SHOULD Mareeba’s annual show holiday fall in line with the town’s Rodeo? The Express has kicked off a discussion about changing the well-established show holiday to the Friday before the weekend Rodeo, with Mayor Tom Gilmore open to the possibility. “The question of whether Mareeba should have its own show and show holiday has been
considered for many years,” he said. “Clearly this may well be a suitable opportunity to discuss whether the community itself would like to be part of its own show.” Cr Gilmore said the Rodeo had “changed in the past 20 years and possesses many attributes associated with an agriculture show”. “The committee may well be encouraged to consider the transition in the near future,” he said. As it stands, the Rodeo has official “show sta-
tus” because of the weekend’s agricultural show and exhibition but retains its name because of the focus on horse and bull riding events at Kerribee Park. Mareeba District Rodeo Association secretary Angela Sturgess said she was indifferent to changing the show holiday. “We’ve never talked about it or discussed it,” she said. “I have no strong opinion either way, but I

Mareeba Lioness Club treasurer Pauline McKinley, president Lyn Dyer and members Janet Mills and Sandy Kelly are urging pensioners to join their monthly morning tea on August 9.
MANAGING EDITOR Carl Portella
Pensioners urged to get together By Michael Serenc MAREEBA’S pensioners are being urged to grab a cuppa or two at the Mareeba Lioness Club’s morning tea. The monthly event aims to encourage the town’s pensioners to come together for a game of bingo, raffles and a chance to catch up with old friends.

Club member Sandy Kelly said the event helped pensioners maintain a good social network, which they appreciated. “A lot of elderly people, as they get older, don’t get to see many people, so this is a really big thing for them,” she said. “They get to meet their friends

Backlash over developer dam By Michael Serenc THE developer behind a proposed $650 million eco-resort at Myola has landed himself in hot water with Mareeba Shire Council. Reever and Ocean Developments’ chairman Ken Lee, who is behind the 626ha “KUR-World” development, began construction of a dam last December without prior approval from council. Once made aware that same month, the developer was ordered to stop construction of the 1.3ha dam by council officers. The structure was intended to be used by cattle on the property. Reever and Ocean subsequently made a formal application to council to build the dam in February. Council voted unanimously at last Wednesday’s meeting to retrospectively approve Reever and Ocean’s application, subject to a strict set of conditions to bring the dam up to standard. That includes finishing its construction in accordance with a design plan prepared by a Registered Professional Engineer (RPEQ) and implementing an effective erosion and sediment
control plan. In response to a series of questions by The Express, KUR-World project manager Stuart Ricketts said Mr Lee believed the dam did not require council approval. “Mareeba Shire Council has complex requirements in the Myola area which override normal farm activities,” he said. “As a result, council issued a stop-work notice and the landowner complied immediately and began working with council to resolve the situation.” Mr Ricketts said Reever and Ocean would comply with all conditions set by council for the remaining construction of the dam and he did not expect the issue to affect KUR-World’s Environment Impact Statement process currently underway with the State Government. KUR-World was given coordinated project status by the Queensland Coordinator-General

could be “best practice” in terms of the conservation of biodiversity or treating the environment as an asset which is to be managed sustainably for future generations. “Mr Lee has yet to carry out an EIS for his major development proposal, yet already appears to be degrading the local environment.” The Coordinator-General is expected to release a Draft Terms of Reference (TOR) for KUR-World next month for comment by both the public and government agencies. The project still has to jump through several hoops, including the publication of an Environmental Impact Statement, before the Coordinator General can recommend approving or rejecting it.
earlier this month. A luxury 200-room hotel, three or four star resort, residential villa accommodation, education and business facilities and a health and wellbeing centre are all slated for the project. But Kuranda Regional Planning Group (KPRG) spokeswoman Cathy Retter called for the immediate repair of all “environmental damage” done by KUR-World to the site so far. “Mr Lee’s site works have already polluted two creeks that run into the Barron River. These are two of only a handful of creeks in the world known to be habitat for the endemic and critically endangered Kuranda Tree Frog,” she said. “It stretches credulity to consider that the intensive residential development he proposes

To do otherwise will cast them into the future oblivion of officials and so called leaders who collectively took their eye off the very necessary and orderly future development of our town and region, our CBD, and the people and future generations who are lucky enough to call “our place” home. Elderly needs important in shopping centre debate I have read with great interest the various articles published in local newspapers concerning the development of a new shopping centre in Mareeba and feel that I need to make the following observations. Firstly, I truly believe that all developments are positive and should be considered if a town is to continue to grow and diversify and I am therefore in absolute support of anyone who attempts to improve our town and enhance aspects of living within it. Secondly I am also supportive of local enterprise; it is important that locals support locals. However I believe that developers, local and otherwise, wishing locals to accept their vision for improvements to our town should always maintain a level of altruism. Which brings me to my third point; I am concerned by the lack of attention paid, both locally and politically, to our ageing population. One of the articles concerning the new Mareeba development stated that the local council needs to “… relinquish their trusteeship over a parcel of land, which is 1102m2, gazetted for aged-persons housing and to offer a letter of support to the Department of Natural Resources to dispose of that land”. I believe that this would be a precarious step for the council to take unless the developers offered an alternative piece of land suitable for aged care housing to replace it. It is truly hoped that this is already part of discussions between the developers and councillors. MELODY LUCAS, MAREEBA

Heavy vehicle bypass road – a must for Mareeba The Mareeba heavy vehicle bypass road was planned by the then Department of Main
Got something to say?
Roads, some 50 years ago, for very obvious reasons the community of Mareeba is witnessing today in Byrnes Street. B-Double cane hauling trucks, semitipper garbage trucks out of Cairns to the tip on the northern outskirts of Mareeba, B Double fridge mobiles moving fresh produce from Mareeba to southern markets, double decker cattle carrying semi-trailers, huge heavy equipment being floated to Cape York, dangerous goods and mixed loads travelling to Cape York, modular accommodation on semi-trailers and the list goes on. Every heavy vehicle with all types of missed loads travelling to Cape York has to pass along Byrnes Street to access the Mulligan Highway. I have travelled vastly across many states in Australia and have witnessed more communities, both on the coast and outback, with populations similar to Mareeba with heavy vehicle bypass roads. These heavy vehicle bypass roads are used extensively day and night by road transport operators as the bypass has very few obstacles and minimises the risk of some incident occurring in the heart of those communities. I would have to point out to local Government and the Chamber of Commerce that they construction of a heavy vehicle bypass road in Mareeba, as it was planned some 50 years ago, will have zero impact on the trading capacity of the retail outlets now positioned on Byrnes Street. Majority of the heavy vehicles are on a company schedule of moving their load from point A to B on time and with a route that minimises time and risk. The planned northern section of the heavy vehicle bypass road connecting Dimbulah Road with the industrial estate does nothing to reduce the impact or risk the volume of heavy vehicles passing through Byrnes Street. It would be very interesting to gather the data from truck drivers as to what percentage would rather a bypass route or face the obstacle course through Byrnes Street. It must be a game of Russian roulette for many with numerous near misses with pedestrians and smaller vehicles? It is time the community of Mareeba and surrounding area received some substantial road infrastructure funding from both the Federal and State governments and changed the national highway route from Byrnes Street to the route west of the town, as was planned by very visionary and forward thinking leaders some 50 years ago. Tablelands Regional Council has passed its budget for this financial year.
What it means for you
For every $100 of general (land) rates, TRC will invest about: • $31 towards roads and bridges • $18 towards community facilities and property management • $15 towards parks and gardens $11 providing customer and organisational services
PHONE: 4092 4774
$6 towards councillors and executive services $5 towards regulatory services including local laws and animal management $4 towards economic development, tourism and culture $4 towards libraries $3 towards planning and building services $2 towards community development services $1 towards disaster management
Reduced rate rise forecast A DRAMATICALLY reduced rate rise forecast in this year’s council budget is set to have Tablelands ratepayers jumping for joy. The average total rate rise will be just 10.52 per cent over the next three financial years, almost a third of what was originally forecast in the 2015/16 budget over the same period of time. The average total rate rise for 2016/17 will be just 4.3 per cent, but the $55.6 million budget will remain in the red with a projected operating deficit of $453,942. $29.7 million will be spent on capital works in the shire. Ratepayers will cop increases to sewerage and waste charges, which will go up by an average of two per cent and 7.7 per cent respectively.Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) mayor Joe Paronella said council had “cut to the bone” to ensure the rate rise was as low as possible. “We’ve looked for every possible saving

within the organisation that we can,” he said. “The staff has been absolutely fantastic with trying to find those savings. We’ve asked and we believe they will deliver.” Cr Paronella said he was hopeful the budget would get back into surplus from next financial year if similar cost efficiencies and savings could be reproduced. “We’re committed to running the organisation as tight as we can,” he said. Based on council’s newly revised forecast, the average total rate rise for 2017/18 will be 3.8 per cent, followed by just 2.4 per cent in 2018/19. Regional planning fees and charges have been streamlined across the former Atherton, Eacham and Herberton shires, effective from September 1. “Some parts of the shire had had to have increases in some fees, others have had drops and others have stayed the same,” Cr Paronella
said. “Basically, its cost recovery on all of our services…We’ve had to get a happy medium right across the board.” Water consumption in the shire will be charged at 56 cents per kilolitre and the water access charge is now standardised across the shire to be $466 per year effective from January 1. But pensioners will still be eligible for a discount of 30 per cent on general (land) rates to a maximum of $240 per year, while a five per cent discount (down from 10 per cent in 2015/16) will be offered to anyone who pays within 30 days of invoice. Key highlights of the budget include $5 million for Ravenshoe’s Sewerage Treatment Plant upgrade and $1.75 million each for the Cassowary and Millstream water supply schemes. All three projects have been co-funded with either the State or Federal Government.

“It would make more sense. It would bring greater significance to the day.”
“Leave it as it is.”
“I think we should. It’s a community event and we have the procession on that Friday night so it’s a great way to build the atmosphere before that.”
“Yes. It would promote the community supporting the Rodeo if they did have the holiday on the Friday before.”
“I don’t think that’s a good idea because a lot of people will be torn between which show they want to go to.”
“I think we should… Some people wouldn’t have to work so it would make it easier to attend and appreciate the whole idea of the rodeo. You’d never miss out.”
Do we need to change the show holiday?

From P1 Council sets the following year’s show holiday dates at the end of each July, which is then approved by the Queensland Attorney-General. Mareeba Chamber of Commerce president Joe Moro said he preferred leaving the existing holiday in place, given the Rodeo’s weekend focus. “The Chamber believes the status quo is fine, considering we don’t have a day event occurring on the Friday,” he said. “It would be a matter for the Rodeo
Association if they wanted to change their dates.” Mr Moro said the Chamber would back the Rodeo Association committee on whatever decision they made regarding the weekend date of the Rodeo. “There needs to be something to keep people in Mareeba if it’s going to be a public holiday,” he said. “Friday before the Rodeo is a very strong day, there’s a lot of shopping activity around Mareeba, and it builds up to the procession that night.”

Shopping centre plan delayed By Michael Serenc A DECISION on a land purchase vital to a proposed shopping centre for Mareeba has been kicked down the road by council. The $21 million project failed to rate a mention at last Wednesday’s council meeting, with Mayor Tom Gilmore telling The Express a decision on the 1100m2 parcel of state-owned land developer Reedlodge Pty Ltd wanted to buy would be “several months” away. While the Department of Natural Resources and Mines has the final say on selling the land, it
will be influenced by council’s view on the proposed purchase as they are trustee. “A decision is not going to happen immediately. I am simply not going to throw my arms up in the air and say “Hallelujah, this is what we’re going to do” because that would be wrong,” Cr Gilmore said. “I want to make sure that any decision we make, whether it’s yes or no, is justifiable, soundly based and will give the right answer to the community.” If successful in gaining council and State government approval, the block would add to Reedlodge’s existing 12,403m2 of land situated across
from Mareeba Plaza along Byrnes St, allowing the company to proceed with a development application. Cr Gilmore said council would work “diligently through the process” before arriving at its final decision over the land. Council’s meeting was prefaced by a small, pro-shopping centre protest outside the council’s main building on Rankin St. Armed with more than a dozen placards, a group of three passionate pensioners spoke out in support of the development. “We see shops closing and people going to Cairns and Atherton,” said protestor Chris John-
son. “If people don’t support Mareeba, it will close, so we need something to encourage them to buy here.” Ms Johnson said the recent loss of Hastie Centre Furnishings and Overflow meant speciality stores in the town were desperately needed, as well as more competition for existing stores. If approved, construction of the centre would take between 12 and 18 months, generating between 200 and 220 direct and indirect jobs. Once built, the 7000m2 centre, which will include a major supermarket, is expected to sustain between 200 and 250 direct and indirect jobs.
Locals stage a pro-shopping centre protest outside the Mareeba Shire Council building last week.

Facelift planned for Atherton town centre A PARK and recreational space planned for Atherton’s town centre could be the next Cairns Esplanade. Tableland Regional Council voted unanimously to endorse a draft master plan for the Priors Creek Precinct, which is expected to feature a mix of trails, gardens and residential, recreational and commercial space. The precinct would also pay homage to the area’s history with a number of old railway lines running through it. The draft plan will now be put to the community for public consultation. TRC Division 5 councillor Katrina Spies said she was excited about the potential of the project, which will be a staged development likely over at least 10 years. “The way I look at it is something like the Esplanade in Cairns or the Strand in Townsville, but on a scale reasonable for us,” she said. “It would be a shared community space, we want it to be a vibrant area and a place where the community meets.
“We’ve got lots of different community groups with lots of different interests. Some of them have been a part of this draft, now it’s about getting it out there to the whole of the community.” The possibility of moving Atherton’s existing visitor centre from Silo Rd to the proposed precinct was flagged in the plan. Cr Spies said it was too early to put a dollar figure on the project, with the plan featuring several freehold land sites that could be developed into retail space. Atherton Tablelands Chamber of Commerce president Albi Homann said he was supportive of the recreational side of the project. “If you look at the last few years, we haven’t really had anything like it,” he said. “Probably in the past few months, there’s some more positive energy going through this town.” But Mr Homann said he didn’t see the need for Priors Creek to have a retail component. “Personally, I think it would make it hard…There’s plenty of retail stores here along the main street that then won’t get that walk-in foot traffic through.”
Show of force against veg laws ALMOST 100 protestors have made their voice heard about the State Government’s controversial vegetation management laws. A rowdy crowd of 80 farmers, politicians, indigenous representatives and political aspirants staged a demonstration outside of State Treasurer Curtis Pitt’s Gordonvale electorate office earlier this month. Several high profile political figures attended, including Senator-elect Pauline Hanson, State LNP Member for Hinchinbrook Andrew Cripps and Cairns Regional Council Division 1 councillor Brett Moller. Of key concern for farmers is the Bill’s intention to
www.theexpressnewspaper.com.au
prohibit further development of high-value agricultural land and irrigated high-value agricultural land and stoping the clearing of “high-value regrowth” on freehold land, something which farmers have regularly managed on their properties for several years. Speakers at the rally warned the proposed laws would “shut down” agriculture and make criminals out of farmers if they clear regrowth or vegetation on their farms. If passed, the laws would also be retrospective, taking effect from the date the Bill was introduced into parliament on March 17. Parliament is expected to vote on the laws in August.

mauled and decapitated by aggressive dogs on the course over the past two weeks. Golf club manager Cynthia Houchin said there had been a huge drop in the number of kangaroos residing on the course from about 500 to 150 since the attacks began. “We’re all mortified with what’s happening,” she said. “The dogs are ripping the kangaroos’ heads and tails off, opening up their stomachs. “They’re doing it for fun, they’re not eating them.” Mrs Houchin said the kangaroos faced the dual threat of being hunted by a trio of bloodthirsty dogs, who lived near Mareeba’s dump, and local neighbourhood dogs who were more interested in chasing the native animals. Golf club members have been conducting nightly patrols of the course since the attacks began in an effort to catch the offending dogs. Mareeba Shire Council officers have also been helping the club by setting up a dog trap. Mrs Houchin said the club had not experienced anything like the recent spate of attacks on the course. She urged owners of the offending dogs to own up and take some responsibility. “It’s a pet, not some wild animal,” she said. “The owners that are responsible shouldn’t have dogs.” Mrs Houchin rescued an abandoned joey on the course last week, which is now with a local wildlife carer. The kangaroos are a regular tourist attraction on the course, with non-golf playing visitors paying a small fee to view them and other native wildlife.

What would a birthday party be without a birthday cake? What would any party be without a cake! Giddy’s Place in Atherton is celebrating its 10th birthday and they have all the cakes you need. The business started as a dream of making and decorating cakes as a pastime, but soon enough the current shop grew to twice its size due to the demand and necessity to display decorations, cake tins and all the other things you need to make cakes. Owner Stacey was taught by her grandmother Giddy (Beryl Johnson), who then went on to become a qualified pastry chef. She has a strong belief that homely cooking is what sets her business apart from the others – there are no packet mixes, everything is made from scratch. You can dine in or take away at your convenience with gluten free products, homemade meals, sandwiches salads and quiches on the menu. Pies and sausage rolls are made fresh daily together with cakes, slices and biscuits just like grandma used to make. If you have a function coming up, Stacey can help you with catering for weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, novelty, engagement and all special occasions, plus they can make a cake to suit. Pop in for a cuppa next time you’re in town. Look up Giddy’s Place at 46 Main Street, Atherton – open early for breakfast and until 3.30pm for lunch, snacks and coffee. For all cake orders, phone 4091 2080.

A local family has combined to help those in need. ‘Cugini working for a cure’ a 2016 Relay for Life team is made up of sisters, cousins, mothers and daughters from Mareeba and Atherton, who have all been touched by cancer in one way or another. “We have all been touched by cancer in some way,” said team captain Linda Ruggeri. “We have all had a family member or a friend diagnosed with cancer and we decided that we wanted to make a difference and help those when they need it most.
The team has been busy all year with raffles, pie and lamington drives, an “instant party” wheelbarrow full of goodies and heaps more. They are also selling tickets for the Relay for Life monster raffle. As well as their own team fundraising they have been attending and supporting other charitable events in the region. “People have been so supportive and we like to show our support for other fundraising efforts as well,” said Linda. Working for a Cure
‘It Runs in the Family’ – a British comedy Following the highly successful season of ‘Grease’ at the end of last year, the Mareeba Theatre Group invites all lovers of theatre back to their first show of 2016. ‘It Runs in the Family’ by British playwright Ray Cooney, highlights an event in the life of Dr David Mortimore. Dr Mortimore is about to address a neurologists convention that could earn him a knighthood and a promotion in his career. While putting the final touches to his speech, however, a one-time lover Jane Tate arrives and announces that their liaison some seventeen years before has
resulted in a the birth of a daughter Lesley – who is now downstairs and desperately trying to find her father. David is forced to invent not one, but two non-existent husbands for Jane, before enlisting the help of his colleague, Dr Hubert Bonney. Events are further complicated by the presence of a police sergeant, a vicar who wears a dog collar, a wondering, senile patient, an assortment of matrons – some real and others not, a syringe full of tranquillizer and the costumes for the annual hospital Christmas pantomime.
But the fun doesn’t end there. An errant soda syphon and the quick-fire comedy lines riddles with clever repartee and ribald bantering ensure that the hilarious force never wears into serious territory. Performances will be held at the Mareeba Theatre Group at 71 Constance St on July 29 and 30 and August 4 and 5. The show starts at 7.30pm with bookings available through Nina or Tania at Travelexperience.com, at 131 Byrnes St, Mareeba, or on the night. Tickets are $20 per adult.

Dangers of leaving children in cars The State’s peak motoring body has issued a serious warning about the dangers of leaving a child in a car, following an alarming number of rescues of trapped children during the first half of this year. In the first six months of this year RACQ rescued more than 590 children locked inside of a car, with as many as 33 rescues in one week. RACQ spokesperson Lauren Ritchie said even in cooler weather it was critical parents took great care with their child’s safety. “We average three children rescued from cars every day of the year, and it’s a trend that’s unfortunately not improving,” Ms Richie said. “Too often these accidental lockins are due to parents giving the car

keys to the children to play with and it only takes a touch of a button for them to be trapped inside.” Ms Ritchie said RACQ tests revealed in as little as seven minutes the car’s internal temperature reached 40 degrees. “Whether you’re parking in the shade or if the weather is a little cooler the risks remain the same,” she said. “Being exposed to such high temperatures in a car can kill or lead to severe injury for young children in a relatively short time.” Any parent whose child was locked in a car should call RACQ (13 1111) or emergency services (000) immediately.
Most common causes of vehicle breakdown RACQ has revealed the 10 most common causes of vehicle breakdown in Queensland, with one in every two callouts due to flat batteries. In the last year, RACQ attended more than 880,000 calls for roadside assistance, most commonly due to flat or faulty batteries. RACQ Executive Manager Technical and Safety Policy Steve Spalding said it was not surprising batteries topped the list. “Modern cars have a lot of electrical accessories which can easily drain the battery,” Mr Spalding said. “Leaving your vehicle’s lights on overnight, going away on holidays and leaving your car sitting idle in the garage are common mistakes that can also cause your battery to flatten.”
Mr Spalding said flat tyres was another common reason Queenslanders called on RACQ. “In the past year we’ve changed tyres for more than 70,000 people who’ve been stuck with a flat,” he said. "Some motorists aren’t confident in changing a wheel so that is when we can step in and assist. “Even though modern cars are technically very complex, we’re proud to say we get nine out of 10 motorists straight back on the road after a breakdown.” RACQ has more than 700 rescue vehicles on call 24/7 and 365 days a year.
The top 10 breakdown causes: 1. Flat or faulty batteries 2. Flat tyres 3. Locked out 4. Engine issues 5. Fuel and related engine issues 6. Radiator issues 7. Alternator and related electrical issues 8. Starter motor and related electrical issues 9. Ignition issues 10. Wiring or connector issues PAGE 14 The Express, Wednesday, July 27, 2016

Using the Sixth Sense to combat motorcycle trauma Five-time world MotoGP champion Mick Doohan urges riders to use their sixth sense to reduce the chances of a crash in a new motorcycle safety campaign launched last week by the Palaszczuk Government. Road Safety Minister Mark Bailey said the online campaign has already reached over 1 million users on Facebook and encouraged motorcycle riders to heed Mick’s advice and use their sixth sense on the road. “Motorcycle riders are one of the most vulnerable road user groups and tragically they usually come off second-best in a crash,” Mr Bailey said. “This group continues to be over-represented in the road toll - twenty-eight motorcycle riders have died on Queensland roads so far this year. “I’m excited to have respected world champion Mick Doohan leading this safety campaign and helping us reach even more motorcycle riders - I thank him for his involvement.” Mr Doohan stars in a range of new online videos that encourage safe motorcy-
cle riding and provide advice on several topics including road craft, cornering and braking, group riding, and returning to ride after some time off the bike. He said it didn’t matter if riders were new to the activity or had been riding motorcycles for decades, it was vital they kept working on their sixth sense. “Sixth sense is the high level of awareness required to ride a motorcycle safely,” Mr Doohan said. “It’s that unique instinct all riders share that help us read the road, the conditions, the potential hazards and stay focussed and in control.” The Sixth Sense motorcycle campaign is only one of several initiatives announced by the Palaszczuk Government to help combat motorcycle trauma on Queensland roads. Other initiatives include: • Four new unmarked Police motorcycles for education and enforcement activities on known high-risk motorcycle routes throughout Queensland • Reforming Queensland’s motorcycle
licensing from October 2016 to ensure that testing and licensing requirements adequately prepare novice riders and encourage skill development • More than $11 million to boost safety projects across the state to reduce the severity of crashes at motorcycle black spots. The Sixth Sense campaign includes a range of online resources to encourage safe motorcycle riding including videos, regional maps highlighting some of Queensland’s favourite rides, and other important safety information broken down into relevant skill-level. The campaign will be promoted through online and outdoor billboard advertising, as well a strong social media presence to enforce the motorcycle safety message.

Farmers urged to dig in TABLELANDS farmers are being urged to attend a unique agricultural conference later this year in Cairns. The city will host the National Biological Farming Conference this October, featuring some of the world’s best farmers and agricultural researchers. Bowen tomato grower Jamie Jurgens will open the conference with his story of generational change and resilience in embracing biological farming. That will be followed by a speech from internationally-renowned North Dakota regenerative farmer, Gabe Brown, explaining how his integrated crop management system has eliminated pesticides and artificial fertilisers. University of Western Sydney microbiology professor Dr Brajesh Singh will put Australia’s biological farming into an international context with his insights from work advising key agricultural policy makers in the USA and European Union. About 50 farmers, agronomists and researchers from Australia, the US and New Zealand will speak at the event, which will feature about 40 exhibitors with the latest biological farming techniques, products and practices. Topics will include everything from composting to climate resilience, drones to dung beetles and biochar to bioherbicides. Industry changes to wheat and sheep, beef cattle, dairying, cotton and grains, sugar cane and bananas, viticulture and tree crops will also be discussed. The conference will close with a vision for agriculture in 2060. Tickets are $225 plus GST until August 7 or $350 plus GST from August 8. To book, head to www.nationalbiologicalfarmingconference.org.au

Biosecurity crack down on soil theft BIOSECURITY Queensland officials will attempt to find a quantity of stolen fill dirt potentially contaminated with electric ants. The dirt was taken from Myola’s Owen Creek Stockpile Site along Myola Oak Forest Rd earlier this month, with the site currently under quarantine for electric ants. Biosecurity Queensland’s National Electric Ant Eradication Program Coordinator Gary Morton said department officers would work with all stakeholders, including the stockpile site owner and local police, to try and track down the stolen dirt so it could be
analysed for an electric ant infestation. “The first target for us is to find out where it’s gone to so we can check it,” he said. “It shows how easy it can be to potentially spread electric ants. “People do need to be aware of where our quarantine areas are and make sure they are sticking to the movement controls we do have in place.” Movement controls for electric ants are in place across the Cairns region, including at Kuranda and surrounding towns. The 1.5mm long ant is native to Central

According to the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries, the electric ant can “inflict painful stings on wild and domestic animals and on humans”. Mr Morton said the ant was in the world’s top 100 worst invasive species. “They’re an economic, environmental and social pest, they’re a nasty little thing,” he said. “Where we’ve found them in big numbers, we’ve found they will displace up to 95 per cent of the native ant species.”

Value buying in Wylandra Estate
Wylandra Estate launched 20 years ago and back then land prices for large homesites was around $45,000. This year Wylandra has launched its next stage ‘Hoevet Field’. This stage appears to be Wylandra’s best so far. The new stage features asphalt roads rather than bitumen, underground power and tree-scaped streets. The proprietors say this stage is good value because on top of the improvements Wylandra has always been known for there is good access to underground water which means you can supplement town water by installing a bore. The soils on Wylandra are very rich which means you can create productive gardens and beautiful landscapes and they are rated “M Class” which makes them perfect for house construction. Cougar Homes has developed a home design for Hoevet Field. An artist’s impression of Hoevet Quarters shows a very modern four bedroom design perfect for the north Queensland climate. Drive out this weekend as a sales agents will be onsite – Saturday from 11.30-1pm and Sunday from 10-11am. Phone 0413 250 271 for more information or visit www.wylandraestate.com.au

Place the cauliflower in a bowl and microwave for 2 minutes, then stir and microwave again for another 2 minutes. Roosters come from behind to win The Atherton Roosters have continued their push towards a top three semi-final spot with a come from behind 14-10 win over second placed Ivanhoes at Roosters Stadium, on Saturday Night. Ivanhoes led 10-0 at the break, but it was the Roosters who took all the second half glory with three unanswered tries. Winger Jacob Rivett again starred with two tries to give the young flyer five four-pointers from the Roosters last two games. Roosters coach Dean Howard said his side would take a lot of confidence out of the win as they build for the semi-finals. “It was a very tight and physical 80 minutes, a good exercise for us to prepare for the games ahead,” Howard said. “We blew a few scoring chances in the first half, but once we controlled the ball better the points started to come our way.” Results of other round 17 first grade games played at the weekend – Innisfail 82 v Mareeba 6, Brothers 70 v Yarrabah 10, Tully 36 v Edmonton 20, Mossman 50 v Kangaroos 16. Rugby league action continues this Saturday at Roosters Stadium with the Roosters hosting the Yarrabah Seahawks in three grades from 4pm. The Mareeba Gladiators will travel to Petersen Park to take on Edmonton Storm this Sunday, with games from 12noon.
Winger Jacob Rivett has scored five tries in the Roosters last two games.
Cairns District Rugby League premiership ladder: Innisfail 34, Ivanhoes 26, Atherton 23, Brothers 23, Mossman 20, Tully 18, Edmonton 14, Kangaroos 12, Suburbs 11, Mareeba 10, Yarrabah 9.
Bulls shoot down Rangers The Mareeba Bulls have continued to mount pressure on the ladder leaders with a 3 nil win over Marlin Coast Rangers, at Lindsay Australia Stadium on Saturday night. The result now means this weekend’s showdown with the Stratford Dolphins could well put one hand on the premiership trophy for either club. Despite coming off a bye and out of season rain that forced the Bulls off the training paddock last week, the home side continued their recent run of good form, and though at time looking a bit underdone, they still got the job done. The Bulls dominated possession, but lacked their usual attacking spark that has seen the side score 21 goals in the past four games. Only a Steven Cater goal in the 27th minute was the difference at half time. Both teams went into the break with the home side leading 1-0. Coach Srhoj asked for more urgency in the second period and the Bulls answered off the whistle with Paul Ruiz and Cater both having close chances to increase the lead. The home side continued to dominate proceedings and were rewarded with Robert Pendenza scoring a diving header at the back post to bring the margin to 2-0. Dennis Allen then converted from the penalty spot to give the Bulls a commanding 3-0 lead with a just under half-an-hour to go. The Bulls had numerous chances to increase the lead with Cater, Ruiz, Allen and Wayne Srhoj, all one touch away from putting away good opportunities. With the match winding down, Srhoj had the luxury of resting Allen and Cater and therefore giving youngsters Bryson

Wells and James Elmes some time with the premier side, along with Brandon Pozzebon. Coach Srhoj, though happy with the three points, highlighted the Bulls were probably short of a gallop after two weeks of disruptions. “I wanted to give the boys a break after the Southside game, but did not count on the weather last week,” Srhoj said. “We had more of a break then what I would have liked, which probably meant we were not at our best tonight, but it will mean something towards the end of the season. Srhoj praised the efforts of youngsters Jaydon Wells and John Ghensi who came in and played out of position with regulars Ben Stabile and Nicholas Tallarico away. “Jaydo and Johny were fantastic tonight, they came into the
side playing out of position, but held their own and were outstanding.” The Bulls are now preparing for this weekend’s clash against the Stratford Dolphins, with the outcome of the match having a large say in the premiership race; and according to Srhoj the competition leaders will feel the pinch. “It’s a big game, but nothing we are not used to,” said Srhoj. “Everyone wrote us off at the start of the year, Stratty brought in a heap of stars to knock us off – so we will work hard, prepare like we always do and give them a good run.” In other matches from the weekend the Reserves came from behind in the last minutes to draw 3-3, the Ladies came close to a win only going down by 1 goal, with the final score 4-3; and the Youth side defeated the Rangers 2-1.

Metrogaine ready to rock By Michael Serenc A CLASH of orienteering, extreme sport and street art will come alive in Mareeba next month at the 2016 Metrogaine. Run annually by the Mareeba Lions Club, this year’s Metrogaine (orienteering) competition will also feature skateboard clinics, a graffiti art workshop and much, much more. FNQ Freestyle Roller Sports Association Inc president Adam Walker said he was stoked to be
able to be part of the event. “We really jumped on board because it’s an opportunity for us to help develop the community,” he said. “Essentially, we hope to be able to put on a fun jam session, so there will be music and we’ll be rolling out there and having fun.” Mr Walker said in addition to skate clinics and the jam session, a stack of prizes would also be up for grabs in the skate competition. “Overall, I think the kids get acknowledgment that they’re part of a really big community,” he
Mareeba star set to come home FORMER Mareeba Gladiators junior Ben Hampton could be set for a return home to North Queensland. Speculation is rife the Melbourne Storm utility is on the verge of signing a multi-year deal with the Cowboys. The 24-year-old, who was recruited by the Storm as a development player when he was 14, had a breakout season with the Storm this year after three years of being on the fringes with the club’s first grade side. Having represented Queensland at U15, U16 and U18 levels, Hampton has been touted as a future replacement for Cowboys superstar halfback Jonathan Thurston – should he sign with them. Metrogaine organiser and Lions member Craig Beikoff said he wanted to bring together different community groups and organisations to turbocharge this year’s event. “It’s just about trying to see what we can val-

Registration is at 8am, with the Metrogaine comp kicking off at 8:30am. Entry is $10 per person or $20 for a group of four.
