EDERAL Member for Leichhardt Warren Entsch has offered some logic regarding the current ‘backpacker tax’ debate in federal parliament. Under the proposed changes, backpackers who come to Australia on a working holiday visa would be required to pay 32 per cent of every dollar they earn in tax. Mr Entsch – along with several other MP’s throughout the chamber – have raised concerns
that such a move could seriously impact tourism in Northern Australia. “When we first started talking about the ‘backpacker tax’, I had some reservations but I understood the arguments behind it and what we were trying to achieve,” he said. “Since then, I’ve spoken to people like Joe Moro from the Mareeba District Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association, as well as individual farmers, a number of operators in the tourism industry and the Restaurant and Caterers Association.
“In their view, the tax is going to be a real disincentive to young people coming here for a working holiday and will diminish the available workforce in Northern Australia.” Mr Entsch believes that backpackers deserve a decent tax rate – and direct payment of superannuation to the employee could achieve this. “Why don’t we look at some way in which the nine per cent superannuation can be paid out directly to the employee as part of their salary, to significantly reduce the tax impost,” he said. “Instead of backpackers paying tax at the rate
of 32 per cent from the first dollar they earn, which is what is proposed, we could reduce that to say 27 per cent – which is more reasonable. “The employer would then pay the employee their superannuation directly, which would essentially drop their tax rate to 18 per cent. “This way, backpackers are still contributing from the first dollar they earn, but it brings the tax down to an acceptable level. It’s less complicated for the employer as they have to pay superannuation.” CONTINUED PAGE 3

William Snell is one of Queensland’s brightest minds in his age cohort.
Snell recognised for academic excellence FORMER St Stephen’s Catholic College star pupil William Snell has been recognised for sustained academic excellence. Snell – who received an OP 1 and College 2015 Dux – was one of 37 students acknowledged at the Queensland Certificate of Education awards. Across Qld, 600 students received the coveted mantle of an OP 1. Of those students, William was selected for additional recognition. A keen enthusiast of aeronautical engineering, William will study at the University of Qld’s St Lucia campus in Brisbane. SSCC Principal Ida Pinese said: “(It) was a well-deserved accolade for this brilliant, inspiring, yet unpretentious young man. “The entire St Stephen’s community is proud of William and wish him the very best in the next phase of his educational journey.” State education minister Kate Jones said it was wonderful to see so many students across the state achieving highly. “In schools it’s important to have a benchmark of excellence,” she said. “I recognise the hard work and dedication of teachers who supported these students to achieve their learning goals. “We see students from state, catholic and independent schools throughout Queensland represented in our top academic achievers for 2015.”

Lene and Leksi Mukadi (in the red dresses) have been busy fundraising for their trip.
Community rallies for Lene and Leksi By Justin Fris INSEPERABLE sisters Lene anid Leksi Mukadi have been eagerly fundraising in a bid to help their dreams come true. The girls have been selected to participate in the ‘Faces of the Globe’ international beauty pageant, which will be held in both London and Disneyland Paris between April 2-9. Naturally, such a trip requires a major fundraising component – and the girls have been eagerly out in the community giving it their best. Recently, the Mukadi family held a special car wash event at Beaurepaires Mareeba, where they were able to raise $250. Social media also plays a significant component of the competition, with a dedicated ‘people’s choice’ component. In essence, the entrant with the highest number of ‘likes’ is declared the winner of that sec-
tion. The girls’ mother Tricia said: “The girls’ public choice voting is now live. Our girls are grossly lagging as we don’t have as many social media followings as entrants in major cities. “Let’s throw up as much support and likes as possible – it is possible to show there is a voice from the bush. “These bush girls can do Australia proud and perhaps put Mareeba on the global stage.” In order to help Lene and Leksi, readers are encouraged to visit: www.facebook.com/Face-of-theGlobe-Australian-Finalists-Lene-Leksi and follow the provided instructions. Mrs Mukadi added: “The girls will truly appreciate all the support and likes from the community. Please share with all of your Facebook friends from all over the country, as they are representing Australia.”

Medical cannabis legislation passed By Justin Fris FEDERAL Member for Leichhardt Warren Entsch’s push to offer long-term pain relief for cancer and communicable disease patients has successfully passed through federal parliament. The Liberal MP’s inspired Bill to legalise medical cannabis was successfully passed through the Federal House of Representatives last Tuesday night, before clearing the Senate two days later. A Liberal Party spokeswoman confirmed the following: “Once the Bill receives Royal Assent from the Governor General, the Department of Health has allowed 6-8 months to establish the licensing scheme. “In the meantime, in preparation for when the scheme is up and running, states and territories can apply for an authority to cultivate. “This will allow Victoria in particular to keep moving forward. Backpackers could get charged a whopping 32 per cent tax under new guidelines – a figure that Warren Entsch says will ruin tourism in the Far North.
From Page 1 “THEY pay anyway - so you could just pay it direct to the employee and the backpackers themselves would spend more of their earnings in (our) country. “It’s just a proposal, but there was very strong support in the Party Room and I was heartened by the fact that the Treasurer has now agreed to review the ‘backpacker tax’ and to have further discussions.” Mareeba District Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association president Joe Moro said that backpackers were of great support to many lo-
the case with the poppy industry in Tasmania. “Finer details such as the strain of cannabis to be grown, how it will be processed and where, will all be worked out during the establishment phase.” Having conversed with several battling serious illness, Mr Entsch said the legislation would be welcomed by many who deal with chronic levels of pain. “It’s a very significant day when medical cannabis is acknowledged as being a product that makes a real difference to people suffering from chronic conditions or terminal disease,” Mr Entsch told parliament in a speech last Wednesday night. “It will mean that patients and their family members will no longer have to hide in the shadows to source cannabis off the street. They will have a pathway to access safe and effective product and to access that product legally.”
cal growers in the region. “It’s important to get the right rate (tax rate) for the backpacker as close to what the Australian they are working alongside is,” he said. “Many of the backpackers who work for local growers are generally sociable and have a bit of a different outlook as they are on a special experience and journey. “The more money the backpacker has in the back of their pocket, the more they will spend and help strengthen the Australian economy.” Mr Moro added that many local industry stakeholders had held discussions with backpackers, to gain their insight into what the pro-
posed changes could mean for their future. “The feedback that we are getting from the backpackers indicates that it would more than likely impact the duration of their stay in Australia,” he said. “In other cases, it may cause them to skip Australia all together. Australia is a high cost country, so the backpacker has to be strategic in what they want to do.” Mr Moro said that stakeholders were ‘heartened a lot’ by the Coalition’s support on the matter and hoped that a desirable outcome for all concerned could be reached in the not too distant future.

Straight-shooting senators take aim at federal senate BOTH the major political parties (ALP and LNP) appear intent on reducing the input of minor political parties within the federal Senate. Australia currently accommodates a myriad of straight shooting senators right now (Jacqui Lambie, Nick Xenophon, Ricky Muir) – however, their effectiveness may be stymied in coming months. Katter’s Australia Party leader Bob Katter believes current debate surrounding the Commonwealth Electoral Amendment Bill 2016 is all an
attempt for the ALP and Coalition to gain absolute power. “Everyone knows the major parties are controlled by the party machine, which is controlled by the major corporations,” Mr Katter said. “The majority of the money coming into the ALP comes from big corporations, and that is even more true of the Liberal Party and their lapdogs - the National Party. “But what you’re watching here is the muzzling of the people.
“We are nearly the only country on earth that has the two-party system – but over 10 per cent of the population do not want to vote for the mainstream parties; they are disenfranchised.” Mr Katter added: “I think people like Dio Wang, John Madigan, Glenn Lazarus, Ricky Muir and Jacqui Lambie are outstanding examples of independents and small parties who make a very valuable contribution. “They vote, in my opinion, infinitely more intelligently than those in the mainstream major
parties who have destroyed our economy with their fanatical free-marketism. “They represent the people, the rest represent the ALP and LNP corporations. “But they depend upon that 10 per cent of the vote to get elected and it will now be removed – so over the next 10 years they too will be removed. “And we will just have the two major parties and their lapdogs left – the Greens and the Nick Xenophon.”
Cooling off for Polio COMMUNITY members and Rotarians came together last Sunday at the Mareeba Swimming Pool to participate in the ‘Rotary Global Swimarathon’ event. The annual event saw children and adults of all ages swim for one hour to raise funds for ‘End Polio Now’. The Mareeba event raised $1,515 which will go to End Polio Now. Disabled swimmer Angie Ericson raised $100 on her own, after completing the one hour swim, which was donated to her by June Cotter of Cotter’s Aquatics. It was a massive achievement for Angie and her mum Marie could not be more proud when she finished. The annual event is part of a world-wide rotary initiative and is held each year in February to coincide with the birthday of Rotary International. In the last three years including the Gates Foundation 2:1 matching, more than $700,000 has been raised for End Polio Now – enough to fund more than 1.3 million vaccines. For more photos turn to page 25.

Youth shine at quest The ‘lions Youth of the Year’ quest is a project of Lions International, designed to encourage students interest in leadership and the qualities required to take an active and constructive role in the community. Last Saturday night, the Mareeba Lions Club conducted the District 201 Q2 component of the quest at the Mareeba RSL. Judges Peter Apel, Nina Akselsen Grant, and Brendan Ebner found it difficult to separate students from both Mareeba State High and St Stephen’s Catholic College, such was the standard of all the students. Judges spent time interviewing the students earlier in the day on leadership, personality, general knowledge, academic excellence, cultural and community interests. The public speaking aspect of the quest was performed in front of Lions members, parents, teachers and guests, with students being asked two impromptu questions before delivering a prepared speech on a personal subject matter. Kate Wilcox, School Captain at St Stephens Catholic College, was declared the overall winner of the quest and will progress to the zone judging. Should Kate be successful at the zone finals, she will progress to the Regional’s, District, State and National finals. Judges found it difficult not to award the public speaking section of the competition to Mateen Latif, a Year 11 student at Mareeba State High.

Katter speaks up over Chinese investment THE Turnbull Government approved a $280m purchase of Tasmania’s largest dairy farm by a Chinese investment group last Tuesday. In yet another hammer blow for Australian asset ownership, the 17,800 ha facility is regarded as one of the finest of its kind. Federal Member for Kennedy Bob Katter was a lone voice in federal parliament last week – lamenting more and more Australian assets falling into foreign ownership. “No one in North Queensland is anti-China or antiChinese – probably a quarter of the population have Chinese gold rushers somewhere in the family tree. “But China is a country with enough money to buy out the whole of Australia. And once your country is owned by somebody else, you get no benefit. “What we’re looking at is vertical integration – it starts at the farm and goes right through to the end consumer. “The farm equipment will come from China, what few workers there are will be mostly from China, the profits will be price transferred off shore meaning negligible tax paid in Australia. “Australians will play no part and I do not know at what point Australia benefits.” One wonders if the purchase will see the owners fly in Chinese workers to operate the facility – operating under Chinese employment pay and conditions. Mr Katter added: “The Federal Government Inquiry in 2006 showed that 11% of Australia was foreign owned. “And that sounds like no problem – but 52% of Australia’s surface area is on the world register of deserts, over 20% is in some sort of national park like arrangement for our First Australians, and 7% is national parks. “So of the remaining 21% of Australia’s surface area – 11% was foreign owned.”

$60,000 boost for MSS By Justin Fris UNRIVALLED passion and support from committed volunteers has resulted in Mareeba State School students receiving a fantastic opportunity. Through the support of the Mareeba SS P and C over several years, $60,000 was raised in a bid to provide a quality learning environment for the students. As a result, new infrastructure means that wireless technology (for example, internet) can now be accessed throughout all school
buildings. Instead of walking to the library for a lesson in the computer room, teachers can now facilitate technology-based components in the classroom. MSS Principal Mandy Whybird said the new additions would be warmly received across the school community. “It’s going to be very engaging for our students,” she said. “Additionally, it will be of great benefit for students in our enrichment extension programs.” Students will be able to use I-Pad devices

Member for Cook Billy Gordon absent from Parliament due to illness THE independent Member for Cook Billy Gordon has been released from hospital, after recently having a minor heart attack. After recognising chest pain and feeling unwell, Mr Gordon promptly visited his GP and received appropriate care in hospital. “The doctors and staff have been providing me with world-class medical attention and care since when I was admitted on February 20. I can’t thank them enough,” he said. “I felt some tense feeling around the chest area on February 19, and my breathing was unusually difficult. I didn’t think too much of it, assuming it was just workrelated stress and tiredness. We did have
some very hot days in Queensland.” Mr Gordon added: “I trust that, whilst I am in a medical recovery phase, and will be absent from Parliament this week, the Westminster-democratic convention will prevail and that the Opposition LNP will refrain from moving a vote-of-no-confidence on the Government. “To provoke such an act would mock Parliamentary convention, and be ridiculed by the Queensland electorates. Such a callous initiative would also be lacking any empathy and would never get my support. I want to thank my colleagues, friends and family for all your well-wishes, thoughts and prayers. I ask the media to respect my privacy.”

Supporting the local community The Express inspected a large parcel of land on the edge of the Tolga Industrial Estate, which has been earmarked as Stage 1 for the project. Mr Trimarchi said he was hopeful that the facility could provide benefits to not only ill patients, but provide additional long-term benefits to the local community. “It’s very stressful for very sick people to travel unnecessarily,” Mr Trimarchi said. “Although this is a national program, we would like to see a local focus – on cultivation delivery and trial facilities.” He added: “We have put an immense effort into placing the Atherton Tablelands as the first place in Qld to successfully receive the government approvals. “The greatest achievement we can possibly achieve is that of improving the lives of very sick Queenslanders and Tablelanders, by providing our own medicinal cannabis-based products from locally authorised providers. “What a wonderful thing that’d be as a life achievement.” Mr Garozzo added that he was excited about the opportunity for local employment opportunities, along with the potential for universities to base tailored faculties and subjects at the property.

TWO long-term friends (a local farmer and rural dcvelopment consultant, pictured) have put up their hands to assist with the cultivation of medical cannabis. Shane Garozzo and Joe Trimarchi (owner of local agricultural company TRIMPEX) are just some of the many individuals keen to assist terminally ill patients, by providing a facility to grow and research medicinal cannabis. Medical cannabis legislation was successfully passed through both houses of federal parliament last week. Once the Bill passes specific protocol from the Governor General, the federal Department of Health has a timeframe of 6-8 months to establish imperative licensing conditions. Prior to the implementation of the scheme, individual states and territories have an opportunity to apply for cultivation authority licences. Both Mr Garozzo and Mr Trimarchi have had discussions with all forms of government on the matter and will meet with Palaszczuk Government ministers in coming weeks. Both men said they had received positive support from all discussions and were hopeful that a positive outcome could be reached for all concerned.
SUE FAIRLEY (Barrine): “‘When I met Rod Marti 10 years ago, I found him a clever, astute businessman. As a Councillor, he’s displayed strong characteristics, particularly honesty, integrity and capability. I’ve been impressed with his prompt manner in dealing with issues. Rod isn’t frightened to stand up for the ideals he believes are important for his constituents.” GUIDO POGGIOLI (Shead Road): “Rod demonstrates a great ability to quickly understand issues and deliver practical commonsense outcomes. His experience as a farmer, businessman and in local government make him an ideal candidate for mayor of the Tablelands Regional Council. I have no hesitation in endorsing his nomination.” JOhn REYnOLDS (Millaa Millaa): “I am supporting Rod Marti for Mayor and applaud the fact that he is an independent candidate.”

Further tabled documents FURTHER information in regard to a recently tabled report to state parliament was added last week in Brisbane. The report – formally tabled by the Member for Cairns Rob Pyne – surrounds alleged misconduct allegations involving representatives from both the Lockyer Valley Regional Council and Tablelands Regional Council. Mr Pyne has reaffirmed his commitment to the cause. A day after the report was released (February 19), authorities and ratepayers across the state were aghast to learn that the LVRC Mayor Steve Jones had died of a stroke during a morning meeting. Condolences to Mr Jones’s family and friends were plentiful across all three tiers of government.
THE BIG MAREEBA RODEO BULL CHARIOT RACES
The bull chariot races at the Rodeo began in 1957 when Bill Hunter was President of the Mareeba Rodeo Committee. Bill was also the proprietor of an engineering works in Mareeba which traded under the name of “Mareeba Maid”. Bill made four “chariots”, each with a clever arm system to attach to a bull. At the time of the race, each bull would be placed in a bucking shute and the arm of the competitor manned chariot would go over the gate and would be attached to a type of saddle. The idea was that when the race started all the gates would open at the same time, the bulls would come out and gallop across the arena, pulling the chariot with it’s rider to the finish line.
Unfortunately, the bulls were more interested in “mixing it” with each other and the race turned into a bit of a melee. Bullocks were then substituted for the bulls and these were found to be somewhat more manageable. Major sponsors were encouraged to place their names on the sides of the chariots. This information comes from Mr Bill Fossett who served for many years on the Rodeo Committee as Secretary and Senior Vice President.

Atherton to get botanical garden SOME months ago, a small committee (under the auspice of the Atherton Lions Club), convened with the aim of establishing a botanical garden and park in Atherton. Various areas were looked at and considered for their location, suitability and availability. After talks with the Tablelands Regional Council (and inspecting a number of sites), the committee decided that a suitable area for a botanical garden would be the old railway site between IGA and the old railway station (now the Atherton Men’s shed). This proposed area also includes sections of Prior Creek and its embankments. The committee contacted the Department of Natural Resources and Mines to determine if the proposed gardens would be compatible with limited clearing of ar-
eas alongside the creek. The Department agreed – with caveats on removing large shrubs and trees – and the prohibition of non native species. The initial plan for the area includes a pedestrian bridge across the creek from near IGA to a small council park on the opposite bank. This bridge would give residents, including those in motorised wheelchairs, a handy access to the business area of town. The committee thought that this location also offered a convenient site for visitors to the town; and for local residents to relax and enjoy a restful park. There are proposals for the Information Centre to be located in the area, as well a sound shell for concerts. Additionally, there is the possibility
of a weir across the creek, which would form a small lake. There have been a number of ideas, which will be evaluated for the suitability for the Parks and Gardens. The longer term strategy to acquire and develop this area is to consult with the wider community to establish what there is to build a park and garden – along with the sort of facilities that may be incorporated in the design. To this end, the committee will draw up a plan of the area and include some basic features and parameters of gardens, lawns, pathways, trees and shrubs. This plan will then be submitted to the public at a community meeting to invite comments and suggestions.
The committee would also like to expand the present committee membership, by bringing in interested members of the Tablelands community – along with representatives of schools, service clubs and other community groups. It is envisaged that this expanded committee will coordinate the planning, development, and possibly the maintenance of the park; also liaising with the TRC, as they in the end will have the final say on what will be done in the area. For further enquiries, interested individuals and groups may wish to contact the present committee: Terry Clark (Chairman – 0417 642 049), Sam Valestra (Main St. Barber Shop) or Paddy Forsayeth (Secretary – 0427 375 000).

Knuth continues to fight for the Far North By Justin Fris MEMBER for Dalrymple Shane Knuth has maintained his unrivalled pursuit for northern development in Brisbane this week. Along with fellow KAP crossbencher Robbie Katter, the duo have asked that several considerations be met in the future creation of vegetation management legislation. Staunchly proud of the Far North, Mr Knuth said that previous legislation (Vegetation Management Framework) is primarily focused on South East Qld. “The North of Queensland is significantly underdeveloped and needs the chance to push forward, especially the agricultural sector,” Mr Knuth said. “The Vegetation Management Framework, that was in place prior to 2012, may have been appropriate for areas in Southern Queensland, but have denied opportunity to parts of North and Western Queensland. “These areas have had centuries of development, while the North is only just blossoming.” The considerations put forward by the KAP crossbenchers are as follows: Rejecting a ‘one-size fits all’ approach to vegetation management on a state-wide basis

that denies opportunity to parts of North and Western Queensland. These regions being Einasleigh Uplands, Gulf Plains, Cape York, Desert Uplands, North-west Highlands, Mulga Lands, Mitchell grass downs and Channel Country. b) Properties with the total cleared area of land of less than 10 per cent be permitted to be cleared up to a maximum of 10 per cent, capped at 5,000 ha. c) Maintaining current self-assessable codes on these properties; to ensure opportunity and maintenance of current productivity levels in balance with landscape vegetation re-
tention and connectivity. d) Clearing provisions for high-value and irrigated high value Agriculture be extended to include ‘high-value’ land for grazing purposes such as baled fodder and forage, ensiling and strip grazing. e) That any proposed changes do not impact on previously approved development under the present Vegetation Management Framework. The Palaszczuk Government had planned to scrap the current vegetation management laws, however the Bill was successfully passed with amendments from the LNP.

Skilling Queenslanders for work supporting Cook jobseekers Communities in Cook will have access to training opportunities that boost their job prospects, thanks to the second round of funding from the Palaszczuk Government’s ‘Skilling Queenslanders for Work’ program. Training and Skills Minister Yvette D’Ath said 35 people from the local area will be supported into training pathways, through a total of $122,500 granted to two community-based not-for-profit organisations in round two of the scheme. Mrs D’Ath said the funding windfall will support job seekers to boost their skill set with quality training opportunities and improve their employment prospects. “I am delighted to announce this funding on
behalf of local groups and job seekers who live in Far North Queensland,” Mrs D’Ath said. “The Palaszczuk Government reinstated this vital initiative last year after it was axed by the former LNP government. “I am pleased that the people of the Cook electorate will share in this vital funding windfall to support disadvantaged job seekers to improve their skills and find pathways to full-time work. “This fantastic scheme puts communities in partnership with government to grow local employment opportunities, encourage greater social inclusion and assist people who need extra support to enter the workforce.
“This is all about giving people the right skills and getting them into jobs.” Recipients of funding in the Cook electorate in round two of Skilling Queenslanders for Work are: Community Enterprises Australia Limited at Thursday Island will assist 15 people to deliver “Growing Our Own” – a Maritime Employment Initiative (Cert II in Maritime Operations) $59,900. Douglas Shire Community Services Assoc Inc at Mossman will assist 20 people to deliver the “Building Capacity” program (Cert III in Disability) $62,600 Mrs D’Ath said more than 5900 people across Queensland would be supported by
more than $30 million injected into community groups in round two to fund skill development, training and job opportunities for unemployed, disengaged or disadvantaged people. She said Work Start incentives offer a one-off financial incentive of $2000 to private sector employers if they employ a Queenslander who has participated in a SQW project in a traineeship or apprenticeship. Mrs D’Ath said the next SQW funding round is open for applications. Interested organisations are encouraged to visit www.training.qld. gov.au/sqw for further information or contact their local DET regional office. Applications will close on 7 April 2016.
NAIF debate rages on STATE MP’s have lobbied hard for the federal government-based ‘Northern Australia Infastructure Fund’ office to be based in North Queensland. Shockwaves eventuated early last week, after Premier Palaszczuk (pictured) initially remarked that the NAIF office should be located in Brisbane. The ALP was quick to distance themselves from Premier Palaszczuk’s remark; who later clarified her position on the matter. LNP Shadow Minister for Northern Development Andrew Cripps said the only logical location for the office was in North Qld. “We heard a lot of excuses and tall stories during the debate tonight, but Premier Palaszczuk has now fallen into line behind the LNP to support the NAIF being established in North Queensland, where it should be,” Mr Cripps said. “I’m still shocked and appalled that the Premier’s first instinct, when presented with a perfect opportunity to support North Queensland, was to advocate for Brisbane, which is a sad reflection on the
Palaszczuk Labor Government.” Much has been made in the mainstream media about both KAP crossbenchers supposably ‘going missing’ during the ‘vote’ (along with criticism from Mr Cripps) – without actually seeking direct comment from both men as to why they were not present during the announcement. Member for Dalrymple (and KAP crossbencher) Shane Knuth told The Express there was a simple reason for their non attendance at the announcment. “There was no need for a vote,” he said. “The House had already agreed on the motion, therefore no vote was required and we were not required to be attendance during that particular moment. “If the best that the Member for Hinchinbrook (Mr Cripps) can do is to try and ‘catch out’ the KAP, he is better to let someone else come in who is focused on delivering outcomes for regional Qld. “Just like we (both KAP crossbenchers) did to help get our private members sugar Bill across the line, along with securing more funding for rural and regional funding across Qld.”

Cr Linwood responds to criticism In response to the editorial in a local Murdoch publication (February 23) accusing me of a 'cheap stunt' in relation to a motion I tried to raise at the Council meeting on February 18, perhaps the writer should also have a little consideration for the welfare of the complainants involved, as well as his concern for a particular candidate's political future. To claim the accusations were 'unproven' is quite incorrect too. The TRC press statement issued on February 19 from the CEO regarding the allegations tabled to the Queensland Parliament the previous day indicated clearly that there were complaints which were substantiated. Strangely that portion of the press statement didn't make it into the Murdoch publication editorial – although both sides of the argument were included within The Express’s article. As for the reporting on my call for a briefing on the official complaints made against Councillor Hodge by staff, being an 'all out assault', and the Mayor's claim that Cr Pagani and I were making personal reflections and trying to put Cr Hodge down, we at no time made allegations against Cr Hodge. I simply asked council to agree to my being able to raise a motion asking for a briefing from the CEO in relation to the complaints and allegations that had been lodged with State Parliament that day by MP Rob Pyne.
Councillor Hodge, despite his bluster, could not deny that he had been the subject of official complaints (and he abusively blamed me for the issue being raised). It's a shame the reporter did not mention that the Mayor was asked to reprimand him for this, but she failed to take any steps. Significantly, Cr Hodge's statement to the effect he knew nothing about the complaints was not questioned by the reporter – a check with the CEO would have revealed Cr Hodge was given a copy of the complaints late last year when the legal firm appointed by TRC began their investigations. The fact that neither Cr Hodge nor the Mayor declared a conflict of interest at the meeting and did not abstain from the vote, even though they were both named in the parliamentary papers was bad enough; but for the Mayor to use her casting vote to support Cr Hodge to block a motion that involved him is further indictment of the power bloc that has operated throughout this term of the TRC. I refer the public to the tabled papers on the parliamentary online link: http://www.parliament.qld.gov.au/work-of-assembly/tabled-papers/online-tabled-papers ref item 188, and leave them to make their own judgement. Cr Shaaron Linwood, Herberton

We’ve all seen the bumper stickers and Facebook posts affirming that ‘every family needs a farmer’ and this couldn’t be more true for the Tablelands region. Agricultural industries injected more than $404 million into both the Tablelands and Mareeba Shire economies during 2010/11 and early indications of 2015 figures show growth across the sector. Furthermore, Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing accounts for more than 30 per cent of registered business and is the largest sector employer, providing more than 2,000 jobs in the TRC (2013/14). We rely on having a strong and successful agriculture sector. So as a potential future councillor, it’s clear to me that we have to support this sector by getting the basics right. Maintenance of major transport routes, waste management and fair rates are all essential elements of this. We also can’t afford to be ignorant of the big issues - like the proposed ‘backpacker tax’. This is a tax on rural Australia. It’s a short-sighted, ill-conceived scheme to boost the central tax system and pillage the regions. Our region, like others, relies heavily on backpackers for workers and tourism. There’s no shadow of a doubt that this tax would have a severe impact on our farmers, as well as our tourism and retail operators, plus every other business that benefits from us having strong agricultural and tourism sectors. As a councillor, I will make it my business to work with local famers and industry bodies (like Growcom, National Farmers Federation and AusVeg) as well as local operators and organisations like Tropical Tablelands Tourism, Tablelands Futures and the Chambers, to intensify pressure on the Australian Government to properly engage with local community leaders, farmers and rural tourism operators, and ensure that regional economies like ours, have the safe and prosperous future they richly deserve. The slogan: ‘every farmer needs a backpacker’ might not quite take-off, but it’s certainly front of mind for farming residents and small business owners in the Tablelands and Division 6. Bronwyn Voyce, Tolga – Farmer & Division 6 Candidate for Tablelands Regional Council
Dusty streets and houses Walkamin is a small town or village, there is no disputing that. The ‘township’ itself boasts a phenomenal 3.5 km of ‘streets’ – this is just in the town. Of that 3.5 km, about 800 meters remains unsealed.
The unsealed streets which, in total, measure approximately 800 meters are Coral Street (on the southern boundary of the town), the majority of Casuarina Street (on the eastern boundary of town) and Kurrajong Street which is on the southern side of the block where the school is situated. For much of the year, our prevailing breeze or wind is south easterly or easterly, which means that the dust from the unsealed streets is carried across ‘town’ and the kids at school are particularly lucky, beause they get a double dose. Most of the locals are cognizant and considerate of this and reduce speed accordingly when using the unsealed streets; but still, unless you are prepared to keep the house shut up like Fort Knox, the dust permeates everything and is at times choking. However Council vehicles often speed along these streets sending up great billows of dust with little regard for us who have to deal with it – and when the slashing is happening, leave town. The other issue for consideration is that Walkamin is in a ‘rain shadow’ which runs roughly from the ‘jump-up’ to Rocky Creek, which obviously exacerbates the dust issue. Since December 1 2015 to date, we have recorded a total of 306mm, but I’m sure that a lot of the rest of TRC’s coverage area has recorded much more. My present in the mail yesterday was our rates notice – oh joy. The discounted rate is $929.20, while the same period last year was $786 – I calculate that as an increase of some 18 per cent; and if don’t get to pay it before March 24, it’s almost $1000 for the half year. Come on TRC - what the hell are you doing with our dollars? Friends who live in MSC area have large acreage with bitumen frontage, backing onto a river and their rates bill was less than $1400. Lindsey Cullington, Walkamin
The APA has gone backwards a response to the posturing and the self congratulations of the people and TRC councillors of the victory over the Silo Road Shopping Centre complex in the APA Saga. The pioneers of the Tablelands showed great forsight, intestinal fortitude, and capital risk (money) to build the original silos. The developers of the present Silo Road shopping complex have shown the same forsight and vision to help our Tablelands to prosper in retail shopping. Also helping people escape the Coles-Woolworths retail food domination. What a crying shame that the proponents and the voting block of Cr Peter Hodge, Cr Geoff Stocker and Mayor Lee Long (and the casting vote) supported the APA in the tall poppy syndrome Silo complex saga. Their short sightedness and tunnel vision has robbed the APA of a great opportunity to progress to a new modern multi - purpose building. With council land available, a sizeable donation from Silo Complex, council and government subsidies, (plus a generous $100 from 2,000 signatory participants donations) they could have been well on the way to getting a new performing arts centre for all Tablelanders; something that we could all be proud of. Not to mention a wonderful legacy for the next generation to enjoy. Travelling shows would be willing to perform on a regular basis. What theatre company would be willing to perform in the present APA Building? An antiquated army kit shed from America, built by the Army in World War II. Long past its use by date (In my view, similar to the bosses of the APA and our illustrious power bloc and the casting vote of our present council). The APA has gone backwards at least 10 to 15 years – what a shame. Thanks Cr Hodge and Co. Doug Seawright, Atherton

Four years – yay or nay? By Justin Fris MEMBER for Dalrymple Shane Knuth believes that state governments and elected members of parliament do not deserve a four year term in office. As part of the local government election on March 19, a state referendum will be held on whether Queenslanders say ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ to four year terms for state politicians. Voters will be required to vote on the matter once they have finalised their councillor and mayoral preferences. From the moment the referendum has been made public, Mr Knuth has staunchly opposed any move to extend parliamentary terms. “It is essential that the public be given regular opportunity to choose who they want to represent them, or get rid of poor performing Politicians” Mr Knuth said. “Queensland is the only state in Australia without an Upper House, and an election is your opportunity to air your grievances.” In a recent interview with The Express, Mr Knuth added: “Four year terms would result in poorer performing governments and MP’s, who would take the electorate for granted for three and a half years.” “They would then appear to be all friendly and attempt to hand out goodies in the last year.” Additionally, he has raised concerns over the publication of each form – believing that the ‘no’ argument may be hindered. “We are disappointed at the inequality as there is a clear disadvantage visually for the ‘No’ case,” Mr Knuth said. “The ‘No’ case has already been put at a disadvantage resource wise, while the majors have all the weight of the party to influence voters,” “Now we can see a clear difference between the formatting of each case, although we were told to simply provide the text.” Mr Knuth added: “We were told - “The format and printing style must not unfairly favour one argument”, however I think this is exactly what has happened. “Though it’s a slight difference - we believe it is a significant one, we are just trying to keep the government accountable.”

entertainment ‘The Lady in the Van’ – a must see thought provoking tale Maggie Smith stars in the charming and thought provoking ‘THE LADY IN THE VAN’, which opens this week at the Rising Sun Cinema, in Mareeba. Inspired by a true story – it's all about a lady who parks her camper van on another person's property. Set in In 1973 in London, playwright Alan Bennett (Alex Jennings) develops an unlikely friendship with Miss Shepherd (Maggie Smith), a homeless woman who lives in a van in his driveway for the next 15 years. Also continuing on the big screen is ‘SPOTLIGHT’. The dramatic story of the Boston Globe's prize-winning investigation into the Catholic church – and the broader religious community. ZOOLANDER 2, the Ben Stiller comedy also continues for a second week.
THE LADY IN THE VAN – Review by Christina Kluntz: The Lady in the Van is a Charming and thought-provoking tale. Maggie Smith at her best is a beautiful thing to watch, whether she's playing a haughty Dowager Countess or a cantankerous homeless woman. And it's hard to imagine how anyone else could have done justice to the complicated character that is Miss Mary Shepherd. The Lady in the Van is the "mostly true" story of how Shepherd parked her banged-up van in the driveway of playwright Alan Bennett in London's Camden Town in the 1970s. He thought she would leave after a few months. She stayed for 15 years.
Plenty of other well-known British actors come along for the ride, including James Corden, Jim Broadbent and Frances de la Tour. And, of course, Alex Jennings deserves credit for his sympathetic performance as not one but two Bennetts. There's Bennett the writer and Bennett the man, and the two bicker like an old married couple about Shepherd and pretty much everything else. Their discussions raise some interesting questions about Bennett's motivations for allowing Shepherd to stay. Is he being nice or is he too timid to say no? G’s hold off fast finishing Comets By Justin Fris
THE Young G’s (nee MBA Deadleys) were given a real fright during their 51-47 win over the Comets last Thursday evening in the Mareeba Basketball League. After heading to the three quarter time break with a 40-27 lead in their keeping, the G’s stopped to a walk and just did enough to get the win. Both sides came into the game having opened their season with a loss and the speed of the match was frenetic. For what the Young G’s had in enthusiasm and speed, the Comets were able to match them in experience. Each team traded early baskets, but could have made a lot more with their opportunities. Ashton Cater set the tone early for his side, doing his best to get good offensive looks. The Comets were led superbly by David Hawke. He pulled the strings in the midcourt, which helped dictate a better shooting performance for the quarter.
Over the other side, the G’s dominated possession, controlling the shot clock at will. Alas for them, they only came away with 4/14 from the field. Holding a 26-22 lead at the half, the G’s got the hot hand early in the third and set up a seemingly match winning lead. However, the Comets charged home with a wet sail in the last, going on an impressive 12-3 point scoring run. Suddenly, G’s players were second guessing. The in-control tempo they had shown for three quarters had started to sport noticeable chinks. The Comets would get to within four points, before Tyson Tatti stepped up to the plate and nailed several crucial baskets. This week’s fixtures are as follows: Red Devils v Comets (7.10pm), Young G’s v MBA Express (8.10pm) and Barras v Ciggy Butts (9.10pm). Matches are held each Thursday evening at the Mareeba PCYC Sports Hall on Walsh Street in Mareeba. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Northern Pride visit Mareeba
The Northern Pride and Mareeba Gladiators held a scratch match last Thursday.

THE Northern Pride made a special trip out west last Thursday evening, where they greeted local fans and trained with the Mareeba Gladiators senior grades under lights at Davies Park. After a less than ideal 2015 season in the INTRUST Super Cup, the Pride lads were trim, alert and heeded instructions from their coach, Joe Callaghan. Such exercises are of value for both parties. For the Pride, they are able to maintain close ties with the community and give back to those who have helped them on their journey. For the Gladiators players, they were able to witness how a semi-professional
footballer goes about their business under pressure. Playing in a level directly below the National Rugby League, it was obvious from the beginning that there are no shortcuts. Players jog over quickly to their water bottles, have a quick drink and are back out for the next drill in a total of 30 seconds. When Coach Callaghan is talking, every eye is on him. They then execute the drill as has been directed to them. Hopefully this experience can lay a solid foundation for the Gladiators, who are keen to play finals football in 2016.

Bulls FFA clash
Need for speed met at Springmount Raceway FAR North motoring enthusiasts finally got their need for speed last Saturday, with Springmount Raceway holding their first ever meeting. In an exclusive event for members and sponsors of the drag strip facility, crowd numbers and spirits were high, despite the torturous sun beating down from high above. Springmount Raceway director Evan Yelavich said he was pleased with how the event played out and had received positive feedback from those who attended.
“It was a really good day out overall,” he said. “In terms of crowd, you’re probably looking at around 1-2,000 people. We currently have 800 paid up members, which is really encouraging. “We had 125 cars compete over the day – we actually had the limit the number, as we had a late flurry of entrants.” Racers and spectators travelled far and wide to the track, with some racers coming up from far south as Mackay. Mr Yelavich added that the facility was looking to install permanent shade
gazebos for spectators in due course and was optimistic about the upcoming season ahead. Springmount’s next meeting (grand opening) will be accessible to all members of the public and has been pencilled in for Saturday, March 19 (day of the local government election). With all the talk of local government elections and voting, the meeting is sure to be extremely popular, as many search for a method of relaxation.
Carlssen scores ton for Mareeba U/14’s James Carlsson hits a boundry to reach his century.
This weekend’s FFA Cup Round 1 clash against the Leichhardt Lions will serve as a massive test for the Mareeba Bulls, which will double up as opportunity for some new blood to try their hand at premier league level football. It is not secret that the Bulls have started the pre-season a little slower then usual, and are coming up against a Leichhardt Lions outfit who has been preparing since the start of January; and have a handful of games under their belt. But as usual, Bulls coach Alex Srhoj only sees positives coming out this weekend’s game. “It’s going to be a test for sure, but it’s an opportunity to see where we are at; and for some of the younger guys who have been working hard to see how they can handle the level without competitions points on the line,” he said. The Bulls though still have plenty of firepower to run over the Lions, with the return of veteran Dennis Allen and striker Steven Cater joining seasoned professionals Paul Ruiz, Alex Plowman and Robert Pendenza. Meanwhile the younger generation of Adrian Madrid, Nicholas Tallarico and the two Ben’s (Stabile and Fresta) are expected to show their potential as regulars in the Bulls premier side. All the while reigning FNQ Premier league player of the year Wayne Srhoj waits in the wings; and is getting back into the swing of pre-season training. Mareeba’s wealth of young talent coming through the ranks is looking strong, with a couple possibly expected to feature this weekend. Club champion Wayne Srhoj has been helping the youngsters as a mentor at pre-season training. The Bulls FFA Cup clash with the Lions kicks off at 7pm at White Rock in Cairns.
Promising signs for Roosters

New signing Christopher Campbell.
JAMES Carlsson wrote himself into Mareeba cricketing folklore last Saturday afternoon at Kerribee Park, after producing a swashbuckling innings of 103 for the Mareeba Bandits U/14’s. Retiring not out (off 165 balls) Carlsson’s teammates didn’t let him down, with the hosts finishing on 5/264 against the Innisfail Storm.
In reply, the visitors were knocked over for 165, with several bowlers sharing the load together. Standout performers were Finley Green (2/7 off 6 overs), Tyson Brown (2/24 off 6 overs) and Dylan Eaton who produced a spell (2/22 off 4 overs) that the late Richie Benaud would have been proud of.
Gladiators jersey auction nets $8,850

THE Atherton Roosters made an industrious start to their 2016 pre season campaign, despite suffering a 20-14 defeat against Townsville Norths in last Saturday evening’s trial match at Roosters Stadium. Seats were at an absolute premium along the clubhouse side of the ground, as fans sought relief from the searing heat. The hosts burst from the blocks early on, racing to a 14-0 lead. Several players got a tidy hitout, which pleased the coaching staff.
the Come & join in excitement!
Jason Murgha.
A couple of disallowed tries didn’t do the home side any favours in the final stretch – with the bigger bodies of Norths able to eventually grind out a victory. Travelling Norths supporters and officials had a wonderful time during their stay in Atherton and said that they were keen to return in 2017. The Roosters travel to Irvinebank this Saturday afternoon, in their annual ‘Footy to the Bush’ concept. An additional match has been included, with the Roosters U/16’s coming up against Malanda – before the U/18’s will take centre stage.
MAREEBA
SPEEDWAY This Sunday, 10am-3pm THE Mareeba Gladiators held their annual jersey auction last Friday evening at the Mareeba Leagues Club. A total of 17 jerseys were auctioned off during the evening, with local Elders livestock agent Mark Peters in top form as always. Overall, a gross of $8,850 was raised, which will be put toward the club’s finances.

After a sluggish opening, prices steadily increased. A top price of $1000 was realised twice (jersey numbers 5 and 12), with the Mareeba Leagues Club purchasing both items. Club president Andrew Foster paid tribute to all in attendance and was excited about this weekend’s home trial against Mossman/PD.
