2017 MAREEBA RODEO
RODEO FEATURE PAGES 9 TO 14
JULY 15-16
Rodeo action all weekend!!
The Atherton Show went off with a bang earlier this week when thousands of people poured through the gates at the town’s showgrounds. The rain held off and allowed show goers to lap up the excitement of the rides and show bags. From the horse events to the dog show, to the woodchopping, there was something happening every minute of the two day event. Trick rider Mikayla Jade drew gasps from the crowd as she galloped around the main arena performing stunts from the back of a horse and the Dream State fire show and circus workshops were a massive hit. The fireworks and show exhibits were massively popular. For the first time in Atherton Show history a ‘Dress up your Business Competition’ was held, with the winning business going to Bud ‘n’ Bloom Florist in Atherton. Pictured is Theresa and Stephanie Barletta of Bud ‘n’ Bloom who have won a $2500 website package sponsored by Designer in Your Pocket, for their efforts. Make sure you pick up a copy of next week’s Express for photos and a run down of all the fun.

$8.3m boost to infrastructure
Minister for State Development and Minister for Natural Resources and Mines the Honourable Dr Anthony Lynham was in Kuranda last Tuesday, July 4 to announce $8.3m in infrastructure for Far North Queensland. Mareeba Shire Council will received $395,053 of that to safeguard and increase the capacity of the wastewater system in the Kenneally Road area in Mareeba. “The upgrade is critical to the functioning of
the Mareeba community, and failure to undertake the wastewater system upgrade will significantly impact the community’s prosperity and wellbeing,” Cr Gilmore said. “The project will secure an effective wastewater system to safeguard public health and the health of waterways.” The upgrade will create further economic development, employment opportunities and enable continued residential development in Mareeba.
Locals urged to help cancer charity
Dylan Ashford (front), Marshall Ney and David Jeffrey are part of the Mareeba Coles team helping to raise money for SecondBite.
Cancer Council Queensland’s Mareeba Volunteer Branch is encouraging locals to give as little or as much as they can to support the community. The Branch have been fundraising all year as participants of the CancerFREE Challenge, a campaign which rewards and acknowledges Queensland’s most talented fundraisers in the State by inviting them to fundraise in 2017 and compete for the rights to name a research grant. Volunteer Annette Morrison said the branch enjoyed raising funds to support Cancer Council Queensland’s work.
“When people are diagnosed with cancer, they often feel lost and don’t know what to do,” said Ms Morrison. “Our sole purpose as a branch is to support people diagnosed with cancer – that is why we constantly fundraise.” The Mareeba Branch held a Biggest Morning Tea earlier this year, raising $2000 for the cause, and have now turned their attention to Daffodil Day. This year, the Branch is hoping to make Daffodil Day, held August 25, an event the whole community can participate in. In Far North Queensland around 1430 people are diagnosed with cancer every year.
Helping feed those in need In the past 12 months Coles in Mareeba has donated more than 3,000 kilograms of surplus fresh food to youths at Mareeba PCYC. Now the store is helping raise money for SecondBite – a national charity that redistributes surplus food – as part of a five week fundraising campaign. For every $2 donation card purchased at Coles between July 5 and August 8, SecondBite can provide the equivalent of eight healthy meals to Australians doing it tough.
All donations raised over the next five weeks will help people in need across Australia by supporting SecondBite to collect and redistribute surplus fresh food, and provide it completely free of charge wherever it is needed. SecondBite CEO Jim Mullan said more funding was required to pay for operational costs involved in providing food to the increasing number of people in need. “Across Australia we now work with around 1300 fantastic community
groups to distribute surplus food from Coles to people in need,” he said. “However, we need funds to pay for our ongoing operating expenses such as fuel, transport and refrigeration so we can deliver this food. “By donating to SecondBite, people can help us to reach more people experiencing hardship.” Coles State General Manager Jerry Farrell encouraged shoppers to get behind the fundraising campaign this winter. “Too many people in
our community cannot afford nutritious food for themselves and their families. By raising funds for SecondBite, we hope we can help get more meals on the table for people in need,” he said. SecondBite has partnered with Coles since November 2011 to rescue surplus fresh, nutritious food for people in need. Funding from last year’s Secondbite Winter Appeal at Coles helped to deliver food more efficiently and cost effectively to community groups.

ral residential to rural. “The application we lodged last week was the notification required advising the council of our intent to lodge an application to be considered under the superseded planning scheme,” said Mr Lawson. But local residents who are opposed to the development say the move is indicative that the resort will not be going ahead. “Ken Lee can most likely see the writing on the wall that his mega concrete resort will never be realised
and this is his next best option to make money out of his cheap rural land,” said Steven Nowakowski on behalf of the Kuranda Region Planning Group. “A close eye will also be placed on Mareeba Shire Council and State Government to make sure they do what is right for our community and uphold planning integrity”. The plan is that Kur-World will be spread over a 626 hectare site in Myola focusing on eco-tourism with a medical retreat, rainforest
education centre, a range of sporting and outdoor activities, an adventure park and an equestrian centre among other things. Mr Lawson said the team behind the development is “committed to the Kur-World project and developing its vision in full. “Baseline studies of the EIS, providing a thorough assessment of existing environmental, social, economic and built infrastructure conditions are now complete,” he said. “Focus will then move
on to assessing the impacts of the project against the baseline studies as part of the EIS process, with the aim of completion of the approval process this year. “If the EIS approval process is successful construction of stage 1 will likely commence in July 2018.” He went on to say that the developers have taken on board the concerns of local residents and have made changes to their plans in line with the feedback they have received.
“The very nature of development means it’s unlikely you will please everyone but we have put a heavy focus on engaging with the community and have made several changes to the proposal as a result of valued feedback,” he said. “KUR-World will provide a unique tourism experience offering a diverse range of activities. We are confident that, when complete, locals will see it as a valuable addition to the community and the economy.”
Kur-World still going ahead KUR-World development manager Mark Lawson said plans are still forging ahead for the $650 million eco-resort and that construction on stage 1 will begin next year, despite an application lodged with Mareeba Shire Council to potentially use the site for residential homes instead. On July 1 Mareeba Shire Council’s new planning scheme came into effect, which changed the zoning of the land from ru-

$50,000 boost to mental health in Mareeba A mental health program in Mareeba has been given a $50,000 boost thanks to the Queensland Health Commission. The Hand Up (Not Hand Out) Mareeba Men program helps local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men sustain supportive relationships and community connection. The funding extends the successful Hand Up program by the Mulungu Aboriginal Corporation Primary Health Care Service for another 12 months, including continued employment of the program’s Male Project Officer. “The project officer has been critical to the program’s success,” said New Queensland Mental Health Commissioner Ivan Frkovic. “He is a Mareeba traditional owner who provides strong cultural grounding for local men reconnecting to land and culture.” The funding initiatives are under the commissions 2016-17 Stronger Community Mental Health and Wellbeing grants program. $50,000 is also going to not-for-profit group Act for Kids, to support Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander carers of children under child protection on Cape York. Mr Frkovic said residential care workers often experienced their own family and wellbeing stresses and challenges. “To support their important work, we’ve funded a culturally tailored Family Wellbeing Program, to help carers more
effectively nurture the wellbeing of the children they look after,” he said. “Up to 18 staff from the Aurukun, Napranum, Pormpuraaw, Kowanyama and Doomadgee communities will participate.” The Commission provided $50,000 to Phunktional Limited for phase two of the Yumpla Project, a Respectful Relationships project to increase the safety, mental and physical wellbeing of young people in remote Far North Queensland communities. Minister for Health and Ambulance Services Cameron Dick said the investment was underpinned by the Palaszczuk Government’s commitment to partner with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community health sector. “There are a number of services already providing culturally appropriate and accessible mental health services,” Mr Dick said “Mental health is a crucial determinant of an individual’s health and wellbeing. Working collaboratively right across the service system is the best way to provide the highest quality care to Queenslanders,” he said. Mental Health Commissioner Ivan Frkovic said: “Connection to, and pride and strength in culture, land and sea underpin all of the projects. “Each initiative works to promote community healing and inclusion, thriving, connected families and resilient people.”
Mt Garnet pool forced to close Workplace Health and Safety Queensland have requested the immediate closure of Mount Garnet pool due to concerns raised by a community member around the ability of the public to access the facility unsupervised. “This is an unfortunate situation for the Mount Garnet, Innot Hot Springs, Millstream and Ravenshoe communities who have worked closely with Council to enable the reestablishment of access to this
facility through consultation over the last year,” said Mayor Joe Paronella. A token operated turnstile has been installed at the pool to enable access to the five lane, 25 metre pool without the reliance on an operator at the facility, similar to Georgetown and Charters Towers pools. Tokens have been available for collection from the Mount Garnet Visitor Information Centre for $2 per adult and $1 per child under 18 years of age.
$2 million for Mareeba Hospital By Rebecca Wallis
Locals can breathe a sigh of relief this week as the coalition government announced on Friday it would be stumping up $2 million in funding for Mareeba Hospital. In a statement Federal Member for Leichhardt, Warren Entsch said the money would help to ‘reduce pressure on the Mareeba Hospital’s emergency department’ and ‘support both GP services and local residents with complex or chronic conditions, to help keep them well and out of hospital’. “This is a big win for the local community and something which is extremely important for the entire region,” Mr Entsch said. “Access to GP services is vital and I am pleased to see the community’s concerns have been listened to and that the announcement gives certainty to local residents.” The news came just days after a visit from the board of the Cairns Hinterland Hospital and Health Service. The newly-formed group chose to hold their second meeting in Mareeba last Wednesday, including a tour of the hospital and an invitation-only community meeting.
“We want to be a board with an eye to the future and part of that is getting out and meeting with people, meeting with the communities that we serve, and seeing first-hand the health challenges and needs of our population,” Chairman of the board Clive Skarott said. “It is the intention of the new board to be extremely proactive about ensuring the health needs of the communities we serve are being met, concerns are being heard and addressed, and we are constantly having open and direct conversations with the community about where we are headed in the future.” Minister for Health said the Coalition Government is committed to making sure our health system continues to be one of the best in the world. “Being able to access the best doctors, nurses, hospitals and medicines is central to that and a key part of our announcement,” Minister Hunt said. “I want to pay tribute to Warren’s advocacy of this issue and the importance he has placed on it, not just in Mareeba but for the entire region,” he said. The population growth of the Mareeba region means the community is now better placed to support local general practice

Minister Hunt said. The Northern Queensland PHN will receive the funding and will work closely with the commu-
nity to understand their specific health needs and engage local health service providers.

International Rotary President’s first visit in 30 years
Friday was World Chocolate Day! Celebrated every year to mark 467 years since chocolate was introduced to Europe, it is also used by many as a good excuse to devour lots of chocolate. The Tablelands is a chocolate lovers paradise where addicts can sample chocolate grown and produced right here and even see it being made like at Gallo Dairyland on Malanda Road, Atherton. Catherine Robertson (pictured) made sure she didn’t miss out on any!
FAR North Queensland will welcome the first visit by a Rotary International President in 30 years when Ian Riseley arrives later this month. Mr Riseley will visit Cairns, the Tablelands and Fitzroy Island during his five-day tour of the region, meeting with local leaders and Rotarians to view progress on a range of projects and discuss community issues. That will include a tour of Rocky Creek’s restored World War II igloo, the Mareeba Wetlands and a meeting to discuss Rotary’s ongoing Peace and Confliction Resolution project in the Aboriginal community of Aurukun with Far Northern Assistant Police Commissioner Paul Taylor. Rotary District 9550 Governor Robert Tardiani, whose district takes in Darwin, Timor-Leste and all of North Queensland including Thursday Island, said Mr Riseley would be warmly welcomed by Rotarians. “It’s been 30 years since a Rotary International President has visited the Aus-
tralian part of our district,” Mr Tardiani said. “We’re all looking forward to his visit.” Mr Tardiani said Mr Riseley had specifically asked to visit the Far North. “Even though he’s only coming to the Cairns region, he’ll get an understanding of what we’re doing up here,” he said. A chartered accountant based in Victoria, Mr Riseley has received a swathe of honours since becoming a Rotarian in 1978. They include the AusAID Peacebuilder Award for his work in East Timor (Timor-Leste), the Medal of the Order of Australia for services to the Australian community, the Distinguished Service Award and the Regional Service Award for a Polio-Free World from The Rotary Foundation. Mareeba-born docs get fit for bike ride
TWO heart doctors who both hail from Mareeba’s tobacco farms and now work together in Cairns will join forces in September to tackle a three day, 333km bike ride to raise money for crucial life-saving medical equipment. Anthony Brazzale is a cardiologist who was inspired to become a doctor after travelling with his grandfather to Brisbane for regular electrophysiologist appointments when he was a child. His grandfather, Guido Brazzale spoke mainly Italian, so when he needed to communicate with his doctor, young Anthony was rallied in to help translate. The experience led him down the path of medicine and after studying at JCU Cairns and Townsville, he travelled to Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast and Melbourne to further his education. He is now based in Cairns with fellow local Greg Starmer – Cairns Hospital director of cardiology. Greg’s father worked for the tobacco growers organisation for most of his working life but his interest in medicine came about through typical boy-
hood injuries. As a child, Anthony competed against Greg’s “little” brother Alex in athletics. The pair were fierce rivals and very good friends, and still are. “I did all the usual things that boys do, ended up in hospital, and the doctors would patch me up,” Dr Starmer said. “I always planned to go back to the Tablelands as a rural GP, but I met my wife in Brisbane and while she was furthering her studies, the director of cardiology at the Princess Alexandra Hospital suggested I might have a future in interventional cardiology,” he said. Ironically, Dr Starmer’s grandfather died of a heart attack. “Well before the technology that we have today,” he said. “I was only young but it certainly stuck with me. “The biggest thing for me when I went away to study 20 years ago, was seeing the standard of health care in Brisbane compared to what I knew we had in Far North Queensland.” Dr Starmer and many of the cardiac units always fundraised for and take part in the annual Mount Frank-

Farmstay and Homestay is for everyone Sebastian Di Salvo is the Tablelands’ biggest Cowboys fan.
While a bunch of cowboys will be kicking up dust this weekend in Mareeba, cowboys of a different kind will be hitting the dirt in Cairns. North Queensland Cowboys will be going against the South Sydney Rabbitohs this Sunday, July 16, and 15-year-old St Stephens School student Sebastian Di Salvo can’t wait. The die-hard Cowboys supporter has barely missed
Janine Bowmaker, Managing Director of Banora International Group which incorporates Farmstays and Homestays across Queensland says “I believe hosting students is a fantastic experience for all ages but in particular for children as it enables them to have an intercultural experience in the comfort of their own home, rather than going abroad”. “My first experience hosting was at 16 years of age, I was a farmer’s daughter and was mesmerised by the fact people spoke different languages, ate different food, and wore different clothing”.
“Now I am fluent in Japanese and run an international company! Languages open up opportunities and our programs create lifelong friendships”. Banora International Group has been instrumental in giving international visitors a unique insight into how Aussie’s live both on the farm and in their homes for the last 21 years. The Farmstay division of the company manages Farmstays across the country while the Homestay division introduces visitors and students to the Queensland way of life.

The Atherton Tablelands plays host to both Farmstay and Homestay: where they work collaboratively with local schools to provide study tour programs for visitors. This coming August two international groups of students will be attending Atherton State High School as part of their visit to Australian farms and homes and Banora are looking for families who can play host to some of them. If you are interested in showing these students how we, as Aussie’s live, please give Janine a call on 4041 7990. She look forward to hearing from you.
a game either on TV or live in Townsville since he became a super fan when he was six years old. “I like them because they’re our closest team so I’ve always supported them,” said the year 9 student from Mareeba. “The last couple of seasons they started off a bit slow but they always come back. They’ll definitely beat the Souths.” Gutted to be unable to attend the live game in
Cairns due to family commitments, Sebastian will be watching with keen interest from the comfort of his own home. With ambitions to be a sports commentator when he’s older, the Cowboys member has an uncanny ability to recall facts and information about his favourite team going back centuries. The Rabbitohs will take on the Cowboys at Barlow Park on Sunday at 4pm.

Traditional dancers took to the stage during the celebrations.
NAIDOC Day marred by death By Rebecca Wallis
NAIDOC week celebrations took a sombre turn in Kuranda with the death of a prominent member of the Kuranda Aboriginal society who passed away early Thursday morning. Ivan Brim was one of the local tribe’s elders and was remembered at the Kuranda Amphitheatre during NAIDOC celebrations on July 6 as someone who had
done “so much for the community”. A minute’s silence was held in his honour. Ivan became famous in 2002 when Prince Philip was visiting the region. Dressed in traditional clothing of just loin cloth and body paint, he was asked: “do you still throw spears at each other?” The gaffe went down in history as one of Prince Philip’s many absent minded moments. Despite the bad news,
the celebrations continued on throughout the day. Aboriginals and Islanders came together with a march through the town in the morning followed by elders morning tea and a Kup Mauri lunch. Cultural groups took to the stage to perform traditional dances and the venue was packed with displays by local groups, face painting and revellers enjoying the entertainment. NAIDOC, which stands for National Aboriginal and
Islanders Day Observance Committee, is an annual event that increases awareness in the wider community of the status and treatment of Indigenous Australians. It is a time to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, culture and achievements and is an opportunity to recognise the contributions that Indigenous Australians make to our country and society.

The 2017 Yamaha Mareeba Rodeo is fast approaching and a small team of volunteers have already done a mountain of work to prepare the grounds at Kerribee Park for what is looking to be another huge Festival. We welcome competitors from all over Australia who travel north to match it with our local champions in one of the biggest Rodeo’s in Australia with over $50,000 in total prize money. What has improved the most over the years is the production of the complete event that is this year titled the Yamaha Mareeba Rodeo. It includes the Mareeba Mazda Downtown Parade, the Bendigo Bank Agricultural Show, the Side Show Alley and Woodchops arena and all the action that takes place in centre ring including the ABCRA Rodeo Programme with added Novelty events including the Bucking Ponies, Trick Riding Demonstrations and Comedy Clown Big Al. An absolute must to see is the RTS Concreting Interstate Rodeo Challenge with QLD
and NSW going head to head in a State of Origin Battle in the Main Rodeo Events on Saturday Night. We have 12 Lovely Ladies entered in the Rodeo Queen Competition this year, sponsored by the Mareeba Leagues Club, and they have been busy attending numerous functions and being judged throughout the Festival. The winners will be crowned on Friday Night on stage at the Parade and Mardigras but I think they are all winners for taking part. The Yamaha Mareeba Rodeo is not just a Rodeo it is a celebration of our country lifestyle, so I invite you all to be a part of this major regional event and if you haven’t been to the rodeo for years please come and see how we have grown to be a true spectacle of entertainment. The Mareeba Rodeo Association has gone to great expense to secure a fantastic Big Screen Production for this years rodeo which includes RATCH Australia Corp. Big Screen with an additional screen in the
Bronc Bar so you don’t have to miss any of the action. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who helps and supports in any way with presenting the event, our Sponsors especially Yamaha and Mareeba Yamaha our event partners for 2017, Committee and Volunteers, Rotary and Lions Clubs, SES, the Travelling Community and those who have assisted over many years. This is my first year as President and I have thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to assist in this role and look forward to seeing everyone at the Yamaha Mareeba Rodeo, please be safe and enjoy the hospitality of the Mareeba Rodeo Association for 2017.

Wyatt Milgate will be competing in the Novice Bulls this weekend at the rodeo.
Young Wyatt’s a Mareeba Rodeo veteran
By Rebecca Wallis
One of the hottest rising talents on the bull riding scene right now is 16-year-old Wyatt Milgate who fresh from winning the junior bull ride in Mareeba a few weeks ago is in prime position for a big win at this weekend’s rodeo. The third generation bull rider has been to the rodeo every year since he was born, thanks to dad Kyle’s passion for the sport. Although he quit riding when Wyatt was born, Kyle had previously competed overseas and knows what it takes to get all the way to the top. Good thing for Wyatt who plans to make a career out of it. “I love riding there (at Mareeba Rodeo),” says Wyatt, who is in Year 11
at St Stephen’s School. “All my friends come out and support me and I love riding in front of a good crowd with a good atmosphere.” Wyatt is no stranger to success in the arena after last year coming runner-up in the North Queensland Junior Bull riding championships. In 2015 he was the North Queensland Steer Riding Champion. Three times he’s made it to the National Finals in Tamworth, making him one of the 15 best riders in the country. “I’d like to qualify in the PBR if I can,” says Wyatt of his future in the sport. “And head over to the States to try and ride over there. There’s a lot more competition over there and bigger money.” Wyatt’s family have a property in Bibhoo-
www.theexpressnewspaper.com.au
ra where he is lucky enough to have access to two bulls for practice. After his dad showed him the ropes (literally!) he was hooked. He now classes his dad and his ‘pop’ as his biggest idols. But as he’s only just started riding novice bulls this year (you have to be 16), hopping on one in front of a few thousand people this weekend is leaving him feeling a little apprehensive. “I’m a little bit nervous,” he said. “It’s new to me. And the bulls are a little bit bigger and more powerful.” But as history has proven he can ride with the best of them, it’s unlikely he will walk away disappointed. The junior bull riding kicks off on Saturday, followed by the Open bull ride in the evening.

Downtown parade set to attract thousands
Showcase of the region
The Bendigo Bank Mareeba Agricultural Show and Exhibition brings excitement to Mareeba Rodeo over two fun filled days.
To add to the fun and games of carnival, an exhibition of creative works is displayed in a marquee adjacent to the Stud Beef Cattle Show.
With more than $6000 in prize money up for grabs, the event is a showcase of the best in the region. Categories include
available Photography, Needlework, Handcraft, Woodwork, Home Economics, Horticulture, Sugar Cane and Education.
Rodeo fever hits town
BEFORE the rodeo action kicks off this weekend, make sure you head on down to the Mareeba Mazda monster downtown parade, mardi gras and crowning ceremony this Friday night. The parade, held along Byrnes Street, kicks off at 7.45pm
with the crowning of the Queen at the conclusion of the parade on the main stage. Attracting more than 4000 people, the annual parade includes floats by queen entrants, local organisations and businesses, plus horses and more.
All entries in the Agricultural Show are to delivered this Friday between 7:30am and 12noon, with judging from 1.30pm.
Woodchopping competition
MAKE sure you take the time to have a look around Mareeba this week with numerous businesses, day care centres and organisations getting into the rodeo spirit as part of the ‘Western Dress and Window/Foyer Display’ competition. Locals have gone to considerable lengths to decorate in western style all around the town. Pick up next week’s copy of The Express for a full list of results.
Showcasing the skills of axemen, the Woodchops is a traditional drawcard event seen at all agricultural shows and one not to be missed at the Mareeba Rodeo. The woodchop competition is an iconic event acknowledging the rich history of the timber industry. Most of the events being performed evolved from the actual tasks and work-
day skills required of axemen just prior to the appearance of the chain saw. Competitors require strength, a sharp eye, speed and accuracy while using the razorsharp competition axes – don’t miss the excitement of the woodchops at Mareeba Rodeo on Saturday from 11am. Located beside the Agricultural Show Marquee.

Martin Willis and Peter Valentine photographing birds on their expedition.
The wonders of birds
In 2016 local wildlife photographer Martin Willis and fellow Birdlife member Peter Valentine had an expedition to western Queensland. Camping in the bush for many weeks, the target was photography of the unique birds of inland Queensland. The trip included the stony spinifex of Opalton, the vast expanse of Diamantina National Park with its many channels, the red dunes of Birdsville in the far southwest; the extensive plains of Bedourie and Boulia,
the rocky ranges of Mt Isa and the delights of Riversleigh and Boodjamulla National Park. On Thursday July 13, Birdlife Northern Queensland will host a public presentation by Martin and Peter. The talk and photos will cover many different habitats including country where the elusive Night Parrot was found by John Young. There will be grasswrens and fairywrens, parrots and lorikeets, birds of prey and dotterels as well as hon-
eyeaters and finches. The presentation celebrates the wonder and beauty of these inland environments and the wildlife that occur there. The presentation starts at 7.30 pm at the Malanda Hotel. Members of Birdlife Northern Queensland and others interested in birds are invited. There will be an opportunity for questions as part of the presentation. Further Information contact Peter Valentine on 4096 6171.

The LAND
In Debbie’s wake sugarcane farmer and contractor Peter Miotto is preparing for another busy harvest, and one that even a fierce tropical cyclone only two months ago couldn’t prevent. Cyclone Debbie roared across the Queensland coast on March 28, just north of Proserpine at Airlie Beach, and while her ferocity exacted a devastating toll on the state’s agricultural resources, cane growers have carried on. The national crop for the 2017 season was recently estimated at just under 34 million tonnes, although understandably down on last year as a result of cyclone damage and ongoing drought in the southern cane region of Queensland. Peter and wife Judy farm about 200ha just north of Proserpine. They also run a successful contracting business with a Case IH Austoft 8800 harvester, which they purchased 12 months ago in time for the 2016 crush. Last year, Peter says the Austoft cut about 100,000 tonnes of cane – across about 1200ha – but thanks to Debbie, and another big rain event in May, it will be a slightly different story this season. “There’s been a fair bit of damage, a lot of broken cane, snapped cane, that sort of thing,” Peter said. “We’ll be at least 20 per cent down (in this area)
on last year because of the cyclone, and the sugar content will be affected a bit, too.” Peter said for the contracting business, it would be a fairly slow season because of flattened cane and remnants of the cyclone, such as bits of tin and other rubbish, littering paddocks. But he knows he’s got the best equipment for the challenging four-plus months ahead, saying he had used Case IH machinery for the past 30 years – as long as he’s run the contracting business – and kept buying it for some very important reasons. “I like the product, simple as that,” Peter said. “They’re reliable, we’ve never had any big dramas with them.” The Miottos change over their Austoft harvester every three to four years, and also have several Case IH tractors on the property, including a 180 Puma and two 155 Pumas. For a business that goes seven days a week in peak time, reliability is key, but in the case of a harvester it’s also got to be accommodating for the people behind the controls, who work six days out of eight and can be in the machine for up to 12 hours at a time. “They are very comfortable and they need to be when the drivers are sitting in there all day,” Peter said, referring to son Steven and

employee Joel O’Brien. About 180km up the road from the Miottos at Ayr, Malcolm Searle and wife Idoya have just welcomed the contractors onto their two cane farms. The Searles – whose sons Graham and Jeffrey work alongside them, with another son Adrian assisting on a part-time basis also run about 1700 head of Brahman cattle on two
other properties, something that sets them apart from many other producers in the sugar industry. Most of the cattle are sold and processed in Mackay but the Searles also take advantage of Australia’s live export arrangements, sending cattle to Townsville from where they are then shipped to Vietnam. Aside from the cane
SUGAR REPORTS MOSSMAN MILL CRUSHING STATISTICS WEEK 4 Mossman Mill plant availability was below budget for Week 4 but above budgeted throughput. The factory processed 36,826 tonnes of cane at an average crushing rate of 327 tonnes/hour. The major down time during the week was due to boiler repairs, a scheduled maintenance day and wet weather impacted the cane supply late in the week.
they grow and raising cattle, the family also sows just over 12ha of corn a season for livestock feed, and are assisted across this range of on-farm tasks by their small fleet of Case IH tractors. Both families are making final preparations for the 2017 crush, with crushing operations well underway in some regions. Malcolm’s local mill
kicked up its operations earlier this month, while Peter said the mill at Proserpine had a July 4 starting date, with both regions’ crushing seasons delayed due to Cyclone Debbie and the amount of rain that had fallen in May. But, both growers, who are third generation North Queensland cane farmers, know how fickle Mother Nature can be and the im-

RODEO action kicked off last weekend with the start of events as part of the rodeo festival program. Held on Saturday at Kerribee Park was the ‘Vicktor Kazim Memorial Cutting’. The event was held in honour of local horse event enthusiast Vicktor Kazim, who passed away earlier this year. Vicktor was a big part of not only the Mareeba Rodeo, but the local community. The grounds were packed with experienced and novice riders either practicing for this weekend’s big line up of comps, or having a go to improve their skills. Competitors also returned on Sunday for a day of Horse Sports.

Legends to take on Speewah foot race
Sonya Alba-Miller of Mareeba placed second in the 2016 17km trial run.
Celebrating its eighth year and the commencement of an unofficial trail running season is the upcoming Speewah Legend Footrace on Sunday July 16. Traditionally one of the biggest local trail runs judged by participant number, Event Coordinator Shane White is again hoping to see a big crowd of local and visiting trail runners enjoy what he considers to be one of the best courses anywhere in Australia. “There’s three different length events – 4km, 8km and 17km loops – that all travel to and from the Speewah Campground using the scenic tracks and trails of Barron Gorge National Park,” he said. According to White it’s the “dense, shady single track trails, stunning creek crossings and long flowing

downhills” that makes the Speewah run special and keeps runners coming back to have another go at the Footrace. The event is also as well suited to the beginner as it is to the competitive athlete. “Speewah is perfect for those starting out or chasing a taste of trail, but it’s also been exciting over the last few years to watch renowned runners like Jimmy Hilton, Stevo Francis, Susan Crowe and Rachel Effeney push each other to consistently lower the 17k record and put in some unbelievable performances and times given the terrain covered.” All entries are online prior to the event which kicks off at 7.30am. The Mareeba Gladiators Under 10’s junior rugby league team at the Gorden Tallis Cup in Townsville over the school holidays. The boys finished top of their pool and made it all the way to the semi finals.
U10 footy stars of the future FIFTEEN football mad kids just missed out on playing in the grand final of a state-wide under 10’s competition last week in Townsville. The Mareeba Gladiators juniors came third
out of 64 teams across Queensland in the Gorden Tallis Cup held at the Townsville Junior Rugby League grounds. “They did great. I’m very proud,” said coach Raymond Srhoj.
The kids, who all come from Mareeba and Dimbulah, train twice a week at Davies Park. Many of them had never taken part in such a big competition before making them future stars of football.

Atherton cowboy takes out Cairns
By Mandy Magro
Adrenaline dripped from the railings and the roar of the crowd virtually lifted the roof off the Cairns Convention Centre as they cheered on the 22 elite bull riders in Round 1. The chink of spurs, the slam of heartbeats, the silence that reigned supreme as riders held on tight while others were flung high from the belligerent bucking equally elite bulls. Ethan Watts rode Moves Like Jagger and Nathan Burtenshaw rode Seek and Destroy to tie with 83.75 points. The boys from Brazil – Jorge Valdiviezo lucked out, Edmilson Goncalves scored 79 points, Luis Blanco 83 and Robinson Guedes 82.5. FNQ lad, Sam O’Connor was hot on their boot heels with a score of 82.75 points. Round 2 brought the roar of the crowd to earsplitting heights, sending vibrations rocketing through the grandstands.
The leaders, Watts and Burtenshaw had targets on their backs as the other 20 bull riders fought it out tooth and nail. The Brazilians fought hard, Robinson Guedes scoring 83 points, but Jorge Valdiviezo Luis Blanco and Edmilson Goncalves lucked out. Local bull rider Kurt Shepherd gained the lead to the appreciation of the crowd. The championship round found Shepherd, Kleier, Robinson, Williamson, Woodard, Schafferius, Burtenshaw and Watts going head to head in the battle for the title. With none of the 8 riders making the eight seconds Kurt Shephard showed his home crowd exactly how it was done walking out of the arena with the champion buckle after scoring 166.25 points. Next up on the PBR Australia calendar will be the annual Last Cowboy Standing at Brisbane this weekend.

Bulls unlucky again not to walk away with win The Mareeba Bulls have turned on arguably one of their best performances so far, but were left frustrated as another late goal to the Stratford Dolphins stopped the Bulls getting all three points. The Bulls headed into the match knowing they needed anything but a loss. The came out firing and nearly took the lead inside the opening three minutes of play with the ball skimming across the face of the Dolphins goal, but somehow not going in. The away side then got back into the game in a very even opening thirty minutes, but then controversy struck, as the linesman flagged for a Dolphins offside. The ball went through to Bulls keeper Adrian Vedelago who kicked the ball back to take the offside free kick, but the ref waved play on as the ball fell to the Dolphins striker Micahel VanHoren who found himself unmarked from being in the offside positon to open the scoring and give the away side a 1-0 lead at the break. The home side then came out in the second half with a renewed sense of belief dominating play from the first whistle, and

deservedly drew level in the 56th minute with Robert Pendenza heading home after some great lead up play from Jason Haydon. The Bulls continued to press, with Steven Cater putting the Bulls in front in the 76th minute with a fantastic volley. But with just about the Dolphins only chance of the second half, the ever dangerous Joe Rusch drew the homeside level in the 80th minute. Both sides continued to look for the winner, but the draw now opens up the premiership race with Innisfail losing to the Marlin Coast Rangers. The Bulls reserve team have continued their recent run of good form with a comprehensive 2-0 win over the Dolphins, while the ladies fought out a pulsating 5-4 win also on Saturday. On Friday night, the clubs two second division mens sides travelled away with the Bulls Orange side drawing 1-1 with the Marlin Coast Rangers, while the Bulls Black side enjoyed a great 2-1 over the Douglas Dragons. The Bulls now have the weekend off (bye) to enjoy the Mareeba Rodeo festivities.
Winning ways continue
The Gladiators continued their winning streak over the weekend beating Mossman 38-10 on their own turf. The A Grade team played another stellar game of football, leaving them still sitting in second equal place on the CDRL ladder. It’s becoming an exciting time for the Gladiators as they near the end of the season, with hopes high that they will make it into the final. They’re current-
ly two points behind the leaders. While the players were celebrating their win, one team member, Henare Meava was instead being transferred from Mossman Hospital to Cairns Hospital with a badly broken leg. Reserve Grade lost 18 to 28 on Saturday night while the C Grade team won 34 to 18. No games for Mareeba this weekend as the Gladiators have the bye.
Roosters bounce back
Roosters forward Clinton Lilo on Saturday.
Three tries to winger Tony Woodleigh highlighted in the Atherton Roosters 46-30 win over Edmonton Storm at Edmonton’s Petersen Park on Saturday night. The understrength Roosters bounced themselves back into the winners circle and outscored their opposition eight tries to six. After leading 28-10 at the break, the Roosters pushed their lead out to 40-14 midway through
the second session before allowing Storm back into the contest with a couple of late tries. Tony Woodleigh’s third try three minutes from fulltime sealed the points for the Roosters. Fullback Jacob Rivett was again busy crossing for two tries while centre Nigel Woodleigh kicked seven goals. This Saturday the Roosters play Suburbs at Alley Park, Gordonvale.
