Off and racing in 2016
Country racing ended on a high in 2015 and the trend has continued in the new year with the annual Malanda Cup, sponsored by the Malanda Hotel, held at the Atherton Turf Club last Saturday. Fabulous fashions, fine racing and entertainment were on show for the first race meet of 2016. Among those who attended and entered Fashions on the Field were Jonathon Bennett and Tiarni Potts, who took out the best dressed teens of the day. Turn to pages 21 and 23 for more on country racing in our region. Photo by Peter Roy Photographer.
Hero, mate and pioneer
As an Albatross jet fighter screamed overhead Mayor Tom Gilmore officially opened the Rex Budd Memorial Park at the Mareeba Airport in front of 130 friends and relatives, honouring a true local hero. By Carl Portella Pastor Chris Wright led a very emotional and at times comical ceremony, as he officiated the opening of the ‘Rex Budd Memorial Park’ late last year on Saturday, December 19, 2015. Rex had become close to Pastor Wright towards the end of his life and it was fitting that he should officiate the park opening, as he closed the chapter on Rex’s life at his funeral in 2010.
As he gazed over the more than 130 people who attended the opening he said; “If Rex were here today he would not be a happy man, he would not have liked the attention, he didn’t like being put up on a pedestal. “He was like that his entire life, even though he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for his services to his country and pioneered the helicopter mustering industry in far north Queensland.
“Rex was a very humble man who never sought the limelight and kept very much to himself unless he got to know you,” Pastor Wright said. His brother Arthur, who attended the opening with his niece Ann Budd said; “Rex would have made a big fuss about all this here today, but I am very proud of his achievements and quite taken back by the number of people who have attended this ceremony, he has touched the lives of many
people.” Ann recalls the two choppers landing in the front yard of the family farm and said the pilots had lunch and then went up for scenic flight. Ann, who was with Rex in the chopper said; “When Rex flew over some of the property he noticed some feral cattle which had never been mustered come out of the scrub land and it was from there that he got the idea of mustering with helicopters.” CONTINUED PAGE 3

Park opened in honour of Rex FROM PAGE 1 Mareeba Shire Mayor Tom Gilmore, who officially opened the park, told the crowd that he knew Rex, but not well and that he planted the trees here which are now sheltering the BBQ. “It is entirely appropriate that we recognise Rex for a number of things,” Mayor Gilmore said. “He changed cattle mustering in one swoop, as well as being a warrior of some nature and when you have someone in your community of particular note you have to celebrate that. He planted these trees because he was a gardener, all for his own enjoyment. “Rex wasn’t just a pilot, he was a mentor and teacher and a friend to many, there are not many people you meet in your life that are very special.” Pastor Wright summed up the ceremony when he said; “Rex was a very religious man, he attended mass every Sunday and he changed the world with his helicopter mustering; for those who kept vidual with him in his last days know what a terrible time he went through.” The Rex Budd Memorial Park stands at the Mareeba Airport and is a reminder of a local hero, friend, mate and pioneer of our great region. The park encompasses a sheltered BBQ area which is open for the public to use. Organiser Chris Atkinson would like to thank those who made donations and helped in any way in the construction of the park, his heartfelt thanks to the community and the Mareeba Shire Council.
At the opening of the Rex Budd Memorial Park: Mike Tully (Rex’s first pilot who went on to buy Cloncurry Muster from Rex), Greg Parsons (Rex’s longest serving engineer), Gwen Budd, Anne Budd, Aurther Budd, Gerry Weedon of Cloncurry Muster (a pilot who flew for Rex), Don Blanch (a Pilot that flew for Rex and was the last pilot that Rex employed and was therefore was called the apprentice) and Roy Conomis (engineer for Rex and now CEO of Aeropower).

North Queenslanders tell debt stories
Rural Debt and Drought Taskforce Chairman and KAP Member for Mt Isa Rob Katter.
The second round of public forums for the ‘Rural Debt and Drought Taskforce’ – established to address the debt structure issues faced by Queensland’s primary producers – kicked off in Mareeba yesterday. The forums, designed to give primary producers, and those in communities dependent on the agricultural industry the opportunity to express their ideas, and experiences with rural debt. Member for Dalrymple Shane Knuth who was also in attendance, said the opportunity for people to share their stories is an essential component to develop solutions to this crisis. “The agricultural sector contributes over $14 billion to our economy, however the re-
ality is farm debt has now reached up to $60 billion dollars, and the return for our product is becoming less and less,” Mr Knuth said. KAP member for Mt Isa Rob Katter and Taskforce Chairman said the submissions will then go on to help develop recommendations for the State Government. "This input will then allow us to develop workable long-term solutions – structures like a reconstruction board or multi-peril insurance schemes have real potential to stabilise the industry," Mr Katter said. "Rural debt is something we see suffocating our regional communities day in, day out. "We are collecting submissions from around the state to ensure we have illustrat-
ed the rural debt crisis in full," he said. Mr Katter said he looked forward to hearing from those in a variety of agricultural industries in the North East. "It is clear that this is an issue in all sectors, from cattle producers to cane growers we are feeling the effects of a mismatched debt structure," Mr Katter said. "We are looking for those from all walks of life to come along and contribute," he said. Forums will continue into the month of January concluding in Brisbane on the 29th. Public submissions can be made in writing via ruraldebtsecretariat@daf.qld.gov.au. For more information head to www.qld.gov. au/ruraldebttaskforce
Kennedy receives airstrip funding THE Kennedy electorate has received more funding after being allocated $1.05m of the Turnbull Government’s Remote Airstrip Upgrade Programme. Amongst the list of airports listed to benefit from the funding is the Chillagoe airport. Upgrades will include electrical maintenance, installing animal fences and ensuring repairs are carried out to damaged runways. Federal Member for Kennedy Bob Katter said: “This is a wonderful achievement for all of our people who have aggressively sought money for the upgrading of our rural airports,” Mr Katter said today. “Nearly one half of the allocation for Queensland has gone to just one Federal electorate and that is attributable not to myself, but to the people that worked hard and we want to congratulate each and every one of them. “During the wet season it is impossible to keep all of the roads operable and our airports quite literally become our only lifeline – so every effort must therefore be made to keep those airports in working order.
Mareeba Multicultural Festival receives $20,000 boost MAREEBA has received $20,000 in state funding towards the 2016 Mareeba Multicultural Festival. Easily one of the most anticipated events on Mareeba’s social calendar, the festival has also been approved to apply for future funding in 2017 and 2018. Multicultural Festival committee chair Guliano Cordenos said he was delighted with the news and that preparations for the 2016 festival will begin on January 27, when the festival committee will meet for their general meeting. An invitation to the Mareeba Multicultural Festival will also be sent to the recently appointed Multicultural Affairs Minister, Grace Grace.

Despite patchy to heavy falls in western and northern centres of Queensland, the drought is far from broken. Shadow Agriculture Minister Deb Frecklington said more general rain was needed over the coming weeks and months to break the drought afflicting nearly 90 per cent of Queensland. “Even then, it could take years for individual farms and local towns to recover,” Ms Frecklington said. “While falls of 20 to 50mm have been received in western centres, many areas have missed out. “As the saying goes, it doesn’t rain money. Even with continued good falls and pasture growth, it will take years for farming and grazing operations to generate the cash-flow needed to get back to where they were. “This will be particularly so for breeding operations that have all-but de-stocked, because even with a return to normal seasons, the challenge will be re-stocking at record saleyard prices. “Accessing finance to re-build herds could well be beyond many, with debt-equity ratios stretched after years of little to no income. “We keep hearing cattle prices are the best in 30 years, but no one has got any cattle to take advantage of the market.”

Mango fever The far northern mango season is now in full swing. After a slight delay due to an average wet season and a late winter, mango picking is expected to wrap up in a couple of weeks. With only limited time left KP (Kensington Pride) mango producers are busy setting aside a possible winner in the ‘Total Food Network KP Mango Competition’. Entries for the competition close on January 31 and with $1,000 up for grabs, entries have started coming in thick and fast. One of the early entries at the start of December last year, came from Glen and Aileen Bookall, of Gilbert Gold, in the Georgetown region and made an excellent start to the com-
petition by producing a 1.036kg specimen. As nurturing continued over the holidays and harvests began, farmers and back yard growers a looking out for “The Big One”. Local farmer Vince Mete made sure his workers were under instructions to “keep an eye out for a big one” as his harvest came to an end last week. His wife Connie submitted what is to date the heaviest mango, weighing in at 1.106kgs, while a close second weighing in at 1.032kgs was submitted by Remzi and Tina Mulla on the same day. said he doubts that KP mango sizes will be as big as last years. “The previous season’s weather was perfect for mangoes with rain coming at the right time,” said Mr Moro. “This year unfortunately we didn’t have a very good wet season and our winter was a long one; all these natural or mother nature occurrences come into play in producing quality and in the case heavy mangoes. “I think that anything over 1 to 1.2kg will be hard to beat,” he said. So keep those photos coming in and remember to look out for the big one.

Growers concerned over backpacker tax increase THE 417 visa holders (or backpackers) workforce contribute enormously towards the Australian tourism and horticultural industry, plus the economy in general. Any moves by the Government to increase tax on backpackers to 32%, is seen as short sighted by the Mareeba District Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association (MDFVGA). MDFVGA president Joe Moro said the backpacker workforce is vital to the horticulture industry, predominately in the areas of harvest of season fruits and vegetables. Backpackers can be well utilized by growers to ramp up a large number of the casual workforce, in a short time frame. This type of workforce often does not have to be skilled in fruit and vegetable harvest, however, they need to be reliable, energetic and motivated. “Most working visa backpackers come to Australia for the purpose of travelling and seeing the sights around Australia,” Mr Moro said. “The work that they are able to obtain is mainly to top up their available funds to enable them to further travel and spend in Australia. “Most backpackers are very shocked at the cost of living in Aus-
www.theexpressnewspaper.com.au
tralia – accommodation, food and tourist attractions. “The PAYG tax that backpackers have to pay is the area that is of great concern to our growers. “Currently resident seasonal workers in the horticultural industry are taxed at 13% and we understand that the non-resident rate is at 32%. “Growers feel that this will cause a massive drop off in available backpacker workers due to the fact that the weekly reward will be less than the cost of living and that no savings can be made. “They will either not come to Australia, or most likely move on as quick as possible through Australia before their funds run out. The MDFVGA proposes that the government – (A) continue taxing backpackers at the current rate (according to how they fill in their tax declaration, (B) ideally tax seasonal backpackers at 13%; (C) Superannuation should be paid by employers at current rates. However laws should be changed whereby a non-resident worker should not have access to these funds, but instead the monies should be paid into Government consolidated revenue for the benefit of the whole nation.

Quest to eradicate electric ants in 2016 THE quest to completely eradicate electric ants in 2016 is on pace, however authorities are stressing the importance of maintaining stringent surveillance practices. National Electric Ant Eradication Program Director Sarah Corcoran said the Far North had responded terrifically to the ‘ant hunt’, but reminded everyone to keep on their guard. “The challenge at this point of the eradication program is to keep our surveillance activities operating at full speed despite not finding any new electric ant nests,” she said. “Finding the last 1 per cent of ant nests takes as much effort as finding the first 99 per cent. “We have to check and re-check every inch of the region. “So far with the support of the
community, we have checked more than 1650 residential blocks for electric ants since the ant hunt campaign began in April. “We are particularly interested in checking people’s yards for electric ants if they have moved house, or bought or swapped potted plants in the last five years. “Electric ants like to live in pot plants and garden litter, and because they are so small and difficult to identify, it really does take one of our expert field staff to confirm that your property doesn’t have them.” Residents and businesses who have bought or swapped pot plants in the past five years, or who suspect they might have electric ants can register online at www.anthunt.daf.qld.gov.au for a free property check.

Stop ruining our trees What our earth is suffering? It is not climate change, it is climate deterioration. Fires in California, Indonesia, South Australia and Western Australia may all seem safely beyond our immediate region. But each year large portions of our Tablelands countryside are also set on fire. We know that burning means carbon, which had been safely stored in living or dead wood, is then converted to carbon dioxide resulting in more pollution. Every fire kills, yet people continue to burn. The later in a year a fire is lit, the hotter it burns, scorch will reach higher up each tree, and more living trees will be burned to the ground. Pitiful fires are lit each year in the country between Mount Molloy and Mareeba. Some burns take place in May or June, and one is left hoping that this will be the extent of fire for the year but month after month more country goes up in smoke. A November fire this year brought down a number of living trees on the east side of the Mulligan Highway (pictured above). Fires which burn against the base of a tree will often kill a small patch of bark leaving dead wood exposed. Any subsequent fire is likely to re-ignite the patch of dead wood produced by the earlier fire. At some point a fire which lights up dead wood at the base of a tree will keep on smouldering, penetrating
further into the tree. Aged trees have hollow interiors, the hollow often connecting to broken hollow branches. Once fire enters the core of a tree it will burn like a chimney that has caught fire; the end comes when the trunk is so severely burned that the living tree collapses. Each living tree that is burned alive deprives wildlife of shelter from heat and from predators. The loss of hollow branches is a loss of dens for small animals, loss of leaves, flowers and fruit for wildlife. Every fire has a detrimental effect, organic matter is turned to ash, wind and rain erodes top soil, climate deterioration is aggravated, the beauty of a living tree is gone, small creatures are killed and many more are deprived of food. Dr Steve Murphy, who is studying Night Parrots and their habitat requirements, has stated that the only known population of this extremely rare bird lives in country which shows no evidence of burning for the past 64 years. By contrast, in Esperance, WA, 90 % of habitat for the Western Ground Parrot and Gilbert’s Rat-kangaroo was burned out last month. If we don’t protect our earth, the landscape we know will be lost, not with a bang, but with a whimper. Story supplied by concerned local
What did you get for Christmas?
In a recent survey 66% of people admitted to receiving bad gifts for Christmas. The worst gift Australians receive at Christmas time is a toiletry pack, followed by ‘boring’ movies and documentaries and novelty t-shirts. 50% of Australians admitted to expecting a gift from friends or extended family but not actually receiving one. Friends and extended family are notorious for giving bad gifts for Christmas, with one-third of Australians receiving bad gifts from them. NSW residents make up one-third of Australia’s worst gift givers. Australians have been revealed as Christmas grinches rather than Santa Clauses, according to new research from Nabo.com.au, the social network for local communities. The survey of 1,000 respondents has found that 66% of the population don’t like the Christmas gifts they receive. The top five worst gifts Australians receive at Christmas time are novelty or statement t-shirts, ‘boring’ movies and documentaries, toiletry packs, socks, and poor fitting or unfashionable clothing, with surprisingly, no
mention of lumps of coal. Further statistics suggest that friends and extended family are so stumped for gift ideas; they choose to give nothing at all, with half the population admitting to expecting a gift but not actually receiving one. While the odd bad gift is expected every Christmas, it also appears that toilet humour is in great supply with 21 per cent of people stating they had received a toilet seat from a friend. As for what most Australians do with these gifts, onethird admit to trying to get refunds on diet or self-help books while almost 40 per cent of the population re-gift boxes of chocolate. Conversely, half of the population will keep Tupperware and cleaning products, despite disliking them. According to the report, gift-giving traits differ by state. New South Welshmen make up one-third of Australia’s worst Christmas gift givers, while Canberrans are the least generous, with almost a quarter of the State waking up to empty stockings. Half of South Australians will throw away the novelty t-shirts they unwrap on Christmas Day. Sometimes it’s not just the thought that counts.?

“The role of Councillor will fit hand in glove for Katrina,” Mr Srhoj said. “At QITE Katrina had a vision and transformed the organisation to being a valuable community asset and catalyst. “I know she can do the same with whatever she turns her hand to,” he said. Katrina is Tableland born and bred and has lived in Atherton for the past 14 years. She has worked on a number of regional economic and community groups including Tableland Futures and Regional Development Australia (FNQ and Torres Strait).

THE YEAR THAT WAS 2015
JANUARY & FEBRUARY 2015
Over the next three editions, The Express we will be providing our readers with a ‘Year in Review’ – a recap of the year that was 2015 and the main stories that featured in each edition of The Express. JANUARY 14, 2015 2015 State Election – Christmas and New Year festivities had barely been packed away and the state was abuzz with a political showdown. LNP Premier Campbell Newman called an early state election, riding with a 78-7 majority on his back. His opponent, Annastasia Palaszczuk, was very much an unknown variable. While the LNP hit the campaign trail hard, the ALP kept their distance. Locally, the Member for Cook David Kempton and Member for Dalrymple Shane Knuth were fancied to retain their seats. In our January 14 edition, Mr Kempton said that he was keen to follow on with the job and continue to focus working with key stakeholders.

Mr Kempton’s closest challenger – ALP candidate Billy Gordon – told the readership that there would be ‘no shortcuts’ during his campaign. “I believe the people want a politician who can make critical decisions, while at the same time being able to relate to them,” he said. Mr Knuth – who would be aiming for his third consecutive victory in Dalrymple – would face another stern test from LNP candidate, Liz Schmidt.
A passionate member of the local community for several decades, Ida took over from Evan McGrath.

Freak storm tips grandstand – A freak storm surge weaved its way through Kerribee Park, during the Mareeba Bandits and Barron one day cricket match. The teeming rain was horizontal, coupled by a howling wind. It was that heavy, that a sudden gust of wind upended the grandstand, causing it to crush a nearby car. No one was injured during the incident.
New Rotary Field Day’s Chair – In our January 21 edition, local Rotarian Ida Portella was formally announced as the new chair for the 2015 Rotary FNQ Field Days.

Mareeba Airport Upgrade – Through the LNP’s ‘Royalties for Regions’ program, Member for Cook David Kempton was able to confirm that $13 million would be allocated toward upgrading Mareeba’s airport. As the funding was secured through the fund, it would remain available, irrespective of the Cook election result.
JANUARY 28, 2015 Barron River race heats up – Focus shifted on the Barron River electorate in our January 28 edition, with incumbent LNP member Michael Trout keen for a second term in state parliament. Fellow candidates Andrew Schebella (Palmer United) Noel Castley-Wright (Greens) and Craig Crawford (ALP) also outlined their plans if elected. McGuire’s pitch to reduce unemployment – Malanda Chamber of Commerce president Geraldine McGuire made a heartened speech to the Tablelands Regional Council.
Her speech centered on the need for action on reducing unemployment and increasing agricultural production amongst young people in the town. All eyes fell on Division 2 councillor Geoff Stocker, who said he would discuss the matter with stakeholders in due course. Sadly, nothing had changed by the end of the year. Sport begins to take shape – Both the Mareeba Gladiators and Atherton Roosters recommenced preseason training at the end of January. The Mareeba Bandits Cricket Club were also having a stellar season, with Liam Bombardieri, Lachlan Ford and Shane Gisell shining in their 10 run victory over Norths.

Upset about moving from a big city to a small town, teenager Zach Cooper (Dylan Minnette) finds a silver lining when he meets the beautiful girl, Hannah (Odeya Rush), living right next door. But every silver lining has a cloud, and Zach's comes when he learns that Hannah has a mysterious dad who is revealed to be R. L. Stine (Jack Black), the author of the bestselling Goosebumps series. It turns out that there is a reason why Stine is so strange... he is a prisoner of his own imagination - the monsters that his books made famous are real, and Stine protects his readers by keeping them locked up in their books. When Zach unintentionally unleashes the monsters from their manuscripts and they begin to terrorize the town, it's suddenly up to Stine, Zach, Hannah, and Zach's friend Champ (Ryan Lee) to get all of them back in the books where they belong.

Victor and Angie have been fitting generations of families for more than 24 years; and they know everything there is to know about shoes. The Graeme Shoe Store is home to top-quality shoes and you can be guaranteed the right fit every time. Giving your child the right shoes during their school years is as vital as their education. Correctly fitted shoes allow for healthy foot development during their schooling years. Incorrectly fitted shoes can have a serious impact on their feet for years. So don’t settle for just any school shoes, the Graeme Shoe Store team will help you find a long lasting, quality product, that will give your child’s feet support and comfort. Victor and Angie know that every child’s feet grow throughout the year, so it is important to choose a shoe that will allow for growth. A shoe that is too
tight will not last the school term or year. When purchasing a pair of shoes at the Graeme Shoe Store your child’s feet will be measured to find the correct size and shoe type. This allows for every parent to purchase a pair of shoes that suit their budget and are the best possible quality and fit. If shoes are what you are in need of, come and visit the Graeme Shoe Store today and get your child off to school in the best pair of shoes possible. Champions of the North
Local North Queensland rugby league historian Tony Price had a busy 2015 writing a 310 page book titled ‘History of the Mackay Rugby League’. Since last year’s NRL Grand Final in September, Tony has written the first of a series called, “Champions of the North”, which he intends to produce four times a year. The 125 page book covers the 2015 season in detail and along with his journalist brother, Simon Price, they have interviewed the cream of North Queensland Rugby League including Jonathan Thurston, Kyle Feldt, Michael Morgan, Kerry Boustead, Scott Bolton, Jacob Lillyman and others. The book also covers in detail, the Queensland Intrust Super Cup and every club competition from Thursday Island in the north to Mount Isa in the west and south to Sarina. ATHERTON TABLELAND HOCKEY ASSOCIATION
Female Rugby League in far north Queensland enters a new era in 2016 with a proposed club competition for girls aged 12 to 18 years. Rugby league is the sport of choice for an ever growing number of girls, with almost 300 in the Cairns District participating in ‘Train and Play’, school based programs and exhibition games in 2015. Girls have the opportunity to play club rugby league in mixed teams from 5 to 12 years, with participation from 13 to 17 years. Until now this has been limited to female programs, carnivals and events predominantly school based, before girls are eligible to play open women rugby league. QRL Cairns District Operations Manager, Sheron McDougall, said the interest for a club based competition in the Cairns District was high. “Girls are looking to play Rugby League on a regular basis and club competition is an obvious transition, following on from the strong participation growth in our district,” Sheron said. “This development is the culmination of the programs put in place by the FNQ NRL Game Development team and supported by schools, clubs and families. “The NRL Development and QRL staff will continue

WILL BE HELD ON TUESDAY 19 JANUARY 7PM AT THE HOCKEY CLUBHOUSE LODER PARK All present and past players, and all interested in the game of hockey are welcome to attend. All Executive Positions will be declared vacant, however the Association is fortunate to have Gary Toshach once again volunteer for the role of President. 2016 will be both a year of change and development for the Club which we hope will see the game strengthen for both our juniors and seniors, and promote strong and sustainable pathways for our talented players. In 2016 the Association is again committed to supporting the Mens and U18 Boys Tomahawks Team playing in the Cairns competition and are proud to announce the introduction of a U18 Girls Tomahawks Team. This year we will also be introducing a new and dynamic local competition for our juniors, inclusive of Minkies/Hook In2 Hockey for our new players aged between 4 and 9; Division II for 9-12 year olds and Division I for 13-16 year olds. All games will be mixed with a strong selection process occurring preseason to ensure equity in team skills and levels. Open Ladies/Mens will be welcoming 17 year olds into the more challenging senior games and Veterans will capture from 35 years on. The Committee believes that with the support of our members 2016 will be a year of success and achievement for all. Prior to our sign on days on the 14th and 21st of February an advertisement will be placed in the paper detailing the fee schedule and other important information so please look out for this. Finally we look forward to seeing you at the AGM and participating in a great year of hockey!

The Cairns District Women’s Rugby League will administer the female club competition working closely with the local junior leagues, and recently held their AGM with the committee excited by the opportunities a regular season competition will present. “We are hopeful of a competition format with under 12’s, 14’s, 16’s and 18’s in 2016,” CDWRL President Leisha Kennedy said. “A number of clubs have indicated they will welcome girls registering for the 2016 season, and we look forward to this step forward for rugby league in our region and girls wishing to register for 2016 can contact their local junior Rugby League club for details.” The league is also inviting girls 13 to 18 years to trial for teams to travel to Mackay in early March for the ‘All Female Club Carnival’. The trials will be held each Tuesday afternoon during February at Jones Park, Mann Street, Westcourt from 5.30pm. For more information contact Cairns District Women’s Rugby League President Leisha Kennedy on 0417 171 931.

A torrential downpour failed to ruin a great day of cricket in Mareeba on Sunday as the Bandits came up against Barron River in the limited over’s fixture. The welcomed rain saw the match reduced to 21 over’s, six more than the required number to constitute a match. The bandits went in to bat first and were very impressive, reaching 4 wickets for 177 runs. Best of the batsmen was Luke Lamborn who top scored with 59, just pipping Captain Branden Payne by 1 run on 58. In reply Barron River was washed away as they could only manage 81 runs from their designated 21 over’s. Best of the bowlers for the Bandits was Rowan Foxwell 3 wickets for 5 runs off 3 over’s and young Kobe Martin put in an excellent performance with 2 wickets for 5 runs off 2 over’s.

Thousands of racegoers attended Mareeba’s Boxing Day Races in 2015.
A close finish on Boxing Day. Photo by Peter Roy.
Record race days end 2015 on a high Racing ended on a high in 2015 with record race meets at both Atherton and Mareeba Turf Clubs. The Christmas Races, held at the Atherton Turf Club on December 19, saw 1,100 people in attendance and the Boxing Day races in Mareeba had more than 2,000 racegoers come through the gates. Both record race days for the local clubs which proves country racing is alive and well on the Tablelands. Racegoers from near and far supported the race days with people from Cooktown, Port Douglas, Cairns and as far as interstate joining in the fun. On Boxing Day in Mareeba the recent rain and the threat of storms did not dampen the spirits of the racegoers that came out for a great day of country racing, fashion and fun – both on and off track. The Boxing Day races, now a highlight on the racing calendar, delivered on all levels with serious punters and casual racegoers
turning out in their finest in a show of support for country racing. As always, a good day was had on track with great thoroughbred racing on show over five races. The region’s best horses, trainers and jockeys descended on Mareeba with one of the largest numbers of nominations to date – 62 in total, over the five races. Atherton also had a successful day on track with a quality five race program. Off track on Boxing Day racegoers were kept entertained all day and night with live music, fun for the kids with a jumping castle and waterslide and a key event of the day, fashions on the field. For a country race club, the fashion steaks are always high in Mareeba and Boxing Day was no different; with children, ladies and men all dressed to impress. With categories for all ages, the event kicked off with a fashion parade for the future fashionistas. Children from as young as one, strutted their stuff on the main stage for all to see. This children’s parade was followed by the highly contested teen’s section, followed by the men’s and ladies, with
show stopping fashion on display in each section. As it was Boxing Day a category for the casual racegoers was also introduced with fabulous cool and casual outfits on display. Despite recent proposed cuts by the Queensland Government that could cripple the industry, country racing is well and truly alive and continuing to grow on the Tablelands, with both social and economical benefits for all. Racing supports not only the clubs, trainers and jockeys but extents to the farmers, vets, fashions designers, hairdressers, beauticians and so on. The Mareeba Turf Club launched a petition at the Boxing Day races to ‘Save our Country Racing’ with 500 signatures gained to date. The next country race meet will be held in Mareeba on Australia Day, with a five race program from 1pm, following the Mareeba Shire Australia Day Awards ceremony.
Racing Queensland disparity is clear With the Magic Millions race day held at the weekend, KAP Member for Dalrymple Shane Knuth and Member for Mt Isa Rob Katter, want to highlight the disparity in funding between country and urban meets in the wake of further cuts. “There is clear disparity within the racing industry that needs to be taken into account when considering the restructure – Country races are completely different to those in a metropolitan area,” Mr Knuth said. “The Magic Millions race day carries $10.2 million in prize money, which is the amount it costs to fund all of country racing in Queensland
www.theexpressnewspaper.com.au
for a whole year.” Mr Knuth said the Government needs to realise the Magic Millions race day on the Gold Coast is set to receive $35 million over the next seven years from Racing Queensland. “The government saw the concerns and frustrations at a rally held in Doomben in December last year – the communities are clearly very concerned and will not stand for cuts,” Mr Knuth said. “It is clear the recommendations in the ‘Track to Sustainability’ report will have dire consequences right across the racing industry, especially in rural and regional Queensland.”
Member for Mt Isa Rob Katter said Country Racing serves a multitude of purposes that need to be recognised. “If racing is to have a future in our state, we need to have genuine engagement with participants and stakeholders,” Mr Katter said. “It is fair to say that QLD bred horses make up a large portion of the horses racing in the country and a reduction to country meetings would have a direct impact on the Queensland breeding industry.” Mr Katter said it was imperative the government factor in the greater economic activity that is generated as a result of these country race
meetings. “There is absolutely no consideration/weighting given to the importance of country race meetings both socially and economically,” Mr Katter said. “At present, country racing participants have to pay $173 in starters’ fees while competing for only $4,500 of winning prize money. In comparison, their city counterparts pay only $225 when their first placed prize money is $45,000; and yet the economic significance of a race meet in smaller towns is tenfold.” KAP will continue to push for industry stability and highlight the double standard applied to regional clubs in the state.
