We will remember them
A SERIES of poppies placed along two rows of plaques at Rocky Creek War Memorial was the Tablelands’ way of saying thanks to its late national servicemen. The names of nine local national servicemen were recognised at a special dedication ceremony last Sunday, ahead of yesterday’s official National Servicemen’s Day. More than 280,000 young men served under Australia’s two national service schemes between 1951 and 1972. FULL STORY – PAGE 4
Hospital rumours quashed THE Cairns and Hinterland Hospital Health Service (CHHHS) has denied rumours Mareeba Hospital’s outpatient services and chronic disease unit are on the brink of closing down. Several rumours persisted last week that both services were being shut, with as many as 11 jobs to go including some doctors, nurses and admin staff. But CHHHS CEO Clare Douglas denied there were any plans to cut staff or services to the hos-
pital. “There are no changes to services or job losses at Mareeba Hospital,” she said. “There are no plans to close or downgrade services we currently provide at Mareeba Hospital, and we are committed to working with council, community, GPs and the Department of Health to plan how GP services will be managed beyond October 2017.” The State Government is still in negotiations

with the Federal Government to address a funding shortfall of $2 million when the existing Federal Council of Australian Governments (COAG) funding agreement runs out in October. Outpatient services could be one of those cut if no money is forthcoming from either the State or Federal governments, but Ms Douglas vowed the CHHHS would continue to work with the State Department of Health to ensure “there will be no reduction in services after the Federal Gov-
ernment’s COAG 19(2) funding expires”. “The Mareeba Hospital provides a range of important hospital and community services for the people of the Tablelands and we are committed to working with stakeholders to establish a solution to ensure the sustainable future of the hospital,” she said.

Mareeba newsagency a lucky pick A MAREEBA newsagency is fast proving to be the luckiest in the Far North after netting their sixth division one lotto winner in 14 years. Piagno’s News is celebrating again after a mystery Mareeba farmer’s 12game QuickPick ticket purchased at the store won a whopping $15 million in last Tuesday’s Oz Lotto draw. Store co-owner Kirrily Mulla said she cried tears of joy upon being told the news. “I was excited for Mareeba, the fact that it’s a small country town and it was a local farmer who won,” she said. “Last time we sold a division one for Oz Lotto night and four days later we sold another division one for Gold Lotto night in the same week. “Fingers crossed we’ll sell another one soon.” Piagno’s winning streak started with
a $187,020 Gold Lotto win in July 2003, a $1.2 million Gold Lotto win in July 2006, a $1 million Gold Lotto Superdraw win in July 2010 and two wins within the same week in February 2011 - a $5 million Oz Lotto and a $722,988 Gold Lotto win. Mrs Mulla said she had been inundated with Facebook messages and phone calls last Wednesday from people checking to see if their ticket was the lucky winner. “Obviously everyone was interested to know if it was them, so all day long we were checking people’s tickets,” she said. It took until lunchtime that day for Golden Casket to tell the lucky farmer his life-changing news, after he finally answered the phone following a busy morning in his paddock. “Are you serious? Jesus! I’m shocked actually, I just can’t believe it. I never
thought this would happen to me,” he said through tears of joy. “My wife was patting me on the back trying to calm me down. “When I heard there was a winner in Mareeba, I was going to go check my ticket but I thought nah it’s impossible that it’s me. I’d never win.” The man, in his 50s, said he wanted to help his children and family buy a house with his winnings and “go for a
little cruise. I really get into my cars too, so now I can buy the ute I always dreamt of,” he added. “I’m a hard worker so I won’t retire because you got to keep doing something otherwise you go mad.” The man, who wished to remain anonymous, is joined by a fellow $15 million Oz Lotto winner who purchased a ticket in the Perth suburb of Carlisle last week.

EXHIBITORS are snapping up sites fast at Kerribee Park as Rotary FNQ Field Days makes its return to Mareeba. Less than five per cent of stage one ex-
hibitor sites are left with demand continuing to surge for the Far North’s biggest agricultural show. Rotary FNQ Field Days chair Pauline
Spackman was thrilled with the level of interest in North Queensland’s largest agricultural exhibition, which is this year running with the theme “Leading the Way”. “Straight after we released stage one, within three or four days we had taken $237,000 worth of bookings,” she said. “It’s just kept growing.” Another 83 exhibitor sites will be made available under stage two, to be released later this month, while another 38 sites are planned for stage three. That will add to the separate 30 market stalls, 28 cattle stalls and 12 “inventors sites” at Field Days this year. Aspiring inventors will demonstrate their ideas for practical farm and home products to judges at the North Queensland Register Inventors Contest. The contest has fielded some incredibly innovative entries over the years, including the “Rescue Swag” by Mareeba woman Tracey Beikoff, who featured on
television program Shark Tank in 2015. Mrs Spackman said the move from two to three days would also give exhibitors and those attending more time to see what was on offer. “All the exhibitors are happy we’re doing three days, we’ve had really positive feedback,” she said. “A lot of them come from afar and it takes a lot of time to organise their displays. They’re anticipating it will help to spread the crowds out and draw more interest.” About 18,000 people passed through the gates at Rotary FNQ Field Days in 2015, with all indications pointing to a repeat of that number. Crowd favourites such as the popular Rotary John Deere Tractor Pull and Vintage Static Tractor Display will also make their return this year. That will be in addition to a new event, the Lawn Mower Pull. Field Days will be held on May 24, 25 and 26, 2017.

Health service denies hospital in crisis FROM Page 1
The health service has denied rumours Mareeba Hospital’s outpatient services and chronic disease unit are closing down.
A spokeswoman for State Health Minister Cameron Dick’s office also denied the hospital was planning to cut staff or services. Inpatient figures for the month of January at Mareeba Hospital stood at 547 admissions, while outpatient figures tallied 1007 attendances. By contrast, Atherton hospital’s inpatient numbers for the same month were 592 admissions and 762 outpatient attendances. A level 3 hospital, Mareeba also provides specialist services including geriatrics, paediatrician consults, psychologist/neuro psychology, cardiology, general surgery consultation, and gynaecology and child and adult dental surgery. As revealed by The Express in November, Mareeba is already facing a doctor shortage due to an archaic rule that prevents overseas-trained doctors from working on the Tablelands. Both Mareeba and Atherton are hamstrung by the fact the area is not allowed to recruit overseas-trained GPs, due to the region not being classified as a “District of Workforce Shortage” (DWS) by the Federal Department of Health. The map considers coastal towns such as Port Douglas and Innisfail as places that qualify as a DWS and therefore would allow an overseas trained doctor to practice there, as well as access to the Medicare Benefits Scheme which enables bulk billing. Under the Federal Health Insurance Act 1973, overseas-trained GPs must practice in a DWS for 10 years before they can go elsewhere for work.
Mayor speaks out on land vote MAREEBA mayor Tom Gilmore has strongly defended council’s decision to retain its trusteeship over a parcel of land wanted by a developer to build a proposed $21 million shopping centre. In a statement provided to The Express, Cr Gilmore detailed the reasons behind council’s decision last month not to relinquish trusteeship of the 1128m2 block of State-owned land to Reedlodge Pty Ltd. “The question placed before council was whether we ought to retain the land for aged housing in response to an unsolicited request that we relinquish trusteeship of the land so that the State might then transfer the land to private ownership,” he said. “Our response on both occasions was that we did not support the sale of the land and wished for it to be retained for aged housing. “This land is a public asset and this request does not fall within the ordinary definition of the marketplace, in so far as it is not an arms’ length transaction between a willing buyer and a willing seller.” Cr Gilmore said he was concerned the transfer of “land from its gazetted purpose to private ownership without verifiable justification for that action might raise questions of
propriety”. “The Mareeba Shire Council has been diligent in attempting to establish the veracity of claims made by the proponent of the project. Due to the apparent reluctance of the application to provide information requested by council, council had no alternative other than to seek information under the Right to Information Act,” he said. “These applications were frustrated and have to date not provided the information required as a result of ‘third party’ objection. “We were asked to simply take the proponent’s word that their prospective tenant’s demands required this land.” Reedlodge has argued it requires the 1128m2 block to house its planned anchor tenant, a major supermarket chain. But Cr Gilmore said Reedlodge “refused to inform” council of the identity of the tenant and failed to justify why the developer could not build on their existing 12,403m2 of land located on the old Rankine Sawmill site. Reedlodge previously had two successful applications for shopping centres with council on their existing site, with the first overturned in the planning court on a technicality and the second being allowed to lapse.
“If council and the community are to lose land set aside to provide for our aged citizens, a compelling and fully justified argument must be on public record,” Cr Gimore said. “Currently, there is no application before council for a shopping centre or any other development on the proponent’s land.” Cr Gilmore said there was “no impediment” to Reedlodge submitting an application to council to build a shopping centre on their existing land, and it would have council support as it is currently zoned for that kind of development. “Council welcomes development in the Shire and has support numerous developments over the last two years,” he said. “As trustee of public land, the Mareeba Shire Council has the authority to determine the future use of this land and bears the responsibility of, at all times, following the strictest rules of probity and professionalism, as expected by the community. “It cannot make a decision to dispose of such land without full transparency and justification which would withstand the strictest of public scrutiny.”

Tablelands remembers national servicemen “He was not just my brother, but my best friend.” With those heartfelt words, Mareeba man Doug Dayes gave an insight into just how much his late older brother and former national serviceman Rod meant to him. Mr Dayes was one of dozens of family members who paid tribute to their loved ones at a special dedication ceremony held at Rocky Creek War Memorial’s Tableland National Serviceman’s Shelter last Sunday. Nine new plaques carrying the names of Tablelands men who served under Australia’s first national service scheme between 1951 and 1959 were unveiled at the shelter, adding to the existing 12 already there. The event was held in advance of yesterday’s annual National Serviceman’s Day. Mr Dayes, whose other brother Edward’s service was also immortalised on a plaque on Sunday, said it was an incredibly proud moment for him and his family. “It is an honour and those plaques are something that will always be there,” he said. “We became very close as we got older, it’s just a shame they went before their time. “We can’t let those people be completely forgotten.” Rod Dayes passed away in 1993 while Edward Dayes died in 2008.
As the names of the servicemen being honoured were read out, family members were called up by National Servicemen’s Association Tablelands Branch president John Hardy to say a few words in tribute to their late loved ones. While none of the national servicemen under the 1951-59 scheme saw active service, every man who served in the regular Army was required to complete 98 days of training followed by 78 days in their local Citizen Military Forces (reserve) unit. Some of those servicemen, including those from the Tablelands, would go on to serve with distinction in their local reserve unit over the following decades. A second national service scheme was run between 1964 and 1972, with 63,000 20-year-old men called up to serve in the Army. 35,000 of those undertook alternate service in the Citizen Military Forces while 212 died while serving in Borneo and Vietnam. National Servicemen’s Association Tablelands Branch patron Ray Byrnes enlightened the crowd with his own experience of being called up to serve, while Vietnam veteran and army medic Dale McCarthy detailed how national service set him up for a life in the emergency services. “With national service, people

didn’t have a choice. They got called up and that was basically it,” Mr McCarthy said. “It’s good to see people now recognising the service of these guys.” The stirring words of padre Mick Grant gave a fitting conclusion to what was an emotional day for all involved. “This ceremony is our chance to honour those national servicemen from our local area who were willing to stand up and do their duty,” he said. “Let us remember, before God, and commend to his keeping, those of our comrades who have gone before us – those who we knew and those whose memories we treasure.”

MAREEBA’S resident bat colony is staying put for the time being as council waits on young flying foxes to grow up. Council officers are still waiting to move on the bats at Basalt Gully with noise generated by non-lethal Bird Frite cartridges after an initial attempt was called off for last month due to the discovery of young flying foxes in the colony. Officers have since been inspecting the colony daily, which is part of council reserve land on the corner of Stewart and Rankin streets and sits across from Mareeba Community Kindergarten. The colony at Basalt Gully, which consists of spectacled and little red flying foxes, has been a growing and constant menace for Mareeba Community Kindergarten since April last year, causing unwanted noise, smell and a possible health risk to children. The spectacled flying fox is officially listed as a vulnerable species, with infected bats able to give humans the lifethreatening Australian Bat Lyssavirus (ABL) by scratching or biting. “Council will continue to assess the situation and seek advice from our bat
expert and attempt to disperse the bats as soon as we can,” a spokesman said. “Council officers have been keeping the Mareeba Community Kindergarten informed of our actions. The kindergarten has been very understanding of the situation.” If eventually cleared to disperse the bats, officers will use Bird Frite cartridges likely to be fired from a gas gun. The kindergarten started a paper petition around October last year, urging the State Government to take action against the bats. It attracted more than 100 signatures from supporters, parents and local businesses. That was followed by an online petition a few weeks later asking council to take action, which can only operate within strict guidelines set by the State Department of Environment and Heritage Protection’s Code of Practice. Part of those guidelines prohibit council taking action to disperse the colony until its young flying foxes are old enough to fly independently. Council continues to monitor the bats.

WORK has started on Ravenshoe’s muchneeded $5 million Wastewater Treatment Plant. Preliminary on-site surveying works were carried out earlier this month, with Brisbane-based firm BMD Constructions being awarded the tender to upgrade the existing treatment plant. BMD, who have an office in Cairns, will need to comply with the negotiated draft licence, specifically effluent quality and hydraulic flows, as well as future proof the infrastructure for the growing region. The scope of works involves the design and construction of an upgraded
treatment plant to a capacity of 1300 equivalent persons. Works will include construction of concrete structures, an access road and underground pipework, installation, testing and commissioning of various mechanical and electrical items and demolition of obsolete items and structures. The project is expected to complete by the end of 2017, finally replacing Ravenshoe’s ailing sewage treatment plant which was first built in 1960. The new treatment plant is jointly funded between council and the State Government’s Building our Regions program, who each tipped in $2.5 million.

Paronella defends Priors Creek plan TABLELANDS mayor Joe Paronella has hit back at claims a retail and accommodation space proposed for Priors Creek would turn the area into a concrete jungle. Cr Paronella disagreed with Atherton Lions Club’s Priors Creek Committee chairman Terry Clark that the retail and accommodation space detailed in council’s draft master plan for Priors Creek was unnecessary and detracted from the community feel of the area. “Contrary to a concrete jungle, we envisage a family oriented mixed use and leisure area which enhances the natural environment, builds on the existing rail trail and bike related activities on the site and creates opportunities for commercial development that will draw users to the site and support future growth,” he said. “The region currently needs a quality, multi-bed accommodation option to draw major events. It also needs to plan for the future development of Atherton as a major retail hub of

the region and to avoid the fragmentation resulting in out of centre development.” The Lions Club has put forward their own proposal for Priors Creek, which deletes the retail and accommodation space, instead featuring more botanic gardens, on top of those proposed by council, and other community facilities. Mr Clark also took issue with a proposed link road going through the eastern side of the precinct, arguing it made the area “dangerous to our children visiting and using the parkland”. But Cr Paronella said the link road was necessary for “easy access to the site”, particularly for the disabled and elderly, and follows a similar approach to that taken in the Cairns CBD’s City Place and Williams Esplanade along Palm Cove. “The vehicle access and the intensification of use would bring people down to the area and increase the opportunity for passive surveil-
lance,” he said. “A principle of good urban design is to use passive surveillance to improve actual and perceived safety. In the absence of such surveillance, open spaces are often underutilised and provide opportunities for anti-social behaviour.” Cr Paronella also pointed to council’s current online survey which showed 70 per cent of respondents so far supported “a pedestrian and vehicular access linking the Silo Shopping Centre and Vernon Street, and Vernon Street to Jack Street”. Fruit helps chemo patients A berry which helps temporarily restore the tastebuds of cancer sufferers could be growing in your backyard. Daintree mangosteen farmer Chris Beckwith almost threw out his only “Miracle Fruit” tree about six weeks ago before a friend of his from the Rare Fruits Association told him of its benefits to chemotherapy patients. After doing some research, Mr Beckwith discovered that the fruit had been proven to temporarily restore the tastebuds of chemo patients. A 2009 study published by Miami’s Mount Sinai Medical Center found that the fruit contains a natural sugar substitute called miraculin, which conceals the metallic taste experienced by chemotherapy patients and instead intensifies the natural flavours of the food being consumed. Mr Beckwith promptly sent some of the berries to a friend of
his in Sydney who was suffering from leukaemia and was amazed by the results. “He hadn’t eaten properly for months…And after we sent down the berries to him, he’s been for dinner every single night,” he said. “It’s totally changed his life.” Mr Beckwith said after consuming Miracle Fruit, a chemo patient’s tastebuds could be restored for anywhere between half-an-hour to two hours depending on the type of food eaten. “If you’re eating a lot of hot food, it won’t last as long,” he said. The fruit tree, native to Ghana, is sold in about 10 nurseries from Darwin down to Byron Bay and thrives in both sub-tropical and tropical climates. But Mr Beckwith, who now has 25 Miracle Trees growing on his property, said it was entirely possible Far North residents unknowingly had the fruit growing in their backyards.

“So many people have them, we know people who have them down near Tully and Cairns,” he said. “If someone has one or they know someone who has one, share the berries around because they help people.” Mr Beckwith said the berries, which have little nutritional value, should be stored in a freezer in bags of about six at a time as they quickly go off once picked from the tree. “Once they’re picked, the miraculin, which revives the tastebuds, breaks down so they won’t be any good after a couple of days,” he said. “They can last in a freezer up to one month or even two months, I’m told.” Mr Beckwith added that the berries should be picked with the stem to preserve them longer. For more information on Miracle Fruit, search for the “Miracle Fruit Trees Australia” page on Facebook.

Region mourns Noeline THE Far Northern community is in mourning after former candidate for Kennedy Noeline Ikin lost her battle with cancer last Saturday. The mum-of-three and former Etheridge Shire councillor was diagnosed with a brain tumour in late 2015, choosing not to recontest last year’s Federal election despite coming painstakingly close to winning the seat in 2013. In a heartfelt post made on social media, Hinchinbrook MP and friend of Ms Ikin, Andrew Cripps, said North Queensland had lost “one of its favourite daughters”. “This is a truly devastating loss,” he wrote. “Cancer is an insidious and cruel disease. Since being diagnosed
with a brain tumour in late 2015, Noeline has continued to demonstrate the inspiring optimism and fighting spirit she had become renowned for in her public life. “I came to know and respect Noeline in 2012 when she became the LNP candidate for Kennedy ahead of the 2013 federal election. We all remember her positive, energetic campaign that saw her win the popular vote, but lose very narrowly on preferences. “Noeline was a wonderful, generous and genuine friend. Our sadness will be deep and enduring. May God bless you, Noeline. You won’t be forgotten and you will be missed.”

Scouts celebrate MAREEBA Scout Group will pay tribute to their organisation’s legendary founder at a special event next Sunday. Almost 60 local joeys, cubs, venturers and senior scout members will converge on Mary Andrews Park for a belated celebration of “Founder’s Day”, which marks the February 22 birthdays of Scouts founder Lord Robert Baden-Powell and his wife, Lady Baden-Powell. Mareeba Scout Group leader Cass Craven said the day was important for scout groups worldwide, which would be celebrated locally with a picnic, games and the reading of a letter left by Lord BadenPowell before he died outlining the principles of scouting. “It highlighted what he thought were important skills and values to have,” she said. “That sums up what he intended for Scouts and how proud he was that the scouting movement had
followed in that direction. “We’ve got a couple of new leaders so we’ll be doing their investitures on the day, and there are a number of new kids that have started so we’ll probably do a group investiture for different sections.” The scout group has also attracted new members after strong interest during their sign-one day earlier this month. “We had about six new families come for a visit, which was very successful,” Mrs Craven said. “Most of those families had two kids so it was a boost for the numbers.” Mareeba Scout Group secretary Melisa Butcher said having a local scout group gave kids a chance to get away from technology and learn traditional bushcraft skills, independence and self-reliance. “It gives kids that opportunity to still be physically active while learning hands-on skills that otherwise wouldn’t be done at home,” she said.
Late trading feedback wanted THE Mareeba Chamber of Commerce wants local businesses to have their say on whether late night trading would be viable in town. The Chamber will host a forum at the Mareeba Heritage Centre next Monday to get feedback from local business owners as part of their “Spend a Redback – Shop Local Mareeba” campaign. The Chamber is hoping to support extended trading hours on the last Thursday night of each month to help reinstate Mareeba as a retail
hub, retaining the after-5pm workers and giving them a reason to stay in town. Details to be discussed at the forum include whether retailers would stay open until 8pm or 9pm, and special promotions that could be offered to attract late night shoppers into town. If there is strong enough interest for late night trading, the Chamber would coordinate a town-wide flyer drop with a map and focus on each business participating and provide
free marketing materials as they become available to those businesses already registered with the Spend a Redback campaign, along with other marketing campaigns. The forum will be held from 5:30pm to 6:30pm on February 20 at the Mareeba Heritage Centre. Business owners interested in attending can call Janet Greenwood on 4092 6050 or email admin@mareebachamber.com.au All local businesses are encouraged to attend.

Flat rate to fund council water upgrades TABLELANDS Regional Council’s newly introduced flat water rate is set to help fund water infrastructure upgrades across the shire. Since July 1, all Tablelands Shire residents have been charged $466 a year for water access and 56 cents per kilolitre for water used. The flat rate replaces council’s previous three-tiered water usage system. But Atherton, Walkamin and Tinaroo Park residents on the previous Tier 1 water usage charge (maximum 400 kilolitres) have been slugged an extra 38.17 cents per kilolitre since the new single rate came in. Mt Garnet, Herberton, Ravenshoe and Millstream residents have stumped up an extra 49.62 cents per kilolitre compared to their previous Tier 1 usage charge, where the maximum allowed was 900 kilolitres. Malanda, Millaa Millaa and Yungaburra residents also copped an increase of 44.51 cents per kilolitre, where the maximum allowed was 500 kilolitres. Under the new flat rate, TRC residents formerly on the bigger Tier 2 water usage charge received a smaller increase than residents on the old Tier 1 charge, while those who were on a Tier 3 charge had a reduction in their water rate under the new system. Some residents will gain savings out of their water access charge, with Herberton households saving $239.70 compared to their previous charge of $705.70 in 2015/16. With the average household using 300 kilolitres of water a year, this equates to $168 for annual water usage.
www.theexpressnewspaper.com.au
Tablelands mayor Joe Paronella said the flat rate meant smaller towns in the shire will now be able to receive infrastructure upgrades without the burden of costs only spread amongst a small user base. “We are aware of quality and reliability upgrades needed to water infrastructure servicing Millstream, Cassowary and Bellview schemes,” he said. “Instead of providing an upgrade to individual supplies, we are looking at undertaking a consolidated upgrade incorporating Ravenshoe to better service these communities. “Funding is currently being sought to prepare a detailed plan for an integrated upgrade of the four supply schemes.” Water quality issues in Ravenshoe and surrounding areas have been plagued by ageing infrastructure. That means wet weather events influence the water quality because of turbidity or discolouration of the source water, with little of the turbidity able to be removed. “Regular and extensive testing is carried out to ensure we deliver water which meets the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines to protect consumers,” Cr Paronella said. “If our testing reveals water quality deteriorating below the required standard then TRC is required by legislation to issue boil water notices until the water quality improves.” “Realistically, new water infrastructure for Millstream, Cassowary, Bellview and Ravenshoe schemes is still a few years away.”
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
The Express reserves the right to edit letters
Making sense of centre
Mareeba needs to bounce back
Well here's something that I never thought would happen, I'm agreeing with Barry Simpson. He wrote great letter in The Express (8/2) regarding the Reedlodge shopping centre. I well realise I'm far from being the sharpest chisel in the box, but unless there is some sinister underlying reason that only three councillors and the Mayor know about, I and most other residents of Mareeba cannot see why they are blocking the Reedlodge application for land. I can only see common sense in keeping local shoppers in the town, as well as attracting shoppers from other areas that will no doubt frequent existing shops while they are here. Not only that a town known for vibrant shopping will attract more residents Of course the alternative is for the Mareeba Shire Council to erect a sign on the Atherton side of the Jackaroo Motel with an arrow pointing to Atherton saying shopping, and another sign at the Barron Bridge pointing to Cairns saying “Shopping”. That should keep Mareeba in the back blocks for a few more years. Ron Kane, Mareeba
I write in support of Mr Barry Simpson’s letter (The Express, 8/2) and would at the same time congratulate Billy Gordon MP for supporting the proposed development. The attitude of some council members to development appears to be somewhat parochial. It would be nice to have another shopping centre in Mareeba and even if this does not eventuate anything would be better than seeing the land in question being left as it is. Any development on this block would provide employment for locals and would broaden the tax base of council. Mareeba appears to be a town in decline with a lot of the buildings in the main street looking well past their use by date. Also the ever opening and closing of business ventures could perhaps indicate that owners are perhaps looking for high rental returns only. The closing of the Suncorp Bank branch in Mareeba I hope, is not indicative of this decline. I wonder which business will be the next to close or what services will be terminated? New on the Rising Sun screen this week is the THE GREAT WALL. Starring Matt Damon in an exciting adventure set in one of the great wonders of the world – China's Great Wall. FIFTY SHADES DARKER also continues for another great week.
THE GREAT WALL
When a mercenary warrior (Matt Damon) is imprisoned within the Great Wall, he discovers the mystery behind one of the greatest wonders of the world. As wave after wave of marauding beasts besiege the massive structure, his quest for fortune turns into a journey toward heroism as he joins a huge army of elite warriors to confront the unimaginable and seemingly unstoppable force. Review Rotten Tomatoes: Simultaneously futuristic and historic, the visual spectacle carries the film, while Zhang manages to include plenty of promised "Chinese elements", including a beautiful shot of traditional sky lanterns at one character's funeral.

ATHERTON HOCKEY SIGN ON Presidents message
with Carrie De Brueys
Major sponsors of the “ALL STAR” team... ...and proudly supporting Hockey on the Tablelands. Lawson Street, Tolga Phone 4095 4104
ATHERTON Tablelands Hockey Association's new President Carrie De Brueys and Vice President Pamela Clearwater are very excited to be on the verge of the 2017 season. The Atherton hockey family is very supportive and we love introducing new players to the game. We urge those who haven't picked up a stick for a few years, or even twenty years, to get into hockey. There is plenty of support and assistance for all ages, stages and abilities. If you're aged from five to 105, we want you. We have a Minkies format for our littlies (under 10's) where they learn skills and the rules and as they improve, transition to full games towards the end of year. Last year we had a mixed Division One and Division Two for our 11 to 16 year olds, and with the help of coaches we equalized teams to create an even comp. We also have an open (16 years +) comp for ladies and men and we are always looking for new players in these divisions. We had a strong Ladies Vets competition for many years (aged over 35yrs), and hope this year to encourage more players to strengthen our existing teams and divisions. Divisions for this year will be finalised once we have all registrations in. Last year we introduced our Tableland Tomahawks to the Cairns hockey competition. Our U18 girls and boys, with the help of Emerson's Bus Company, traveled down every Friday night to compete. We certainly held our own with the boys making the semi-final and the girls team competing in the finals. It was a great achievement
Shane Knuth
for their first year. This year, we are excited to enter two girls’ teams and a boys’ team competing in the competition. The Tomahawk girls team has just returned from a tour of Melbourne, playing against clubs from the area. We also have a Ladies veteran team “Oz Magic”, competing in Auckland in the World Masters Games in April. So if you're interested in developing your skills to a higher level, then Atherton Hockey can help you achieve this. Just last year, we had three players Ben Lowe, Abi Toshach and Luke Howard - who were selected and played in Queensland teams around the country. Not bad for a little club. We have a great team of volunteers, from the people who prepare and care for the fields: thee coaches, managers, umpires, parents, wonderful canteen people and committee members. They all come together to make this happen. Hockey is competitive, but more importantly, we want people to have fun, improve their fitness, make friends and enjoy the social aspects of team sport and being part of a community. Discipline, being part of a team, social skills and motor skills are skills that are practiced and developed with physical activity. Team sports encourage cooperation and respect for others. What a great foundation. The great thing about hockey is it's at the same place and time each week. Games are played at Loder Park, Atherton, with regular time-slots for all grades. Once you pay your fees there are no ongoing costs each week. This Saturday, we have our highly anticipated City vs Country event where
Stingers Hockey Club from Cairns brings a range of teams up to compete against us for a day of fun and competition. Get along and enjoy the day. Our Sign-On Day for the 2017 season will be on Sunday, from 10am to 1pm, however this year we are introducing an online registration and payment system for all players. This can be done at any time. We will be there on the day to assist people through the process if they are new to hockey. We invite all captains and coaches to attend on the day to submit their teams, but if you don’t have a team, don’t fear, we will find you one. The first round of hockey will start on Saturday, March 11.
Member for Dalrymple My congratulations to the committee and organisers of Atherton Hockey for their ongoing commitment in providing young children and adults an outlet for healthy minds and bodies. It is a credit to all involved.

ATHERTON HOCKEY SIGN ON Country takes on city The city verses country rivalry in hockey comes to life this Saturday at Atherton’s Loder Park as the Cairns Stingers take on the Atherton Tableland Hockey Association. As there are large numbers of Atherton players playing on the AstroTurf of the Cairns hockey fields both clubs take advantage of getting together in the pre-season to compete against one another in a warm up for the coming season. Atherton players who play in the Cairns competition are invited back to their original club, similar to State of Origin and play somewhat heated games against their city counterparts. This Saturday will see the competition start at 10am where there will be a vets/social ladies game, an S1 and S2 girls match , men’s under 18 and an oldies men’s six a side matchup. A full day of hockey will be on offer to spectators with the clubs canteen providing hot food and cold drinks on the day.

Big weekend for Roosters
Gators continue winning form
ATHERTON’s Roosters Stadium will host a first-grade double header in a trial match extravaganza this Saturday night. Playing in A-grade pre-season trials are CDRL clubs the Atherton Roosters, Southern Suburbs and premiers Ivanhoes, while Townsville Norths will also appear. The Roosters will go up against Ivanhoes and coach Dean Howard said he will name a twenty member Roosters squad for the home trial. “I will give the boys who have been putting in the effort at pre-season training the first choice and we will have a few young debutantes in the side,” Howard said. “There is a couple of new faces with us and we have a couple of late signings yet to arrive.” One new signing for the Roosters is former Mareeba Gladiator and Logan Brothers prop forward Paul Alofi, who made the move after meeting Howard. “I was talking to Dean earlier this year and he said the Roosters were in the market for a few prop forwards and asked me if I would be keen,” Alofi said. “I had a good think about it and decided a change would be good. The Roosters had a strong season last year and I am excited to be part of 2017.” Alofi sat out last season and said he was feeling fresh and looking forward to playing again. The new-look Roosters Under 19 side are also playing on Saturday against Ivanhoes. A local derby will follow for the Roosters’ A-grade side when the face up against the Gladiators in Mareeba on February 25. Match times: 4pm: Under 19 – Roosters vs Ivanhoes. 5.45pm: A-grade – Townsville Norths vs Southern Suburbs. 7.30pm: A-grade – Roosters vs Ivanhoes.
A WINNING feeling has taken over the Mareeba Gladiators as the A-grade notched their second trial match win on the trot against Mossman-Port Douglas last weekend. The Gators were simply too good for a physical Sharks outfit, triumphing 42-22 in front of a vocal home crowd at the Mossman Showgrounds. Mareeba player-coach Tye Ingebrigtsen said the win helped build momentum after their 26-10 victory against the Northern Pride Under 20s in Innisfail the week before. “I’m impressed with how quickly it’s all coming together,” he said. “It’s a hard job to go down to Mossman. They had a very good lineup and were very physical, but our boys just kept going through the whole 80 minutes.” Lock Dan Moevoa was a standout for the Gators on the night, winning

Atherton in must-win two day match Atherton kicked off their last home game of the season at Loder Park on Saturday in a two-day match against United. With only 0.13 points separating the teams on the ladder, it's a must win for both to secure a chance of a spot in the semi’s. United won the toss and sent Atherton in to bat. Openers Gerard Fox and Paul Nasser got off to a steady start on a slow wicket, with Foxy going on to score 77 runs to have Atherton 2-120 at the halfway mark. Paul Nasser (24), Peter Sceresini (26) and Caleb Constant on 30, got good starts for Atherton, but the team fell well short of their target to finish on 198. Time allowed for one over to be bowled and United will now resume 0-4 next Saturday.
Batsman Gerard Fox led the way for Atherton with 77 runs.
with Mareeba winning the toss and choosing to field, but they soon recovered to finish on 6/134 off 32 overs. Batsman Zac Myrteza and Ben Jones got off to a shaky, but solid start and had Mareeba 0/67, before both retired off their 50 balls. Zac and Ben returned to the crease needing 20 runs from 3 overs, but unfortunately fell short, with Mareeba finishing all out for 120. The Under 12’s took on Atherton in a close game, only going down by 25 runs. Mareeba made 8/125 with Angus Campman on 30 and Jake Bombardieri with 23 – but Atherton were too strong at the end to score 4/149. The young Mareeba under 10’s had a win against Atherton – 5/49

Mareeba Cricket weekend wrap IT was a weekend of mixed results for Mareeba Cricket. The under 16 boys showed their strength with a win against the undefeated, top of the table United. After winning the toss Mareeba’s top order got off to a great start with Kobe Martin making 28 and Chris Adams 42. Braydon Olufson finished the Mareeba innings with the top score of 44, to get the boys to 182. United came out and attacked early, but the bowlers fought back with Luke Russo getting 2/25 and Liam Bombardieri 2/20 – some great fielding also helped get Mareeba home to win by 17 runs. The under 14 Mareeba boys travelled to Trinity Beach for a one-day game against Barron. Barron looked to be in trouble
man of the match, while co-captain Maddie Oosen, Clint Posselt and Sonny Rea ran in two-tries each. “Dan was sensational through the middle,” Ingebrigtsen said. “I thought Joey Burchell was really good at the back as well.” But Ingebrigtsen said he wanted to fix his side’s leaky defence ahead of their home clash with the Atherton Roosters on February 25. “We’ve got a lot of room to improve. We let in 22 points against Mossman and realistically, that’s not good enough,” he said. “We’ve got to work on our defending, keeping it tight around the ruck. Our fitness will get better as the year goes on, but that’s definitely another key component we need to work on. “We want to work on getting our bodies right against Atherton.”
to 5/47. The ladies ‘T20 Lacy Bra Cup’ kicked off in Mareeba at the weekend with almost 70 ladies taking part. The first Sunday saw lots of smiles, runs and some pretty spectacular fielding on display. At Borzi Park the Maiden Overs defeated Scared Hitless 125 to 117, with players player being awarded to Janelle Smithwick. While at Firth Park the Detention Dodgers defeated Miss Hits 116 to 79, with players player awarded to Lisa Fitzsimmons and in the last game of the day the Fine Legs defeated Atherton Heat 109 to 88, with Atherton’s Abby Toshach awarded players player. The ladies will do it all again this Sunday and everyone is invited to come along.
