Mareeba Hospital’s Medical Superintendant Dr Tjaart Grobbelaar calls meeting to set the record straight By Rebecca Wallis Several issues raised in the ‘Save Mareeba Hospital’ petition and May meeting were called into contention last week when Medical Superintendent Tjaart Grobbelaar held a meeting to set the record straight. Speaking at a Chamber of Commerce luncheon on Wednesday, June 14 at Mareeba RSL, Dr Grobbelaar said that the level of care and services at Mareeba Hospital was at an all-time high and that very few services had been removed while many
more had been added over the past five years. “I think we have probably not kept the community well informed as to what was happening in the hospital and I think the fact that there was a lot of ignorance and a lot of fear about what was happening triggered that response,” he said of the May 2 meeting which over 1000 concerned residents attended. Dr Grobbelaar went on to site instances where the hospital in the early 2000s was in dire straits, with a high proportion of locum doctors, resignations, low staff mo-
rale, a non-existent surgical theatre, high instances of patient relocation to Cairns and multiple coronary enquiries. But in the past five years many changes have been made to improve the hospital with more plans in place to help the hospital go from strength to strength. “In 2013 we got permission to increase our staffing to nine senior doctors, eight juniors and two interns,” said Dr Grobbelaar. “That’s a big difference from the three seniors and one junior we had in 2010.” CONTINUED P3

Plan for new healing centre
A “one stop shop” for support services will soon be available in Cooktown with the Gungarde Community Centre Aboriginal Corporation planning to build a new healing centre on land donated by Cook Shire Council. The healing centre would be owned and managed by Gungarde, but work in partnership with all community support services, Gungarde Chief Executive Officer Greg Whittaker said. “The centre would be available as a kind of drop in facility during the day, with staff able to discuss issues with people and link them with other support services such as the Cooktown District Community Centre, Gungarde, Commu-
nity Health or Cape York Family Centre,” Gungarde Women’s Group Coordinator Oriel Murray, an experienced family therapy and substance abuse counsellor, would be based at the centre along with a project coordinator. “Healing centres are recognised internationally for their effectiveness in addressing intergenerational trauma, improving wellbeing and reducing rates of suicide, incarceration, domestic and family violence and drug and substance abuse,” Mr Whittaker said. Cook Shire Mayor Peter Scott said the project had been given conceptual support by his fellow councillors.

Hospital is better than ever FROM P1
Four years ago the hospital also recruited two general anaesthetists, meaning small surgeries could be performed there for the first in a long time, saving many patients the trouble of transferring to Cairns. The operating theatre went from not being used at all, to being operational 24
treatment, but since then there have been far less root cause analysis investigations and coronial inquiries.” The hospital has also introduced telehealth services which means patients in Mareeba can speak to a specialist remotely via video link. Something Dr Grobbelaar says is the way of the future.

hours a day, seven days a week. “Then we started to get more compliments from the community, less complaints, we started keeping patients in Mareeba hospital where they previously were shipped down to Cairns,” said Dr Grobbelaar. “Previously – the locums didn’t want to take responsibility of sick patients so they sent them down to Cairns for further
“This was something that was lacking in the hospital that we didn’t have specialist input,” he said. “The telehealth ward rounds have changed that. This has prevented a lot of patients having to go down to Cairns for treatment and I think it has really created a safety net for our patients.” He hopes that eventually Mareeba will be the ‘hub’ of a regional telehealth system.
Dr Grobbelaar said that in the short-term future he and his colleagues are working on expanding the theatre capacity and implementing a pathology service. Long term goals are to introduce a chemotherapy unit and dialysis ward. Addressing rumours that beds at the hospital had been reduced over the years, Dr Grobelaar told The Express outside of the meeting that the beds were still there, they just weren’t needed. “They (Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service) saw Mareeba’s bed occupancy was at 70 per cent so they said we’re going to fund you for 75 per cent of available beds. If you need more beds then you can flex up,” he said. “People need to realise the model of care has changed. We try and keep people in their home as much as possible.” Having worked in the town for seven years, Dr Grobbelaar said he was ‘passionate’ about Mareeba Hospital and that although he understood the commu-

nity’s concerns, he felt the negative rumours started when it was claimed Atherton would be raised from a level 3 to a level 4 hospital. “In that time there was the rumour that Mareeba was going to be downgraded. And when we didn’t
pass the accreditation with our sterilisation unit and sterilisation was taken over by Atherton there was a lot of angst that services were being cut and I think there might have been some scaremongering from some of the staff as well,
“But I understand we need to look out for our hospital and we need to protect it. “I am very passionate about Mareeba hospital. I have worked here for seven years and I saw it when it was really floundering and
now it is really robust and we have good systems going in the hospital. “I really don’t want this to fall down again. So we will work very hard towards maintaining what we have at the hospital and improving.”

Honoured with Queen’s medals HONOURED: Ex Tablelands Regional Councillor Shaaron Linwood and current CEO of Mareeba Shire Council Peter Franks.
Two prominent Tabelands figures were last week honoured during the Queen’s Birthday Celebrations. Ex-Tablelands Regional Councillor Shaaron Linwood and Mareeba Shire Council CEO Peter Franks were adorned with an Order of Australia Medal and a Public Service Medal respectively on the roll call announced on Mrs Linwood, who lives in Herberton, spent 16 years as a councillor repre-
senting the Herberton region before she retired. She was also a past president of the Ravenshoe and District Chamber of Commerce and was chair of the Ravenshoe Recovery Committee after the café fire. Her medal was ordered for ‘service to local government and to the community of the Atherton Tablelands’. “Shaaron always had time for everyone, was always prepared to accept
phone calls from everyone and worked tirelessly for the general good of this area,” said one of her supporters Ro Mountney. “A tireless worker even in retirement, still being involved with Lions and RSL to name just a couple of lucky organisations to have access to her skills, Shaaron is still giving her all. She is still involved in many organisations outside the Ravenshoe area.” Mr Franks, who lives
in Kuranda, was honoured with his medal for ‘outstanding public service to local government in Queensland’. His career has been extensively filled with re-shaping local government organisations. He has been the leader of change in a number of councils throughout Australia, particularly Delatite Shire Council in Victoria, Livingstone Shire Council in Queensland, Mack-
ay Regional Council in Queensland, Noosa Shire Council in Queensland and Mareeba Shire Council. By way of example, the Queensland Treasury Corporation’s projected financial outlook for Mareeba Shire Council prior to De-amalgamation was ‘very weak with a negative outlook’, after 18 months of operations they changed the Council’s rating to ‘moderate with neutral outlook.’

In 2006 under the guidance of the then medical superintendent Patrick O’Neill, Mareeba Hospital was able to secure Council of Australian Governments (COAG) Section 19(2) Exemptions Initiative, which allowed the hospital to operate a GP clinic – except that it never should have. The funding is based on the size of the town the hospital supports and in 2006 Mareeba already exceeded capacity – but Dr O’Neill found a loop hole and the hospital reaped the benefits for the past 10 years until last year notice was served that the funding would be removed at the end of September this year. Medical Superintendent at Mareeba Hospital Dr Tjaart Grobelaar said last week that the news was not unexpected and that he had been “waiting for the letter for the last three years.” This funding is what allows Mareeba Hospital to operate a GP clinic. But last week Northern Queensland Primary Health Network (NQPHN) confirmed it would be moving forward with the idea of a new privatelyoperated General Practice co-located at the hospital which would provide bulk
billing and extended after hours services. “I’d like to reassure Mareeba residents that whoever would be chosen to run a possible new GP service at the hospital would be required bulk billing and after hours services,” said NQPHN Chief Executive Officer Robin Moore. “This option would therefore not only address the COAG situation, but also provide a positive outcome to other community questions regarding bulk billing and after hours services. “Another positive for the local community is that the hospital location would be perfect for referrals if necessary. “NQPHN has left no stone unturned to find the right potential option for Mareeba. “We have undertaken extensive research to come up with the best option for local residents, including studying other GP colocated services across the nation. “In fact, we are aware of eight rural GP services in Australia currently colocated within a hospital, and will be working closely with those existing services in sourcing information
and advice to create a business plan for Mareeba. “We will continue to work closely with local healthcare providers, the local community, other key stakeholders, and Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service to ensure that Mareeba has primary care service options to meet the needs of its residents.” Front and centre of the fight to improve Mareeba’s health care options is Ross Cardillo who last week said the meeting with NQPHN went very well. “Now that we have had some open communication and commitment to regular contact, we are feeling very positive about the future of GP services,” he said. “We now have a realistic option with which to move forward to enhance and improve health services in Mareeba. “There is a track history of it working in lots of other areas, and I’m confident we could make it work in Mareeba too.” Mareeba Chamber of Commerce president Joe Moro said the meeting was good news for locals, “I’m very hopeful we can get the outcome for our community,” he said,

Hand in your firearms By Rebecca Wallis
The first national gun amnesty since the Port Arthur massacre will start on July 1 – a move that is alledgedy in response to the increased threat of terrorism in the country. Although state-wide amnesties have been held in recent years, this one aims to get some of the 260,000 unregistered guns off the streets Australia-wide. Cliff Bertoldo is one of Far North Queensland’s biggest firearms dealers. His business on Venture Road, Mareeba, will be an official drop off point for anyone who wants to get rid of an unregistered gun ‘no questions asked’. “They’ll come in and fill out a form and if they’re licensed for that firearm they can walk straight out the door no questions asked. If not it’s got to stay in the vault,” said Mr Bertoldo. “You get estates where

A smaller percentage are hunters and farmers. The last time an amnesty was held 22,000 guns were handed in. “They reckon there’s a couple of hundred thousand Australia wide that are out there unregistered,” said Mr Bertoldo. “They mainly want them handed in to dealers not police stations. Anything such as air guns, shot fires, centrefires – anything in those specific categories.” The gun amnesty will run for three months starting on July 1. Unregistered guns can be handed in to any registered gun dealership.

Walkamin State School had a celebrity visitor last week in the form of Costa Georgiadis, the host of Gardening Australia. The landscape architect and TV personality spent a whole day at the school, helping students develop their vegetable patch and implementing a banana
plantation. “It’s pretty special to get him up here for the whole day,” said prinicpal Rik Baruksopulo. “Our kids don’t get many guests up here so it’s really nice.” Yuruga Nursery generously donated $100 of fruit trees to the school which the students planted with Costa’s help. He also dished out plen-
ty of advice about taking an organic approach to the garden and developing a compost area. “We’ve had a bad problem with nut grass so he’s given us some ideas, instead of spraying and using chemicals, to take our time and do it organically,” explained Mr Baruksopulo. “He’s linked it a lot into life - you take your time and do something properly,
you’ll see the results at the end of it.” Mr Baruksopulo said he was trying to implement a cooking program at the school which would utilise the fresh fruit and vegetables they were growing, focusing on healthy lifestyles and healthy eating. He said the garden would eventually be something for the whole community, not just the students.
Ravenshoe cafe fire heroes thanked Two years on from the Ravenshoe explosion, the heroic efforts of Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) personnel have been acknowledged at an awards ceremony. On 9 June, 2015 a Ravenshoe café experienced an explosion and subsequent fire as a result of a road traffic crash into the rear of the building. QFES Commissioner Katarina Carroll presented Ravenshoe Auxiliary fire-
fighter Nathaniel Stasse with the Commissioner’s Commendation for Bravery Award; Captain Robert Doyle with the Commissioner’s Commendation of Notable Action and Atherton Acting Inspector John Lindsay with the Commissioner’s Meritorious Service Award in recognition for their actions during the incident. Far Northern Region Fire Communications Officers and firefighters from
Ravenshoe, Atherton and Millaa Millaa also received Commissioner’s Unit Citations for their outstanding professionalism. “I am extremely proud of the incredible bravery these firefighters demonstrated on the day of the Ravenshoe café explosion,” Ms Carroll said. “Mr Stasse was on his way to lunch in the town’s centre, when the explosion occurred, and despite being off-duty, he ran across the
road and entered the café to evacuate people and rescue the injured, knowingly putting his own life at risk. Ms Carroll said Mr Doyle was the first to respond to the request for assistance at the explosion and utilising local knowledge, headed straight to the scene, calling for immediate back up as he went. Ms Carroll also wished to acknowledge the efforts of everyone involved in assisting on that day.

$128.9m for local health

Mareeba Hospital was not mentioned specifically in last week’s State Budget but that doesn’t mean it won’t be getting a slice of the $128.9 million allocated to the Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Services (CHHHS). A spokesperson for the Health Minuster said: “The Palaszczuk Government is committed to doing everything it can to ensure Mareeba residents receive the highest quality healthcare. “The Health Minister is continuing to call upon the LNP Turnbull Government to restore the $2.1 million in funding they have ripped away from Mareeba Hospital. “Furthermore, the 2017-18 State Budget handed down earlier this week included a $128.9 million funding boost to Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service (CHHHS), which is responsible for Mareeba Hospital. “CHHHS, like all of the State’s Hospital and Health Services (HHSs), is an independent authority re-
sponsible for the management of its own budget and day-to-day operations. “HHSs understand the healthcare needs of their local area and are best positioned to determine where day-to-day funding should be allocated.” Health and Ambulance Services Minister Cameron Dick said the new budget of $906.8 million was 16.6 per cent more than the 2016–17 operating budget of $777.9 million. “Cairns and Hinterland HHS is forecasting a deficit of $29.5m at the end of June 2018 as part of the three year recovery strategy for the health service. “This is an 11 per cent increase on what was provided through the 2016–17 budget and represents 84 per cent of this year’s total Queensland Health operating budget,’’ Mr Dick said. “The priority for this health budget is on frontline services and delivering on the vision of making Queenslanders amongst the healthiest people in the world.”
Tableland Red Cross shops call for winter donations “If you have some spare time over the weekend simply collect any winter clothing you no longer need and visit one of our stores to donate to help give them a new lease on life,” says Richard. Red Cross has over 150 stores in all states and territories and donated goods make up 90 per cent of sales. Your support could help families across the Tablelands doing it tough this winter as the cold weather means more people are in need of support.
Winter has begun to bite across the Tablelands and Red Cross shops are calling for quality donations of winter woollies to meet demand by shoppers and to help raise money for Red Cross. Head of Retail, Richard Wood says the greatest need right now is for coats, jackets, jumpers, boots, scarves and beanies. “Anything warm and woolly in good condition is greatly appreciated. If it’s the kind of thing you’d give to a friend then it’s something we’d love.”

2017-2018 State Budget
What did we get in the Far North? Despite some local community wins from the June 13 State Budget, our local members are distinctly unhappy with what we got here in the north. Member for Dalrymple Shane Knuth and Member for Kennedy Bob Katter have both issued scathing responses to the government’s decision to spend more money in Brisbane than anywhere else. KAP State Leader Katter said he, Knuth and the rest of he crossbenchers would vote against the State Budget if the government did not agree to four key initiatives for the north – power price reduction by five per cent, commiting to reduce North Queensland unemployment by six per cent by 2020, commiting unspent infrastructure funding to North Queensland to kick start the economy and setting up a North Queensland Budget Equity Board. “If the LNP stands with us, we can make this happen, we can create real change for North Queensland,” Mr Katter said. The state treasurer said in his budget speech that Queenslanders will not forget if the Federal Treasurer doesn’t commit money to Cross River Rail, but Bob Katter says North Queenslanders will not forget that they thought “$2billion was better spent
on a project so city people could get home from work a bit earlier, rather than on infrastructure projects to invest in North Queensland’s future. “That same $2billion could have seen the rail line out of the Galilee Basin already built, which would produce income for Queensland for decades to come”. Mr Katter said comments made by the Treasurer in his budget speech that ‘confidence has made a comeback’ showed how out of touch the government was with life outside of Brisbane. “Unemployment is as high as 14 per cent,” he said. “If business confidence was as high as the treasurer claims, we wouldn’t be seeing rates like this.” Member for Dalrymple Shane Knuth was just as critical of the budget but did say the allocations to refurbiush schools was welcomed. “The Budget has been sold as a budget for battlers and builders, but the north hasn’t been heard and the Government hasn’t committed to our demands to cut power costs, reduce unemployment, and boost infrastructure,” Mr Knuth said. He said the Budget’s $200 million project to build a hydro-electric pow-
er station at Burdekin Falls Dam could be reconfigured to create a much more beneficial system. “It would be much more valuable to gravity-feed water to Townsville through Hell’s Gate Dam, which could also provide hydro-electric power, on top of opening up the region for development.” However, Mr Knuth did welcome the funding commitments for local communities. Yungaburra State School will receive $540,000 for upgrades to B Block, stairs and concrete pathways, while Ravenshoe State School will receive $590,000 for H Block hall and tuckshop. “It’s terrific to see strong, ongoing investment in our schools,” Mr Knuth said. “By ensuring students have a quality learning environment, we’re helping them achieve their full potential at school.” The schools will receive the funding through the School Infrastructure Enhancement Program. Tablelands Regional Council $250,000 to help manage destructive weed Navua sedge. Atherton Police Station has been handed a big win, receiving a total $6.19 million for upgrades. Almost $1.5 million has been allocated in the Bud-
get to renew Tablelands Regional Council Recreational Reserves. “Recommencing reserves is a great investment in the preservation of our beautiful, pristine region,” Mr Knuth said. The Budget announcements are on top of previous commitments of $4.53 million for the Dimbulah hospital and $69.6 million for redevelopments to the Atherton Hospital, $250,000 for the CST Community Hub, and $2.5 million for the Ravenshoe Waste Water Treatment Plant. “Overall, I’m pleased with the Budget’s investment in improving the future of our education, safety, health and the future of our environment and key industries,” Mr Knuth said. Other major funding for the Tablelands will go towards Mareeba State School – $3.3 million in 2017-18 out of a $3.4 million total spend to conduct master planning and commence redevelopment. $2.2 million for Herberton auxiliary fire and rescue station relocation and upgrade as part of the Significant Regional Infrastructure Projects Program. $4 million is for widening of the Burke Developmental Road between Normanton and Dimbulah as part of a $7.5 million total spend.
Budget confirms power bills will rise again
Coordinator of the Queensland Electricity Users Network Jennifer Brownie said the State Budget clearly shows the Queensland Government has no intention of reducing power bills in the foreseeable future. “When Queensland
homes and businesses were sweletering last summer, the Queensland Government was knowingly pushing up wholesale electricity prices. This resulted in an almost doubling of profits from its electricity generators from $482 million to $892 million,” said
Ms Brownie. “But the frightening part is there is no relief in sight. Budget papers show the Queensland Government expects profits from its electricity generators to rise above $1 billion in 2017-2018. “The combined profits
from all its electricity assets is set to be over $3.1 billion in 2017-18. “There is only one thing worse than struggling to pay a power bill, its being sacked because your employer needed to make changes in order to pay their power bills.”

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
editorial@theexpressnewspaper.com.au
Thanks Wheelbarrow Race community The Wheelbarrow Race Committee would like to publically express its sincere gratitude to the past and present competitors, sponsors, supporters, community organisations and businesses that have supported teams and the race in general over the past 14 years. Particular mention to those who supported the event in 2017 after it was decided to reverse the program and run from Chillagoe to Mareeba. Whilst the event pays tribute to our recent European history, it has also developed a reputation as delivering significant charitable donations with nearly $2 million dollars being raised since 2004. Other benefits the Wheelbarrow Race brings is opportunities for not for profit organisations in the communities that it passes through to raise funds and for small businesses to have increased patronage. When organising a significant regional event there is a plethora of issues to consider some of which are not quantifiable and are of higher priority, the likes of public safety and traffic management. These higher priority matters often override issues such as specific historical relevance or recent race history which, to the unaware, can be seen as flippant. To keep a regional community event like the Wheelbarrow Race vibrant and energetic you have to be innovative with your program to remain locally relevant otherwise it will decline in participation and let’s be realistic you need runners to enter to have a race. The Wheelbarrow Race Committee is made up of volunteers op-
erating independent of Council although typically chaired by a sitting Councillor, also volunteering time as the race is reliant on the Council for financial and in kind support. The Race Committee is very aware of keeping the race equally relevant to history as it is to participants and to its communities. For example the benefits of extra patronage to Chillagoe and Almaden businesses or the fact that the Chillagoe school kids participated at the race start due to the reversed race program was a positive outcome that had not occurred since race inception. So in short The Great Wheelbarrow Race is endeavouring to honour our history, support small communities and raise money for charity by offering an affordable, unique, safe endurance sporting event to competitors of all ability levels. We realise we can’t be everything to everyone, but to those community groups, individuals and businesses that work with and for the event, history shows that they are ones that benefit. The Great Wheelbarrow Race Committee
Mareeba given red herring by new CHHHS Chair The recent major news feature in The Express dated Wednesday June 7, 2017 which was headed “Hospital fears Allayed” and “All services will remain” are the words of new Cairns Hinterland Health Services board Chairman Mr Clive Skarott, who states that he was born and raised in Atherton and spent some time at school in Mareeba. Let me assure Mr Skarott that back in his early days in Mareeba,

the Mareeba District Hospital functioned to its full capacity utilising all facilities and staff to their maximum capacity including operating theatres. This was the case for the Mareeba District Hospital prior to 1980 and post 1980 until 1992, when politics intervened from Government and the Queensland Health Service. Services have been depleted since 1992 and for Board Chairman Clive Skarott to say otherwise is misleading the public of Mareeba District and the wider Cape. For Mr Skarott to say our Hospital fears are allayed and all services will remain is saying to the Community of Mareeba District and Cape that he accepts the status quo of services provided and nothing will change. Obviously on the day Mr Skarott visited the Mareeba District Hospital he was wearing blinkers and ear plugs for we all know that our operating theatres only function a few hours a week if that. Our sterilisation unit has been decommissioned, a full ward has had all the beds removed and replaced with Community Service staff and offices and the list goes on as was discussed at our recent public meeting where some 1000 Mareeba residents attended. Does Mr Skarott not believe that Mareeba District Hospital should have some new services introduced to make life a little easier for those people who are on Chemotherapy or Dialysis etc, or does the Mareeba District Hospital remain in his mind the only major hospital in the Far North which does not have these medical facilities. I can assure CHHHS Board Chairman Mr Clive Skarott that the fears of the Mareeba District Hospital are not allayed and that if he
believes that the existing downsized services he witnessed on his recent visit to the Mareeba Hospital will remain, then our battle to once again Save the Mareeba Hospital has only just begun. Denis McKinley, Mareeba

Register for Relay for Life
Burdon on developers
I am writing to invite the local community to unite in the fight against cancer by registering for our 2017 Tablelands Relay For Life. Cancer Council’s Tablelands Relay For Life raises vital funds to support our work locally and give hope to each and every person diagnosed with cancer. Last year the event raised more than $71,700 for the cause and we hope the community will once again band together and continue making a difference. In Far North Queensland alone, more than 1430 people are diagnosed with cancer each year – those people are our family members, our friends, our colleagues. Every step our Relayers take helps ensure locals diagnosed with cancer have access to adequate support and care, and the latest cancer treatments. This year, Tablelands Relay For Life will be held on October 28-29 at Atherton Showgrounds. Teams will then take to the track and relay for nine hours in solidarity for the cause. Thank you to everyone who has pledged to take part and started fundraising. We encourage others to also join the cause. The simple gesture of taking part and raising funds means the world to those affected by cancer.
Katie Ward (The Express, Wednesday June 14) seems triggered by the libertarian viewpoint on the rights of legitimate landowners. It is already hard enough to establish a venture such as KURWorld. But in recent decades a new burden on developers has emerged. Green-vigilante resident groups want to impose their own rules. Most of these residents have bought nearby ground and developed it in a similar, albeit smaller, way to that planned by KUR-World. If “more” is “too many” then should any be there at all? KUR-World objectors who live in a building in that area and drive to and from it in a car are, by logical extension, also objecting to their own presence there. Such objectors should remember that without mining, farming and manufacturing we all go broke. That means no money for anything “environmental” ever. KUR-World won’t be mining or farming, both hated by greenies, but it will be manufacturing tourismrelated activities – which couldn’t be less offensive. Those who have become accustomed to enjoying the undeveloped ambience of the KUR-World site should have bought it if they preferred it undeveloped. Peter Campion, Tolga

The LAND Free Malanda forum will help your business and health
North Queensland farming families wanting to improve their business and improve their health are being encouraged to attend a free forum in Malanda next week. AgForce Drought Project Manager Tahna Jackson said the Malanda event was the second of five events being held across Queensland this year under the State Government’s Community Drought Support Program. “The prolonged and severe drought has taken an enormous financial, environmental and emotional toll on farming families right throughout Queensland,” she said. “The ‘Managing Risks: Securing the Future’ forum is aimed at providing social support to farming families while providing tips and tools to improve their business, and revitalise their health and well-being.” Queensland Farmers’ Federation Project Manager Ross Henry said crop insurance had a lot of farmers and industry talking so it is good to be able to discuss some progress being made to develop the agricultural insurance market in Queensland. QFF Energy Savers Project Manager Andrew Chamberlin said he was looking forward to sharing the findings from energy audits and highlighting the realistic and practical
on-farm efficiencies that farmers can make to reduce their energy use. “The QFF Energy Savers program has conducted case studies on farms across a number of commodities, including some right here on the Tablelands, and identified ways your farm businesses can reduce your electricity bills.” Ms Jackson said renowned ag photographer Fiona Lake would conduct sessions on taking photos on your phone and how to use social media effectively, while other topics being discussed included financial planning, farm safety and maximising irrigation efficiency. “Advances in technology will particularly be in the spotlight during the forum with a presentation on a new biosecurity app, discussion on drones in agriculture and Aglive representatives rounding out the day with a session on farming in digital times,” she said. The ‘Managing Risks: Securing the Future’ forum is being held at Foxwell Park, 336 Foxwell Road, Malanda on Wednesday 21 June from 9am to 4pm. Tickets are free but registrations are essential via Tahna Jackson on jacksont@agforceqld.org.au or 0408 786 057.
Mill crushing season is underway at MSF Sugar’s South Johnstone Mill.
4.4m tonnes of sugar expected to be crushed Australia’s largest sugarcane farmer, second largest raw sugar exporter and third largest miller, MSF Sugar, expects its four mills to crush around 4.4 million tonnes of sugarcane during the 2017 crushing season. The crush estimates are lower than the previous season’s record throughput of 4.85 million tonnes, largely due to the impact of inconsistent weather conditions on crop growth. Absence of a wet sea-

son on the Tableland and continual drought conditions in the Maryborough region, where there was no significant rainfall from July 2016 to March 2017, affected the crop. MSF Sugar CEO Mike Barry said there was no doubt the sugar industry could be unpredictable, influenced as it is by weather, growing conditions and market price. However, with the company investing strongly in infrastructure during the off-season
he was confident that 2017 would deliver positive outcomes. On the Tableland, where crushing started on May 30, while beneficial storms late in 2016 and early this year were helpful to the crop, overall weather conditions mean the prediction for the Tableland Mill crush is for around 730,000 tonnes, down on last year’s crush of 819,152 tonnes. Mr Barry said there was already concern for next year’s crop with the out-
look very much dependent on rainfall delivered by the coming wet season. He said that with the Tinaroo Dam at only 50 per cent capacity, irrigators are expecting a reduced water allocation of between 45 and 55 per cent for the next crop. “This may mean a reduction in crop size for next year’s harvest with less yield and area under cane,” he said. The Tableland Mill, the most technological-
ly-advanced sugar mill in Queensland, is supplied by 65 growers. Best modern farming practices, including trash blanketing, wide row spacing, minimum tillage and controlled traffic farming techniques are utilised by around 60 per cent of the cane farms in the region. With the season underway, motorists travelling to Far North Queensland are reminded that cane trains are now active throughout the region.
SUGAR REPORTS MOSSMAN MILL CRUSHING STATISTICS WEEK 1 The throughput for Mossman Mill was hampered during the first week of crushing with poor plant availability as well as several major breakdown events and some process control issues around the Evaporators and Boilers. The factory processed 14,671 tonnes of cane at an average crushing rate of 352tonnes/hour. The major down time during the week was due to No. 1 Mill delivery roller scraper plate breaking, the control valve on the effets failing, a massecuite pump drive failure, and trips from control issues on the boiler stream drum levels. Despite plant availability being at 30% the factory tonnage was 84% of budgeted throughput with the higher crushing rate achieved during the week. • Total for week: 14,671 tonnes • CCS for week: 11.46 • Total cane crushed to date: 14,671 tonnes • CCS average to date: 11.46 • 2017 crop estimate: 930,000 tonnes

Bullride thrills hundreds The Great Northern Bull Riding Series kicked off on the weekend in Mareeba before it continues across the Far North culminating in a final in Cairns in October. Hundreds turned out to see who would last eight seconds with loud cheers for all the local cowboys who were pitted against some of the country’s
best bull riders. Mareeba shop A Touch of Country is one of the major sponsors of the event and gave away $450 in prize money to one lucky spectator for the best dancing during the break. Perks reputation preceded him, he was dressed, ready and waiting in the ring for the bout to start and after three calls his opponent failed to enter the ring, so he was automatically awarded the Gold Medal for the Junior Super Heavyweight Division. Teams prepare for grand finals this Thursday WITH the ladies Grand Final match held last night (Tuesday June 20) between Miakats vs Shockers, the Senior Mens championship title for the Mareeba Winter Season competition will be decided this Thursday night. Red Devils and Stingrays will contest the grand final with both sides earning the opportunity to clinch the seasons top honours following excellent semi-final victories last week. Certainly the grand finalist go into the grand final, having a good combination of very experienced players, together with outstanding juniors in their respective line ups. Commencing at 7pm, both Red Devils and Stingrays as well as their supporters, should have confidence that their team has the ability to claim the winter season title. The encounter promises to prove a most absorbing finale to the Mareeba winter fixtures. Close exciting clashes were a highlight of the Junior Semi Finals. Sinkers qualified for the Junior High school final, following a narrow 45 to 44 win over the young Dunkin Donuts side. They now face Daggers in the championship decider on Thursday afternoon. A final in which Daggers
Zayd Myrteza might well have a major influence on the outcome of this important fixture for these young stars. Highlanders won the senior Highschool semi final defeating Sonlia by 48 to 40. However Highlanders only gaining the edge over the concluding stages. They now require to overcome the Janators for the championship, in the curtain raiser to the Mens Final on Thursday. This could indeed become a classic Grand Final as both sides have a number of highly talented juniors, who are capable of guiding their side to victory. The early Men’s Semi Final last week between Red Devils and Blue Angels was indeed a close keenly contested affair. Both sides produced outstanding basketball during the first half and at half time the scores were locked together at 42 all. Even at three quarter time Blue Angels and Red Devils were still looking towards a grand final berth, with red devils holding a narrow 53 to 50 lead. However the last quarter saw red devils constantly scoring baskets, while Blue Angels failed to convert numerous scoring attempts, giving the Semi Final victory to Red Devils by 82 to 66.
Andy Harris was tower of strength for Red Devils, while their young players Luke Fresta, Brandon Osborne, Layton Osborne were impressive throughout the Semi. Blue Angels generally played extremely well, Jeremy Mackay and Tyson Tatti scoring some wonderful baskets. The other semi final between Stingrays and Spare Parts was convincingly won by Stingrays. They led throughout the Semi and were never challenged in their 66 to 37 win over Spare Parts. The Stingrays side had many good players, but David Hawke and Jake Priestly stood out. Spare Parts failed to produce their good season form during the Grand Final Qualifying match. Although John Lacey played soundly for the defeated Spare Parts side. THURSDAY GRAND FINAL GAME TIMES 4.10pm – Junior High School Grand Final: Sinkers vs Daggers. 5.30pm – Senior High School Grand Final: Highlanders vs Janators. 7pm – Mens Grand Final: Red Devils vs Stingrays.

EXPRESS sPORT Bulls run out of steam The Mareeba Bulls have again stumbled after leading the Innisfail Cutters 2-0, before falling away to lose 3-2 at home on Saturday night. The intense game saw the Cutters send a 94th extra time dagger through the hearts of Bulls fans who thought their side was home and hosed after striker Steven Cater had put the Bulls two goals clear in the 50th minute. In one of the highest quality football games witnessed this year, both teams came out playing fast, aggressive football, with both sides shading the opening exchanges. The home side used the wide open spaces of Borzi Park to move the Cutters around with attacking trio Steven Cater, Paul Ruiz and Jaydon Wells enjoying good opportunities resulting in Wells being brought down in the penalty area giving Ruiz the opportunity to convert from the penalty spot and giving the home side a 1-0 in the 41st minute. In the second period the Bulls came out firing and doubled the lead in the 50th minute with Cater doubling the advantage to give Bulls a 2-0 lead, but the Cutters hit back almost immediately with youngster Harrison Corica scoring to bring the score to 2-1. Joshua Taylor then drew the sides level in the 82nd minute. A 2-all both
sides had chances with the Cutters coming close on a few occasions and Bulls players Well’s and Pendenza also having two great chances to take the lead. But it was former FNQ Heat midfielder Darcy McCormack who stepped up to slot home the winner for Innisfail in the 94th minute to break the Bulls hearts. “We just need to keep working, it’s a learning experience and something we need to learn to make sure it doesn’t happen again,” Coach Alex Srhoj stated. “We did everything right for most of the game, but not playing for the full 90 minutes is hurting us.” The loss has now pushed the Bulls back to fourth position on the ladder, dropping six points in the last two games that would have seen the Bulls top of the league. Every game from now is a must win for the local boys, starting with this weekends game away to fifth place Southside Comets. The Bulls reserves continued their recent run of good form with a 3-2 win over the ladder leaders and now opens up a possible premiership run. Damian Wildman scored a 82nd minute winner for the Bulls. Wildman had a busy weekend scoring a hat trick on Friday night in the Bulls 2nd division Orange side 3-0 win

away over the Comets. Meanwhile the performance of the weekend was the 2nd division Black side who trounced the Stratford Dolphins 7-0 to cement their place in the top half of the second
division league. The ladies went down 4-1, after opening up a 1-0 lead through Samantha Cater, but the Bulls could not keep up the pace with the Cutters falling
away in the second half. The Bulls play away this Saturday to the Southside Comets, while the clubs two second division teams play at home on Friday night from 6.30pm.
Roosters fall to Ivanhoes in 44-12 defeat
Roosters forward Luke West up against a strong Ivanhoes on Sunday.
The Atherton Roosters have slumped to their worst defeat of 2017 after losing to Ivanhoes 44-12 at Smithfield on Sunday. A promising start saw the Roosters leading 8-6 after 15 minutes, but they soon fell off the pace and Ivanhoes slowly took control of the match. Ivanhoes led 16-8 at the break and scored four unanswered tries in the final twenty minutes to wrap up the match. Roosters coach Dean Howard said his side got a good start but again came away with a lot of unforced errors. “We were going really well until the break then the mistakes started and Ivanhoes kept us on the back foot,” Howard said. “There was every opportunity for us to win that game but we didn’t turn up for the second half.” This Saturday the Roosters host Brothers in three grades from 4pm at Roosters Stadium.
Gators happy with draw in tough away match “We’ll take that” said coach Tye Ingebrigtsen of the Gladiators’ 34-all draw against Innisfail Brothers on the weekend. The team played away with four top players down who are all out with injuries and still managed to play a strong game and retain their position in 3rd place on the leaderboard. “Innisfail are a good team they’ve only ever lost one game all season,” said Ingebrigtsen. “But we always give our all and it was an impressive result.” Man of the Match went to 18 year old Payden Porter who stepped up for the first time from the Reserves to A

Grade. “We gave him a go and he was fantastic,” said Ingebrigtsen. There are now only eight games left of the season with the Gladiators sitting just two points behind the leaders. “We’re feeling confident about the rest of the season and think we’ve got a good chance of making it into the finals,” said Ingebrigtsen. “The club hasn’t been in a final in about five years.” Next week the Gladiators will play Yarrabah who currently sit second on the ladder. The game will be played at home in Mareeba on Saturday night,
