Gardening enthusiasts shine A COMBINATION of green thumbs, love and elbow grease has made a Mareeba couple champion gardeners. Frank and Wendy Vittori took out Champion Garden at the annual Mareeba District Garden Awards last Monday. Now in its 50 year, the annual event attracted high quality nominations across more than 12 categories, with the highest number of nominations ever received at 30. Mr and Mrs Vittori also claimed first prize in the Best Rural Residential Garden and Best Outdoor Living Area categories. The couple have toiled for 20 years to create a backyard oasis like no other. Awards organsier Debbie Sweedman said the standard of entries in 2016 was incredible. Garden Awards judge Matt Mitchley from Designer Gardens in Cairns was honoured to be invited for the second year running to judge and was very impressed with the gardens presented this year. “Each garden that entered the year prior was more impressive than last year

and there was some very inspiring new entries,” he said. “Overall, the presentation of all the gardens in the show were of a very high standard, some with very unique styles and maintained to perfection and it was a hard task judging the entries to pick each category winners.” Part of the Mareeba Rodeo festival, the ceremony was held at Skybury and was attended by more than 100 locals. The event has been a fixture of Mareeba since 1981 when it was started by Dawn Voerman of the since-closed Red Rocks Nursery. Ms Voerman was a member of the Far North Queensland Nurseryman’s Association and was well-known in local gardening circles. The first recipients of the awards were L&L Pin. Since Ms Voerman’s retirement, Joy Paterson from Mareeba Garden Centre has presented the winning garden trophy on many occasions as the FNQNA representative over the years. MAREEBA State School’s prep students have celebrated their first 100 days of school in style. The bubbly youngsters were treated to a special visit from Mareeba Shire councillor Angela Toppin last Friday, who praised their achievement. The teaching veteran helped cut a celebratory cake and read from Mas-

Resort set to make region KUR-ching! By Michael Serenc TABLELANDS business and tourism leaders have hailed a proposed $650 million eco-resort at Myola, hoping it will turbocharge the region’s economy. “KUR-World”, a planned 626ha resort and innovation hub, was given coordinated project status by the Queensland Coordinator-General last Tuesday. A coordinated project applies to projects which have complex approval requirements involving local, State and Federal governments, significant environmental effects, strategic significance to the region and/or significant infrastructure requirements. To streamline the process, Reever and Ocean Developments will only have to deal with the State Government who will also act on behalf of the Federal Government. Tourism Kuranda executive officer Marc Sleeman said the project had “substantial” benefits for both Kuranda and the wider Tablelands. “From a tourism perspective, this project would help reinforce Kuranda as the number one visitor destination in our region,” he said. “It can only be beneficial in increasing the length of stays in Kuranda and the Atherton Tablelands.” Mr Sleeman said as long as any environmen-

tal issues were addressed during the consultation process, Tourism Kuranda would have no qualms with the ambitious project. As it stands, part of the proposed site’s southern area contains habitat of the protected Kuranda tree frog, but the bulk of development would occur in the northern section. In all, only 232ha of the 626ha site will be developed. “This would be a vital hub for additional day visitation for Atherton, Mareeba, Chillagoe and I see it as a project that would not only be an economic stimulus for jobs, but also visitor numbers to Kuranda and Tropical North Queensland,” Mr Sleeman said. Mr Sleeman said access roads linking the resort to Kuranda would not only benefit the town’s village centre but also Skyrail and the Kuranda Scenic Railway. Mareeba Chamber of Commerce president Joe Moro said he was “excited” by the project, with representatives from Reever and Ocean to meet chamber members at a luncheon in September. “We’re very enthusiastic about the project and we’d like to know more,” he said. “We definitely see lots of spinoffs for the area as well.” KUR-World will be split into two distinct zones, featuring a northern section known as “Seren-

Ken Lee vowed to proceed with a “comprehensive community engagement program” over the coming months. “We are prepared to put in every effort, and invest heavily in the required specialist resources, to thoroughly understand what needs to occur during the design and construction phase to ensure protection of the natural environmental, which is an essential aspect of the project,” he

ity” and a southern section known as “Spirit”. Most of the project’s development will be contained in “Serenity”, land which has been used for farming and agriculture since the 1800s. By contrast, Spirit features steep hills, towering rainforest and pristine natural habitat which has remained largely untouched and is set to have low-impact adventure and nature-based activities. A luxury 200-room hotel, three or four star resort, residential villa accommodation, education and business facilities and a health and wellbeing centre are all slated for the project. The Coordinator-General is expected to release a Draft Terms of Reference (TOR) for KUR-World next month for comment by both the public and government agencies. The project still has to jump through several hoops, including the publication of an Environmental Impact Statement, before the Coordinator General can recommend approving or rejecting it. said. “We will work with the local community over the next 12 to 18 months to build support and we are confident KUR-World will be a long term asset to the local community.” If approved, about 545 jobs would be created during the resort’s construction phase with a further 600 jobs created once operational.

Local cops juggle jobs

By Senior Constable Aleda Day LIVING in a small town means local police officers sometimes wear many hats and Senior Constable Ian Carroll of Forsayth Police is no different. Senior Constable Carroll, who used to be a Warrant Officer Class Two in the Army before joining the service, helps organise Anzac Day marches, is a member of the Forsayth Rural Fire Brigade as well as the Forsayth All Sports committee. He is also a school Adopt-a-Cop which sees him regularly playing sports with the kids, attending school parades and other activities. He’s even one of the swimming instructors during the summer season. So it seemed only appropriate recently for him to have the honour of presenting both Mary and Thomas Dixon with their medals, recognising in excess of 20 years of diligent and ethical service to the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services. The pair, who serve as part of the Gilberton Rural Brigade, were

pleased to have been recognised for their service and thanked the wider Gilberton community and other brigade members for their dedication and support. Forsayth is located in the heart of the Etheridge Shire and Forsayth Division is approximately 10,000 square kilometres.

The airline has signed a 33-year lease on a 20,000 square metre lot, delighting Cook Shire mayor Peter Scott. “Daintree Air Services are our first tenant, and are proposing to develop a general aviation facility, including a maintenance operation over the next 12 months,” he said. “Developing the Cooktown Airport is vital to growing our economy and creating jobs, with the potential for 50 jobs and millions in economic activity.” Cr Scott said negotiations were also underway to have a second operation located at the park, with a third proponent also indicating interest. THE LNP’s former candidate for Kennedy, Jonathan Pavetto, has issued a thank you message to supporters after his recent election defeat. Mr Pavetto has not been contactable since he lost to incumbent Kennedy MP Bob Katter, polling a disappointing 38 per cent after preferences. “I would like to thank my campaign team and supporters who campaigned for the LNP at the recent federal election,” he said in the message. With less than 100 days between preselection and the election, my LNP team was able to plan and execute a well organised campaign that focussed on securing a bright

future for North Queensland. “Locally, we focussed on the things that mattered – delivering the job creating infrastructure projects we have been missing out on for far too long.” In a swipe at Mr Katter, Mr Pavetto accused the maverick politician of being elected on the back of Labor, Greens and Palmer United Party preferences at the last election in 2013. “More people in North Queensland supported me in this election than Bob Katter at the last election,” he said. “Unfortunately for North Queensland, Bob Katter’s links with the Labor Party and trade unions almost guaranteed his election because

he secured Labor and Green preferences.” With 86 per cent of votes counted last week, Mr Katter’s primary vote at this election was just under 40 per cent, while Mr Pavetto’s was at 32 per cent. The 25-year-old did not rule out another tilt at contesting the seat at the next federal election and said he would stay on in North Queensland to work “behind the scenes to ensure communities within the Kennedy electorate had a fair hearing in Canberra”. Despite several attempts last week, The Express was unable to contact Mr Pavetto for comment.

TWO Mareeba health professionals have been recognised for their efforts in the region at a major awards ceremony. Dr Cheryl Harnischfeger and nurse Julie Bulst were named GP of the Year and Practice nurse of the year respectively at a Northern Queensland Primary Health Network (NQPHN) conference earlier this month. More than 300 health professionals and expert health speakers from across north Queensland and the rest of Australia attended the Cairns conference and awards ceremony. A joint winner, Dr Harnischfeger works at Mareeba’s Amaroo Medical while Ms Bulst is employed by Mulungu Aboriginal Corporation Primary Health Care Service. NQPHN CEO Robin Moore said the conference was a perfect opportunity for people from various healthcare backgrounds and professions to join forces to discuss

how to make health better for the local community. “Anyone who had the privilege of participating in any of the workshops or other activities could not help but be struck by the open mindedness, depth of knowledge, and seriousness of purpose of all our delegates,” he said. “We have true gems embedded in our community who are working tirelessly every day to both reduce health inequities and promote healthier lifestyles. “Every single person who came to the conference is a pioneer, and that was clearly demonstrated at our awards ceremony.” The inaugural conference focused on connecting health providers to deliver better health outcomes through general practice, pharmacy, dental, nursing, allied health, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander medical services, and hospital and health services.

Crowds revel in rodeo fun A CAVALCADE of colour, creativity and cowboys have capped off a bumper weekend for the Mareeba Rodeo. Thousands of locals and visitors flocked to last Friday night’s procession along Byrnes St, with young lass Sarah Bensted crowned this year’s Rodeo Queen. Fellow entrants Teagan Smith and Angelina Pulverenti were named Rodeo Princess and Miss Popularity respectively. Ms Bensted thanked her family for their support, the other entrants and her sponsors. She said she was looking forward to representing the Mareeba Rodeo Association for the year ahead. The action continued into Saturday with revellers stampeding Kerribee Park for two-days of fun-filled fanfare. From sideshow alley to bucking bulls and adrenalinepumping rides, there was no shortage of entertainment throughout the weekend. The rodeo’s resident petting zoo was a clear favourite for youngsters, who got up close and personal with everything from guinea pigs to goats and much, much more. “I like the animals because they’re so fluffy and very cute,” said Jasmine Savaglio, 6. Petting zoo owner, Amusements Plus’ Kelli Stollznow, said children loved the interaction with real farm animals. “It’s been phenomenal, we love bringing animals here and entertaining the kids and the families,” she said. “It’s been really big.” Enjoying a cool slushie down at sideshow alley, local couple Robert and Pettina Jacques were loving the rodeo atmosphere together with daughter, Cleone, 2.

“There’s been non-stop action in the ring,” Mr Jacques said. “It’s all about the animals, the atmosphere and the dust.” Mareeba District Rodeo Association secretary Angela Sturgess said almost 500 rodeo competitors had tried their luck in the ring this year, coupled with a bumper weekend crowd. “I think it was really electric, everyone’s been happy and upbeat,” she said. “Thank God for the volunteers, they all did their jobs and they helped make it fall into place.” In the lead-up to Saturday’s nights arena events, including fan favourite State of Origin, outgoing Rodeo president Jim Blakeney was given a fitting farewell at the arena after 32 years in the top job. Mr Blakeney was presented with a special belt buckle by Mareeba mayor Tom Gilmore to commemorate his service and said he was humbled by the outpouring of support from the crowd. “I couldn’t believe it. My grandkids were all in tears,” Mr Blakeney said. “It’s not what I asked for but I do appreciate it…The number of people that thanked and congratulated me was overwhelming.” Mr Blakeney will stay on as caretaker of Kerribee Park with wife Shirley. “As I pointed out in my farewell speech, I didn’t do it alone,” he said. “There’s been good committees over many years, great friends and volunteers.” A new Rodeo president will be elected in November.

Farmers feel price shock By Michael Serenc TABLELANDS farmers will struggle to make ends meet after a 12.3 per cent price rise on transitional irrigation tariffs was implemented at the start of this month. Queensland Competition Authority recommended the price hike in its final determination report for this financial year, despite a strident campaign against it, spearheaded by Far North Queensland Electricity Users Network. But with the failure of that campaign, Canegrowers Tablelands director Rajinder Singh said cane growing costs would rise by 50 cents a tonne, with overall farm costs increasing anywhere from $5000 to $50,000 depending on the size of the property. “Something needs to be done about the impact of prices,” he said. “We can’t continue to be subjected to these types of increases.” Mr Singh said a poor wet season had forced farmers to pump more water into their properties, increasing electricity usage. Farms which are considered a “medium priority” by State water provider SunWater will now only receive 70 per cent of their usual water allocation which took effect on July 1. “That’s our more immediate concern because that’s going to limit how much water we can put on,” he said. “But we return to a normal wet season at the end of the year so our allocation is returned to normal.”

The water allocation is reviewed every month. Dalrymple MP Shane Knuth slammed the power price hike as “absolutely criminal”. “Coming into the 2015 election, the big issue back then was the price of electricity, which none of the other parties would address,” he said. “Farmers could not afford it then, let alone this massive increase now.” Mr Knuth said he planned to introduce a private member’s bill into parliament within the next few months aimed at reducing electricity prices by 33 per cent for all Ergon customers. Mr Knuth will work in conjunction with electricity price lobby group ARC UP to formulate the bill. In the meantime, Tablelands farmers on irrigation electricity tariffs 62, 65 and 66 will be eligible for some financial assistance in the form of waivers on fixed charges through the State Government’s $78 million Drought Assistance Package. The entire Mareeba Shire and Tablelands Shire were officially declared drought zones in May. Mareeba Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association president Joe Moro said the price hike would hurt all farmers in the region. “It’s going to have a negative impact on producers. Some will have to make decisions on whether or not it’s viable to continue growing certain crops,” he said. “This price increase has a negative impact on the amount of jobs that could be available. If prices were lower, there would be a lot more activity in the area.”

Canegrowers Tablelands director Rajinder Singh said cane farmers would feel the strain of a massive increase on transitional irrigation tariffs.

Blast from the past for new Yungaburra store We’re open:

A TRIP down memory lane marked the start of construction for Yungaburra’s new Foodworks store. Adelene Franklin, the original owner of the store until it was sold in 1990, attended an official sod turning ceremony last Wednesday. The store was damaged beyond repair by fire last October, forcing current owners Phillip and Kate Mete to knock down the building and start again. Mrs Mete said the fire which destroyed her store was hard to stomach. “Seeing our heart and soul go up in flames that day was something I’ll never forget,” she said. “This business was our life…But finally I feel there’s a silver lining. “We are really excited about the future.” Mrs Mete said she wanted the store to have a modern design while still paying tribute to "Yungaburra’s heritage and village feel that everyone in this town is very proud of”. “We will be asking locals to make their request for various product lines they’d like to see introduced in the store,” she said. “We’ll continue to employ local people and we hope to grow our staff by 35 per cent.” Mrs Franklin’s late husband Les started the original grocery shop in 1968 with generations of the family having since worked there. The 92-year-old mum-of-five only lives two doors up from the new store and is currently the oldest living resident in Yungaburra. Mrs Franklin said the ceremony was an emotional day for her, but she was thrilled a new store would rise from the ashes of the old one. The new Foodworks store is expected to be open by December.

TRC Planning scheme finally delivered Theft risks ant spread TABLELANDS Regional Council’s much-delayed planning scheme has finally been adopted. After a seven year process, the document, which incorporates the shire’s new regional planning fees and charges, will take effect from September 1. “Following extensive public consultation including numerous meetings with state agencies and key sector groups, review and reply to over 1500 submissions received, and several state interest reviews, I am extremely

pleased to confirm that we now have a single set of rules for planning in the TRC,” said Mayor Joe Paronella. “The major benefits include increased flexibility through a greater emphasis on self-assessable development and improved social, environmental and financial sustainability through a more equitable approach to development.” Charges for trunk infrastructure will align with the capital works program and asset management plan to ensure

that developer contributions provide for future upgrades as a result of development. Trunk infrastructure charges will be approximately 20 per cent less than the maximum adopted charge proposed by State Government. Information sessions on the planning scheme will be held throughout the region over the coming months. The planning scheme is available at www.trc.qld.gov.au and from council’s customer service centres.

A CARELESS theft of fill dirt at a known electric ant quarantine site has sparked fears the invasive pest could spread further on the Tablelands. Mareeba Shire Council was notified of the theft last Monday from Myola’s Owen Creek Stockpile Site along Myola Oak Forest Rd. The stockpile site is currently under quarantine by Biosecurity Queensland. Movement controls for electric

ants are in place across the Cairns region, including at Kuranda and surrounds. The 1.5mm long ant is native to Central and South America and is golden brown in colour. According to the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries, the electric ant can “inflict painful stings on wild and domestic animals and on humans” It was first detected in Cairns in 2006.

Mareeba Lions and Lioness Clubs held their annual changeover on July 9. Held at the Mareeba RSL, it was a night of celebrations as both club presidents of the past year handed over their gavels to the new 2016-2017 presidents. In a first for Mareeba Lions, local accountant Deanna Percy was welcomed as the new and first female president of the

club. Leading the way for the Lionesses is long term Mareeba local Lyn Dyer. Ms Percy takes over from past president David Mills and Mrs Dyer takes over from Janet Mills. This is the first time in Mareeba Lions history that a local businesswoman has been inducted as president.

The LAND Summit to tackle weed problems A SUMMIT involving local, State and Federal governments could help galvanise support to combating devastating weeds on the Tablelands. Dalrymple MP Shane Knuth said a joint discussion involving producers and representatives of government may be able to expedite the process to get much-needed funding to eradicate navua sedge and parthenium, both of which have had a serious impact on farming land. “We need to highlight this problem as a matter of urgency,” he said. “We would be looking at weeds across the state, but we see parthenium and sedge as having the most impact. “Much more needs to be done.” Parthenium, navua sedge, giant sensitive plant, sicklepod, fireweed and hymenachne are all key targets of Tablelands Regional Council’s (TRC’s) Pest Management Plan. Navua sedge is capable of producing up to 500 million seeds per hectare, with the potential to reduce grazing and pasture capacity by up to 40 per cent. According to the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries, parthenium costs the country’s beef industry $16.5 million a year and another several million dollars a year for various other crops. The herb-like weed invades “disturbed bare areas and pastures” and can cause skin irritation. “When you see country taken over by parthenium, you see the quality of that pasture ruined,” Mr Knuth said. “I’ve seen in the southern part of my electorate, in the grain farming communities, massive and extensive work put in to eliminate parthenium.” TRC is hoping the State Government would agree to $570,000 worth of funding to combat sedge. The money would be spent on vehicles, quick spray units and the establishment of a dedicated taskforce to eradicate the weed.

ON ALERT: Banana farmers are being urged to familiarised themselves with the latest biosecurity protocols.

New biosecurity laws in effect TABLELANDS banana farmers are being urged to familiarise themselves with the latest biosecurity protocols. Coming into effect at the start of this month, the Biosecurity Act 2014 features changes in terminology and requirements by property owners or occupiers when dealing with Panama disease tropical race 4 in Queensland. “There will also be some subtle differences to the way authorised biosecurity officers carry out their duties,” said Panama TR4 Program leader Rebecca Sapuppo. “Officers will now seek written consent for entering properties for surveillance and growers will be asked to nominate a suitable

representative to meet biosecurity officers for consent at the time of entry.” The TR4 Program has developed a number of resources specific to Panama disease tropical race 4 and the new Biosecurity Act for growers. “Key aspects of the Biosecurity Act 2014 and fact sheets were recently sent to all growers by the program,” Ms Sapuppo said. “Updates to the Grower Kit that focus on the new legislation and how it affects management of Panama disease tropical race 4 will be mailed out soon.”

The new act comes after a recent visit by

State Agriculture Minister Leanne Donaldson to the Tablelands late last month. Ms Donaldson toured Dennis Howe’s 600ha banana crop at Mutchilba and reaffirmed her government’s latest injection of $7.3 million to combat Panama disease. That includes $5.2 million to continue surveillance and containment work undertaken by Biosecurity Queensland. The Far North’s banana industry suffered a shock in March last year when a Tully Valley farm became the first in Queensland to test positive for TR4. PROPERTY Jannali @ Amaroo – Benefits of buying off the plan...

23 Lots are currently under construction at Amaroo and are available now to purchase off the plan in our new stages Karobean (6 lots) and Jannali (17 lots). Buying off the plan offers new land owners many benefits, for first homebuyers, it creates time – time to save for settlement, time to plan for settlement, time to design their home. Buying off the plan can also give first homebuyers advantages not available to a purchaser of finished second hand property eg: stamp duty savings in many instances, plus the First Home Owners Grant $20,000 from July 1, 2016. The ability and time to carefully plan floor plans and finishes is a process that can be very time consuming, buying of the plan offers all purchasers the opportunity to have have plenty time to design their dream home, while waiting for the lot to settle. This provides more in terms of choice of house plans, layouts, views and finishes and is

a huge plus. Also to consider is the benefit of easy payment terms with a deposit required and the balance due on settlement. Security for deposits guaranteed as all deposits are held in trust. Lots at Amaroo on Karobean Drive and Jannali Court are currently selling off the plan and are under construction. Getting in early allows you to choose your perfect block from a range of properties within the development. You can grab the one with the best view, or that’s furthest from a busy street. You don’t usually have multiple options within the one specific location when buying an established property. Anticipated completion is January 2017. Pop into our land sales centre on Hastie Road. Open Tuesday to Saturday, from 10am to 3pm, or by appointment anytime. Contact Deb on 0409 321 000. visit www. amarooestate.com.au

They say don’t judge a book by its cover! This three bedroom timber home in the heart of Dimbulah may look like all the others on the outside, but inside has been tastefully renovated with modern touches. Double timber front doors open into a spacious open plan living and dining area complimented by beautiful polished timber floors. A brand new galley style kitchen with breakfast bar and new appliances has been installed and a smart air-conditioner keeps the living area cool in summer. If we could write a story, it would be the greatest ever told, Of a kind and loving Dad, who had a heart of gold. We could write a million pages, but still be unable to say, Just how much we love and miss him every single day. We will remember all he taught us, we are hurt but won’t be sad, Because he’ll send down the answers, and he’ll always be our Dad.

EXPRESS sPORT TWO archery young guns have shot their way to success after a stellar performance in the National Indoor Championships last Sunday. Held for the first time at Mareeba PCYC, local cub archers Neil Prince and Daley Taylor scored top three finishes in their respective categories. The championships are run all over Australia on the same day with scores correlated at the same time and electronically sent in to Archery Australia for tallying. Neil, 12, took second in the cub boys recurve category, while Daley, also 12, nabbed third in the compound class. Six competitors from the Tablelands and Mossman competed in Mareeba across multiple age groups. Each competitor shot two rounds of 60 arrows from a distance of 18m at a target 40cm wide. Tablelands Company of Archers secretary and championships judge Terrie Neilson said being able to secure an indoor venue allowed a level playing field with southern clubs after years of being forced to shoot outdoors. “For quite a few years we shot outdoors in the wind rain, so our archers had a disadvantage against the rest of Australia,” she said. “We wanted to compare our scores on an equal footing.” Archery coach George Neilson said competing in the championships gave young archers invaluable experience on a national level. “I know they’ve always got a chance, provided they focus,” he said.

Archers punch above weight in nationals

HOT SHOTS: Neil Prince and Daley Taylor did extremely well at Sunday’s National Indoor Championships.

Mareeba netballers mix it with the best at state champs THREE Mareeba representative Netball teams travelled to the Gold Coast during the last week of the school holidays to compete in the annual State Age Championships. The three day carnival was tough, but enjoyable for all the teams. Mareeba was represented in the U13’s U14’s and U15’s age groups. The under 13’s played great and developed new skills over the three days, the under 15’s played like champions and the under 14’s walked away runners up in their division. Mareeba Netball Association matches have resumed after the school holidays and officially kicked off this term at the new Bendigo Bank Sporting Precindt, at Davies Park on Saturday, July 16.

Junior Gators shine at prestigious cup The recent Gorden Tallis Cup in Townsville was filled with success stories. For the Mareeba Gladiators under 10’s team it was their first time at a carnival and the youngsters definitely made themselves known. The team won nearly all their games in the under 10 round robin competition making all the way to the semi’s of their group, after a last minute try in the quarter final. Run by the Townsville District Junior Rugby League, the Gorden Tallis Cup saw a staggering 64 teams compete on the weekend of July 2-3. It was a fantastic achievement for the Mareeba team and everyone should be congratulated for their fantastic efforts to give these children an opportunity to play the great game of rugby league in an excellent carnival.

EXPRESS sPORT Roosters winning streak continues

Roosters first grade player Nick Pattern.

Three tries to speedster Jacob Rivett highlighted the Atherton Roosters 34-12 win over Suburbs at Gordonvale’s Alley Park on Saturday night. It was another strong second half performance that gave the Roosters their six tries to two victory over Suburbs and secured the number three spot on the points ladder. The scores were locked at 12-all at halftime but it was the Roosters who powered ahead to deliver a further 22 unanswered points. Three try hero Jacob Rivett looked dangerous with every touch and posted two long-range solo efforts in finding the try line. Roosters coach Dean Howard said his side had improved in the second half to shake off the challenge presented by Suburbs. “We were sloppy in patches during the first 40 minutes and that allowed Suburbs to stay with us,” Howard said.

Under 18’s Tye Grogan.

“At halftime we addressed things the boys should improve on and how they needed to have better control of the game. “As a result, the second half was a lot better for us and we stuck to our game plan.” In Saturday’s reserve grade match, the Roosters had the score locked up at 16 all for the break before allowing Suburbs to push out to a late 40-26 victory. Three tries to under-18 winger Lazach Mow helped the young Roosters to a comfortable 34-12 win over Suburbs after leading 14-6 at halftime. This Saturday, Cairns District Rugby League premiership action returns to Roosters Stadium with the Atherton Roosters hosting Ivanhoes in three grades from 4pm. Ravenshoe will this Sunday host a country round of the Intrust Super Cup with the Northern Pride playing Redcliffe.

Queenslanders claim back origin title

CHAMPIONS: Qld captain Lee Liaver holds the state of origin shield with his team.

It was a battle of the states that did not disappoint. After NSW walked away champions in 2015, QLD set out from the start to make sure the shield did not leave the Mareeba Rodeo grouds on Saturday night. Not only can Queensland’s footballers get the better of their NSW counterparts, but so can the cowboys and cowgirls, with QLD victorius 30-27. Competitors from each state team matched up to compete in Bull Riding, Saddle Bronc, Bareback, Steer Wrestling and Barrel Racing.
