That winning feeling HUNDREDS of punters have celebrated Mareeba Turf Club’s first race day of the season in style with a ton of fun, food and entertainment. Cairns jockey Sonja Wiseman (pictured) was one of many to crack a smile on Saturday, helping to highlight Jockey Celebration Day by storming home in race five’s Ian Johns Builder Trophy BenchMark 45 Handicap with thoroughbred “Secrets Own”. There was excitement aplenty both on and off the track, with the thrills and spills of racing matched by the always popular “Fashions on the Field”. PHOTOS – PAGE 25 Photo by Peter Roy

You’re kidding me? By Michael Serenc

A GROUP of Herberton residents are furious the State Government has secretly decided to build a new fire station in their street. The Express can reveal an ageing property on 38 Perkins St was settled last Thursday after being purchased by Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES). But the property, situated on a steep embankment, sits in the middle of a residential neigh-

bourhood. Perkins St resident Lyn Northage said she first heard rumours about the fire station’s location six weeks ago, only for it to be confirmed a few weeks later by the family of the woman who owned the property in question. “I was under the impression that if you buy a block of land, or a property, next to someone, and then you’re going to put in a redevelopment submission, that you actually talk to the people next door,” she said.

The $1.2 million fire station was announced for Herberton in June’s State Budget, replacing the existing station which is now too small. Mrs Northage, who lives across the road from the property purchased by QFES, said several residents had concerns about the new station’s location, highlighted after she conducted a doorto-door survey of 20 residents in her area last Thursday. “The reaction was ‘You’re kidding me’,” she said.

“Is the State Government going to compensate us for the money we’re going to lose on the value of our properties?” Mrs Northage’s neighbours Judy Waters and Angus Greig both backed her call to relocate the fire station elsewhere. While stressing they were supportive of a new fire station for the town, the trio said they were concerned about noise, exposure to hazardous chemicals and property devaluation in their area if the facility was built there. Local business wins award The Jackaroo Motel at the southern entrance of Mareeba has won the TripAdvisor excellence award for 2016. Serena and Chris, the proprietors of the motel, received the award in recognition of continually delivering a quality customer experience. Serena said “We are absolutely thrilled to receive such an award, the comments and reviews we have received from visitors using TripAdvisor has been overwhelming.” “The award was achieved as a team effort by all concerned from management, office and housekeeping staff.” Chris and Serena purchased the Jackaroo motel business in 2014 and over the past two years they have constantly refurbished the motel rooms, introduced free Wi Fi for guests and have made the effort in building relationships with guests as well as offering exceptional service. All this goes towards giving the guests an exceptional holiday experience that they will remember and tell their friends about. “Our guests are our heart and soul of our industry we have won this award by being genuine and giving our all,” said Serena. “Guests can tell when you care, everyone pitches in no matter what your job is helping each other goes a long way and we all support And help each other anyway we can, it’s a team thing.” The management thanked all those who posted the wonderful comments on TripAdvisor which enabled them to receive the prestigious award.

End of an Era In 1947, a young Mareeba family began a dynasty. The Hastie brothers, Bill and Don, went into partnership in a general store bought from Mr Hitch a couple of years after the war and hence for Bill Hastie, began a lifelong career as a general merchant. The purchase included the Hitch’s Family grocery store some platform scales and a T-Model Ford. Also with the purchase was shelving, the red cedar counter, a silky oak refrigerator and a residence. In the early days home deliveries were the lifeblood of the business as very few people had transport. In 1950, the family partnership was dissolved with Bill staying on at the store and Don moving back to the family farm. Bill and his wife Phyllis expanded the store in 1956 to cope with the growing business. Recognising the need for some real estate in the town, the couple proceeded to build what is now well known as the Hastie Centre and it was given that name because Bill occupied the three centre stores of the complex.

Bill and Phyllis’s three daughters, Mary, Robyn and young whipper snipper Yvonne have been running the store since their parents passed away. Having been born into the business and worked there since they were old enough to weigh potatoes, the girls spent most of their time as checkout chicks in the grocery store. “We washed and filled kerosene bottles, packed groceries, cleaned windows, you name it we did it. No time off, no school holidays the store became our lives,” said the trio. “After the grocery era, we learned interior decorating to become furniture and floor covering and soft furnishings sales girls and we loved every minute of it. “But the time has come to give someone else a go, and we would like to wish the new property owners every success in the future. “To our many suppliers and staff over the years thanks for everything and to all the wonderful people of Mareeba and anyone who bought things from us, a big thank you for giving us all those memorable years. God Bless.”

residents furious over fire station FROM Page 1 “We know we need a new fire station but that is not the place,” Ms Waters said. “It’s not as though it’s a real confined area around here.” Mr Greig said the fire station would be nothing but a disruption to nearby residents. “My main concern is disturbances we would probably get at night time,” he said. “I’m a pensioner and we’re in bed at 9pm. They’ve got to go out to accidents and fires at all hours of the day and night.” Mrs Northage said she had written to both Dalyrmple MP Shane Knuth and Tablelands Regional Council Mayor Joe Paronella complaining about the fire station. Mr Knuth said he was disappointed QFES had failed to consult the community about the location of the new fire station and had arranged for department officials to meet with residents tomorrow. “We need the community to participate in a number of consultation meetings, and express their views on where a site could be found for the new fire station,” he said. “I have been communicating with the Tablelands Regional Council and the State Government.” Mr Knuth said he would continue to consult with QFES on the location of the fire station. Mrs Northage said she would also hold a town meeting to gather public support to shift the new station, once the property had a formal sign erected notifying residents of the redevelopment. In a written statement, a QFES spokeswoman confirmed the department had purchased the property and said only now would consultation begin. “The consultation process will involve two rounds of consultation; one including relevant public sector entities and council, and the other will include public notification to the wider com-

munity,” she said. “It is during this consultation period that members of the public can raise any issues that they may have concerning any future capital works.” The spokeswoman said several locations for the fire station were canvassed, but 38 Perkins St “was deemed the most suitable location to support future QFES operations”. “The site is centrally located which will provide fast and efficient responses by auxiliary fire-fighters to attend incidents,” she said. An environmental assessment will also be conducted at the site. RIGHT: Herberton’s existing fire station.

across the region in brief Tablelands sacrifice honoured

Tablelands seniors celebrated

REMEMBERING Tablelands men and women who served in World War II and those who were based on the Atherton Tablelands during the war will be the focus of an anniversary event this Sunday. To be held at Rocky Creek War Memorial Park, “Victory in the Pacific” Day marks 71 years since fighting ceased in the Pacific during World War II. “Every year we host a commemorative event which draws people from across Australia who have military ties to this region,” said Tablelands Regional Council Mayor Joe Paronella. “During the war, the Tablelands area became the largest military base in Australia, and the site at Rocky Creek was the largest military hospital in the Southern Hemisphere. This area is very significant in commemorating Australia’s involvement in WWII.” Committee member Cr Bronwyn Voyce encouraged all ages to attend. “We will have military displays and memorabilia, food stalls, entertainment and a C17 transport flyover which is not to be missed,” she said. “The service will include laying of wreaths, the unveiling and dedication of nine memorial wall plaques to honour former servicemen and women, and a guest speaker. Across the road, Rotary will be conducting tours of the Igloo restoration project.” The Rocky Creek rest area will remain open for self-contained recreational vehicles and caravans during the weekend, however space will be reduced. The Victory in the Pacific commemorative event starts at 12pm with a memorial service commencing at 1pm.

THE contribution of Tablelands seniors will be celebrated at a special expo next week. To be held next Tuesday at Atherton International Club, the Tablelands Regional Council Making Connections Expo will offer seniors information on how to stay active in their local community. “This free event is a chance to catch up with friends, new and old, enjoy a great afternoon tea and cuppa whilst listening to some fantastic local performers,” said Tablelands Regional Council Mayor Joe Paronella. “Exhibitors will provide information on how to be active in our community and what is available locally to assist residents as they become less active, and reliant on some support services. “Most importantly it will provide an avenue for finding out how to continue to play a positive role in our community for our community if you want to remain active, happy and engaged.” The expo will run between 1pm and 4pm and is being held as part of Queensland Seniors Week. Residents are urged to RSVP by this Friday by calling 1300 362 242.

Light show to honour physicist A SPECTACTULAR light show will honour the memory of a world-renowned physicist born in Atherton a century ago. Nobel Prize winner Aleksandr Prokhorov, a national hero in Russia known for his role in helping to invent the laser, will have three laser shows performed in honour of his memory across the North.

To be run by the Australian Institute of Physics, Tablelands residents will be able to view the show locally at Atherton State High School on August 20 from 10am. Mr Prokhorov was born on July 11, 1916 in Atherton, the child of refugee parents fleeing Tsarist Russia. His family subsequently returned to Russia in 1923 following the Russian Revolution, where he would begin his career in physics – in between a decorated stint serving with the Red Army during World War II. Mr Prokhorov died in 2002. The centenary of Mr Prokhorov’s birth will be celebrated in a series of spectacular laser-shows in the region as part of National Science Week.

All smiles for ‘Kids Card’ A NEW type of library card is hoping to appeal to the Tablelands’ younger generation. Tablelands Library Service’s new “Kids Borrower Card” will be issued to children wanting to borrow books at libraries across the shire. Mayor Joe Paronella believes the shire’s children will get a thrill out of having a special customised card to cherish and use when they visit a library. “The Kids Card is designed to encourage children to come and join the library and discover the wonderful world of books and more,” he said. Library Officer Karen Johnson has spent several months liaising with different authors, with the chosen image coming from popular children’s author Mem Fox’s book Let’s Count Goats, illustrated by Jan Thomas. The new cards will be issued to all new junior library members and can be swapped for existing membership cards at any local library in the Tablelands Shire.

Aircraft powerline incidents climb INCIDENTS associated with light aircraft and powerlines in regional Queensland have soared to almost one a month. A helicopter accident involving powerlines near Blackhall recently is the latest in a series of incidents bringing the total to eleven in the past twelve months. “Some of these incidents could have been avoided had property owners had warning markers installed on powerlines that cross their properties – especially where light aircraft are used often,” Ergon Customer Service executive general manager Paul Jordon said. Landowners are reminded to have markers installed to potentially mitigate hazards and risks associated with machinery and aircraft working near powerlines. Ergon has a range of overhead warning markers that can be installed to help identify overhead powerlines – particularly in areas of frequent light aircraft use. “We urge landowners to have them installed to reduce the risk of accidents. The cost for markers and their installation is not expensive and our field staff can install them simply and easily from the ground,” Mr Jordon said. “Those property owners with private powerlines should contact an electrical contractor. Under no circumstances should property owners attempt to install markers on powerlines.” Pilots involved in low level flying operations including aerial application, mustering, hot air ballooning and powered parachutes should establish strategies to maintain adequate situational awareness. Property owners can call 13 74 66 for safety advice.

SPECIAL: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day was celebrated across Cape York last Thursday.

APUNIPIMA Cape York Health Council has helped celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day across the Cape. Residents from Aurukun, Pormpuraaw, Kowanyama, Coen, Mapoon, Mossman Gorge and Wujal Wujal all took part in activities to mark the day last Thursday. The day aims to celebrate the strengths and culture of indigenous children, as well as learn about the crucial impact that community, culture and family play in the life of every Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander child.

This year’s theme for Children’s Day was “My Country, Our Country, We All Belong”, which focused on helping indigenous children feel connected and proud of their culture. “Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture is all about family and cherishing our young ones,” said Baby One Program support officer Faye Humphries. “Having a national day of celebration of our kids is really special and a chance for community to come together.”

EXTRAORDINARY PEOPLE DELIVERING EXTRAORDINARY SERVICE

‘Why still no NBN for Mareeba?’ BAFFLED Kennedy MP Bob Katter has vowed to take Federal Communications Minister Mitch Fifield to task over Mareeba being snubbed by the National Broadband Network (NBN). Mr Katter said he couldn’t understand why Cooktown, with a population of less than 3000 people, had begun construction of their fixed line, “Fibre To The Node” service, while Mareeba was left to languish with substandard copper broadband and fixed wireless. “I am staggered that a town 280km north of Mareeba has got it before they have, and it’s one tenth of Mareeba’s size,” he said. “I will be finding out what exactly is going on…We’ll want some answers to it.” Mr Katter has submitted a formal legislative request to Senator Fifield asking for an explanation as to why Mareeba has been snubbed by the NBN this year. “I don’t think the Minister knows much about it either,” he said. “The NBN is a moving feast for starters and it’s like reading porridge when you ask questions about it.” Mareeba’s NBN fixed line service will be rolled out to 4100 premises in the area during the first half of next year.

At the moment, 1360 premises in Mareeba have access to fixed wireless services, but the technology known to be painfully slow compared to a fixed line. By contrast, neighbouring Atherton is speeding ahead, with more than 2300 residents already able to access a fixed line service and construction underway for a further 3000 residents. An NBN spokeswoman said that the service roll out was prioritised for areas that were “underserved” by existing internet services. That meant a number of factors were taken into account, including “location of construction resources, current service levels, existing broadband infrastructure, growth forecasts and proximity to NBN infrastructure such as the transit network”. Government funding is also a factor. “This of course does not mean we can simultaneously start the rollout in every area of Australia that currently has poor broadband,” the spokeswoman said. “To do so would be very expensive and next to impossible from a

workforce/resource mobilisation perspective.” But Mareeba Chamber of Commerce president Joe Moro questioned why the town was so far down NBN’s priority list for fixed line services. “It is interesting that we have not been hooked up at this stage when it seems like everybody else has,” he said. “The importance of the NBN is it brings a lot of the advantages we now have in modern society to the fingertips of business owners.” Mr Moro urged Mr Katter, as well as the newly elected One Nation Senators for Queensland, to lobby the NBN for a faster rollout in Mareeba.

Cops nab stolen loot A PAIR of alleged thieves have had their crime spree put to an end after a daring raid by Tablelands police last week. Officers from Kuranda’s Tactical Crime Squad, Tablelands Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB) and dog squad arrested two men at Hoey Rd in Speewah in the early hours of Thursday morning. Rangi Fyfe,19, and Oscar Erlandsson, 23, were allegedly responsible for a spate of crimes across the region in recent weeks. The pair were denied bail by Magistrate Thomas Braes in Atherton Magistrates Court on Thursday after being charged with five counts of stealing and three counts of unlawful use of a motor vehicle.

They were remanded in custody and faced court again yesterday. Mareeba Police Senior Constable Aleda Day said dozens of items had been recovered after the raid, including a Toyota Hilux ute, power tools, car keys, clothes, cannabis and other illicit drugs. But she said it was unknown over what period of time the items were stolen and where they came from. Police believe Mr Fyfe is connected to a string of offences beginning in May, including the theft of another ute, jet ski and a caravan. Sen-Constable Day urged any Far North resident who has recently had items stolen but not yet reported it to police to call Policelink on 13 14 44.

Some of the items recovered from two thieves by Tablelands Criminal Investigation Branch after a raid in Speewah last Thursday.

Go pink for a good cause

Mareeba Lioness Club president Lyn Dyer and member Sandy Kelly can’t wait for this Saturday’s Pink Ribbon garden party.

MAREEBA Lioness Club will be dressed to the nines for charity at this Saturday’s Pink Ribbon Day garden party. Lioness members will host the annual event at the Mareeba Turf Club, with all proceeds going to Cancer Council Queensland. “This is an event that will feature the colour pink and there will be a prize for the wearer of the Best Pink Outfit and many other competitions, raffles and prizes as well,” said Lioness Club president Lyn Dyer. “We have organised a programme of entertainment that will suit the wider audience, including a fashion parade by courtesy of Rockmans, a spectacular afternoon tea, dancing,

a live band, Zumba exhibition and many raffle draws as well.” A range of stalls will include plants, craft, sweets, cakes and biscuits and other sought-after fundraising fare. “We ask everyone to bring along their own cup for afternoon and their traditional generous support as we attempt to raise much needed funds for Queensland Cancer Council,” Mrs Dyer said. “We invite everyone to come along, have some fun and help the club raise much needed funds for the Cancer Council Queensland.” Mrs Dyer said the event could not have reached its highly popular status on the Tableland social calendar with-

out the support of businesses and the public of the region. Cancer Council Queensland spokeswoman Katie Clift said those who united in pink make a big difference in the fight against women’s cancers. “Getting involved means we are taking steps to beat cancer and support all women who have been touched by the disease,” she said. “It’s also a great opportunity to reach out to loved ones – ask about their health, encourage them to get screened, lend a helping hand and be a listening ear.” Bookings are essential and tickets are $20 per person at Rockmans Mareeba in Byrnes St. Gates open at 12 noon.

No easy answer to empty shops 10 to 15 shops empty just doesn’t look good.” First National Real Estate Atherton principal Grant McAuliffe disagreed high leasing rates were to blame, pointing to the poor state of the local economy as the primary reason for high vacancy rates in town. “It’s not the rents that are keeping people out of business, it’s a lack of trade or ability to push a business that’s causing this,” he said. “The town has been belted around a bit since the recession (Global Financial Crisis).” Mr McAuliffe said leasing rates on properties he dealt with varied between $100 and $250 per square metre. Over in Mareeba, Sibi Girgenti Real Estate sales director Sam Girgenti said small, start-up businesses had no need for an overly large, vacant building. “Smaller shops between 130 and 140 square metres rent very easily and your 60 square metre buildings, provided they’re not dingy, will rent straight away,” he said. “When you get to something that’s 200 square metres, that’s $40,000 plus GST in rent every year – not too many businesses can afford that.”

DIFFERING opinions have emerged on how best to fill the growing number of empty shops in Atherton and Mareeba. High leasing rates, the wrong size buildings, unsustainable businesses and basic supply and demand have all been offered as reasons for the notable lack of empty shopfronts in both towns. Atherton Tableland Chamber of Commerce president Albi Homann put the blame squarely at the feet of landlords in his town’s main street. “We have some landlords who’d rather have their premises empty instead of actually having a tenant in there by reducing the rent a little bit,” he said. “That’s happened too often here in town… The main street in Atherton looks bad, we have too many shops empty. “But it doesn’t help that we have businesses struggling and can’t pull together enough rent for the month.” Mr Homann believed the main street of any town should be a “drawing card”. “If you have a busy main street full of shops, it gives the feeling that the town is doing something, it’s going ahead,” he said. “But having

Mr Girgenti, whose agency sources tenants for landlords, said rates typically varied between $180 and $250 per square metre for general retail space in town, with the highest more than $400 per square metre in arcades and shopping centres. “The rates I believe are marginally low for what it would cost to replace those kind of buildings…For Mareeba, it’s fair,” he said. “There’s two sides to the coin. When somebody owns a building they have very high rates with the council, very high insurance and generally the buildings are old so they need maintenance.” Mr Girgenti added that large buildings were also subject to land tax and additional garbage collection fees. “We need to get people to shop here and not spend out of town,” he said. “Why are people leaving? They’re leaving for variety, quality, service and price. Until the businesses here compete on that level, people will continue to leave.”

Festival to miss main man NEVER in his wildest dreams did Giuliano Cordenos think Mareeba would evolve into the thriving multicultural hub it is today. But after arriving in the town way back in 1961 as a young Italian immigrant, it’s fair to say the grandfatherof-three has seen a lot of changes. “I’d never shift from here for all the money in the world,” Mr Cordenos said. “It’s the weather and the friendliness of the people.” Mareeba’s Multicultural Festival will miss one of its biggest personalities when it returns to Arnold Park this year. After 18 years as festival organiser, Mr Cordenos will be away in Italy as about 40 nationalities come together to celebrate the town’s cultural diversity. “I’m upset because it’s the first time I’m missing the festival,” he said. “But I’m taking my grandkids to Italy to show them where I was born.”

Mr Cordenos said he loved being able to bring Mareeba together each year, with about 8000 people visiting the festival last year alone. “It’s so popular now,” he said. “Mareeba’s got 64 different nationalities and we all live in harmony.” Free raffles, food, music, dance and entertainment will be on display at this year’s event. And in a first for the festival, indigenous dancers from Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Park will be performing. To keep things interesting, a new act will be performed by a different nationality every quarter of an hour, finished off by the always popular “Zorba the Greek Finale” dance. State Minister for Multicultural Affairs Grace Grace will also be attending the festival, which is being held during Queensland Multicultural Week. The event will be held at Arnold Park on August 27 from 9:30am to 5pm.

Drones take off in Mareeba

A NEW wave of exciting model drones are taking over a Mareeba flying field. The Model Aero Sports Club Of Tropical North Queensland (MASCOTNQ) is ushering in a new wave of pilots with the booming popularity of insanely fast “First Person View” (FPV) drones. “Drones are a growing sport throughout the world as everything is cheapening and becoming more available,” Mr Towne said. “FPV racing is developing throughout the world and they’ve

just had the world championships in Dubai.” Closer to home, MASCOTNQ has nominated drone flyer Matt Krolik to attend Australia’s inaugural 2016 Australian Drone Nationals on the Gold Coast next weekend. “I like the freedom to just fly around and fly where you see” he said. FPV drone pilots are able to execute extremely fast and agile manoeuvres through a pair of goggles that transmit a live image from the drone’s onboard camera. Mr Towne said the club, which has been going for more than 35 years, caters for all types of models

including electric and nitro-powered aircraft, helicopters, drones, gliders and even turbine jets. “There are qualified instructors in all disciplines and we’re keen to have junior members,” he said. The club is also in the process of building an off-road, dirt track for remote control trucks and buggies. For more information, head to the “Mascot NQ” Facebook page, contact Murray Towne (Mareeba) on 0429 878 010 or Pete Fuller (Atherton) on 0411 791 716. The club holds a meeting every Sunday from 7am at their flying field at the end of Adil Rd.

Fair go for cane farmers It is little wonder that the gulf of alienation between rural and regional Australia and the city elites continues to grow. Last week, the Productivity Commission released a draft report on regulation in agriculture and with it, its assessment of the Queensland sugar industry. The Commission asserts from its offices in Melbourne and Canberra that the 2015 amendments to sugar industry legislation in Queensland should be scrapped, claiming they have destroyed investment confidence in the industry. Interestingly enough, not a single mention was made about the wants and needs of 4,500 cane farming families. This recommendation in the draft report is so far removed from reality that it beggars belief. As Chairman of Canegrowers Queensland, no one from the Productivity Commission spoke to me or any other grower representative groups as this report was compiled. No doubt the Commission spoke to a few mill owners and simply referred to the economic text book that deregulation is good for all. It is a pity. Had the Productivity Commission been doing its job investigating the Queensland sugar industry properly, it would have discovered some inconvenient truths. It would have discovered that the amendments are designed to encourage competition in sugar marketing services and destroy a monopoly situation the millers are seeking to protect. It would also have found that under deregulation the industry has contracted, that growers have lost market power to monopoly millers, that growers are not seeing financial benefit from value adding and that huge monopolies are now bullying growers into marketing arrangements that rob them of longheld marketing rights. Worst of all, the Productivity Commission asserts that little structural reform had taken place in the Queensland sugar industry. In that, it could not be further from the truth. The Australian sugar industry following numerous reforms from both State and Commonwealth governments is now the most market focussed in the world. One hundred percent of our production is tied to the world price.

Wildlife matters in FNQ The many articles about the land clearing laws seems to mostly focus on how to make maximum amount of money from the land. The fact that remnant vegetation is home to many native Australian species comes seldom into the equation. We still seem to take the old Terra Nullius approach when it comes to other species than us humans. Land is thus treated as if it is vacant not recognising its inhabitants(wildlife). Having the environment at heart, I was hoping the vegetation act, changed by the Newman government to enable land clearing again, will be reinstated to its previous state as soon as possible. I am saddened by the amount and type of land clearing that has occurred even on a local level under the new laws. I’ve seen remnant vegetation cleared, that was packed with under the EPBC act listed endangered trees and that was habitat of the endangered Northern Quoll just to produce land to make hay on. I am shocked by Australia’s inability to act on climate change, especially since Australia is one of the countries most affected by it. It is common knowledge that deforestation plays a big part in climate change. I do realise many farmers are doing it tough in Australia, having been involved in farming myself. But a lot of agricultural land has been destroyed because of bad land management practices and overstocking. Going to clear more remnant vegetation and move on to repeat the same mistakes seems very ill advised. Can we not aim to fix what we destroyed and leave the little remnant vegetation left to other species so they can have a fair go too? Nadine O’Brien, Koah

We are sick and tired of being told that we need to muscle up to global competition – it is a challenge we face and meet every day. Other global sugar industries have buckets of government support yet our Productivity Commission says we are not trying hard enough. To rub salt into the wounds, the Commission compared our average farm size as being one third of that in the United States. US farmers have government subsidies which are at times double the world price we receive – yet we are being compared to their scale of operations. Yet again the bureaucratic elites, with not a single cent of skin in the game, give us a lecture. Little wonder that none of us are listening. Paul Schembri Chairman, CANEGROWERS

Waiting game for bypass plan By Michael Serenc A MAREEBA farmer is no closer to knowing the fate of his farm after meeting with authorities to discuss a planned bypass through his property. Mango and cane farmer Tony Falvo, who owns a 57 ha property along Mareeba-Dimbulah Rd, is lobbying the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) to change the shape of a bypass through to the Mulligan Highway, which would cut his farm in two. Mr Falvo met with TMR’s Far North District Director of Program Delivery and Operations, Sandra Burke, last week in a desperate plea for common sense on the bypass plan. The long-time farmer has endorsed a proposal by Mareeba Mayor Tom Gilmore, which would put the bypass through an adjacent narrow corridor of land owned by State water provider Sunwater for the bypass instead. The corridor, about 20m wide, sits west be-

tween Mr Falvo’s property and the Mareeba rodeo grounds and provides a straighter path for the bypass. If built there, Mr Falvo could keep his land in one piece and said he would be willing to give up a small strip, in conjunction with the rodeo grounds and other neighbouring properties, to fully accommodate the road. “Basically, Ms Burke was uncommitted,” Mr Falvo said of meeting with her. “She took into consideration what my problem was. She had briefly read the file and realised the issue had been going for some time.” Mr Falvo said he had to tell Ms Burke that TMR had already gazetted about 4.5km of land required for the bypass, a fact she had been unaware of. “She said it’s still going to be a long process in examining the bypass…and the first step would be to apply for funding from the government to carry out an investigation of it,” Mr Falvo re-

called. The Express understands an investigation of the bypass and its possible realignment, if funded by the State Government, could take more than to 12 months. “Ms Burke felt that the bypass may not go where the mayor wants to put it because of certain adjoining property issues with housing,” Mr Falvo said. “I thought that was incorrect because there’s sufficient land to cater for that road where the mayor is proposing and we would be meeting land requirements equally between neighbours to put it in the correct position.” Mr Falvo said decades of continued uncertainty over where exactly the bypass would be put left his farm hamstrung. “Our family has been in the balance with that farm, not being able to put any new infrastructure in, or initiate any new farming practices or crop due to the fact that this thing’s been looming where we can’t make a decision,” he said.

“The gazetted land in place at the moment means we can’t do anything. You can’t plant trees because TMR could come at any point and resume that land.” “That farm is slowly deteriorating to a stage where it becomes primitive.” A second bypass, about 4km long, is planned from Mareeba-Dimbulah Rd through to the Kennedy Highway, giving heavy vehicles a muchneeded alternative road to Mareeba’s congested town centre along Byrnes St. But no timeframes have been set by TMR to construct either bypass at this stage. A TMR spokesman said the department has begun a planning study for the proposed bypass through Mr Falvo’s farm, with a business case expected to be complete by late next year. “We will continue to work closely with Mareeba Shire Council and other key stakeholders to refine the route as part of the planning process,” he said.

The LAND Rate relief for farmers in need

NEEDED: Drought Recovery Concessional Loans scheme is offering interest rates at record lows.

PRIMARY producers wanting to put their drought recovery plans into action can now access concessional loans of up to $1 million, with interest rates at a record low 2.66 per cent. Queensland Rural Adjustment Authority (QRAA) CEO Cameron MacMillan said the finance available under the Drought Recovery Concessional Loans scheme focused on assisting farm businesses restock or plant when the season breaks. “The unique feature of the recovery loans is the pre-approval process – so that funds are there when the seasonal conditions allow restocking or planting to take place,” Mr MacMillan said. Since the scheme opened in October 2015, QRAA has approved over $12 million in concessional loans, providing Queensland farm businesses affected by drought to commence their recovery. In addition to concessional interest rates, the concessional loans feature repayment terms of up to 10 years with interest only repayments for the first five years. Mr MacMillan urged farmers who are affected by drought to take advantage of the low interest rates and contact QRAA to start the application process. “QRAA has client liaison officers across Queensland who are available to meet on-farm to discuss loan criteria, terms and conditions and assist with the application process – give them a call today,” he said. For more information, head to www.qraa.qld.gov.au or call 1800 623 946.

Banana scholarship up for grabs SCIENCE students at the University of Queensland are being urged to apply for an innovative scholarship backed by the banana industry. The Australian Banana Growers’ Council (ABGC) has opened applications for $5000 scholarships, in a bid to entice more young minds to the banana industry. The Mort Johnston Professional Development Scholarship will provide financial assistance to students in their third year of study of agricultural or related science degree programs at UQ. The foundation was established in 2007 in

honour of pioneering Tully banana grower, the late Mort Johnston. In previous years, the scholarship has funded innovative projects designed to advance the banana industry, including research into banana diseases, improved farming practices and environmental management. But this year, the ABGC and the Johnston family have reworked the foundation to focus on supporting individual students who have a desire to work in the banana industry. Mr Johnston’s son Paul was supportive of the

new direction. “It’s a great way to get students involved, to give them a chance to experience the banana industry,” he said. On top of $5000 in financial assistance, successful applicants will be offered vacation employment at one or more banana enterprises. The purpose of the bursary is to provide high achieving students the opportunity to consider a career in the ever evolving and dynamic banana industry. Successful applicants will be assisted by the

Mr Johnston said he hoped such opportunities would draw more young people into the industry. “The scientists we have today are not going to be there forever. ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS: THE MOVIE, staring Joanna Lumley and Jennifer Saunders is based on the hit TV series, and is fun-filled cinema entertainment at its best. THE LEGEND OF TARZAN – a modern take on the dramatic adventures of Tarzan, with Australian star Margot Robbie doing a spectacular job as Jane. With the added benefit of the

ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS: THE MOVIE

Edina (Jennifer Saunders) and Patsy (Joanna Lumley) are still oozing glitz and glamor, living the high life they are accustomed to; shopping, drinking and clubbing their way around London's trendiest hot-spots and fashion shows. Blamed for a major incident at an uber fashionable launch party, they become the targets of a media storm and are relentlessly pursued by the paparazzi. Fleeing penniless to the glamorous playground of the super-rich, the French Riviera, they hatch a plan to make their escape permanent and live the high life forever more. Review by Louise Keller: Happy to report that Eddy and Patsy have still got it, and the film is 'bloody good fun', the term used to describe the reason why the latter has stayed latched to Edina all these years. Nearly 25 years after Ab Fab, the TV series became a worldwide hit, the amazing thing is that pretty much nothing has changed for its hedonistic central characters, whose lives are a neverending self-indulgent party filled with Bollinger, over-the-top clothes and an even

more outrageous lifestyle. Jennifer Saunders' script flows effortlessly, along with the one-liners and incongruous, colourful situations. Sit back, take a break from your everyday life and enjoy the sparkling ride: it's a rollercoaster of excess, punctuated by the ridiculous and in the company of celebrity faces. It's a bit like being in a time warp, as we revisit the self-obsessed world of ditzy publicist Edina Monsoon (Saunders) and her booze-loving bestie Patsy, who keeps it all together with jabs of Botox, swigs of Channel 5 and smears of red lipstick. Eddy's daughter Saffy (Julia Sawalha) is still ultra conservative and disapproving. Granddaughter Lola (Indeyarna Donaldson-Holness) is a new target for corruption. There is genuine affection for the characters and Eddy is the epitome of the tragic protagonist whose aim in life is to avoid being fat or old, which is clearly unlikely, as she complains that her side profile is seemingly larger than the front. Distinctive black Net A Porter boxes are returned and the cellar (once filled with Bolly) is tragically bare; her hopes for cash to subsidise her lifestyle are dashed when her publisher at 'Random Penguin' declines her manuscript, pointedly saying her life may be worth living, but is not worth reading. The opening sequence at

London Fashion Week, featuring Jerry Hall, Lulu, Stella McCarthy and other fashion glitterati is a hoot, culminating in Kate Moss' untimely plunge into the chilly Thames, when an over zealous Eddy tries to snare her as a PR client. What happens next is beautifully realised as the girls are holed up in Eddy's West London digs, while the paparazzi hovers outside. Then it's time for a hilarious escape to the glamorous South of France for serious golddigging. The adventures begin in Cannes, continue in Antibes at the fabulous Hotel du Cap and ending in the rustic narrow streets of Villefranche, where the colours of the houses blend with the fashions. Highlights include Saffy's rendition of At Seventeen in a colourful transvestite bar, Barry Humphries as Patsy's lecherous 'old scrotum', Rebel Wilson as a DNB airhostess ('Do Nothing Bitch') and Jane Horrock's dim blonde assistant Bubbles, who dresses like Ronald McDonald's side-kick. There is also Joan Collins, Kathy Lette and Jon Hamm, about whom Patsy has some intimate revelations. Mandie Fletcher, who directed some of the later TV series does a fine job here, allowing Eddy's wish to 'live the dream' to blossom as reality morphs into fantasy and back again. The music is especially good. Uplifting in every way, the film is a tonic: every bit as good as a glass of bubbly, or close.

entertainment Joe Avati rolls into town

Joe Avati regularly sells out theatres in Australia with his ‘Joe Avati Live’ tours, and this year he returns with a brand new show to celebrate 20 years on international stages. Joe is one of Australia’s top comedy exports and with his massive cult following, he criss-crosses the globe performing his unique brand of comedy (performing in both English and Italian) on both sides of the Atlantic where he sells out in the United Kingdom, the USA and Canada.

He holds the record for the fastest selling comedy show ever in Canada, where he is one of the biggest names in comedy. The Toronto Sun labelled him “Pure comic genius” not only for his routines and comedic output (five live albums and five live DVD’s) but also for his ability to market himself through the internet. The Globe and Mail went on to say that Joe Avati is “one of the planet's hottest comics". His shows are completely clean, without one swear word throughout

and are therefore happily attended by teenagers, their parents and even their grandparents. It’s a show for the whole family and suitable for children aged. Be sure to catch Joe’s new show at the Mareeba International Club at Vaughan Street, on Saturday September 3. Tickets are only $48.50 per person, but hurry as they are limited and are selling fast. Hockey aces go national TWO Tablelands hockey hotshots have whacked their way into the national spotlight. 13-year-old Abby Toshach and Tolga man Peter Sceresini have earned spots in the Queensland Under 13 girls team and 2016/17 Australian Country Senior Men’s squad respectively. Atherton youngster Toshach, who idolises Hockeyroo Anna Flanagan, said she was stoked to be representing her state once again after making the Under 12 team last year. “I’m very honoured and excited,” she said. “My teammates think I’ve done very well and deserve what I’ve achieved.” Toshach should also give the squad options in both attack and defence, excelling as a striker for her local side but also able to play fullback. “It will definitely be a good experience,” she said. “It’s such a higher level to play at.” The Queensland team will go up against their state and territory counterparts at the Australian Championships in Perth, starting in late September.

“I reckon I’ll go pretty well,” Toshach said. “I scored the winning goal in my last game at the nationals last year, so that’ll boost my confidence a lot heading into this one.” Adding to the challenge will be Perth’s artificial turf field. “Playing on a turf is a much quicker game, so you’ve got to change your speed and skills with the ball,” Toshach said. “It will definitely be a change but I’ve been playing on turf once a week in Cairns so I should be getting used to it now.” Toshach said she dreamt of one day being able to represent her country as a Hockeyroo. “I would love to achieve such a high level,” she said. Meanwhile, Sceresini, who made his squad after being selected at last month’s Australian Country Championships in Darwin, will later this year go on an international tour of several Asia-Pacific nations.

Mareeba Amateur Boxing Club has punched about their weight in a successful tournament last month. Held the Mareeba Turf Club with a 13 bout card, fighters travelled as far as Rockhampton, Mackay, Townsville and Palm Island to make the night a great success. The Yungaburra Boxing Gym had four fighters weigh in, with three getting a bout. All of their club’s boxers were first timers and acquitted themselves well in the ring. The first Yungaburra boxer to fight was Ryan Cupitt up against Mareeba’s Tosh Pichler. Both boxers put on a strong display of skills, but Pichler prevailed after the referee called a stop to the match in the second round in his favour. Nathan Brkic Broza Strickland from Mareeba Amateur Boxing Club. Brkic's skill outclassed Strickland in each round, his punishing combinations had the referee stop the contest in Round 3 in favour of Brkic. Michael Perks and Babinda’s Jonah Tuhoro put in a spirited display, both boxers coming out in round 1 jabbing, moving and feeling each other out. In round 2, Perks took control of the fight with lightning fast double left jabs and punishing right hands to the head and body. Perks had Tuhoro in trouble near the end of the round, with Tuhoro spitting out his mouthguard to get a break. In round 3, with instructions from his corner, Perks when to attack Tuhoro's body. A stiff jab, solid right and dynamite body shots won Perks the fight by unanimous decision.

Roosters in semis mix and looking for support The Mossman Sharks remain quietly in fifth spot on the Cairns District Rugby League ladder after defeating the Atherton Roosters 34-28 in Friday nights premiership match, played at the Mossman Showgrounds. Mossman’s win has moved them one point behind the Roosters who have dropped to fourth spot, two points behind third placed Brothers. The Roosters were under the pump early as the Sharks opened full of energy to lead 22-0, after only 15 minutes of play. Naya Freeman’s try in the 20th minute got the Roosters scoring started, but the Sharks took a comfortable 2812 lead into halftime. An improved second half wasn’t enough to save the Roosters who remain in the top five mix, but face a couple of busy weeks ahead in the finals countdown. With three rounds remaining, Innisfail head the points table on 36 followed by Ivanhoes 30, Brothers 27, Atherton 25, Mossman 24, Tully 22, Edmonton 18, Kangaroos 12, Suburbs 11, Mareeba 10 and Yarrabah 9.

The Mareeba Bulls chances of defending their premiership title have taken a further blow with a disappointing 4-1 loss away to the Leichhardt Lions on Saturday night, in Cairns. Many expected the Bulls to come out firing after last weekend’s 1-0 loss to the Stratford Dolphins, but it was the opposite as the Mareeba side looked in second gear as the Lions ran over the top of them, taking the lead early on with a scrappy goal tapping in unmarked at the back post. The second goal came on the 25th mark, when defender Nicolas Tallarico was adjudged to have hand balled the ball in the penalty area and the home side converted to take a 2-0 lead midway through the first half. The Bulls then finally woke from the slumber and clicked into gear dominating the remaining 20 minutes of the first half. They had a clear penalty shot of their own waved away in the 30th minute when striker Steven Cater brought down. The linesman called the penalty, but the centre ref waved play on to the dismay of the Bulls supporters. The Mareeba side continued to press on and were unlucky not to get something back before the break. Coach Alex Srhoj pretty much summed it up at half time and just urged his side to show they are not finished. The Bulls did come out in the second period looking better, but the Lions took advantage of some lacklustre defending with a Lions attacker leaving several Mareeba defenders in his wake before setting up his follow attacker at the back post to take a 3-0 lead. At that point, the match took a turn, with the centre ref pulling up lame, and had to be replaced ten minutes into the second half, with the game held up for several minutes whilst the new ref was prepared. The twist seemed to give the Bulls time to regroup and the next 20 minutes witnessed the Mareeba side totally outplay the lions and were given the perfect chance to get back into the game with a Lions handball giving Dennis Allen the chance to convert and bring the score to

The Roosters will host Cairns Brothers this Friday night, August 12, in three grades from 5.30pm at Roosters Stadium Atherton, with free admission for all attending. In the main game, the fourth placed Roosters face a tough contest against the third placed Brothers, but plenty of home town support is expected for the red, white and blue. The under 18 clash also draws plenty of interest as the fourth placed Roosters go up against ladder leaders Cairns Brothers. Brothers lead the points table on 34 followed by Innisfail 32, Edmonton 27, Atherton 26, Kangaroos 24, Ivanhoes 22, Tully 19, Yarrabah 18, Mareeba 10 and Suburbs 10. The Mareeba Gladiators recorded another loss on Friday night, going down 54-10 to Ivanhoes. They will now host Yarrabah this Saturday, with the main game at 6pm, at Davies Park.

3-1. The Bulls continued to dominate, pining the home side into their defensive third and had several chances to bring the game closer, with a couple of chances being cleared of the line and two or three goal mouth scrambles, that somehow did not find the back of the net. With the Bulls pressing, the home side caught them on the break and scored the fourth goal to kill off the game. The loss now places the Bulls in a precarious position with only four games remaining and two against third place Southside Comets to come. The Mareeba boys are going to have to show every bit of the their championship winning qualities to give themselves a shot at the grand final. Bulls coach Alex Srhoj expressed how disappointed the players were after the game, but more frustrated as it was their own doing that allowed the Lions the opportunity to roar. “Our start killed us, it’s hard when we are chasing the game, we need to start better, only at 2-0 did we wake up,” said Srhoj. “Yes we were unlucky not to have scored a couple more, but we paid the price – Leichhardt took their chances, and we didn’t, simple as that. “Now every game has more pressure, we need to lift, we now need to show what we are made of. “We have turned things around before, and we can do it again.” The Bulls reserve team showed the spirit the premiers need, with a remarkable 2-1 win – their first of the season over the Lions to give their finals hopes a strong push. An 85th minute winner from youth player Zane Singleton gave the Bulls the massive three points they needed, while veteran Ronnie Leporati was the difference for the side pulling off a string of strong saves. Mareeba’s 2nd division mens side continued their push for the premiership with a epic 4-3 win over the Lions, with the win keeping the Bulls on top of the 2nd division standings.

Darcy Taylor and his young under 18 team mates are in the 2016 finals mix and need your support this Friday night.
