Charity ride hits home NO amount of muscle cramps, sunburn or dehydration was going to stop cyclist Dave Edwards from reaching the finish line. The former Rangeview man finally arrived back home on the Tablelands last Saturday afternoon after a marathon nine-day, 2000km bike ride to raise money for mental health charity beyondblue. After tragically losing his mother in 2014, Mr Edwards is urging those suffering from their own mental demons to speak up and seek help. FULL STORY PAGE 27

D-Day for land vote By Michael Serenc

MAREEBA deputy mayor Alan Pedersen has come out in support of selling a parcel of land crucial to getting a proposed $21 million shopping centre built in the town. The Express can reveal Cr Pedersen will vote

to approve the sale of the 1128m2 block to developer Reedlodge Pty Ltd after council resolved at last week’s meeting to hold a vote on the land sale at their January 25 meeting. It follows nearly six months of inaction since the shopping centre was first proposed by Reedlodge, with council having trusteeship over the

block of state-owned land in question. The date allows for all councillors to be present for the vote, with Mayor Tom Gilmore on medical leave at last week’s meeting and Cr Kevin Davies to be on holidays when council’s final meeting of the year is held on December 21. The January vote will also give councillors

extra time to seek more information about the land sale, with the majority still reluctant to talk publicly about their position on the issue. Reedlodge needs council’s approval to sell the triangular block of land, which was original reserved for aged housing. CONTINUED Page 3

Public art needs your support MAREEBA Shire residents keen to brighten their towns up with public artworks are being urged to have their say. Warril Creative co-owner Eve Soemardi is encouraging locals to speak up on whether large-scale public art would work in the shire after the stunning success of the Mareeba Centre mural. “The more data we can collect, the stronger the case for public art in general,” she said. “It should also give us an indication as to what type of public art would be the most popular.” The mural, which was officially opened last Friday, was painted by local artist Tom Cosic and pays tribute to Mareeba’s rich and diverse history. Ms Soemardi said the survey would also ask whether such artwork could help promote tourism and culture in the region. “Having facilitated the mural in Mareeba Centre, the response was completely overwhelming from the public,” she said.

“It took the artists more than twice the time to complete because the public was engaging with them constantly…There’s about three times more content in that mural because of the community’s feedback. “Over that 12 months that we painted and finalised the mural we realised there was a huge appetite for art.” Mareeba Shire councillor Lenore Wyatt believed there was a desire for large-scale public artworks in the shire, but wanted community feedback first. “When I saw the mural at Mareeba Centre, it was inspiring,” she said. “I would love to see this type of thing throughout our shire.” Cr Wyatt said artwork in alleyways or along walking trails could be some options to consider if there was a strong enough public push for it. To fill out the survey, head to www. tomcosicart.com.au/tom-cosic-mareeba-centre-historical-murals Non-locals can also fill out a separate survey at the same website.

Mareeba Shire councillor Lenore Wyatt and Warril Creative co-owner Eve Soemardi want public feedback on producing large-scale artwork in the shire.

Mareeba tourism volunteers skill up TOURISM volunteers in the Mareeba Shire are set to be even more helpful to visitors keen to explore the region. 13 volunteers from the Mareeba Heritage Centre and Visitor Information Centre (VIC) and Kuranda VIC completed a Certificate III in Tourism last Wednesday after 10 weeks learning enhanced customer service skills and exploring everything the Tablelands have to offer tourists. Undertaking classes at Mareeba

Leagues Club, the group also attended four famils to visit tourist operations across the shire. The certificate training was provided free of charge by Career Training Institute of Australia Regional Queensland owner Mark Essenhigh . “Visitor Information Centres can’t stay open without volunteers, that’s the key,” he said. “People can get so much information from the internet but they still come

to places like this to get on the ground knowledge, so that makes these guys really important.” Mr Essenhigh said the group visited “at least 30” small tourism operators in the Kuranda and Mareeba area during the famils, businesses which often lacked the exposure of their bigger rivals. “The volunteers have been gobsmacked by what’s out there and they all now have these operators front of mind

leading into Christmas,” he said. “Some of these operators have already had referrals.” Mareeba VIC volunteer John Williams praised the course, which also gave volunteers tips on how to better present the region to visitors with wellprepared itineraries. “We’ve improved our knowledge of the area to be able to pass on to tourists when they come in,” he said. “It’s the next level up.”

Pederson supports shopping centre FROM Page 1 “The reason there are no units there is because of the costs involved in building access for it,” Cr Pedersen said. “I think we’ve got more suitable options.” While the Department of Mines and Natural Resources has the final say on selling the land, it will be influenced by council’s view on the proposed purchase. The block would add to Reedlodge’s existing 12,403m2 of land situated across from Mareeba Plaza along Byrnes St, allowing the company to proceed with a development application. Cr Pedersen was relieved the decision would finally be brought to a head. “I want to make a decision on this as soon as possible,” he said. “The developer needs certainty one way or the other. We can’t keep dragging this on. That’s why I want this dealt with.” Cr Pedersen said he had spoken with Cr

Gilmore prior to last week’s meeting and the mayor had agreed to hold the land vote in January. Reedlodge solicitor Pietro Girgenti welcomed council’s decision as a step forward. “It’s good to know there is a date to look forward to so we can hear once and for all the council’s position and remove all the ambiguity away from the project,” he said. Reedlodge has had an at-times rocky relationship with council, resulting in four separate Right To Information requests regarding correspondence between Reedlodge and four different State Government departments over the land purchase dating back to December last year. But Mr Girgenti said he was confident councillors “would make the right decision” when it came to the vote. “There’s no doubt the disposal of this disused and awkward parcel of land to allow such a game-changing development to take place is in the best interests of the shire,” he said.

“The business community in Mareeba is waiting with baited breath. It’s such a considerable development for the main street and retail opportunities in town.” Mr Girgenti said Reedlodge “stood ready, willing and able” to provide whatever further information council needed before voting on the land sale. “Our books are open as far as we’re concerned,” he said. “We do still remain confused about what possible information might be lurking in State Government folders which would in any way affect council’s position as to whether or not this land’s needed.” If eventually approved, construction of the shopping centre would take between 12 and 18 months, generating between 200 and 220 direct and indirect jobs. Once built, the 7000m2 centre, which will include a major supermarket, is expected to sustain between 200 and 250 direct and indirect jobs.

Disaster drills test response by LDMG

A TERRIFYING category four cyclone was the focus of a major disaster scenario carried out on the Tablelands last week. Exercise Cyclone Nora brought together Tablelands Regional Council and the Local Disaster Management Group (LDMG) as they tested their response to the simulated disaster. Council officers, police, firefighters, paramedics and Queensland Health staff participated in the exercise, which involved the cyclone crossing the coastline just south of Cairns. “The Local Disaster Coordination Centre has been activated and staff have had

the opportunity to practice their roles prior to the upcoming cyclone season,’ said Tablelands mayor and LDMG chair Joe Paronella. “Staff and agencies involved received requests for assistance, dealt with a number of issues relating to setting up evacuation centres, prepared for rising water levels, reinstated critical infrastructure and distributed information to the community in a timely manner. “The Tablelands LDMG is getting ready and it’s important that residents get ready too.” Cr Paronella said there was plenty of information on council’s website to help residents prepare for a natural disaster, such as creating an effective plan and emergency kit checklist. “Residents can also register for the Early Warning Network to receive free SMS, email and voice alerts of weather events affecting the region,” he said. “With the wet season approaching, it is important to remember if it’s flooded forget. Please keep away from drains and ensure that you and your family are prepared for if a severe weather event.” Head to www.trc.qld. g o v. a u / d i s a s t e r - m a n agement, search “TRC Disaster Management” on Facebook or follow “CouncilTRC” on Twitter.

“All the stores are doing something a little bit different as part of the overall shopping experience,” she said. “Quite a few people are getting excited about the event.” Shoppers will be treated to some lively street music and the chance to win a hamper with every purchase at participating stores. Ms Flood said depending on the success of the night, she was hopeful the event would turn into an annual fixture. “We’d also like to extend it up the street as well as the years go by,” she said. Gang terrorises Atherton A GANG of teen vandals are believed to be responsible for a spate of heartless attacks on community buildings in Atherton earlier this month. Police caught and charged a group of four teenagers aged between 11 and 14, who allegedly broke in and vandalised buildings used or owned by Atherton Scouts, Girl Guides, Roosters Rugby League Club, Tableland Community Link (TCL), Lions, the tennis club, Atherton State School and two childcare centres on the night of November 12. Each member of the group was dealt with under the provisions of the Youth Justice Act. TCL service manager Carrie de Brueys said the organisation and its clients were devastated by the damage done to their activity centre, which involved a smashed window, lewd graffiti on walls and cupboards, damaged equipment and a stolen Xbox which has since been recovered. “I was horrified. My first thought was for my clients,” she said. “These are some of the most vulnerable people in our community and they don’t understand why someone would break in to their room and do this damage.” The room, an old Atherton State School building, is leased off Tablelands Regional Council and is used by as many as 40 TCL cli-

ents. Much of the room’s equipment was bough with money raised by TCL clients, making the vandalism even harder to swallow. Mrs de Brueys was disappointed to hear one of the teens had been let off with only a caution, saying it made a mockery of the police’s efforts to bring the gang to justice with such a soft punishment handed down by the court. “It comes back down to the community. The parents need to know where their kids are and the community needs to report anything suspicious,” she said. “I’m sure they thought they weren’t hurting anybody and it was fun, but the reality is vandalism and graffiti hurts everyone in the community. “It has a knock-on effect.” Atherton Police Acting Officer In Charge Acting Senior-Sergeant Matthew Duncan slammed the gang’s actions as “disgusting”. “They’re not being properly supervised. They’re allowed to go out at all hours and basically target community groups,” he said. “From our perspective, it’s terrible behaviour on their part.” Sen-Sgt Duncan said police were

patrolling and conducting street checks as often as they could, but vandal attacks were hard to predict. TCL has so far raised $14,000 for a new $200,000 activity centre, which will be built behind their existing administration building on Grove St. The organisation will hold a Family Fair on December 3 to help raise money for the centre. To donate or book a stall at the fair, visit www.tclink.org.au/donate/ or call 4091 7066.

Arsenic found in bore water MAREEBA Shire Council has reminded residents relying on bore water to have it properly filtered after traces of arsenic were found at properties in Koah. Members of Kuranda Region Planning Group (KRPG) claimed a recent test of bore water used by properties at two ruralresidential sub-divisions in Koah found “widespread” traces of arsenic, a natural but toxic chemical that can cause cancer and skin lesions when taken in high dosages. Council Chief Executive Officer Peter Franks said under existing regulations, a developer had to prove there was a potable (drinkable) water supply at the time of their application to build but it was impossible to predict what contaminants would eventually enter the supply after several years. “It is important to note that the quality of water taken from such sources does not stay constant and will vary from season to season,” he said. But KRPG claims that a recent bore water test report for a block of land currently for sale in Koah was not thorough, having not tested for heavy metals, E-coli,

www.theexpressnewspaper.com.au

pesticides or herbicides. Mr Franks said it was the responsibility of residents relying on bore water to have it properly filtered and regularly tested for contamination. “Private water sources do not have the same level of quality control as the water supply provided to properties which are connected to council’s reticulated water supply network,” he said. “For this reason, property owners who source their water supply from water bores and/or waterways should monitor and test the water quality regularly.” Mr Franks said council-owned bores in Chillagoe contained arsenic, which was removed with a specialised filtration system to improve water quality for people connected to council’s water supply scheme. “Council’s reticulated water supply schemes operate on a purely users pays system with no cross subsidisation by the general ratepayers,” he said. “Council is not in a position to use general ratepayers funds to subsidise individual property owners water treatment systems.”

Seniors splash out MAREEBA State High’s seniors have said sayonara to school in style after a week of fun farewell activities sure to give them lasting memories. The Year 12s were kept busy right up until their formal last Friday night, participating in two driver safety courses, a game show, poolside barbeque and the traditional ringing of the bell and drive by. School guidance officer Hazel Bensted said the activity program was designed to keep seniors engaged with the school instead of shunning them in their final week. “It’s celebrating their success and achieve-

ments,” she said. “They’re a lovely group of students and it reflects in how they’ve conducted themselves this year. They’ve been just great. “It’s been a real privilege to be around them.” Cooling off at Mareeba Swimming Pool last Thursday, senior student Brendan Vedelago said he had mixed emotions about graduating. “It’ll definitely be sad, mainly because you’re so used to seeing your mates every day and having lunch with them,” he said. “I’d say to the next group of seniors – study hard but have a bit of a social life too…It’s

good to let your hair down for a bit.” Mr Vedelago said he hoped to start an electrical apprenticeship next year. The 18-year-old also praised English teacher and student council mentor Tim Ralph for helping him get through his final year. “He’s a been a big inspiration,” Mr Vedelago said. “At the beginning of Grade 12, I really hated school. I didn’t want to come back, I’d had enough and he helped me pull my head in and pointed me in the right direction.”

Mareeba Chamber of Commerce president Joe Moro believes 2016 was a positive for the local economy.

2016 good for growth “Based on weather events, the agricultural sector should be in for an interesting period. Hopefully, we’ll get some rain and they’ll continue to be in a strong position.” Mr Moro said while a significant lack of rain resulting in falling water levels at Tinaroo Dam was concerning for farmers, he hoped a solid wet season would allay those fears. Still in the balance remains a proposed $21 million shopping centre for Mareeba, with council to vote in January on selling a parcel of land to developer Reedlodge Pty Ltd that is needed for the project to press ahead. “It’s good that we’ve finalised that process for the developer, as much as the council as well, so we know where we’re going,” Mr Moro said. “There are pros and cons, but generally, a lot of people are in support of that proposal. “It’ll be interesting to see where council lands on that issue.”

RIDING FOR A GOOD CAUSE: The Tablelands Toy Run is celebrating its 20th year.

THE roar of dozens of motorbikes will be heard across the Tablelands this Saturday, as the annual Tablelands Toy Run makes its return. Now in its 20th year, the charity event is once again putting the call out to generous locals to donate new toys to families in need this Christmas. Run by the Highland Restorer’s Club on behalf of the Salvation Army’s Red Shield Appeal, club member and Toy Run co-ordinator Ray Scarlett said he was expecting more than 200 bikers from across Cairns and the Tablelands to once again join forces for a good cause. “It’s a bit of an institution up here on the Tablelands,” he said. “It’s a fantastic time for people to give back to the community so the atmosphere is very positive. “The day’s all about the kids and the Salvation Army but it’s also about the participants as well.” Bikers participating will be able to enter lucky draws and prizes for oldest male rider, oldest female rider, furthest travelled, most complete family of riders and much more. The Toy Run will stop by several Tablelands

towns including Kairi, Yungaburra Markets and the Malanda Showgrounds to collect donations and toys. The group will be escorted by police and firefighters and led by the jolly red man himself, Santa. The Toy Run will then finish up at Tolga Oval by about 11am where organisers will officially hand over their donations to the Salvation Army. Local residents are also welcome to come along and donate, with toys for all age groups encouraged. “Normally we get one or two utes full of toys but we’d like to get three utes full this year,” Mr Scarlett said. “We normally get about $3000 in donations and we’d like to break that too.” Bikers wanting to join in the Toy Run must meet at the Tinaroo Rural Fire Brigade depot along Tinaroo Falls Dam Rd between 7am and 9am for breakfast and a briefing. All bikers are to bring a wrapped new toy to donate. For more information, contact Ray Scarlett on 0437 736 755.

A PROMISING and productive year for the local economy has Mareeba Chamber of Commerce president Joe Moro excited for the future. With work finally starting on the $380 million Mt Emerald Wind farm next month, the completion of multimillion facilities by Lindsay Rural and Blenners Transport and continuation of the $18 million Mareeba airport upgrade, the town seems to be powering ahead. “From an economic point of view, there’s been a fair bit of activity,” Mr Moro said. “And it’s fair to say the agricultural sector has performed very strongly over the last 12 months and is the backbone of the community and businesses in town.” Work is also underway on Mareeba Shire Council’s $16 million Wastewater Treatment Plant upgrade, while MSF Sugar will start work on their $75 million power station next May. “Some of those developments will cross over into the next year, especially the wind farm,” Mr Moro said.

WHEN Wayne Donnelly was battling depression in 2005 he turned to hypnosis for help. His positive experience in overcoming the depression and making changes in his life led to a fascination with hypnosis. A few years down the track, the former accountant and financial planner now has a successful career as a stage hypnotist and couldn’t be happier. “I have to laugh when people say they are scared of hypnosis because they’re worried that they will lose control of their mind” Donnelly said. “Nothing could be further from the truth. Hypnosis is not voodoo, magic or mind control – it is a natural state that we all experience every day”. Donnelly will bring his comedy hypnosis show to Mareeba RSL this Friday, November 25. With the emphasis on fun, audiences can expect to become involved in the show, but not to be embarrassed. “This is not the type of show where you will end up clucking like a chicken or barking like a dog” Donnelly said. “that’s a cliché from the old days, although some audience members ask for it still”. What you will see is people having a lot of fun on stage for the comedic entertainment of the audience. This is a show where you and your friends can become the stars of the show in a safe, tasteful and unforgettable way that will have you laughing and talking about the experience long after the show. You have the opportunity to either see the show or be the show. The Gold Coast resident and father of three said his aim was to provide an entertaining and encouraging look at how we can harness the power of the mind for good – as well as for comedy. Donnelly is a master hypnotist, NLP Master Practitioner and a member of The Australian Hypnosis Alliance. You can see Wayne at the Mareeba RSL on Friday night. Doors open at 7pm for 8pm show with tickets $25 each or 10 tickets for $200. Call the RSL today to book on 4092 1396.

War story comes to the big screen New on the Rising Sun screen in Mareeba this week is the excellent true story drama HACKSAW RIDGE – which has been critically acclaimed around the world and here in Australia. Directed by Mel Gibson, it is the story of Desmond Doss, the most highly decorated American soldier in WWII, who never actually fired a single bullet. Also continuing for a second great week is the sensational J.K.Rowling's FANTASTIC BEASTS AND WHERE TO FIND THEM.

HACKSAW RIDGE

WWII American Army Medic Desmond T. Doss (Andrew Garfield), who served during the Battle of Okinawa, refuses to kill people and becomes the first Conscientious Objector in American history to be awarded the Medal of Honor. It is the true story of Desmond Doss (Andrew Garfield), a WWII Army Medic who refuses to carry a gun because killing is against his beliefs; he wants to save lives, not take them. Strongly influenced

by his traumatic childhood in Virginia with his drunk, self-loathing, physically abusive father (Hugo Weaving) and devout Seventh Day Adventist mother (Rachel Griffith, excellent), it is impressed upon him as a youngster, that killing is the most ‘grievous sin in the world’. These strong flashback sequences are key in providing the film’s foundations; Weaving is especially good in what are some of the most emotionally satisfying scenes.

P plate drivers defy peer passenger rules WITH schoolies celebrations in full swing, the State’s peak motoring body has put P plate drivers on notice, warning them not to defy peer passenger rules when behind the wheel. The latest figures released to RACQ by the Department of Transport and Main Roads revealed more than 240 P1 licence holders were caught breaking passenger restrictions during the first half of this year. RACQ’s Lauren Ritchie said P1 licence holders under 25 years of age were unable to drive with more than one peer passenger not in their immediate family between 11pm-5am. Ms Ritchie said the rules were not about making life difficult for young drivers. “Young and inexperienced drivers are high risk

road users and are particularly vulnerable to distractions when driving with their peers or at night,” Ms Ritchie said. “Peer passenger restrictions have been effective in reducing the number of crashes involving young drivers.” Ms Ritchie called on parents and carers to talk to learner and provisional licence holders about the dangers of driver distraction ahead of Schoolies Week. P1 licence holders under 25 years-old caught driving between 11pm and 5am while carrying more than one passenger under 21 who was not an immediate family member faced three demerit points and a $365 fine.

ROAD SERVICE CONTRACTOR Good Aussie Companies manufacturing great products seem to be harder to find now days. Royal Precision Lubricants are manufactured in Queensland to World Class Standards. Whether it’s your tractor, your truck or your 4x4, Royal Lubricants have an outstanding product for your needs. What do you want from your oil? Tangible, real world results. You want your oil to not only protect your valuable equipment, if it is a great oil it will actually improve the performance and running of your vehicle. Back in the 90’s oil became a lot more sophisticated. Modern oil is made up of base oils and additives. The base oil can either be a mineral, synthetic or combination such as semi synthetic. Quality base oils are essential. However the ‘magic’ lies in the additives and how they are mixed. Royal Lubricants use only the highest quality refined base oils available today. The additives used are

in a greater quantity than is required and of the finest quality you can find. ‘Double-hot blend’ is the technique used to blend the base oils and the additives. This involves heating the base oil and mixing the additive in a belly tank. The oil is then transferred to another mixer whilst being heated. All the additives are ‘blended’ properly. This gives you the best benefit and the most value for your money. None of the additives are left as ‘scum’ on the bottom of your drum. Or as some might say, putting your money down the drain. Allen’s 4x4 Accessories Mareeba are now the proud stockists of Royal Precision Lubricants. Supporting the community with great Aussie products, Allen’s now have ‘All the Good Oil’ too. Drop into Allen’s 4x4 Accessories at 10 Basalt St, Mareeba, or phone 4092 3965.

Schoolies statistics More than a third of Queensland teens admitted to being a passenger in a car with a driver they believed was over the legal limit, according to shocking new RACQ statistics. The State’s peak motoring body compiled the data as part of the Club’s award winning ‘Docudrama’ road safety education program. RACQ spokesperson Lauren Ritchie said the figures were worrying especially as thousands of Year 12 students prepared for Schoolies celebrations this weekend. “This is scary for parents of teenagers to hear young adults are placing themselves at risk like this,” Ms Ritchie said. “Worryingly, 77 percent of students also said they’ve been a passenger in a car when they felt their life was at risk.” Ms Ritchie said it was vital young adults knew how to get themselves out of trouble. “This should be a wake-up call to parents to ensure they’ve spoken with their kids about how to get home safely from Schoolies parties,” she

said. “Getting into the car with a drunk driver is never your only option to get home. If your gut is telling you something’s not right, say or do something because it’s simply not worth dying of embarrassment.” Gold Coast Police Senior Sergeant Ben Nielsen said it was vital teens planned ahead when at Schoolies. “If you do plan to drink when you go out, leave the car behind and catch a taxi or bus, get a lift with a sober friend, ask a volunteer for a ‘walk home’ or walk with a friend who hasn’t been drinking,” Snr Sgt Nielsen said. “Schoolies isn’t the time to experiment – don’t be pressured into consuming alcohol or drugs and remember a big night out could mean you’re over the limit the next day. “If you’re caught driving with drugs or alcohol in your system, you’ll face criminal prosecution, loss of licence and fines.”

Ripped off at the bowser

The State’s peak motoring body has again called on the Queensland Government to ban misleading petrol price boards to protect consumers from further exploitation. RACQ spokesperson Renee Smith said many retailers were trying to fool motorists into spending more by advertising discounted prices. “Motorists can be lured in by service stations advertising cheaper petrol prices when the reality is that’s not the real price. This deceptive behaviour should be illegal,” Ms Smith said. “The discounted price is only applicable when drivers spend more instore, or at an associated supermarket.” Ms Smith said RACQ had lobbied for transparency and fuel price board regulation for several years, and action from the State Government is long overdue. “The Government promised Queensland motorists back in March

this year it would investigate this issue further, but nothing’s changed,” she said. Ms Smith said regulating fuel price signage would bring Queensland into line with petrol price advertising standards in other States. “In New South Wales and South Australia the law prohibits a service station from displaying a discounted petrol price and provides instructions on pricing practices to ensure clear and consistent price advertising. Victoria is following suit and will enforce similar regulation from December,” she said. “If we even the playing field by having all retailers advertise the ‘true price’ then we give the power back to the motorist to choose where they want to shop. “We believe this will provide greater competition in the area, and ultimately drive down prices for Queensland motorists.”

Too many deaths

Buckle up the kids

The State’s peak motoring body has expressed concern at the disturbing number of motorists fined for failing to restrain their children while driving on Queensland roads. Figures released to RACQ by the Department of Transport and Main Roads found in

RACQ has expressed shock at Queensland’s road toll after a rise in pedestrian and motorcycle deaths this year. The State’s peak motoring body revealed 28 pedestrians had died during 2016, 11 more than the same time last year and 49 motorcyclists had died, a rise of four. RACQ’s Lauren Ritchie said to decrease the road toll all road users needed to take care. “Every year we want to see the road toll drop, whether that relates to those behind the wheel, on a bike or on foot,” Ms Ritchie said. “Pedestrians and motorcyclists are some of our most vulnerable road users. They don’t have the protection of a car that motorists do, and will come off second best in a crash with a vehicle. “We’re heading into the most dangerous time of year on our roads, so

the first half of this year more than 1000 drivers were caught not restraining a child under 16, with as many as 44 fines handed out for failing to buckle up a child under six months of age. Ms Ritchie said there was no excuse for not properly restraining a child in a car.

please take the road rules seriously. “Pedestrians are susceptible to distractions such as texting, talking on the phone and listening to music so it is vital they look before stepping onto the road.” RACQ LifeFlight Critical Care Doctor Matthew Mulkeen said the rescue helicopter service had been to four serious motorcycle crashes in the past week alone. “The extent of injuries to bike riders can be horrific and in many cases they’re severely injured when we arrive on the scene,” said Dr Mulkeen. “Sadly many patients pass away at the scene or in hospital soon after a motorcycle crash. If they do survive often the injuries are life threatening or life changing.” The current Queensland road toll is 199, down by four on the same time last year.

“Not taking the right steps to keep your child safely secured in the car simply beggars belief,” Ms Ritchie said. “Failing to properly restrain your child could be the difference between life and death if involved in a crash.” Ms Ritchie said RACQ de-

livered its Kids and Cars safety program for mothers groups, child carers and foster parents across Queensland offering free checks of child seats. RACQ members and nonmembers can have a child restraint fitted at a range of locations across Queensland.

The LAND NEW technology harnessing the power of natural steam could aid Tablelands farmers in the fight against navua sedge. Kuranda-based business Blue Hand Steam conducted a recent trial using their special equipment on navua sedge, with results showing the weed was killed off after three to four treatments. The technology uses water that is super-heated under pressure in a diesel fire boiler which is then pumped through a delivery hose. Blue Hand Steam executive director Kinan Lemberg said the benefits of steam weeding were demonstrated at Malanda’s recent Small Farms Field Day, attracting interest from several local farmers. "A few farmers will be hiring our steam unit over the next couple of months to help manage their extensive sedge problem,” he said. “One of the benefits with steam application is that it is not weather dependent.” Mareeba Shire Council has also purchased a steam weeding unit to reduce their use of herbicides in public spaces following good feedback from Douglas Shire Council and Cassowary Coast Regional Council. “With the increased attention on the health of the Great Barrier Reef it is important that councils play their part in enhancing their sustainability commitment,” Mr Lemberg said. “Saturated steam weeding works by raising the temperature inside the plant’s cell and rupturing the cell wall. The plant immediately wilts and changes colour. You can see it going brown in as little as an hour.” Mr Lemberg said some Tablelands farmers had already adopted steam technology as a way of keeping weeds under control. “There is no crop contamination, no withholding period and no accumulation of chemicals as with herbicide use,” he said.

Double win for local innovators A GROWING WALKAMIN company have scored two big wins for innovation with their banana-based products. Natural Evolution Foods (NEF) owners Rob and Krista Watkins won the Best Proven Product category at the Tropical North Queensland Innovation Awards (TNQIA) last Wednesday before taking out the Innovation in Sustainable Technologies Award at the Premier’s Sustainability Awards (PSA) the following night. “I just can’t believe it, we just feel so blessed,” Mrs Watkins said. “Both organisations have seen the value we are adding to the local area. It’s a very humbling feeling.” The TNQIA highlighted NEF’s green banana resistant starch,

banana-based ointments and skin care products, while the PSA praised the company’s “nutro-lock” preservation process, which can turn fresh fruit into powder in under 25 minutes. Established last year, NEF grew out of the Watkins’ original business selling flour produced from excess Cavendish and Lady Finger Bananas for local, national and international markets. The couple now lead the world in selling banana-based products, establishing contracts with suppliers in Japan, the United Kingdom and South Korea. Mrs Watkins said the company was now in talks with suppliers in South America and Asia to license their nutro-lock process. “There’s very strong interest and commitment overseas to build

No words I write can ever say, How much I miss you every day. As time goes by the loneliness grows, How much I miss you nobody knows! I think of you in silence, I often speak your name. But all I have are memories, Of photos in a frame. No one knows my sorrow, No one sees me weep, But the love I have for you, Is in my heart to keep.

I love and miss you Dad as much today, As I did the day you died. Karen, Ronnie, Ronnie and Jack. XXXX

READY TO FIRE: New Mareeba Gladiators recruit George House can’t wait for next season.

THE rugby league season may still be a long way off, but George House has already got that winning feeling. The 20-year-old is one of four big-name recruits Mareeba Gladiators coach Tye Ingebrigtsen has brought in for next year as he tries to turn around the club’s culture and on-field performances. “I’ve got a good feeling about next year, definitely,” House said. “Tye’s got that winning attitude and he really wants the boys to do well, pushing for at least a spot in the finals.” A silky-skilled halfback, House, a Woden Valley Rams junior, played two games for Melbourne Storm in the NRL’s Under 20s competition in 2015 before switching to the Canberra Raiders this year.

But after struggling to get a game, House got a call out of the blue from Ingebrigtsen after a recommendation by his player manager and Ingebrigtsen’s brother, Kim. “I jumped at the opportunity to come up here,” House said. “Tye said he’s done a lot of recruiting and it would be a strong team for next year.” House joins former Northern Pride hooker Maddie Oosen, exWaves Tigers back-rower Liam Saumalu and former Auckland Warriors U20s fullback George Edwards as the Gladiators’ quartet of heavyhitters. “I think I can bring more professionalism in terms of the standards that Tye has set,” House said. “Things like turning up to train-

ing on time, getting into the boys when they’re not doing their job and making sure we’re working hard for each other.” House also doubles as a Northern Pride portability player, meaning he will train with the Cairns-based side during the pre-season and season every Tuesday night, only coming back to the Gladiators if he is not selected to play in the Intrust Super Cup. “The opportunity to come up here and try and crack the Intrust Super Cup is my next goal on the list,” he said. On a local level, House has also been active at Mareeba State High School where he works as a teacher aide mentoring students.

Bacon scrambles Eggs

WELL DONE: David Edwards (right) talks with local Atherton rider Mark Knowles and support crew member Dave Savage after finishing his epic 2000km “Reef Ride” for charity.

MAREEBA’S boys in blue have firmly beaten the town’s tradies in Mareeba Cricket Club’s biannual fundraiser earlier this month. The police team, aptly called Bacon (in yellow), were simply too strong for the tradesmen’s squad, Eggs (in blue), prevailing 301 runs to 206 after 64 overs at Borzi Park. Mareeba Cricket Club vice-president Michael France praised the match. “Each person pays to play, there’s a

sausage sizzle on the day and it’s social,” he said. “It’s great. We start off in the heat but by the afternoon we’ve got all the partners and the kids watching on.” The win by Bacon now squares up the series at three games all since the fundraiser was first launched in 2014. $1400 was raised on the day, with the money split between the club’s juniors and ill police workers Coral Smith and Louise Rimon.

Riding home for a good cause DAVE Edwards was once branded the fat kid with a busted bike. But a lot can change in 10 years. The 23-year-old Paralympic bronze medallist and former Rangeview man turned his long-time passion for cycling into something truly admirable, riding about 2000km from Brisbane to Atherton to raise more than $8500 for mental health charity beyondblue as part of his “Reef Ride” fundraiser. Wanting to honour the memory of his mother Myra Adams who committed suicide in 2014, Mr Edwards was finally able to realise his dream following a successful Paralympics in Rio where he competed as a sighted pilot in the tandem category. “When I started, it was a bit of a shock to the system for the first couple of days,” he said “But I just adapted each day. Some days were better than others… I was just so determined to get it done. I had it planned for so long. “This was very special….Riding to the top of the

Gillies Range was very emotional.” Supported the entire way by friend and Atherton businessman Dave Savage, Mr Edwards rode anywhere between 120km and 325km a day, even deciding to skip a planned overnight stop at Cairns last Saturday to arrive in Atherton a day early. In an incredible show of support, riders from across Queensland joined Mr Edwards on various legs of his ride north as continued to spread awareness of mental health. “Being able to talk about mental health is very important,” he said. “All the way up on the ride, there were people who were telling me how it affected them either directly or indirectly. “I’ve always used riding as therapy…It’s a good time to reflect.” Mr Edwards also praised the “amazing” messages of support he had received from friends and family across Queensland.

Boorman stars for Atherton AFTER a three week break Atherton dusted off their bats and returned to home turf on Saturday, hosting Tully in a two-day match at Loder Park. The hosts elected to bat first after winning the toss and posted a competitive total of 257. Tom Boorman starred for Atherton with 77, and received good support from Pete Sceresini (31) in an 87 run partnership. Nick Watson celebrated his maiden first grade half-century in only his second match at the top level with a cavalier batting performance to make 51 – including a valuable 31 run last wicket partnership with Kyle Bing Chew. Atherton took the field for 6 overs with Seppe Barletta picking up 2 wickets in succession, while Kyle Bing Chew bowled tight lines restricting Tully to 2-13 at stumps. Result after day one (two-day match in progress): Atherton 257 (T Boorman 77, N Watson 51, P Sceresini 31, R Lamperd 26); Tully 2-13 (S Barletta 2-10, K Bing Chew 0-1). With Tully on 2/12, the match resumes this Saturday at Loder Park.

Mareeba’s young cricketers shine at the weekend MAREEBA Cricket’s Under 14 side took on Mulgrave at the weekend on home soil. The day ended in a very tight tussle with Mareeba batting first. The youngsters started well with openers from Ben Jones and Zac Myrteza getting off to a solid start 0 for 53, after 12 overs. After a mini collapse resembling the Aussie's, the ship was steadied with Jarrod France and Arosh Heenkenda to finish at 6 for 104, after 32 overs. In the Field the boys

MAREEBA: PH 4092 3674

started like the South Africans and had Mulgrave 6 for 25, with Mulgrave finishing the day on 8 for 95, off 32 overs. In the Under 12’s, Mareeba had a win against Port Douglas, with Mareeba 3/143 over Port Douglas 5/89. Top scorers for Mareeba were Angus Campman 38 not out, Jase Cureton and Jake Bombardieri both 12 not out, with Best Bowlers being Jake Bombardieri 2/9 and Tristan Lopez 2/12.
