Kuranda girl in Miss World final

22-year-old Kuranda uni student Laura Woodcock said she never thought she would have the opportunity to compete in Miss World Australia, but next week she will be doing just that when she flies to Melbourne for the final of the beauty contest.

Laura began modelling at 15 when she entered the Face of Cairns Central competition and was spot-

studying at James Cook University full time.

“I was not expecting it whatsoever. I was really stunned when they called my name out.”

Born in Mareeba Hospital, Laura has lived in the same house in Kuranda her whole life.

“I never thought I would have the opportunity to do Miss World Australia.

“I was really lucky,” said Laura, who works part time at Trinity Beach State School as an out of hours school care officer while

Laura said she particularly loves the ethos behind Miss World Australia, which heavily focuses on raising money for charity.

“I really love this competition because it's different – it's beauty with a purpose. For weeks and months we've been fundraising money for The Children’s Charity which is the core of Miss World Australia – it's helping those in need. I really love that motto. It’s really giving back to the community, it's not just about competing in the competition.”

Laura said competition between the girls is friendly and encouraging and that she is excited to stand alongside the other state finalists from around the country.

“Your nerves kick in when you're in the room and you're looking at how many amazing women you're competing against and every single one of them is deserving of the crown,” she said.

“They're all achieving goals and accomplishments and aspiring to be so many incredible things. The competition is friendly, we're all there for the same thing - but there are so many incredible, beautiful and talented girls that will be there so it will be good.”

The Mareeba Wastewater Treatment Plant Upgrade will be officially opened later this month.

The Mareeba Wastewater Treatment Plant Upgrade project is funded through a $6 million grant from the Australian Government’s National Stronger Regions Fund, a $1.5 million grant from the Queensland Government’s

The upgraded Wastewater Treatment Plant will provide for the current population and into the future whilst also providing significant environmental benefits for the receiving waters of Two Mile Creek; a tributary of the Mitchell catchment.

Mareeba Shire Council is preparing to undertake infrastructure works along Rob Veivers Drive, Kuranda commencing Monday 3 July 2017 to Friday 6 October 2017, weather permitting.

Key activities being undertaken are: Replacement of approx. 800m of water main and Road widening of approx. 400m.

Works will commence on the replacement of the water main followed by the road widening works.

During this period motorists are advised of planned disruptions to traffic flow which will be managed under traffic control. Short delays may be experienced during these works, please allow extra time for travel.

Crippling power prices

Mareeba businesses are being encouraged to participate in a survey to estimate how much of an impact their power bills are having on the local economy.

From July 1 electricity costs rose by five per cent - a crippling increase on top of already unaffordable prices for many small businesses and residents says Jennifer Brownie, coordi-

nator of the Queensland Electricity Users Network (QEUN) .

“Nobody is talking for us,” she says. “They’re not doing anything for us and what we believe will start to happen in 6-8 months time, if we don’t address it, is regional jobs are going to go.”

Ms Brownie says that large businesses and those people on low incomes are looked after by the government with grants and re-

Thankfully, they listened and last week the information pertaining to the town’s balmy climate and all-year-round sunshine, was reinstated, much to everyone’s delight.

Now everyone driving into Mareeba knows how lucky we are to live here.

Mareeba is the first town to pilot the online survey which will eventually be distributed throughout the rest of regional Australia.

“From this survey we will be able to find out which industries are really struggling, because what we want to be able to do is change the tariffs. The tariffs are wrong,” says Ms Brownie.

“They need a complete overhaul. And so I will be going back with this information and saying ‘here’s the industry - this is the tariffs they’re on and this is what they’re saying’. So clearly the tariffs you have are not working and we need to change them yesterday.”

The QEUN is a non-political group supported by local government, Chambers of Commerce, economic development organi-

sations and power users including retirees, farmers and employers. The results of the survey will be taken to parliamentarians - both in government and the shadow cabinet, with submissions for change.

One of the submissions includes the traffic light system, which allows electricity users to foresee when the grid is going to become overloaded and avoid using power so that it does not lead to a future

increase of prices.

“AEMO (Australian Energy Market Operator) said providing everything goes right we will make it through summer – but I’m not waiting for that,” said Ms Brownie.

“I think they need a plan B and there are some simple solutions.

“When the power went out in South Australia the South Australian Chamber of commerce did a survey – they reckoned it cost

$130,000 a minute at a cost to the economy and that was at the end of the working day.”

An innovative Kuranda company has been recruited by Tablelands Regional Council to eradicate a nuisance weed spreading across the Tablelands using an organic and chemical free system.

Native to tropical Africa, Navua sedge is a vigorous, grass-like, perennial plant that was first found growing on Cairns footpaths in 1979.

The plant thrives in high rainfall areas or where water persists in the

landscape such as drains and natural water ways, which are environmentally sensitive and unsuitable for herbicide use.

Blue Hand Steam uses saturated steam to eradicate the weeds and is completely organic and chemical free.

“Two of the new nozzles that Kinan Limberg developed have spikes to penetrate the ground and deliver rhizome destroying steam into the ground while another nozzle treats

the above ground plant with steam temperatures up to 110°C,” explained Mayor Joe Paronella who met with Blue Hand Steam creators recently.

A pilot program using Blue Hand Steam products will involve five days of treatment, across selected infested sites at Millaa Millaa, with subsequent steam applications occurring every two weeks.

Blue Hand Steam will provide a report on the treatment and outcomes of

the pilot program to Council for consideration.

“Reducing the detrimental impacts of Navua Sedge in our region is a very high priority for us and we are excited to see how successful this new treatment option is,” said the Mayor.

The pilot program is made possible with funds provided by the Queensland Government through the Works for Queensland Program.

IT was celebrations all round for Mareeba Rotary at their annual changeover, held at the Mareeba Turf Club on Saturday.

The club farewelled 2016-17 president Stephen Gear and welcomed in new 2017-18 president, local Chiropractor Matt Jacob.

Stephen Gear reflected on a big and successful year for the local organisation and thanked all the hard working Rotarians for their tireless efforts, especially with the 2017 Rotary FNQ Field Days.

New president Matt Jacob welcomed in his directors for the year ahead which includes; Vice President and youth services Lenore Wyatt, Secretary David Kempton, Treasurer Stephen Gear, Membership and Club Trainer Joe Moro, Public Relations Natasha Srhoj, Administration Bronwyn Dwyer, Rorary Foundation Nina Grant, Community Services Kevin Davies and President Elect Margaret Schweiger.

In his welcoming address, President Matt Jacob thanked Stephen and his team for an outstanding Rotary year, while outlining his vision for the club.

“It is that sense of fellowship, trust and mutual drive to make a difference in our community that has not only kept me in Rotary, but has inspired me to lead Rotary this year,” said Mr Jacob.

“This is my vision for the club – To create a signature project for Mareeba Rotary, to work closely with other Rotary Clubs on mutual projects, improve the health, both physical and mental, of our community and to engage with those in our community who are taking the world by storm through innovative business.”

‘The time for talk is over’

Shane Knuth fired up after Kuranda Range Road is closed after accident Member for Dalrymple Shane Knuth has called on the Government to stump up the cash to fix the Kuranda Range Road after a semi-trailer and van collision caused the route to be closed off for 10 hours.

The semi-trailer had to be winched off the embankment which caused severe delays to Tablelanders travelling too and from Cairns.

Mr Knuth said just a fraction of the State Government’s commitment of $5.4 billion to build Brisbane’s Cross River Rail could cover the necessary upgrades to the Range.

“You could upgrade Kuranda Range ten times over with that money,” he said.

“The road is a vital link between Cairns and the Atherton Tablelands used by thousands of cars every day and it’s ludicrous that locals, tourists and key in-

dustries have suffered huge delays and setbacks for years but nothing has been done.”

Mr Knuth said the road needed to be widened, sharp corners straightened, slippery surfaces fixed and road condition signage erected, “I have driven on this road many times and the hazards are incredible; we need to be doing everything we can to prevent road fatalities and this is a clear hot spot needing immediate attention,” he said.

Kuranda Range Road is a popular route and contributes to billions of dollars to the economy.

“This part of the world is a farming hub and this road is the highway to the Gulf for the cattle and agriculture industries - if it shuts down, we can see a devastating chain reaction,” Mr Knuth said.

Member for Dalrymple Shane Knuth said he will be taking the fight to upgrade the Kuranda Range Road to parliament.

The town of Chillagoe 144km west of Mareeba has seen the sharpest rise in population growth on the Tablelands over the past four years with a 30 per cent increase in residents thanks to the nearby mine.

Chamber of Commerce president Andy Nelson said that nearby Auctus Resources went from flying their workers in and out to basing them in the town. A move which saw the town jump from 192 people in 2011, to 251 people in 2016.

“There’s a lot of people renting properties there now,” he said.

Mr Nelson said that with the up-coming launch of Mt Lucy mine and a new road base crushing operation at Nolans Creek, that the town is likely to continue to expand.

“It’s a great place to live,” he said. “It’s relaxed – there’s no roundabouts or traffic. There’s not a lot to do here but it’s very laid back.”

Last year’s census – which was just released – also showed significant growth in some other Tablelands towns such as Tolga which has expanded by 12 per cent in the past four years, as well as Cooktown which also increased its

population by 12 per cent.

Yungaburra experienced a population boom of 11 per cent while major Tablelands town Mareeba also boomed in the past four years with an increase of 898 people, or 8.8 per cent.

But for Dimbulah the figures show a significantly different story with a drop in population by 25 per cent. 364 people left the small town over the past four years dropping their population from 1414 people down to 1050. Southern Tablelands town Herberton’s number of residents also dropped by 8.4 per cent, as did the Kuranda population which lost 1.3 per cent of its people since 2011.

In response to Gaye Taylor’s letter in The Express June 28 2017. I would like her to focus her mind back a few years and remember how I stood beside her and a few other local citizens of the Dimbulah community at a joint Federal Senate inquiry held at the Cairns City Council to put a strong case forward for the upgrade of the reticulated water system in Dimbulah which at the time had very poor pressure and volume and on most occasions was discoloured for long periods of the year.

As a result of our strong message to the Federal Senate inquiry team and support from the Mareeba Shire Council at the time Dimbulah now has a reticulated water supply that is equal to the best of any similar sized community in Queensland.

As a gesture of good faith I would now like Ms Taylor to utilise all her energies and support Dimbulah’s big sister community of Mareeba to Save Mareeba Hospital Services and not listen to bureaucratic BS. Denis McKinley MAREEBA

In last Friday’s Cairns Post, the Member for Barron River stated that while the lengthy (and frequent) closure of the road between Smithfield and Kuranda caused some people some problems, he believes that the Smithfield bypass and the Cairns North bottleneck are much higher priorities.

I wonder if he understands that the road to Kuranda from Smithfield is actually on a quite steep range and when an accident happens it can be a very difficult operation to retrieve the vehicles, evacuate the injured, and get the road back into a safe state for traffic to flow safely?

It is far easier to carry out an operation like this after an accident on the Smithfield roundabout or at the airport turnoff as both of these places are on flat, straight pieces of road.

I have lived in this area for a very long time and have never heard of any section of the road infrastructure around Cairns ever being closed for long periods of time, with the exception of the times when flooding occurs.

Where are we heading?

As a former councillor for twelve years in the Atherton and TRC Shire I am very concerned for the future of Atherton and surrounding towns.

I think in the past people came here for our beautiful tree lined streets and scenery, cheap rates and houses, and a relaxed way of life that was affordable.

The current council in the lack of foresight has cut down all the trees in the Malanda Show Grounds.

I know camphor laurel trees are not the best trees, but they have been there a long time and they were not rotten.

It will take about 20 years for new trees to replace them.

It is rumoured that the 80 – 100 year old magnificent gum trees at the Atherton Show Grounds are next.

These trees are healthy and have been pruned for safety. If this is true, the council should cut down all the trees in all their parks.

This will definitely not attract visitors to our area.

By making people pay for every drop of water, a lot of rate payers will not be able

to afford a garden and we will have a brown town as a result.

So let’s forget about a town with good gardens, cancel the annual garden competition, there won’t be enough good gardens to judge.

On top of that putting up the rates by a ridiculous 4.4%, mostly double that of most northern shires, I am sure it will no attract new residents.

One small farmer I spoke to recently told me their rates will rise by $2,000.00 this year.

It has also come to my attention that the council has offered local developers a 2,000 square metre block of land near a local supermarket, for a very low price when the said land is valued between, $200,000 and $250,000.

The council does not own this land, the rate payer does. And the rate payer should be getting at least what the current market value of the land is. The shire needs that money; we should be getting as much for it as we can.

In conclusion, I ask the local council who is going to come here to invest with half the shops empty, the rates

astronomically high, all the trees being cut down, pay for every drop of water.

Denise and I will certainly not be doing any more investing in Atherton. It may

pay to look next door to see how to run a shire. Mareeba is going gangbusters.

Hansen Ford celebrates 40th year in business Graeme Ford is celebrating 40 years as Dealer Principal at Hansen Ford in Mareeba this year and wow, how things have changed in that time.

“I would like this opportunity to congratulate you and the dealership team on this milestone and thank you for your ongoing service to Ford in the Mareeba PMA,” said Northern Region Regional Manager Stuart Jessup in light of the milestone.

“One behalf of the company and the Northern Region team I extend our thanks to you for your and the dealership’s ongoing involvement with the Ford brand.”

The business was originally owned by Percy Hansen who first established a tyre selling business in Herberton Street before opening a ‘vehicle retail outlet’ in Mareeba on behalf of the Ford Motor Company called Mareeba Motors.

At the time the company also had branches in Atherton and Malanda. As development of the area grew in the late 1960s and

1970s, Mareeba Motors became known as Hansen Ford and centred its attention on the town of Mareeba.

Graeme Ford started working for Ford Motor Company in 1963 as a mail assistant and at 22 became the country’s youngest regional sales manager.

He moved to Mareeba in 1975.

After two years as manager of Hansen Ford, Graeme and his wife Sue bought the business on April 16, 1977. Percy Hansen was retiring.

“I am confident that my decision to settle in Mareeba will result in lasting friendships with the people of the area, both businesswise and socially,’ wrote Graeme in a local newspaper ad.

In 1989 Mr Ford relocated the business to its current location at 279-283 Byrnes Street.

The then Mareeba Shire Council mayor Cedric Davies officially opened the premises saying: “I know that Graeme’s investment will be followed by other major invest-

ments in the town.

“I compliment him and Sue for their contribution to Mareeba’s ever progressive situation in establishing these new premises for Ford and Toyota and applaud their faith in the future of this area.

“Mareeba as a whole is currently in a mode of expansion which is, no doubt, the envy of other areas of the country.

“I congratulate those people who made a contribution to the building of this structure and I know customers will have the services and facilities from Hansen Ford normally found in cities right here in their home town.”

The business went from strength to strength, taking on Toyota in 1981 and offering its customers the best deals in car ownership.

So what was popular back in the day?

In 1982 the Ford Falcon GL was the ‘next big thing’, in 1990 the dealership was promoting two of Ford’s most popular models at the time – the Corsair and the Capri and in 1998

Toyota launched a new six-model locally manufactured range of Camry and Vienta wagons – rear cup holders were a selling point.

At Hansen Ford Graeme has one of the best collections of Ford vehicle brochures and is also proud of his collection of the first 1961 Falcon XK Sedan and the last of the 2016 Falcon FGX SprintModels, an amazing 55 years of Falcon history.

The dealership has recently had a major facelift to create a comfortable environment for clients to purchase vehicles and a great place for their 24 staff to work in a happy and friendly environment.

Graeme’s son, Andrew, joined the business in 1999 and has helped build the Ford and Toyota dealership into a business that has many repeat clients coming back to buy their vehicles from him.

He will continue to provide this service way into the future when it comes time for Graeme to eventually retire.

Apparent Wild Rivers election plan Balkanu Cape York Development CEO Gerhardt Pearson says the Palaszczuk Government has a secret election plan to again buy green preferences by imposing a Wild Rivers regime over Cape York.

Kuranda reservoir works begin Mareeba Shire Council has begun demolishing the existing reservoir at Mason Road in Kuranda to make room for a new 500kL reservoir in its place.

The planned works are part of the Kuranda Suburban Water Security Project, which will see the construction of two additional drinking water reservoirs to improve water security.

Mayor Tom Gilmore said the critical project would ensure that appropriate water capacity is held in the Warril Drive and Mason Road reservoirs.

“This critical project will provide a secure water supply to businesses and

residents and fire-fighting capacity in emergency situations,” Cr Gilmore said.

“The current water reservoirs only hold a limited supply and these new tanks will provide a significantly better reserve supply.”

He said the new reservoir at Mason Road is almost complete and once the second reservoir is completed by November 2017, they would add an additional 650 kilolitres to residents’ drinking water supply. The project is funded through a $650,000 grant from the Queensland Government’s Building our Regions Program, with the remainder funded by Mareeba Shire Council.

Demolition work has begun at the Mason Road reservoir to make way for the new one.

Cooper’s vision continues to soar

Although Bill Cooper AO passed away at his home on the Atherton Tablelands in May 2015, in the opinion of Sir David Attenborough and many others, he continues to be ranked amongst the world’s greatest natural history artists.

From September to November 2017 the Tablelands Regional Gallery presents The Vision and Passion of William T. Cooper: A Retrospective.

This exhibition brings together for the first time over 40 rarely seen works from private collections and public institutions. The selection of drawings, field studies and major paintings trace his development from a budding landscape painter to becoming a major international figure in natural history painting.

“This is an incredible opportunity for our region to have an exhibition of a world class artist which would normally only be shown in a major metropolitan art

gallery,” said Tablelands Regional Council Mayor Joe Paronella.

Although best known for his popular illustrated bird publications, this exhibition seeks to explore his diversity of subject matter, his development as an artist and provides insight into his working process.

A long-time resident of the Atherton Tablelands, Cooper, as a teenager, was inspired to explore natural history through the work of nineteenth century naturalist and artist John Gould. Cooper later forged a significant career specialising in the birdlife of Australia and the world with books such as Parrots of the World and Birds of Paradise and Bowerbirds. Cooper’s unique working method bought him critical acclaim. His preference to study his subjects in the natural environment imbued his work with an honesty audiences immediately connected to as his work became highly sought after.

The works on display will come together from across Australia for this one time opportunity.

Along with the exhibition, the Gallery will be hosting a series of Masterclasses focusing on the natural world with renowned artists such

as Peter Marsack and Jonathan Kingdon.

Kids Month in October includes activities aimed at school age children who will be encouraged to view the exhibition from a different angle and explore some of Cooper’s tech-

niques.

The exhibition is on display at the Tablelands Regional Gallery from 1 September to 26 November 2017, and is a must see for all art and nature lovers. The exhibition launches on Friday 1 September

at 5.30pm with a very special opening night. A small number of Cooper’s works in the exhibition will also be on sale.

Trick rider brings horse stunts to Atherton Show After a whirlwind few years that took her to the other side of the world and back, Mikayla Jade is returning to Australia and is performing at the Atherton Show next Monday and Tuesday.

2016 saw Mikayla perform at the Fiesta the of Spanish Horse in Los Angeles and featuring in the night program of the 2016 Queensland Royal Show (The EKKA).

Previously the dare devil rider has performed at the Calgary Stampede,

Equitana and the Sydney Royal Show. She has also spent two years performing as part of the Australian Outback Spectacular and one year touring internationally with the Cirque du Soleil-esque production, Cavalia.

Mikayla is arguably one of the best equine artists in the country. With acts ranging from her trick riding act (a fast-paced adrenalin rush on horseback) to her liberty act (equine ballet) she is sure to be a crowdpleaser at this year’s show.

The LAND Next Gen of farming

Wanting to reduce chemical fertilizer use and improve productivity at their Lakeland banana farm led prominent local farmer Peter Inderbitzin to develop the ‘next generation’ in compost.

At the official opening of their new production plant – Shark Recyclers – west of Biboohra on Wednesday, June 29, Peter spoke about how he had travelled the world to research compost production before creating a product that had a delicate balance of carbon and nitrogen.

“We started making compost on a smaller scale originally, said Peter who was born in New Zealand but moved to the Tablelands in 1972 with his family.

“My brother Tom and I started about 10 years ago,” “It was a gut feeling of thinking 'hey, we need to put something back into the soil.

“So we started for our own use, but we realised we needed to go commercial because we needed all this equipment to do the job properly.”

The Inderbitzin's are a third generation farming family who began on the Tablelands as dairy farmers. Since then they have expanded to three farms, a variety of businesses and grown numerous crops from potatoes to bananas under the banner Swiss Farms based out of Lakeland.

They call their compost ‘Next-Gen’.

Using a Tanashark shredder the Inderbitzin's are able to transform all their banana waste, other green waste, chicken manure and minerals into organic compost that can revitalise farm soil, improve water retention and increase worm and microbial activity.

It's a 4-6 month process from waste to compost.

“The carbon to nitrogen ratio has got to be right so the carbon is the wood and

the nitrogen is the chicken manure,” explained Peter, who together with brother Tom began developing and using the compost on his own property 10 years ago.

“We've reduced our chemical fertilizer by 60 per cent and replaced it with compost and we use about six tonne, every time, four times a year per hectare.”

The Biboohra facility is now one of the largest of its kind in Queensland.

“We make three lines the main one is for farming, the next one is a finer one suitable for a special application and then we make another one that's suitable for football fields and sports grounds etc.”

Now Peter says the product could bring about big changes in the region's farming production, as well as the quality of the Great Barrier Reef.

“Production results are fantastic – we've got more production and better quality,” he said.

“We grow a lot of bananas and our average is a

lot higher than it used to be.

“And this will be a great step towards saving the reef if they want to talk about nutrient run off, because putting compost down creates a sponge. In other words it can take a lot more nutrients and water and therefore there's less run off.”

Leichardt MP Warren Entsch officially opened the facility on Wednesday, saying it is will be a boost to the local economy in many ways.

“This is of enormous benefit to the whole region and will provide employment opportunities for Mareeba,” he said.

“As the use of the this compost product increases we will see significant improvements in the quality of soil and production volumes.

“I applaud the ingenuity of the Inderbitzin family.

They are producing a high quality organic product using local materials that is suitable for all soils from large-scale farms to small home gardens.”

SUGAR REPORTS MOSSMAN MILL CRUSHING STATISTICS WEEK 3 Mossman Mill plant availability was above budget for week 3 along with budgeted weekly throughput.

The factory processed 45,086 tonnes of cane at an average crushing rate of 326 tonnes per hour.

The major down time during the week was due to a choke in the primary juice pipework, a fibre build-up in the prepared cane elevator, mud screw drive failure and factory shutdown for boiler tube repairs.

1. Grease and line a rectangular slice tray with baking paper (approximately 18X28cm).

2. Finely crush the biscuits in a food processor and set aside.

3. Roughly chop the apricots and set aside.

4. Melt the butter and brown sugar in the microwave for 1-2 minutes. Stir.

Lexi’s love for racing

Mareeba Speedway was host to the Autobarn Formula 500s on Sunday, July 2 which drew a crowd and a strong line up of competitors – one of which was Lexi Underwood.

As a woman, the 23-year-old from Cairns is an unusual sight behind the wheel on the race track but says she didn't have much choice about getting into it as her dad was a big part of the scene and says she “grew up at the track”.

Now one of the only female Formula 500 racers in Australia, Lexi is

breaking the mould for your typical speedway driver.

“I love it because it's a sport that it doesn't matter what gender you are, you participate against everybody,” she said.

"There's a few other girls in Australia but it's very rare to have 2 females at the same track at the same time."

Often competing all over the country, Lexi has just returned from Victoria taking part in the state and Australian titles in Formula 500s.

It is a sport that is huge in America where events will regularly attract over 100 cars and sponsorship deals are lucrative.

Lexi has a few American sponsors helping her with the cost of racing and says she would love to get into sprint cars one day, finances allowing.

The monthly Mareeba event also held Super Street Sedan races, Modified Production Sedans, 4 Cylinder Sedans and junior and senior go karts.

Athletes gear up for bush rogaine Adventurous athletes throughout Far North Queensland are eagerly awaiting Roganyan 4/8 – the third Bush Rogaine of the year on July 8.

Adding to the anticipation is the fact the event offers a full moon assisted eight hour ‘day / night’ option alongside the four hour event and is located in an area that event coordinators boast as the most scenic rogaine location they’ve been involved in.

Experienced Course Setter Rob Miller described the course area as “incredibly diverse with expansive views, comfortable off trail hiking, beautiful creek crossings and linked by an extensive network of tracks and trails that will greatly assist beginner rogainers”.

However, he also promised there was plenty of challenge for the more experienced competitors.

“The course has been set so that competitive eight hour teams who plan well, navigate without mistakes – particularly to the outlying higher value check

points – and transition to the notoriously difficult night navigation might just clear the course in less than eight hours”.

Bush rogaines are events in which teams of two to five choose their own route to visit as many – or as few – checkpoints as they choose within a set time, in this case either four or eight hours.

Each checkpoint has a value between 10 and 100 points and teams compete to accumulate the greatest number of points.

Prior to the event start teams are presented with topographic maps premarked with the checkpoint locations. They must then locate their choice of checkpoints assisted only by a compass and their navigation ability.

Both the four hour and eight hour events will commence at 1pm on Saturday, July 8th and finish at 5pm and 9pm respectively.

Chris Wieden from Cairns has competed for many years in a Suzuki Sierra but has now built a Hilux which he has raced once in Mackay and plans to compete in the Open class in July.

Gearing up for Off-Road comp

The Far North’s one and only 4x4 competition will be back in Mareeba on July 21-23.

Held over the Cairns Show long weekend, the ARB FNQ Off-road Challenge promises to provide plenty of off-road adrenaline pumping action, testing vehicle and driver capabilities.

Featuring three days of off-road competition at the Low4 Off-Road Park at

Tichum Creek on multiple stages, the weekend will be packed with some exciting racing with something for everyone.

“This is the only three day event to be held up here – the closest one is in Mackay,” said organiser Kylie Weilan.

“Off roading is really big down south so we’re hoping to get it started up here.”

The event was last held in 2012 at a venue on Chewko Road but Ky-

lie and husband Chris are hoping to make it an annual event now that Mareeba has its own dedicated off road track.

“We’ve still got to add another 10 stages to the track there for the more advanced drivers,” says Kylie.

There are two classes, Open and Weekend Warrior, catering from those highly modified vehicles and the slightly modified daily drivers. Nominations are open now and will stay

open until July 20. There is over $6,000 of ARB prizes up for grabs. It costs $245 to enter which gets entry and camping for three people and three free event shirts, plus of course the chance to win some awesome prizes.

As the only off-road event of it’s kind north of Townsville the first two comps were held in 2011 and 2012 and drew thousands of spectators and a high standard of competition. Competitors will be

travelling up from Rockhampton and South Australia for the Weekend Warrior Class.

Camping will be available from Friday to Sunday, with action kicking off from 1 pm Friday to 12 pm Sunday.

13 year old achieves Junior Black Belt at Rhee Tae Kwon Do Tablelands Action Day Rhee Tae Kwon Do Action Day for the Tablelands region was held in Mareeba on Saturday June 24, 2017.

42 students and eight Black Belt Instructors from Atherton, Mareeba and Dimbulah training centres attended under the watchful eye of 5th Dan Regional Master Instructor Gennaro Arena who was the grading examiner on the day.

13 year old first grade (brown belt/black tip) Dimbulah student Cara Dryden applied for her Junior Black Belt grading test.

Cara has been training at Dimbulah Centre for almost three years and was well prepared for her test.

Cara executed ChoongMoo pattern, comprising of a series of 30 movements, and several rounds of free sparring with other Junior Black Belts.

as part of her grading test, including downward knife hand strike, side kick, spinning back kick and flying side kick over three students.

Cara joins the Black Belt ranks alongside her 14 year old brother Sam Dryden who achieved his Junior Black Belt in December 2016.

“Cara and Sam are an inspiration to all who are training towards achieving a Black Belt in Martial Arts.

“Both students have displayed courtesy, self discipline and determination in their quest for Black Belt,” said 3rd Dan Regional Instructor and Dimbulah Branch Instructor Phil Quayle.

Cara is the 48th Dimbulah student to achieve the level of Black Belt under the instruction of 3rd Dan Instructor Phil Quayle.

“Black Belt is a momentous achievement for

anyone,” said Secretary for Tablelands Instructor Gaye Taylor.

“Not everyone makes it – but the goals at the end are well worth the sweat and the occasional tears.

“Rhee Tae Kwon Do Instructors encourage all students to set goals, to step up and take on the difficult challenges on the road to success.

“To see them arrive at their destination is extremely rewarding!”

EXPRESS sPORT Bulls draw 2-all away to Rangers

It was a case of dejavu for the Mareeba Bulls for the second game running – being up 2-1, only to drop points with the Marlin Coast Rangers who scored a 91st minute extra time equaliser.

The Bulls looked to have fought out a tough win, with Jason Haydon scoring in the 87th with a great volley from outside the penalty area to put the Bulls 2-1 up after the Rangers drew level at 1-1. Paul Ruiz put the Bulls 1-0 up on the 51st minute after both teams went into the sheds at 0-0 at halftime.

The Bulls went into the match with the first unchanged starting eleven for the first time this season and started the stronger team with Alex Plowman outstanding in defence and Steven Cater and Ruiz going well in the front third.

The Rangers did have some patches with the first half looking like even affair, but the Bulls were given the chance to take the lead in the 33rd minute with Haydon being brought down in the penalty area, but Ruiz could not convert from the

penalty spot.

In the second period the Bulls came out stronger with Ruiz finishing off well to send the Bulls 1-0 up.

The Rangers then threw everything at the Bulls and the pressure took its toll with the Mareeba defence unable to deal with a set piece in the 70th minute with the homeside drawing level.

The Bulls then lifted again dominating the last fifteen minutes, with the Rangers dangerous on the counter attack and Haydon putting the Bulls clear once again on the 87th minute.

But the Bulls then again could not deal with a set piece, with the homeside stealing a point in injury time.

The Bulls reserves continued their recent run of good form and are back in the premiership race with a 3-2 win over the Rangers, with Damien Wildman scoring two and Dennis Allen scoring the third.

The Bulls are at home this weekend against the Stratford Dolphins in two massive games for the premiers and reserves.

Gators win, but need to up their game Despite winning 32-24 to the Kangaroos on Saturday night, coach Tye Ingebrigtsen said the Gladiators' A Grade players needed to up their game if they had any chance of getting into this year's final.

“It was pretty sloppy,” said Ingebrigtsen after the game.

“Our attitudes probably weren't the best. We started off slow and they hit a lead 14-4.

“But we did good to come back and we were leading half

time 20-14 so it was good for the last 20 minutes of he first half we really went strong.”

Players like Joey Birchill who scored three tries throughout the game – and Ricky Sheen who got Man of the Match, helped the team to refocus for the second half.

Coach Ingebrigtsen said the boys got a bit complacent this week.

“The second half it just went tit for tat and we were lucky

enough to get the win but we've had a couple of real hard games the last couple of weeks and I think it's taken a lot out of the boys,” he said.

“It's good to get the win but we've just got to make sure we get better."

With six weeks of footy left to go before the end of the season, the Gladiators are keen to retain their winning streak and get a place in the semi finals for the first time in five years.

This weekend they play away to Mossman - a team that Ingebrigtsen says are very strong at home.

“That'll test us out," he said.

“They're a side that plays very well at home. So we've just got to show up with the right attitude.

Last night was a bit of a wake up call for us to know that you have to play good footy every week or every team in the competition will test you out. It will be good for us to bounce back.”
