Man charged over Atherton armed robbery A 24-year-old Tolga man has been charged by police over an armed robbery that took place at a computer game store at a shopping centre on Cook Street Saturday morning. It was alleged the man entered the store at 11.45am on May 21 armed with a knife. Police further alleged rhe man demanded money from an employee before fleeing the scene with a sum of cash. No one was physically injured. The man was found in a motel in Mareeba just before midnight Saturday. He appeared at Mareeba Magistrates Court on May 22.

Yungaburra markets’ 40th birthday party This weekend the Yungaburra Markets will be celebrating its 40th birthday with a party. In 1977, so the story goes, Bruce Jones, Principal of Yungaburra State School, had visited a market down south and enjoyed it so much that he was determined that Yungaburra should have a regular monthly market as well. 40 years on, it is going from strength-tostrength and has funded many local projects. On Saturday the birthday bash will kick off with the markets in the morning and an evening Picnic in the Park starting at 4.30pm. Head along with a picnic blanket, pack a picnic basket or enjoy the food stalls that will be there under the twinkling lights of the lanterns that each of the students have made especially for the occasion. There will be entertainment, face painting, a petting zoo, food vans, a birthday cake, and a movie – Paper Planes. The students of Yungaburra School will also be selling dessert plates and popcorn all funds going to Student Council.

RFDS hoping to raise money for defibrillator The Tablelands Royal Flying Doctors Service (RFDS) Near & Far Auxiliary will be having a market stall at this week’s Rotary Field Days. The group is hoping to raise funds to buy a new defibrillator unit for the RFDS planes at the Cairns Base. These units cost from $30,000 per unit. The stall will hold souvenirs, crafts, raffle tickets and more over the three days of the event. “We rely on the generous donations etc from the general public to’Keep the Flying Doctor Flying’,” said a spokesperson for the group.

Gracyn Masterson is hoping to raise awareness of positive body images.

Gracyn’s bid for Miss World title By Rebecca Wallis

It’s a far cry from life on a rural Cape York cattle station, but for 19-year-old Gracyn Masterson, aiming for the title of Miss World is an important part of who she is. The young model was plucked from obscurity at 13 and given a modelling contract which led to lucrative cat walk jobs around the country. But these days Gracyn is more focussed on promoting a positive body image which she is keen to portray when she stands up in front of the Miss World Australia judges next month for the Queensland finals. “I love this competition because

they’ve eliminated the bikini section and they’re really focussing on beauty with intelligence,” says the former Mareeba State High School student. “It’s not just about looks anymore. A few years ago when I was modelling everything was about being skinny and having the right look but it’s not good for your mental health. It’s a very hard industry to be in – you can’t be perfect all the time.” Three years ago Gracyn took a break from modelling to focus on being a personal trainer. She now runs her own business in Cairns and is dedicated to helping people get fit and healthy and have a positive attitude towards the way they look.

“When I left Brisbane I was too skinny,” she says. “It was so hard for me. I felt they were expecting too much so I took a break.” But hearing about Miss World Australia piqued Gracyn’s interest as a competition that is just as much about the person as it is about the body. The Queensland finals will take place on June 16 in Brisbane where her whole family will attend. If successful she will go through to the Miss World Australia finals in November. Keen to support her home town, Gracyn will be wearing a white cocktail dress in Brisbane from Mareeba’s Sonlia Fashion, as well as a ‘glamour dress’ from a Townsville designer.

$195,000 raised

In its 14th year the Great Wheelbarrow Race broke with tradition and kicked off proceedings in the place where it usually all ends. Hundreds of competitors and supporters arrived in Chillagoe Friday morning ignoring the rain to line up early and get a start on the three day race. Teams and individuals ranging from high school kids to pensioners stood shoulder to shoulder ready to brave the conditions, keen to make it to the end in one piece. Some were in it for the win, others for the fun, but everyone was there to raise money for a cause. Mareeba councillor and head of the Wheelbarrow Race Nipper Brown said the response from the Mareeba people as the race came to a close was outstanding. “It’s too early to tell whether the change in format has been a success or not,” he said. “We’ll be looking at it in the next few weeks. There were a few teething problems, but this is the first year we’ve had the finish at the International Club and its been fantastic.” Some locals were reportedly keen to enter this year to experience the change in direction and run through the finish flags on home turf. Flipping the route made no impact on the race’s success with to date $195,000 raised almost equalling last year’s figure. OVERALL WINNERS 2017:

Overall winners of the 2017 Great Wheelbarrow Race ‘The Boys from the Bush’.

And the winner is ... While many of the teams racing on the weekend have been training hard in preparation for the gruelling three day Wheelbarrow Race, ten young blokes from Mareeba did the opposite – with surprising results. Boys from the Bush took home the winning trophy on Sunday and proudly boasted they had done so with next to no training days. In fact, one of their team members was only recruited a week ago. But they had confidence on their side as they were the reigning champs from the 2016 race. The win was nearly stolen from them by past winners the Fit Bucks who made a valiant return to this year’s race after a few years off. The two teams pushed hard to the finish

with the Fit Bucks finishing just eight seconds slower than the winners. In his acceptance speech, Boys from the Bush team captain Blake Stankovich praised his rivals. “The second day is the biggest day by far and they say that is when you separate the men from the boys and that is when the boys walked away with the victory,” he said. “So a massive shout out to the Fit Bucks.” The team, whose ages range from 16 to 22, announced they would be donating their fundraising to the Indie Rose Foundaion. “Thank you to our sponsors,” said Mr Stankovich. “And we couldn’t have done it without our bus driver Carl Brown and the rest of our support team.”

Revisions to KUR-World master plan ‘ridiculous’

Kuranda residents are not happy about revisions that have been made to plans for KURWorld – an integrated ‘eco’ resort. Claiming the resort is “shonky” and “appallingly inappropriate” for the region, locals were hoping revisions to the plan would be more ecologically responsible. Instead, they say, KUR-World 2.0 “would be even more disruptive to the local environment and community than the initial version.” “To quote a past Queensland senator, it’s like polishing a turd,” said Cheryl Tonkin. “We call on Ken Lee to abandon the KURWorld proposal now – and on the State and Federal Government to ensure this grotesque folly goes no further”. If eventually approved by the State Government and Mareeba Shire Council, KUR-World could feature a 3.5 and 5 star resort, 18 hole golf course, residential villas, education campus and business facilities and a health and a wellbeing centre. A start date for Stage 1 is pencilled in for June 2018 at the earliest. But a group of local protestors have been fighting the development every step of the way, claiming the resort will impact negatively on Kuranda and is unwanted. “This land is currently and properly zoned “rural” which precludes mega-developments such as ‘KUR-World’” said Jo Martin. “In my opinion Mr Lee should never have gotten beyond base one with his ludicrous proposal.” “Such an inappropriate proposal that’s contrary to current planning instruments such as the MSC2016 and FNQ Regional Plan 2009-31, should never have become the subject of environmental impact assessment. Blind Freddy can see this mega-development proposal would wreck nationally-significant environmental values.”

Katter’s call to Mackay doctors The member for Kennedy is reaching out to try and fill Mareeba’s shortfall By Rebecca Wallis Bob Katter has written to doctors in Mackay asking them to come and work in Mareeba in a bid to help boost the town’s undersupply. Taking advice from professionals, the Member for Kennedy said the town had suffered a loss of population which might make some of the

doctors consider relocating. “We have written to every doctor in Mackay,” he said. “There’s been a very significant loss of population in the Mackay area and if there are doctors in Mackay considering relocation, then we are seeing if we can get doctors from there to come up to Mareeba.” Mr Katter said he was also considering approaching doctors in Townsville. “The simple, easy, quick way out is if we can get some doctors here to bulk bill,” he said. “But it would be deadly if we asked the current medical teams to bulk bill. We would lose the doctors we’ve got.” A second option, he said is to get the Government to pay doctors to come and work in Mareeba to bulk bill in private practices. “I think we’ve got to look at the State and Federal government paying some doctors – government employees – to set up in private practice in places where there’s no bulk bill-

ing,” he said. “I think this has got to happen. We have got to create a new animal.” Mr Katter said he was floored by the response to the Save Mareeba Hospital meeting on May 2. Despite word from the Cairns and Hinterland Health and Hospital Service (CHHHS) that nothing at the hospital will change and all services will be funded to remain operational, Mr Katter said he will fight hard to help boost medical options in the town. “What I’m watching here is the abolition of the free hospital system,” said Federal Member for Kennedy Bob Katter outside the hospital last week. “This is looking after or fellow man. This is the guts of it.” Local advocate group ‘Save Mareeba Hospital’ are waiting on a response from Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk whom they wrote to among other key politicians. They are also collecting signatures for a petition.

Government prioritises mental health in recent budget

Boost to mental health services

By Rebecca Wallis

The Federal Government’s decision to prioritise mental health in its recent budget has been welcomed by local advocates, although they say more needs to be allocated to ‘grass roots’ intervention. People in regional areas with mental health problems will now get access to psychiatrists in the city via a new $9 million telehealth program and a further $9 million will be spent installing barriers and fencing in high risk suicide locations. Lifeline will also get $2 million in extra funding as part of a suicide prevention program. People with a mental illness who don’t qualify for care under the NDIS will continue to get access to psychosocial support programs thanks to an $80 million injection of funding, with another $15 million will be spent on mental health research. Margie Bestmann, whose husband Dr Mark Bestmann lost his life last year, says the funding is sorely needed on the Tablelands. “Our local population has increased as has the demand for mental health care provision, yet there has not been an appropriate increase in the number of services nor their staffing quotas to effectively keep pace,” she said. “If we are to continue encouraging people to reach out and seek help then we need to be able to provide adequate services and staff to support them.” But Julie Theakston, manager at Mareeba Community Centre, said the money would be best spent on early intervention programs, not

necessarily on the programs the budget has outlined. “Sometimes it needs to be picked up early to be effective,” she said. “It can be about providing people with social interaction and mechanisms and techniques for dealing with stress. The earlier we can get in there and deal with those issues, then it doesn’t have to go any further.” Mrs Bestmann agreed: “Rebuilding community connectedness is a good place to start. “It can help to diminish stigma as well as the disconnection and distress that is consequently experienced by people who live with a mental health disorder. It can help those people who are feeling isolated and alone to reconnect with others and their community. Their self-esteem

can improve and so can their self-confidence.” Although the funding for programs such as telehealth systems, suicide barriers and Lifeline will not go unutilised, the general feeling locally is that more needs to be done in the early stages to combat the devastating effects of mental health illnesses. “Put funding towards evidence-based activities as well as innovative methods that can build community connectedness,” says Mrs Bestmann. “Art projects, community edible gardens, arts festivals, local craft shows, yoga in the park etc.” Connecting young people with their community should also be made a priority, as is working together to combat the issue. “We need a collaborative unified approach to the services and their delivery,” said Mrs Bestmann. “We need a strong long term model.”

in his work as a volunteer in P&C and junior sporting groups. Mr Dick said almost 90 people nominated Cairns and Hinterland as their preferred board during a public expression of interest process and the task of selecting eight candidates was a tough one. Deputy Chair is Luckbir Singh, a Cairns law firm partner. Members include Tracey Wilson, a director of a consulting firm, CEO of Ports North Christopher Boland, Managing Director of The 20/20 Group Jodi Peters, clinical specialist Sean McMannus, indiginous health executive Nancty Long and James Cook University professor Lee Stewart.

Tractor nostalgia

Prisoners make ‘Buddy Benches’ for Joe Trimarchi Field Days Lotus Glen Correctional Centre Prison Industries has been busy constructing the benches, which will provide some much needed respite for visitors to Field Days as they wonder through rows of exhibitor stalls. Once Field Days are over, Rotary will then donate the benches to Mareeba Hospital’s children’s playground and several schools in the region. The idea of American school student Christian Bucks in 2013, a “Buddy Bench” can be used by any child feeling lonely in the playground to signal to other students that they need a friend to talk to or would like to be involved in activities. The concept has since taken off around the world, with Trinity Beach State School student Charlie Cooper helping to drive the idea locally back in 2014. The benches attracted the interest of the Field Days Committee in December 2014, who subsequently contacted Lotus Glen to see if they would be interested in constructing some for the event. Lotus Glen carpentry trade instructor Jeffrey Green said the facility was happy to help after building their first batch of Buddy Benches for Field Days in 2015. “Quite frankly, the prisoners love doing them. We do a lot of repetitive stuff here for other clients so to get something that’s different for them where they can go from cutting them out to seeing them completed, they really enjoy it,” he said. The end result has delighted Lotus Glen industries manager Larry Guilfoyle, who is full of praise for the prisoners and their commitment to the project. “There’s a real sense of pride for the guys knowing that their work is going into the local community,” he said.

is passionate about his vintage tractors

WHEN Joe Trimarchi gets behind the wheel of his little Massey Ferguson 135 tractor, 50 years of memories come flooding back. The Tolga cane farmer is entering the Rotary John Deere Tractor Pull for the first time at this year’s Rotary FNQ Field Days and can’t wait to give it a crack. “It’s just the nostalgia and the good old memories when I think back,” Mr Trimarchi said of driving his vintage tractors. “I get a bit emotional when I think about growing up in my younger days on the farm with my dad and uncles with these tractors.” Mr Trimarchi is also entering his International Farmall A514 tractor, a staple of the local agricultural industry in the 1960s. “Dad had this model and previous models,” he said. “It was considered the vital link in farming. If you didn’t have one of them, you weren’t serious.” Run for the first time at Field Days in 2013, the Tractor Pull involves either a “vintage” or “classic tractor” pulling a sled along a 120m track. All tractors competing must be twowheel-drive. Agricultural equipment supplier Honeycombes will supply the “pull-back tractor” for

Tolga cane farmer Joe Trimarchi with his Massey Ferguson 135 tractor, which will be competing in the Rotary John Deere Tractor Pull at this year’s Rotary FNQ Field Days.

the event, which will pull the sled back to the start of the 120m track once each competing tractor has a run. Engine capacity categories have been boosted for Field Days in 2017, with tractors competing in categories ranging from 20 horsepower right up to 200 horsepower and potentially even higher, depending on numbers. But small and mighty is the aim of the game for Mr Trimarchi, with his Massey Ferguson’s four cylinder Perkins engine pumping out 45hp while the International can hit 51hp with its four cylinders. The farming veteran has spent thousands restoring his two vintage workhorses to their former glory.

“From having a simple spring in the seat to being equipped with satellite navigation, the way things have advanced in tractors is incredible,” Mr Trimarchi said. Making its debut at Field Days this year, the Garden Tractor Pulling Display is an exciting addition to the main event. Essentially modified ride-on lawn mowers with the deck removed, garden tractors under 15hp and over 15hp will participate in the demonstration. As with the Tractor Pull, the Garden Tractor Pulling Display will also feature its own sled to pull. Children as young as six will even be allowed to have a crack.

‘Huge need’ for dedicated palliative care room

Staff and supporters of Mareeba Gardens Blue Care are hoping to raise $38,000 for a dedicated palliation care room.

$38,000 sought to make final days easier By Rebecca Wallis A team of dedicated fundraisers are passionate about raising funds for a dedicated palliative care unit at Mareeba Gardens Blue Care. Places are sparse for those who desperately need these services and those with terminal illness have nowhere locally where they can receive appropriate care while spending precious time with loved ones. Initially

this room will be provided for residents that are within the home, and as a long term goal accept admissions to local residents who require palliative care. “There is a huge need for palliation here,” said Samantha Pitman from Mareeba’s Blue Care. “We have long wait lists in the community for people needing this type of care and currently the families have to take on the impact of that care, which is of-

ten very stressful for them.” The room will provide a place of rest and also somewhere where the family can stay with them over night and hold their hand. The facility has been estimated to cost around $38,000 which will include a small kitchen, reconstruction for the unit to be developed and a family relaxation area outside the room where family can support each other.

“We’ve raised about $4,000 already,” said Ms Pitman. “We’re reaching out to local businesses and the community to try and raise the rest.” A fundraising fete will be held on July 8 at the Macrae Street facility. “It will be a fun day with creative stalls and music,” said Ms Pitman. “We’re hoping it will be a celebration day where we can announce that we’ve raised the full amount.”

Darren Magigan is battling blood cancer.

Friends rally for Darren Madigan THIS Friday legendary football player Greg Dowling will be at the Barron Valley Hotel in Atherton to help raise much needed funds for Darren Madigan. Atherton local Darren was a high profile radio sports broadcaster for the ABC on the Gold Coast covering a number of different sports until he was cut down by a series of heart attacks which led to him undergoing a heart transplant some years ago. Since then he has also contracted blood cancer and deals with a multitude of ailments which keep him in constant pain on a daily basis. His condition is terminal. Money raised on Friday will help to make the time Darren has left as comfortable and as enjoyable as possible. It will go towards clearing off some of his medical bills and help him fulfil some bucket list wishes. Greg Dowling will be speaking at the event which kicks off at 12 noon.

Tolga inventor hoping for a win Richard’s rain gauge entered in Field Days competition

Richard Hole from Tolga has invented a new rain gauge that has advantages over other rain gauges. The Accu-Read-Easy is easier to read and empty, and is more accurate with large amounts of rain. Richard has entered it into the inventors contest at The Rotary FNQ Field Days and will be displaying it along with his other inventions. He will also have information about his other plans for ideas and groups to help the community. Richard’s Accu-Read-Easy Rain Gauge has an accurate measuring cylinder that holds 80mm or over 3” of rain before it overflows into another container. However, the measuring cylinder of other commonly sold accurate rain gauges only hold about 25mm or 1 inch of rain. The Accu-Read-Easy’s measuring cylinder is not obscured by an outer cylinder like in other rain gauges. The black graduations on a white background make it easy to read from many meters away. This makes it possible to get an accurate reading while staying dry even when it is raining outside. The Accu-Read-Easy also has a unique feature that makes it very easy to empty without having to tip out the measuring cylinder. When a hinge on the bottom is released it

Richard Hole with his new invention, the Accu0Read-Easy Rain Gauge.

opens a valve to enable the cylinder to empty. The cylinder has a tube connected near the top to enable extra rainfall to overflow into a larger container or bottle. You can choose the size of the bottle or use your own. A large bottle could enable the recording of thousands of millimeters of rain. Richard is seeking people to trial, manufacture and market his inventions.

He is also seeking people who are interested in recording the weather in our area, and can provide instruments. Additionally, he is trying to find or form a database of honest manufacturers, investors and distributors that could help inventors. See Richard’s website at truesolutions.info . You can also contact him by phone on 4095 5447 or 4095 4354 or richard.hole@truesolutions.info .

DIMBULAH LIONS FESTIVAL SATURDAY 27TH MAY 2017

Dimbulah’s ‘festival of the year’ – not to be missed! DIMBULAH is set to come alive with food, entertainment and the best of festival fun this Saturday, May 27, with the 2017 Lions Festival set to captivate the crowd. An action-packed night of entertainment is planned, kicking off with the famous downtown street parade at 5pm. An exciting line up of entertainment has been organised for the event, which will culminate with the crowning of the ‘Festival Queen and King’ at the end of the night, followed by an amazing display of fireworks. Dimbulah Lions Club president Eddie Toffanello said this year’s event will be bigger and better with the great line up of entertainment planned. “In addition to regular performers, like the Chinese dancers,

The Chinese Dancers are just one of the many performances this Saturday night at the annual Dimbulah Lions Festival. PHOTO BY PETER ROY.

we also have local country music artist Becci Nethery as a special guest performer,” he said. “This year we also have a number of entrants in the queen competition – with five queen entrants and two king entrants vying for the crowns. A major attraction of the festival is the famous food village and festival goers will not be disappointed with the vast array of cultures represented in the various food stands at the festival. “It would not be a festival without the food village,” he said. It will be a favourite as always with a series of community organisations running food stalls on the night to feed the hungry crowd. After the fireworks, the festival will continue late into the night

with a live band and bar open till late. The annual event is a fantastic opportunity for local organisations to participate and be a part of the festival – it is Dimbulah’s unique way of serving its community and raising valuable funds. “It is also the centennial year of Lions International, so this year’s festival is extra special. Festival organisers would like to recognise the outstanding support received from several sponsors across a multitude of levels. “Without our sponsors this event would not be possible,” said Mr Toffanello. Come on out to Dimbulah this Saturday for a great night of entertainment and fun for the whole family to enjoy.

DIMBULAH LIONS FESTIVAL SATURDAY 27TH MAY 2017 A message from the President of Dimbulah Lions...

“Where there’s a need, there’s a Lion.” Lions Clubs International is the largest service club organisation in the world with 1.4 million members performing valuable services in 210 countries around the globe. Lions are friends, family and neighbours who share a core belief that: community is what we make it. Over the last century, Lions Clubs have worked to improve their communities through projects and programs. Each club is unique in how it serves. The festival held annually in May, is Dimbulah’s unique way of serving its community and raising valuable funds. As we celebrate the Centennial of Lions Clubs International in 2017, we now know that our forebears were right. Service is what makes a Lion. It’s what we do. It’s who we are and like the Lions of yesteryear, we put service first. Over the course of its history, Lions Clubs International has provided a strong, collective voice to inform and influence public policy at local, state and national level.

monetary contributions and assistance with labour. The enthusiasm and inkind support from community members and businesses at festival time is heartwarming and at the same time, crucial for the success of the festival. Each year we have our Gold, Silver and Bronze sponsors coming on board to ensure the festival takes place and often these people are one in the same, year in and year out. Their commitment and generosity is truly admirable and hugely appreciated. This year, the Dimbulah and Mareeba branches of Bendigo Bank, TGT Home Timber and Hardware and Springmount Racing are our Gold Sponsors. The Mareeba Shire Council is our Silver Sponsor and our Bronze Sponsors for 2017 are Dimbulah Foodworks, CRT, Casali's and Sun Water. This Saturday May 27, will be a fun-filled evening of top entertainment, fantastic food, riveting rides for the kids, displays, dancing, sensational music, crowning of the King and Queen and explosive fireworks to finish. Dimbulah will surely be the place to be.

Lions Clubs International continuously works to highlight issues affecting the community and align public policy initiatives to address civicsocial needs. The Dimbulah Lions Club is very proud of its close-knit little community and all the efforts its people make to keep Dimbulah a happy, comforting and supportive place to live. The Dimbulah Lions Club particularly takes great pride in maintaining traditions throughout its history, as well as evolving into the 21st century and adjusting to the ever-changing world and lifestyle in which we have all been drawn into. The festival is always strongly supported by local businesses within our district and we are perpetually grateful for their support. Without this generosity, the club would be unable to stage such a special event as this, nor service the Dimbulah community as we would wish. The month of May is particularly jam-packed with events and despite being frequently called upon with requests for donations, small businesses in our area continue to financially support the Lions Club in their endeavours to service the community. 5 garlic cloves, minced 8 bacon strips, cooked and diced 1/4 crushed red pepper flakes 1 cup cream 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 cup Parmesan cheese, shredded 100g fresh spinach 250g penne pasta

1. In a large skillet, on high heat, heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil until hot. Add prawns and cook on one side on high heat for 1 minute. While it cooks, sprinkle the uncooked side of shrimp with salt, paprika and Italian seasoning. Flip and cook on the other side for 1 minute on high heat. Reduce heat to medium. Once cooked remove prawns from the pan and keep warm. 2. To the same pan, add chopped tomatoes, garlic, half the bacon, crushed red pepper flakes. Mix everything, and cook for about 1 minute on medium heat. 3. Add cream and bring to boil. Add another 1/4 teaspoon salt, stir. Only after cream starts boiling, add Parmesan cheese. Once the cheese start melting, immediately reduce heat to medium and stir, while simmering, until the cheese completely melts and the sauce becomes creamy. Then, reduce heat to low, add fresh spinach, cover with the lid and let the sauce sit, simmering on very low heat, until the spinach wilts. 4. Add cooked pasta to the skillet with the sauce, stir everything. Add cooked prawns and remaining half of bacon to the skillet. Season with more salt and red pepper flakes if necessary. ENJOY!

Bulls go down in last minutes The Mareeba Bulls have been left to ponder what if, after totally outplaying the Stratford Dolphins for forty-four minutes before thirty seconds of mayhem turned the game on its head. The Bulls started the match well and were dominating proceedings from the first whistle. They were rewarded with the opportunity to take the lead early on when David Ruiz had the chance from the penalty spot after a Stratford handball, but Dolphins keeper Nathan Haydon saved the attempt from Ruiz. The Bulls were made to pay a few minutes later when Joe Rusch put the home side in front with a pinpoint head from a Dolphins attacking raid, but the Bulls bounced back almost immediately with Steven Cater scoring to bring the scores level.

As the first half drew to a close, the Bulls remained on top, but the match was turned on its head in the 44th minute, with the match official handing out successive yellow cards to David Ruiz and Wayne Srhoj. A second yellow card was then issued to Srhoj and resulting in an automatic red for unprofessional behaviour. In the space of thirty seconds to the disbelief of the Bulls players and spectators, Mareeba went down to ten men. The second half resumed with the Bulls showing their usual grit with a player down, but the visiting side showed plenty of fight and character to still look the better side. The Bulls were again dealt a second blow midway through the second half with a Dolphins handball that was missed by the match referee

but was consequently awarded by the linesman resulting in the home side taking a 2-1 lead. The worst was yet to come when Ruiz was shown his second yellow for a challenge and was sent from the field leaving the Bulls to play out the match with nine players on the field. Despite fighting hard it was always going to be a battle and the Dolphins took advantage of the visitors lack of discipline to score a further three goals to come out 5-1 winners against the depleted Bulls. In the closing stages of the Match, Bulls Coach Alex Srhoj and assistant Marcello Savaglio were also sent from the technical area. In other matches the reserves lost 2-1, while the ladies had an outstanding win 10-2.

Chillagoe rodeo The two day event held on May 13 and 14, was attended by more than 500 spectators who were treated to a non-stop extravaganza of action ending with the open bull ride under lights on Saturday. Nominations in the bull riding and saddle bronc events were stronger than ever this year with top level competitors coming from as far away as Tasmania chasing prizemoney of $1500 for each event.

Roosters go down to Sharks

Roosters under 19’s Cameron Rudkin.

The Atherton Roosters have fallen to their worst performance for 2017 after going down to the visiting Mossman Sharks 46-12 at Roosters Stadium, on Saturday night. After delivering the first points to be up 6-0 early the Roosters fell away and the Sharks took a 16-0 lead to the halftime break. The sharks continued to build their lead after the break and went onto shut the Roosters out of the match in a eight tries to two victory. Roosters coach Dean Howard was critical of his teams effort after the loss.

Gladiators win at home It was a close call for the Gladiators against defending premiers Ivanhoes on Saturday night at Davies Park, but the Mareeba team once again came out on top. The round 9 game was won 20-18 by the home team who scored five tries. “We knew they’d be strong,” said coach Tye Ingebrigsten. “It was a good game.” The win has strengthened the Gladiators’ resolve going forward. “We’ve got plenty of confidence going into the rest of the year” said Ingebrigtsen. “We’ve won six games already this year.” Junior player Kienan Grogan was only playing his second game for the club but managed to pick up Man of the Match after scoring two tries. Next week they’re playing Cairns Brothers “It should be a good test,” said Ingebrigsten. “They’re right behind us on the ladder so it should be a good match.”

“Losing at home and the way we played was unacceptable,” Howard said. “We deserved to win that game but we didn’t compete. It’s our worst effort for the year and we must get better.” Mossman also won the reserve grade over the Roosters 42-8, while the under 19 match went to the Roosters 46-0. This Saturday the Atherton Roosters play away at Tully. Weekend results: Innisfail 36 vs Suburbs 12, Yarrabah 24 vs Tully 16, Mareeba 20 vs Ivanhoes 18, Kangaroos 36 vs Edmonton 30.
