach Cam McPherson said he would like to thank all the boys and helpers for their great efforts this year.
