Hearts of gold THE Far North’s biker community have joined forces with generous Tablelanders to spread some much-needed Christmas cheer. Almost 200 bikers from Cooktown to Cardwell revved their hearts out for the annual Tablelands Toy Run last Saturday, collecting toys and donations for children in need. Now in its 20th year, Toy Run co-ordinator Ray Scarlett said he was overwhelmed by the amount of good will on display. FULL STORY – PAGE 7

Bus stop blues By Michael Serenc

A GROUP of disgusting louts who are defecating and urinating at a public bus stop have Atherton business owners up in arms. The angry owners are demanding authorities take action to stamp out the anti-social behaviour. Several spoke out at a meeting with Tablelands councillors last week, saying they were tired of cleaning up after louts at the bus stop on

Main St, while also dealing with the perpetrators’ at times violent and aggressive behaviour. “I’ve had four Mondays in a row where I’ve had to get cleaners, and that’s anything from broken bottles to bodily functions,” Westpac Atherton bank manager Kate Adams said. “The last time I drove in, I did four tyres.” Tablelands Regional Council is looking at plans to expand the existing bus stop, but Deputy Mayor Katrina Spies stressed that would not be done until affected business owners were con-

sulted. “What we’ve said is sound and process we are going through is sound,” she said. “I don’t want there to be a knee-jerk reaction, we need to look at…what we need to do to get a long term outcome that will be the fairest outcome for everyone.” Announced back in April that the bus stop would be upgraded to “meet disability access requirements”, council will spend $35,000 this financial year in a joint funding project with the

TRC Infrastructure Services acting general manager Ashley Greenwood told the group of business owners that if the bus stop upgrade was deferred in this financial year, council would have to hand back funding provided by TMR.

Christmas in Mareeba will be extra special this year with a combined Carols by Candlelight and Christmas Fair this Sunday. Held at Mareeba Turf Club, the free community event promises to be a Christmas spectacular, with face painting and rides for the kids, food and market stalls, live entertainment, Christmas carols and, of course, a vista from Santa Claus. There will also be a special appearance from the Wiggles (Mareeba Theatre Group), as well as local performers of all ages sure to have something for everyone to enjoy. Organisers and performers have been working tirelessly for the past few months to bring the Christmas spirit to Mareeba and mark the start of the festive season. With a theme of “Christmas Together”, organisers are encouraging all families to come along and join in the fun and festivities. The Christmas Fair starts at 4pm, with carols from 6pm and candles will be available to purchase. Proceeds raised at the event will be donated to the Mayor’s Christmas Appeal.

Christmas fun at Mareeba night markets THE festive spirit is alive and well in Mareeba, as the town comes together for its annual Christmas Night Markets. Hosted by Mareeba Post Office Centre, the annual markets will be run every Friday night until Christmas, from December 9. Revellers will be able to enjoy a night out with the whole family with food, entertainment and shopping on offer as the centre transforms into a Christmas wonderland. The markets will feature unique and handmade gifts and treats from the market stalls, as well as retail shops located within the centre – a great way to start your Christmas shopping spree. There will also be delicious food and drinks available at Vincenzo’s Coffee Lounge. For the kids, there is face painting and a colouring-in competition plus a visit from the jolly red man himself, Santa Claus, who will be on hand for photos and Christmas wishes. Customers can stroll through and sing along with the Christmas carols and have a go at the Ambulance Ham Wheel. The Christmas Night Markets will be held on three Fridays leading up to Christmas – December 9, 16 and 23, from 5pm to 9pm each night.

Vandalised bus stop halts upgrade FROM Page 1 While the shelter (roof) section of the new bus stop itself would be no bigger than the existing facility, the total size would be increased to accommodate larger buses, meaning some car parks could potentially go. Giddy’s Place employee Debbie Drury said a bigger bus stop would only add to the existing strain on car parks along Main St. “Where does it stop? There’s people complaining now that they don’t come down the main street because there’s nowhere to park,” she said. “We’re all paying big rent here, we’re trying to all survive.” Mr Greenwood responded that with the

CBD’s amount of congested real estate, “people’s expectations may need to change” when it came to be being able to park directly outside of a local business. “If able-bodied people were really sincere about supporting local business, they would be prepared to walk to do so,” he said. Several business owners at the meeting claimed police were slow to respond or did not respond at all to calls for assistance whenever trouble started at the bus stop. But Atherton Police Acting Officer in Charge Acting Senior-Sergeant Matthew Duncan denied police had received any recent calls from business owners complaining about antisocial behaviour at the bus stop. “There have been issues in the past but noth-

ing recently that I’m aware of,” he said. “In terms of calls for service, I check the logs on a daily basis and if there’s anything in there, I’d know about it.” Sen-Sgt Duncan said while police always maintained at least one crew of two officers on any given shift, it was difficult to respond to all calls for service promptly. “Obviously, they can’t be everywhere at once so there may be times where an incident may occur and gets reported via Policelink or 000, but they might not be in the immediate vicinity to respond straight away,” he said. “By the time they get down there, it could be minutes or hours in some cases, the people involved could have moved on. “The perception might be we’re not re-

sponding but we may not have the capability to respond.” Despite difficulties with response times, Sen-Sgt Duncan said police resources were “adequate” for Atherton. “It’s not a perfect world, but we do respond where we can,” he said. Sen-Sgt Duncan urged any business owners who had issues with the bus stop to call police and offered to personally meet with those affected. Atherton Chamber of Commerce president Albi Homann said no local business had approached him with concerns about the bus stop, and instead suggested an upgraded facility would make the area more inviting to customers.

Surveys start for KUR-World

BIG VISION: KUR-World developer Ken Lee. SURVEY teams assigned to the State Government’s Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) process will run the rule over where a proposed $640 million eco-resort at Myola is to be built. Over the next few months, teams will conduct water quality sampling, look at aquatic ecology, monitor native frogs and take soil, flora and fauna surveys at the 626ha property, which will be home to “KURWorld”. Most of the work will be conducted on site but water quality testing will include the downstream sections of Owens and Warrill Creeks and the Barron River. The testing will cover a number of events from first flush, when rainfall is sufficient to generate runoff, to peak flow and end of flow (late wet season) events. KUR-World developer Reever and Ocean Pty Ltd is also in the process of establishing its Community Reference Group, which has been has been expanded to include both local and regional representatives.

The Queensland Coordinator-General released its Draft Terms of Reference (ToR) for KUR-World’s Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) in August, with more than 20 submissions received from groups and individuals. The final ToR was released in October, which allows KUR-World to prepare its draft EIS, again seeking public consultation and input from government agencies. Assuming the EIS is eventually finalised, the Coordinator-General will then write an evaluation report to either recommend reject or approve the project, which could be subject to a range of conditions. If eventually approved by the State Government and Mareeba Shire Council, KURWorld could eventually feature a 3.5 and 5 star resort, 18 hole golf course, residential villa accommodation, education and business facilities and a health and a wellbeing centre. An equestrian centre and farm theme park are also planned, with the entire development expected to generate 545 jobs during construction and 600 jobs once operational. A start date for Stage 1 of KUR-World is pencilled in for June 2018 at the earliest. If approved, a start date for Stage 1 of KUR-World is pencilled in for June 2018. Meanwhile, repair work on a dam built on the same property is progressing. Reever and Ocean landed themselves in hot water with Mareeba Shire Council back in December when they began construction of a dam without prior approval. Once made aware that same month, the developer was ordered to stop construction of the 1.3ha dam by council officers. The structure is intended to be used by cattle currently on the Barnwell Rd property, which is separate to the eco-resort being proposed.

Call for local artists

ARTS-minded residents in Cook Shire are being urged to join a council advisory committee. The Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) Committee is in need of more volunteer members to help assess applications for funding and provide recommendations to council. “There are currently spaces for three more members on the committee,” Cook Shire Council RADF Liaison Officer Kate Eastick said. “We particularly would like to encourage a diverse range of appli-

cants to the board, including men, youth representatives and indigenous.” Committee members serve for a maximum of three years, but may step down after one year. They must attend RADF meetings and be able to assess RADF applications in a fair and unbiased manner. Recently funded RADF projects in Cook Shire include Indigenous language workshops, mural painting and papier mache workshops. Email mail@cook.qld. gov.au or call 4069 5444.

Shelter upgrade works begin COOKTOWN’S PCYC centre has begun the first of a series of upgrades to transform it into a cyclonerated shelter. Work has begun on drainage to provide stormwater a high flow path around the building. The $1.6 million upgrades will bring the centre closer to reclassification as a cyclone shelter, after discrepancies identified last year meant the shelter had to be classified as a place of refuge only. “This work is aimed at mitigating stormwater coming into the building from overland flow in intense storm events,” said Cook Shire Council Infrastructure Services Manager Robert Uebergang.

The upgrade work will continue until Christmas. Meanwhile, principal contractor Metrobuild will begin works in coming weeks on glazing, latch and bolt upgrades to several doors and windows, as well as weatherproofing and roller door and debris screen replacement. “The centre will remain open during this time, but please be aware of possible changes to access and obey construction site signage,” Mr Uebergang said. Further upgrade works were expected to be put out for tender early in the New Year. Cooktown was rocked by cyclone Nathan in March 2015.

COOK Shire Council’s Biosecurity team will collect samples for identification after a local resident raised concerns about a suspected Singapore ant outbreak. The invasive ant, which builds large colonies and can damage fabric, plastic, electrical wire and rubber materials with its chewing, has been identified in Wujal Wujal and the Tablelands, but there have been

no confirmed sightings in Cooktown. “If Singapore ants are confirmed, we will plan an awareness campaign, including how residents can control the ants,” said Cook Shire Council Senior Biosecurity Officer Cathy Johnson. Ms Johnson said residents should be on the alert for invasice ant species such as yellow crazy ants and electric ants, which have not reached Cook Shire, and encouraged those

who see unusual ants to report the sightings to council’s Biosecurity Services team. “It is great that a member of the public has reported this suspected Singapore ant sighting to council, and we hope that everyone is keeping an eye out for other serious invasive ants in their area,” she said. Contact biosecurity@cook.qld. gov.au or phone on 4069 5444.

Assets increase after de-amalgamation A PREVIOUS “oversight” by Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) officers has been corrected to reveal a $7 million boost in the value of council’s financial register. But Tablelands mayor Joe Paronella denied council had lost track of the assets in question, saying they were always on the asset register and were highlighted in a post de-amalgamation evaluation, which resulted in them being placed on the financial register. According to council’s annual financial report, council owned $525 million worth of assets in the 2015/16 financial year compared to $518 million in 2014/15.

Council achieved a modest operational surplus of $2.5 million in 2015/16, coupled with a total or net surplus of $15.2 million. 69 per cent of operating revenue came from rates, levies and charges and 18 per cent from grants and subsidies. Council’s largest operating expenditure, employee expenses, made up 43 per cent of total expenditure, followed by materials and services at 34 per cent. Former mayor Rosa Lee Long was paid $92,481.60 plus superannuation before being voted out in March. Former Division 2 councillor Sharron Linwood claimed the largest

amount of expenses at $12,429.80, followed by former Cr Long ($11,686.77) and former deputy mayor Geoff Stocker ($10,227.93). Given they were only elected in March, TRC’s current councillors have not yet accrued anything close to a year’s worth of salary and expenses. While no longer sitting on council, the report noted both former councillors Marjorie Pagani and Peter Hodge were reported under local government regulations for two separate incidents. However, the complaints assessor decided to take no further action against former Cr Pagani due to its “frivolous” nature.

Dam level lowest in 12 years By Michael Serenc THE water capacity of Tinaroo Dam has hit its lowest level in more than a decade as Tablelanders pray for rain. The dam’s capacity is currently around the 37 per cent mark, levels not seen since February 2004. Figures provided to The Express by dam operator SunWater also show the lowest level Tinaroo has reached in the past 22 years was on December 28, 2003, when capacity dropped to an alarming 23.64 per cent. But SunWater Mareeba service manager Charlie Martens said he was confident there would be enough water to service Tablelands residents and farmers heading into next year, after increasing the water allocation to irrigators from 70 per cent to 75 per cent at the start of November. SunWater resets Tinaroo’s base level of water allocation given to irrigators in the Mareeba-Dimbulah scheme at the start of every water year (July 1), which is then reviewed on a monthly basis and, if feasible, can be increased on top of the

base level of allocation set. “If the water level gets very low, we’ll be working closely with our customers to determine what that will mean for their cropping and how we deliver that water,” Mr Martens said. “If the water level is really low, it’ll be hard for us to deliver similar amounts of water than we currently do.” Mr Martens said he was hopeful of a strong wet season to help top up the dam, which in turn would mean an increased water allocation for farmers. The last major increase in water level at Tinaroo Falls Dam was in 2015 and the level has been steadily decreasing ever since. Mareeba District Fruit and Vegetables Growers Association president Joe Moro said farmers were more concerned about the 2017/18 water year and what the allocation was likely to be if another poor wet season came through. Pictures taken by local drone operator Brendan Keeling of Aertography and published by The Express in last week’s paper show just how much the water level has dropped in the space of two years.

Toy Run a roaring success Mareeba Toyota technical advisor Jamahl Byrne was named MTAQ’s Apprentice of the Year.

Toyota mechanic is the best in state A LIFE-LONG passion for cars has earned a Mareeba mechanic state-wide accolades. Newly qualified Mareeba Toyota technical advisor Jamahl Byrne won Apprentice of the Year at the Motor Trade Association of Queensland President’s Ball on November 19. Mr Byrne, who started his career as a school-based apprentice in 2012 with MTAQ before qualifying last year, said the award reflected his desire to become the best in his field. “I love everything about cars,” he said. “When it comes to repairs and running diagnostics, every day is different. You always see different things.” The 20-year-old earned his stripes while working at both Mareeba Toyota and Hansen Ford. Toyota Fixed Operations manager Luke Micklewright praised Mr By-

Lingerie

rne’s achievement, saying the youngster showed an uncommon willingness to listen and learn from his superiors. “Jamahl wants to succeed. I don’t think it would matter what he was doing, he’d want to be at the top of the class,” he said. “He doesn’t give half an effort, he gives a 100 per cent. “What we have to do now is keep Jamahl interested.” Mr Byrne is currently undergoing training to become a Toyota “master technician” with Mr Micklewright hopeful he could qualify by the end of next year. In his spare time, Mr Byrne has restored a 1966 Mustang and said he dreamed of one day being able to work on V8 Supercars or F1 cars. As part of his win, Mr Byrne will also get a garage tour of V8 Supercar team Triple Eight Race Engineering and $2000 in prize money.

BIKERS from across the Far North have helped to brighten up the lives of Tablelands children, just in time for Christmas. Run by the Highland Restorer’s Club, almost 200 motorbike riders came together for the annual Tablelands Toy Run last Saturday, collecting new toys and donations from generous locals in the region on behalf of the Salvation Army’s Red Shield Appeal. Highland Restorer’s Club member and Toy Run co-ordinator Ray Scarlett said he was gobsmacked by the generosity on display as the bikers rode through several Tablelands towns including Kairi, Yungaburra Markets and the Malanda Showgrounds. “The highlight was to see the smiles on people’s faces as they came up and handed over the toys,” he said. “We have our regular riders who come every year, but quite a few people in our group, like the Indigenous Brothers, had never been to our Toy Run before,

said they’ll be back next year. “It’s such a good atmosphere…When we rode into the Yungaburra Markets, to hear the noise and to see the people coming in and the kids laughing was just fantastic. It makes such a difference.” The Toy Run was escorted by police and firefighters and led by the jolly red man himself, Santa. It finished up at Tolga Oval close to midday, where organises handed over their donations to the Salvation Army. Mr Scarlett said Salvation Army Lieutenant Kate Cathcart “was absolutely touched” by the outpouring of generosity. “She made the point that this is the community giving to the community and there’s nothing better than to see that happen where we look after our own,” he said. Donations from the Toy Run were still being tallied at the time of going to print.

SENDING THE MESSAGE: (left to right) Colin Wason, Barry Conway, Norrie Wilson, Phillip Mathieson, Eddie Hastie and Sylvester Brumby attended Friday’s White Ribbon Day barbecue.

Community unites and homestay program supervisor Robert Larkin said the informal gathering was designed to reinforce the message that domestic violence would not be tolerated full stop. “We’re taking a stance to say it’s not acceptable in this community and if you see it, stand up and speak out,” he said. “We’re not supposed to be violent to any one, we’re supposed to respect each other.” Mr Larkin said the barbecue generated a “great” response from community groups. “We had a very broad cross sec-

tion of services and community members,” he said. “It’s a constant process. You’ve got to continually push the message…Everybody in the community has to stand up and said we won’t accept this against women, children or anybody. “This is something that affects everybody. MCHC is not a domestic violence service but we still feel the impact of it.” Held annually on November 25, “White Ribbon Day” is also known as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Again Women.

Dance spectacular for region MORE than 130 young Tablelands dancers are set to dazzle locals in two special performances this Saturday. Local dance school in2dance will put on their annual concert spectacular featuring a matinee and evening performance at Atherton State High School, capping off another successful year for students. in2dance owner and school principal Lorraine Peressini said audience members could expect an action-packed day, with the students performing to music from several popular films, including Fast & Furious, Lion King, Singing in the Rain and Burlesque. “No matter what their taste, the audience is certainly going to be entertained,” she said. “We like to keep it light and bright to appeal to people…There’s certainly a lot of variety.” Mrs Peressini said it had been a sixweek effort by both staff and students to rehearse for both performances. “It’s the highlight of the year for the students. They get to dance with their friends up on the stage…and get dressed up in fancy costumes,” she said. “It’s a real adrenaline rush.” Mrs Peressini said some students came from as far afield as Dimbulah, Mareeba, Ravenshoe and Malanda to perform at the Atherton concert. The “in2dance Spectacular” will start with a matinee at 1:30pm following by an evening performance

Rich history and committed future Peter and Tom Lindsay began their transport business when they bought three old trucks way back in 1953. By 1970, the fleet had swelled to 20 with operations expanding to Queensland. Lindsay Transport would soon enter the business of chilled freight and since has become one of Australia’s largest refrigerated transport companies. From Boambee near Coffs Harbour, Lindsay made a name for itself as a highly regarded company in Australian road transport, maintaining a highly personalised experience no matter who you dealt with. Lindsay Australia has since developed into a fully integrated transport, logistics and rural supply company with a focus on premium service to major customers in the food processing, food services fresh produce, rural, horticultural and food export sectors. Under the Lindsay Australia banner are three unique fully integrated divisions: Lindsay Transport, Lindsay Rural and Lindsay Fresh Logistics, formed in 2014. With one of the largest refrigerated fleets combining a wide network of refrigerated warehouses, Lindsay Transport maintains cold chain dependability with strategically located terminals to maximise the company’s operations though seasonal fluctuations. They service a diverse industry where demand for precision handling is met day in, day out. The entire fleet is satellite-tracked across Queensland, NSW, Victoria and

out into South Australia, meaning their clients have complete trust in their reliability. In 1983, Kim Lindsay’s streak of independence led him to establish Lindsay Rural, the first rural supply company accredited Australia wide that offers an extensive range of products and services which provide vital sustaining support for growers. Knowing growers’ needs means Lindsay Rural is keenly aware of their clients’ changing requirements, particularly in the field consulting with Agronomy services providing sound advice. The establishment of Lindsay’s Fresh Logistics represents a further expansion of Lindsay Australia’s industry leading operations. Lindsay Fresh Logistics provides comprehensive customer service. From paddock to port, Lindsay does the lot. Reliability is a cornerstone of Lindsay and that’s why their fleet is maintained to a high level, just as the founding Lindsay brothers envisaged. Now in its seventh decade of operations, the proud Lindsay name is recognised across Australia, from regional towns such as Mareeba to major capital cities. We protect and move the most valuable freight there is – the food that feeds the nation. Comprehensive solutions are now available to farmers of the Far North from the new Mareeba Depot now open in the Mareeba Industrial Park.

Members of the Lindsay Australia board will officially open the new Mareeba facility on Thursday, December 1.

$9.5m facility gets thumbs up Lindsay Australia’s new $9.5 million transport hub in Mareeba is set to officially open tomorrow. The company’s chairman, John Pressler, and the entire Lindsay Board will attend the highly anticipated opening after construction started earlier this year. The impressive facility is located at the new Mareeba Industrial Park and has the potential to put the town on the transport map.

The state-of-the-art hub is a ringing endorsement of the future in farming in Far North Queensland. “This is so worth it. We’ve been waiting for quite a long time to be able to expand up here, there is a great future here and Lindsay wants to be a part of it”, said Mr Pressler. The 22,500 m2 site will contain all three Lindsay Australia divisions including Lindsay Transport, Lindsay Rural and Lindsay

Fresh Logistics, giving local farmers access to supplies, cold storage facilities, transport bays and much more. “Farmers will have the opportunity to have as good a cold storage and transport facility as anywhere in Australia,” Mr Pressler said. “It is a wonderful facility and the farming community will be well served by it.” Mr Pressler said Mareeba was an “emerging area” for Lindsay Rural.

“We’re focusing a lot of attention on this area, making sure we establish ourselves and keep increasing our market share of this district,” he said. “There’s a great future here and we’re proud to be a part of it.” The facility is now fully operational and farmers are welcome to visit the new facility at Mareeba Industrial Park. Call the office on 4086 3400.

The LAND Mareeba District Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association president association Joe Moro is one of many farmers across Australia that rely upon working backpackers.

Backpacker tax ‘farce’ THE fallout over the Federal Government’s proposed backpacker tax has continued with a Mareeba farming identity slamming all sides for their inability to compromise. The future of the tax is being decided this week, with a risk of it defaulting to its original 32.5 per cent rate on working holiday makers after the Senate voted last Thursday to amend the government’s 19 per cent tax Bill with a lower 10.5 per cent tax. That prompted the Bill to be sent back to the House of Representatives, where the government rejected the 10.5 per cent amendment and reinstated the 19 per cent tax. The Senate is now in the throes of debating whether or not to pass the Bill, with only tomorrow remaining as the last chance for parliament to sit before the Christmas break. Proponents of the 10.5 per cent tax say that would put Australia on par with New Zealand when it came to taxing backpackers, but the government is

reluctant to go that low because of its need to generate sufficient revenue. If the Bill is not passed this week by the Senate, it will then revert to the 32.5 per cent rate on working holiday makers earning up to $18,200 from January 1. Mareeba District Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association president Joe Moro said the entire process – from the government’s alleged “consultation” with farmers to the opposition’s and crossbenchers’ refusal to approve the Bill – had been a farce. “It’s tough enough as it is in the farming sector and we’re now seeing a parliament messing around with people’s livelihoods,” he said. “It could have been a much better result if the farming sector had been consulted from day one.” Mr Moro said the situation would have a “flow-on effect to all of Australia” if a decision could not be reached and no working backpackers visited because of the high 32.5 per cent tax.

MSF wins green award SUGAR producer MSF has been recognised for its environmental-friendly efforts at the Premier’s Sustainability Awards. MSF won the Rural Award, noted for its sustainable farming practices and adoption of green technology such as bioplastics. “MSF Sugar has demonstrated its leadership in farming system innovations. We adopt smart, green technology and we engage in continual research and monitoring,” said Agriculture general manager Trevor Cook. “We are reducing our carbon footprint, conserving energy and reducing

The week started slowly with the failure of the bagasse reclaim system that required a full plant shutdown to address. For the remainder of the week the processing side of the factory continued to deal with low purity material, slowing crushing rates. The final cane at Mossman Mill for 2016 was crushed at 7:11am on Friday 18th November and processing of factory stocks continued until Saturday afternoon shift. Tablelands Mill is expected to finish crushing on Tuesday 22nd November. waste while meeting our productivity and profitability targets.” The awards noted MSF’s “Modern Farming” system, which shares the company’s integrated farming approach with other farming groups, aimed at reducing water quality impacts and promoting better farming practices. “Our Modern Farming practices demonstrate a sustained and substantial level of commitment to delivery farm improvements in several catchments of the Reef,” Mr Cook said. MSF is also a part of an industrywide accreditation scheme, SmartCane Best Management Practice, impacting

positively on cane growing throughout the State while its heavy investment into installation of low pressure irrigation systems is reducing soil erosion and increasing water use efficiency. The company will start work on a $75 million green power station at the Tableland Mill in Mareeba from next May, powered entirely by excess sugar cane fibre. “MSF Sugar strives to be a good corporate citizen and given our proximity to the Great Barrier Reef, we recognise that continually improving our environmental stewardship is of utmost importance,” Mr Cook said.

Mareeba cricketers claim win

MAREEBA Cricket’s Under 14 boys played well in their two-day game against Mulgrave to come away with a narrow first innings win. After adding only 16 runs to the total from last weekend, the boys were all out for 120. It was then left to the bowlers to get the side a win. Zac Myrteza with 3 for 10 and Brendan Johns 3 for 13, wrapped up Mulgrave to leave them 12 runs short. The second innings followed with Brendan knocking up a great 50 with the bat – Mareeba 3 for 89. Mulgrave finished the day at 5 for 74. Good bowling was had from from Liam Rofe and Ben Jones, who both grabbed two wickets each. The teams final game before the Christmas break is this weekend where the under 14s and 16s will both play a one-day match at Kerribee Park, starting in the morning. In the Under 12’s, the young and improving Mareeba side fought hard, but went down to Atherton (1) who scored 1/174, to Mareeba’s 6/139. Best batters for Mareeba were Tristan Lopez and Jack Kruse, both with 20 not out. The only wicket of the innings went to Jake Bombardieri with 1/12 and Patrick Cockburn in his first game for Mareeba finished with 0/7 off a blistering three overs.
