King of the North By Michael Serenc
A SEPARATE state of North Queensland has again stirred the passions of conservative politicians, tired of people being neglected by the South-East. Northern Australia minister Matt Canavan raised the age-old issue during an address to the Queensland Media Club last Wednesday, but con-
ceded the dream was a while away from becoming reality. “It’s something that’s got to be driven by the people of North Queensland,” he said. “But given it’s an inherent part of our constitution, it was certainly foreshadowed by our founding fathers…it’s probably something that will happen.” While conceding the issue divided North
Queenslanders, Senator Canavan said separate statehood was worth having a debate about. “It’s important that the people of North Queensland have a fair say about what happens in North Queensland,” he said. “I think sometimes the State Government in Brisbane doesn’t listen so much at the moment to the North, and that was demonstrated on issues like the vegetation laws debate.
“Sometimes we do struggle to have those views heard when we’re so far away.” Dalrymple MP Shane Knuth fully supported a new North Queensland state, with Katter’s Australian Party (KAP) putting forward a motion to split the state in Parliament last month.

Losing hair with care FIVE Mareeba ladies will sacrifice their luscious locks to boost the funds of cancer charities. Tracey O’Shea, Fiona Parker, Margaret and Debbie Wemyss and Michelle Bryce will all brave the shave this Friday night at the Mareeba RSL’s “Ladies Night Out” event, hoping to raise more than $4000 for cancer support and research in the process. “Shaving our heads is nothing compared to what cancer patients are forced to endure,” Mrs O’Shea, RSL functions manager, said. “We have known a lot of people who have survived or lost their battle with cancer, which is why we decided we would do this.”
The ladies have been busy fundraising since June. Kiarra O’Shea, 11, and Carmen Gutchen-Gela will also be bravely chopping off their long pony tails on the night, raising money for Australia Alopecia Areata Foundation. Third-time shave veteran Margaret Wemyss said there was a simple reason why she continued to participate. “It’s only hair and it will grow back,” she said. “I do it to help people and raise money.” The annual event continues to grow and organisers are hoping for a big turnout on Friday night. “There will be heaps of fun

and entertainment on the night,” Mrs O’Shea said. In addition to the shave off, the night will also feature live entertainment with local singer Shandell Tosoni, pop-up stalls, fashion parades and lots of laughs. Doors open at 6pm for a 6.30pm start, with the $10 per person entry going to Cancer
Council Queensland and “Team Tracey”. Men and the general public are welcome to come in for the shave at around 8pm with a $10 entry fee still applicable. Bookings can be made by calling the RSL on 4092 1396 or on the night. Residents wishing to make a direct donation can also do so through Mareeba RSL.

AN informative speech with bouts of humour has seen a Mareeba youngster awarded the 2016 Rotary Youth speaker of the year. Mareeba State Primary School’s Daniel Penn, 11, presented a four minute talk on “Table manners around the world” at last Thursday night’s Mareeba Rotary Youth Speaks competition. Each year, students from schools across the district are invited to participate in the public speaking event.
Nine students from five local primary schools participated in this year’s event, where they each presented a four minute talk on a topic of their choice. Mareeba Rotary Director of Youth Services Lenore Wyatt said she was always encouraged when listening to the young students. “All the participants were amazing tonight, their passion for their topic shone through,” she said. “It brings out their confidence and gives

them that much-needed exposure in front of an audience.” Daniel said he thought entering would be fun and interesting, but “never expected to win”. The judges, from the local Toastmasters Club, had a hard time choosing a winner and were very impressed by the confidence and character the participants showed while delivering their speeches, as well as the range of topics chosen.
Since 1998, hundreds of local students have taken part in the annual contest which has proven useful to students wanting to gain further confidence in public speaking as they progress to higher education. For most, this was their first time speaking in front of their peers and a large audience. The schools represented were Mareeba State School, Biboohra State School, St Thomas’s Mareeba and St Anthony’s Dimbulah and Mt Molloy State School.

‘This is a very serious question’ FROM Page 1 The motion was defeated 82-3 with only independent Cairns MP Rob Pyne, Mr Knuth and fellow KAP MP Robbie Katter supporting it. “This is not a new argument, this has been going on since the 1800s,” Mr Knuth said. “Obviously, when it comes to decisionmaking, the majority of the South-East corner’s MPs decide what is in the best interests of North Queensland.
“And what may suit Brisbane does not suit places like the Atherton Tablelands.” Mr Knuth said he believed there was a mood for change amongst North Queenslanders, who were tired of being ignored by politicians in the South-East. “What a separate state will do is give selfgovernance and self-determination,” he said. “At this present moment we’ve got one senator representing North Queensland in Federal Parliament while Tasmania has 12.”
Mr Knuth said while the region generated the majority of Queensland’s wealth but was crying out for investment. “We have not seen a major infrastructure project for over 30 years,” he said. But Mareeba Chamber of Commerce president Joe Moro poured cold water on the idea of a separate state, saying the proposal had little merit. “No-one’s convinced me of what the actual benefits will be,” he said. “I’ll keep an open mind on the matter but I
personally don’t support it.” Mr Moro said he had yet to hear a “strong argument” with “real facts” about creating a North Queensland state, other than parochialism. “This is a very serious question and I think we need to look at the benefits versus the risks,” he said. “I think the people pushing this need to put much more on the table. “There’s a lot of other, more important issues we need to deal with.”

Mine village gets revamp AS many as 240 mining workers could be housed at refurbished accommodation in Chillagoe. Opened last month, the new-look “Chillagoe Mine Village” will accommodate workers operating at the Mungana and King Vol mine sites. The village includes about 70 buildings with a large modern mess, recreation facilities and gymnasium, with the facility is close to Chillagoe’s business centre. Auctus Resources acquired the village site in December 2015 as part of its takeover of Atherton Resources Limited, with the refurbishment essentially completed within 56 days of Ausco Modular being awarded the contract. In addition, Auctus installed a new standby
power generator, refurbished the water and sewage treatment plants, and planted approximately 1500 shrubs and trees which surround the village. Northern Rise Village Services will run the facility. The opening of the village is a critical step in Auctus establishing its broader operations. That includes re-starting underground mining, and refurbishment and completion of the partially built process plant at Mungana (15kms west of Chillagoe), along with earthworks and drilling for a new underground mine at King Vol (20kms west of Mungana). Ore mining will re-start at Mungana from January next year, five years after the site was
shut down due to financial problems. By this time next year, Auctus hopes to have both Mungana and King Vol fully operational, employing more than 220 people. “It is with great pride that myself and my fellow directors have been able to breathe life back into the historically significant Mungana mining camp during such tough times in North Queensland,” Auctus Resources executive chairman Steve Murdoch said. “This will have involved an investment of over $175 million. From acquisition to start of mining, activities in nine short months reflect the determination and capability of the Chillagoe team and I look forward to the first concentrates leaving the site in a few months.”

Evelyn Hall seen better days THE former caretaker of Evelyn’s ageing hall has given his blessing for council to sell it off. Third-generation resident Bob Kelso, who lives next door to the hall, said there would be little resistance from the town’s dwindling population if the building was sold. “It’s sort of folded up from lack of interest and high insurance premiums,” he said. “In its heyday, I remember my old man said that on opening night in 1935 they had 500 people there. “They had a cricket pitch across the road and a tennis court next door – it was a real community hub back then.” The hall, about 80-years-old has been closed by council since March this year, with a hefty repair bill of $87,500 required to bring it up to scratch. While not hired by anyone in the last financial year, it has occasionally been used for illegal rave parties and is becoming a safety issue as the structure slowly degrades. Mr Kelso said while the hall itself was in decent condition, the attached kitchen was infested with termites. “I just can’t see the council justify keeping it at this stage because no-one uses it, that’s the problem,” he said. “The rural fire brigade would have one function a year at Christmas time to raise money, but at the last one we had four years ago, no-one turned up.” Council voted at their September 22 meeting to defer the proposed sale by tender of the hall until further community consultation was carried out. The closest hall to Evelyn is Ravenshoe Town Hall and The Mountains Institute, which are both 15km away. Council will make a final decision on the hall at a meeting in November. Members of the public who would like to submit their feedback on the hall can call 1300 362 242 or email info@trc.qld.gov.au
Work for the Dole sewing program supervisor Denise Marshall with some of the outfits made by participants.
Program helps jobless A UNIQUE Work for the Dole program is teaching jobseekers the lost art of sewing. Quality Innovation Training and Employment (QITE) has set up a “Sewing Centre” along Atherton’s main street where participants have been busy mending, tailoring and making a variety of outfits and manchester items for sale to the public. Sewing program supervisor Denise Marshall said participants started off with the basics before progressing on to more complex designs. “Mostly, it’s teaching them how to sew things like buttons, not getting too technical straight up because they’ve never done it before,” she said. “Knitting and crocheting is the same…Putting it all together, they can make blankets, beanies and read patterns. “They’re very basic, old skills which not
many people have anymore. It’s keeping that alive.” Ms Marshall said participants also learned a variety of skills and attributes along the way, including punctuality, confidence and dealing with customers. “Customer service is a big thing and you find it in every job,” she said. “And selling a product they’ve been involved in makes it a little easier for them.” The program, which has been going for about a year-and-a-half, initially operated out of QITE’s office but set up a shop at the end of July as it grew in popularity amongst participants. Program participant Luke Willis said he was excited to learn a new skill. “It’s certainly not hard and it’s a lovely atmosphere here,” he said.
“I do part-time work already but I still come here two days a week and you treat it like you’re going to work.” The program is federally funded through the Department of Employment’s jobactive program, which QITE is a part of. All money raised from the centre is donated to local charities, with the centre always happy to taken donations of material. The centre is located at the arcade next to Giddy’s Place at 46 Main St. QITE will host a “Bubbles and Bling” event at their Atherton office on October 27, showcasing the services offered through the organisation, including Work for the Dole. To book for this event call 4091 5800 or email jtrout@qite.com

Drunk driver a ‘disgrace’ THE Tablelands’ top cop has blasted a Kuranda man allegedly caught with a blood alcohol reading eight times the legal limit. Tablelands Patrol Group Inspector Roger Whyte said the incident was an “absolute disgrace” after the 22-year-old allegedly blew 0.400 when pulled over by police along the Kennedy Highway on the morning of October 1. “There are those out there that take the law into their own hands without thought for their own safety and other road users,” he said. “There are unfortunately too many drink drivers on our roads.” 0.400 is the maximum recorded limit of

roadside breathalysers, with that kind of blood alcohol limit known to be lethal. The man was taken to Mareeba Hospital by paramedics soon after being pulled over by police after experiencing a medical emergency due to his intoxication level. “I think the community do a wonderful job with obeying the road rules but there’s always a small percentage that choose to ignore them,” Insp Whyte said. “From my perspective, they need to have a hard look at themselves.” Insp Whyte urged any resident going out to drink alcohol to arrange for a designated driver or taxi home. Cairns Road Policing Unit acting officer
in charge, Acting Senior Sergeant Greg Rose, said any driver caught with such a high blood alcohol reading was horrifying. ““The ability of a driver to control a vehicle at that sort of reading is severely comprised. It is almost a fatal crash waiting to happen,” he said. “For someone to drive a vehicle when they have consumed that large amount of alcohol shows a blatant disregard for the road safety of other road users.” A specimen of blood was taken from the driver and has been sent for analysis and, pending results, he will appear in the Mareeba Magistrates Court in relation to the drink driving charge and a number of other traffic charges.

School asks ‘Are you OK?’ for mental health week MAREEBA State High School is going all out for mental health this week, with several activities designed to encourage students to speak up. Student council mentor and teacher Tim Ralph said students had thoroughly embraced Mental Health Awareness Week. “We’re trying to take the negative aspect out of mental health and the kids have talked a lot about removing the stigma associated with it,” he said. “This is our way of focusing on the positives rather than the negatives.”
The week, held as part of the town’s wider Mental Health Month, has already featured several activities so far. Students were able to take part in a fun and fitness session with PE staff on Monday, while on Tuesday, there was a $500 cheque presentation to Mareeba Men’s Shed, the showing of a mental health video produced by student Chau Truong and the unveiling of a wooden “Gratitude Tree” where students can carve out their own positive messages. The tree was built by school-based nurse Chris Gray and Margie Bestmann, who lost her
husband, Dr Mark Bestmann, earlier this year. Students also gained an insight into what mental health services are available to them via a mental health hub set up at the school. “The big thing we got out of Margie’s speech to the school earlier in the year is that it’s OK to not be OK and if you do need help there are people here to help you,” Mr Ralph said. The fun continues today with a crazy socks free dress day and the annual watermelon eating competition on Friday.

TEMPERS are expected to flare this week as authorities hold their first public meeting over Herberton’s controversial new fire station. Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) secretly bought a property at 38 Perkins St for the new station in August before letting neighbouring residents know of their intentions. Residents will be able to have their say over the station’s proposed location at a meeting this Sunday from 11am. The meeting will be held at the town’s existing fire station at 43 Grace St, with QFES Far Northern Region Acting Assistant Commissioner John Bolger to attend. A QFES spokesman said locals would be notified about the proposed site via “advertisements in multiple local newspapers and letters to the
adjoining and nearby landowners”. Public consultation officially began on Monday and will run through to October 28. But residents and Tablelands Regional Council will be powerless to stop the new fire station being built along Perkins St, with the QFES opting to go through the Ministerial Designation (MD) process. The MD process bypasses the regular council approval process and leaves a final decision on the site up to the State Government. The proposed $1.2 million station will include facilities for SES training and room for two fire trucks. After consultation finishes, public notification and community consultation is then sought, before the publication of a Final Assessment Report (FAR). The FAR is due for consideration
in November. The spokesman said QFES believed 38 Perkins St was the best site for the new fire station, but the organisation would “work with the community” to find an alternative if there was a significant public backlash. “At this time, QFES is focussing on the public consultation phase of this process, understanding that the newly acquired site at 38 Perkins St is considered to be strategically located within Herberton,” he said. “In addition, as Perkins St is a State-controlled road, the site will also enable effective access for firefighters to service the Herberton region.” Dalrymple MP Shane Knuth previously told The Express he wanted to get honest feedback from residents over the fire station.
Babacan starts new job at TRC TABLELANDS Regional Council’s new CEO has finally started. Hurriyet Babacan began her new role last Tuesday following council’s announcement in July that she had secured the top job. Ms Babacan’s appointment follows the departure of previous CEO Ian Church back in April. “It is an extremely exciting time for the organisation and this region, with Ms Babacan bringing a fresh leadership approach and a new set of skills to help guide organisational improvements for better community outcomes,” Tablelands mayor Joe Paronella said. “Ms Babacan has an open and collaborative style with an emphasis on collective responsibility. Her initial pri-
ority involves gathering input from across all tiers of the organisation. She will also help guide the formulation of a new Corporate Plan which reiterates the aspirations of councillors and the focus for our four-year term in local government.” Ms Babacan has held various strategic roles including Victorian Manager, Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet, Executive Director, Queensland Department of Premier and Cabinet, Foundation Director of the Cairns Institute, and Pro Vice Chancellor, Torrens University. She was also founding director of James Cook University’s Cairns Institute and was principal scientist in the securing of a $31 million grant to establish and lead a tropical water quality research program in Cairns.

Minister backs housing firm
GOOD MOVE: State Housing Minister Mick de Brenni, Mareeba Community Housing Company Manager Patricia Goldfinch and board member Helen Kindt.
STATE Housing Minister Mick de Brenni has given a ringing endorsement of a Mareeba real estate firm helping the less fortunate. In town for the official launch of Affordable Housing Limited Real Estate last Saturday night, Mr de Brenni said the concept proved the community housing sector could be innovative. “This launch marks the start of something really exciting happening in Mareeba and I know that the community housing sector right across Australia is looking at what’s happening here because we’re seeing real leadership,” he said. “I absolutely think finding new ways and new income streams that support the growth of affordable housing that community housing providers deliver to people in our community is very important.” The real estate firm is being run through Mareeba Community Housing Company (MCHC) and will provide affordable, one bedroom units for low income residents in Mareeba. Mr de Brenni said it was encouraging to see MCHC seek out its own properties for community housing rather than just rely on the government to provide it through the transfer of former public housing . “The community housing sector has an important role to play, the government-provided public housing sector has an important role to play but we both need to grow the number of homes that we can provide in this community and across the state,” he said. “And to do that, we’re going to need to come up with innovative strategies.” $1900 was raised on the night via an auction which will help kick start a trust where profits from the business will go for future investment.
DEDICATED: The Mareeba Community Housing Company team at Saturday night’s launch.

A RECYCLING trailer placed next to a Cooktown Creek will be taken away after repeatedly being misused by local residents. Rotting fish frames, maggots and dirty nappies have forced Cook Shire Council staff to remove the trailer, located at the corner of Poison Creek and Endeavour Valley roads. The trailer was supposed to give residents better access to recycling services for cardboard, paper, aluminium, plastic and glass containers. But council Parks and Waste Operations Manager Jim Doidge said people were consistently using the trailer to dump general waste.
“Not only is the trailer not meant for this waste, but the general waste also fouls the recyclables in the trailer and the whole load has to be taken to landfill rather than recycled,” he said. “The trailers are emptied weekly, and each week staff have found large quantities of general rubbish in with the recyclables, including fish scraps and dirty nappies.” Mr Doidge urged residents to use their kerbside general waste pickup or the nearest waste transfer station to dump general waste. The Cooktown Waste Transfer Station is closed Saturday and

Aerial warning for Tablelanders AERIAL inspections of high voltage transmission lines and insulator washing will be carried out on the Tablelands within the next two months. Powerlink Queensland will send helicopters to inspect the lines and clean insulators at Mareeba and a host of other towns across the North. Powerlink CEO Merryn York said the activities were an important part of ensuring the safety and reliability of the transmission network ahead of storm and cyclone season. “Powerlink has an important responsibility to deliver a reliable supply of electricity to almost four million Queenslanders,” she said. “The helicopter inspections and insulator washing activities help ensure our network is ready for the unpredictable weather the region experiences over summer.” Ms York said local residents may see the helicopter moving relatively quickly and at a low level along the transmission lines and it may pause to wash the insulators – the strings of porcelain or glass discs located near the top of the steel towers. “Washing is carried out on some towers to remove any contaminants, including dust, which can build up on the insulators during the drier parts of the year,” she said. “Highly-trained pilots fly the helicopters, which are fitted with a rigid metal hose that sprays demineralised water at high pressure to clean the insulators. “The pilots will endeavour to maintain the maxi-

Georgetown peace monument nets huge turnout HUNDREDS of people have turned out at Georgetown to honour a monument recognising world peace. An audience of more than 350 people attended the unveiling of the stone monument last Thursday, which pays homage to seven world-famous role models, including civil rights leaders Dr Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela, and Mahatma Gandhi and refugee advocate Juilan Burnside. Local resident Eric Tan worked with business owners, residents, station owners and Etheridge Shire Council to help complete the monument, which took three years. Mr Tan, who has lived in Georgetown since he was 11, said he felt the need to contribute something to the community when he was asked to take part in the project. “It is made up of several tonnes of local rocks, even the plaques were made locally,” he said.
“It is really only a small thing but to get permission to use the seven names was a huge task and took years to complete. “Georgetown, I believe, is the first place in the world to embrace and recognise these champions of peace.” Mr Tan is also a recipient of the prestigious Prix Edelweiss Suisse Award for his contribution to the world peace movement. Etheridge Shire Council Mayor Warren Devlin said it was great to see the community’s support for the project. “This peace monument is our way of showing that it doesn’t matter how remote you are or how small your community is, you can still play a significant art in bringing people together to celebrate peace,” he said. “Peace and acceptance is important in every community and it is very important to us here in the Etheridge Shire.”
Georgetown local Eric Tan speaks at last week’s unveiling of the town’s peace monument.
Sports precinct officially opened
Mareeba State School prep students with The Express managing editor Carl Portella at last Friday’s Big Day Out of Reading.
JUMPING FOR JOY: Craig Crawford and Gilbert Teitzel at the official opening on Saturday.
The Express spreads the word WHEN it comes to reading, we’re big fans. So that’s why your favourite newspaper joined forces with Mareeba State School last Friday for their “Big Day Out of Reading”, hosting a class of prep students at our Byrnes St office as part of a CBD-wide effort to promote the pastime. The Express managing editor Carl Portella donned his farmer’s hat as he read Click, Clack, Moo: Cows That Type, with plenty of laughs along the way. 500 children from prep to Year 3 participated in the day, visiting 20 Mareeba businesses to take part in farm-themed reading sessions.
MAREEBA’S new multi-purpose recreational precinct has officially opened. Sport enthusiasts, government dignitaries and the community gathered on Saturday for the opening of the “Bendigo Bank Recreational Precinct”, with more than 100 people in attendance. Member for Barron River Craig Crawford and Gilbert Teitzel, Chair of Mareeba and Dimbulah Community Bank, officially opened stage one, which is home to netball, basketball and cricket. The impressive new $840,000 precinct offers four outdoor courts for netball and basketball with lighting for night games and a canteen. Across the road, Firth Park has a new cricket pitch, training nets and storage shed. To complement the facilities at Davies and Firth parks, bike and walking tracks that link up to the Bicentennial Lakes have also been con-
Mareeba State School deputy principal Hannah Simpson said the day’s purpose was to teach students that reading was an essential skill to have no matter where they went. “Our goal is to get our kids to develop an intrinsic love of reading,” she said. “Friday was exceptionally great, everyone loved it and it was a great success. “We can’t wait for next year.” Several local businesses have already contacted the school interested in hosting students for next year’s Big Day out of Reading, which could be expanded to include all year levels.
structed as part of stage one. Clubs have been using the facilities for training, local games and inter-town competitions since the middle of this year and directly across the road from Mareeba State High School. The completion of the new facility also allows for more regional carnivals and possibly statelevel competitions in the future. Together with local stakeholders, the precinct was made possible by the Mareeba and Dimbulah Community Bank branches of Bendigo Bank who contributed $250,000 to stage one. “Mareeba needs this facility and we hope today is just the staging point to bring about the original and over plan to construct a multi-purpose recreational facility,” Mr Teitzel said at the launch. Community consultations will soon commence on a feasibility study for stage two.

Country crooners light up Mareeba
TOP OF THE CLASS: Darryl Chaplain won best open singer in the FNQ Country Music Festival’s Talent Quest.
ATHERTON INTERNATIONAL CLUB
Wine, Dine and Play at the Club!
A DELIGHTFUL mix of young and old voices came together for Mareeba’s annual Far North Queensland Country Music Festival. Hosted by the Walkamin Country Music Club, upwards of 100 singers wowed audiences with a ballad or two from last Friday through to Sunday. Amateur singers were encouraged to compete in last Friday’s Open Mic night, while more polished performers tried their luck in the Talent Quest, which was run across the three days. But it was Saturday night’s Supa Show that was a clear favourite, featuring popular Far North artists The Montgomery Brothers, Becci Nethery, Jack McDougall, Hell Western Crooked, Brenda G and Olds Kool. Walkamin Country Music Club vice-president Darryl Chaplain took out the open singer category with a stirring rendition of Adam Brand’s Old Hands. “It’s an honour to get this award,

I’ve been working so hard over the years to make it happen,” he said. “I do it for the kids. I don’t do it for myself. I come along and support the kids and play and put the festival on.” Mr Chaplain, who is one half of band Kurdaz, said his talent had come a long way since he first got involved with the club 10 years ago. “I used to nominate just to help make up numbers. I’ve been performing ever since, gradually improving and I’ve got to a point now where I can win,” he said. “I’ve always loved music.” Walkamin Country Music Club president Michael Ainsley praised the level of talent on display at the festival, which featured performers from Mackay right up to Hopevale. “It was a great competition with some great competitors,” he said. “Everyone’s always very serious about it…but it’s also fun. “The atmosphere has been completely cheerful.”

MP calls for pig permits
CLEAR THEM OUT: Feral pigs are a big problem in the Far North.
A TABLELANDS MP wants to give recreational shooters permits to shoot feral pigs in a bid to stamp out the pest. Dalrymple MP Shane Knuth said a regulated permit system – with financial incentives or bounties – would go a long way to stamping out the feral pig population in the Far North. “Feral pigs are the biggest environmental vandals that we have besides the feral cat and cane toads,” he said. “I’ve always believed that we need to give recreational hunters access and special permits in national parks because they will play a role in cleaning up these pigs in their own time at their expense. “It’s a win-win for everyone.” Biosecurity Queensland classes the feral pig as an “invasive animal” with an “abundant” population across the region. In addition to eating a variety of farming

crops, feral pigs also prey on native wildlife. The pests are also known to spread infectious diseases and parasites. “They’re digging up the countryside, destroying prime farming land as well as eating cassowary and turtle eggs,” Mr Knuth said. Mr Knuth said an influx of recreational shooters into areas plagued by feral pigs would also have economic benefits for surrounding towns. “In the end it flows back to the community. The shooters’ money is spent on equipment at camping stores, fuel and their vehicles,” he said. “The reality is pig hunting is one of the great Australian pastimes.” The call for pig permits comes as Biosecurity Queensland (BQ) releases a guide to control pigs in the Cassowary Coast region to prevent the spread of Panama Tropical Race 4
on banana farms in the region. BQ are currently in the process of testing samples taken from a Tully banana farm for Panama disease tropical race 4 after the landowner reported “unusual symptoms” in his banana plants. The threat of a positive diagnosis has put the Australian Banana Growers Council’s (ABGC’s) planned $3.3 million purchase of a separate Panama-infected Tully Valley farm in doubt until the test results are known. “It’s important that whatever control methods local authorities and landholders adopt, they are coordinated,” Panama TR4 program leader Rebecca Sapuppo said. “We still don’t know how Panama disease tropical race 4 arrived in Far North Queensland, or if it has already spread to other farms, which is why we need to remain vigilant.”

AN agricultural lobby group has demanded Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk give up on her plan to implement controversial vegetation management laws. Labor is holding firm on the proposed Vegetation Management (Reinstatement) and Other Legislation Amendment Bill, despite it being narrowly defeated 44-42 in parliament during August. "The Premier says she is a leader who listens and that she's 'focused on the regions', yet she continues to back a policy aimed at appeasing extreme green views in Brisbane at the expense of jobs in North Queensland,” said AgForce general president Grant Maudsley. "If the Palaszczuk Government persists with their plans to bring back these flawed laws as a policy at the next state election, local MPs will pay the price at the ballot box in North Queensland. "The reality is farmers care about the environment we live and work in every day, and we manage vegetation so we can provide food for Australian and overseas consumers.” Mr Maudsley said the proposed restrictions on vegetation regrowth would “drive up food prices, stifle regional development and ultimately cost jobs”. "AgForce has always said we are willing to work through a science and evidence based process, but the Queensland Government still seems more interested in green politics than developing good policies,” he said. "All we are asking for is fair laws for farmers so we can grow our businesses to produce more food and create more jobs." North Queensland minister Coralee O’Rourke previously told The Express she believed the government had “the balance right” when it came to farming and the environment. But it is not known if Labor will have another crack at passing the laws in this parliamentary term.

Ciggy Butts the real deal WINNERS ARE GRINNERS: (L-R) Phil Quayle (one gold, one silver and two bronze), Gaye Taylor (two gold, two silver) and Karl Durre (one gold, one silver, two bronze) PICTURE: PHIL QUAYLE
Gun challenge shooting success DIMBULAH Sports and Pistol Club has hosted another successful Athol Durre Memorial Challenge, with some solid marksmanship on display. Held on October 2, the annual event, now in its fourth year, honours the memory of the late Athol Durre - a founding member of the club which he helped to establish in 1993. In addition to the Athol Durre Perpetual Shield for highest score, gold, silver and bronze medals were presented to place getters of the four pistol events that were shot on the day. They were: 10m Air Pistol, 50m Free Pistol, 25m Centrefire/Sports Pistol and 25m Standard Pistol. No sighters and no scopes were permitted for the event. Competitors were handicapped according to their grade. The Durre Family sponsors the challenge each year, with club member and son of Athol Durre, Karl Durre, shooting in the event for the first time. “Dad was a competitive pistol shooter and enjoyed shooting all disciplines. He
was very proud of the Dimbulah Sports and Pistol Club as a sport and recreational club where community members can come together, enjoy the sport and socialise with others,” Mr Durre said. “It’s really good that the club sees fit to honor dad’s contribution to the club by holding this yearly event in his memory.” Winner of the Athol Durre Perpetual Shield, Gaye Taylor, said she was proud to have been a member of the club for the past 23 years. “Athol Durre was a dedicated member of this pistol club for many years and a friend to many. It’s great that we come together to remember Athol while participating in the sport that he loved,” she said. “The Perpetual Shield will take pride of place in our home for the next 12 months. Marksmanship is lots of fun and traditionally a sport where the majority of competitors were men and boys. Today more girls and women have taken up the sport and can hold their own.”
HIGH FLYERS: Action from last Thursday’s Men’s Summer Comp game between Ciggy Butts and the Express.
CIGGY Butts are shaping up to once again be grand final contenders after a dominating performance against Mareeba Express in the Men’s Summer Competition. Butts were the competition’s winter champions and looked every bit as formidable as they trounced Express 43-29 last Thursday night. The first quarter was a close encounter, Butts pressing hard on their offence only to be let down by poor shooting to go 9-5 at the break. The cobwebs seemed to clear in the second quarter with Butts starting strongly, unleashing a flurry of layups and three-pointers that caught Express on the back foot. A foul shot and two-pointer
would be Express’ only consolation, down 20-8 by halftime. The underdogs opened the scoring in the third quarter, some consistent shooting able to bring them within 10 points of Ciggy Butts. But a final quarter blow-out cruelled any hopes of a comeback for Express as Butts piled on the points to put the result beyond doubt. Butts centre Warren Thomson was outstanding on the night, consistently terrorising Express with a bevy of layups, two point and three point shots. “We just needed to get rid of those cobwebs in the first quarter after having three weeks off,” he said. “I started to get my rhythm back and work out where the
guys were going on the court...so I could start to move around and use a lot more space.” Express guard Luke Libke said several injuries and unfamiliar player combinations had cruelled his side’s chances of a place in the finals this season. “It’s been difficult to have team cohesion,” he said. “There were points in the game where we got it together, but it just hasn’t been a cohesive season.” In the other Men’s matches, competition leaders Red Devils trounced lowly Comets 78 to 47, youngster Layton Osborn backing up from his High School match to score a whopping 23 points. Young G’s defeated Stingrays 53-38 but no points were taken as Young G’s failed to do duty.

young guns: Kyle Bing Chew, James Jackson, Caleb Constant and Paul Nasser have all stepped up into regular 1st Grade spots this season.
Tough day on the pitch Atherton rallied and fought hard to deny North's shot at gaining an outright win at Griffiths Park, on Saturday. Chasing 266 for first innings points, and missing top order batsmen Dan Parnell and Tom Boorman, Atherton were always going to need some luck. That didn't go their way with the direct hit run-out of Gerard Fox in the fourth over proving costly. Paul Nasser and Peter Sceresini worked hard at the crease, holding the fort for a couple of hours with a 77 run partnership, before Nasser nicked one to the keeper. This precipitated a batting collapse and the boys were all back in the sheds for 105 soon after tea. Norths, sniffing an outright win, enforced the followon. Fortunately, reliable openers Fox and Nasser batted through the danger period and the second innings closed with Atherton 2-90. Result was Norths 266 (C Constant 2-10, K Bing Chew 2-35) – Defeated Atherton 105 (P Nasser 40, P Sceresini 31) & 2-90 (P Nasser 38, G Fox 37) Atherton's Gerard Fox, Pete Sceresini and Dan Parnell have been selected in the Cricket Far North Open team and Paul Nasser, Kyle Bing Chew and Caleb Constant in the U18 team.

Bulls roar in Crad Evans thumping save time
CHAMPIONS: The Mareeba Bulls second division team celebrate their Crad Evans Shield victory in Townsville.
THEY promised to win and they did, big time. The Mareeba Bulls second division side smashed MA Olympic 4-0 to take out the Crad Evans Shield in Townsville on Saturday. Two goals in each half helped illustrate the dominance of Mareeba, who never looked in trouble across the whole 90 minutes. “We dominated from the whistle, we didn’t give Olympic much chance to play the ball,” player-coach Angelo Tatti said. “We put a lot of pressure on them and that’s how we got our goals.” After the disappointment of crashing out in the regular season semi-final last month, Tatti
said it made the victory all the more sweeter. “It’s not just for second division, it’s on behalf of the whole club,” he said. “I’m just so proud of the boys. It was a great, outstanding year. It was a pleasure to put them on the field every week.” Tatti praised defender Darren Rains who netted the first goal and worked tirelessly in defence all game. “He did a great job…he did everything right that day,” he said. Rains was joined on the scoreboard by strikers Keanu Tatti and Christian Mukadi, while defender-turned-forward Mario Terranova also
showed he was hungry with a goal of his own. “I’ve got to give a lot of credit to Christian because he was having a bit of downer but he played a really good game and put in 100 per cent,” Tatti said. “The goal he scored he worked really hard for.” The Crad Evans Shield adds to the side’s premier’s trophy and ensures the Bulls have some silverware to put in the trophy cabinet for this year. The Mareeba United Football Club annual presentations are this Saturday with juniors at 11.30am-3.30pm and seniors at 6.30pm.

State school wins Srhoj cup Home-grown soccer talent was on show last Friday as students had a ball at the annual Wayne Srhoj Cup. Held at Mareeba State School, students from St Thomas and Mareeba State Primary School had a chance to showcase their talents in front of former A-League player and Mareeba local Wayne Srhoj. Both boys and girls play in a competitive match with two twenty minute halves. The Mareeba State School girls’ teams won this year’s match 2-1, while the Mareeba State School boys also won their match on penalties. After a 1-all draw at the end of normal time the boys went to a penalty shootout with the final score 4-3 to Mareeba State. Students, parents and teachers from both schools were cheering on in anticipation as each penalty was taken, giving the day a truly spectacular atmosphere. Wayne Srhoj was on hand to witness the two dramatic finals and present the winning teams with the trophy and said he was impressed by the competition at the cup each year, which was inspired by his childhood experiences playing soccer in Mareeba.
2016 Yungaburra Triathlon postponed Due to the low water level at Lake Tinaroo, the Yungaburra Triathlon will be postponed to the second quarter of 2017 to ensure a quality experience for competitors. Organising Committee Chair, Councillor Sam Banks emphasised that the event will still occur however at a time when the lake is more likely to have sufficient water for the swim leg of the events. “Sunwater have advised that the water level in Lake Tinaroo is likely to drop a further 1.5m in the next five weeks, which may cause safety issues for competitors,”
www.theexpressnewspaper.com.au
she said “We are reluctant to change events to duathlons and are therefore postponing the event. “Competitors that have already registered will be offered a full refund or the ability to hold over their registration until next year. “It is likely that the annual event, usually held in November...will be rescheduled to a time when we can be assured of safe water levels and during a cooler time of the year.”
