Farmers the toast of region HUNDREDS of Tablelands growers and businesses came together to celebrate the region’s strong farming community on Friday night for the annual Mareeba District Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association dinner. While Ravenshoe farmer Warren Jonsson took out the Charlie Nastasi Horticultural Farmer of the Year Award, sisters Karolyna and Raychelle Srhoj (pictured) marvelled at the giant pumpkin on display at the Mareeba International Club. More than $20,000 was raised for local charities on the night, which was celebrated by a record crowd of over 400 people. FULL STORY – THE LAND

senseless hoons Lives endangered and wildlife killed in street rampage EXCLUSIVE By Michael Serenc

A RECKLESS rampage by a group of sadistic hoons has residents of a Mareeba street fearing for their lives. Riding in a white dual-cab 4WD ute, the group tore through Eli Cl about 10:50pm last Wednesday night, performing a burnout before running down and killing two wallabies. An Eli Cl resident, who asked not to be named,

said she was sickened by the act of cruelty and feared for the safety of her neighbours. “I think their behaviour is appalling. The wallabies are protected animals, they’re part of the attraction of living up here and that’s not a humane way to kill them,” she said. “It looked like they were deliberately targeting the wallabies, swerving all over the road trying to get them. “They’ve come down the street chasing them.”

The mum-of-one said there were several families with young children and household pets who lived in the street. “One of my neighbours was seeing off some relatives or friends who were visiting earlier that night, and I could hear their children out the front,” she said. “Had that incident happened around the same time and the hoons had been drinking, it could have been a lot worse.”

Wallabies and other native animals are commonplace in the area, which backs on to bushland. “There’s a lot of wildlife around so I think these hoons are finding they’re a really easy target,” the resident said. “They could have damaged property because of the high speed they were driving at, they could have easily taken letterboxes, cars or anything else that was around.” CONTINUED Page 3

Mareeba State High School film student Chau Truong created a mental health video with the help of student council secretary Chloe Hrkac, vice-president Cyrena Myrteza, president Erin Phillott, treasurer Jacinta Russo and teacher Tim Ralph.

Powerful video raises awareness of mental health A GROUP of compassionate high school students have helped create awareness about mental health through a powerful video. Mareeba State High School’s student council worked with talented filmmaker Chau Truong to create an informative and uplifting video on the impact of depression and anxiety on young students and what they can do to seek help. The video, made in partnership with mental health organisation the Black Dog Institute, has so far generated more than

110,000 views on Facebook since being posted on August 24. It followed a shorter clip produced by Chau on Mental Health and Depression Awareness Week in May, which aimed to educate students on the issue through several activities in honour of Dr Mark Bestmann, who passed away earlier this year. “I gave them my input into how the student council could do that first video and that reached a lot of people and the whole community,” she said. “After that, we wanted to do a second

video so we could really promote what Dr Bestmann wanted us to share with everyone.” The informative video features appearances by several of the school’s senior students and Dr Bestmann’s wife, Margie. “The students really appreciate it being out there and we do have some people who struggle with their mental health,” Chau said. Student council vice-president Cyrena Myrteza said the video built solidarity amongst the student population.

“It lets others know there’s more people to talk to and they’re not alone,” she said. Student council mentor and teacher Tim Ralph said the video had been watched by other schools as far away as Dalby and Chinchilla. A third video is also in the works for another mental health week next term. To watch the video, head to the Mareeba State High School Facebook page and click on the videos tab.

Push to get tourists road wise A TABLELANDS cop has urged tourists to school up on Queensland road rules before visiting the region. Tablelands Patrol Group Inspector Roger Whyte said it was critical tourists familiarised themselves with local road rules before hopping in the car to start their adventure. “The unfamiliarity of roadways, not only by tourists but by those local motorists utilising them, can be problematic,” he said. “It’s probably timely to warn all motorists to take

care on the roads they are travelling and to abide by the road rules.” Insp Whyte said tourists should “drive during daylight hours and have a realistic expectation about the distances they need to travel”. “Obviously, they will also need to plan and be better equipped with regards to what accommodation they’re intending on utilising,” he said. “And they also need to have some maps as to where they’re travelling and read those before they drive to

their destination.” General tips given to tourists by police include being aware that Australians drive on the left hand side of the road, holding a valid driver’s license and knowing the legal blood alcohol limit for the license you hold, observing speed limits, wearing helmets on bikes and motorbikes, making sure your vehicle is roadworthy and registered and wearing a seatbelt when driving. Department overrides council over fire station TABLELANDS Regional Council will be virtually powerless to stop Herberton’s new fire station from being built in a residential street, after the State Government took over the approval process. Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) will now go through the Ministerial Designation (MD) process, which bypasses the regular council process and leaves a final decision on the site up to the State Government. QFES secretly bought a property on 38 Perkins St last month - before letting neighbouring residents know of their intentions.

The site was recommended for purchase by the Public Service Business Agency, who then recommended QFES undergo the MD process. The $1.2 million station will include facilities for SES training and room for two fire trucks. But a QFES spokeswoman said the MD process was “typically undertaken for the development and delivery of other state-wide QFES capital works”. “Essentially, this is normal practice, not the exception,” she said. Under the MD process, QFES must prepare an initial assessment report for stakeholder con-

sultation, followed by an initial assessment report for public notification. Public notification and community consultation is then sought, before the publication of a Final Assessment Report (FAR). The FAR is due for consideration in November, while public consultation is scheduled between September 30 and October 21. Far Northern Region Acting Assistant Commissioner John Bolger previously told The Express QFES intended to build the new station in Perkins St and any decision to shift the site would be “political”. Dalrymple MP Shane Knuth said he was

aware QFES intended to go through the MD process “from the beginning”. “The council had a number of preferred options, but in the end, it’s a State Government decision,” he said. “I am aware that the department will be consulting with council in the very near future.” Mr Knuth said he wanted to hear residents’ concerns during public consultation. “I’m hoping to get feedback,” he said. “Obviously, the community wants a new fire station and the location is always going to be a sticking point.”

The resident said she found another two dead wallabies along nearby Seary Rd the next morning, with skid marks also evident on that section of road. Council and the police have since been contacted about the incident. Tablelands Patrol Group Inspector Roger Whyte vowed to try and catch the perpetrators. “Hooning won’t be tolerated and any reports of vehicles hooning will be thoroughly investigated,” he said. “Improper use of motor vehicles, whether it be on a road, street or in bushland, is very dangerous, not only to the occupant but members of the community.” Insp Whyte said the hoons’ decision to run down two wallabies “smacked of blatant stupidity”.

“It further endangers not only the occupants but other community members should the vehicle veer out of control,” he said. Tablelands Wildlife Rescue (TWR) treasurer Clelia Croxford condemned the hoons’ act of brutality. “It’s a horrible thing to happen in this day and age. These are our native wildlife,” she said. “If the police find them, I hope they throw the book at them.” Mrs Croxford said TWR often had to care for animals which had been tortured by sick individuals looking for kicks. “It’s really disheartening from a wildlife carer’s point of view…It’s such a real shame,” she said. Wallabies and other mammals being chased can also develop a condition known as capture

myopathy, which causes their muscles to seize up and suffer a slow, agonising death. Mrs Croxford suggested that the hoons, if caught, should spend some time volunteering with her group caring for orphaned and injured wildlife. She urged anybody who saw a dead wallaby or kangaroo to check its pouch for a joey. “Often there are orphans left behind…As carers, we are thrust into horrific scenes like that, having to go and peel off carcasses from the roads,” Mrs Croxford said. The latest incident comes after a pack of dogs attacked and killed a dozen kangaroos at Mareeba Golf Club in July. To report injured wildlife or volunteer, contact Tablelands Wildlife Rescue on 4091 7767 or visit www.tablelandswildliferescue.com and download a membership form.

Top marks for Tom

DYNAMIC DUO: Tom Braes with wife Karen after receiving a medal of the Order of Australia earlier this month.

By Michael Serenc

A YOUNG Tom Braes never thought he’d one day end up holding the scales of justice. The son of a croc shooter and one of six children raised in Mareeba, Mr Braes reckons he was more likely to end up as a truck driver or something similar before a job offer as a court clerk in Mt Isa saw him leave school at 15 and start what would be a long and fruitful career in law. The rest is history and now Mareeba’s long-serving magistrate has been given the ultimate honour, awarded a medal of the Order of Australia at a ceremony in Cairns earlier this month. “It’s a very prestigious award and it’s something that I am very proud of,” he said. “My community involvement over many years has been a joint effort with my wife being behind

me and assisting with anything that I’ve done.” Appointed as Mareeba Magistrate in 2004 and starting in his role the following year, Mr Braes said he loved being a part of the community he grew up in and enjoyed his volunteer work with the Mareeba Lions. “Some people seem to be drawn to volunteering,” he said. “There are many people in our community locally, across the state and the nation who are our unsung heroes who give their time voluntarily day in, day out.” Throughout a glittering career, Mr Braes has been involved with several different organisations across the North, including the Charters Towers Country Music Festival and Charters Towers and Mareeba chambers of commerce. He was even part of the committee that helped establish Bendigo

Community Bank in Mareeba a decade ago and lobbied for the construction of the Mareeba Heritage Centre. “Mareeba has a great community spirit,” Mr Braes said. “We have the benefit of having a Lions Club, Rotary Club, Chamber of Commerce and dozens of other associations, all of whom are working to promote the town.” The father-of-four also credited his wife Karen for her unwavering support throughout his career, acknowledging there were some tough times along the way. “We had four children under five years of age, so it was a very demanding time for her while I was studying to become a solicitor,” Mr Braes said. “As I got more involved in community work, she has typed hundreds of minutes, reports and grant applications.”

Mareeba Shire Council boss recognised MAREEBA Shire Council’s top bureaucrat has been given a glowing endorsement by a peak local government body. Straight-talking CEO Peter Franks (pictured) took out the Queensland Local Government Managers Australia (LGMA) Manager of the Year Award at a conference on September 8, recognising his “outstanding leadership and management qualities”. Mr Franks, who has been in the top job since council de-amalgamated from Tablelands Regional Council in January 2014, said he was humbled to receive the award. “You can’t win these sort of things without an incredibly good team behind you and that’s what we’ve got here,” he said. “We started off with a very motivated workforce because everybody who came over wanted the new council to succeed, and

they’ve kept that going which is great.” Originally from South Africa, Mr Franks has 15 years’ experience in local government, having previously been CEO of several regional councils across Queensland including Livingstone and Mackay. Known for his friendly and approachable nature, the father-of-four said it had been an attimes challenging role as council battled with the cost of de-amalgamation to remain viable. “The forecast for Mareeba Shire Council was that we weren’t going to survive financially,” he said. “The staff wanted us to survive and to do that we had to look at doing things differently.” Mr Franks said he threw out the rule book when it came to top-down management style, instead consulting with staff to give them the tools they needed to do their jobs as easily and

efficiently as possible. “The staff came up with a whole range of different ideas, but it also reinforced the idea of ‘That’s your job, you go and do it and we’ll back you’,” he said. “Anyone can come in and see me at any stage if they have issues…I know it’s a bit cliché saying your door is always open, but it is.” Mr Franks said a personal highlight was seeing the Queensland Auditor-General’s report for the 2014/15 financial year, which noted Mareeba was one of only two de-amalgamated councils that achieved an operating surplus. “That was the highest priority I had and we ticked that box,” he said. “We’ve just got to constantly chip away at it and become more sustainable, deliver better services to the community and be smarter on how we deliver it.”

CLEALL’S

Centre petition raises stakes By Michael Serenc A MAREEBA pensioner has upped the ante over the town’s proposed $21 million shopping centre, handing a petition to council in support of the project. The petition, expected to be tabled by Mareeba Shire Council at next month’s meeting, has attracted almost 1000 signatures from locals in support of the centre after a three week campaign by Joan Moore. “I started it just to help Mareeba grow,” she said. “I can see the town dying and I don’t like to see that happening. The shopping centre will attract people to Mareeba and attract a bit of business.” The project, which has yet to be formally presented to council, hinges on council approving the purchase of a small, triangular 1100m2 parcel of state-owned land reserved for aged housing it has trusteeship over. If successful, local developer Reedlodge

Pty Ltd will have enough land to press ahead with a development application to council. If approved, the shopping centre would be built along Byrnes St, across the road from Mareeba Plaza. While Mrs Moore submitted the petition too late for it to be included on the agenda of today’s council meeting, The Express understands it will be discussed amongst councillors at a closed workshop afterwards. Once tabled at the next meeting on October 12, councillors will have the option to either reject the petition, receive and note it or receive it and ask CEO Peter Franks to prepare a report. Construction of the centre is expected to take between 12 and 18 months, generating between 200 and 220 direct and indirect jobs. Once built, the 7000m2 centre, which will include a major supermarket, is expected to sustain between 200 and 250 direct and indirect jobs. “We’re about to get another class of students graduate from school and what are they

going to do?,” Mrs Moore said. “The centre will bring people to town and keep them here. A lot of people shop in Cairns and Atherton. “To me, that’s why shops are closing because people are not supporting them and they can’t pay their rent.” Mrs Moore said feedback from those who signed the petition was largely motivated by a desire for better shopping options in Mareeba which lessened the need for people to go elsewhere. “It would generate excitement and interest for people to watch the shopping centre being built,” she said. “I would sincerely hope that council approves it.” The petition follows a Facebook poll run by The Express in July, which showed 88 per cent of respondents were in favour of the shopping centre. 75 per cent of respondents to the poll were women.

Action needed on street parks I WOULD like to respond to Councillor Voyce’s suggestion, to look at small measures and a community engagement officer to fix the problem with parking in Catherine St in Tolga. The council needs to get out of their ivory tower and get out to the community more and stop using excuses of not having enough money in the budget. When the council does something, they should be doing it right the first time and not try and do a quick fix at the Tolga School. Those children are our future. The council seems to want to spend $200,000 on a project at Priors Creek which we don’t need and will not bring much more business to the main street, but can’t spend the money to help to keep the school children safe from traffic. I am very disappointed and I speak as a part of the Tolga community on how the council always tries to push aside the important things and waste money on projects that are not as important. Remember, you can’t replace a child’s life. Darryl Drury, Tolga

Time to challenge ‘climate cult’ Climate alarmism has become a massive and expensive global cult, but before we consider its religious aspects let’s look at the basic science. Carbon, along with hydrogen and oxygen, is the basic building block of all life on Earth – it is not the “poison” it’s been made out to be.

The Express reserves the right to edit letters

Animals, including humans, emit CO2 and plants absorb it; this is the biological carbon cycle that underpins all life on Earth. Atmospheric CO2 has increased due to human activity; this increase has greened the world and is the main reason the planet can support 7 billion of us. CO2 does warm the atmosphere; but insignificantly, the effect is logarithmic and the infrared absorption bands in which CO2 fits are almost saturated. In Earth’s deep past, CO2 has been ten times the present concentration and life thrived. Earth’s climate changes continually and this is normal, with warmer being far better for life than colder; there is no such thing as a climate ‘steady state’. The oceans are alkaline and are not acidifying, sea levels have been rising since the end of the last ice age and the effect of manmade CO2 on that process is immeasurably small. All the alarming predictions are based on computer models that are woefully inadequate to address the complexities of the Earth’s climate systems. Our sun is the single biggest threat to life on Earth and if it behaved like other similar stars it could wipe us out, literally, in a flash. It is what powers and directs our climate. Now to the climate cult: the “climate scientists” are the self-appointed high priests; the “climate models” are the all-knowing deity; the “climate predictions” are the prophecies of doom; the “settled science” is the dogma and indisputable truth; “carbon pollution” is the devil and coal from under the ground is his demon army; “climate believers” are the congregation; “climate deniers” are the her-

etics and infidels; “emitting carbon” is the unavoidable sin for which all must repent. This cult has followers throughout the media, governments and universities; it seeks to impose its views on all people everywhere; it makes fundamental mistakes with science; it makes alarming predictions for an unknowable future; it is abusive towards its critics; it refuses to debate its dogma; and it continually demands public money to underwrite its self-directed missions. The cult’s high priests effectively control democratically-elected governments via inside influence and narrow electoral preference margins centred on the votes of its congregation, while the bulk of the population gets little say but are left to pay the bills. Like all cults, climate alarmism will fail when its prophecies don’t materialise, but in the interim the cost to taxpayers and disruption to the ongoing evolution of our technological civilisation, (the only civilisation that has ever lifted people out of slavery), is immense. Peter Campion, Tolga

than the rest of the world. Ms Grace is giving racing communities across the state lip-service and hollow promises in the hope people don’t join the dots. It has become clear recently Ms Grace is under pressure around the cabinet table to perform, and it looks like racing has been put on the scrapheap while she concentrates on keeping her job and her union mates happy. The LNP left racing with a bright future, following a historic new wagering deal which increased prize money and promised key racing infrastructure improvements across the state. As a result, confidence was high, certainty was assured and the industry had a long term plan for growth. It has taken the Palaszczuk Labor Government only 18 months to destroy this and shatter confidence. Ms Grace doesn’t seem to understand there is more to being the Racing Minister than just turning up at racetracks to hand out trophies for the cameras. Jon Krause. Shadow Racing Minister

Labor’s blow to country racing

Local jobs should come first

The racing industry has stalled under the incompetent Palaszczuk Labor Government in what’s another kick in the guts for regional communities across the state. Racing Queensland appointed members last week to its three-industry advisory panels, but alarmingly there is not one representative on any panel who hails north of Bundaberg or west of Toowoomba. Sorry Rockhampton, Mackay, Longreach, Townsville, Mt Isa, Cairns, and every race club in between, you aren’t that important according to the Palaszczuk Labor Government. The appointment of these “industry advisory panels” highlights the fact that Labor’s new governance model already isn’t working. What’s even more alarming is Minister Grace Grace was unaware the appointments had even been made when a media outlet contacted her about them. Furthermore, one of the state’s major turf clubs wasn’t even consulted on the appointments or wasn’t even advised the process was occurring. It just goes to show how south-east centric this Labor government is. The Palaszczuk Labor Government must have a very different definition to “consulting”

Last week, I travelled up to the Torres Strait Islands and one thing I noticed regarding the accommodation industry on the islands is the lack of local staff and the same criticism by many locals. People and business owners in remote and isolated places need to grasp the fact that while the motto “locally owned” is indeed a good thing, it doesn’t necessarily translate to locals being employed. In remote townships the option of cheaper labour sourced from tourists and backpackers on working holidays may seem ideal with looming overheads which are often deliberately exacerbated by suppliers and providers to remote areas. However, this kind of saving can sometimes prove to be a false economy. In remote townships with few residents and even fewer retail outlets, employing locals at a standard award rate will eventually contribute greatly to the local economy of a small island or community. Profit making is one thing but while this may help out individual bank accounts it doesn’t necessarily do anything for the local economy. By opting for local employees this would both circulate money in a small place and symbiotically pick up the slack all round. I believe that business owners have a responsibility to their local communities and have an important and crucial role in the facilitating true economic growth for benefit of everybody. Mrs Thomas, who is part of the Tenkile Conservation Alliance and was named Australian Geographic Conservationist of the year in 2013, said she was inspired to start the crowdfunding campaign after attending a seminar run by innovation group Startup Tablelands earlier this year. “One of our biggest challenges is trying to find enough funding to keep us going financially because most grants exclude wages,” she said. “Part of the reason why I’ve joined Startup Tablelands is to learn a lot more and network and try and be a bit more entrepreneurial in our approach to fundraising.” Mrs Thomas’ crowdfunding success has already seen her give a talk to Startup Tablefollowed Mr and Mrs Thomas in their quest to end hunting of lands members earlier this month. the tenkile and also provide vital water and sanitation services to With funding now secured for the documentary’s post-promore than 10,000 people living in PNG’s Torricelli Mountains. duction, Mrs Thomas said the film would be released early next “We lived there full-time for just under 10 years,” Mrs year with a pre-screening event to be held in Melbourne this Thomas said. “We certainly believe there are important and possibly essential health services being closed down due to a lack of money.” State Health Minister Cameron Dick wrote to CHHHS board members last Friday asking them to justify why they should not be sacked in light of an $80 million operating deficit for this financial year. The budget black hole, discovered by consultancy firm Ernst and Young, is more than 10 per cent of the CHHHS’s operating budget. “Since coming to office, the Palaszczuk Government has increased funding to the Cairns and Hinterland HHS by more than $110 million in its two budgets from $667 million to $778 million - an increase of more than 16 per cent,” Mr Dick said. “The government expects all hospital and health services to live within their operating budget and deliver on their service agreements.” But CHHHS chairwoman Carolyn Eagle hit back, saying the board had identified up to $40 million in savings this financial year through working with Ernst and Young. “We understand and share the minister’s concerns and have been actively working with the Palaszczuk Government and the Department of Health,” she said. “Financial challenges have included becoming the first regional hospital in Australia to install electronic patient records, Digital Hospital, whilst the hardworking staff continued to deliver quality care. “The board, as local members of the community, is strongly aware of the importance of the need for a sustainable and well-functioning health system.” Dr Donald said the CHHHS was making cuts with little consultation amongst staff and the community. “We believe it’s very harmful in terms of service provision when people are suddenly told what’s being done,” he said. “Some of the decisions we’ve seen appear to have been made without any understanding of the consequences.”

FRESH doubts have emerged about nurse-to-patient ratios in Tablelands hospitals as the region’s health service faces financial turmoil. Mandatory minimum nurse-to-patient ratios were introduced by the State Government for medical and surgical wards in all hospitals on July 1, stipulating one nurse for every four patients on morning and afternoon shifts and one nurse for every seven patients during night shifts. But a nursing source said the ratio system was thrown into disarray when a patient’s needs required an additional nurse, forcing other nurses in the hospital to pick up the slack. “The problem comes that when they have five nurses to 20 patients and there’s patients requiring an acute level of care, they don’t give them any more staff,” she said. “So one nurse may end up with six or eight patients on a morning or afternoon shift, which is not the idea of the legislated ratios.” The staffing shortfall comes amid allegations that seven hospital beds in Mareeba were closed recently due to a lack of funding. Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service (CHHHS) CEO Clare Douglas denied this was the case. “The seven beds at Mareeba Hospital are not ‘closed’ but are used as ‘flex beds’. The beds are opened and staffed whenever there is patient demand,” she said. “Funding for Mareeba and Atherton Hospitals has not reduced compared to last financial year.” Ms Douglas added that the mandatory nurse-to-patient ratios had resulted in a “slight increase” in nurses for both Atherton and Mareeba hospitals. Occupancy rates over the past six months for Atherton and Mareeba hospitals were at 63 per cent and 57 per cent respectively. Together Queensland union public health vice-president Dr Sandy Donald said hospital management should be up front about planned service cuts, the number of beds available and how they are used in hospitals. “What the union has always said is we accept the health service can’t spend money it doesn’t have, but if it’s not announcing what it’s cutting, then there’s no way local people can go to their local member and say “We need this service, why can’t the health service support it?,” he said.

The National Boys Choir of Australia will perform at Destiny Hall from 7pm this Sunday, followed by the 14-strong Queensland Symphony Orchestra on October 5 at 6:30pm. Known for their iconic Qantas commercials, the Boys Choir is one of the oldest children’s choirs in the country, celebrating their 50th anniversary in 2014. The 42-strong choir’s repertoire will include works by J.S.Bach, John Rutter, Angels are Everywhere by American composer Daniel Pinkham and choral selections from Les Misérables. Featuring Atherton violinist Brenda Sullivan, the Queensland Symphony Orchestra will perform a program including Vivaldi’s best-known piece, the popular Four Seasons, and other great works for string orchestra. In Vivaldi’s time, orchestras commonly performed with a violinist directing instead of a conductor. The performance follows this tradition with the orchestra’s concertmaster, Warwick Adeney leading. the screenplay would be a pale imitation of previous works, relying on familiarity and the actors to hold on to the magic. I need not have worried; the familiarity and the actors are there all right, but the screenplay rises to the occasion and is a great example of writing for the screen. I should also mention director Sharon Maguire, who directed the 2001 original and again nails it. You don't have to have seen either that 2001 original or the 2004 sequel (Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason) to get a kick out this final instalment of Bridget's diary; it works perfectly well as a stand alone. For those of us who have followed her from the start, it's a delicious and satisfying closure.

The LAND Jonsson takes out grower’s award for innovation LEADING THE WAY: Charlie Nastasi Horticultural Farmer of the Year Award winner Warren Jonsson with Mareeba District Fruit and Vegetable Grower’s Association president Joe Moro and Lucy Nastasi, wife of the late Charlie Nastasi.

A HUMBLED Warren Jonsson has paid tribute to the Tablelands’ strong farming community after winning the Charlie Nastasi Horticultural Farmer of the Year Award. The Ravenshoe farmer, best known for his two Jonsson’s Farm Market stores in Cairns, said he was blown away by Friday night’s Mareeba District Fruit and Vegetable Grower’s Association (MDFVGA) annual dinner. “I’m stoked, it’s unbelievable,” he said. “This is the first time I’ve come to this dinner and it’s blown me away what a grand night it is. “They get a lot of support from various industries which is just unbelievable.” Mr Jonsson owns about 4000 head of cattle at a 25,000ha sta-

tion at Mt Garnet, as well as growing potatoes, avocados, tomatoes, capsicum and eggplant at his home farm in Ravenshoe. The father-of-three said he saw the region as having massive potential as a foodbowl and now wanted to establish export markets in Asia for local producers through government organisations like Austrade. “We can grow 85 per cent of plants on this earth in this region…. You’ve got such a diverse climate in this area and nowhere else in Australia has that,” Mr Jonsson said. “Unfortunately, our production costs are fairly huge but we’ve got to look at these markets. We need Austrade and some of these government organisations to tell us where these opportunities are.” Mr Jonsson said distance was the only “limiting factor” to un-

The start of week 14 saw several upcoming scheduled jobs move into the high risk category and this required a scheduled maintenance stop to be booked to address the issues in a controlled manner. Prior to the maintenance stop, a water supply main ruptured under the milling train, flooding the receiving tanks and juice pump pits. No. 2 Mill, No. 6 Mill, No. 2 Boiler ID Fan and No. 2 Boiler Tubes were also maintained during the stop. The jobs on the boilers required some ramp down and ramp up time which added to the overall downtime. The CCS levels have remained stagnant again this week allowing for consistent crushing rates. leashing the region’s potential in both domestic and overseas markets, but that could be overcome with clever marketing strategies. “With modern technology, we can quite easily oversupply any market in a short period of time,” he said. Mr Jonsson also paid tribute to the Nastasi family and their long-time involvement in the MDFVGA and his own family for their support. MDFVGA president Joe Moro praised all five nominees of the award, saying it was difficult to choose a winner from such a competitive field of entries. “We have a wide range of very innovative farmers doing some amazing things,” he said.

Barras to mark milestone

MILESTONE: Dimbulah Barras Football Club secretary Edward Balzarolo can’t wait to celebrate the club’s 60th anniversary.

PAST and present Dimbulah Barras players will come together to celebrate the club’s 60th anniversary next month. Founded by European immigrants in 1956 with a single senior team, club secretary Edward Balzarolo said generations of locals had been involved both on and off the field. “For a small town, it’s an achievement,” he said. “We’ve had many players that have represented in regional and zone teams and a few that have made state teams.” Several well-known representative players have come through the Barras’ ranks over the years, including Fab Soncin, Raymond Watkins, Clint Dal Santo and Daniel Schincariol. The club were also North Queensland champions in 1961 and 1963. Nowadays, the Barras field five junior teams and one senior second division side. “It’s a great family club and it certainly gives an opportunity for younger children and adults to play in a team sport, which is not available anywhere else in Dimbulah,” he said. “Through that team environment, you get comradeship, enjoyment and connection with your community.” Balzarolo said there had always been a healthy

rivalry between Dimbulah and Mareeba, adding a bit of extra spice to local clashes. “It’s developed into a derby-type game, like the Manchester or Liverpool derbies in England,” he said. “Even this year, when we played Mareeba in second division at home, that was our biggest crowd of the year.” The Barras will host a dinner at its club house on Park Ave on October 15, starting in the early afternoon. “Hopefully we can get a few of the original members to come along and reminisce and re-live a few of the old stories,” Balzarolo said. “It’s a chance for everyone to connect again, have a yarn and share their experiences about playing soccer in Dimbulah.” To purchase tickets, call Edward Balzarolo on 0429935474 or call Dimbulah Healthy and Beauty on 4093 5350. RSVP is October 8. Past and present members who would like to showcase club memorabilia at the dinner can drop it off to Dimbulah Healthy and Beauty on Raleigh St. Photos and newspaper clippings can be scanned and emailed to dimbulahbarras@gmail. com

New lights make club shine

LIGHTING UP: Mareeba Bulls junior players Holly Lewis, 11, and Breanna Gambino, 10, in front of the new playing lights at Borzi Park.

A SUITE of new lights installed at Borzi Park has added another level of professionalism to the facility. The 10 new 2000 watt lights, which cost about $60,000 to install, were funded jointly via a State Government $35,000 grant, $10,000 interest free loan from council and the remaining $15,000 from the Mareeba Bulls. Bulls technical director Alex Srhoj said the new lights would enable the club to play more senior competition games at night and hold longer training sessions. “It also gives us an opportunity to rest the

main playing surface,” he said. “We can now hold two or even three games on a Friday night. “It just makes the club more commercially viable….This has been a dream for 10 years.” The lights, which are split between four posts, were switched on for the first time last Wednesday. Srhoj said the lights finished “a big part of the jigsaw” for Borzi Park, with the next project to develop the club’s new Bendigo Bank fields for junior games.

Gymnasts ready for state titles

Grandfather rides for good cause

TIRELESS: Tony Nastasi during the Cardiac Challenge.

HANG TEN: (L-R) Oliver Tye-Good, Samuel Coyne, Callum McCarthy, Frank Tulloch and Angus Ford have all qualified for Junior State Championships.

A TALENTED crop of Mareeba gymnasts will go toe-to-toe with the state’s best athletes this weekend. More than a dozen gymnasts will represent Mareeba Gymnastics Club in the Junior State Championships in Brisbane starting this Friday. The group, which will field six girls and seven boys, will compete across several skill levels in separate Women’s Artistic Gymnastics (WAG) and Men’s Artistic Gymnastics (MAG) categories. Young gymnast Frank Tulloch, 10, said he was stoked to be again competing on a state level, the third time he had qualified but his first as a MAG Level 5 competitor. “I’m expecting tough competition from

the Barron Valley boys from Cairns. They train about 15 hours and we only train about 7 hours,” he said. “I just want to try my best and get some personal bests.” Frank said he dreamt of one day competing in the Olympics. Talisha Eade, 9, said she couldn’t wait to compete on the bars in the WAG Level 4 division. “They’re just fun,” she said. A total of 22 junior Mareeba gymnasts qualified for the State Championships after competing in last month’s Far North Queensland Junior Regional Championships, but not all were able to go due to travel costs. Club coaching director Kelly Tulloch was

thrilled the club was able to repeat its stunning success at regional level after having a similar number of gymnasts qualify for the State Championships last year. “It’s amazing,” she said. “I have to give all the credit to the kids. They’re here three days a week, they’ll even turn up sick sometimes and I’m actually sending them home. “Their dedication is unbelievable.” Mrs Tulloch said the “best of the best” would be competing at a state level and the experience would be invaluable for her young gymnasts. The State Championships will wrap up next Monday.

Bulls sunk in dour final Bulls supporters cheer on Paul Ruiz in Saturday’s Grand Final. Photo by Leevi Elmes.

HEARTBROKEN Mareeba Bulls coach Alex Srhoj has rued his side’s lacklustre grand final performance after going down 2-0 to Stratford on Saturday night. The Bulls were on track to make history as the first team to win three straight FNQ Premier League grand finals after back-to-back wins in 2014 and 2015. But it wasn’t to be as a clunky attack and some sloppy defence at Endeavour Park cost the Bulls’ chances of making the three-peat. “Everyone’s pretty gutted,” Srhoj said. “I was pretty disappointed we allowed them the opportunity to take the lead the way they did. We dug ourselves a bit of a hole.” The Dolphins piled on the pressure early in the first half to catch Mareeba on the back foot. Despite some close shots on target by former A-League midfielder Wayne Srhoj, Stratford strikers James Love and Joe Rusch exploited the Bulls’ leaky defence. The pair went close a number of times before a Rusch header off a Dale Goodwin free kick gave Stratford a 1-0 lead in the 41st minute. The Bulls were stung by Rusch again barely three minutes later after a fumble by keeper Dima Sinelnik gifted their second of the night. “We didn’t click in the first half at all,” Srhoj said. “A few of the guys maybe let the occasion get to them a bit in the first 20 or 25 minutes.” A renewed level of intensity saw the Bulls bounce back in the second half, but Mareeba’s attacking woes continued as Stratford’s defence held solid despite several close calls. A worrying collapse on the field by Bulls mid-

www.theexpressnewspaper.com.au

fielder Ben Fresta about 10 minutes in had him taken away by ambulance with a collapsed lung, youngster Jaydon Wells replacing him. Mareeba’s luck looked as though it was turning when a red card to Dolphins midfielder William Beverley in the 70th minute for a late tackle gave the Bulls hope of mounting a comeback. But Stratford’s stoic defence held out to clinch the title. While lamenting the loss, Srhoj paid tribute to his young side, which managed a grand final appearance despite rebuilding after the retirements of several key players last season. “Once the dust settles and you look back over the year, it’s definitely an achievement to make the grand final and finish second in the league with a relatively new side,” he said. “We’re not satisfied but we can be proud of it.” Srhoj thanked the Bulls’ supporters for their tireless efforts throughout the season. “The support we had on Saturday night was fantastic. The crowd was absolutely outstanding,” he said. “It’s been a good year and they’ve played their part. “I look forward to next season.” Stratford coach Doug Baird said his side’s win had “been a long time coming”. “I think it’s been 16 years since we’ve won a grand final and we’ve lost the last two leading up to this against Mareeba, who are always the benchmark of the competition,” he said. “You know you’re going to get a really tough game. “Both sides played some reasonable football and we came out with a good result.”

A FORMER Mareeba man has powered his way through more than 330km of road to raise money for charity. Nastasi’s Takeaway founder Tony Nastasi completed his 10th Mount Franklin Cardiac Challenge ride on Monday after a gut-busting three days travelling from Cairns to Cooktown. The grandfather-of-five told The Express he was inspired to take on the Challenge after his wife’s father passed away from a heart attack. “I’ve met so many great people through this ride,” he said. “A lot of the guys that come on the ride, they’ve never rode before and next thing you know they’re doing Ironmans, road races, triathlons – it turns them into different people.” Mr Nastasi had raised more than $5000 when The Express spoke to him on Sunday, helping the Challenge to reach its target of $350,000 for cardiac services at Cairns Hospital. “The FNQ Hospital foundation has bought so much good equipment over the years from the money raised,” he said.
