Celebration at Malanda Falls Malanda Falls Visitor Centre is celebrating 20 years this weekend – and you’re invited to the party. On Saturday, June 17 from 10am to 2pm there will be official cake cutting, displays by local environmental groups, news and information about the local community and you can test drive the new virtual reality tree kangaroo ‘Kimberley’. The centre opened its doors as the Malanda Environmental Learning Facility in June 1997.
Your chance to take a seat on the throne
Meeting new people, building confidence, growing and learning are just some of the things young girls can get from being in the Mareeba Rodeo and Show Festival Queen competition. Each year a new queen is crowned along with a princess and Miss Popularity. “Once they’re crowned as queen they have to represent our town and our area at different functions throughout the year,” said one of the girls’ matrons Frances Petersen. “It does build their confidence. They do a lot of speaking out in public because we do get invited to a lot of different outings so they do have to speak to the public in front of lots of people. “We have seen that even the most timid girls have opened up. So that is a good factor that this will build up their confidence for later on in life.” Sarah Bensted (pictured), 22, is last
year’s Rodeo Queen. She said that entering the competition was “the best decision” she had made. “Not only do you enjoy the company of other participants, you learn a lot about yourself,” she said of the experience. “The weeks leading up to the competition involved self-deportment lessons, make up tutorials, healthy skin awareness and enjoying the yummy food!” Sarah is studying law at James Cook University. She also works full time as a child care coordinator in Cairns. She said that although giving speeches at the rodeo ball would be the most nervewracking part of the competition, it was also a fun and exciting experience. “I was honoured to be crowned the 2016 Mareeba Rodeo Queen and I was excited for the year to come,” she said, on finding out she had won. “It will be fun to meet this years en-
trants and to mentor them in any way possible!” The competition is open to unmarried females aged 16-25. They are judged on personality, general knowledge, appearance, general conversation skills, deportment, speech and manners. “I love doing it every year. You don’t see a lot of it out in the world these days but because of us living in a small community, it’s really good and it’s a way of getting the community together,” said Mrs Petersen who chaperones the girls through their training in the lead up to the judging day. “It gives the girls a chance to get dressed up and wear beautiful outfits.” Entry is just $25 and closes on June 23. Forms can be downloaded from www.mareebarodeo.com.au or you pick one up from The Express office.

Mareeba Heritage Museum celebrates Queensland Day By Rebecca Wallis On June 6 1859 Queensland separated from the colony of New South Wales to become a state in its own right. Now June 6 is celebrated by Queenslanders as the day when the new colony of Queensland was established. In honour of the Sunshine State, Mareeba’s Heritage Centre opened its doors to the public for free and lit up the building on Saturday evening. A few hundred people were treated to a live band, face painting, a bouncy castle and of course a tour of the mu-
seum’s vast array of artefacts. “History is made on a daily basis and the historical centre is one of these places that records history,” said Mayor Tom Gilmore to a crowd of onloookers. “It is important that we reflect on the history of who we are.” Visitors lined up for a go in the inflatable Planetarium and then sat down to enjoy the band. The museum was buzzing with energy as young and old alike gazed in amazement at the antique items that depicted life from a bygone era.
Tiahna Maloberti and Zoe Hopgood enjoyed the late night tour of the museum.

Minimum wage rate rise
By Rebecca Wallis
From July 1 anyone working for minimum wage will be getting a pay rise – not that everyone is happy about it. The Fair Work Commission (FWC) announced a 3.3% increase to minimum wages last week, meaning the new national minimum wage will be $694.90 per week or $18.29 per hour, up from $17.70 an hour. Jillian Trout, QITE Mareeba’s general manager, said the increase was fair and could encourage more people to
look for work. “It reflects the increases in the cost of living and is helping to meet that, particularly for people on lower incomes,” she said. “I think it will be an added incentive for anyone looking for work as Centrelink payments are not helping with the gap in the disadvantage.” But the news has not been welcomed by all. Small businesses already feeling the pinch will be put under further strain when the new pay rates apply.
Employsure managing director Ed Mallett said he was surprised the increase was so high and said small businesses will struggle to cough up the extra money. “We predicted the increase to be no more than 2.4 per cent and we’re particularly surprised at the decision - 3.3 per cent is the highest we’ve seen in six years,” he said. “Most SMEs won’t be charging customers 3.3 per cent extra from July 1, but will need to come up with an extra $22.30 per week per employee,

paid at the expense of their bottom line.” Mr Mallett also said that the news that Sunday penalty rates would be reduced for some people working in the hospitality and retail sectors was a “double punch”. Ms Trout agreed saying the increase in minimum wage rates could put small business owners off employing more staff. “This can be a strain on smaller businesses and will have the employer reflect if they do need to employ more
staff and they will need to re look at budgets for the coming year,” she said. “I do believe employers need to utilise and use every incentive they can if they do want to employ staff and there are currently some very good incentives with the Federal and State Govt to employ extra staff with incentives up to $20,000.” Small business owners looking for help in this area can call Employsure’s local representative Rob Scott on 0400 927089.

Leading the way in sustainable farming By Rebecca Wallis Mareeba’s Skybury is known locally and nationally for its outstanding coffee – but its also starting to gain a reputation for its sustainable farming practices too. Through a series of podcasts and microdocumentaries produced by Northern Golf Resource Management Group (NGRMG) the coffee and paw paw producer has shared its experiences, learnings and insights on its journey to sustainability. The idea is that it will help guide other farmers on their journey to becoming more sustainable. “It’s always been a conscious thing on our mind that if we don’t look after the land then it won’t look after you,” said Mark MacLaughlin who is part of the family business at Skybury. “Rape and pillage, rape and pillage – that only lasts for so long.” Mark is the Plant Health Manager at Skybury and says he was almost forced into developing a more sustainable way of farming due to the sandy soil they inherited at their Ivicevic Road property. Previously used for tobacco plants, the ground was left depleted of nutrition. “What we have been doing for the last 10 or 15 years is building up the health of our soil because healthy soils provide a healthy plant which is a naturally pest and disease resistant plant,” explained Mr MacLaughlin. “So that’s the one thing we can boast - we’ve improved the carbon content of our soils ten times what they used to be when we started. “We have steadily been trying to build them back up and a lot of the practices we do, just in terms of crop rotation, allows for a lot of that carbon build up.” Mark and his father
travel internationally to learn more about how others globally are farming. He says its a great way to pick up ideas to implement back home. “If you’re not getting better you will get left behind and that’s probably the biggest misconception about the farming industry in general,” he said. “Is that there’s a guy out there with a straw hat chewing on grass but really farming is so cutting edge these days that if you’re not leading it or taking innovative steps year after year then you’ll just get left behind.” Mark has been instrumental in developing the business and implementing ideas that others may have thought were too abstract. But with rainfall in the past three years at an all time low, it has been his ability to think outside the box that has kept their crop productivity thriving. “I think water is on everyone’s agenda at the moment,” said Mr MacLaughlin. “In the last couple of months I’ve seen guys boring for water or they might be building temporary dams so they can catch more natural run off but at the end of the day its your own irrigation events that are going to be the most reliable and consistent. “That’s what we’ve focussed on, not just damning up every gully in the area but just finding where are man-made water losses and can we harness some of that? especially if it’s nutrient rich.” It’s his thoughts and ideas on irrigation that are the focus of the video that has been created by NGRMG. He hopes other farmers might pick up some ideas from it. “Farming is not a secret between what you’re doing vs your neighbours,” he said. “But some things you will keep pretty close to your chest because that can mean the difference

between a good crop and a really great crop. But if it’s beneficial to everyone especially if it’s not a direct feeding line to you then you’ll definitely pass on good ideas and share information.” The team at Skybury have also been implementing some new ideas on mapping the land prior to planting, with pleasing results. “One of the big things we do constantly is pulling down one block and re-doing it, whether its for rotation or because paw paws have a very short lifespan,” he said. “So Northern Golf (NGRMG) came and we mapped out every metre of the farm and put in very accurate graphical elevation points so we could see when we come to set up a block from an old system to a new system we could use all of their points and really fine tune the gradient and the fall of each block.”

Ladies tackle 5,000km Bicentennial bike trail TWO bike riding enthusiasts are attempting the daunting task of bike riding from Cooktown to Melbourne along the Bicentennial National Trail. Previously known as the National Horse Trail, the track is one of the longest multi-use, nonmotorised, self-reliant trails in the world stretching 5,330km from Cooktown to Healesville 60km north east of Melbourne. Lesley Haine and Sue Cummings are spending six weeks biking as much of the track as they can. “The National Horse Trail first came about as an idea of RM Williams and
in the early 70s,” said Sue. Australia Horse Congress had a meeting at what was QLD Agricultural college at Gatton, that’s now the University of Queensland and at that gathering formed the Australian Horse Trail rider association – ATHRA –and also that was the beginning of the National Horse Trail. “Dan Seymour was in attendance and he had agreed with RM that he would give it a go, so he trucked his horses down to Melbourne and made his way north with the help of local property owners and pony clubs.
“Dan completed a Tom Quilty on his way. Then in the bicentennial year the Bicentennial Authority came about and we were given a grant and we had to move away from horses and that’s when it became the bicentennial national trail and essentially it’s a self-reliant trail.” The trail runs the length of the Great Dividing Range through national parks, private property and alongside wilderness areas. Originally intended for horses, the track is now used by cyclists and walkers as well.
Kewarra Aged Care will provide quality care and offer permanent residential accommodation, dementia specific services, respite and concessional places.

Firefighters pedal for charity
WELCOME: Senior Constable Nagy, Senior Constable Sly, Yvonne Canendo, Acting Commissioner Taylor, Senior Constable Grace and Sgt Scanlen.
Malanda police station gets two new officers TWO new officers were welcomed to the Malanda Police district last week to expand the team and create a larger police presence in the area. Senior Constables Joel Nagy and Phillip Sly were both welcomed by a host dignitaries many of whom had worked hard to get them there. Officer in charge of Malanda Sergeant Darren Scanlen said Malanda Police are there to serve the local community and be a part of it. “It’s important for us, as your local officers, to work in partnership with local community groups, schools and govern-
ment organisations in order to resolve any issues that the community may raise and in doing so ensuring the community’s safety is at the forefront and crime is at the minimum,” he said. Senior constable Joel Nagy has been a police officer for more than 13 years and has spent the last 11 years working on the Tablelands. Senior constable Phillip Sly spent 12 years working in the Ipswich District. Joel and Phillip both have wives who are police officers in the Tablelands Patrol Group. Both officers were officially welcomed on Queensland Day, June 6.
The emergency services contingent of Mareeba was briefly expanded over the weekend when 37 fire fighters, police and paramedics stopped over as part of a 560km bike ride. The men and women came together from all over Queensland to spend six days riding from Townsville to Cairns to raise money for burns victims. Now in its 11th year ‘Bike4Burns’ has raised over
$500,000 for the Children's Hospital Foundation in Brisbane. Tim Benstead (left) a firefighter from Brisbane and Tony McGregor (right) a retired firefighter from Brisbane were just two of the bikers who rode into Mareeba on Sunday afternoon with Ken Evernden (centre) from the Gold Coast as part of the support crew.

Legendary Roosters fan Kath Standen passes away By Rebecca Wallis It’s a sad week for the Atherton community and particularly those involved with the rugby league club as well known local identity and football fan Kath ‘Stando’ Standen will be laid to rest on Friday. The 86 year old was one of the Roosters’ ‘truest’ supporters and rarely missed a game in 70 years. “It was in her heart her whole life,” her daughter Tricia English told The Express on Friday. “She just adored football. She was obsessed.” The Roosters lifetime member died of pneumonia on June 3 after breaking her arm lead to complications. On Saturday a minute’s silence was held in her honour at the Roosters vs Gladiators game in Atherton and this Friday a hearse will take her around the oval after a service at St Josephs, followed by a wake at the football grounds. It’s a fitting tribute to a woman who gave so much to the local community. “She was a very giving per-
son. Never a taker,” explained Tricia of her mother. “She never had a lot of money. But if someone was sick or in trouble she was the first one there to offer a hand. It was ‘I’ll do your washing, I’ll do your cooking. Don’t you worry.’ “Until a couple of weeks before she died she was up at Carinya taking pikelets to people that she knew. If anyone was sick it was ‘I’m not here to hold your hand’ - it was always to do something for someone. She was the most giving lady. We were so lucky to have her as our mother and in our life.” Kath lead a hard life due to the death of her husband Lennie when he was just 30 years old. Since then she raised three children alone - Tricia, Rhonda and ‘Pop’ - and worked hard to keep them fed and happy. “Dad got electrocuted in Mareeba,” said Tricia. “They had a problem with the outage and they sent him up the pole and he slipped and he fell onto the power lines and they hadn’t turned the power off and it killed him.
PAGE 8 The Express, Wednesday, June 14, 2017
“So Mum raised us alone – there was no one else in her life but dad. She just had to clean houses and pick potatoes and whatever to keep going. So she’s had a very tough life.” Kath had left Sydney when she was 17 to move to the Tablelands because her aunt Molly was here. Always a blues supporter, she also fell in love with the Roosters and has been a hard core fan ever since. It was a passion she loved to share with her nephew who also passed away prematurely just before his 18th birthday in 1990. “When he died she was my biggest supporter,” said Tricia. “He had a heart deformity and died just before his 18th birthday. Him and her used to go to football. They were best mates. He was a big Atherton supporter as well. Him and her were best friends. She’s a good, good soul and she deserves the best wherever she is. Everyone that knew her knew she was special.” Fit, healthy and active right up until her accident, Kath was a keen member of the
Tolga craft club and a local gardening group. She had a regular ironing customer. “Just everything gave up and it was her time to go,” said Tricia of her sudden death. “She said to me ‘I’ve just had enough’ and I said ‘but you’re gonna keep fighting?’ and she said ‘yeh yeh’ but I think that was just for my sake really.” Kath died in Cairns Private Hospital after being transferred from Atherton Hospital. Tricia was full of praise for the staff there. “Atherton Hospital – from the staff to the domestic to the nurses – they looked after her 24/7 and they treated her with the utmost respect,” said Tricia. “That hospital is unbelievable. When I had no one there, they were with me, consoling me 24/7 and the Cairns Private Hospital was just as good. They did exactly the same. They were brilliant.” Kath’s funeral will be held on Friday, June 16 at 11am at St Joseph’s Catholic Church, Atherton followed by a wake at the Rotunda at the Atherton Roosters Stadium.
Kath Standen was a proud Roosters fan and went out of her way to help others in the community.

Water allocation slashed for Mareeba-Dimbulah SUNWATER released its irrigator water predictions last week with many supply schemes expected to remain at a similar percentage to last year – except for those in the Mareeba and Dimbulah areas feeding off Tinaroo Dam. SunWater executive general manager operations Colin Bendall said storage inflows from ex-tropical cyclone Debbie and some late wet season rainfall provided a welcome boost to some of the State’s central region dams, however some schemes will still feel the pinch of consecutive failed wet seasons. “Unfortunately, Tinaroo Falls
Dam has missed out on significant inflows this wet season and this is expected to have an impact on the amount of water available to irrigators in the coming year,” he said. “Based on the current level of Tinaroo Falls Dam, the announced allocation for customers in the Mareeba-Dimbulah scheme could be down from 70 per cent in 2016-17 to around 50-60 per cent in 2017-18. “In schemes affected by lower announced allocations, we will be working with our customers to minimise losses and be as flexible as we can with rostering and delivery to maximise available water.”
SunWater announces a percentage of water allocation for customers in each of its water supply schemes across Queensland at the start of the water year on July 1. The announced allocation indicates the maximum volume of water available to customers in the water year and is calculated based on the amount of water in the storage as well as variable factors such as predicted evaporation, seepage and use. The Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting less rainfall and higher than normal temperatures during winter and spring, which could limit any increases in the allocations.
Sign post removed at Heritage Centre The old timber posts synonymous with Mareeba’s Heritage Centre were pulled out last week thanks to a nasty case of white ants. The posts have been there since the building was first built but had to go after pest controllers deemed them dangerous. “The pest controller came in to do the inspection across the entire Heritage Centre,” said Mareeba Shire Council CEO Peter Franks. “They had a look at those poles and they discovered they’d been really badly eaten by white ants. The recommendation was that it was structurally unsound and dangerous and that it should come down.” The council will now discuss with the Heritage Centre committee about replacing the poles, or putting the signs elsewhere.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
editorial@theexpressnewspaper.com.au
Factual response to letter I refer to an article in a recent Murdock newspaper on Friday May 26, 2017. A letter to the paper’s editor, from Tolga’s Peter Campion in regards to KUR-World. I expect this is as a response to a concerned letter written two weeks ago by M Zehntner from Kuranda. This letter deserves a factual response from people who live here in Kuranda. Campion’s letter demonstrates that his worldly knowledge on the subject is derived only from KUR-World’s marketing website. It could be suggested that such information is limited and one sided. KUR-World suggests that they are going to develop this land as a world class eco development. Campion may need to research the meaning of ‘eco’. Just because the developer uses the word ‘eco’, it does not mean everything will be OK. To date there have been illegal construction works which without community intervention, could have resulted in significant environmental disaster. These continue to impact on the properties of long term local residents and the local environmental ecosystems. And these problems have come well before the project is approved.
The Express reserves the right to edit letters
Yes, KUR-World does own the land and yes, they have the right to develop it. However, they also must respect the current legislation and the rights of adjoining neighbours and community. This developer needs to be kept within the boundaries allowed by the legislation. Campion’s comments regarding busybodies and activists is an insult to those responsible people in our community who acted in a voluntary capacity for the well-being of all. If such damage was to happen at Campion’s back door, I wonder what hot air he would be blowing off. Campion lives in Tolga, well away from any effect from KUR-World to his land. This writer is not against development. The Kuranda region deserves quality development which aligns with current legislation. Katie Ward, KURANDA

Yes Minister alive and well in State Govt In response to the story ‘Hospital fears allayed’, in The Express, Wednesday June 7, the Queensland Health Department is bedevilled with layers of bureaucracy consisting of managers who manage managers who then manage other managers without tangible results. In correspondence I have received from the Health Department and the Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service, I am frustrated to find there is a distinct lack of ability within the bureaucracy to control the direction of Mareeba Hospital. The new chairman of the CHHHB, Mr Clive Skarott says there will be no reduction in any services, but acknowledging that “we don’t know what is going to be happening with the funding”. Too late that has already happened. The cost of a top heavy administration to health and hospital services is enormous, with staff on salaries they could not earn in the private sector. Some correspondence I have received has led me to believe ‘Yes Minister’ is alive and well in the Queensland Government. I have had letters from the Director of Communications and Engagement, Office of the Chief Executive; the Executive Support Officer, Medical Superintendent and Medical Superintendent Hinterland HUB, Mareeba Hospital, Division 4 Rural and Health Support Services; A/Board Secretary, Office of the Chief Executive and Senior Correspondence and Liaison Officer, Communications, Officer of the Chief Executive. The Health Minister Cameron Dick is arguing about the $2.1 million of lost COAG funding, that he signed off, but would have known what would happen to the hospital as a consequence. He is blaming the Federal Government for a lack of funding, when he was responsible for losing it. If he signed off to remove 15 or 20 duplicated managerial positions there might be enough left in the kitty to cover the lost funds and keep the hospital going and reinstate it to its former position as a top class facility suitable for all residents. Ross Cardillo, Mareeba
Give credit where credit is due I was bought up to be truthful and give credit where credit is due. After reading Ray Byrne’s Letter to the Editor in The Express June 7 2017, I felt a response to set the record straight was necessary. Our MP for the seat of Dalrymple Shane Knuth has been connecting with communities at grass roots level for the past 13 years since 2004 when he was first elected to the former seat of Tablelands. Maybe Ray Byrnes chooses to ignore the facts, or maybe he’s forgotten the many positive outcomes achieved by the Honourable MP Shane Knuth. To help jog Ray’s memory, I’ve listed some of Shane’s achievements which have benefited regional communities throughout the vast area of Dalrymple. Between $60-$90 million redevelopment of Atherton Hospital; $77 million upgrade for Gregory Development Road and Cape River Bridge; $10 million upgrade for Upper Barron Road; $4.5 million for a new Health Clinic at Dimbulah; $3 million upgrade for Palmerston Highway; $3 million for Ravenshoe Dairy; $2.3 million for Atherton State High School Special Education Unit; $1 million upgrade for Rocky Creek Memorial intersection; Upgrades to water infrastructure at Millstream; Extra funding for Tablelands Regional Council to control Navua Sedge; Upgrade to Millaa Millaa QPS building; Additional two QPS officers at Malanda; New fire stations for Dimbulah and Herberton; Permits to restock redclaw at Lake Tinaroo; Reinstatement of lawn mowing voucher trial on the Tablelands; Reduction in fees for small timber millers; Reinstatement of Mareeba Airport project update; Tabled and passed Real Choice in Marketing Bill for cane growers; Tabled Fair Milk Price Logos Bill; Tabled Safer Waterways Bill to control crocodiles; Funding and building plans for domestic violence shelter in Charters Towers; Helped secure grant for safer amenities block for Charters Towers Netball Association; Funding to upgrade airconditioning in Moranbah schools; Overturning the forced land grab near Charters Towers for military training; etc. I could keep adding to the list - but here’s only so much room allotted for letters to the Editor in the paper. Shane’s track record speaks volumes, and no matter which seat Shane chooses to represent in the next State election, the word out there is that mobs of grateful residents and community groups will vote for Shane Knuth again – he gets the job done. CHARLIE’S BROMELIAD SALE! For the green thumb in your family! Bromeliads, namely Ananus comosus were discovered by Christopher Columbus on the Island of Guadeloupe in the late 15th century in the West Indies; almost all Bromeliads are native to South America. All bromeliads are composed of a spiral arrangement of leaves which come in all the colours of the rainbow. Different Species of bromeliads require different amounts of light, water and humidity. All bromeliads share a common characteristic: tiny scales on their leaves. These scales serve as a very efficient absorption system especially when found in desert regions where the air is hot and dry and the sun beats down relentlessly. The scales also help the plant to
Looking after your bromeliads
reduce water loss and shield the plants from the solar radiation. A great tip for home gardeners is that bromeliads are best grown in a porous, slightly acid to neutral PH mixture that most often contains a substantial proportion of fine Pine Bark. That also provides the stability to support the plant or pup that you
are potting and does not become too compact throughout its life. This is often supplemented with a variety of ingredients, namely coarse sand, peat moss, Vermiculite, Perlite, charcoal, coconut fibre or husks. When choosing a position for your new bromeliads select one that has bright, diffused light as this will enhance their colouration and ultimate beauty.
Bromeliads should be watered until the cup overflows; this should be done when it becomes touch dry. Keep the central cup filled with water during the hotter months but less important in the colder months as with over watering it may become stagnant and this can cause the plant to rot. The roots of most potted bromeliads should be kept moist, but never allow them to become soggy. Plants in the garden will require regular watering in the summer months but less in winter. Mounted plants need more frequent watering and can be submerged for short periods of time to ensure they are well watered. Once your bromeliad flowers, pups will shoot up from the base of the mother plant. Don’t remove pups unless they are at least 1/3 the size of the plant they are growing from.
If you would like to remove the pups use a pair of garden scissors or a sharp set of secateurs, making sure you get the complete base of the pup. Stolons can be removed before potting but can be useful to secure the plant when mounting. Pups are often left to callous before planting and will usually take one to three years to mature. Bromeliads feed though their leaves. Liquid fertilisers are usually best and can be diluted between ¼ and ½ the recommended strength before application. Slow release fertiliser can be added to the mix although fertilisers high in urea should not be used in the cooler months. Best colours are achieved in very good light and minimum fertiliser as leaves become smaller and tighter colouration greatly improves.
Thick leaved plants will generally tolerate the most direct sunlight but softer varieties will not so keep them in shade or partly shaded areas in your garden. Ask Charlie for more information on what’s best for your Bromeliad this weekend at the huge 3 day sale, 210 McGrath Road, Mareeba.

Basketball heats up with Semi finals week
EXCITED: Oliver May, Seth Stein, Dalton Butler, Jhai Mehmet, Shorty MacDonald and Max Williams are all on their way to Brisbane for the Pensinsular School Sports.
Junior hockey stars represent Six Atherton junior hockey players have been chosen to compete at Peninsular School Sports representing their region in Brisbane this week. The juniors all aged between 10 and 12 competed in the regional heats in Cairns last month before finding out they had been selected. “Normally only one or two play-
ers would be picked so it’s amazing that six of them were chosen,” said Maria MacDonald whose daughter Talitha ‘Shorty’ MacDonald was the only female player picked. “It’s an awesome effort by all of them, coming from the same club. The association here are doing an amazing job.”
www.theexpressnewspaper.com.au
The players are all members of the Atherton Hockey Association. If successful in Brisbane they could be chosen to represent the State at the nationals later in the year. Peninsular School Sports runs from 15-18 June at the State Hockey Centre in Brisbane.
The Mareeba Basketball ‘Winter Season Championship’ semi-finals in both senior and junior divisions, will be decided this week. With the successful semi-finalists qualifying for next week’s grand finals, some closely contested encounters should eventuate during the various semi-final matches. In particular the Thursday’s men’s and junior semis could well develop into real cliff hangers, as the contesting teams appear so evenly matched. The semi-finals series commenced on Tuesday night with the senior ladies sides endeavouring to gain a place in next week’s championship decider. Tremendous interest centred on the vital concluding fixture round of the senior mens comp last week. As a number of sides were still in the hunt for a place in the semis. The important clash between Blue Angels and Red Devils, saw the Red Devils combinaton commence extremely well. Holding a handy 23 to 18 half time
lead over Blue Angels, due mainly to the excellent play of Juni Bordeos, together with the young Osborne twins Layton and Brandon. But Blue Angels took control from the start of the third quarter, to register a fine 60 to 49 victory over the Red Devils. Jeremy Mackay was in superb form for the winners. His 28 points were a mixture of scoring with long bombs and drives to the basket. While Tyson Tatti contributed strongly during the second stanza for the Blue Angel side. The win clinched a semi-final spot and proved a disapointment for Ciggy Butts, who convincingly defeated the Killer Bees during the round, only to have their semi-final dream end by a Blue Angels victory. Stingrays defeated a slightly unlucky Barras side by 40 to 33 in the other mens fixture. A good effort by Stingrays to finish off the winter season at the top of the mens competition.

Coffey wins third Mareeba Open Bull ride spectacular Cairns tennis coach Ryan Coffey came out on top at the Bendigo Bank Mareeba Open for the third year in a row. Coffey defeated his opponent Ryusuke Ikeda 6-4, 6-0 in two sets on Sunday on the final day of the competition and said he had to dig deep to come out on top. “He had an easy serving at 4-all and so it was tough for me to dig myself out of it," he said. "He had all the momentum. He was ripping all his ground strokes. Mine were very defensive.” But Coffey said he came back stronger in the second set to win the match. “I carried the momentum through and his first service game he had a little lapse,” he said. “A couple of times in that second set he started to fight back a little but I didn't want to let him have any sniff, because he is going to fight and if I let him in the door a little it is going to be a problem.” On Saturday Leacy Argent defeated Jordyn Lizon 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the Women's Open to become a first time winner of the Mareeba Open.

The NRCA current Australian champion, current No.1 PBR bull rider and ABCRA bull riding champion will be vying for the chance to walk away with the winnings. Sponsored by Great Northern beer, local bull riders will also be competing as organisers give them the opportunity to stand shoulder to shoulder with the best in the country. “Not only do you have all the good bull fighters and bull riders coming, we are taking a small amount of local cowboys and trying to make them better cowboys,” said event promoter Peter Brown from NQ Rodeo Entertainment. “And we are trying to invest in our young bull riders. To try and make them better bull riders for the first time we've got junior bull riding on the night as well.” Billed as a family event, there will also be a bar and live music that will be playing until midnight. Townsville's Russ Stone, Nathan brown from Mt Isa and one of the best bull fighters in the country Dalton Poole from Ipswich will be taking on the job of being the evening's bull fighters

not only be there for the riders' safety but will no doubt provide some light entertainment between rides. The series will have events in towns all over the Far North culminating in a final in Cairns in October. Mareeba's A Touch of Country is a major sponsor. “They thought it was a great event and they wanted to be a part of it so we made them a series partner,” said Mr Brown of the Mareeba store. “It's good to see that locals are getting behind it. They'll have their shop there on the night.” Instead of using the Kerribee Park bucking chutes, this event will be bringing the action closer to the crowd with portable chutes that will make having a drink at the bar or getting something to eat easier without missing any of the action. “Don't be late so you don't miss out on a good spot,” said Mr Brown. "There is plenty of seating there. But if you want a good spot where you can see the blood but not get some on you, then you need to be early." Tickets cost $20 but kids, pensioners and students are free. Find NQ Rodeo Entertainment on Facebook for more information.

Gators take cup honours The Mareeba Gladiators have won the Tableland Cup after defeating the Atherton Roosters 30-18 in perfect conditions at Roosters Stadium on Saturday night. Prior to the game, Atherton paid tribute to Mrs Kath Standen who passed away recently and had attended almost every Atherton Roosters match for the past 50 years. The local derby was a spiteful affair with multiple sin bins, one send off, but had a high level of ball skills. Mareeba dominated the first half with the first three tries being carbon copies of one another. After 30 minutes it was 24-0 to Mareeba with Gladiators centre Joseph Burchell having a hattrick to his name.
Fullback Jacob Rivett went over for Atherton in the 36th minute to send the Roosters to the break with hope, down 24-6. After the break the Roosters put on a great defensive performance and backed it with tries to Adam Molloy and Nigel Woodleigh closing the gap to 24-18. Atherton were broken however when the Gladiators scored yet again from a midfield lapse and put the match out of reach at 30-18. The reserve grade match was also a thriller with the Gladiators escaping 18-16 winners over the Roosters. This Sunday the Roosters play Ivanhoes at Smithfield, while the Gladiators travel to Innisfail on Saturday night.
Bulls miss league top spot chance at home

The Mareeba Bulls have missed the opportunity to go top of the FNQ Premier League with a frustrating 3-2 loss at home to the Leichhardt Lions on Saturday night. With league leaders Stratford losing 2-0 at home to Marlin Coast, the Bulls would have went clear top of the ladder with the three points, but instead now sit second and could even drop to fourth, depending on other match results over the weekend – a sign of how tight the league is in 2017. The Bulls went into the match missing regular striker Steven Cater and defenders Ben Stabile and Zane Singelton and it showed. The home side was not able to really click going forward and out of structure defending, not winning enough battles and despite dominat-
ing possession failed to really break down the resolute Lions. “I think we showed them to much respect, we did not win enough of the battles and so we never really clicked,” coach Alex Srhoj said. The Lions hit the front early in the match with an unmarked header on the six yard line. The Bulls then dominated much of the first half, but went into the break 1-0 down. In the second period the Lions came out again firing and took a 2-0 lead with a mixup at the back allowing the lions to go two clear. Robert Pendenza then got one back for the Bulls before the Lions scored their third in the 90th minute. The Bulls then scored again to make it 3-2 with a Paul Ruiz goal in injury time.
The Bulls reserves team won 3-1 in a good performance with Damian Wildman, John Ghensi and Jamie Wilesmith all scoring, while Bulls ladies side went down 4-0. On Friday night the action was warmer then the cold temperatures, with the 2nd division Black side fighting out a 1-1 draw with the Atherton Eagles. The Eagles went ahead in the opening two minutes, while the Bulls had to wait until the 90th minute with new player coach Dennis Allen scoring to draw the match. The mens 2nd division Orange side enjoyed a easy 5-2 win over Stratford to remain second on the ladder. The Bulls are at home again this Saturday against Innisfail in all three grades, plus an under 15’s match on field 2 at 3pm
