Hospital fears allayed New CHHHB Chair and ‘proud Tablelander’ Clive Skarott says nothing will change at Mareeba Hospital By Rebecca Wallis

Mareeba Heritage Museum volunteers Gail Campbell, Ellen Duff, Margaret Tabone and Mary Thompson are looking forward to celebrating Queensland Day this Saturday.

Celebrate Queenslander Day in the dark Celebrate being a proud Queenslander this weekend at the Mareeba Heritage Museum in one of only two Queensland Day events happening in the Far North. This Saturday, June 10, the museum will be alive with history and all things Queensland. Watch the entire museum come alive with blue lights and a single gun shot salute, reminiscent of the celebrations in 1859.

The ceremony will start at 6pm and includes a welcome to country, messages from dignitaries, the St Thomas’s and St Stephens combined school band, a single gun-shot salute, and the raising of flags. Later there will be food, fun for the kids and the museum will be open at night with free entry and tour guides in costume “The Heritage Museum is committed to deliver this event to foster com-

munity pride, celebrate community spirit and encourage Queenslanders to celebrate their way this Queensland Day. “What better way to celebrate what it means to be a Queenslander than to put our Mareeba Heritage Museum on show,” Manager Janet Greenwood said. For more information see Page 13, or visit www.mareebaheritagecentre. com.au

It’s not surprising that Mareeba Hospital is Clive Skarott’s number one priority as the new Chairman of the Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Board (CHHHB). Now Cairns-based, Mr Skarott classes himself as a ‘proud Tablelander’ having been born and raised in Atherton and spent some time at school in Mareeba. With rumours rife that the hospital will be closed or downgraded, Mr Skarott has wasted no time in looking into the issues there by making an unscheduled tour of the facility last weekend. “I thought given what I was hearing about Mareeba, I thought I’ve got to get up there and I went right through there and I spoke to

all the people that were on duty there and got their feedback,” said Mr Skarott. “And I’m going to be doing that with all the hospitals under our control simply because this is how you find out what is going on.” Before he was even inducted as the chairman of the board, Mr Skarott was keen to pass on the message that the hospital will remain open and fully-functioning. “The hospital will continue to operate in Mareeba and there will be no reduction in any of the services that are presently happening in Mareeba,” he told The Express on Friday. “There are no plans to change anything and there will be no downgrading of any services in Mareeba. Katrina won four bronze and two silver medals at the Masters Games in Cairns last month.

One step closer to being a swim icon By Rebecca Wallis Breaking down barriers one lap at a time, super swimmer Katrina Coffey has done it again by winning no less than six medals at the Great Barrier Reef Masters Games in Cairns last month. Despite having Down Syndrome, the 31 year old swam against able-bodied swimmers at the event on May 25-28 holding her own and scoring a personal best bringing her one step closer to her dream of competing at the Olympics. “I really want to be a swimming icon,” said Katrina who swims at Mareeba Pool with coach June Cotter eight or nine times

a week. “I love swimming because I love the feel of the water when you’re swimming, it’s relaxing, like meditation.” Katrina has been swimming competitively for 21 years. Last July she was selected to compete in Italy at the Trisom Games where she broke three Australian records in her category. Her coach June Cotter is one of her biggest inspirations and is hoping Katrina makes it to the 9th Down Syndrome World Swimming Championships in Canada in 2018. “She’s a beautiful swimmer,” said Mrs Cotter. “If she wants it enough and she keeps doing PBs, she can go all the way.

She’s just got to get faster. She’s doing really well. She is very committed.” But Katrina is not just happy to win a medal or ten, she also wants to be known as a swimming icon. Distantly related to country music mega star Slim Dusty, Katrina would like to emulate his success in the pool. “Being a paralympian, competing at the Olympics has always been my dream,” said Katrina, who works at St Vinnies in Mareeba. “I love the Olympics because it’s the biggest competition and if I got to go there I would be doing what I love.” Katrina is now focussed on the Melbourne leg of the Masters Games in September.

All services will remain Clive Skarott says locals need not fear the loss of any services at Mareeba Hospital, even after COAG funding runs out this year From P1

“We will be working actively with the North Queensland Primary Health Network to get up to date information about where we want to go in the future.” Conceding that he didn’t have jurisdiction over certain issues like the looming loss of COAG funding, he did say that he would push hard for further funding to be negotiated. “We don’t know what is going to be happening with the funding - this is a federal matter not a state matter but all I can say to you is the Mareeba Hospital won’t be disadvantaged by the loss of the COAG funding and that we will be continuing with the existing services as long as we can through negotiating for further funding going forward.” Although inexperienced in working in the health sector, Mr Skarott does have extensive understanding of public services having spent 28 years at the electricity board during which time he was the founding member of the electricity credit union before becoming the Chief Executive Officer for 20 years. Since retiring from those positions he has had a number of directorship positions for State Government and with James Cook University. During his time with Ergon he oversaw the collaboration of the Mareeba and Atherton depots and says he would like to see a similar collaboration between Mareeba and Atherton Hospitals. “What I will be looking for is some

major co-operation between Atherton and Mareeba together to get outcomes that are going to benefit the community as a whole,” he said. “I don’t see that we should have an Atherton thing or a Mareeba thing. I think that we will have both hospitals working together to have outcomes that are really good. Where I come from when I say that is that there is a great relationship between the Atherton depot of Ergon and the Mareeba depot of Ergon – they back each other up all the time. What I want to see going forward – and you’re only 25-30 minutes drive between the two centres – I want to see co-operation and working so that we get outcomes like Ergon Energy has at the present time. “ Mr Skarott claims he is ‘passionate’ about local communities and wants to engage with them as much as possible to

after. “I’ve organised this with Tom Gilmore, he’s offered us the council chambers board room for our July meeting,” he said. “That meeting will be followed by people being invited to come along and we will be talking to people in the

help eradicate any lingering issues and concerns. With that in mind he has arranged for the board’s July meeting to be held in Mareeba with a view to meeting members of the community

community about the health services and that type of thing.” With over 2000 signatures collected in the past week for a petition aimed at ‘saving’ the hospital, there are likely

“I wouldn’t have taken on this job if I didn’t think I could make a difference in the service going forward.” – Clive Skarott

to be more than a few people keen to meet the new members. “In going forward I will be going out into the community and meeting the local authorities, meeting with the mayors and having open sessions with the community to get some idea about what is happening and what people perceive is happening,” Mr Skarott said. “This week coming up we have our induction, Wednesday we have our board meeting and then I’m getting involved. I’ve organised a number of meetings in different organisations with different people. “ As for the shortage of doctors in our region, Mr Skarott is already putting the wheels in motion to try and bring more medical professionals here. “I have set up a meeting with one of the firms that engages with doctors to get them to come to regional Queensland. I have organised a meeting with them to see if they can get doctors to come up there. I am meeting with them

not just for Mareeba but because there are other specialists that we want to bring into our region.” Mr Skarott says that as Chair of the board he will be ensuring that people in rural communities ‘get the health service that they need close to their home’. “Let me assure you that if I think there is an opportunity being missed for any of our regional hospitals I will be pursuing it because the outcomes I want are positive outcomes for the communities,” he said. “If I get an understanding that we need to change some arrangement because it isn’t working then I will definitely be going in to bat for that community. And overall I’ll be going in to bat to ensure that all the services that are serviced by this hospital board will be looked after and bring it to the fore. And I’m quite passionate about I wouldn’t have taken on this job if I didn’t think I could make a difference in the service going forward.”

Mareeba farm wins Grower of the Year A Mareeba family, who only got into the mango industry 15 years ago, have been named as the 2017 Honey Gold Growers of the Year. Beating off stiff competition from 35 other producers, Sam and Kylie Collins had no prior mango experience before buying their farm Blushing Acres in 2002. “When we bought the property, we had several varieties of mangoes and avocados on it. We eventually replaced the other mangoes and now grow only Honey Gold and Calypso varieties, as well as avocados,” Mr Collins said. The family, including three children, relocated to North Queensland from Papua New Guinea where they had operated a mechanical workshop business for several years. Within a week of settling their licence agreement, they were top working existing trees and had to wait three years for the first fruit to arrive. Mr Collins said the award acknowledged their hard work and was a tremendous surprise. Blushing Acres has 1,500 Honey Gold trees in production and another 5,400 trees under cultivation and set to reach full production in 2020. Its mangoes are harvested between the end of December and early January. “All the stars aligned last season.

Sam and Kylie Collins with their award for 2017 Honey Gold Growers of the Year.

We had a good crop, we forcasted our crop, picked when we forecasted we would and packed to Piñata Farms’ specifications and requirements. Our family worked together as a team to do the best possible job that we could,” he said. Mr Collins said he believed the Mareeba climate was “the best in Australia” for growing mangoes

due to its nine-month dry spell from March to December. He also believed growing grass in the inter-rows, then using it to mulch under the trees, helped retain moisture during the dry period. The award was presented at the 12th annual Honey Gold Mango Congress held at Airlie Beach, North Queensland, earlier this month.

Graduates and organisers of the Growing Healthy Foods at the Doorstep program at the Mareeba International Club.

Gardening program a hit with indigenous men TWELVE indigenous men have been left with increased self-confidence, selfesteem and greater employment prospects thanks to a Mareeba program focused on sustainable gardening. Mulungu Aboriginal Corporation Primary Health Care Service partnered with Queensland Agricultural Training Colleges (QATC) to deliver the ‘Growing Healthy Foods at the Doorstep’ program for the first time. “We wanted to encourage change by engaging 12 indigenous men in an education pathway designed to build confidence and self-esteem, and boost employment prospects,” said Jermaine Herbohn, Male Project Officer. “Growing Healthy Foods at the Doorstep has equipped participants with the knowledge to undertake sustainable gardening at home, while developing

work-ready, practical skills in Rural Operations.” During the program, participants developed gardens at their own households. As part of this initiative we also began the process of establishing ‘community champions’ to assist participants with a good understanding about growing fresh produce for their families. The graduates were judged on Friday, June 2 at The Mareeba International Club where the overall winner was presented with their prize. Five of the participants also received their Cert III in Rural Operations. “Due to the positive results of this pilot program we intend to roll it out again, helping more local men undertake the same journey to boost skills, job outcomes and health,” said Mr Herbohn.

73 year old horse rider wins recognition award By Rebecca Wallis A 73-year-old Julatten horsewoman has won a National Masters Performance Award after being nominated by the Tablelands Dressage Club. Esther Brooks has been a member of the club since its inception in 2006 and has dedicated herself to it as a committee member, mentor and competitor. “I love being around horses,” said Esther who only began riding in the discipline of dressage when she turned 40. “There is nothing better than being in tune with a horse. I got a lot of help when I was younger and so because of that I give a lot back.” Esther said she was ‘surprised’ and humbled by the award. “I didn’t think there was a hope in hell I would win it because of all the football players out there etc,” she said. “And I just don’t think I deserve it. There must be people out there who are more deserving than me.” Her fellow club members whole-heartedly disageree. “Esther has consistently been on the club’s committee and is dedicated and always willing to assist in any way she can to ensure the discipline of dressage is maintained and encouraged in Far North Queensland,” said President of Atherton Tablelands District Dressage and Equestrian Association (ATDDEA) Margot Warner. Esther was shortlisted with four others from a huge number of entries and then it was left to an online voting system, in which the local and national equine community pulled together and voted for Esther. Organisers said she had amazing support and was an easy winner. “Esther professionally mentors and encourages all our club members (70 - 100 members), who admire and respect her skills as an elite dressage rider as well as her approach to horsemanship, of calm-

Local businesses urged to open doors for tourists THE Mareeba business community is being urged to open their doors to a new wave of tourists hitting the Tablelands. Tourism Tropical North Queensland CEO Alex de Waal said the opportunities were endless for local businesses, if they were willing to cater for a growing tourism market. “The core value of Tropical North Queensland as a destination is that it’s the best place in the world to engage with nature,” he said. “If you think about the attributes of this region and you think about the lakes, waterfalls and everything else that is available across the whole of the Tablelands, it’s so close to that alignment. “Add to the fact that this region is adjacent to Cairns, which is an access point to 3.9 million visitors, both domestic and international, and you’ve got a huge reservoir of demand sitting there already.” Mr de Waal said businesses who took the time to study their customer base, link in with local tourism operators and collaborate with service stations to become “advocates” for their business were just some of the ways to tap into the market. “You’ve got people who are innovative in the region and are fantastic entrepreneurs and you just need to collectively tap into those,” he said.

“What you’re getting at the moment is a few operators getting involved, but if you were to get the entire region to focus on delivering extraordinary guest experiences, you will get extraordinary outcomes. “You might have a fantastic product, but what are you doing as a region to promote all the things you have available here? Mr de Waal said the Tablelands had a unique range of products and experiences to offer tourists and the Mareeba business community should focus their energies on enhancing that rather than comparing themselves to other parts of the Far North.

By Rebecca Wallis As part of their term subject on journalism, year’s five and six at Dimbulah State School invited The Express in for a visit. Armed with some copies of the newspaper, I made my way

out to the school on Friday, June 2 to give a talk in becoming qualified in the industry and how to go about constructing a news story. The students came to the talk armed with some subjects they felt were hot topics in their area and therefore newsworthy. One

being the refurbishment of the fire station in town. Luckily the chief fire officer in Dimbulah is also the school’s groundsman, so after rounding him up for an impromptu meeting, the class got to see how an article is crafted from scratch.

Together we structured it with the most important facts at the top and discussed the sort of language that is commonly used in news writing. It was fantastic to see so many eager future journalists and help them bring a school topic to life.

By Years 5 & 6 Dimbulah State School The Dimbulah Fire Station on Raleigh Street is currently being upgraded. The current building is too out-

dated as it has not been renovated since it was built in 1970. The current upgrade is costing a staggering $750 000. The renovations started before Christmas and will be completed in approximately two more weeks.

Captain Ceasar Di Carlo said the clothing room and the engine room both needed to be updated. “We are a ten person crew,” said Captain Di Carlo. “The upgrade is to provide more equipment to better service the community.”

During the upgrade the Dimbulah Fire crew have still been operational from a different location. “We will be having an open day when we have settled in” said Captain Di Carlo. “Everyone will be invited.”

Knuth considers appeal against seat redistribution Member for Dalrymple Shane Knuth is refusing to rule in or out appealing last week’s final determination to remove the electorate of Dalrymple. The Queensland Redistribution Commission unveiled its redrawn electoral districts, almost a year since calling for public suggestions on the restructure. Now, there will be a three-week appeals process before the boundaries are fixed and they will come into effect when the writ is issued for the next state election. “We’re disappointed because there never needed to be massive changes like this,” Mr Knuth said. “We made a submission that suggested only minor adjustments to make the change needed; this destructive overhaul was completely unnecessary.” Mr Knuth said constituents could accept a politician being voted out of of-

fice, but were angered by someone being forced out through a redistribution. Under the changes, Dalrymple will be broken into three electorates – Traeger, Hill and Burdekin – costing residents vital political representation. The Charters Towers region will be absorbed into the supersized Traeger electorate, which is about double the size of the United Kingdom. Mr Knuth, along with an overwhelming number of constituents, said the seat would be unworkable and unmanageable. “The Member for Traegar will have the virtually impossible task of representing tens of thousands of people across a vast range of industries from the Northern Territory border to Paluma,” he said. However, he said he remained the Member for Dalrymple until the next election and would continue with business as usual.

ONSITE WELDING

The sale ends this Saturday, June 10, at 12noon, so make sure you step into the Graeme Shoe Store at 127-129 Byrnes Street, Mareeba.

Bendigo staff dress up to highlight equipment finance Staff at the Mareeba Branch of Bendigo Community Bank had a dress up day last Thursday, June 1 to promote equipment finance. Staff members dressed as different occupations as a fun way of highlighting the importance of understanding the ins and outs of equipment finance. Bendigo Bank Branch Manager, Stephen Gear said that Bendigo Bank’s Equipment Finance products support Businesses who are looking to upgrade equipment without impacting working capital. “There are different options for funding that transaction, including finance lease, asset purchase or equipment loan, and consideration needs to be given to delivering the best benefit for the business.” It can make all the difference to your

Atherton parks and nursery upgrade Thanks to funding provided through the Works for Queensland program, upgrades and rehabilitation improvements have been undertaken at Winfield Park Revegetation Nursery and Lakeside Rainforest Park with local workers gaining valuable hands on experience. es, lifting bench heights and improving drainage. Overall, the result will create a safer working environment and reduce the habitat for weeds and pathogens of the Nursery stock. A number of casual positions are also helping to revitalize the Lakeside Rainforest Park with over 100 bags of Cobbler’s Pegs and other weeds removed from the site prior to mulching to suppress weed growth. Disposable overalls were worn to

reduce the risk of transporting weed seeds off-site. Further work will be conducted to treat invasive weeds that threaten the function and development of the remnant Mabi rainforest and the revegetation plantings that enhance it. “We appreciate this funding which is enabling us to engage local contractors to deliver much needed improvements,” said Mayor Paronella.

Local news back in the agenda at Channel 9 AFTER Win and Channel 9 went their separate ways last year, local news has been alarmingly absent from Channel 9’s news bulletins. But that is all about to change thanks to a series of new regional bulletins being rolled out along the east coast. Far North Queensland will be the first to launch on July 10. The launch is one of the biggest roll-outs of news the country has seen. “For the last year we haven’t been able to cover local news in those areas. And when you want to provide the best news service in the State, it makes it quite difficult,” said Channel 9’s Samantha Heathwood (pictured) who will be at the helm presenting alongside Vanessa O’Hanlon.

Born in Toowoomba, Samantha said her heart is in the Far North and that she is passionate about providing local news. “Regional communities are the fabric of the country,” she said. “I grew up in a regional community so I know that people want to know what’s going in their back yard. This is going to give people a really concise way of getting their daily news.” Samantha is a former reporter and producer for Channel 9 and Win television. She is a mother of two small children. She will be presenting the news at 6pm weekdays on Channel 9 from July 10. The localised bulletin will compile local stories, dedicated local sport and weather reports, together

with national and international coverage. The Far North Queensland bulletin will span from Cairns, Port Douglas to Tully and surrounding areas.

Students get real life sign language demonstration Year 6 students at Mareeba State School were thrilled to put their Australian Sign Language (AUSLAN) skills into practice when two members of the deaf community paid them a visit recently. The guests, Barry Lyne and Bruna De Lai, gave the students a rare insight into the life of a deaf person.

“This visit was a really fantastic opportunity that allowed students to practice their Auslan and also see others communicating using only Auslan,” said LOTE teacher Kirsty Stone. The students were given the opportunity to ask both of them questions using Auslan and see people

communicating using Auslan in a real life scenario. The opportunity made it more real to the students and they were able to apply their knowledge of what they had learnt. “We are very thankful that Barry and Bruna were able to visit us and look forward to more visits in the future,” said Ms Stone.

3D view of Burke Developmental Road ahead of renovations Some sections of the Burke Developmental Road are being updated and redesigned using state-of-the-art technology. The Aurecon Cairns team is commissioned by the Department of Transport and Main Roads to design about 7km of the remaining gravel road sections, not only to seal them but to optimise the road geometry to meet current standards and improve safety for the road users. For the first time a team has undertaken aerial 3D surveys and created digital terrain models as a basis for the design of the section between Almaden and Chillagoe. Part of the design process is a complete 3D mapping of the

road with RPAS (Remotely piloted aircraft systems / drones) which helps the Aurecon design team to assess environmental issues, drainage paths or to optimise earthworks. This technology becomes more and more important in different industries such as agriculture or mining and Aurecon is pioneering it since many years in the consultancy industry. One of the early larger scale uses was in 2011 after the earthquake in Christchurch where Aurecon teams used drones to undertake emergency engineering assessments in areas which were not yet accessible by rescue teams or considered too dangerous to send people in.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Goodbye Dalrymple, hello Hill At last the Qld Electoral Commission has abolished the ridiculous grouping of communities formerly known as the electorate of Dalrymple. Stretching almost a thousand kilometres from north to south with vastly different industries, interests and problems, it was always going to be a barrier to effective representation of our interests in Government. Added to our problems with the electorate, we have been further handicapped by a long period of minor party representation which has failed to deliver real benefits for our region even when presented with so called “balance of power” opportunities in Parliament. Now we have the new electorate of Hill which is based on a more compact and sensible grouping of communities, industries and interests, we have a rare opportunity to inject new blood and boost the effectiveness of our political presence in the Queensland Parliament. The current member for Dalrymple is yet to make up his mind whether to appeal to try and keep his old electorate or to decamp from Charters Towers and parachute into the contest for

Hill. While he dithers, other parties are selecting candidates and gearing up for a tough contest. It will take more than a sudden interest in crocodiles and forgotten roads to win over the electors in Hill. They will be looking for a representative who knows from experience what it takes to succeed in business, deliver services and connect at grass roots level with the many and varied interest groups in the new electorate. With a new electorate and new representation I am confident we can look forward to a better deal from Government in the future than we’ve had during the many lost years spent in Dalrymple. Similiar NBN problems I can sympathize with Glenys Pilat and her NBN problems. I went through all that myself and ended up getting Ombudsman involved and this was then resolved within a few weeks. Palliative Care Week

It really is difficult to figure out the motives of some of our “environmentalists”. Fruit bats are famous for rainforest seed dispersal. Logically, town- and farm-dwelling bats will be delivering non-native seeds when they do visit the rainforests. Proper protection for rainforests should involve expelling bats from towns and farms. But “environmentalists” can’t see that. Crocodiles are an apex predator whose populations have been held in check by humans on this continent for around 40,000 years. Recently we stopped doing that. Consequently their populations are exploding and all other species are at risk, not just us. But “environmentalists” can’t see that. Coral reefs are the ultimate changing-climate survivor, having been around for 400 million years of ever-changing climate. Their ability to “bleach”, to expel and replace symbionts, is an evolutionary superpower that makes them nearimpossible to kill. But “environmentalists” can’t see that. Of course, there’s none so blind as those who choose not to see. Peter Campion, Tolga

May 21-28, marked National Palliative Care Week. In 2017, the theme stood strong: you matter, your care matters: palliative care can make a difference. National Palliative Care Week is an important opportunity for us to start a community conversation about death and dying, so that those who are affected by life-limiting illness can feel comfortable and confident in seeking the support they need. Australia’s ageing and increasing population, along with a rise in chronic disease, has increased the number of patients requiring palliative care – and this number will continue to grow. Last week, the AIHW released new data showing hospitalisations for palliative care are growing faster than all hospitalisations recorded in Australia. We’re urging any Queenslander affected by a life-limiting illness to call on professional support via the PalAssist helpline, or at palassist.org.au. Cancer Council Queensland CEO Ms Chris McMillan

Congratulations to the organisers and supporters of the Rotary FNQ Field Days. This years event was easily the best held so far. Mareeba Lions were once again able to assist the Cycle for Hope with smoko as riders passed through Mareeba on their way to Port Douglas. The ride raises awareness and funds for school chaplaincy in the local area. Mareeba Lions have a busy schedule with the MSF Sugar Metrogaine, the Cairns to Karumba Bike Ride, and Christmas in July all nearly upon us. Everyone is invited to participate in the MSF Sugar Metrogaine which is a local event hosted by Mareeba Lions and Lioness to raise awareness and funds for the Australian Lions Childhood Cancer Research Foundation. Every year in Australia 800 children are diagnosed with childhood cancer. 20% of those children do not survive their battle. Over the years the Australian Lions Childhood Cancer Research Foundation has raised over $10 million dollars for childhood cancer research – and has supported countless Australian organisations leading the fight against childhood cancer. Lions believe that every child deserves a chance at a healthy life and every parent deserves to watch their child grow up. That’s why Lions are committed to a goal of helping create a 100% survival rate for children with cancer. Hundreds of Australian children with high-risk cancer will have access to new genome sequencing technologies that could guide their treatment, following the announcement of substantial Lions

Club funding for the Lions Kids Cancer Genome Project – an important new component of the Zero Childhood Cancer Program for diagnosis and treatment of childhood cancer. The Project is supported by the Lions Club International Foundation (LCIF) and by the Australian Lions Childhood Cancer Research Foundation (ALCCRF). Together, the two organisations are contributing AU$3.2 million – one of the largest single philanthropic gifts for children’s cancer in Australia – with a commitment from ALCCRF to raise an additional AU$0.8 million over the next three 3 years. The Lions Kids Cancer Genome Project is a collaborative partnership, bringing together Australia’s national personalised medicine program in childhood cancer – the Zero Childhood Cancer Program, led by Children’s Cancer Institute and the Kids Cancer Centre, Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick – and state-of-the-art capability in whole genome sequencing and analysis at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research. In its first three years, the Project will provide whole genome sequencing and analysis for 400 children with high-risk cancer in Australia who will be enrolled in the Zero Childhood Cancer Program – one of the most detailed genetic and biological analyses of a child’s cancer globally to date. Whole genome sequencing will take place following diagnosis or relapse of cancers with the poorest prognoses, such as brain tumours. Electricity price hike bad management The Queensland Electricity Users Network (QEUN) views the intervention by the Queensland Government in the 2017-18 regulated retail electricity prices for regional Queensland as the act of a wolf in sheep’s clothing. Less than two hours after the Queensland Competition Authority released its power bill increases of 7.1 % for households and 8.2 % for small businesses, the Queensland Government intervened and authorised increases of 3.3 % for households and 4.1 % for small business. Coordinator of the QEUN Jennifer Brownie said the Queensland Government had tried to paint itself as a knight in shining armour when in reality it was their management of Queensland Government owned electricity assets that is driving power bills up again. The Queensland Competition Authority blamed substantial increases in wholesale energy costs as the primary factor contributing to increases in excess of 7 % in regional power bills. The Queensland Government owns 65 % of the generation capacity in Queensland. Wholesale generation accounts for about 25 % of a power bill. The average wholesale electricity price in Queensland has risen to $94.64 per MWh so far in 2017, an increase of 58 % on last year. This means an increase of 58% in 25% of a power bill. In addition to owning 65% of the generation capacity, the Queensland Government also owns 100% of the transmission and distribution (poles and wires) network and 100% of the only retailer to residential and small business customers in regional Queensland. “Instead of charging no more than necessary for the essential service of electricity the Queensland Government is using power bills as a hidden tax. They know homes and businesses can’t function without electricity,” Ms Brownie said. “The increase in power bills is putting a brake on the economy of regional Queensland,“ Ms Brownie said.

New entertaining comedy hits the big screen

Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea Friday June 2, at Vincenzo’s Coffee Lounge

New on screen is an entertaining comedy crime caper, which starts at the The Rising Sun this Thursday. Three Oscar winning top stars, Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman and Alan Arkin star in GOING IN STYLE. There's great acting and an amusing story as well. Anne Margaret and Matt Dilon are also part of this caper in which three old fellows get back at the bank responsible for their financial problems. WONDER WOMAN, starring Gal Gadot, David Thewlis and Robin Wright, runs for another super week and THE PIRATES OF THE CARRIBEAN - DEAD MEN TELL NO TALES continues for its last week.

GOING IN STYLE

WONDER WOMAN

Three seniors, who are living social security check to check and even reduced to eating dog food at times, decide they have had enough. So, they plan to rob a bank...problem is, they don't even know how to handle a gun! A social commentary on growing old in America and what we are sometimes driven to, due to circumstances.

Before she was Wonder Woman, she was Diana, princess of the Amazons, trained to be an unconquerable warrior. Raised on a sheltered island paradise, when an American pilot crashes on their shores and tells of a massive conflict raging in the outside world, Diana leaves her home, convinced she can stop the threat. Fighting alongside man in a war to end all wars, Diana will discover her full powers and her true destiny.

God’s Garden God looked around His garden And found an empty place, He then looked down upon the earth And saw your tired face. He put his arms around you And lifted you to rest, God’s garden must be beautiful He always takes the best. He knew that you were suffering He knew you were in pain, He knew that you would never Get well on earth again. He saw the road was getting rough And the hills were hard to climb, So he closed your weary eyelids And whispered “Peace be Thine.” It broke our heart to lose you, But you did not go alone, For part of us went with you The day God called you home. In our hearts he will always be cherished and loved. Ivanka, Emma, Eddie, Celeste, Xenia, Zanthe and Morena.

Regional carnival success THE Fowlers Marlin Coast Regional Club Carnival was held in Mareeba over the weekend. 49 teams of junior and senior players from Port Douglas to Tully and across the Tablelands, all took part in the first major carnival held at the Bendigo Bank Recreational Precinct.

Atherton Turf Club celebrates 70 years The threat of rain did nothing to dampen the spirits of racegoers at Morrow Park, Tolga on Saturday. Punters and ladies dressed in their finest rocked up for the special celebratory event. 70 years ago the first race meeting was held on the course and in honour of the 1947 meet, visitors were asked to come dressed in 40s style fashion. Tablelands Regional Councillor Bronwyn Voyce dished out the prizes and congratulated the winners, while Mayor Joe Paronella took to the microphone to entertain the crowd with some musical renditions in between races. A huge cake was made for the anniversary with everyone invited to take some.

Shooters success at championship

At the end of round one, the Gladiators are sitting comfortably in third place on the CDRL ladder after their win against Suburbs on the weekend. Played on a Friday night, due to what coach Tye Ingebrigtsen says is a shortage of refs in the Cairns league, the team were back on home ground and came out flying. “We played really well in the first half,” said Ingebrigtsen. “By half time it was 28-0. “Second half we slacked off a lot, but luckily we’d done enough in the first half to secure the win.”

seven members of the Dimbulah Sports and Pistol Club (pictured) attended the ‘Northern Regions Pistol Shooting’ championship at the Burdekin Pistol Club, in Ayr. Held over the May Day long weekend, there were 45 shooters from all clubs north of Bowen including Mt Isa, with 12 events shot in total across all grades. The Dimbulah members were successful in achieving 16 medals in total across all events and grades. Nick Trabant was the out right winner for the Northern Regions 10m Men’s Air Pistol, and Hillary O’Brien was outright Winner for the Northers Regions 25m Standard Pistol – a great weekend for a small club. Members plan to be back again next year to fly the flag for Dimbulah.

The final tally was 40-10 in the A grade game. Reserve Grade also won 28 to 22. Sonny Kerr was the most outstanding player for the night being awarded Player of the Match with coach Ingebrigtsen also praising Henare Maeva. “He came off the bench and just got stuck in,” he said. “He did a brilliant job of lifting everyone’s mood.” Now into the start of round two, the Gladiators are back playing long term rivals the Atherton Roosters this Saturday. It’s an important game for the team.

Roosters Jack Willis in Saturday’s match against Innisfail.

“If we win this we get to bring home the Tableland Cup,” said Ingebrigtsen. “The Roosters won it last year so we’re keen to bring it back to Mareeba.” In the first game of the season, Mareeba beat the Roosters and coach Ingebrigtsen is reasonably confident going into Saturday night’s game. “We’re fairly confident but have got a few injuries this week,” he said. The Roosters are sitting in 10th place on the ladder currently. The main game kicks off at 7pm at Roosters Stadium, with the reserves at 5.30pm.

Mistakes costs Roosters win The Atherton Roosters blew an early 4-0 lead in their away match to fall 38-4 to the Innisfail Leprechauns on Saturday night. After a promising start, the Roosters were right in the game trailing 6-4 at the break, but seemed to switch off for the second half. Mistakes from the Roosters gave the ladder leading Leprechauns a lot of opportunies and they punished the Roosters who came away with another high error count. Roosters coach Dean Howard said his side had every chance of an upset at the break, but poor ball control allowed Innisfail to deliver six unanswered tries. “We were handing the ball over on the first couple of tackles and their big forwards really got a roll on,” Howard said. “In the end we just used all our energy in defence and they handled the wet conditions a lot better.” In reserve grade, the Roosters and Innisfail played a 22-all draw, while Innisfail won the under 19 match 56-12. This Saturday the Roosters host Mareeba at Atherton’s Roosters Stadium.

Two day show horse comp This weekend horse riders from across the Tablelands will head to Kerribee Park in Mareeba for two days of show horse competitions. The Mareeba and Tropical All Breeds Horse Show is an annual event that entices riders and horses of all levels to dust off their best gear and have a go. Kicking off on Saturday, June 10, there are classes for large breeds, ponies, little kids, show jumpers, western riders and a massive selection of breed classes. There’s also a cutting arena with ranch sorting and western hunter classes. The two day event is a great day out for horse owners as there are loads of prizes up for grabs. Ravenshoe bullrider Rohan Markham is hoping to be back for the PBR event in Cairns next month.

Local rider hopeful of PBR return After being stomped on by a bull sustaining a split liver just a few weeks ago, 26-year-old Ravenshoe bullrider Rohan Markham still hoping to be back on form at the Professional Bull Rider’s (PBR) Cairns Invitational next month. Markham was riding at the Rockhampton PBR on May 20 when the bull he was riding made an ungainly exit. It’s unclear whether he will be back to full fitness in time for the Cairns event on July 8, but chances are he will ride anyway. “I can’t wait to buck it out in front of a home crowd at the Cairns PBR. It’s my most anticipated ride of the year. I want to make my family and friends proud,” he said. Markham first jumped on a bull seven years ago at the Laura Rodeo after being unknowingly nominated by his mates. It was a decision he regards as one of his best, bull

riding is now what he lives for. “I used to watch my cousins bucking it out, and I thought they were all mad, but once I got my butt on a bull I understood why they loved it so much. You could say I’m addicted to the adrenaline rush of it now.” Says Markham. Having toured with the PBR for the past 3 years, Markham has shown his worth and stays steady in his achievements by consistently remaining amongst the cream of the crop. A recent 3-month PBR tour in the U.S has been the highlight of his bull-riding career. He’s said to be the dark horse of the competition, and certainly one to watch. The event will be held at the Cairns Convention Centre. Tickets are now on sale via www.ticketek. com.au or www.pbraustralia.com. au

Bulls fine form continues with 6-0 win

The FNQ Football premier league race is as tight as it has been in years with only four points separating first to fifth, and the Bulls are right in the thick of things sitting second on 16 points. The Bulls are only one point adrift of leaders Stratford and one point clear of third placed Innisfail. The Bulls took advantage of the Stratford Dolphins draw with Southside Comets on Saturday night to close the gap with an emphatic 6-0 win over the Edge Hill Tigers at Tiger park on Sunday. Traditionally a tough place to go on a Sunday afternoon, the Bulls came out firing to squash any hope of a upset going 3-0 up in the first twenty minutes. Youi Sato opened the scoring in the 9th minute, followed by Steven Cater and David Ruiz in the 16th and 19th minutes respectively. The Bulls were then a victim of their own success, taking their foot off the peddle allowing the homeside to have some joy for the next twenty minutes, until Ben Stabile slammed home a shot in the 40th minute to charge over any ability the Tigers had of clawing their way back. The second half witnessed the Bulls dominating proceedings with Paul Ruiz and Robert Pendenza scoring two more with the match finishing 6-0 to Mareeba. The Bulls reserves looked home at 3-0 with only 15 minutes to play,

but the match ended in a 3-all draw with the Tigers scoring the equaliser in the 91st minute. On Friday night the Bulls 2nd division sides enjoyed two big wins. The 2nd division Orange came away with a hard fought 2-1 win over Tableland rivals, the Atherton Eagles, with Kane Alderton and Anthony Mete scoring for the Bulls in an important three point win against one of the title challengers . The 2nd division Black recorded a impressive 9-1 win, with Michael

Curcio and Mattew Trotter scoring hat tricks and Jim Hatchman, Rhys Pozzebon and RJ Leporati scoring one each. The Bulls premier ladies side played last Thursday night against the Tigers, and again showed the ability to match one of the powerhouses of FNQ Football, but ultimately went down 3-0. All sides return home this weekend, with two 2nd division matches on Friday night and the three premier sides at home on Saturday.
