Mareeba Annuals set to captivate
MAREEBA’s hallmark racing event is almost upon us once again, with the highly anticipated ‘Mareeba Annuals’ set to deliver on and off the track on Saturday, September 5 at the Mareeba Turf Club. Among those excited are Wendy Rutherford and Gemma Quigg, who attended last Saturday’s ‘Pink Ribbon Garden Party in their finest fashion. TURN TO PAGE 5 for the ‘Annuals’ preview.
TRC’s darkest hour By Justin Fris
THE Tablelands Regional Council officially hit rock bottom during last Thursday morning’s meeting, in yet another painstaking blow for progression-based governance in our region. Two councillor walk outs and a councillor initially denied participation via videolink outlined how fractured relations have become between councillors; and for all TRC ratepayers, it’s a sizeable slap to the face. Councillor Marjorie Pagani – who was unable to attend the meeting in person – had organised to appear via videolink, with technology set up in
the room ready to go. Deputy CEO Matthew Hyde (filling in for CEO Ian Church) said: “Cr Pagani contacted me via email on August 19 and requested to attend the meeting remotely,” he said. “I advised all Councillors of her absence and request late Wednesday afternoon and provided the legislative requirements for attending a Council ordinary meeting. “TRC Councillors attending a meeting remotely is a discretionary matter, as we did not have a policy position on remote attendance at that time.” Despite this, TRC Mayor Rosa Lee Long

deemed Cr Pagani’s rationale for absence was unsatisfactory, and suggested that her videolink representation in the meeting be denied. Prior to vote, Cr Geoff Stocker said: “I believe the Council has the discretion to enable it to decide whether the circumstances are appropriate for a teleconferencing event. “I certainly wasn’t notified and I don’t know whether other councillors have been notified directly; except, perhaps, Cr (Shaaron) Linwood. “The first notification I had of this was late yesterday afternoon, in an email from the acting CEO. And in the absence of an adequate Council policy regarding which circumstances we would
make in this situation, I’m afraid I cannot support this motion.” Mayor Lee Long added: “I think we should consider whether the extenuating circumstances are valid; we don’t have a reason, we don’t know whether Cr Pagani is even on the Tablelands, Brisbane or the Gold Coast. “We don’t know where she is or why. And if this gets approved today, it means at our future Council meetings, any Councillor can ring in and say they wish to appear remotely.” Cr Linwood then outlined her disgust at these sentiments. Science made fun at libary By Justin Fris STUDENTS across the Tablelands eagerly took part in ‘National Science Week’ celebrations last Thursday afternoon at the Mareeba Shire Library. Held from 3.30pm, students aged between 6 and 14 were given an opportunity to learn about basic scientific principles – all while having a load of fun along the way. Two things stood out about the session – one, the unity between all students regardless of which school they attended, along with the thrilled smiles as they learned something new. Mareeba Library branch supervisor Wendy Rutherford said interest in the event had been really solid and that many in attendance were regular borrowers from the library. “We were only able to take a certain amount of children,” she said. “We wanted to make the experiments as fun and interactive as possible.” Along with engaging the children through educa-

tion, a novel take was also placed on the afternoon tea provided for the children. “Now what you see on that plate over there – that is no ordinary bowl of fruit,” she said. “As you can see, the children have eaten the majority of the frogs’ legs
(Kiwi Fruit pieces) and alien eyes (Strawberries).” The library is planning to have several exciting activities planned for the upcoming school holidays, along with its continued commitment to weekly craft, rhyme and storytelling workshops.

PINK was the colour of choice last Saturday afternoon at the Mareeba Turf Club, with hundreds attending the Cancer Council Queensland-endorsed ‘Pink Ribbon Garden Party.’ The ladies were dressed in their finest as they chatted eagerly amid a beautiful lulling breeze under the shady marquees. Organised by the Mareeba Lioness Club, volunteers spent months planning every fine detail for the day – all in aid of assisting those impacted by cancer. Mareeba Lioness Club president Janet Mills said she was thankful for the sheer generosity from both volunteers and those in attendance. “Everything from the cakes, lollies and even plants has been kindly donated,” she said. “We are also extremely thankful for the CWA ladies for their input – along with the Mareeba Turf Club, who kindly let us use their facility.” Mrs Mills said that dedicated volunteers had sold raffle tickets months before ahead of the day and said organisers were keen to ‘open the event up a bit more’ next year, hoping that more gentleman may attend. Cancer Council Qld regional fundraising co-ordinator Bernie McKean addressed the audience and said the Far North was one of the more generous regions in the state. “Over $1.2 million dollar was raised in 2014 from FNQ events such as this alone,” she said.
Members of the Mareeba Lioness Club and Cancer Council Qld played a integral part at last Saturday’s ‘Pink Ribbon Garden Party’ at the Mareeba Turf Club.

Road safety is for everyone
Luke Tudini played the part of the accident victim during Road Safety Week demonstration while emergency service personnel, Alan Clough (Ambulance), Jose Lopez (Fire) and Aleda Robbins (Police) attended to his needs.
Queensland Road Safety Week 2015 ran from August 1723; and in the Far North, the aim was to highlight the importance of road safety. In Mareeba on Wednesday August 19, members of the emergency services including Mareeba Police, Ambulance and Fire Brigade set up a mock accident display in the park opposite St Thomas’s Parish School, in order to highlight the importance of road safety. As local children arrived at the school, they were shown what could potentially happen if care was not taken on our roads. Local emergency services also joined forces for the Road Safety Expo in Cairns where entry was free to all members of the public, including schools. The 2015 Far Northern fatal road toll is by far the worst seen in this district for over 20 years, with some 26 deaths on our roads in just 33 weeks. Road Crash Rescue Team, Paramedics and Police Forensic Crash Investigators walked onlookers through what they have to do each
TRC hits new low with chronic dysfunction From Page 1 She said: “Given we have no policy that states clearly that there has to be a reason, I do not see any reason as to why this cannot be put through today. “Until such time as we have a policy, I’m very happy to go out of this meeting right now and call Cr Pagani and ask for her reason. “But given there’s no policy that she has to provide a reason, I think we are nitpicking to the nth degree.” Siding with Mayor Lee Long on the issue were Cr’s Peter Hodge and Stocker – which promptly saw Cr’s Shaaron Linwood and Rod Marti pick up their belongings and walk out of the meeting. The meeting was promptly adjourned for one hour, with Mr Hyde placing a call to Cr Pagani to determine her reason of absence. Mr Hyde provided clarification for The Express on the matter, explaining the regulatory side of a local government quorum. “The provisions of the local government legislation require a quorum for a Council with an even number of councillors to be half the total number of councillors including the Mayor. Therefore the meeting today met the legal requirements for a Council’s ordinary meeting.” He added: “Council amended its Standing
Orders to provide a general clause for councillors to attend the meeting remotely should the councillor have a personal medical condition or other extenuating circumstance that prohibits them from attending the meeting in person. “Once this was adopted, Council moved a motion to contact Cr Pagani and see if she met the new provisions in the Standing Orders. “The reasons that Cr Pagani provided for her inability to attend in person met the requirements of the new provision in the Standing Orders, however she declined to participate remotely at the time that she was contacted.” In a written statement, Cr Linwood said her decision to leave the meeting ‘was not taken lightly’, but she refused to have her credibility compromised. “There was no conceivable reason for refusing Cr Pagani’s request and absolutely nothing, apart from petty political posturing, stopping the Mayor and Cr’s Hodge and Stocker from approving her participation by teleconference; thereby affording her the opportunity to take part in the meeting. “For them to then propose an amendment to Standing Orders to enforce conditions to allow her to participate was an appalling act, which I would have no wish to be part of. “The decision I took to leave the meeting was not something I took lightly, but enough is enough; and I refuse to compromise my
personal values for honesty and a fair go by participating in actions that were, quite blatantly, vindictive and both ethically and morally bankrupt.” Cr Marti added: “Democracy at the TRC has taken a big hit today. The decision to refuse a motion to allow Cr Pagani to join by teleconference, in accordance with the Local Government Act, is all about personal politics and our community is the big loser.” Malanda Chamber of Commerce President Christine Doan wished that councillors could put their personal differences aside and consider those who actually voted them in. “My views on the poor outcomes for our Shire due to dysfunction are well known,” she said. “I wish the disruptive individuals could somehow find a way to put the community’s interests before their own need to create chaos. “There is a much awaited election coming up. Let’s see some great candidates come out of the bushes. “Tablelanders, be careful with your vote. We do not need any more of this squabbling and waste of resources; but a council which has a vision and works creatively together to achieve it for the best future for all.” Cr Marjorie Pagani was successfully contacted in regard to the matter, however did not provide her response by our print deadline.
time they attend a serious or fatal traffic crash. Local emergency services officers were on hand to answer questions, provide information and explain their specific roles during major traffic incidents and investigations. Drink driving is one of the major killers on Queensland roads. In 2013, drink driving accounted for 64 fatalities on Queensland roads – close to a quarter of all fatalities. Drinking alcohol reduces your ability to drive safely. Alcohol affects your judgement, vision, coordination and reflexes – increasing your risk of crashing. Plan to stay at a friend’s place rather than drive. We are all responsible for keeping our roads safe. If you’re going to be drinking, plan ahead and make arrangements to get home safely, and avoid driving the morning after. If you’re going out drinking, consider alternative forms of transport such as using a taxi or public transport.

Recognising the seniors in our society
Lealani Richardson and Clive Cummings took part in Atherton’s ‘Seniors Week’ celebration at Atherton Amcal.
By Justin Fris RESIDENTS across the Tablelands took part in statewide celebrations last week, commemorating ‘Seniors Week’. A week dedicated to recognising the special part that seniors play in our society, several exciting functions were held across the region. Mareeba hosted a morning tea at its International Club last Friday morning, while Atherton held a similar cake-cutting ceremony at its AMCAL chemist outlet on Cook Street. Prior to the events, Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Tom Gilmore encouraged all residents

to take part in the festivities. “This is an opportunity to enjoy great company, food and entertainment whilst having fun talking about the joys of growing older,” he said. “Many older people assist their families with caring responsibilities whilst being actively involved in their communities through volunteering and passing on their knowledge and experience to others. “Seniors Week provides an opportunity to celebrate the wonderful contribution seniors make, and it is our chance to thank our seniors for their great contribution they have made and

Along with a performance from the St Thomas’s and St Stephen’s combined band – seniors were able to take in several tunes from yesteryear – with Elvis Presley getting the audience’s tick of approval. Mayor Gilmore (along with fellow councillors and staff) attended to duties throughout and freely mingled with those at the richly deserved occasion.

KEY local stakeholders from a wealth of different backgrounds gathered last Thursday evening at the Mareeba RSL for the ‘TFC Combined Chambers’ forum. Among those in attendance were members from various local chambers, along with representatives from the Tablelands Futures Corporation, Gulf Savannah Development and both Mareeba and Tablelands-based councils. The forum gave a good opportunity for all chambers to gather together, with event facilitator Michael Lawrence (TFC chair) providing a informative and educational format for issues to be raised. Mr Ian McKirdy (representing the Palaszczuk Government) began proceedings by outlining key issues with the Northern Australia White Paper, along with key state government policies. Within the provided dossiers, several timelines were included for a raft of different portfolios within the White Paper; although some stakeholders made it clear that they weren’t convinced on several
road and water-based issues. Attendees were also given an opportunity to learn more about enhancing their digital productivity through social media, while Gulf Savannah CEO Lara Wilde briefed parties in regard to happenings in the Gulf. All chamber presidents were then given an opportunity to speak openly about concerns impacting their region. Kuranda Chamber of Commerce president John Robinson began proceedings by outlining both concerns regarding business attitude in the town and the overall state of range. Mareeba Chamber of Commerce president Joe Moro said there were plenty of exciting projects moving ahead in the region, but also highlighted concerns about roads within the region. Christine Doan – who wore hats for both the Atherton and Malanda Chambers on the night – delivered a fantastic presentation, along with taking a cheeky swipe at the currently fractured TRC. All parties then continued to network after the event, in which was truly a special and fantastic concept for all involved.

Community doing its best to unite By Justin Fris A progress report of the Ravenshoe Cafe explosion was formally approved by the Tablelands Regional Council on Thursday morning. TRC Senior Advisor - Disaster Management Sarah Dean, provided a description of the report’s findings. Ms Dean said she had been heartened by the participation at two recent community events in Ravenshoe, which indicated that the community was doing its best to unite.
Councillor Shaaron Linwood said: “I am very pleased with the report which reflects the significant amount of work that the very committed members of the Recovery Group and the independent Ravenshoe Appeals Distribution Committee have put in over the time since the explosion,” she said. “There has been significant positive progress made in that time and the implementation of the Case Coordination Group has been a further step in assisting the recovery of the injured by ensuring they are receiving every assistance and sup-
port that they require in their journey to recovery. “It has been wonderfully affirming as well to see the number of volunteers from right across the Tablelands and beyond who have put up their hands to assist in the recovery efforts of the injured and the communities impacted by offering their time to clean houses, mow yards, provide transport to medical appointments and the like.” Along with the report, Cheryl Matthews was formally announced as the newly appointed Community Development Disaster Community Officer in light of the incident.
The biggest race day of the year
“Cheryl Matthews is well known and respected for her work in Disaster Management and I am absolutely delighted she is now a part of the team working with the Recovery Group,” Cr Linwood said. “She will have a fairly broad area to cover, given that whilst the event took part in Ravenshoe, community members from across the Tablelands have been affected and she will be working hard to ensure that they have input into the types of services that she might be able to facilitate.”

It’s our ABC... Or is it? Some years ago the ABC proudly told us that we each paid eight cents per day to fund its activities, which was fair enough as the shows were good and the news was delivered without bias. These days we each pay closer to 13 cents per day, which would still be a fair price if the news programs offered opinion from all sides of politics. People that like to be kept informed and who don’t enjoy ads default to the ABC, but only some voters appreciate the majority of the commentary. If the ABC were a car it would pull so savagely to the left that it wouldn’t pass a roadworthy. The driver of our expensive but un-roadworthy ABC for the last nine years has been Mark Scott, who is paid most handsomely to keep it running correctly. It’s our ABC, whether we vote left, right or centre, and it is an abrogation of responsibility by Mark Scott that it has become a $1.1 billion per annum promotional vehicle for the political left. ington Island Rangers. A special game of mixed Austag has been planned from 5.15pm, in what will be a special occasion of unity and sportsmanship. A ‘new’ building for Heritage Centre When plans were drawn up for a new building to replicate the main building at the Mareeba Heritage Centre, the estimated cost of the project was going to be $450,000, plus. A fundraising program was then put into place, but due to the financial climate at the time, it was realised that it would take years to raise that amount, if at all. Locals Ron Blundell and Noel Morris purchased a property on the corner of Strattman and Keeble Streets – which contained an old Queenslander, ‘Jamieson House’, which was built in 1905.
With little or no use for the dwelling, it was offered to the Mareeba Heritage Centre free of charge, except for the relocation and renovation costs. At 5am on Thursday August 20, after a short journey from Strattman Street via Walsh Street, the Queenslander was relocated to its new home at the Mareeba Heritage Centre. Mary Thompson, lifelong friend and volunteer at the Mareeba Heritage Centre, said that by the time the project is finished it will have cost half the price of the original new building, while at the same time it was a bonus to have a wonderful old
Queenslander on their site. “We hope to have the project completed in time for the Heritage Centre’s 20th Anniversary in November this year; although looking at the work that’s needed to bring the old girl back to life, it may not be ready in time,” she said. “I would really like to acknowledge the work and effort that both Ron Blundell and Noel Morris have put in and continue to put into the Heritage Centre, without their efforts visitors would be less fortunate. “Once all the finishing touches are done we will look to decorate the house with displays from our past.”

SERVICE CLUB NEWS Atherton Meals on Wheels – Yearly report atherton Meals on Wheels (AMOW) are proud to report that for the financial year July 2014June 2015, we cooked and delivered 11,700 meals to those in need of this service in our local and near community. This was achieved under the guidance of our hard working coordinator Pat Gane, the kitchen staff, volunteers, deliverers and the organizing and planning committee. We provide nourishing three course meals, three times a week, with a maximum of seven meals per week, per client. Our service extends from the Atherton township to Malanda, Yungaburra, and our longest run incorporates Tolga, Rangeview, Walkamin and Kiari. We are now in our forty first year of operation and we continue to appreciate the wonderful community support that comes in many and various ways. Besides this the fundraising activi-
ties of local businesses and community organizations have enabled us to purchase expensive operating equipment. We also very much appreciate the support of our farming community who donate and provide for us locally grown fruits and vegetables. Atherton Meals on Wheels would like to express our gratitude to one of our volunteer hero, Ed Mc Carthy, who passed away recently. Ed contributed 15 years as a volunteer, committee member and a rep for clients and is sadly missed by all. On Thursday August 27, AMOW will be having a promotion display at the Atherton Square Shopping centre, from 9am to 1pm, to educate the community about the services on offer. Volunteers will be in attendance to provide information on Meals on Wheels . For more information please call AMOW on 4091 1686.

The LAND Knuth rallies around electorate MEMBER for Dalrymple Shane Knuth will be leading the charge when he meets with concerned graziers and businesses within his electorate on August 31 in Charters Towers. Mr Knuth – who is one of regional Queensland’s lone voices at the parliamentary table – will present as part of the ‘Rural Crisis Summit’, which is designed to not only talk, but actually solve issues. “This summit isn’t just a chance to speak about the crisis, it’s about taking steps to solve it,” Mr Knuth said. “For our area this is the fight of a generation, rural Queensland is slowly deteriorating and we need to do everything in our power to stop it. “We’ve been calling for a complete debt restructure within the rural and regional sector and it’s time to hold our leaders to account.” Mr Knuth added that the forum was an extension from a similar forum held in Winton last year by the Katter’s Australia Party. “There’s no doubt there are scores of rural families under pressure at the moment and while steps have been made - it’s clearly not enough,” Mr Knuth said. “Both levels of government have had a chance to address our combined message, this is a six month review of their progress.”
The workshops are highly interactive and inclusive.
Landcare workshops popular IT may continue to be dry across much of the southern Tablelands, however this has done little to suppress enthusiasm and innovation in Malanda. Facilitated by Malanda Landcare, a series of workshops have been designed to cover a range of topics of which can benefit local graziers. Some of these topics range from: chemical handling, beef production, chainsaw safety along with fencing and re-vegetation.

“This has been really well received by people from all walks of life and we are delighted with the help from government and groups like the Malanda Beef Group, as well as, the quality of the teachers, the venues, and the eager students.” Kym Kruse’s compost workshop is the next cab off the rank, which will be held on September 1 and 2. Narnia – The Horse and His Boy THE Atherton Performing Arts is set to premiere the stage production of Narnia – The Horse and His Boy, this Friday evening at Silo Road Theatre, Atherton, from 7pm. The story based on the book by C.S. Lewis tells of the epic journey of a young adventurer and his friends striving to reach Narnia in their quest for freedom. Along the way they become caught up in a marketplace, entangled with Narnian royalty and embroiled in a battle. All under the shadow of the lion and a prophecy. The only Narnian tale to occur while Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy are actually on the throne in Narnia, The Horse and His Boy has been adapted for the stage by local writer/ composers Jacqui Stephens and Pat Schafer. The project was three years in the making with both Schafer and
Stephens writing numerous songs in a response to the charm, spirit and personality of the novel. And now after months of work with cast and crew, they, as directors hope their audiences will also feel intrigued, excited and uplifted as they are swept along on this epic journey. The musical fantasy has an orchestra, cast and crew of 80, (including young and old adults, teenagers and children) and will appeal to patrons of all ages. There is something in it for everyone as the story unfolds on different levels – adventure, charm and mystery. There are 10 showings between August 28 and September 13, including three Sunday matinees. Bookings can be made at Tableland Books, Atherton, phone 4091 5137.
Variety Bash make a difference to students at Dimbulah State School The students of Dimbulah State School share their experience... On Wednesday, August 5, the Variety Club Bash came to Dimbulah State School for a wonderful lunch and to make kids happy. There were over one hundred cars in the rally and they all parked on our oval. Some of the best cars were the extended VW Beetle with a ‘Simpsons’ theme, the NASA-themed Science car, and the Scooby Doo van was really popular too. It was nearly the best school day of my life because they gave us toys and lollies and I even got a pair of cool aviator sunglasses. The Variety Club also made a donation of digital document projectors for each classroom. The projectors let us see documents like books or worksheets projected from any desk onto the interactive whiteboards. They look like a reading light and work a bit like the old overhead projectors, but a lot more technological. It was a fantastic day for the students at our school and we hope that all the drivers had a great adventure on their ten-day trip all the way down to Fraser Island. - By Dimbulah State School students; Leo Balzarolo (pictured, Year 3) and Raymond Evans (Year 6). Dimbulah State School’s Rotary Interact Club gathered support from the participants of the Variety Bash to raise funds for elected humanitarian projects. Gypsy Busato, President of the club explains. “The day was a huge success – we raised more than enough funds to cater for our project goals,” “With these funds, Year 10 students will be able to supply blankets to Mongolia for the ‘Stand Up 4 The Gobi’ project and provide packaged foods and backpack beds to ‘Rosies’ in Mareeba. “A huge thank you to Variety Bash 2015 participants. It is heart-warming to know that people from all over Australia are willing to support worthy causes to make the world a better place”. - By Dimbulah State School Year 10 students of the Rotary Interact Club.

anything but black and white. It's well meaning and there is no shortage of heart. To its credit, it excels at observations of Australian culture, attitudes and behavior, but false notes prise us out of the overlong narrative, which lags where it should be contemplative and moving. Nonetheless, in adapting Reg Cribb's stage play for the screen, Cribb and Sims have lovingly created a wonderful scenario of contradictory characters that for the most part are rich with unexpected complexity. EXPRESS sPORT Storm jolt to life when required against Gladiators
Gladiators veteran David Grainer sets up an attacking raid for the home side.
By Justin Fris THE Edmonton Storm finished their 2015 Cairns District Rugby League campaign with a 26-22 victory over the Mareeba Gladiators last Saturday evening at Davies Park. It was a tumultuous week for the Storm, who had their coach removed from his post on the Wednesday before the match. Heading into the contest, a win from either side would see them join 5th placed Ivanhoes on 21 points – although both had inferior percentage and mathematically no chance of playing finals. The Storm made several changes going into the match - but this had little effect - as they took the lead after four minutes. After impressive work in the corridor of the field, Dale Ambrym scooted along the grandstand touchline, with defenders in his wake. He appeared to boggle the football upon touching down, however the referee gave him the benefit of the doubt. A testament to their character, this try failed to dampen the spirits of the home side, who marched right back down the field and put up a try of their own. In somewhat of a trademark play (Gladiators of-
ficials joked it was his special patch of turf) David Grainer motored his way through three defenders before crossing only metres from the posts. It was the fourth try of its kind from that end this season. The Storm signalled early that they would be committed to their kicking game, with Steve Murgha causing chaos in the Gladiators defence with his superb grubbers on the 5th tackle. This persistence would eventually pay off on 21 minutes, with a dainty little chip kick gobbled up by Madisan Smith, who took advantage of superb ball use from his forwards. Despite trailing 8-6, Gladiators players were upbeat. They were given a sizeable advantage at the half hour mark, when Storm enforcer Steve Tatipata was sent off for the remainder of the match for unsportsmanlike conduct. In simple terms, there were three key moments in this match which defined the outcome. The first two occurred in a whirlwind three minute spell. Facing their last tackle, Murgha lowered his eyes and executed a meticulous cross-field kick. After the ball was tipped off the hands of an errant Gladiators defender, scintillating Storm winger Dion Wales pounced and was off to the races. Eddie Prior would mirror Wales’s effort only 90 seconds later and in the blink of an eye, the Storm
had bolted to a 20-6 lead. The home side would suffer further adversity in the second half, as the physical nature of the contest took its toll on some of the players. With time running out and needing heroes, duo Rhylan Reys and William Dodd saved some of their finest football for the remainder of the match. Reys was simply electric in the backfield, particularly when facing an impending kick-chase defence. This work would culminate in a craftily work try on 59 minutes, which would narrow the deficit for his side. After an Ian King try narrowed the score to 2018 with 13 minutes remaining, the final telling moment of the match would occur. Robert Pedersen was penalised by the referee for lingering after he made a tackle; Pedersen appeared to make a genuine attempt to untangle from the contest, but the referee thought otherwise. The Storm would subsequently score off the penalty through a try from Ali Henley, which ultimately secured victory. Across the other side of the Tablelands, the Atherton Roosters ensured that they would finish the season without the dreaded ‘Wooden Spoon’, after recording a solid 38-22 win over Kangaroos.
MUFC celebrate back to back FNQ Premier League crowns THE Mareeba United Football Club confirmed back to back FNQ Premier League premierships, after a clinical 1-0 victory over the Southside Comets last Saturday afternoon at Barlow Park in Cairns. Stratford’s 2-0 victory over Leichhardt counted for nought in the scheme of the title race, with Alex Srhoj’s men flexing their dominance over the Comets from the off. Weather conditions in Cairns were unseasonal for this time of year, with the mercury topping 35 degrees in the middle of pitch. The visitors dominated throughout the middle of the park and were validated for their persistence with a trademark header from Anthony Mete in the 35th minute. Upon reflection, Srhoj said he was satisfied with the ‘workmanlike’ nature of this season’s crown, with play-

ers across all squads regularly going beyond the call of duty. “Yesterday, we had Victor Madrid and Benny (Ben Stabile) play 150 minutes in the middle of the park – both reserves and our match. “Three of our reserves players backed up from the second division match the night before – two lads even played three matches in three days.” Srhoj also handed promising teenager James Elmes an opportunity to express himself in the first-team, with the youngster acquitting himself with astute distinction. “He didn’t give the ball away once,” Srhoj said. “He didn’t look out of place out there and I look forward to seeing him express himself further in future matches.” The Bulls will wind up their regular season commitments with a trip down to Marlin Coast. Srhoj said selection will be a juggling act, with several senior players returning for selection.

FOUR local athletes from the Tablelands have been formally recognised for their performance by the North Queensland Sports Foundation. Sarrah Myrteza (Basketball) and Kristie Eyers (Boxing) were formally presented with their North Queensland Sport Encouragement Bursary packs from Mareeba Shire Council CEO Peter Franks last Wednesday morning. Within the bursary, both Myrteza and Eyers received a jacket, medal and cheque for $650 – with both girls extremely humbled by the acknowledgement. Myrteza has recently returned from the Australian Junior Basketball Championships in Hobart, where she shone from Queensland North. Regularly travelling large distances
for training and games (Myrteza regularly attends 6am training sessions in Cairns prior to a full day of school) is all part of her following her dreams. Eyers is notably gifted in her craft of choice, regularly travelling long distances in a bid to further her career as an astute boxer. On Thursday morning in Atherton, Tablelands Regional Council Mayor Rosa Lee Long (pictured presenting) deliveredbursaries to Stephanie Armstrong (Swimming) and Samadhi Baker (Cricket). “Congratulations to Stephanie for her achievements in swimming and Samadhi for his cricket accomplishments. “This bursary will help meet costs associated with competing in their chosen sport and to take their performance to the next level.”

Deadleys far from convincing in win
Kuranda Range closure temporarily pauses celebration By Justin Fris
A collapsed tree on the Kuranda Range caused the originally postponed FNQ Premier League fixture between Mareeba United Football Club and Leichhardt last Wednesday evening to be postponed a second time. Leichhardt officials and players were on their way up to Mareeba when the incident occurred. Upon arriving at Borzi Park around 7pm - both sides agreed to fulfil the reserves fixture as planned – and make a decision about the Premier fixture this week. In the reserves encounter,
a Bulls victory would have meant that the hosts would have been able to celebrate winning the premiership at home. Leichhardt had other ideas however, and forced the match to end in a 1-1 draw, meaning the Bulls would need to wait until their Saturday afternoon match against the Southside Comets. On Saturday afternoon however, it was all academic for the Bulls, who sealed back to back premierships against the Comets, despite Leichhardt winning 6-0 over Stratford.

Mareeba netball heads to post-season NETBALL in Mareeba has been humming along nicely of late, after a memorable season across all competitions. Ahead of the impending finals series, it would be remiss to not acknowledge some of these achievements, which included the 2nd placing for the Association’s U/14’s side at the Netball Qld State Country carnival in Townsville. These positive results were also coupled by impressive showings by the U/13’s and U/14’s at the Netball
Qld State Carnival, with 4th and 7th placings respectively. Over the weekend, five teams ventured to Port Douglas, where they competed earnestly against quality opposition. With upcoming finals matches expected to be fiercely contested, there has never been a better time to support our local athletes.
Tatti lights up scoresheet THE All Stars U/15 juniors clinched a thriller over Ruggeri’s Ninjas in the Mareeba Junior Basketball League fixtures played last week. Locked at 36-all right on full time, exceptional All Stars player Tristan Cater successfully sank a free throw to give the All Stars side a single point victory. Others to contribute well for All Stars were Cameron Turner and Matt Shortjoe, while Liam Bombardieri and Reef James showed out well for Ruggeri’s Ninjas. Fine performances by Tyson Brown, Dean Gallo and Zac Myrteza allowed the TGT Wolves to register a comfortable 46-30 win over QITE. Aaron Cagat played an outstanding game for the defeated QITE side. Another excellent U/18 junior fix-

ture saw the Amalgamated Pests post a 34-28 win over Travel Experience. Although on a beaten side, Damien Brcko was best on court. Sonlia continued on their winning way with a convincing 57-35 defeat over the Smurfs. High scoring Tyson Tatti continued on his scoring spree contributing another 23 points for the winners. A top game by Kieran Turner in scoring 17 points resulted in a good 25-12 win over Dunrite Dynamos, while the other primary schools fixtures saw Ravenello Stars too good for the Mareeba Mitsubishi Rugrats, defeating them by 31-12. Brennan Collis and Dinithi Heenkenda Playing well for Stars, Cameron Reppel had good moments for Rugrats.
THE MBA Deadleys continued their winning streak in the Mareeba Basketball League last Thursday evening, defeating Express 50-45. Despite the victory, the youthful Deadleys were far from convincing and looked anything but a genuine title contender on the night. Both sides adopted a lairisingbased offence for lengthy periods of the match – wasting good looks in the key by heaving away unnecessary three-point attempts. After a relatively even opening quarter, the Deadleys headed into their huddle with an early 16-12 lead. Express – who were keen to snap their winless streak in the new season – began the second term with great enthusiasm, with Christie dominating in mid-court. But for all of their dominance in possession, Express’s shooting was quite poor. They went 2/10 from the field and 2/7 from downtown. The Deadleys only fared marginally better, going 4/9 from the field. They appeared content to heave long passes downcourt rather than gradually passing their way through patiently.

Both sides became incredibly sloppy toward the half-time interval. It was fierce and competitive, but ugly to watch. The shooting only got worse during the third quarter by both teams, but the Deadleys made fewer mistakes – hence their 35-34 advantage at the final change. In the final quarter, it was all Deadleys, who managed to control the tempo of the match from the outset. Once well and truly beaten, Express began to randomly attempt audacious three-point attempts – to his credit, Ely Simmons hit two in a row. Earlier in the night, the Comets further justified their improvement in the league with a terrific 49-37 win over the Stingrays. Hot Air has also pushed their claims for a finals berth, after handing the Red Devils a surprising 48-40 loss. The Men’s A-Grade table currently stands as follows: Stingrays 11, Red Devils 11, Comets 10, Deadleys 9, Hot Air 6, Express 4, Barras 4. In the Ladies competition, the Serial Killers opened a three point buffer at the top of the table, defeating the Gummaz 26-16.
