Double the fun as kids head back to school Thousands of children across the region said goodbye to the holidays and headed back to the classrooms today for the start of the new school year. For 5-year-old Mareeba twins Savannah and Quaide Gostelow, it was double the excitment as they prepared for their first day of Prep at St Thomas’s Parish School in Mareeba.
Ice forum in Mareeba
As part of the ‘Building Safer Communities’ program, a community forum on Ice (crystal methamphetamine) will be held in Mareeba on Wednesday, February 10, at the Mareeba International Club. The community forum is open to all parents, friends, family members, community organisations and concerned residents to learn about and discuss the issues faced by our community as a result of Ice use. Mareeba Police Senior Sergeant (and officer
in charge) Derek Garner said that while Ice is not in epidemic proportions in Mareeba, it is an excellent opportunity to inform the community of its devastating effects. “Ice is a problem in almost every community in some shape of form; it’s a drug that impacts heavily on the family and friends of those that have the addiction,” Snr Sgt Garner said. The MC for the evening will be Joanne Brown from ATODS (Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug Services). On the expert panel for the evening

Presenting an overview on Ice will be Dr Leann Mortimer – and representing Mental Health Services, Sally Gordon. The forum is designed to give parents an idea of conversations they should have with their children to deter them from experimenting with drugs. Resources will be available to provide infor-
mation on ice and the services that are available to support people in the community. The expert panel will answer questions like: How do we tell if our kids or friends are taking it and what are the symptoms? What do we do when we find out? The forum will end with time for questions from the community to the expert panel that can be directed openly to the appropriate service. All concerned residents are invited to attend the forum from 6pm.

MANAGING EDITOR Carl Portella
Part-time gold prospector turned author, Dave Wright, has published his first novel: “Blood Gold Revenge”, achieving rave reviews since its release in late December, 2015. A unique Australian action-thriller – “Blood Gold Revenge” is a fictional adventure story – set against the harsh, but incredible outback of North Queensland; and the secrets that lie deep within the unknown. There is gold in the vastness of the Australian outback, and a special breed of men who prospect for it. Tim is bush-hardened and skilled; the love for this harsh country comes naturally. His prospecting partner, John, shares Tim’s love of the freedom, but times have changed. A new breed of prospector has reason to appreciate the desolate isolation of the bush – but it’s not gold he’s after. The country’s biggest meth lab is doing well, and its owner, Mr C, does not appreciate passers by. The brutish Maxine, her husband Scrubber, and broth-
er Price have agreed to run interference for Mr C. After all, they have always enjoyed killing the odd lone prospector when they have had the chance. But they make a mistake, and the solitary prospector they pick off one day is not alone as they thought. There are witnesses to the crime this time - and these witnesses want justice for their friend. Jeff Collins, Manager of Gold Detecting and Prospecting Forum, commented after reading the book: “Clive Cussler has some serious competition from this new Australian writer. Not only does he give a descriptive narration of the Australian outback and the rigours of gold prospecting, he provides a thrilling murder mystery with a dramatic and exciting conclusion to some of the situations facing overseas tourists – a great read.” Dave, who was mostly raised in the outback and schooled via correspondence, finished school at 15 to go and work in the remote gold mines of Northern Australia;
and when time permits, he still rides the hills prospecting for gold with his mates. “Blood Gold Revenge” was a work of passion for first time author Dave, who never actually dreamed he would write a book. “I have always wanted to make a movie - but when I started putting my thoughts on paper, the book just developed from there,” he said. “Readers will enjoy this intense look into the forbidden outback country and its deep secrets; and will enjoy the twists and turns that evolve as the book advances. “My book is dedicated to all who have missing family members in the Australian outback and I hope the answers become apparent for closure or justice. “I am a big supporter of the ‘no body, no parole’ law; there would be nothing worse than not knowing where your loved one lies.” This novel is addictive, flows easily and hard to put down once you start. It is really when the inquisitive reader completes the novel, that the mystery begins. Dave has since commenced writing the sequel. “Blood Gold Revenge” is available from Amazon. com, Bookpal and locally in Mareeba at Mareeba News and NQ Miners Den in Cairns.

LOCAL primary schools in the Mareeba region are reaping the benefits of a close working relationship with Mareeba State High School. Off the back of excellent communication and goodwill between local school officials, all schools are working in tandem to improve the transition from primary to high school. Local principals, staff and parents gathered at MSHS last Thursday afternoon, where they were able to gain insight into MSHS’s subjects and outcomes for 2016. MSHS Principal Scott Whybird spoke about the significance of both communication and collaboration across the board – and he was very optimistic about local schools working together. “This is the first opportunity we have had to all get together as a
group,” he said. “We thought it would be a great opportunity for local principals to come into our school and meet some of our heads of department and staff.” He added: “One of the things we are really trying to look at is the collaboration between all of our schools and things that we can do to work at that. “We’re really looking hard at what we can do to improve ourselves.” All representatives from the various heads of department then introduced themselves to the audience and outlined the various subjects offered within their portfolio. The atmosphere was extremely positive and the occasion fruitful, which will hopefully result in a bumper school year in 2016.

Bypass a step closer for Mareeba Discussions have recently been held between Mareeba Shire Council and the Department of Transport and Main Roads (DTMR) regarding the planned future northern bypass linking the Mulligan Highway and the Mareeba-Dimbulah Road. This project has been in the planning stage with DTMR for many years, however recent discussions indicate that funding may be available in the near future for the new road. The proposed current alignment for the bypass will link with the Mareeba Industrial Park (MIP) and pass through property owned or under the control of Council. Pagani goes into bat for TRC staff By Justin Fris
PAY rises were at the forefront of discussion at last Thursday morning’s Tablelands Regional Council meeting. Councillors voted unanimously in approving findings from the Local Government Remuneration and Discipline Tribunal Report 2015, which will see all TRC councillors receive a pay rise from July 1, 2016. From July 1, TRC councillor salaries will be as follows: Mayor $122,631 (from $120,226), Deputy Mayor $76,644 ($75,141) and each councillor $65,147 ($63,870).
Later in the meeting, Cr Marjorie Pagani attempted to put through an alternative pay rise motion for TRC staff during the confidential component of the meeting. However, her motion was lost 3-2, with Cr’s Geoff Stocker, Peter Hodge and Mayor Rosa Lee Long voting against it. “What I was trying to do was to give some parity of wages to the staff – and some fairness,” she said. “The staff have not had a pay increase for three years. And in that time, councillors have had three pay increases – with another one due in July. “The motion that was passed at the coun-
cil meeting was to give them a very small increase; (1.8 per cent) and only back dated to July last year, with no lump sum payment at all.” She added: “My motion would have given them a very modest lump sum of $1300 – plus a 2 per cent increase, which would have been back dated from January, 2015.” Cr Pagani believed that TRC staff have taken on extra work since major staff cuts; and that they haven’t received proper recognition for their added responsibilities. “My message for the staff is don’t give up on this,” she said. “There are people out there supporting you.”

TRC adds bureaucratic barriers to Rocky Creek War Memorial Park
A public meeting will be held in a bid to gauge interest in forming a new Rocky Creek War Memorial Park committee. By Justin Fris
A public meeting will be held to gauge expressions of interest in the formation of a new Rocky Creek War Memorial Park committee. TRC councillors Marjorie Pagani and Rod Marti supported an alternative motion, which would have seen the current management arrangements of the park remain intact until after the March 19 local government election. This would have allowed newly elected councillors to have greater choice and flexibility in how both the committee and management of the park could be coordinated in future years. The duo were outvoted by Cr’s Geoff Stocker, Peter Hodge and Mayor Lee Long, who deemed urgency as the ideal course of action. Cr Pagani – who has worked closely with previous committee members on major events such as VP (Veterans of the Pacific) Day – said the alternative motion would have provided greater flexibility for the incoming council. “I just think it was quite stunning,” she said. “In about one month’s time, there will be an entirely new council. “And with the possible exception of Rod Marti, I highly doubt if any of the current councillors will be in the new one.”
Cr Pagani said that both feedback and income from last year’s VP Day was the best it had been since she had been involved. “The rush puzzles me,” she said. “We have a month to go. Myself, Cr Linwood and Bishop Tony Hall-Matthews have the matter in hand, along with the council staff that assist us, who are brilliant. “I proposed that we continue running it for the following month, where there are no events or festivities. Simply managing the park and keeping it as is; and let the new council decided on what it wants to do.” She added: “But instead, this report was railroaded through – and the only reason that is apparent to me, is that it is a way of trying to control the new council.” The proposed changes in the report appear to add a significantly greater workload to council staff, along with added liabilities for prospective committee members. Once Cr Pagani’s alternative motion was defeated, Cr Stocker moved a motion that a public meeting be held in a bid to engage with the community and outline expressions of interest for a new committee. Mayor Rosa Lee Long agreed with Cr Stocker’s motion and said that the formation of a new committee was of high priority – as it would give them greater time to prepare for events later in 2016.

Eradication of wild dogs
The Palaszczuk Government has committed an additional $5 million over three years to support initiatives aimed at destroying wild dog and cat populations. “We are directing $4 million to support wild dog projects in drought-hit areas; and that funding is being complemented by $10 million in commonwealth funding,” Agricultural Minister Leanne Donaldson said. “It is a sensible collaborative approach that seeks to bring together all three levels of government as well as industry oversight groups and primary producers in a practical and targeted response. “This approach has proved so popular it attracted more than 60 expressions of interest, mainly focussed on wild dog cluster fencing and management programs. “Control of pests such as wild dogs has been a priority for the Palaszczuk Government – an election commitment that we have fast tracked.” Minister Donaldson said the Queensland Govern-

ment’s approach was in contrast to the lack of interest of the Liberal National Party - in government and now opposition. “In attacking cluster fencing, the LNP is attacking the approach favoured by the Federal Agriculture Minister, Barnaby Joyce,” Minister Donaldson said. “The projects Mr Joyce has enthusiastically supported will take a multi-pronged approach; undertaking a range of activities such as cluster fencing, baiting and trapping, and weed management of the key pest plant prickly acacia. “We will continue to work closely with key peak body organisations on practical solutions and won’t be distracted by the LNP’s opposition. “I have met, and will continue to meet, with producers and stakeholders (including AgForce) to discuss wild dogs and ways to eradicate them; and will attend the first meeting of the reconstituted QDog next month.”

Virus outbreak at Herberton hospital FOUR people died at the Herberton hospital last week, after a serious respiratory virus outbreak engulfed the facility. Instantaneously, Queensland Health implemented a raft of infection control methods in a bid to quell further cases. Access to the hospital has been limited in recent days, while authorities take control of the situation. It is believed that the victims became infected with a human
metapneumovirus, with its symptoms akin to influenza. Tablelands regional division two councillor Shaaron Linwood (whose division is part of Herberton) said she was confident that hospital staff would quickly get on top of the situation. “We’ve got terrific staff at the Herberton hospital,” she said. “They do a brilliant job and I’ve got no doubt that they are doing all they can to try and improve the situation.”

Windy Hill wind farm noise monitoring program discussed By Justin Fris
TABLELANDS regional division six councillor Marjorie Pagani was left disappointed at last Thursday morning’s TRC meeting, after her alternative motion regarding the Windy Hill wind farm noise monitoring program was defeated. Cr Pagani – who has vocally objected against several local wind farms – believes that the motion passed by Council plays right into the hands of developers. “In this case, if the consent of landowners is obtained to waive liability for the noise on a permanent basis that is attached to the title, then no compliance is necessary,” she said. “Now the background against this is
important. Only five sites were tested. The sites that are being affected the most were not tested. “The reason the badly affected landowners were not included in these tests is unclear.” Cr Pagani added: “The message it sends is that if you don’t wish to comply, and you can buy out all of the surrounding properties, that’s ok. “Or, if you can persuade surrounding property owners to waive liability on their title deeds effectively, then that is ok as well. “But we (TRC) have very strongly enforced noise and dust regulations against chicken farmers, pig farmers.”

“They broke in while I slept” Officer in charge of Mareeba Police, Senior Sergeant Derek Garner, has confirmed with The Express that break and enters within the township have spiked in recent months. This news comes as a number local residents called The Express about the disturbing trend. “They tried to break in while I was asleep,” said a local resident, who wished to remain anonymous. “I heard them removing the screens from my windows. I was terrified, so I just switched on all the lights and they ran off.” Other residents called with similar stories - one stating that, they (the intruders) came back twice. “We should be able to live in our homes without fear of being robbed in the middle of the night by a bunch of kids. Where are the parents of these children? And why aren’t they being made responsible for their children’s actions? Will this ever go away? said a frustrated mother. ‘Why is nothing being done?’ is the question on people’s lips. Senior Sergeant Garner added: “The majority of these break and enters are opportunistic - where intruders usually target unlocked doors and windows; and it’s more than likely that youths are responsible. It’s not just businesses that are being targeted, but people’s homes as well. “When you go to bed, make sure your home is secure, the front door is locked, the windows are closed, the car is locked and some security lighting would not go astray; and do the same when you’re not at home.” Police are aware of the problem - but as is almost always the case - because of the youth element, a slap on the wrist is all these serial offenders will receive. Looking out for your neighbour is another way to reduce crime; and if you see anything suspicious, then call the police to look into the matter.
Mosquitoes in the area The number of mosquitoes in FNQ have increased significantly following the recent rains and higher temperatures - providing favourable breeding conditions. Some pooling of water has occurred and allowed the mosquitoes to lay their eggs. “Council recommends the use of personal repellent and protective clothing where possible, to ensure you avoid getting bitten. If you notice any water containers around the home which may be holding water as a result of the recent rain, then these must be tipped out, stored undercover and turned upside down, to ensure the mosquitoes cannot lay their eggs in the water,” MSC Mayor Tom Gilmore said. “Residents are encouraged to tidy up palm fronds and empty any containers of water in yards. If you have any still water around your home, that’s where they love to breed,” Mayor Gilmore added. “If residents are still experiencing high numbers of mosquitoes, licensed pest control operators can apply a residual
barrier spray around private property for longer ongoing control. . “Prevention’s often better than the cure.” Below is a summary of what residents can do to avoid being bitten: • Wearing personal repellent • Covering up in light-coloured loose fitting clothing (especially around dawn and dusk) • Using surface sprays in outdoor areas and surfaces where mosquitoes may rest • Burning mosquito coils or citronella • Screening the house • Removing or thinning out excess vegetation around the home • Use fans to increase air movement • Ensure any items holding water around the home are tipped out at least weekly or removed completely • Fill pot plant bases with sand • Ensure roof gutters are clean Anyone showing symptoms of dengue or similar mosquito-borne disease, are encouraged to visit a doctor immediately.

MSC reconsiders Therwine Street timeline AFTER a less than ideal response during the tendering process, the Mareeba Shire Council said it will reconsider how it can deliver the finishing touches to streetscape works along Therwine Street in Kuranda. MSC Mayor Tom Gilmore said that Council received no formal tenders – which means Council may well have to complete the process on their own. “The first stage of the refurbishment of Therwine Street commenced last November, with the installation of conduit for the undergrounding of power. Congratulations to Mareeba Shire Council staff which has done a great job, with minimal disruption to the community and traders," Mayor Gilmore said. trical cabling and removes the overhead supply. “During the extensive public consultation around this project, it was made very clear that we should avoid undertaking the major street scaping works in the peak mid-year tourist season; as a result it is likely that works will commence later this year. “We are now in the process of developing a works plan and schedule. Once this is finalised, Council will ensure that the community is kept fully informed. “This project will revitalise the existing streetscape and will certainly improve one of Kuranda's major streets. We look forward to being able to deliver this important project for the community.”

30.24 percent rise by 2017/18 By Justin Fris
THE Tablelands Regional Council’s financial projections indicate net rates and utility charges will rise by 30.24% over the next three years. TRC Mayor Rosa Lee Long handed down the budget on June 18, with the ‘one-off’ de-amalgamation levy of $100 dominating ratepayer discussions around the water cooler. Delving a little deeper however, there are several figures which make for interesting reading; and have a direct co-relation with increased household charges. TRC officers project the following total net rates and charge increases within the next three years: (12.17 per cent in 2015/16, 7.54 per cent in 2016/17 and 10.91 per cent in 2017/18). Once various discounts and remissions are taken into account,
these amended official net rates and charges figures for ratepayers are: (12.64 per cent in 2015/16, 7.01 per cent in 2016/17 and 10.59 per cent in 2017/18) which results in the 30.24 per cent rise over
the next three years. Although there was only a ‘general’ rate rise of six percent this year, increases to waste and water charges and the de-amalgamation levy ensure the total rate rise was actually 12.64 per cent overall. If those percentages are then converted into dollars, it roughly equates to each TRC ratepayer paying over $1000 in increases by
2017/18. Both business stakeholders and ratepayers within the TRC jurisdiction have had an opportunity to run their eyes under the budget
and offer their opinions. TRC CEO Ian Church said the quotable projections were ‘conservative’; and provides some context on the decisions as follows:

TABLELANDS Regional Councillor Geoff Stocker believes Atherton would be an ideal location for a new Northern Australia development office. In the document released a fortnight ago by the Abbott Government – it was recommended that a ‘Northern Australia’ development office be relocated from Canberra – in a bid to greater serve
the region. The office would be responsible for handling all major issues and policies that impact the north of our nation. Cr Stocker’s motion (which was carried unanimously during ‘General Business’) will see representatives of the TRC write to
both Premier Palaszczuk and Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss to garner their support. During his address to councillors, Cr Stocker said: “I think most councillors would have been aware that during the last week, I’ve been reading through this White Paper on Australian development; looking for things which might be useful, might affect or benefit this Council and Tablelands communities. “There is one thing there which I think may be worth acting upon, if the Council is so inclined. The recommendation in here that the office of North Australia be shifted to the north; out of
Canberra. “At the moment, it is located within the Deputy Prime Minister’s office in Canberra; and there is no location suggested at this
particular point. “I think it could be appropriate that we suggest to the Deputy Prime Minister that Atherton be an optimal location for this particular office. “There are a lot of advantages, logical advantages, technical advantages, in choosing a site like Atherton. “It’s well ahead of a lot of particular sites, but I think the end result would be more to do with politics than technical aspects. “But I think it would be useful that Council at least throw our hat in the ring, and suggest it to the Deputy PM that Atherton would be a good place to establish this office.

These remarks have been taken on board by Core Logic RD research data analyst Tim Lawless, who has facilitated a nationwide housing affordability map. Freely accessible online – participants can enter their details (marital status and age range) into the database – which determines the likelihood of home or unit affordability within their local government jurisdiction. So how did the Tablelands fare as a region? Well, according to the housing affordability map, it depends on your personal circumstances, in-
come and preference. If you are single, aged between 25 and 34 and wish to purchase a unit, the results are as follows: Median Unit Value ($205,000), Median Gross Income ($45,564), Estimated Gross Income for purchase ($46,857) With an earnings difference of $1,293, on these medians, purchasing a unit would be very much nip and tuck. However, if you have those same set of circumstances and wish to purchase a house at median price, it is a longshot at best:
Median House Value ($315,000), Median Gross Income ($45,564), Estimated Gross Income for purchase ($72,000) With a massive earnings difference of $26,436 on these medians, a single person purchasing a house would find the going extremely tough. If you are a couple and wanting to purchase either a unit or a home as first buyers into the market – even with average incomes – you will find the going significantly easier. CONTINUED ON PAGE 3

Dalrymple’s dilemma – Gordon and ALP seal fate of the bush
Sisters Paityn and Kinsley Glaspy at the Malanda Hotel and Spar Halloween ‘Trick or Treat’ event.
By Justin Fris REGIONAL Queensland has been dealt another hammer blow from lawmakers in Brisbane, after the Palaszczuk Government opposed the LNP’s Electoral (Redistribution Commission) and Another Act Amendment Bill 2015 last Wednesday evening. The LNP had designed the Bill in a bid to create more regional electorates and MP’s – and subsequently attempt to improve the standard of living conditions and resources for rural and remote electorates. Instead, rumblings from Brisbane are indicating when the next formation of state electoral boundaries are re-distributed – regional Qld could lose up to four electorates – with these seats tipped to be allocated to the south-east corner of the state. The number of MP’s in parliament will remain the same, despite Qld’s population having increased by two million since the matter was last reviewed in 1987. Locally, the future of the Dalrymple electorate is in grave doubt, with officials tipped to dissolve it and merge it into the neighbouring Hinchinbrook electorate.
Communities celebrate Halloween in style
a ‘haunted’ look last Saturday Malanda was just one of many local communities who took on for Halloween. Local evening, as children and families dressed up in their scariest costumes treat’ event, which was hugely businesses, Malanda Hotel and Spar, facilitated a special ‘trick or Malcolm organised a ‘trick or popular with the towns locals. In Mareeba, local mum Samantha 65 children taking part. These treating’ event around the streets of Mareeba with more than the region last Saturday to are just two of the many Halloween events that were held across commemorate Halloween.
STAGE 3 COMING SOON!
For local member Shane Knuth, naturally this outcome is devastating. Another MP to be affected will be fellow KAP MP Robbie Katter (Member for Mt Isa), whose current electorate is already the same size as France. It is tipped to be increased even further – with some preliminary speculation that the south-eastern boundary of the Mt Isa electorate may eventually touch the outskirts of Toowoomba. Mr Knuth was naturally disappointed with the decision of the vote – in particular, due to the fact that the Member for Cook, Billy Gordon, had sided with the Palaszczuk Government, instead of his fellow rural constituents. If Dalrymple was to become dissolved in its current form before the next election, Mr Knuth would possibly need to run as a candidate for either Cook or Hinchinbrook – or potentially even call time on his state political career. “I cannot believe the Bill was rejected, he said. “Labor had all the slogans but had no solutions to the issue. “A lot is still yet to be finalised and submitted formally – but it definitely will impact everybody. THE Mt Emerald Wind Farm ofďŹ cially received federal approval last Thursday afternoon in Canberra from Federal Environment Minister, Greg Hunt. After receiving approval from the state government only a few months earlier, the project has ďŹ nally leapt over its ďŹ nal major political hurdle. For Port Bajool director John Morris, his team and RATCH Australia, the approval is welcomed – and now gives them a ‘fairly clear road’ in commencing the project. “We are looking forward to moving along with the project,â€? Mr Morris said. “After almost 8000 hours of study and research, we’ve now reached a point where the authorities are happy with the project.â€? Mr Morris added that project organisers were happy to continue working with all members of the community in regard to the Mt Emerald Wind Farm – regardless of whether they are for or against the project. “We will address the problems noted in the recent ‘Infrastructure Australia Northern Australia’ audit report, that electricity availability and higher costs in Northern Australia remain a major issue to both residents and business,â€? Mr Morris said. “Our Community BeneďŹ t Fund will
also invest $200,000 per year to fund projects or initiatives that will beneďŹ t the local community once the wind farm commences operation.â€? RATCH project developer Terry Johannesen said he believed the Tablelands economy would beneďŹ t greatly from the decision. “Our assessment shows that 100 to 150 million dollars will be spent domestically, with the majority of this investment to be spent locally,â€? Mr Johannesen said. “Expenditure during operations is expected to be between $13 million to $17 million dollars per year. “Employment during the construction phase can be expected to peak above 150 - while 15 permanent jobs will be created to operate the wind farm - including operations and maintenance, environmental and land management staff and administration.â€? Federal Member for Leichhardt Warren Entsch said he was optimistic about the project’s future – and was happy for the developers that the decision had been reached. “It will also create 155 jobs during the construction phase, 11 jobs during the operational phase and an additional 145 jobs to be created indirectly during the construction phase,â€? he said. AREEBA Shire Council unanimously approved Springmount Raceway’s application for a material change of use last Wednesday morning, providing they comply with flagged criteria. In the application, the raceway (in conjunction with the Australian National Drag Racing Association) had requested greater time flexibility in
their approved racing hours, along with determining an appropriate number of race meets. With an emphasis on minimising noise for local residents, MSC planning officers recommended: “In an attempt to minimise noise impacts, it is recommended that the 14 proposed annual race meetings be reduced to 12, or one per month, particularly considering the requested addition of three standalone burnout competitions to the facilities annual events calendar.
“It is also recommended that the requested Friday operating hours of the full weekend car show be reduced from 9:00am - 10:00pm to 9:00am - 6:00pm which would be consistent with what was proposed in the applicant’s previous request to change development approval for DA/15/0005. “It is acknowledged that the development’s potential to impact on nearby residences will likely increase during the more noise sensitive evening hours of 6:00am - 10:00pm.
“For this reason, and given the uncertainty faced by Council throughout this decision making process, having only been provided predicted noise levels, it is considered reasonable to require the applicant, during a trial evening race/ burnout event, to commission at their expense, an on-ground noise impact assessment to determine actual noise levels experienced at nearby residences. entertainment Revenant hits the big screen Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy star in one of the most powerful and dramatic films to ever hit the Rising Sun screen. THE REVENANT is an incredible drama, based on a true story. It is one of the most talked about movies for ages, with DiCaprio giving an astounding performance in the lead role. Continuing this week is another true story – the drama JOY. Joy tells an incredible rags to riches, family story, staring Jennifer Lawerence and Robert De Niro. GOOSEBUMPS, with its spectacular fantasy adventure and excitement is also on screen, appealing to families with it's PG rating. If you have not seen SNOOPY AND CHARLIE BROWN: THE PEANUTS MOVIE, or STAR WARS VII – THE FORCE AWAKENS, you have one last chance to see both today, Wednesday January 27.
THE REVENANT
While exploring the uncharted Canadian wilderness in the 1800s, frontiersman Hugh Glass (Leonardo DiCaprio) sustains terrible injuries from a brutal bear attack. When his hunting team leaves him for dead, Glass must utilize his survival skills to find a way back. Grief-stricken and fueled by vengeance, Glass treks through the wintry terrain to track down John Fitzgerald (Tom Hardy), the former friend who betrayed and abandoned him. (Inspired by a true story) Review by Louise Keller: A primal thriller set in the wilderness of the American frontier in the 19th century, Inarritu's film is cinematic, powerful and raw. It's a story about survival, fuelled by determination, courage and revenge as it explores issues of loyalty, betrayal and redemption. While the narrative takes the form of a drama filled with unexpected twists, the film is essentially a visceral experience in which the elements of nature and the internal struggles are as much a
part of the action as the narrative. Watching The Revenant is an immersive experience with its breathtaking landscapes, extreme weather conditions, overt brutality and close up view of an unforgiving life in which survival is key. There are many textures, colours and tempos reflected in the waters that rush between the tall trees in the opening scenes. The perilous reality is quickly established as we get a sense of life as a fur trader, battling the elements and the constant imminent risks and dangers. Leonardo diCaprio's Hugh Glass is different from the other traders, prompted by his commitment to his native American son Hawk (Forrest Goodluck), his murdered Pawnee wife and connection to nature. Nothing prepares us for the shocking bear attack when Glass is mauled to inches of his life. However, John Fitzgerald's (Tom Hardy) disregard for human life when he leaves Glass for certain death in inhumane circumstances is far more shocking than a bear protecting its cubs. It is the strength of Glass's love for his

son above and beyond his own will to survive that motivates him to find the superhuman strength to crawl from his grave. The sight of DiCaprio with unkempt hair and facial hair, making his way across the vast landscape, the fur of the bear that nearly kills him wrapped around his shoulders in the extreme conditions, is an indelible sight. Demanding extreme physicality as well as a nuanced internal emotional thrust, DiCaprio brings a great intensity to the role. Hardy makes a fine adversary as the morally bankrupt Fitzgerald, while Domhnal Gleeson and Will Poulter, with their distinctive looks and strengths, are strong additions to the cast. I love the thrilling percussive fanfare in the lead up to the final confrontation between Glass and Fitzgerald. The score then offers what sounds like the orchestra tuning up, in anticipation of the final performance. There is everything to lose for both men and these scenes are violent and savage. Innarritu has made a formidable film with extreme elements and whose visual and emotional essence lingers.

Mazda MX-5 – Wheels Car of the Year The all new Mazda MX-5 has been awarded Wheels Car of the Year for 2016. Considered Australia’s most prestigious motoring award, the MX-5 is now a three time Wheels Car of the Year winner having also won in 1989 and 2005. This year’s win means three of the four MX-5 generations have been awarded Car of the Year. The first-ever Mazda MX-5 (NA) was launched at the Chicago Auto Show in 1989 and collected its first Wheels Car of the Year soon after. It was also voted as one of Wheels ‘Top 10 cars’ every year between 1989 and 1997 and judged the ‘Most Significant Car of the 1980s’. When the third generation MX-5 (NC) was unveiled in 2005 it took out that year’s Wheels Car of the Year, it also received Wheels magazine’s ‘Outstanding Auto Design’ award. “The Mazda MX-5 is motoring at its purest,” said Wheels editor Glenn Butler. “It proves that you don’t need brute power and insane speeds to have a momentous time behind the wheel. “The MX-5 roadster is a stunning achievement. It’s smaller on the outside but more practical on the inside, it’s lighter than its predecessors but is also stronger, and it is quite simply better than ever. “But, more than ticking boxes and meeting our tough testing criteria – which it did impressively – this is about the joy of driving a great car. “It’s an exhilarating experience and the driver is the true winner here.” Arriving in Australia last August from a sharp $31,990 plus on roads, and now avail-

able with a choice of 1.5 or 2.0 litre engine, the All-New Mazda MX-5 (ND) has recaptured the imagination of sports car lovers with 917 sales to the end of 2015 – a record sales tally for five consecutive months. It was also the nation’s best-selling sports car in November and December*. Also recently awarded 2015-2016 Japan Car of the Year, Mazda is delighted to receive this award for the third time. “MX-5 is central to Mazda’s vehicle design philosophy of Jinba Ittai - or Zoom-Zoom as
we prefer to call it - where the driver and car perform as one,” said Mazda Australia managing director Martin Benders. “In layman’s terms that means every drive makes you smile. “Almost one million owners worldwide are testament to the consistency and purity of the MX-5 product DNA delivered by Mazda over four generations and 26 years. “Winning three Wheels Car of the Year in those four generations shows that Mazda’s premier motoring judges fully agree.”
The All-New Mazda MX-5’s 2016 win takes Mazda’s Wheels Car of the Year tally to seven, having also won in 1980 (Mazda 323) , 1983 (Mazda 626) , 1989 (Mazda MX-5 NA), 1992 (Mazda 626), 2003 (Mazda RX-8) and 2005 (Mazda MX-5 NC). Since import brands became eligible to win Wheels Car of the Year in 1977, Mazda has been the most successful manufacturer. You can test drive the new Mazda MX-5 at Mareeba Mazda, 313- 315 Byrnes Street, or call the office on 4092 5100.

A Road Safety message as school starts for another year As Schools across the state head back this week for another packed year of study we will start to welcome another generation of drivers to our roads in Queensland. It is important to take a few seconds to speak to all Queenslanders about the importance of safely using our roads. It feels like 2016 has only just started and it has, but in the period from the 1st-17th January 2016 there were 11 fatalities on Queensland Roads, which is up 57.1% from this period last year. Further to this, using the most recent statistics, there were an additional 7000 Queenslanders hospitalized in 2013 as a direct result of motor vehicle accidents. To seasoned road users, think before you drive. Not just when you’ve been drinking but every single time you get behind the wheel, or jump in the passenger seat. Think about how your actions could not only impact your life, but the lives of your, family, friends and other road users. Furthermore to this, think of the
example you set for the younger generation. To the next generation, we know that when we hear of people in accidents we think, “That’s unfortunate – but the chances of it happening to me are next to none”. Every time you think of drink driving, every time you think of speeding, every time you run a stop sign you are only increasing the risk of becoming a statistic in 2016. This message is preached by various advocates each year, but this year we don’t think we need just another advocate. We think we need you, our next generation to think about how your actions will impact the lives of entire communities and realise that there are only so many times you can run the gauntlet of being blatantly irresponsible, before you will make a mistake that will change your life, and that of those you love forever.

Youth focus for MUFC pre season Age no barrier for participation in roller derby AT first glance for even the most ardent of sportsfans, roller derby can appear to be confusing and overwhelming. But like with anything - time and education find a way to quickly change this – and the Tableland Roller Derby League is a fantastic example of a quality brand of skill and camaraderie. Roller derby is a sport which is enjoyed by females and males of all ages and abilities across the world. Each match is played on a circular track - with each side having five players on the track at any given time, with additional substitutes. All players play defence and offence simultaneously. Within two halves, each match is split up into several ‘jams’. A jam is a short segment of play where each team has an opportunity to score points for their team. Each team appoints a designated ‘jammer’, who can score points by lapping members of the opposition. In a bid to counter this, players from each side endeavour to block each other in a bid for their jammer to make a successful scoring pass. On Sunday, registrations for the upcoming season will be held between 3pm and 5pm at the Atherton State High School hall. Tableland Roller Derby president Leanne Lydiard (ala ‘CrayZee’) said
there were many benefits from playing roller derby. Age and ability are no barriers for the club, who are keen for all sectors of the Tablelands to participate. “It’s an addictive sport,” she said. “You have so much fun and you learn life lessons. It’s challenging but rewarding it’s not your average ball sport, it’s great for all ages and abilities, it’s team work, you make new friends, you learn how to work with and communicate to a lot of different people. “There is a place for everyone, no matter the age, occupation or fitness level, the freedom it gives you. It’s empowering.” The team has an excellent coaching staff – all of whom are excellent communicators – and go that extra mile to make both new and experienced players feel welcome. New non-skating officials are encouraged to join the club. “If you are keen to learn more, come along to our sign on day,” Ms Lydiard said. “That way you are starting fresh with everyone else who signs up. If you are a little nervous, come along to one of our social skates – strap on some skates and see how it feels.” She added: “Also, if you message ‘Tableland Roller Derby’ on Facebook, one of the girls will reply on the same day.”

Nicholas Tallarico commences pre season training with the Bulls last Thursday.
By Justin Fris SUSTAINED success is a wonderful thing in football – and the Mareeba United Football Club has had an ample amount of it in recent seasons. However in a bid to maintain dominance, it is imperative to foster successful youth development pathways; and manage your first team squad accordingly. In last season’s 3-2 grand final victory over Stratford, seven of MUFC’s starting eleven were aged 33 or older. Experience is essential in big matches, however there comes a time when players retire and depth needs to be waiting in the wings. This statistic is well in the mind of MUFC coach Alex Srhoj, who said he is committed to giving youth a chance across all grades. “One thing we are really big on this year at the club is youth development coming through,” he said. “One of the main goals for the year is to really lay a solid foundation and bring the young guys through. “Show them that the future is theirs if they want it; and that all the coaches are on the same page training together.” Srhoj added: “It will also give them an excellent opportunity to learn from some of the senior players.” Spots in MUFC’s first team are still very much up for grabs, with some older members of the squad unsure of their playing status in 2016. Amongst these players is potentially Julian Madrid, who is arguably the finest goalkeeper and allround shot stopper in the FNQ Premier League. Madrid’s unavailability would take a massive hit into MUFC’s goalkeeping stocks, although it would

provide a great opportunity for young keepers to learn from veteran Ronnie Leporati. After steadily progressing through youth team football, there is a core nucleus of 23-24 year old footballers who are ready to make the jump into first team football. Srhoj believes that 2016 is the year that they can make their mark. MUFC’s preparation for the 2015/2016 pre season had been a little different, with three years of non stop football taking a toll on the squad. “We’ve probably been a bit more relaxed than in previous seasons,” he said. “But in saying that, I think we had to be, just to give some of the boys a bit of a break and a rest. “It’s been a massive three years for the core playing group. Some of them haven’t touched the ball since the Crad Evans, while others played in the 6-aside competition.” Still smarting from last year’s grand final loss, reports indicate that Stratford are hitting the training track very hard. They are also set to play the FNQ Heat in a pre season friendly next month. Leichhardt are also tipped to challenge MUFC this season, in what promises to be an extremely competitive season. “The fact that we are defending the premiership is a good thing,” he said. “However it is not something that we are worried about. “The principles stay the same. You work hard; you work hard for each other and stick to the foundations.” Srhoj added: “Our sport is based around the ability to play our football. This is the exact environment that we need to put the kids into straight away; and the more time they spend in game scenarios, hopefully the more they learn to make good decisions.”
Mareeba could form a girls only basketball competition in 2016.
Girls wanting to try their hand at basketball are invited to attend a free clinic in Mareeba this Friday, January 29. The Mareeba Basketball Association will be holding the girls-only basketball clinic from 3.30 to 5.30pm at the PCYC Hall - and everyone is welcome to come along. There will be lots of fun, with games and shooting hoops while learning skills. The clinic is open to all ages from prep to year 12. Mareeba Basketball Association official Tamar Myrteza said that if there is enough interest, the club will look at forming a girls-only competition in 2016. Currently, the MBA has a very successful ladies com-
petition across two grades. Players are extremely skilful – with many going on to represent their region, state and even country. One of these players is Sarrah Myrteza, who was part of the Cairns Dolphins at the recent state championships - where they claimed the bronze medal. She also was recently selected in the Townsville Fire’s WNBL academy and in the U18 State and emerging team. The clinic is a fantastic opportunity for local girls to begin a new sport, establish lifelong friendships and have lots of fun in a safe and inclusive environment. For more information contact Tamar on 0428 499 412.

JANUARY provides ample opportunities for lovers of tennis to watch hours of quality matchups from the comfort of their living room. Sure, the mechanics of watching a match are fairly standard. Many watch the ball go back and forth, while monitoring both score and set status. But for true experience beyond these fundamentals, there are a number of things you can do which will enhance your viewing pleasure. One of the greatest tennis minds in Australia is Alan Lane, who is president of the Port Douglas Tennis Club. Lane – who played alongside the likes of Australian greats John Newcombe and Rod Laver - believes there are four key components that the viewer can use to make any match more enjoyable. These components are: technique, tactics, physical skill set and psychology – all key indicators which determine who emerges as the victor in any match. Technique is obviously an essential part of any player’s game, however it almost certainly will differ from player to player. Lane said that instant replay on television coverage provides an excellent opportunity for the viewer to gain insight into the player’s strengths and weaknesses. “On the serve, for example, have you learnt that your toss is not far enough forward on your first serve?”, he said. “Then check very carefully to see how far forward the pros are actually tossing the ball. With luck you may be able to see some shots from the camera taken from the side or on top.” Tennis also provides a multitude of tactics, which are
punctuated by both consistency and momentum. Even if a player is trailing 5-2 in a set, sometimes only one point is all it takes for them to turn the tide. Once a player has lost momentum in the contest (even if they are leading the match) it can often lead to faults, double faults and poor shot selection. Lane encourages viewers to observe rallies closely – even by taking a tally of how many shots are fired. “So often the match is won and lost in the trenches,” he said. “In tennis terms, there are many parts to in the trenches; but to me, and especially in this day and age of almost nil net attack, the first big area of struggle is to maintain depth. “Depth can be referred to as subtle offence. It may not win the point outright like a huge winner, but for sure it will most times hold the opponent off of you; and the first outcome of this tactic will be that the opponent feels frustrated and many times becomes desperate and reckless (in trying to find ways of winning more points). “So when you are watching those long baseline rallies, look more closely at which player is hitting deeper (on average). And my prediction is that the player with more depth will most times end up winning the match.” Lane also believes observing footwork and agility (physicality) and player mannerisms (psychology) can often paint a clear understanding on how the outcome of the match will eventuate. With the Australian Open reaching the pinnacle of its competition, there has never been a better time to enhance your tennis viewing experience. Bandits cruise to victory over crosstown rivals By Justin Fris
THE Mareeba Bandits continued along their merry way in one day cricket, after a solid 86 run victory over Atherton last Sunday afternoon at Kerribee Park. In one of the most blistering home batting displays seen in recent times, the hosts set an imposing 7/219 target off their allotted 30 overs. Atherton never seriously tested this chase and concluded on 9/133 at the close of play. Urgency (or lack therof) ultimately

cost them any hope of victory. For the Bandits, skipper Brendan Payne sculpted a masterful 84 off 72 deliveries, along with impressive batting from Robert ‘Bomber’ Adams and Brendan Falvo. Youngster Kobe Martin (4/13 off 2 overs) and Adams (3/31 off 6 overs) had their way with the visitors’ batting order throughout the contest. The Bandits have the bye this weekend, before a busy month of cricket awaits them.
Roosters unveil key pre-season signings New Roosters signings Jake Dawes and Chris Campbell.
By Justin Fris
THE Atherton Roosters have recommenced pre season training, with the addition of two key signings from Young, NSW. Chris Campbell (Halfback) and Jake Dawes (Front Row) will be handy addition to Dean Howard’s side, who are keen to propel themselves into the Cairns District Rugby League top five. Both Campbell and Dawes travelled up to the Tablelands in mid-December and have fitted in nicely with the locals. The Roosters appear to have strengthened their kicking game over the offseason, which should put opposing defences on notice. Campbell – who loves sport in general – is extremely

passionate about rugby league. Since arriving in Atherton, he has been working hard in the gym alongside teammates, along with keeping up a good level of physical fitness. A front rower who loves being in the middle of the field, Dawes is a team player and added that: ‘Up here (Tablelands) is awesome’. Since the conclusion of the 2015 season, Coach Howard has outlined his strategy for the new season. It revolves around senior players putting in the hard yards, no one cutting corners and setting high standards on and off the field. Anticipation is slowly beginning to build at Roosters Stadium, with locals hopeful of a successful season for the tricolours.
