Committee members of Mareeba State School’s 125 year anniversary celebration’s came together on Saturday morning to exhume the time capsule which was entombed in the “Garden of Memories” within the school grounds 25 years ago.

Former student and P & C president Stephen Srhoj, who was present 25 years ago at that

ceremony, reminisces about the bygone era with fond memories.

Stephen recalls a centenary committee being formed back then “as it was a very big milestone with thousands of people who either attended the school in the past and teachers who may have taught here coming from all over the country.”

“The capsule we just ex-

humed has been sitting in there for 25 years and at the time various members of the school and public were invited to place something of significance within it,” said Mr Srhoj.

“Some chose to put in letters to people, photos, school memorabilia – small items because the time capsule is only quite small,” he said.

THE discount period for the half-yearly Mareeba Shire Council Rate notices ends this Friday, September 14.

Rates can be paid in a number of ways, including BPay, Australia Post Billpay, EFTPOS including debit and credit card, cash and cheque, over the phone and in person.

Big Instant Scratch-Its win

After more and more closures, the Mareeba Chamber of Commerce is demanding the State Government provide real and tangible solutions to the Kuranda Range Road’s reliability.

The second unplanned road closure of Kuranda Range Road in less than a month has prompted business leaders to demand the State Government provide real and tangible solutions to the road’s reliability issues.

A truck accident on Friday (31 August, 2018) caused the closure of the range for two hours to allow a crane to remove it. It comes only two weeks after another truck rolled at the bottom of the range, again requiring cranes to lift and remove. It closed the road for seven hours.

Mareeba Chamber of Commerce President Joe Moro said

the Kuranda Range Road was an important link between Cairns and Mareeba for a myriad of purposes including, but not limited to, business, industry, agriculture and tourism.

“A safe, efficient and reliable road network is one of the most important issues for our community and our vision to see Mareeba prosper,” Mr Moro said.

“Estimates show current traffic movements to be around 10,000 a day, with that figure expected to increase to 15,000 by 2030, as the liveability of the northern Tablelands attracts more people.

“However, Mareeba’s business community fears any vision to grow the local economy will be hampered from an inefficient road network.”

Mr Moro said the entire community deserved a safe, efficient and reliable road.

“Our business community relies heavily on the road for freight and transport services,” he said.

“A large number of people who reside in Mareeba and Kuranda commute daily to Cairns for work.

“The road is also a critical link in the transport of produce

destined for southern markets and export, via the Cairns Airport.”

Mr Moro said the community appreciated the government’s progress in maintaining and improving the road through various upgrades and safety improvements, but more was needed.

“The government needs to continue to invest heavily in the road to ensure it meets current and future demands,” Mr Moro said.

“Our community can’t afford to be hamstrung by an unreliable road network.”

Three outstanding farmers will contest the annual Charlie Nastasi Horticultural Farmer of the Year Award at an awards dinner in Mareeba this Friday night. Hosted by the Mareeba District Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association, the prestigious award recognises outstanding innovation and or exceptional leadership in the Tableland horticultural industry. The 2018 nominees are Con Iacutone, Tara Gauci-Quintieri and Peter Inderbitzin...

Con Iacutone

Emerald Creek – Citrus Citrus grower Con Iacutone has left no stone unturned in his pursuit to be a successful farmer.

With the support of his wife Carla and family, Con has faced the trials and tribulations of farming head on, enjoyed the success and always farmed with business in mind, while giving back to the industry in leadership roles.

Raised on a tobacco farm at Chewko, before moving with his family to a farm at Emerald Creek in 1971, a life toiling the land was not his first preference.

“I wanted to be a radio television technician but Dad wanted a hand to pay off some of the farm at Emerald Creek, so we decided I would stay for a couple of years,” Con remembers.

Farming was hard and physical in the 1970s – everything was done by hand – but it gave Con a solid foundation and direction for his future.

He took over the farm, introduced mechanised harvesting and started looking at diversification options.

“In the 1980s I started thinking about diversifying,” Con explained.

“I always attended meetings to see how the industry was going.

“I like to know what happens in my business. I want to know new things and I don’t want to be the last one to know.”

Con was among the first growers of Murcott mandarins

in the Mareeba region in the late 1980s. While there was little longevity in the crop due to pest issues, it gave Con the impetus to continue along the diversification track.

Armed with more information, Con planted Imperial mandarins, for which he enjoyed success for about 25 years.

Mangos were a mainstay on the 38 hectare farm for several years, with Con’s fruit sent to export markets in Japan, Singapore, Russia, France and the Middle East, a testament to his work to produce consistent quality.

“I’ve never been afraid to try new things,” Con said.

“You have to try and get something that works for you.

“But you need to farm correctly, farming isn’t just a lifestyle.

“Do your research, take your chances and have a go.”

Over the years, Con has grown, pumpkins, grapefruit, capsicum, paw paws, zucchini and lettuce.

But its also what Con does to improve on-farm efficiencies that sets him apart in the industry.

When faced with a spray drift issue, Con purchased a new machine – one of only two to be imported into the region at the time.

“I settled on a Greentech blower with an alternator and three-phase electric fans which are positioned to spray all they way up the tree so you get even chemical distribution, from top to bottom,” Con explained.

“The idea is that you push the

air down, so if the spray doesn’t hit the tree its pushed down onto the ground.”

Con has converted his orchard to an automated water and fertigation system which allows him to program watering and liquid fertiliser remotely.

In between running his 5000tree orchard, Con has found time to give back to the industry.

He has been a member of the Mareeba District Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association executive for 15 years, including several periods as deputy chair, and was a delegate on the citrus committee under the former Queensland Fruit and Vegetable Growers. He was among growers who helped transition the citrus committee to Citrus Australia.

“I want to help the industry go forward,” Con said. “I like to be up the front if something new is happening and I want to be involved as much as I possibly can.”

Con credits a rural leadership course run by the Department of Primary Industries in the 1990s with reigniting his passion for farming. He was surrounded by farmers of all different backgrounds – sheep, beef cattle, wheat and dairy cattle – but connected with similar issues and problems.

“We were all unhappy with what we were doing, me included, and looking for something new,” Con said. “It made me think about what I was doing and reinforced for me to make the most of being a farmer.”

Honouring a pioneer The Charlie Nastasi Horticultural Farmer of the Year award recognises ‘outstanding innovation and/or exceptional leadership in the Tableland Horticultural Industry’ and is named after one of the greatest industry pioneers in the region.

The award bears the name of Carmelo “Charlie” Nastasi, the first president of the Association, who passed away in 2013.

A Mareeba-based mango and former tobacco famer, Mr Nastasi was recognised as a

driving force in the local industry’s development and was instrumental in organising the region’s transport through involvement in the Committee of Direction (COD).

At the age of 26 Mr Nastasi bought his parents’ tobacco farm, soon becoming the youngest director of the Tobacco Leaf Marketing Board.

In the 1970s he made the made the shift from tobacco to horticulture, designing what is believed to be the first sweet potato harvester in 1978 and

the first mango-packing machine in 1984.

He became the first president of the Association in 1975 and held that position for about 20 years.

Various awards were presented to Mr Nastasi over his career, including the Pyramid Achievers Award, the Australia Day Medallion and the Inaugural Rotary Pride of Workmanship Award.

Mareeba District Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association president Joe Moro said the an-

nual award continues to honour the legacy of Charlie.

“End each year all the nominees have been outstanding,” Mr Moro said.

“It’s always hard to pick a winner as they are all deserving, but each winner has showcased the region with their leadership and innovation and honoured the legacy of Charlie Nastasi.” Mr Moro said.

Previous winners include Stephen Scurr, Tony and Joe Bianco, Mark Reppel, Warren Jonsson and Matthew Perkes.

Tara Gauci-Quintieri Mutchilba – Lychees, longans and lime

At 27 years old, Tara GauciQuintieri is making her mark in the horticultural industry, developing innovative products and championing change.

Born and raised on the family orchard of some 5000 lychees, longans and limes on a property at Pin Road, Mutchilba, the second-generation grower recalls a childhood in amongst the fruit trees.

“I remember every day after school not doing homework but getting off the bus and packing fruit or watering,” Tara said. “We were always doing something.”

Life got busier in 2005 when the family purchased another farm, and established a 20,000-fruit tree orchard.

But with the greater production came a problem – the high cost of importing crates for longans.

“With longans we have to import crates from China three months before the crop,” Tara explained.

“We would estimate production based on the flowering but

“When it got dry, there were losses.

“You could see your crops suffering to the tune of thousands of dollars a day.”

They farmed dryland for five years until they had the opportunity to purchase a second farm with access to water.

With a secure and reliable supply of water, the family forged a successful horticultural business, introducing a number of fruit and vegetable crops including hay, peanuts, corn, various grass seed and legumes, sorghum, watermelons, cotton, sugar cane, potatoes, paw paw and a variety of beans, to Lakeland. They were able to grow a lot of the crops out of season due to the mild frost-free winters.

Over 20 years ago, they decided to grow bananas – a crop traditionally grown on the coast.

Today, the fruit makes up the majority of the family’s farming enterprise.

But there’s another product for which Peter has made a name for himself – compost – and in doing so, is helping reduce the carbon footprint, improve soil health, productivity and create a legacy for future generations.

Peter’s passion for the compost is undeniable.

“The most exciting thing is that we are achieving above average production and our soil is

When Peter arrived in Lakeland in the mid 1980s, there was huge paddocks of rich, red volcanic soil as far as the eye could see.

Bare land, waiting to be developed.

Faced with rising costs for good agricultural land on the Atherton Tablelands, where Peter and his family ran a dairy and cropping business since arriving from New Zealand in the 1970s, Peter turned to the undeveloped region, two hours north from Mareeba.

“We’d heard about Lakeland – that there was red soil for sale and heaps of it,” Peter remembers.

“It was unbelievable.”

Peter and his family were farming trailblazers in Lakeland.

They purchased 872 acres in the beginning - “of course we didn’t realise how dry it was”.

“We farmed very diligently by planting 24 hours a day when the weather was right,” Peter said.

“Once the rain came we would work day and night.

then we had a few crop disasters due to natural disasters so we lost a crop but still had to store the crates in the packing shed.

“For us it was a major expense having the crates sit in the shed for another 12 months until we got to use them.

“Because lognans need to be gassed for shelf life, cardboard is no good.

“We tried other packing methods using bags but it was double handling.”

Tara found an alternative crate – made from polypropylene using a machine made in China – which allow growers to display their product aesthetically and meet their packaging needs.

She found a business in Mareeba offering crates and purchased it in 2014, renaming it to JAT Plastics.

“It wasn’t economically feasible to keep importing the crates,” Tara said.

“We were not going to make any money so we decided to make our own crates.

“We knew we needed a reliable and cost-effective supply of crates for our own business security but also for the local horticultural industry as well.”

Today, Tara has grown the business from two active cus-

tomers – her family being one of them – to more than 35 growers.

She readily admits her knowledge of machines, robotics and technology was next to nothing when she started. But there was no stopping this pocket rocket, who battled language and cultural barriers to travel to China, training in the use of the machine and developing new moulds.

When she started marketing the product locally, it fell on deaf ears. Growers had experienced quality issues with previous crates and weren’t interested.

Tara persisted, and redesigned the mould to make the crates collapse-proof.

Today, crates are available for a wide range of product lines including longans, lychees, squash, rambutans and beans.

“I think growers are very thankful that there is something like this available,” Tara said.

“They know that their produce now is been recognised in the market.”

Tara retains a hands-on role in the orchard, overseeing the packing each season and looking after the bookwork.

While the challenges of launching a new product in the market have been many and varied, Tara said she was proud to

deliver an innovation that has helped so many growers.

“To see now its a local product and being used so widely and spreading through Australia is quite an achievement,” Tara said.

“I’ve learnt a lot about robotics, and how moulding process works.

“I would never have thought that every single bottle or every piece of plastic comes from one of these machines. I don’t think people understand where this material is made.”

With plans to continue to develop new crates – trials of a single tray mango tray for the export market in China were successful last season – and install a second machine, Tara is using her experience to lobby for major legislative change in the industry.

in really good health,” Peter said.

“It’s paying dividends by boosting production and quality.

Our bananas have good colour all year around and sweet taste, our soil health has improved and it is holding onto more nutrients and water.

“We are now pushing hard to show how it has positive affects on the reef by way of less sediment and nutrient run-off.

“The other exciting thing is we are using 60 per cent less chemical fertilisers and our pro-

duction figures have increased.”

Drawing from the farming success he has enjoyed with access to water, Peter is an avid champion for more reliable and secure water resources for Lakeland.

He takes a front seat in lobbying to open up further land to irrigated agriculture in the region.

“Of all the land available for agriculture in Lakeland, we are only using 10 per cent under irrigation,” Peter said.

Small school with impressive growth

With just 37 students from prep to grade six, St Anthony’s School in Dimbulah provides a balanced approach to learning.

With the release of the recent 2018 NAPLAN results showing a decline in reading and writing across the country, the little Dimbulah education facility punched way above its weight with the school’s year five class recording the best growth among FNQ schools.

School principal Kath Porter said that while our results are pleasing and we congratulate all our students on their improvement we are also mindful to keep things in perspective.

“We don’t focus on NAPLAN, at a school level we focus on each individual student and map their growth,” Ms Porter said.

“Our teachers are fortunate being in a small school with small classes.

“We have the luxury of individualising our teaching, mapping student progress on a regular basis then being able to analyse it to inform our classroom practice.

“Most years due to the size of our school we don’t have enough students sitting the test for our results to be published and last year we didn’t rate at all due to small cohort sizes, but that doesn’t mean we are not getting good results.

“Keeping track of each student on a regular basis and not waiting until end of semester reporting enables us to tailor instruction for our students,” she said.

In a detailed report about educational reform to the Australian Government, David Gonski reiterates what teachers in smaller schools have known for a long time – the restrictive nature of year-level progression is failing

our kids and he therefore recommended mixed-ability classes.

This is the norm in small schools like St Anthony’s.

The little school committed to charting growth every year for every child is always trying new ways to help the school and the local community.

“Over the years the school has grown smaller in student numbers and it is a reflection of the changing trends and job opportunities in the town,” said Ms Porter.

“We are feeling for our families and have taken the step of reducing our school fees to $100 a term for every student ($400 a year per student) to assist them.

“We need more incentives and support for young families to move into our town and experience country living and the benefits of a small school education.” Ms Porter said.

Hearing Bus to visit Mareeba

The Mareeba Men’s Shed will host the Australian Hearing Bus when it comes to town later this month.

On Thursday September 20 locals can hop on board the bus in Mareeba for a free hearing check and expert advice.

This is an excellent opportunity for locals who may suffer from hearing loss due to industrial noise or from any medical condition.

Members of the public who have hearing aids or require a hearing test are urged to attend the free service which will be in the area near the Mareeba Hospital from 9am until 12pm.

Sufferers will be able to talk to a hearing expert and

get advice on what’s best for them, no appointment is necessary just turn up on the day.

Vice President of the Mareeba Men’s Shed John Hartwell said, “Some people don’t know they have a hearing problem until they are tested and this is a great opportunity for them to do so at no cost,” said John.

Mareeba’s hallmark racing event is almost upon us, with the highly anticipated ‘Mareeba Annuals’ set to deliver on and off the track this Saturday, September 15 at the Mareeba Turf Club.

Preparatiions are well and truly on the homestretch in the lead-up to the first country race meet of the Spring racing season, with more than 1,500 racegoers expected to frock up and place their bets at the annual race day.

For the more serious punters, attention will be on the track from 1pm with the five race Thoroughbred program. Featuring the Mareeba Cup and Bracelet and with more than $40,000 in prize money up for grabs across the five races the day attracts the best of the best.

Lessons to be learnt from road review Shane Knuth MP and TRC Councillor Anthony Ball inspect the Millaa Millaa-Malanda Road damage back in July this year.

A review into Millaa MillaaMalanda Road in Far North Queensland has found a variety of factors contributed to recent sealing issues including the makeup of the road surfacing material, atmospheric conditions and traffic management.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said the events that led to multiple vehicles being damaged were unacceptable, and he had given firm instruction to the Department of Transport and Main Roads that it could not happen again.

51 claims had been returned to TMR from people seeking compensation for damage caused by tar on Millaa Millaa-Malanda Road, of these 51 claims, 41 claims were assessed as payable with a further 10 claims being reassessed based on additional information, 112 stone chip claims were submitted, with 97 assessed as payable and 15 denied.

“The report concludes the issue was caused by a number of different factors, including spray seal rates, spray seal mix, aggregate size, variable underlying surface texture and higher levels of moisture,” Mr Bailey said.

“The report also identified that the road was affected in-part due to traffic management during brooming of aggregate that had come loose.

“The department works alongside AAPA and will look at the recommendations from the investigation through its existing

strategic alliance.

“TMR will look closely at the recommendations and learnings from the independent report to determine what additional steps may be needed to ensure this does not happen again.

“Measures may include updating TMR’s specifications, increasing the use of crumb rubber (recycled tyres) in seals and introducing a registration or similar system for contractors.

TMR has been hosting detailed spray sealing workshops across Queensland, and are open to both departmental and external participants.

However Member for Hill Shane Knuth believes the review

by Transport and Main Roads in the wake of the melting road disaster at Tarzali is a ‘farce’ and is ‘not addressing the real issues’.

“Any company that receives a contract should be trained up in the field of road maintenance, what they’re not trained up in is knowing our diverse weather conditions in high altitude wet tropic regions,” Mr Knuth said.

“We keep telling the state government and Department the importance of granting road upgrade tenders to local road maintenance operators.”

Mr Knuth said local contractors have the knowledge required to deal with the region’s unique climate and altitude as ‘in the end the whole community benefits.’

“Residents are sick and tired

of road upgrades that fall to pieces within months and seeing works that should be completed in a number of weeks drag out for months.

“It costs the taxpayer millions more than if the Government just forked out the extra upfront to make sure the job is finished properly the first time.

“The Upper Barron Road is a prime example of how locals do the job properly.

“Tablelands Regional Council tendered locally and we now have a state of the art road constructed by Tablelands contractors that won’t have to be revisited for decades.’

“The whole region gets a boost from the flow on effect of more jobs and income coming into the economy rather than going to interstate companies.” Mr Knuth said.

Mr. Knuth said he has raised the issue with the Minister for a meeting with the council, Main Roads and local road maintenance contractors to explore avenues for locals to receive Government road contracts.

Mr Knuth said he will also be taking any rejections of compensation claims from the Department directly to the Minister.

“Main Roads are ultimately responsible and it’s a kick in the guts for owners to be told they won’t be compensated for damage caused to their vehicles.” Mr Knuth said.

Lake claims its traditional Indigenous name

A Far North Queensland lake believed to house a malicious spirit is now officially known by its Indigenous name – Koongarra.

Member for Cook Cynthia Liu said the gazettal of the name was a milestone for the area’s traditional owners, the Kuku Djungan people.

“Ngarrabullgan, known as Mount Mulligan range, is a sacred place about 90 kilometres west of Mareeba,” she said.

“The Traditional Owners of Ngarrabullgan, the Kuku Djungan people, believe that the mountain and lake are a sacred and dangerous place, inhabited

by the malicious spirit Eekoo and they approach it with caution and rarely camp on its summit.”

Chairperson of the Djungan Peoples body corporate Judulu Neal said Lake Koongarra was a sacred lake within sacred country.

“Lake Koongarra is our own Djungan People's name for this sacred place,” she said.

"Such formal naming of places on Djungan Country feels like an expression of our original sovereignty to our own Djungan Country.

“Now that this name has been gazetted, I would like to continue adding more of our names for our

places onto the Queensland register of place names."

Natural Resources Minister Dr Anthony Lynham said the Kuku Djungan people had requested the lake be named as Lake Koongarra, and received incredible support from the community.

“The traditional name was already recorded on the Queensland Place Names Data Base as an unofficial name, for the Mount Mulligan Range lake was in common use and recognised at a state and national level for its cultural significance,” he said.

Arts in the Park is on again! With something for everyone to enjoy from live music to art activities and more, the annual event is set to excite art lovers from all the across the region.

HUNDREDS of art lovers are expected to converge on Mareeba's Centenary Park to celebrate and express their love of art on Saturday September 22, from 9am till 2pm.

Councillor Mary Graham said there will be something for everyone.

“The day will include local arts and craft market stalls, demonstrations, free activities, displays, entertainment, free face painting and more,” Cr Graham said.

The Voice contestant Clint Posselt will be performing live along with local artist Shannae

Sclippa, acapella group Misty Mountain Moonshiners and ukulele group, Honey and Spice from Kuranda.

The committee has been working with local artists and community groups including the Mareeba Arts Society, FlexiChoice Mareeba, Mareeba PCYC, Kuranda Arts Cooperative, Molloy Artist Group and Arts in Mind from Mareeba.

“The public is invited to contribute to a “community mosaic artwork” which will be created at the event and will become a feature of Centenary Park,” Cr Graham said.

Lead activity facilitator, Caroline Lieber from Molloy Artist Group will be assisted on the day by other members of the Molloy Artist Group and the Mareeba Arts in Mind group.

Community members will create a small mosaic taking inspiration from the leaves, flowers, seeds and bark of trees found in Centenary Park.

Other activities on the day will include mask making and mark makers with the Kuranda Arts Cooperative, chalk art freestyle zone supported by the team at Mareeba Community Centre and an all-ability craft activity

hosted by FlexiChoice Mareeba.

The Mareeba Library and PCYC will also have free craft activities.

There will be many artists demonstrating their skills and experience including a silversmith demonstration, pottery, painting, needlework, woodwork, basketry and Aboriginal art just to name a few.

The event is funded by the Queensland Government's Regional Arts Development Fund and the Mareeba Shire Council.

Water main upgrade on schedule THE critical upgrade to the water main in Byrnes Street, Mareeba is progressing to schedule and on track as planned for completion by the end of the year.

Council said the progress is going very well and thanked the community and business owners for their ongoing cooperation and patience while the critical project is being completed.

Mareeba Shire Council (MSC) commenced the infrastructure

works to replace the CBD’s water main in August this year.

Mayor Tom Gilmore previously said the upgrade would allow for business growth to meet the increasing demand for goods and services in Mareeba.

“The existing pipeline has been in place for many years, and it is imperative that it be replaced as not only is it struggling to meet current demand, but due to the fact it is reaching the end

of its life and may fracture which would cause serious property damage and disruption to businesses in Mareeba’s main street,” he said.

The pipeline being replaced, runs under the footpath of the north-bound lane of Byrnes Street, from Rankin to Lloyd Streets. Contractors are carrying out the work in stages to keep disruption to a minimum.

All Stars Alan Kilpatrick scored to level things up at 1-1, but 2 minutes later Patrick Stevens scored for Green machine putting them back in the lead, and then Ethan Berry-Porter sealed the deal in the 53rd minute for a final score of 3-1 and Green Machine the 2018 Division 2 12 years and Under champions.

Fifty years of motor racing

Legendary former Tableland Competition Car Club drivers Noel and Barry Day are looking forward to the 50th celebrations this weekend.

The Tableland Competition Car Club (TCCC) has been providing dirt track racing opportunities on the Atherton tablelands since 1968. Tepon Raceway, five kilometres south of Herberton, offers a circuit track as well as a speedway oval to its active member base.

The club and its facilities are constantly being upgraded.

A new club house and viewing platform was built in 2012 under the supervision of members and more recently a state of the art safety fence was built to national standards for the safety of spectators and drivers alike. The new

fence will be officially opened this weekend.

The TCCC is unique in the sense that it is not affiliated with any national body, therefore allowing the club to be more flexible. There are no special licences required to drive a motor racing car as the club have strict

guidelines and procedures in place, including the experience level of competitors with a racing program that is fun, safe and affordable.

Opportunities exist for beginners, passionate competitors, and the not-so-serious racers, who just enjoy getting sideways. Drivers are sorted into three grades – C, B and A. Grading decisions take into consideration both car speed and driver skill.

Club President Geoff Schultz said: “The Clubs emphasis has and always will be on safety for both the general public and the drivers,” said Mr Schultz.

“We have come from very humble beginnings in 1968 and the club is still going strong today with about 30 active members.

“A big thank you to the Herberton Lioness club who man the canteen on race day and use that as fundraisers for their club and also RCG Civil group who come and grade the track when needed and of course the motoring community who do give us great support.” Mr Schultz said.

TCCC meets every third week of each month from March to October at Tepon Raceway Herberton – see you there this weekend for the big 50 years of racing celebrations.

Where it all began AS the Tableland Competition Car Club (TCCC) gears up for its 50th anniversary celebrations this weekend, September 15 and 16, we take a look back at where it all began...

After a group of locals attended a race meeting in Mt Isa in 1968 the TCCC was formed. They wanted the track to be in Herberton, but the chairman of the local council at the time did not like the idea of young men hooning about the town in fast cars.

They did have a better reception from the Atherton Shire council whose Chairman allowed them to use the

internal section at Morrow Park race course at Tolga as their track.

After a successful four years at Morrow Park and a change in Chairman, the Herberton Shire Council allowed the TCCC to develop the Tepon Raceway track on the site of the Old Flaggy Creek racecourse.

With the demise of the horse racing club, the facility was then used exclusively for motor racing from 1972.

The rest as they say is history with the TCCC having a strong membership base and to this day continues to entertain lovers of motor sport in the region.

while being active and enjoying all the Lakes have to offer.

Organisers are hoping for more than 100 competitors, who will be able to run or walk in 5km’s men’s, women’s and junior division with the 1km dash.

The fun run and walk will

kick off from the Lakes at the clearing just behind Mareeba Swimming Pool before going on a cross-country adventure.

Learn to swim for free Local swim school – Swim School Atherton – has got behind national ‘Learn2Swim’ Week and is offering free swimming lessons for local children under five, in a bid to kerb childhood drowning.

John O’Brien, founder and CEO of Poolwerx, the company behind the weeklong event, said the response from local swim schools had been fantastic and he was urging parents to take advantage of the free swimming lessons for their under-fives.

“Last year there were tragically 29 drowning deaths in children aged 0-4 years, with three quarters of these deaths resulting from a fall into the water.

“That is why it is so important to familiarize kids with water at an early age and swimming lessons can provide under-fives with the lifesaving skills they need to know to get themselves out of trouble.”

Mr O’Brien said Learn2Swim Week was helping to get the message across to parents that children can begin water familiarisation lessons from as early as 4-6 months of age and that by 18

months of age, children who have attended regular swimming lessons have the skills they need to get themselves safely back to the side of the pool.

“Our survey of parents who participated in Learn2Swim Week last year showed that 60% went on to enroll their under-fives in regular swimming lessons.

“The free swimming lessons our local swim schools are providing during Learn2Swim Week give parents the opportunity to get their under-fives familiar with water and see firsthand the benefits of teaching them lifesaving water skills.”

“Learn2Swim Week has been running for four years now and each year we get more and more swim schools participating,” Laurie said.

“Local swim schools like Swim School Atherton are helping us to reach our goal of zero drownings in underfives and I encourage all parents with children under five to take advantage of this fantastic opportunity.”

Learn2Swim week and the free swimming lessons will run from October 2 to 9 this year.

COLORADO CLEARANCE Bulls finals approaching fast The Mareeba Bulls premier men’s were unable to give their home supporters a final farewell win for the 2018 season in their last regular season home game on Saturday night. But the Bulls reserves enjoyed a 2-1 win, the youth grinded out a 3-3 draw and the premier ladies sent shock waves through the competition, knocking off the previously undefeated Edge Hill Tigers 2-1.

All four sides went into the weekend knowing the results counted for little with finals spots already safely tucked away, but the reserves, youth and ladies all wanted to take some strong momentum in the finals. The la-

dies put the icing on the cake, in front of one of the largest home crowds for the ladies fixture. The ladies lifted and after a 1-1 first half with the Tigers looking every inch their premiership winning selves, but in the second period it was the Bulls who came out and bossed the Tigers around the park and a 70th minute Jeannae Kalinau goal gave the homeside a 2-1 lead and they never looked back.

The sides will be looking for strong performance this weekend in the last regular season game away to the Innisfail Cutters.

Also on Saturday at Endeavour Park Cairns, the clubs juniors took part in the preliminary semi

finals, with four grades hitting the pitch to book a spot in the Grand Final.

With the clubs all conquering U13/14 all girls team already waiting in the Grand final, the clubs U13/14 Division one and Division two sides battled it out along with the clubs U15/16 Division one and Division two sides. After some tense semi final football, the U13/14 sides both made it through to the final, while both of the UJ15/16 sides bowed out.

The match of the day was the 5-4 win by the 13/14 Division one team. Claiming a 5-4 win over the Edge Hill Tigers. Go-

ing down 1-0 early, they rallied to go 3-1 up at halftime, only for the Tigers to claw back to 3-3 and with their backs against the wall, the young Bulls found something and hit the lead again going ahead 5-3. The Tigers then got one back with only minutes remaining to make it 5-4 in a thrilling encounter.

This Saturday at Endeavour Park is the FNQ Football Grand Finals, where the clubs U13/14 all girls team, division one team and division two team will be playing. In a great year for the clubs juniors, five out of the six competitive age brackets made the semi finals.

Roosters bow out after top season

The Atherton Roosters dream of pulling off the 2018 premiership in their 100th year ended in Sunday’s Cairns District Rugby League elimination final with a 36-18 loss to Tully at Barlow Park on Sunday night.

It was always going to be a tough contest for the Roosters who lost four players through injury in the first 30 minutes.

James Clark(knee), Willem Foster (hamstring), Adam Molloy (knee) and Caleb Foster (knee) were all sidelined and out of the contest ten minutes before the break which left the Roosters without a bench for the remaining fifty minutes.

Tully led 20-6 at halftime and had extended that lead to 28-6 at the 60th minute. But to their credit the Roosters never

stopped trying and two quick tries through Nathan Curcio and Reece Munster put them back in the game 28-18 with ten minutes remaining.

A couple of errors from the Roosters allowed their opposition another try four minutes from the final siren which wrapped up Tully’s night and they now move on to play a another knockout final against Brothers this Sunday.

The winner will play in the grand final against Mossman who are the first team into the September 22 decider after defeating Brothers 35-28 on Sunday. Atherton’s under 19 side also bowed out of the premiership race after going down 26-12 to Kangaroos on Sunday.

The Mareeba Gladiators reserves were dealt a blow on Sunday in the major semi as they went down to the minor premiers Yarrabah Seahawk.

The Mareeba outfit seemed to have the measure of the Seahawks as they went 12 points clear in the first 10 minutes of the match, but by the half time break the Seahawks had clawed their way back to level at 18-18 in a very evenly matched game.

The second half saw the Seahawks the hungrier of the two sides and outscored the Gators by five tries to two to seal out the

match 40-30.

However all is not lost, the Gators do have another crack at it this weekend.

While Southern Suburbs put an end to the Mossman Port Douglas Shark’s season by winning 42-24, the gators will have a case of deja vu as they do it all over again against the team they toppled the previous week.

Gladiator fans are bound to make the trip down the hill in droves as the club vies for a grand final spot. The match will kicks off at Barlow Park at 1.30pm this Sunday.
